A LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ‘Tis the season for visions of Sugar Plums dancing in my head. For weeks now, mice have indeed been stirring within the studio walls, along with Snowflakes, Flowers and Marzipan. World trade is at an all time high with Chocolate from Spain, Candy Canes from Russia, Tea from China and Coffee from Arabia, all available and in great supply. The soldiers diligently on patrol, ever weary of the troublesome Rat King, are again lead by a valiant Nutcracker Prince who himself is saved by our heroine, Clara, through whom’s eyes we take this magical journey.

Nutcracker is our annual celebration of family and community, of childhood and fantasy, hope and joy. It brings us together, slows down the hectic pace of our daily routines and helps us focus on what really matters, family and community. The Arts bring us together to witness the best in athletic achievement combine with artistic expression and narrative.

There are no losers only winners as art defines our culture while reminding us of our values and reflecting on our experiences.

Nutcracker, while being the best of introductions to dance and theater is also our annual revisiting of that introduction, the reliving of that childhood experience. Your support of the arts keep the tradition alive!

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Welcome to American Repertory Ballet’s production of Nutcracker! For me, the holiday season and Nutcracker go hand in hand. As a young student, I looked forward to dancing the ballet each year and being swept away by the magic of the music, costumes, lights, and characters! As a professional dancer, seeing the joy on children’s faces night after night inspired me to find something new in each performance. And now, leading the dedicated team at American Repertory Ballet (ARB) and Princeton Ballet School, I get chills just hearing the first few notes of the overture! I am thrilled to bring my own children to the theater, and I hope you will make ARB’s Nutcracker an annual tradition for your family as well.

With performances throughout New Jersey, we hope to spread the magic of Nutcracker to as many communities as possible. Your support, and presence, enables us to broaden our reach each year and inspire audiences near and far. Thank you for being a part of the magic!

A LETTER FROM THE SCHOOL DIRECTOR Welcome to the 2017 season of American Repertory Ballet’s Nutcracker! A true holiday tradition, every year this ballet brings together communities, families, and audiences young and old, to enjoy the magical and exciting journey of a brave girl named Clara.

At American Repertory Ballet/Princeton Ballet School, the joining of forces to bring this magnificent ballet to life is a process to behold in itself. For many of our young students, it is their first time performing ballet on stage as tiny mice. Imagine their sense of awe when we have our first “put-together” rehearsals, sharing the room with our fabulous professional company dancers! The joy and wonder felt at that moment is palpable.

This joy and wonder is carried through to the stage as each member of the cast, children and professionals alike, understands the importance and value of the roles they play in sharing the story of Nutcracker with you. As audience members, we hope our performance moves you, and you enjoy watching the ballet as much as we enjoy performing for you. The beauty of ballet can be an ongoing part of your life, either through attending other performances of American Repertory Ballet, or through attending dance classes at the Princeton Ballet School. We welcome you to all, and look forward to seeing you again!

ABOUT AMERICAN REPERTORY BALLET American Repertory Ballet’s (ARB) mission is to bring the joy, beauty, artistry and discipline of classical and contemporary dance to New Jersey and nationwide audiences, and to dance students through artistic and educational programs. Led by Executive Director Julie Diana Hench, the organization comprises: the preeminent professional classical and contemporary ballet company in the state; Princeton Ballet School, one of the largest and most respected non-profit dance schools in the nation; and ARB’s Access & Enrichment initiatives, including the acclaimed DANCE POWER program, the longest continuously running community and arts partnership in New Jersey.

American Repertory Ballet is committed to presenting classical and contemporary ballets from the 19th and 20th century alongside new and existing works by choreographers from today. Founded in 1963, the company is under the leadership of Artistic Director Douglas Martin, former principal dancer at the Joffrey Ballet, Cleveland Ballet and American Repertory Ballet. ARB’s rich history of repertory includes works by leading choreographers including Balanchine, Forsythe, Limón, Parsons, Peterson and many others. ARB has been consistently designated a “Major Arts Institution” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for the past two decades, and has repeatedly been awarded a Citation of Excellence by the Council. ARB was voted the Jersey Arts People’s Choice for “Favorite Dance Company” in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Princeton Ballet School has gained a national reputation for its excellent dance training since its founding in 1954 by Audrée Estey. Under the direction of Pamela Levy, the school serves approximately 1,200 students, starting at age three, and includes a large open enrollment division for adults. The school has studios in Cranbury, New Brunswick and Princeton and offers classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz, hip-hop, CardioBallet and CoMBo (Conditioning for the Mind and Body). Students have gone on to dance in professional ballet and contemporary dance companies around the globe, including New York City Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Miami City Ballet, Complexions, Mark Morris Dance Company, Twyla Tharp, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Ballet West and on Broadway.

The Access & Enrichment wing of American Repertory Ballet reaches out to the community not only through its DANCE POWER program and signature On Pointe series, but also with free programming, master classes, residencies, lecture demonstrations and School-Time Matinees. In 1985, American Repertory Ballet partnered with the New Brunswick Board of Education to create DANCE POWER. Today, it’s the longest-running uninterrupted arts/community partnership in New Jersey. The legendary Gregory Hines was DANCE POWER’s Honorary Chair for 18 years before his untimely passing in 2003. In 2001, Mr. Hines endowed a scholarship at Rutgers University that earmarks annual funds for a DANCE POWER student to attend the university. arballet.org | 8

THE STORY OF THE NUTCRACKER ACT I | The Party The scene opens with the annual Christmas Eve Tree Lighting party at the home of the Silverhaus’. Clara and Fritz anxiously wait outside the parlor for the tree lighting, when to Clara’s horror and Fritz’s delight, the maid enters the hall, chasing a mouse from the pantry.

Father calls the children in, and the tree is lighted. As guests arrive, we are introduced to the Elegant Family, the Widow, her daughter, the Dapper Gent and the Big Family with their nine children. After a festive dance performed by the children, the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer and his Nephew arrive. Drosselmeyer reveals wonderful mechanical dolls, and then presents his favorite niece, Clara, with a beautifully carved Nutcracker. As all of the children watch Drosselmeyer’s demonstration of the Nutcracker, Fritz becomes jealous and grabs the gift from Clara. In his flight, he drops and breaks it.

Drosselmeyer bandages the Nutcracker and gives it to Clara. The party winds down, the guests depart and the Silverhaus family goes to bed.

The Battle Unable to sleep, Clara sneaks downstairs to visit her Nutcracker. As she dances in the parlor with the Nutcracker, the shadows and the movement of little mice disturb her delight. Drosselmeyer appears and casts her into a dream world, transforming the parlor into a battleground between an army of soldiers and rats.

Clara is amazed by the transformation of the parlor as the now lifesize Nutcracker and his army of soldiers defend the Christmas tree from the minions of the Rat King and mice. As the fortune of the battle turns, Clara defends her beloved Nutcracker by throwing her shoe at the Rat King – vanquishing him and his awful troop.

Land of Snow Drosselmeyer reappears and transforms the wounded Nutcracker into the Nutcracker Prince who will accompany Clara on an enchanted journey.

The parlor is magically transformed into the Land of Snow, and Angels float onto the scene. Clara and the Prince meet the beautiful Snow Queen and King and are dazzled by whirlwinds of Snowflakes.

ACT II | Land of Sweets Clara and the Nutcracker Prince make their way to the Land of Sweets and are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Prince tells the story of the great battle for the Christmas tree and how Clara saved the day by thwarting the Rat King and securing victory. As a reward for her heroism, the Sugar Plum Fairy presents dances from different lands including Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, Tea from China, Candy Canes from Russia, Marzipan from Germany and a wonderfully playful meeting of Mother Ginger and her many children. This is followed by a fragrant bouquet of Flowers and the tour de force pas de deux by the Sugar Plum and her Cavalier. After the grand finale, a very happy but tired Clara is returned home to the comfort of the family parlor and wakes from her wonderful journey. arballet.org | 10

AMERICAN REPERTORY BALLET LEADERSHIP Julie Diana Hench (Executive Director) earned a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating summa cum laude, and served as President of the University of Pennsylvania’s Association of Alumnae. During her presidency, Ms. Hench raised funds for student scholarships, organized educational events, and worked to restructure board committees in an effort to better achieve the association’s mission. She has written for Playbill and continues to research and write for various dance publications such as Dance, Dance Spirit, and Pointe, and has been named Contributing Editor at Dance Teacher.

Most recently, Ms. Hench served as Executive Director of Juneau Dance Theatre (JDT), a non-profit arts organization in Juneau, Alaska. She managed all administrative aspects of the school including finances, development, personnel, programming, outreach, promotion and marketing. During her tenure at JDT, Ms. Hench facilitated collaborations with local artists and arts groups to enrich the dancers’ experiences, grow audiences, and broaden the organization’s impact. She helped JDT become a partnering organization with the Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child initiative in an effort to expand arts education in Juneau public schools, and worked with JDT Artistic Director Zachary Hench to create Juneau’s first ever summer intensive program. She also taught all levels of the school and served as a coach for the George Balanchine Trust, enabling the school to present Balanchine’s work onstage.

A native of New Jersey, Ms. Hench studied at the School of American Ballet in New York, where she was a Princess Grace Award nominee. She danced as a principal with San Francisco Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet, performing lead roles in classical repertoire such as La Sylphide, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Sleeping Beauty. She has worked with choreographers such as Christopher Wheeldon, William Forsythe, and Mark Morris, among others, and appeared as a guest artist with New York City Ballet and several international touring groups. Ms. Hench participated in a dancer exchange with the Royal Ballet in London, and was coached by such artists as Lynn Seymour and Sir Anthony Dowell.

She has been a guest teacher at many renowned ballet schools, worked as a private coach and as Ballet Master at Pennsylvania Ballet. She received Isadora Duncan Awards for her dancing at San Francisco Ballet, and the Continuing Education Award for her studies at University of Pennsylvania.

Douglas Martin (Artistic Director) started his ballet training with Dimitri Romanoff at the San Jose Ballet School and was one of six dancers selected by Mikhail Baryshnikov to study in the newly formed American Ballet Theatre School. He was invited to join the Joffrey Ballet in 1984 where, as a principal dancer, he performed roles in ballets

by Ashton, Arpino, Cranko, Balanchine, Joffrey, Taylor, Pendleton, Kudelka and many other great 20th century choreographers.

Martin was featured in performances of Dance in America on PBS and was an original cast member of the historic recreation of Nijinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps. He was among the last dancers of the Joffrey Ballet to spend the majority of his career in the company working under founder Robert Joffrey. Martin joined the Cleveland Ballet in 1991 and danced an array of principal roles including the Minister in Agnes de Mille’s Fall River Legend. In 1993, Martin was invited to join the American Repertory Ballet.

As leading dancer and Ballet Master for ARB, Martin collaborated with directors in creating ballets, including productions as the original cast lead in Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, The Dream and The Nutcracker. Martin continued to be a principal dancer in the company as well as Ballet Master for ARB and ARBW and Principal Faculty for the Summer Intensive until his retirement from performing in 2002. After retiring from ARB as a performer, Martin expanded his teaching, production and choreographic work. Martin has been an integral part of the teaching staff at the Princeton Ballet School, Rutgers University and Westminster Choir College, and has also served as the School’s Music Director and ARBW Ballet Master. He has staged full-length and repertory ballets for several companies, including Romeo and Juliet and Philip Jerry’s Our Town. Additionally, Martin has choreographed for several Princeton Ballet School productions, including Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Don Quixote and Coppélia. In 2010, Mr. Martin became Artistic Director of American Repertory Ballet. Since then, he has premiered a new production of Nutcracker, choreographed several new works including Ephemeral Possessions, Rite of Spring, Firebird, and a full-length Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and last spring, the world premier of his Pride and Prejudice. He has commissioned 30 new works for the company including 19 world premiers.

Pamela Levy (School Director) holds a BFA in Dance from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, and an MA in Dance Education/ABT Ballet Pedagogy from New York University. Her love of dance began as a child at Princeton Ballet School, where she studied with Audrée Estey, Dermot Burke, Sherry Alban, Jane Miller Gifford, Judith Leviton, Alexei Yudenich, Mary Pat Robertson, Virginia Griffee, Christine Sarry and Karen Russo. She continued her studies at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, earning her BFA in arballet.org | 18

Upon graduation, Ms. Levy studied at The Paul Taylor School while beginning studies as a scholarship student at the Nikolais/Louis Dance Lab. She was soon thereafter invited to join the Murray Louis and Nikolais Dance Company, with whom she danced for 10 years in Principal roles throughout the U.S. and Europe. Ms. Levy also danced with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Don Redlich Dance Company and Claudia Gitelman Dance Theatre. Upon retirement from performing, Ms. Levy became the Artistic Director of the newly formed Washington Rock Youth Ballet. Ms. Levy grew the company from eight students to 60, created and implemented a ballet curriculum and launched a full-length Nutcracker production within two years. Ms. Levy continued as Artistic Director of WRYB for 10 years.

Ms. Levy was a member of the inaugural graduating cohort of the New York University, Steinhardt School Master of Arts degree program in Dance Education/American Ballet Theatre Ballet Pedagogy. At NYU/ABT, Ms. Levy was mentored by Raymond Lkens and Franco DeVita and was immediately hired to teach at American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. During that time, Ms. Levy furthered her ballet studies as a student of Mark Morris, Marjorie Mussman, Tina Fehlandt and Lauren Grant at the Mark Morris School in Brooklyn and was the Director of the Mark Morris Student Company II. Since then, Ms. Levy has served on the faculty of ABT — Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School Children’s Division, Young Dancer Summer Workshop, and Summer Intensives, and as a Children’s Ballet Master for Alexei Ratmansky’s Nutcracker at ABT. Ms. Levy is an ABT Affiliate Teacher and serves on the ABT National Training Curriculum Board of Examiners.

She has also taught for American Ballet Theatre’s Make a Ballet Program, Teachers College — Columbia University, Marymount Manhattan College, Berkeley Ballet Theater, Brooklyn Ballet, Barbara Thompson School of Dance, and was the Founding Director of the ABT Certified School at Mason Gross Extension Division. She has choreographed more than 100 original dance pieces on students of all ages and has re-staged numerous classical ballet pieces for student performances.

Audrée Phipps Estey (founder and director of the Princeton Ballet Society) founded Princeton Ballet Society in 1956 and the Princeton Regional Ballet Company in 1963. She served as president and executive vice president of the Northeast Regional Ballet Association from 1967 to 1971 and headed the dance department at Les Chalets Francais, a French camp for girls in Deer Isle, Maine. In 1978, Estey turned the Princeton Regional Ballet into the professional Princeton Ballet Company (which was renamed the American Repertory Ballet in 1991). Estey retired as director in 1982 and moved to Florida, but she continued her involvement with the company as a consultant and advisor until her passing in 2002. arballet.org | 20

Mary Barton (Resident Choreographer and Ballet Master) received her dance training at The Washington School of Ballet under the direction of Mary Day and participated in summer courses at the School of American Ballet and Joffrey Ballet School. Her professional experience began when she performed with The Washington Ballet as a soloist in Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony and in the principal role in Tom Paczik’s Tzigane. In 1986, Ms. Barton joined the Joffrey Ballet/NY where she performed a variety of roles. Robert Joffrey created the role of Clara for her in the world premiere of his Nutcracker. Ms. Barton TV credits include performances in Dance in America on PBS and she was an original cast member of the historic recreation of Nijinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps. From 1993– 2004, Ms. Barton was a principal dancer with American Repertory Ballet; notable roles include Sugar Plum Fairy, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Emily in Our Town and leads in Balanchine’s Four Temperaments, Rubies, Concerto Barocco and Serenade. Ms. Barton has been on the faculty of the Princeton Ballet School since 1994 and is one of the primary teachers and choreographers for the Summer Intensive. She is a former ballet faculty member at Princeton University and current faculty at Rider University’s Music Theater Department. As Resident Choreographer and Ballet Master of ARB, Ms. Barton’s works include Straight Up with a Twist, Five Men and a Concerto, Faerie Tyme, Fantasy Baroque, Shades of Time, A Shepherd Singing (And I Still Heard Nothing) and her newest work Scarlet Sonata. She has also choreographed over two dozen works for Princeton Ballet School’s spring full-length ballets and Summer Intensive. Ms. Barton is a recipient of the prestigeous Audree Estey Award for Excellence in Dance Education from the American Repertory Ballet.

Kirk Peterson (Resident Choreographer) had a distinguished career for 17 years with American Ballet Theatre as principal dancer, choreographer, Artistic Director of ABTII, Ballet Master, Principal Character Artist and as Master Teaching Associate. Peterson was also Artistic Director of the Hartford Ballet for five years. As a choreographer, Peterson has created over 50 ballets including new versions of The Firebird and Le Sacre du Printemps. His choreography has been seen with San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Washington Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, BalletMet, San Francisco Opera and The Royal Ballet School. He is a specialist in re-staging the full-length classical repertoire such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle utilizing original choreography and technique. He was nominated for the prestigeous Prix Benois de la Danse in Moscow for Othello, created for Alberta Ballet. Peterson was resident choreographer for Cincinnati Ballet for six years and he is also a repetiteur for the Antony Tudor Ballet Trust.

Season. In 2013, Peterson choreographed Tears of the Moon for American Repertory Ballet, fulfilling his long-held desire to create a work to music by Beethoven. ARB is thrilled to be producing and performing Mr. Peterson’s newest staging Carmen, his thrilling adaptation of Bizet’s opera to Rodion Shchedrin’s masterful score.

Kathleen Moore (Company Teacher) trained with Dame Sonia Arova and Thor Sutowski at the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) and attended summer intensives at the School of American Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) School. She graduated from ASFA as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and moved to N.Y. to join ABT II in 1980.

Invited by Mikhail Baryshnikov to become a member of the corps of ABT in 1982, Ms. Moore was appointed soloist in 1988 and Principal dancer in 1991. Her work included roles across the classical, dramatic, modern and contemporary repertory. Agnes de Mille, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris and other respected choreographers created roles for her and she was a member of the premiere tour of the White Oak Dance Project under the direction of Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris in 1990. Ms. Moore has appeared in several dance documentaries, the Herbert Ross movie Dancers, and was interviewed on The Charlie Rose Show. Ms. Moore began teaching for Princeton Ballet School in 1993 as a guest teacher and has taught on a regular basis in the school and worked with ARB since 2006. She is also a member of the ballet faculty at the Lewis Center of the Arts at Princeton University. Ms. Moore is certified to teach all levels of ballet through the ABT National Training Curriculum.

Cheryl Whitney (PBW Juniors Ballet Master, PBW Administrator) received an M.S. in Ballet from Indiana University and a B.A. in English Literature and Music from St. Lawrence University. She was trained and performed professionally in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area. For more than 25 years, she has taught in Princeton Ballet School’s Student Division also serving as rehearsal director for the ARB productions of Nutcracker. Guest teaching credits include Brandywine Ballet, Peabody Conservatory and N.J. Governor’s School. Her teaching in academic settings includes Princeton University, Howard University, Indiana University, The Lawrenceville School, Foxcroft School and Latin School of Chicago. She is an associate professor in the dance program at Rider University. Ms. Whitney has received grants from the New York and New Jersey State Councils on the Arts, and is the 2008 recipient of the Audrée Estey Award for Excellence in Dance Education. She is Artistic Director of Reverence Dance Company.

group, Ballet Romantique. She was company teacher, rehearsal assistant and senior faculty member at Hartford Ballet under the Artistic Direction of Kirk Peterson. She has been ballet mistress for BalletMet, Nevada Dance Theatre and coach for the New York International Ballet Competition. In addition, Ms. Youskevitch has taught at such prestigious schools as the David Howard Dance Center, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Virginia School of the Arts under the direction Petrus Bosman, The Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy and The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre. A celebrated teacher and coach for over 40 years, she was featured in the June 2002 issue of Dance Teacher magazine. Well versed in the classical ballet repertoire, she has mounted versions of Giselle, Coppélia, La Fille Mal Gardée and her father’s one-act Romeo and Juliet. She has also staged Michel Fokine’s Spectre de la Rose and Les Sylphides, and the children’s roles in Kirk Peterson’s Nutcracker.

Ms. Youskevitch was also on faculty for ABT’s Young Dancer Summer Workshop in New York City for eight years, and is an ABT Certified Teacher, having completed the ABT National Training Curriculum.

Trisha Wolf (PBW Seniors Ballet Master) received her ballet training at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts and participated in summer courses at ABT and Joffrey Ballet School. Also an accomplished pianist, Trisha has played at Steps on Broadway, Nutmeg Ballet and has been accompanying classes here at Princeton Ballet School since 2008. Currently she is also on staff at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts and is a company pianist at Pennsylvania Ballet and American Ballet Theater.

Laurie Abramson (PBW Juniors Rehearsal Director) received her training at the Joffrey Ballet School and holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from New York University. She has also studied with Alfredo Corvino, David Howard and at The New Dance Group. In addition to her work at Princeton Ballet School, Ms. Abramson is a member of the ballet faculty at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University, and at Montclair State University. She has served as a dance evaluator for the N.J. State Council on the Arts and helped construct and implement the exit exams for the performing arts schools throughout the state for the N.J. Dept. of Education, Visual and Performing Arts. Laurie has received an arts’ educator grant from the N.J. State Council on the Arts to teach and set choreography for various performing arts high schools throughout the state.

Erika Mero (PBW Juniors Teacher) began dance training at Princeton Ballet School. She was a member of the Professional Training Program and Princeton Ballet II. As a dancer in PBW, Ms. Mero appeared as the ballerina role of Swanhilda in Coppélia, and during these years attended The Juilliard School’s summer program. PRINCETON BALLET WORKSHOP Princeton Ballet Workshop is the pre-profressional wing of American Repertory Ballet, comprised of high school and college students who are studying ballet seriously at Princeton Ballet School with the goal of a professional career.

AMERICAN REPERTORY BALLET DANCERS Shaye Firer was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and raised in Vancouver, Canada. She received her early training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and attended various intensive programs such as The National Ballet of Canada, Alberta Ballet, Kaatsbaan International Dance Centre, Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy, and Ellison Ballet. Shaye joined the inaugural class of ARB/ Princeton Ballet School’s Trainee program. As a Trainee, she performed company roles in Nutcracker, Our Town, and Glazunov Variations, as well as the lead role of Swanhilda in Princeton Ballet School’s production of Coppélia. Shaye has received choreographic awards from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and was chosen as one of five choreographers in Houston Ballet Academy’s collaboration with the American Festival for the Arts. Since she joined ARB, she has performed as The Chosen One in Douglas Martin’s Rite of Spring, Titania in Martin’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Sapphire Princess in Martin’s Firebird, Charlotte Lucas in Martin’s Pride and Prejudice, principal roles in Nutcracker and featured roles in works by Patrick Corbin, Kirk Peterson and Trinette Singleton.

She has been with ARB since 2011.

Jacopo Jannelli trained with Fabula Saltis in Rome, with summer programs at TheRoyal Ballet School and Princeton Ballet School. As an ARB Trainee, Jacopo performed lead roles in Princeton Ballet School productions: Toreador in Don Quixote and Siegfried in Swan Lake. Since he joined the company, Jacopo has danced the role of Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, The Ancient One in Rite of Spring, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mr. George Wickham in the world premiere of Martin’s Pride and Prejudice, principal roles in Nutcracker and featured roles in José Limón’s There is a Time and ballets by Trinette Singleton and Kirk Peterson. He has been with ARB since 2014.

Toleu Mukanov was born in Kazakhstan, Asia. He received his early training at the Almaty Choreographic College and then continued on to the Kyrgyzstan Ballet School. In 2002, he was a gold medal recipient at the International Ballet Competition in Crimea, Ukraine, and in 2006 he received a silver medal at the Almaty Ballet Competition. He has had the opportunity to dance with Astana Ballet in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan’s Opera and Ballet Theatre, Moscow’s Russian Ballet Theatre and the Russian National Ballet arballet.org | 30

Mr. Mukanov has performed in a variety of roles including: Basilio in Don Quixote, Golden Idol in La Bayadére, Ali in Le Corsaire, James in La Sylphide, Franz in Coppélia, Jester in Swan Lake, Blue Bird in Sleeping Beauty, Beast in Beauty and the Beast, and Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He was a freelance dancer from 2014-2016 and danced with Roxey Ballet and Charleston City Ballet. In September of 2016, he joined Twin Cities Ballet of Minnesota. He joined ARB in 2017.

Aldeir Monteiro began his training at the Centro de Arte e Dança de Campo Grande in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, coached by Daniel Mendez and directed by Alice Arja. He continued his training at the Miami City Ballet School and joined the Miami City Ballet under the direction of Edward Villella, followed by Lourdes Lopez. Aldeir performed in the original cast of Euphotic choreographed by Liam Scarlett for the Miami City Ballet, which premiered in 2013. His repertoire includes Les Partineurs, Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, Paul Taylor’s Piazzolla Caldera, Alexei Ratmansky’s Symphonic Dances, Balanchine’s La Valse, John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue and others. Since joining ARB in 2016, Aldeir has performed featured and principal roles in Douglas Martin’s Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Kirk Peterson’s Glazunov Variations. He performed the role of Mr. Charles Bingley in the world premiere of Douglas Martin’s Pride and Prejudice.

Mattia Pallozzi was born and raised in Italy where he received his training at the School of Teatro Dell’Opera and then at the Accademia Nazionale Di Danza. During this time, he performed as a soloist in Ugo dell’Ara’s Ballo Excelsior, Vaionone’s The Nutcracker, Ismael Ivo’s Ballo Sports and in the closing ceremony of the 2009 World Swimming Championships choreographed by Wayne McGregor. In 2011 he joined ARB/Princeton Ballet School’s Trainee Program, where he performed the lead role of Basilo in Princeton Ballet School’s production of Don Quixote and danced alongside the company in works by Gerald Arpino, Mary Barton, Ann Marie DeAngelo and Patrick Corbin. He joined ARB in 2012 as an Apprentice-Trainee and in 2013 he was promoted to a full company member. Emily Parker, from Forbes, New South Wales, Australia, started dancing at Lia’s School of Dance at age five. At age 12 she moved to Sydney to attend The McDonald College Performing Arts School training under Josephine Jason, Josh Consandine* and Jane Kesby, completing all RAD levels with distinctions. She performed in a youth ballet company from ages 13–18 with her most prestigious roles being the Sugar Plum Fairy and Black Swan. Emily attended many summer programs, including Sydney Dance Company and Boston Ballet, and performed as a guest artist with The Australian Ballet. Emily joined the ARB trainee program (she won the Audrée Estey scholarship after her first year as an ARB trainee) appearing as the White Swan with ARB Workshop in 2016. She performed alongside the company in their productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Rite of Spring, Romeo and Juliet, Firebird*, Shades of time*, The Nutcracker* and performed the role of Miss Kitty Bennett in the world premiere of Douglas Martin’s Pride and Prejudice.

Emily joined ARB as a full company dancer in 2017.

Erikka Reenstierna-Cates, a California native, received her training under Leslie Ann Larson and Rene Daveluy.

She started dancing professionally with Central West Ballet in 2009, and in 2015 joined Oklahoma City Ballet. She has also danced with Ballet Ireland. Ms. Reenstierna-Cates has been featured in a variety of roles including: Indian Maiden in Paul Vasterling’s Peter Pan; Harem Dancer in Dennis Spaight’s Scheherazade; both a soloist and principal in George Balanchine’s Who Cares?, Valse Fantaisie and Serenade; a soloist in Ronn Guidi’s Trois Gymnopedies; Myrtha in Giselle; a soloist in Val Caniparoli’s Songs and Violin; the Sugarplum Fairy, Snow Queen, Flower Queen and Arabian Coffee in Rene Daveluy’s The Nutcracker; Pas de Trois in Swan Lake and the Fairy Godmother in Daveluy’s Cinderella. Additionally, Erikka is also an up-and- coming choreographer, having created pieces for credits alongside names such as Balanchine and Caniparoli. Since joining American Repertory Ballet, Erikka has performed a featured role in Mary Barton’s Scarlet Sonata and the role of Miss Caroline Bingley in the world premiere of Douglas Martin’s Pride and Prejudice. Erikka joined ARB in 2016.

Lily Saito was born and raised in New York City. She studied at School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet; on scholarship at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Ballet School, the official school of American Ballet Theatre; at Ellison Ballet School and was offered a full scholarship as a trainee at The Washington Ballet. named Young Arts Honorable Mention Award Winner in Dance/Ballet, and in 2014, she was named a finalist and attended the Young Arts finalist week in Florida. As a Washington Ballet trainee for the 2014-2015 season, Lily performed with the Washington Ballet in Septime Webre’s world premiere of Sleepy Hollow and Alice in Wonderland and Kirk Peterson’s Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and the New Movement. Since joining ARB in 2015, Lily has performed featured roles in Mary Barton’s A Shepherd Singing (and I still heard nothing) and Scarlet Sonata, José Limón’s There is a Time, Kirk Peterson’s Glazunov Variations and in Douglas Martin’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Nutcracker. She performed the role of Miss Jane Bennett in the world premiere of Douglas Martin’s Pride and Prejudice.

Giulia Settimo was born in Foggia, Italy. From 2001– 2012 she studied ballet, contemporary and modern dance at Danzàrea (a private school in Foggia). Giulia received several scholarships after her participation in workshops and competitions, including Up to You held by the director of the Opéra National de Paris Claude Bessy. She also received a scholarship to study at the Tanzcompagnie of Giessen in Germany. In 2012 she joined the Accademia Nazionale di Danza in Rome. A year later, in March 2013, she auditioned in Rome for American Repertory Ballet and was accepted into the Trainee Program. She’s danced in several of ARB’s performances, including in works by Mary Barton and in Douglas Martin’s Nutcracker, Firebird, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Rite of Spring, and Pride and Prejudice.

Anna Porter Wilkes-Davis was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. She received her early training at Virginia School of the Arts under the direction of Petrus Bosman and later completed her pre-professional training with the Washington School of Ballet, Miami City Ballet School and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater. In 2010, Anna joined the Columbia City Ballet where she was promoted to soloist.

Her roles with the company included Red and Purple Vampire Maiden in Dracula, The Snow Queen, Arabian Princess and Neapolitan Ice Cream in Nutcracker, the Summer Fairy in Cinderella, the Fairy of Grace and the White Cat of Puss in Boots in The Sleeping Beauty, Moyne in Giselle, and the Snake in the Little Prince. In 2014, she became the Artist in Residence with Ann Brodie’s Carolina Ballet, as well as a guest artist with Greensboro Ballet, Lincoln Midwest Ballet, Coastal Ballet USA, Montgomery Ballet and Hilton Head Dance Theatre where she has performed pas de deuxs from Giselle, Esmeralda, The Sleeping Beauty, Raymonda, Spartacus, Spring Waters, Swan Lake and Nutcracker. Journy Wilkes-Davis was born in Fort Hood, Texas. He began his training at the age of fourteen under Shannon Greenberg and Dagoberto Nieves in Savannah, Georgia and later joined the Signature Dance Ensemble in Rocky Mount, North Carolina to continue his training under Cindy Mancini and Joseph Carow. In 2010, Journy moved to the Columbia City Ballet under the direction of William Starrett where he was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2012. Nanako Yamamoto was born and raised in Japan where she began her training at the Geijutsuza Ballet Studio “Jardin des Arts,” performing such roles as Clara in The Nutcracker, Rose Adagio in The Sleeping Beauty and the title role in Cinderella. In 2005, she was selected to attend the prestigious Royal Ballet Summer School, then auditioned for and was accepted to the Elmhurst School for Dance in Association with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. While a student, she performed in the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s National Tour of Firebird, Fokine’s Petrushka, Petipa’s Raymonda and David Bintlye’s Beauty and the Beast. She performed for his Royal Highness Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall and for the grand re-opening of Birmingham’s town hall. Since graduating in 2009, she has performed with New Tampa Dance Theatre, Dance Theatre of Tampa, Ballet Fleming, in Giselle with Boca Ballet Theatre alongside Julie Kent and Marcelo Gomes, and as soloist in La Bayadere with Gillian Murphy and Jose Manuel Carreño. Since joining arballet.org | 38

PRODUCTION TEAM Lauren Parrish (Production Manager/Lighting Designer) Lauren holds a B.A. in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College, where she graduated in 2007.

She has been the production stage manager and lighting supervisor for Battleworks Dance Company, KEIGWIN + COMPANY, Susan Marshall & Company, BODYTRAFFIC and others. Lauren is the Production Manager/ Lighting Designer for DanceNOW NYC, and the Production Manager for Bessie Award winning Camille A. Brown & Dancers, who will premiere their newest piece, ink, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts this winter. In the next year, she looks forward to a new DanceNOW premiere in collaboration with Megan Williams and tours with the critically acclaimed EnGarde Arts.

Rachel Jacquin Macleod (Company Manager/Assistant Stage Manager) Rachel is a graduate of Rider University: Westminster College of the Arts with a BA in Theater, concentration in Theater Studies, with a minor in American Studies. She works as a Stage Manager throughout the year for DanceNOW @ Joe’s Pub and has worked as the ASM for several other New York City dance companies, such as Douglas Dunn and Dancers (Aidos) & Keigwin+Co. (Kabaret). She has also stage managed for Steps Repertory Ensemble and Soul Arts Academy (The Infinity Wings). Rachel recently worked as the Production Coordinator for the Princeton Festival. She also stage managed a NYC play adaptation of Don Delilo’s novel The Body Artist. This is her 4th season working with ARB (credits include Pride and Prejudice, Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet, Firebird, Rite of Spring, Afternoon of the Faun and Don Quixote). Janessa Cornell Urwin (Wardrobe Supervisor / Costume Designer) Originally from Albany, N.Y., Janessa began her career as a ballet dancer, training at the Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts and dancing with the Roxey Ballet Company and as a trainee with American Repertory Ballet.

Since transitioning into costuming, she has coordinated wardrobe for many productions including ARB’s Nutcracker, Princeton Ballet School’s Don Quixote and Swan Lake, and other repertory programs. She served as seasonal Wardrobe Supervisor at the Bucks County Playhouse, working on numerous plays and musicals. She was privileged to work with the original cast of Mothers and Sons, a critically acclaimed drama on Broadway. Janessa’s design work with ARB includes Mary Barton’s Shades of Time, Scarlet Sonata, Kirk Peterson’s Glazunov Variations, and Carmen.

Allison Bonin (Wardrobe Assistant) In Spring of 2016 Allison Bonin graduated from the Maine College of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in fashion and textile design with a minor in art history. During her time in Portland, she interned with Portland Ballet’s costume designer, Amy Baxter, for two full seasons where she created costumes for several productions including Boy Meets Girl, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Portland Ballet’s Victorian Nutcracker. As Pamela Moulton’s studio assistant, Allison completed a number of freelance projects for many creative clients, such as the creation of life-sized puppets for Fritz Grobe’s Traveling Light, and the design and installation of set pieces for Sara Juli’s Tense Vagina.

Tony Crawford (Technical Director) is a technical director for dance based in Brooklyn, NY. Previously, he was an Assistant Technical Director for New York City Ballet and The Richmond Ballet; Technical Director for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet; Operations and Production Manager for Jacob’s Pillow, Stage Manager for The Richmond Ballet’s Mind in Motion Education Outreach Program and Light Designer for Melissa Barak’s Eos Chasma (2014). Outside of dance, he is a Production Manager for The Working Theater, Scenic Artist for Birmingham Children’s Theater and Black Hills Playhouse. Mr. Crawford studied at Lincoln College, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and Cobalt Studios.
