Dear Friends,

On February 8, 1797, Abigail Adams (First Lady and AHG Level Award Namesake) wrote to her husband John, on the occasion of his election as the second President of the United States and referred to 1 Kings 3:7-9.

“You have this day to declare yourself head of a nation. ‘And now, O Lord, my God, Thou hast made thy servant ruler over the people. Give unto him an understanding heart, that he may know how to go out and come in before this great people; that he may discern between good and bad. For who is able to judge this thy so great a people?’ were the words of a royal Sovereign; and not less applicable to him who is invested with the Chief Magistracy of a nation, though he wear not a crown or the Robes of Royalty. Although personally absent, my petitions to Heaven are that ‘the things which make for peace may not be hidden from your eyes.’ That you may be enabled to discharge them with honor to yourself, with justice and impartiality to your country and with satisfaction to this great people shall be the daily prayer of your Abigail Adams.”

What a beautiful letter Abigail wrote to her beloved husband as he began his patriotic duty of serving his country in the highest position of the land. As the First Lady, Abigail knew the importance of the humble posturing of man while assuming a position of great influence. As a patriot, Abigail knew that our nation would not thrive without the mercies and blessings of the Almighty.

Today, while our leaders tend to be reticent in speaking of the role of God in their life, submission to the Lord is integral to justly lead a nation. We as citizens, first of heaven and secondly of the United States of America, must realize our role in honoring our leaders for their position while electing those who wish to honor the truths of our Creator. We cannot separate our beliefs as a person from our actions as a citizen. This issue of Heritage Headlines focuses on finding unity and Godliness in our American Patriotism. May we always humble ourselves to the “Royal Sovereign,” though he does not wear a crown or a robe of royalty. May our belief in our Creator and the Biblical Truth with which He has gifted us, color all aspects of our life, including our role as a citizen.

May the Lord bless you as you serve Him,

SHINING their light as members of AHG Troops NY4813 and WV0058!

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

OREGON TROOP SERVES AT WORLD TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

When major events come to an AHG Troop’s community, there is a unique opportunity for the world to see AHG Girls serving in a variety of creative ways. For OR0001, the World Athletics Track Championship competition afforded their Girl Members a chance to both experience world-class athletics and serve in the event’s festivities. Cora, Adri, Caitlin, and Natalia served as flag bearers in this year’s Championship competition in Eugene, Oregon. Over 2,000 athletes competed from all around the globe. Cora, a Tenderheart, said this has inspired her to learn about another country! This was the first time the event was held on United States soil, so the Troop jumped at the chance to serve. Caitlin, a Patriot, said of the opportunity: “My favorite part was fist bumping the Governor of Oregon and waving my flag with a cheerful attitude.”

AHG TROOP IN ARIZONA PACKS BIRTHDAY BAGS, DELIVERS TO FAMILIES IN NEED OF RESOURCES

The AHG Oath ends with “serve in my community.” This pledge fuels girls to creatively serve people locally. The Harriet Tubman Level Award holds a service requirement—the perfect way to live out that portion of the AHG Oath. Josie and Troop AZ1318 have a heart to serve foster families and adoptive families and wanted to celebrate those kids on their birthdays. So, they partnered with a local organization, Arizona Helping Hands, to pack 70 birthday bags complete with cake mix, cake pan, frosting, candles, and balloons—a birthday party in a bag! These bags will go to families in need of resources to help celebrate their kids’ birthdays.

PRO-LIFE EVENT GIVES OPPORTUNITY FOR OHIO TROOP TO SHINE

American Heritage Girls bear the image and heart of God the Father, who deeply cares about the sacred nature of life. At this year’s Cross the Bridge for Life event on June 5, 2022, OH3712 organized the opening Flag Ceremony in addition to marching in the event. The Flag Ceremony is something AHG Troops practice at their weekly meetings. This training gives Girl Members a unique opportunity to serve confidently and reverently when events arise, including a Flag Ceremony. This Ohio Troop has led the Flag Ceremony for this event for many years, and this time was no different. As a very Pro-Life minded Troop, they often serve pregnancy resource centers and other initiatives. Elena McSwane, the Troop Coordinator said, “The girls felt proud to be a part of an event with an important message that the world needs to hear and that they were glad to help fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, the unborn.”

INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING AND FRIENDSHIP

GIRL LEADERSHIP EVENT IN D.C. METRO AREA SERVES 64 AHG GIRLS

The D.C. Metro Area Team celebrated their 3rd Annual Arise! PI/PA Leadership Training Day on June 18, 2022. Sixty-four girls from nineteen Troops representing D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia gathered at Manassas Baptist Church to learn how to be leaders rooted in Christ. The name Arise! came from Isaiah 10:1: “Arise, SHINE, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.” Led by Carrie Kilareski, Area Leadership Development Coordinator, the event utilized the G.R.I.T. with Grace Curriculum “Everyone Can Lead” and “Identity in Christ” to guide girls through the foundations of leadership as a Godly woman of integrity. These young women will be the next generation of Christian leaders!

AHG CAMP HONES SKILLS AND FUELS SOULS IN FLORIDA

Where is one place Girl Members can work on 5-10 skills in one day? Why, AHG Camp of course! Harley, of FL0529, had the time of her life at Camp Deep Waters this year experiencing Outdoor Skills, Swimming, Needle Arts, Marine Biology, Textile Arts, World Languages, and Entrepreneurship—that was all before the sun went down each day! In addition, Harley took the initiative to sign up for the Mail Coordinators team, sorting and delivering mail each day at lunch. Harley’s time in Bible study and devotional sessions taught her that she is Created, Protected, Resilient, Loved, and Rescued by God. AHG Camp provided food for her soul and tools for her skills. Finally, Harley wrote a piece about her splendid time at Camp Deep Waters for a local newspaper to share her experience with the world.

SHINE on, Harley!

PEN PAL PROGRAM GIVES OPPORTUNITY FOR TRAVEL AND LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS

The AHG Pen Pal Program gives girls a unique opportunity to meet Girl Members across the nation, learn about their personalities, talents, and goals, and–in some instances–a chance to meet after learning so much about each other. Four Girl Members found themselves in that exact scenario two years ago. Tenderheart and Pathfinder sisters from CA4112 embarked on an adventure to Texas and Illinois to meet their Pen Pal friends for the first time. This 8,000-mile round-trip journey allowed them to see beautiful regions of our nation’s landscape and to share giggles and fun with the two Pen Pals they had come to admire. Not all stories have this “to be continued” open ending, but this lovely one does!

BADGESTORIES

LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE

The goal of every AHG Troop is to provide girls with a balanced program, which progresses with the girl—increasing in challenge and skill as she grows in maturity and knowledge. Building on skills they’ve learned during their years

in previous Program Levels, girls can earn badges multiple times by working on them again at various ages. This balanced programming model provides an opportunity for a deeper understanding of valuable life skills. The AHG Program

TEXTILE ARTS BADGE

offers girls 93 different badge options in six Frontiers of skill—Heritage, Family Living, Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal WellBeing, and Science & Technology.

Art is found in many places and can be made out of a variety of materials. Textile arts can be made of plant, animal, or synthetic fibers, and constructed for practical or decorative use. Be creative and have fun turning fabric or fibers into a work of art while exploring this badge!

AHG Badges inspire girls in a variety of avenues, both for practical use and for artistic enjoyment. Badge work also provides a lovely bridge bringing past skills into the new era. For Raegan of VA1027, learning the Textile Arts Badge at AHG Camp gave a connection to an old-style skill and a way to connect with her grandmother, a volunteer in her AHG Troop. The craft of flour paste batik involves dyeing fabric via the resist method but substituting flour paste for the traditional wax medium. Raegan, now a Pioneer, said her favorite part of the process was “to scrape off the dry paste with a butter knife, exposing a white, clean line.” Raegan also made a small butterfly weave (given to a nursing home resident as a service project), a washer macramé bracelet, a quilt design, and stenciling. She gained many new skills during this badge work process!

HOME CARE AND REPAIR BADGE

Whether or not you enjoy taking things apart to see how they work, learning how to do minor repairs or maintenance in your home is a valuable skill. Learning how to properly use tools, along with a willingness to try different things, will lead to knowledge, independence, a feeling of accomplishment, and can lead to cost savings. Throughout this badge, girls work under adult supervision.

Girl Members can learn self-sufficiency skills through a variety of badges, but the Home Care and Repair Badge uniquely focuses their newly learned skills on the home environment. The Explorers of NC4673 seized the opportunity to construct their very own wooden step stools, a project they took home and utilized with their families. This takes AHG’s Creed Word Helpful to a whole new level! These Explorer girls possess the skills to operate basic hand tools as well as safety knowledge to keep the process free of unnecessary risk and disaster. Their parents gained competent and confident young ladies in the process of earning this badge. Keep up the good work, girls!

GEOLOGY BADGE

“Geo” means “Earth” and “ology” means the study of, so “Geology” means, literally, the study of Earth. Geologists study rocks, minerals, fossils, and so much more. They use their skills to understand the structure of the Earth, its history, and the many changes it undergoes.

AHG Badges afford girls unique opportunities to learn new skills and discover advanced knowledge about God’s creation. The VA0428 Troop made the most of their Geology Badge work with a visit to Westmoreland State Park. The park, known for its popularity among fossil hunters, boasts the opportunity to collect ancient shark teeth. Scarlett, a Tenderheart, recounted her experience in wonder and amazement. “I did not know that rocks had fossils in them. I saw a whalebone, a megalodon tooth, and dolphin vertebrae [that] the park rangers found on the beach. I did not know that shark teeth could be so big!” Sarah, a Patriot, shared that the highlight of the experience was “being with my friends for a day at the river, hiking and being away from electronics.” Abby, an Explorer, was surprised that she “found a jellyfish!” The Geology Badge experience is one these girls will never forget!

CHARTER ORGANIZATIONSPOTLIGHT

TRINITY GRACE CHURCH AR1024

ROGERS, ARKANSAS

This issue, AHG is excited to shine a light on Trinity Grace Church in Rogers, AR, home to AR1024. Charter Representative Brandon Van Marel reflects on chartering an AHG Troop at their church and the significant impact AHG has had on their faith community.

ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPACTFUL FORCE IN THE WELL-BEING OF AN AHG TROOP IS THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION

. Every Troop is owned by a Charter Organization, which is typically a church, school, or similarly-aligned Christian organization. Without the support of their Charter Organization, an AHG Troop would not exist. When the Charter Organization and Charter Representative are involved beyond simply providing meeting space, the AHG Ministry can have an incredible impact on the outreach of the organization.

Charter Organizations serve a crucial role in the AHG Ministry, as they own and operate AHG Troops. Though volunteers implement the AHG Program, the Charter Organization is able to customize their AHG Troop to best accomplish their ministry goals.

14 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS
Brandon Van Marel

WHY DID YOUR CHURCH DECIDE TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

We really saw a need and desire among our families to provide a ministry that would come alongside them to train up their daughters with a Biblical view of womanhood, teach them in a wide range of areas, and help them see how it all connects back to Christ.

HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR CHURCH HAD AN AHG TROOP?

We are just beginning our second year.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GROWTH IN YOUR YOUTH/FAMILY/WOMEN’S MINISTRY PROGRAMMING SINCE CHARTERING AN AHG TROOP?

We have seen growth within our church in regard to Titus 2 type ministry [opportunities]. We have seen some of the older women reaching out and sharing their knowledge and gifts with the Troop and really connecting three generations in some fun ways. We’ve also seen some growth in people volunteering in different areas of the church who are part of the Troop. The girls themselves have also grown in their leadership skills, confidence in themselves, and service to others. We are looking forward to all the ways we will continue to see growth as the Troop ministry continues.

HOW ELSE HAS AHG AFFECTED YOUR ORGANIZATION’S MINISTRY EFFORTS?

We have had several families begin attending Trinity Grace regularly that came directly through our AHG Troop. We also are starting a Trail Life Troop this year to offer a similar type of ministry for the young men/boys in our church and community.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER POTENTIAL CHARTER ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

The best advice I have for someone thinking of starting a charter is first, to pray that God is directing [the effort]. Second, for God to provide reliable helpers, which He will. Both last year and again this year we have seen the Lord provide just the right people for our Troop! Third, to realize the benefits of building up Godly young ladies to love God and honor Him with their lives. As with many things, it can easily seem like something that is too hard, or takes too much time/resources, or to think someone else will do it. I’d challenge you [to] step out of your comfort zone because there is a great need out there and the fruit of it far surpasses the time, energy, and resources to get it going. Take your first year one step at a time leaning on the Troop Coach. Remember that God will direct your steps and provide in ways you wouldn’t have thought of and know that the girls and their families will be blessed by this ministry!

FINDING UNITY AND GODLINESS IN OUR AMERICAN PATRIOTISM

“One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Words written almost 130 years ago.

Did you know that the words “under God” were not written into the Pledge of Allegiance until 1954, when President Eisenhower signed a bill passed by Congress?

Oftentimes it can feel like our modern American culture holds no space for God. But upon inspection, He is still at work in this country. He placed each of us in this time and place for a purpose—we, by no accident, are Christians and Americans.

16 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

With that unique identity comes great blessings and great responsibility. We live in a broken world—one where freedoms of education, expression, and worship are not guaranteed. One need only turn on the news to see the injustice and despair around the world. But in this nation, at this time in history, we are granted these freedoms, among so many others—true blessings from God. Because of these freedoms, we are proud to be Americans. But what if we reimagined how we show our patriotism, going beyond the firecrackers, barbecues, and matching Americana family t-shirts? What if together we could define our patriotism as a way to honor God, multiply the blessings He gave us as Americans, and seek freedom in Christ for all? American Heritage Girls is coming alongside parents to raise up a generation who honor their God, family, country, and community—not exclusive from one another, but in a holistic, reverent, and impactful way.

PATRIOTISM TODAY

In a time where love and loyalty to one’s country carries with it much complexity, how does today’s American Heritage Girl understand her place as a Godly citizen of this nation? Is she happy to give the Pledge of Allegiance? Is she apprehensive about singing patriotic songs? Today’s girls have a unique perspective on America—one that is less blindly exceptional and more aware of its historic and current flaws.

Our country was founded by men and women with great trust in God. Leaving home for a new land full of promise, America became a place of opportunity for all. Teaching our girls patriotism goes far beyond memorizing the Pledge or waving small flags at holiday parades. It means knowing our history and learning from it. Our American history is a human history—one full of success and strife, triumphs and mistakes, courageous love and tremendous cruelty. To love our great nation is to know its history, believe in its goodness, and pray for its future.

It is common for today’s girls to wrestle with her citizenship alongside her identity as a Christ-follower. Guide your girl well by talking about our history—all of it. Help her to see God’s sovereign hand protecting and leading those who worship Him. Lead her to serve those who have sacrificed for our freedom. Affirm her love for both God and Country, praying “God bless America!” along the way.

CITIZENSHIP & DISCIPLESHIP

Can patriotism and discipleship coexist? The simple answer is yes. The complex answer? We must have a healthy understanding and prioritization of both. We are first citizens of heaven, called to be Christ’s disciples on earth, but we are also citizens of our nation. Both come with a duty to our fellow man.

Citizenship is one of AHG’s Program Emphases, a spoke in the program wheel that is hinges on Christ. The AHG Program provides girls with a deeper understanding of their country and heritage. Girls cultivate honor for their country by participating in patriotic events, flag ceremonies, serving in their community, and through heritage-focused badge work, like the Dawn of Our Country Badge, Freedom Seekers Badge, or Our Constitution Badge. Serving others and being active citizens with their Troop fosters a lifelong love for their country. The ultimate outcome of this Program Emphasis is an honoring girl who cares for her community as an active citizen through service and patriotism. Consider how you and your daughter might honor the stars and stripes and God by serving her fellow neighbor—bring patriotic cookies to a food bank, adopt the family of a deployed military serviceperson to provide a weekly meal, or perhaps you can gift a

Barna reports: The percentage of people whose beliefs qualify them for a Biblical worldview declines in each successively younger generation:

new flag to a veteran in your neighborhood. As a Troop, seek out ways through your local American Legion, VA hospital, or United Service Organization (USO) Club to give back on a larger scale to those who sacrifice on behalf of our nation and its freedoms.

FINDING UNITY AMID DIVISION

The girls of Generation Z, and now Generation Alpha right behind them, are growing up in a post-Christian America—that is, an America where church attendance, religious affiliation, belief in God, prayer, and Bible reading have dropped out of the cultural norm. The population of Americans with a Biblical worldview is smaller than ever before. Barna reports: “The percentage of people whose beliefs qualify them for a Biblical worldview declines in each successively younger generation: 10 percent of Boomers, 7 percent of Gen X and 6 percent of Millennials have a Biblical worldview, compared to only 4 percent of Gen Z.” Recent data collected by The American Bible Society says that nearly 26 million Americans reduced or stopped interacting with the Bible within the past year.1

million Americans

A FOCUS ON TOMORROW, TODAY

Today’s young Americans are reckoning our past but remain hopeful for our future. This generation of change-makers is set on righting the injustices they see in our world. From the debt crisis to environmental protections, today’s youth know how to answer a rally cry. So why should the Gospel’s strongest call to action, the Great Commission, our Christian “rally cry”, be any different? “Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Mathew 28:19-20, NIV).

1

One could examine these numbers with dread, or we could analyze them as fertile ground for discipleship. Instead of waiting for the country to course-correct, we are called to be God’s hands and feet here on earth. Christ has no body on earth but us—the Church body. That unifying identity as Christians bands together His people despite our ages, ethnicities, socio-economic status, or political belief. His sacrifice unifies us. His Scriptures are life giving. Psalm 119 calls His Word a light to our feet—it corrects us and directs us.

Research shows that Gen Z are open to the ideas of faith, despite largely being raised without it.2 By providing Christcentered youth programming, AHG gives girls, both churched and unchurched, a place to see God at work in our world. From scientific discoveries to the creation of artistic masterpieces, from the sacrifice of service men and women to the activism for change on the home front, we see God woven through all of humanity. Together we can show girls that paving the way for the future includes a plan for salvation—one found only through Jesus. How fortunate we are to live in a nation where we trust in God and are free to share His goodness with others.

The freedom of worship is at the crux of what it means to be American. Consider praying this prayer, written for girls during AHG’s Free to Honor Event, at your next family dinner or Troop gathering. Together we celebrate our citizenship in heaven and in the United States of America:

“Heavenly Father,

thank you for allowing me to live in a country where I can freely worship you and live my life according to your Word. Lord, I trust that your plans and your timing are perfect. I trust that you have me in this exact place at this point in history for a purpose. Show me how you want me to share your truth and the freedom of your salvation with others. Thank you for allowing me to positively impact my community for you through my words and actions. Please bless the leaders of my community and my country and give them ears to hear Godly counsel and hearts to act on it. I ask this in your name, Jesus, Amen.”

MEET KENNA HARTIAN

Courage, honor, initiative, collaborator, entrepreneur—all these describe Kenna Hartian, the woman who shines so well on behalf of American Heritage Girls.

Since 1995, the Mission of American Heritage Girls has been to build women of integrity. While the AHG Program targets those in girlhood, the sincerity and faith-filled spirit that is nurtured and grown through AHG continues as girls develop and mature into women.

Kenna, an AHG Alumna hailing from IL3130, began as an Explorer when her younger sisters sparked her interest with delightful stories that she could not resist. This determined nature propels Kenna into whatever new journey comes her way, be it jumping into her AHG Troop feet first, completing the Cinematography Badge as a Pioneer, or developing a podcast with four of her closest

friends. God is honoring her natural wiring recently—you see, He placed her in a key position with the Illinois Family Institute as a Godly young voice offering a Biblical perspective on issues facing Christians in this cultural moment. Kenna embodies a major goal of AHG—she has become a strong woman of integrity who actively shines Christ’s light into a dark world.

Kenna joined AHG as a sixth grader and enjoyed three of the five Program Levels of participation with her Troop during her time in AHG. Some of her favorite memories were the Troop camping trips, including an archery challenge with her friends. “Whoever shot their arrows the quickest and most accurate won,” Kenna reminisces. Hartian refined her creative skills through various AHG Badges like the Cinematography Badge. She shares, “The Pi/Pa’s met up at my house to film our version of The Princess and The Pea…” The girls included the pea as an actual character and sprinkled plenty of Princess Bride and Lord of the Rings references in for fun. The Troop leaders were so impressed by the final project that they surprised the girls by including their short film at the Court of Awards held at the end of their Program Year. Kenna is thankful for the practical skills she gained through AHG badge work. In fact, she says, “I still carry around the First Aid

Kit from the Emergency Preparedness Badge.” Kenna feels the Our Flag, Dawn of Our Country, and Citizenship Badges gave her a solid understanding of the United States’ heritage and structure, which inform much of her advocacy conversations now.

Kenna achieved AHG’s highest award, the Stars & Stripes Award. This project requires Girl Members to employ all of their leadership, organizational, communication, and planning skills to complete a major service project. Stars & Stripes Award Projects typically involve over 100 hours of service. Kenna’s project benefitted an organization called Aid for Women, a pregnancy and young mother care center. With a heart for the “Pro-Life Ministry,” as she refers to the movement, Kenna deeply desired to help in practical ways through her Stars & Stripes Award project process. Her project could have come to a screeching halt in the summer of 2020 with pandemic-related difficulties, but she saw God’s sovereign faithfulness in every area of keeping the project on track, including raising $5,000 in seventeen days for project supplies.

Behind every upstanding Girl Member is a firm family foundation. Kenna’s father, a small business owner and an active part in her discipleship journey, now also employs Kenna as a bookkeeper. Kenna is one of four kids and knows well the value of a strong family relationship in the home. While the Hartians are a homeschooling family, AHG also served as another layer of strengthening their family, with IL3130 coming alongside Kenna’s parents to shepherd Kenna and her sisters.

Going out into the world can be a daunting season for a young woman. Kenna describes the transition as feeling dumped into an ocean of uncertainty. “What helped me the most was the realization that God already knew what decision I would make about my life. He had a plan and a purpose for me, and because He is good, they would be good. So, if I trusted Him and just took the next step,

He would lead me somewhere, and He has.” Not only has Kenna navigated the transition post-high school with grace, she exudes confidence securely rooted in her Savior. Kenna wisely advises AHG Patriots to “develop a habit of staying daily connected to the Word, because it really does sanctify you. It will keep you close to God during that transition season.”

Patti Garibay, AHG’s Founder and Executive Director, often reminds girls that what matters most is not who she is but Whose she is, referring to a securely rooted identity in Christ. It is through this lens that Kenna Hartian now influences her world. Kenna has a blog called Good Clean Reads, offering book reviews from a Christian perspective for families and individuals. “I read and review books to help Christians find good, God-honoring stories which embody and instill Biblical values in the readers’ minds.” She writes, directs, and produces videos under the moniker “Kenna Rose” for the Illinois Family Institute on key social and political issues in her state. Kenna is also one of five women who host a regular podcast, Self-Evident, for the Illinois Family Action group. In each of these three avenues, Kenna practices her faith by giving a voice to young Christian women in the United States on social and political issues.

God has orchestrated a path for Kenna through her family, AHG, and her future with blossoming hope. As a woman who is wise beyond her years, Kenna offers these words of encouragement to anyone in need of the Lord’s guidance: “If your circumstances are unsure and unsteady, we follow a God who is sure and who is steady. He will keep the promises He gives in His Word. He knows the path, purpose, and plan He has for your life, and since He is faithful and good, it’s good—no matter how hard it seems.”

AHG Alumnae often report back on how much the AHG Program has benefitted their lives. These young women are making a remarkable difference in the world around them. AHG is looking to connect with its alumnae and create some exciting opportunities for them to reconnect with old friends and learn how they can share their leadership abilities!

IDENTIFY HOW GOD IS WORKING IN YOUR LIFE:

“I know that God has prepared me to be a servant to others by putting me into American Heritage Girls. I have had countless opportunities for community service that I would not have had otherwise. God has been working in my life and shaping my heart for mission work long before I ever considered being a missionary. It’s awesome to see how God calls and prepares us for something we’re not even considering.”

NOW THAT THE PROCESS IS DONE, HOW DID YOU SEE GOD GROW YOUR HEART FOR VETERANS THROUGH YOUR STARS & STRIPES AWARD PROJECT?

“Through this Stars & Stripes [Award] Project, God grew my heart for veterans by showing me how much veterans need our help. When veterans come back from deployment or when they retire, they are mostly thanked but not helped in the ways they need. Most veterans need more physical and mental health resources than they are provided. God has shown me that humble things like showing simple kindness such as sitting and talking with our veterans, or bigger things like providing them with like-minded communities would help immensely.”

“I feel this project fits perfectly into the AHG Mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country. As an organization that provides aid to veterans, this project provides a direct service to my country, the military community in my area, and my military family, all to bringing glory to God.”

volunteers were thrilled with the project. They can set up very fast and have everything ready to go for events. They are also able to pack up promptly and without any issues. Everything has a place and it helps the volunteers be less stressed at the events knowing where everything is and what they have in stock.”

Every four years, AHG hosts an Adult Leadership Conference known as AHGinspire. This year’s location on June 9-11 brought everyone home to Cincinnati, Ohio—the birthplace and headquarters of the AHG, Inc. Office. In a time when many found themselves aching to connect, the time together did not disappoint. Springdale Nazarene Church hosted the event where hundreds of attendees came together from 33 states representing 113 Troops. From Washington to Florida, Michigan to Texas—and everywhere in between— dedicated volunteers and families made the journey to gather for two and a half days of keynote speakers, workshops, entertainment, connection with one another, laughter, and fun!

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

JUNE, 2022:

A TIME TO EQUIP AND REFRESH AHG VOLUNTEERS ACROSS THE NATION

Participants had an opportunity to choose workshops focused specifically on AHG and Troop Life issues. Attendees had the chance to develop skills to maximize their Troop’s efforts through effective vision-casting practices with AHG Training Specialist Meredith Briski and LeeAnn Russell, an Area Shepherd and Troop Shepherd and PI/PA Unit Leader with TX0407

Abby Riley, AHG Director of Curriculum Development, and Jennie Ferguson, AHG Curriculum Development Specialist, unveiled the new Program Year theme: SHINE! and shared beautiful resources for Troops to use throughout the coming year. Volunteers learned about making their Troops more accessible and friendly to differently-abled girls through Luke5Adventures Founder and President

Kevin Whitney’s and Vice President Whitney Blackston’s information.

Many workshops focused on core issues surrounding raising Godly children into the next generation. Sarah Stonestreet, of the Strong Women Podcast, focused on hope amid today’s confusing cultural moment for our children. John Stemberger, of the Florida Family Policy Council and Trail Life USA National Board Member, offered strategies to manage media, smartphones, video games, and screen time with kids.

Refreshed and Equipped Leaders

AHGinspire attendee, Wendylea Wyandt of OH0333, shared, “I attended the event with the expectation of learning how to be a better leader and bring ideas back to our Troop. The conference was so much

more! I loved that the focus wasn’t [only] on AHG, but on how to lead and protect children in general. I left truly feeling inspired and better equipped to be a counter-culture mom and leader.”

Cheryl Porter of OR0001 recalls, “My vision has been too small. Weekly meetings, badges, and activities. Fighting a spiritual battle for our young people is the real theater of combat...This summer I will be contemplating how to raise my gaze!” As the highlights show, the information was worth its weight in gold.

Laughter Unlocks Tired Hearts

Christian Comedian Mike Goodwin brought the laughter home Friday night as the doors opened to public ticketholders joining the conference attendees. This unique opportunity allowed the public to learn about the AHG Program. Cincinnatiarea Christian radio station WAKW Star 93.3 kept the parking lot buzzing with their mobile van and DJs. The evening poured out praise and music to the Lord through the Springdale Nazarene Church Worship Band. Emcee Katy Bunn, an AHG Alumna, introduced Mike Goodwin to the crowd. Mike has a unique blend of family-friendly comedy and has appeared on Daystar network, TBN, and Dry Bar Comedy. His humor left the crowd laughing until their sides hurt, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Conference attendees found a healthy balance of gentle challenge and joyful encouragement through each of these keynotes.

Many Helping Hands

Since AHG holds service close to the heart of the organization, AHGinspire attendees were able to participate in a project to benefit Matthew 25 Ministries. Alumna and Founding AHG Girl Member Emily Rosen of OH2513 organized the project to collect first aid supplies for donation to the ministry which provides nutritional food, clean water, and clothing to those in need. Additionally, a wealth of volunteers gave generously of their time to make the conference’s logistics happen. For this, the organization is deeply grateful!

Honoring Our Best

The final day of the conference recognized and featured the AHG National Awards Recipients. AHG was pleased to recognize the American Family Association with the Community Partner Award, Sherry Ohotnicky with the Mustard Seed Award, Christy Cameron with the Molly Pitcher Award, Anne Lombard with the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award, Laurie Wraase with the Tenderheart Unit Leader of the Year Award, Melody Wyatt with the Pioneer Unit Leader of the Year Award, Nicole Traicoff with the Outstanding Alumna Award, and Jonell Baker with the Founder’s Award. JoNell’s daughter received the award on her behalf. as JoNell joined her Savior on May 13, 2022. Her legacy will live on within the hearts of Girl Members.

Connecting With Resources

and AHG’s

Partners

Conference attendees enjoyed connecting with AHG’s partners in the Exhibit Hall. Fiftyfive exhibitors were on hand to share resources and information with attendees. This was the place to find the AHGstore, Preferred Fundraising Vendors, High Adventure Providers, and like-minded companies. Additionally, generous sponsors like Operation Christmas Child, HybridLight®, Driven Coffee, and Penn Emblem partnered with AHG to make the conference happen. A generous anonymous donation even helped facilitate video recordings of live speeches and some workshops. This content is now available in the form of an AHGinspire Digital Access Pass. AHG volunteers, parents, and ministry partners now have access to the same great content from the conference*.

Working in Diligence Until We Meet Again

AHGinspire will be back again in four years. In the interim, the AHG community will continue the diligent work of equipping leaders and coming alongside parents in raising Godly women of integrity through faith, service, and fun. We look forward to meeting again soon!

SHAPING THE HEARTS OF FUTURE SERVANT LEADERS

Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has delivered more than 198 million Operation Christmas Child (OCC) shoeboxes to children in over 170 countries and territories. American

Heritage Girls has partnered with OCC for the past ten years on this important initiative.

26 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Additionally, OCC has been a long-time sponsor of various AHG events and program initiatives. The AHG Ministry is truly blessed by their generosity.

Thanks to the joyful support of American Heritage Girls Troops across the country, thousands more children will be blessed with good news and great joy this holiday season through the gift of a simple shoebox.

DID YOU KNOW?

Every American Heritage Girl is invited to change a child’s life through OCC.

This year AHG is incorporating the 20222023 Program Year Theme: SHINE! into the campaign–#AHGOCCSHINE. Troops are encouraged to pack a minimum of 25 shoeboxes. With nearly 1,200 Troops, AHG is looking to spread the gospel to 30,000 children this year!

OCC creates a special commemorative patch for American Heritage Girls each year!

The first time a girl packs a shoebox, she affixes the OCC logo patch to her vest or sash. Every year after that, she can order a commemorative patch to recognize the Troop’s shoebox packing efforts. Patches can be ordered on the OCCAHG landing page here, samaritanspurse.org/operationchristmas-child/americanheritage-girls-operationchristmas-child

“The altruistic act of kindness in building and sending a shoebox molds the hearts of our future servant leaders while building empathy for their international sisters and brothers. I can’t think of a better way for kids to share the love of Christ while praying for the impact of their gift from generation to generation.”

AHG Troops who pack 100+ shoeboxes are entered into a drawing for a memorable trip to the OCC fulfillment center for a Girl Member and Adult Member/Guardian with AHG Founder and Executive Director Patti Garibay.

The winning Troop selects the girl participant who will experience tours of Samaritan’s Purse/OCC shoebox fulfillment center and the Billy Graham Museum in addition to some special surprises in the summer of 2023! The winner will bring back a commemorative gift to share with their Troop members. AHG will feature the winning Troop and OCC trip in an upcoming issue of Heritage Headlines. Troops can submit their shoebox count at this link, https://ahg.pub/OCCshoeboxcount22

National Collection Week is November 14-21, 2022

There are nearly 5,000 drop-off locations across the United States where you can deliver your shoebox. (Don’t forget to place a rubber band around each shoebox to keep all your precious goodies inside!)

Packing your shoebox is just the start!

Be sure to cover ministry costs associated with each shoebox through a small donation. By including this donation, you’re covering the shipping and handling costs associated with getting a box to a child in need so OCC can spread the joy of the gospel across the globe. Plus, if you give online, you can “Track Your Box” and see its journey to the recipient!

Most importantly, “pray without ceasing”

(1Thessalonians 5:17, NKJV) for the child who receives a shoebox gift. AHG encourages Troops to pray for the family to be receptive to the Good News of Jesus Christ, to pray for the pastor of the church who delivers their shoebox gift, and prayers that the gospel will transform the recipient community.

HIGHIMPACT INSIGHT

Margaret Ranalli began her journey with American Heritage Girls in 2014 as an Assistant Explorer Unit Leader in TX2407. She is a founding member and past Troop Coordinator and Charter Representative of TX1988. She is currently the San Antonio Area Coordinator. Margaret is a United States Air Force veteran, she served from 1986-2002. The AHG Oath states the importance of God, family, community, and country. As believers, we seek to grow in virtue, be obedient to God’s commands and strive to be reflections of God’s love in our homes and in the wider community. Godly patriotism reflects this blending of obedience, honor, and community for all. Merriam-Webster defines patriotism as “love for or devotion to one’s country.” This love of country is not in opposition to the love and honor due to God. In discussing the duties and obligations due to our country, Saint Thomas Aquinas points out that the obligation and love for our country has a strong connection to our love of God. He states, “Man is debtor chiefly to his parents and his country, after God…”

It is an honorable endeavor to revere one’s country through serving our fellow citizens and those who also respect our country.

Patriotism reflects a commitment to virtue, obedience to a higher authority, and love and respect for our fellow citizens.

Patriotism is reflected in respecting and obeying the law, showing reverence and respect for our flag, supporting, and recognizing the sacrifices of those who serve to achieve our common good such as our first responders and military members, and learning about our history and understanding the basis for our government as outlined in the U.S. Constitution. We are blessed that the AHG Program allows many opportunities to instill the virtue of Godly patriotism in our young women.

Central to every AHG meeting is the Opening Flag Ceremony, which includes honoring our flag and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Participation in Flag Ceremonies should be encouraged for girls in all Program Levels. In the beginning of

the year, PI/PAs and Explorers can perform the ceremony and, as the year goes on, the Troop should encourage Tenderhearts and Pathfinders to be members of the color guard. Additionally, finding opportunities to hold “special” Flag Ceremonies that include an outdoor ceremony/retreat or a Flag Folding Ceremony wherein the meaning of the thirteen folds of the flag is presented. This is a meaningful experience for all our members. The Our Flag Badge is often one of the first badges completed as part of the AHG Joining Award. Troops can also consider the Our Constitution Badge, perhaps beginning with a celebration on Constitution Day, September 17.

Recognizing and supporting activeduty military and veterans is another great opportunity to promote patriotism and service.

Christmas cards sent to deployed troops, collecting items for “care packages” or supporting programs for families of military members are worthwhile projects. I remember our unit getting Valentine’s cards from a school group while deployed. Even the toughest of the group was touched and felt the love of our nation and our God. Participating in a program such as Wreaths Across America or volunteering to place flags in a cemetery for Veterans or Memorial Day recognizes the sacrifice of our fallen. Participation in parades or color guards for civil events can also instill the importance of honoring our country. Most importantly, we as leaders, can model love of country, respect for our flag and support of our military and leaders. We must strive to link virtue and Godliness to good citizenship. Women of integrity are no doubt good and virtuous citizens.

The AHGstore closes each spring in order to complete an annual inventory. This year brought some exciting changes that took the store off-line for an extended period. In the closed months, the AHGstore fulfillment center moved from Arkansas to the AHG, Inc. Office in Cincinnati, Ohio. Moving the AHGstore back “home” additionally allowed AHG to partner with Think Fulfillment, a local, familyowned company that will handle fulfilling all AHG orders. Think Fulfillment holds a longstanding, loyal relationship with AHG and employs team members who pray over each carefully packed order prior to its shipping date.

From March to July, the AHG, Inc. Office transformed, making space for the new fulfillment center, a podcast and video studio, a reorganized, user-friendly shipping and mailing space, and drop-in meeting and work spaces were created for local staff to use.

AHG is thrilled to bring merchandise back home to Cincinnati in a large and beautiful space and looks forward to serving your Troop and gift merchandise needs.

Jeanette Alford Troop Development Coach Jessica Morgan Regional Manager Kim Lingan Controller Jill Rowell Troop Coach West Trista Zimmerman Retail Tax Accounting Specialist Rebecka Aschenbrenner Customer Service Representative

I am a veteran of the United States Armed Forces who watches cultural trends, and a believer in Christ who cares deeply about those around me. Like many of those who read these words, I am often concerned about our nation, its youth, and the direction our national culture is going. My concern is influenced by my “dual citizenship”: as a believer in Christ, I am a dual citizen of heaven (Ephesians 2:18-20) and an adopted member of the family of the saints (Ephesians 1:5).

Sometimes the fallout of contemporary culture unexpectedly lands very close to home. Last Thanksgiving, a dinner guest who had just recently graduated from a well-known, conservative Christian University commented that “Thanksgiving is just a celebration of genocide.” Since I am descended from refugees of religious persecution, our national Thanksgiving holiday holds many layers of profound meaning. Our guest had absorbed one of the many distortions about our American history and heritage that is frequently spread through the media and schools. Our daughters are exposed to these

STAFFSCOOP

same ideas as they are forming their understanding of our national heritage.

As volunteer members of AHG, we each have an opportunity to SHINE the light of truth in matters of both loving God and honoring our country.

The environment we live in demands that as parents and leaders, we are prepared to respond to these cultural influences. As leaders in AHG, we can and should honor the amazing history of our nation and respect the continuing sacrifices of its veterans. That said, particularly for our Patriot level girls, many of whom will be asking thoughtful questions as they prepare for a college environment, it is incumbent on all of us to be historically informed and intellectually honest about both the good and bad of our national history, and how we understand that history as followers of Christ. In that context, I believe we should also acknowledge and communicate forthrightly the heartbreaking effects and legacy of racism and slavery in our nation. Looking to the future, the AHG Board of Trustees is developing a Statement of Biblically-Based Christian Worldview, which will serve as a platform to focus planning, curriculum, and training on AHG’s core mission.

Finally, in his recent book Live Not by Lies, Rod Dreher highlights both the autocratic rule of former communist states and the current “soft tyranny” of social media, technology, business, and academia, putting very real pressure on each citizen to conform to evolving antiBiblical cultural norms. He highlights small groups of critical importance in speaking our heritage story and providing authentic personal relationships, both greatly sought after by the millennial generation. AHG is a balanced, comprehensive solution to this modern problem. AHG leaders are having a profound effect on our daughters’ understanding of both their national and their spiritual heritage, and they are truly “shining a light in the darkness.”

“Honor, justice, and humanity, forbid us tamely to surrender that freedom which we received from our gallant ancestors, and which our innocent posterity have a right to receive from us. We cannot endure the infamy and guilt of resigning succeeding generations to that wretchedness which inevitably awaits them if we basely entail hereditary bondage on them.”

—Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of the Causes and Necessities of Taking up Arms (1775)

How long have you been working at AHG? 6 months

What do you do in your position?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NKJV

I work in the Volunteer Services Department. My job is to mentor, encourage, equip, and support the Troop Coaches who work directly with AHG Troops and volunteers.

What’s your favorite part of working at AHG?

My favorite part of working at AHG is the ability to collaborate with such wonderful team members to help support and grow the AHG Ministry. I especially enjoy working with the Troop Coach Team to provide encouragement and to help equip them to serve AHG volunteers well.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop?

Before joining the AHG Staff, I was a volunteer in a Troop for four years and served as a Unit Leader and Troop Coordinator. My favorite part about being involved in a Troop was seeing the girls grow in their knowledge of who they are in Christ. It was such a blessing to see them learn new skills, grow spiritually, and participate in girl leadership. I enjoyed the privilege of serving with a team of dedicated volunteers who shared the same goal of raising Godly girls who become women of integrity.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I am thrilled to be part of the AHG Staff and look forward to providing exceptional support to AHG Troops nationwide.
