Project: Updated, cleaned headstones, planted flowers, and built a bench for Palmer River Cemetery
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: The best advice I have is to start your project early and outline a plan for what you will accomplish. When deciding what to do for your project, you should follow your heart because a project motivated by love will be the most effective and satisfying.
Future Plans: I will attend Barnard College of Columbia University this fall. I plan to major in Psychology and possibly minor in Dance. Thereafter, I am considering obtaining my Juris Doctorate to become an attorney.
Project: Built a concrete bridge over a creek at St. Thomas Aquinas College
Identify how God is working in your life: I have grown closer to the Lord through this experience. Just letting Him guide me and help me when I’m stressed and feeling like I won’t be able to do it has been a great blessing. Trusting Him and asking Him to let me do His will throughout this project has, at times, challenged me but also sustained me. It has also helped me practice different virtues such as patience, trust, gratitude, and so much more!
Olivia Andrews | TN5624
Cora Amoss | MI3130
Project: Updated youth room for Flint First Wesleyan Church
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Pray! Pray throughout your project. It helps, I prayed throughout mine because things went wrong on day one and I was feeling nervous about the other three days ahead. The Lord knows our feelings and talking to Him about it really calms down stress and anxiety from the project.
Identify how God is working in your life: The Stars & Stripes Award project showed me the endurance you need to be a good leader. I really tried to implement the Fruit of the Spirit into how I handled the project.
Project: Built bench dressers for Camp Ta-Pa-Win-Go
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding experience was seeing it all come together. It was a testament that all my hard work (and the hard work of my family and friends) over the past few weeks has been worth it, and it reminded me that it all had a purpose.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Don’t give up. It’s a hard process; it takes time and sometimes tears, but it is so worth it. Keep going!

Project: Created a mosaic background for a statue of Mary at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center
Identify how God is working in your life: Through this project, I have grown closer to God. He has shown me that I can complete what seems impossible if I set my mind to it. I have found that faith and determination are the keys to success when challenges arise. Prayer is usually the best solution. Not only will God help you work through challenging obstacles, but your relationship with Him will become closer the more you pray.
Project: Built three photo boards with animals painted on them for Flamingo Gardens
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding experience during my Stars & Stripes Award process was when I finally finished implementing my project and finished the paperwork.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: The advice I would give to other candidates would be to NEVER expect your project to unfold according to plan. God has a plan, and if something goes wrong with your plan...it will be okay. Pray, hope, and believe in God, if you can’t see how you can possibly complete the project, He can, and He can help you.
Addison Baker | SC2222
Avery Armstrong | TN7712
Project: Built a rolling worktable, and modular shelves, and created a mural for Clothe Our Kids
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: My greatest challenge was not becoming overwhelmed during the Stars & Stripes Award process. I would communicate my thoughts and ask for advice when needed I also made a prayer wall to focus my prayer time and intentionally listen to God’s direction.
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding experience during the Stars & Stripes Award process was serving a need that God put on my heart that will have a positive lasting impact in my community.

Identify how God is working in your life: I have definitely grown spiritually in patience and perseverance through the Stars & Stripes Award process. It was great to be able to complete a project that also serves the youth of Holly Ridge and is part of an outreach. I cannot wait to see how God uses me in the future for His glory.

People can tell how passionate you are about your project when you discuss it with someone. It can open opportunities you didn’t even know were possible. Just taking the time to talk about what you’re doing to help others shows that you care about your project.

Tia Bethards | MO3412
Julia Bennett | IA2016
Project: Built 32 cubby units for kids for Boys & Girls Club

Project: Created a sensory garden for Tulsa Hills Youth Ranch
Most rewarding experience you had during the Stars & Stripes Award process: I enjoyed heading up the project workdays as managing the service project had a different set of responsibilities than volunteering for one. It was so fulfilling to see the garden idea come to life.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Remember, in this project and going forward in life, you need to rely on your community. People are a lot kinder than what anxiety may tell you.
Project: Built a gazebo, benches, and a coffee bar for Canyon Community Church of the Nazarene
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Pray. Please remember to pray. It can seem tedious, unnecessary, or even intimidating, but praying with my parents or Mentor before each workday, with my volunteers, and on my own truly helped me to center my project and remind myself of its purpose and Provider. Stepping back and thanking God, casting your cares on Him, or blurting out all your concerns, frustrations, and uncertainties in a disorganized jumble (as I tend to do) can truly make a difference. Not because those things go away, but because the Lord reminds us how small the sorrows are and how great the service is!

Most rewarding experience you had during the Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding experience was seeing the reactions of the church members to the library. Everyone was so appreciative and excited.

Project: Created a documentary on the history of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: The main advice I would give to other candidates is not to procrastinate and to stay on top of your homework for the Project Idea and the Project Description
Favorite memory or experience in AHG: Over my years in AHG, I learned many things about myself, such as thinking outside the box, and getting over fears (such as heights, starting a campfire, speaking up for myself, and defending my faith). I learned to be adventurous and developed an appreciation of the outdoors because it is a means of connecting with God. The most important thing that I will take away from American Heritage Girls is being a servant leader, which means serving God and neighbor in a loving manner.

Project: Built four picnic tables, refurbished three picnic tables, and painted handrails on a ramp for the Autauga County Fair
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: I completed the project just before the Fall County Fair began. I overheard many people at the fair comment on how good the tables looked. I felt like I really made a difference. It was rewarding to see people using and enjoying something I worked so hard for.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: My advice would be to get started immediately and not procrastinate. It’s a lot less stressful and you will enjoy the experience more if you get the hard tasks out of the way quickly.

Identify how God is working in your life: Throughout the award process I have grown spiritually by realizing that the opinion of God and keeping my word is far more important than the approval and praise of man. Faith Gella | CA0222
Project: Built a one-step deck for Restore Women’s and Children’s Home
Favorite memory or experience in AHG: American Heritage Girls had a huge impact on my life because I learned valuable skills that will take me far in life. I‘ve learned basic skills such as how to treat injuries, cook over a fire, and make a shelter. AHG has given me opportunities that I most likely would have never done, such as backpacking for the first time, going to summer camp, and finally finding the most fun and caring friends.

Future plans: I plan to attend Miami University and secure a career that allows me to work with the deaf community.
Most challenge obstacle you overcame during the Stars & Stripes Award process: The most challenging obstacle I overcame was letting go of the need to be in control. And this falls back to what I think represents the characteristics of a good leader. When you are a leader, there is a difference between controlling people and leading people. It was somewhat difficult at times not to micromanage certain activities for my volunteers. It was also hard to accept the lack of control, when the first organization backed out of my original project for unknown reasons.

Getting past my desires and wants to see what God had planned. Overcoming this challenge was not easy, and I struggled with it every day. However, I learned to stop, remind myself of everything that God has done so far, and breathe. Each time it was a struggle; however, each time, it got just a little bit easier.

Project: Built a sand volleyball court for Life Pentecostal Church
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: I found it challenging leveling the ground for the volleyball court since the space I had to work with was slanted. I overcame it with lots of prayer! God sent me professionals that helped me make the right choices.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Don’t give up! Difficult situations and circumstances may arise, but you just have to remember that it’s all for God’s glory, and He is the only one who can help you through it all. This experience will bless you and will prepare you for real life, so, no matter what, don’t give up!

Favorite Bible verse: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also” (Matthew 5:38-39, NIV).
Favorite memory or experience in AHG: My favorite AHG memory was a Christmas camp that my Troop did. My friends and I offered to help cook the dinner and we spent the whole day in the kitchen hanging out and cooking.

Project: Built sets of dioramas, figurines, and other materials for Catechesis at Old St. Patrick Church
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: My most rewarding experience was seeing all of the completed dioramas sitting in the atrium. It really cemented the fact that my project will be used to teach children about God for years to come.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Trust the people around you, trust your Mentor, trust your fellow girls, and most importantly trust God. Delegate! You can’t do everything yourself, and you can’t have total control over every little thing. If the people around you are capable and ready to help, let them!
Project: Created a seven-station prayer walk and built two picnic tables for Restoration Ranch
Future plans: I plan to attend college in the fall to major in English Education and minor in Spanish.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Don’t be afraid to talk about your project to others. I was shy at first, but once I told people, they started asking me about it on their own. That was hugely encouraging to me and helped spread the word about my project.

Project: Reorganized two rooms for storage for the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter
Identify how God is working in your life: I grew spiritually through this project. I felt like I had a plan, but God had another plan. It was really eye-opening to just sit back and let Him take the lead on things like the schedule and timing of it all.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: I cannot stress this enough: no matter how much time you think you have, do not procrastinate. As soon as you get your candidacy approved, treat this as if you only have a month to complete everything!

Project: Built a lasting, custom-designed online communication system for Rockville Women’s Center
Identify how God is working in your life: This experience allowed me to grow spiritually in my walk with God. At times, I felt inadequate, overwhelmed, or unmotivated to finish the project. However, I was reminded that this project was not my project, but God’s project. If He wanted this project to be implemented, He would work to make it happen. Completing this project was such an empowering experience because I witnessed God use me in a way that I had never experienced before.
Project: Created sensory boards for Kids At First, at First Baptist of Lewisville
Identify how God is working in your life: During this project, I grew spiritually through learning to put more trust in the Lord. My natural instinct when I encounter difficulties is to panic and try to handle everything myself. In this project, there were a lot of things I couldn’t control and that made me very stressed during the early planning stages of my project. I also had a lot of fear that it wouldn’t turn out well in the end. However, time after time, whenever a situation looked out of control, God steered it for the better. I have learned to stop worrying about all the minor details that I can’t control and to trust that God will guide me.

Project: Built two foldable bookcases and refurbished the bookmobile for Book’em Organization
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Never give up. Those dreams aren’t impossible. Also, keep praying. I prayed a lot, and it really helped me through.

Project: Cleaned and reorganized a library for Family Fellowship Church of God
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: My most rewarding experiences were making God’s house look nicer and giving my church a place to check out books, read, or pray.

Project: Installed an outdoor patio area and seating for Black Hills Church of Christ
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The greatest challenge I faced during the award process was the same accomplishment I am the proudest of committing to putting my service plans for the patio into action and STARTING. There was so much that I needed to schedule, money that I needed to raise, and things I needed to research in more detail. The number of tasks I was responsible for overwhelmed me. Thankfully, I was surrounded by people who supported me, and with God’s help, I was able to persevere.
Project: Renovated a storage closet for Sarah’s Home
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: For me, the most challenging aspect of this project was the longevity of the process, which required me to have perseverance. It was also helpful that the project was for an organization that I was passionate about serving, which provided me with encouragement.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Communication with the benefiting organization, the Troop, potential volunteers, and the Stars & Stripes Mentor is essential. It can help bring different perspectives, unexpected problems, and solutions for challenges to light that the candidate may not have considered yet.

Project: Built a bolted-down sunshade for The Call House
What was the most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding parts were the workdays and building process. Having my friends, teachers, and people who I care about come and help me and spare their time meant the world to me.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: To the next candidate, my advice would be to have everything organized. I did not do that, and it caused me a lot of stress. I would also advise going to local businesses for donations instead of big businesses.
Project: Updated an art room and added storage space for Mountain View Community Church
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most challenging part of the process was the time limit. There were things that got thrown at me last minute (an ice storm, for example), and I had to work around those, occasionally setting up workdays the day of to get the project done in time.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Keep an eye on the time limit, communicate well, and make sure everyone is on the same page with expectations.

Project: Updated the landscaping around the perimeter of Hillside Christian Academy
Identify how God is working in your life: I have learned to trust in God to provide for my needs and make a way when things get tricky. He has answered my prayers about this project in bigger ways than I had ever asked for and allowed me to continue my project through my Troop closing. Even when I can’t see the outcome, I know that God has a plan, and He will provide.
Project: Renovated two classrooms for First Baptist Church
Future plans: I plan to attend Vincennes University in the fall.
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding experience of my Stars & Stripes Award project was when I was adding the final touches to the rooms. The hardest part was over. The rest of the process was just a little more paperwork and then the Board of Review. The end was in sight, and it was very rewarding to see the fruits of my labor come to life.

Project: Built a Blessing Box and stocked it with food items for Rebekah’s Lodge
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: The most rewarding experience was installing the blessing box and stocking it with food items. Then returning the next day and seeing that someone had already removed some things from the box. I was thrilled to see that the blessing box was already being utilized and making a difference in someone’s day.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Be willing to adapt if your project is not going as planned. Use your skills; know that it will all work out with prayer and perseverance.
Project: Build a cedar chest on wheels for donations at Froggy’s Closet
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Prepare yourself for the mental challenges. The Stars & Stripes Award process will push you past your limits. Most importantly, be open-minded to the spiritual lessons God will put you through as a Stars & Stripes Award Candidate.
Favorite Bible Verse: “He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers” (Exodus 35:35, NIV).

Project: Constructed three book carts for Reading for Change
Identify how God is working in your life: This experience grew me spiritually by helping me develop the right skills to further bless the Kingdom of God. I was also able to see how God can make a way for a big project to be manageable and easy to complete with His guidance. He also revealed to me that no matter how progressive the world may become towards children, we can minister and grow the next generation of Christ’s followers with kindness and patience.
Project: Built a tool shed, and two picnic tables for the Giving Garden at Resurrection: A United Methodist Church
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: My advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates would be to have a good support system. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you, pray for you, and be there for you. It can be anyone: peers, adults, younger girls, family, within AHG, or outside of AHG. Just have people you can lean on and will support you. I would also say not to procrastinate. It can be easy to look at all the time you have left to complete the process and just keep putting it off. But I would encourage everyone to stick with it, do a little bit every day, and not drag out the process.

Project: Created a butterfly garden and garden boxes for the Lakewood Police Athletic League
Future plans: In the fall, I plan to attend Lynn University’s Professional Pilot Program, where I will train to become a commercial airline pilot and earn my bachelor’s degree.
Favorite memory or experience in AHG: One of my favorite memories was being able to welcome my Korean War veteran neighbor, the late Mr. Wolfson, home from an Honor Flight. This will always be a wonderful reminder of how even small acts of service, like showing up to an Honor Flight, can change a life.
Project: Built four wooden bookshelves for a classroom at Lumen Christi Catholic School
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: It was very rewarding to deliver the shelves to the school and see the reaction of the benefiting organization representative. Over the next week, I received many reports of how much the students and teachers liked the shelves. It was wonderful to know I contributed to that.
Favorite memory or experience in AHG: I have many good memories with AHG. Summer camp at Camp Chief Little Turtle is where I learned to step out of my comfort zone, make friends, and practice outdoor skills. Being in skits with my friends is still one of my favorite things to do with AHG.

Project: Built storage cubbies for Inspire Studios
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: This project had its ups and downs with learning curves for me. I learned new skills and refreshed old ones. While I excelled at other parts of the project, I struggled with the fine details. I had a vision, and I knew what I wanted, but the extra prep to get the exact inches, number of volunteers, and products was a struggle for me. I struggled a lot with discouragement and hopelessness and wanting to just quit. I overcame it by pushing through, figuring out as I went, and being blessed with volunteers who knew what they were doing when I for sure didn’t.
Project: Updated youth chapel for Cross Fellowship Church
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: Keep an open mind in the beginning. My original plan going into the process was completely different from what actually happened, and, while I don’t regret anything, I wish I wouldn’t have been so dead set on my plan and not God’s. I had a really hard time, in the beginning, being anxious about the things we would need but didn’t have yet. It took me a while to see that God was on my side.

Project: Updated a play area, added a bench, bird bath, and perennials for Calvary Christian Church
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: The main advice I would give future candidates would be to complete their project over the summer. This ensures that you have at least three months to complete the construction part of your project, giving you much more time and flexibility to meet with your volunteers for workdays. The weather is generally good over the summer and your volunteers will be much more flexible without the worry of volunteering for hours at a time on top of going to school and working.
Project: Installed a fence, two gaga-ball pits, and cleared landscape for Redeemer Orthodox Presbyterian Church
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: If I could go back and change something about my project, I would start it a lot sooner. I allowed my fear of failure to get in the way of simply getting it done.
Identify how God is working in your life: I have grown spiritually from this experience. I’ve learned to trust God more and to ask Him for help in discipline every day.

Project: Built a fence, installed a garden dripline and planted flowers for RESTORE Ministries
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: I would advise focusing on achieving the award for Christ, not themselves. It is easy to achieve this major accomplishment for the accolade itself, but without spiritual motivation and help from the Lord, it is more difficult and less rewarding.
Favorite memory or experience in AHG: One of my favorite memories is when we did the Public Speaking Badge. It was something none of us expected to enjoy, but everyone came up with super creative and comedic speeches, and we all laughed so much.
Project: Built a bookcase and hosted a book drive for Harris County District Attorney Crimes Against Children Division
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: It was rewarding to know that I am helping children in need and making a difference.

Project: Built a gaga-ball pit and spectator benches for Northside Church
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: I see the gaga-ball pit being used every Sunday, and how many kids have enjoyed it. I hope even a tiny thing like building a gaga pit can excite someone about coming to church, growing in their faith, and trusting in Jesus.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: I advise future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates to start earlier than you think. It will take longer than you think because you must get approved for every step you complete.
Project: Constructed a two-tier garden and retaining wall for Twin Pines Camp
Future plans: I plan to attend Pennsylvania State University and major in Environmental Science.
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: The piece of advice that I would give is to slow down. It could be helpful to think through every single detail about this project beforehand. So that when it becomes time to implement the project, it’s not stressing you out because you’re already prepared. Make sure to also have fun. This project was super enjoyable for me looking back now. So also try to find it enjoyable.

Project: Remodeling a Craft Cabin for Camp Fontanelle
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award Candidates: As I look back on my project, I think about how cool it is to see how God used me! Finally, and one of the hardest, yet most important lessons that I learned, don’t be afraid to ask for help. People are normally willing and happy to help; you just need to ask them!
Identify how God is working in your life: I think the way that I grew spiritually through this project was through perseverance. God gave me the strength and the help I needed to keep going when things got hard.
Project: Renovated and expanded a kitchen at Faith Orthodox Presbyterian Church
Advice for future Stars & Stripes Award
Candidates: Advice I would offer other Stars & Stripes Award Candidates is to truly remember that what they are doing to serve others glorifies God. Colossians 3:2324, ESV says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Realizing how blessed I am, helped me grow spiritually through this project. So many generous people gave their time to assist me and tirelessly served my church through this project. Seeing the selflessness and examples of God’s love around me as we worked together was inspiring.

Project: Built two drop-off boxes for VFW Post 2527 of Rockne
Future plans: I plan to attend trade school to become a cosmetologist.
Most challenging obstacle you overcame during your Stars & Stripes Award process: I found it most challenging to find enough volunteers and deal with the heat during workdays. I overcame that because my amazing friends volunteered their own time to help, and we made sure we had shade and water for everyone.
Most rewarding experience during your Stars & Stripes Award process: I did grow spiritually, I prayed to God every day to make sure that we would be able to complete the boxes to the best of my ability.
