Letter from the CEO/President and A/S Officers Greetings and a warm welcome to the Big Apple and the beautiful, historic Salmagundi Club…home of our milestone 20th Annual American Impressionist Society National Juried Exhibition! It is such an honor for AIS to exhibit here in New York and such a fitting place to celebrate our twentieth anniversary. This year’s exhibition features 150 juried works from our members as well as works from our AIS Masters, Founders and Officers, for a total of nearly 175 paintings. This is an exceptional collection of some of the finest Impressionist paintings available today. Sincere congratulations to this year’s juried artists for their outstanding achievement in being selected for this prestigious exhibition. The American Impressionist Society was founded in 1998 by Florida artists William Schultz, Charlotte Dickinson, and Marjorie Bradley of Vero Beach, and Pauline Ney, of Ellenton. Their goal was, and our goal continues to be, to promote the appreciation of American Impressionism and to provide artists working in the Impressionist genre with exhibition, educational and networking opportunities. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We currently have over 1600 active members across the United States. Membership in AIS is open to American Impressionist artists who are legal U.S. residents and anyone who would like to support AIS as a supporting member or patron. Please visit our website, www.americanimpressionistsociety.org or follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date on the latest events and opportunities. You will find more information about membership on our website and also on the inside back page of this catalog. Putting together an exhibition of this caliber takes an extraordinary amount of time and hard work, and we would personally like to thank everyone who has had a part in this year’s show. From the board and officers of the Salmagundi Club, to all of our generous sponsors, all of our volunteers, our members and donors, all who submitted work for jurying this year, the jury panel, our esteemed AIS Masters, our judge of awards and workshop instructor Kevin Macpherson, AISM (who was our very first Best of Show award winner in 1999!), our AIS Board, Founders and Educational Program Director Vanessa Rothe, sincere thanks to you all. This show would not be possible without each and every one of you. Thank you for your time, your hard work and your dedication to AIS. Finally, it’s our pleasure to invite you to enjoy this beautiful collection of Impressionist works of art. We encourage you to contact us when you find one that speaks to your heart. On behalf of our Board, founder Charlotte Dickinson, and Co-founder Pauline Ney, thank you so much for your support of American Impressionism and the American Impressionist Society, Inc, and thank you for celebrating with us as we mark our 20th Anniversary National Juried Exhibition here in New York City! Warmest wishes, Debra Joy Groesser, AIS CEO/President Don Groesser, AIS National Treasurer Cheryl St. John, AIS Vice President Doreen St. John, AIS Secretary

Juror of Awards Kevin Macpherson, AISM Bio Kevin Macpherson’s intent as a painter is to capture the light that infuses every scene. He is a magician of light and shadow, but more than that, he distills the essence from the landscape, creating a finished painting that is both universal and very personal. A few pure paint colors, masterfully blended, turn into thousands of nuanced, impressionistic brush strokes. From a freely applied abstract foundation, a colorful representation emerges. Kevin paints fast, accurately, and intuitively, using methods that are grounded in years of academic training. His paintings are poetic, and his vocabulary is color. Besides an accomplished painter, Kevin is a gifted writer and published author as well as a teacher and guest lecturer. He is regarded as a master mentor, a reputation well earned by years of teaching international workshops and giving personal guidance to many aspiring artists. In addition to several videos, he has authored four books, Reflections on a Pond, Fill Your Oil Paintings With Light and Color, Landscape Painting-Inside and Out, and Conversations With Nature: Oil Painting in the Tradition of Plein Air. Kevin has been a producer of a nationwide 13-part television series “Passport and Palette.”

“If light and air are the subjects, then there are never-ending views of the same scene. My goal for all paintings is to orchestrate the momentary effect into a complete statement.” ~Kevin Macpherson

Kevin Macpherson was the first president of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America. He is a Master Artist of the California Art Club (CAC), the American Impressionist Society (AIS), and Oil Painters of America (OPA). Galleries in New Mexico, South Carolina, China and California represent his work. Kevin founded “Art Ambassador for a Colorful World” (artambassador.org), a nonprofit foundation for teaching art and bringing joy to the aspiring hearts of underprivileged children, especially in Central America and China. Throughout his career he has devoted significant energy nurturing the next generation. www.kevinmacpherson.com email: mwanda1901@yahoo.com “Abuela” Watercolor • 18x12 by Kevin Macpherson

Letter from Founder, Charlotte Dickinson It is truly a historic event for the American Impressionist Society’s 20th National Exhibit to be hanging on the walls of the prestigious Salmagundi Club on 5th Avenue in New York City. This is the location that the first American Impressionists decided to meet when they returned from studying with Monet and the other Impressionists. It has remained their home base since that time. The AIS is being recognized as the next generation of Impressionist painters with the responsibility of creating great works and leaving a visible legacy of this century. We are all blessed to be part of a group that is able to exhibit in the best galleries in the USA, as well as being able to support each other, network, share ideas and inspire others. This was the initial intent when AIS was founded and it continues today. Our original founders, master artists, past and present presidents and officers, board, sponsors, members, and volunteers have all contributed to making a legacy to be proud of in AIS. We must especially thank Debra Joy Groesser and Don Groesser for stepping forward to bring the AIS to where it is today. When TR Dickinson and I were preparing to retire and were looking for someone to take the reins of AIS, TR said “God put Debra’s name on my lips.” We truly believe it was help from above that brought us together, as we had only met her once prior to that time. We have been thankful ever since. Debra and Don both know and are dedicated to the premises of fairness and integrity, which has made the AIS one of the most respected art organizations in America. Respectfully Yours, Charlotte Dickinson, AIS Founder

“American Impressionism is the favorite genre of the American People”

~ Joy Eakin, longtime AIS Secretary

The History of AIS as told by Charlotte Dickinson, Founder Transcribed from Charlotte’s video on the “About Us” section of our website. “Many years ago, while taking my mentor, Charles Movalli, to the airport after a wonderful workshop, he asked me, “Do you know William Schultz? He’d be like a finishing school for you.” When I got home, I called Bill Schultz and studied with him for the next ten years with his teaching, his mentoring and his inspiration. He was the most wonderful teacher! I wanted to pay it forward and help him find more venues to exhibit his work. I approached the Lake Wales Art Center in Florida and asked if they would be willing to show our work. They said they only show affiliated artists and asked if we were affiliated and I said, “Oh yes!” Then as I left the building I thought to myself “oh liar, liar pants on fire!” But I made up for it…and when I got home I called Bill Schultz, Marjorie Bradley and Pauline Ney, and we got affiliated. Hence our first show was held at the Lake Wales Art Center with six artists showing. And look how it has grown. The AIS loves to help artists fulfill and reach their goals by having great venues all over the country to show their work.” For the rest of the story, you can view the entire video on the “About Us” section of our website.

Rooted in French Impressionism and Carrying on the Tradition Today In Paris, France, around the mid 1800’s, there had existed for many years a famous annual fine art exhibition originally held in the upper rooms of the Louvre Palace, entitled “The Salon des Beaux Arts” (Beaux Arts meaning Fine Art). The Salon was explicitly curated and was an arduously juried exhibition of works meeting the highest standards of realist academic quality. They were indeed hostile toward any bold new art and stood by their rigorous approval methods. Often as many as 3,000 works were denied entrance. In 1863, there were a great many works refused to the Salon and Napoleon, not wanting to upset the artists and voters as it was an election year, hence created the Salon de Refusés, for the refused works that did not meet the rigorous realist criteria to be shown together. It was here that the new works by artist Edouard Manet were shown depicting everyday scenes with the use of more lively visual brushwork. Instead of the usual iconic heroic, historical or mythical based themes, Manet’s works allowed the viewer into the scene themselves, paintings from daily life with characters that one could actually recognize. His bold work influenced many artists, in particular, Claude Monet who had begun painting landscapes. Following his friend Eugène Boudin painting live on the shores of the Normandy coast and later influenced by the Barbizon School’s landscapes in the country, Monet became one of the first Impressionist painters. Before this time, every day scenes and simple landscapes were not considered final works of art, suitable to exhibit or sell. “Impressionism” as it later became known was a brand new form of art. Born from this new subject matter and the use of more color, bold visible brushwork, and especially portraying the effects of light and atmosphere, Impressionism, at first looked down upon as unfinished works, became one of the most well known art genres of the art world. French Impressionism spread not only to other areas of the world such as Russia, but had a profound impact on some important Americans studying abroad in France. www.AmericanImpressionistSociety.org

Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, James McNeil Whistler, Guy Rose and many more, all picked up influences from this new style of painting and began to incorporate its colors and effects into their works. Unlike the newspapers and buyers in Paris, American collectors seemed to be more open and accepting of this new style of work. One very important art dealer from the time, Mr. Durand Ruel, took this influence one step further by bringing over 300 Impressionist works by Eduard Monet, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Gustave Caillebotte, and more to New York in 1886 in an important exhibition that would reach and directly influence more American painters such as Childe Hassam and William Merit Chase. These early American Impressionists later formed groups such as The Ten, including Robert Reid, John H. Twachtman, Edmund Tarbell, Willard Metcalf, Whistler and Chase. They would funnel down the Impressionists techniques, colors and influence to the rest of America in their own schools and ateliers. Impressionism had spread from these first schools on the East coast all the way to the West by 1910 and lasted till about 1935 creating legendary California Impressionists artists such Edgar Payne, William Wendt and of course Guy Rose who had painted alongside Monet himself. The American Impressionist Society, Inc. define American Impressionism as “The concern for light on form, color, and brushstrokes. Allowing equal latitude between these attributes, and recognizing not a single definitive element, but several factors–including high key light and hue, visual breakdown of detail, concern for contemporary life, and cultivation of direct and spontaneous approaches to a subject.” AIS is very proud to have grown to be one of the most respected national art organizations in America. Rooted in this rich history, we aim to continue the tradition. AIS preserves the Impressionist values and endeavors to bring you new works from artists working in the tradition today each year in our annual exhibitions such as this. We thank you for your continued support. Vanessa Françoise Rothe AIS Educational Advisor and Signature Member

A/S Legacy Awards

In 2003, Mary Garrish noted an ad for the American Impressionist Society and immediately joined. Soon after, she met Charlotte Dickinson at a workshop that Bill Schultz was teaching in Vero Beach. Bill was Charlotte’s mentor and is to whom AIS is dedicated. In 2005 Mary left a career in ENT Surgery, and transitioned to painting full time Later that year, Charlotte asked Mary to take the helm of the organization and Mary responded enthusiastically. At that time, AIS had a smaller membership, and Mary sought to increase that membership and quality of the shows. There were a few Signature members, but few of national prominence. At a CW Mundy workshop in France in 2006, Mary began to strategize with CW. They soon became friends and began planning to expand and strengthen AIS membership, an effort which went on for the next six years! CW proposed adding a new category of Master members, and both Mary and CW began to invite a number of nationally prominent painters. At the same time, Mary went to the AIS board to boost the advertising budget in order to increase membership. She also started offering workshops in conjunction with the AIS shows and had Master artists teach at those events.

AIS grew steadily in prominence and membership while Mary was President from 2005 through 2009. She stepped down in early 2009 to work on her painting but served as Vice President of AIS for the next few years. In 2012, Mary and CW helped organize a National Master Symposium in Indianapolis at the Herron School of Art and Design, where several Master AIS members instructed and at which CW was a special speaker.

CW Mundy and Mary Garrish met for the first time in France in 2006 through En Plein Air Masters, a mentorship art program organized by Kevin Macpherson. Following their meeting in France, Mary and CW’s friendship continued, sometimes meeting in Florida to paint together. At this time, Mary was President of the American Impressionist Society, and wanting to gain exposure for the organization. Mary asked CW to be involved with AIS, and invited him to judge and speak at the AIS National in Chicago in 2007. CW was again invited to judge the AIS National in 2010, this time in Nashville, TN. During these years, Mary and CW worked together to develop the “Masters” Category of AIS, to help promote and build the organization. The AIS National came to the Herron Art School in Indianapolis in 2012. Mary Garrish was very integral in the organization of the venues and events, and CW was invited to be one of the guest speakers. Mary and CW have worked closely together throughout these years, 2006 - 2012, to help promote and develop American Impressionist Society.
