- Pouf BabyThe best inventors are the ones who needed or wanted something they just couldn’t find, and instead, decided to make it themselves That’s Chani Koplowitz of Ivee
Chani went shopping to find cute items for a mid-winter trip to Florida but was struggling to find things that were modest and decently priced The one dress she came home with was still too short so she had to add fabric to it afterward, feeling particularly frustrated
After that trip, because she knew how to sew, she took herself to a fabric store, made a pattern and made a similar already tzniut dress in 18 minutes She knew at the factory level, they could make this in less time and for less money and decided she was onto something.
To those on the outside, this may have seemed like a natural transition, as she has her own bridal company called Augenbraun’s Bridal where she designs all the gowns in the store. When she started out, she was also acting as the seamstress, doing all the alterations herself
Her flowy pieces and beautiful dresses and skirts give off a soft elegance The clothing has become a staple in so many wardrobes for both women and younger girls. The inspiration often starts with the fabric She keeps up with the trends while not being overly focused on them at the same time
The name actually came about because of the letters in it. Chani wanted there to be two “ e ” s in the word so she started brainstorming words that could work in that sense When she heard “ivy” she thought of Ivy League and liked what it reminded her of. While others may think of ivy, the vine, she’s also good with that as it’s beautiful, natural and organically grown
Her favorite part of working on Ivee is helping people feel good about themselves — in whatever size body they’re in Ivee’s standard sizing goes through 2x and the plus size pieces go through 5x. “Having size inclusivity and items that actually run true to size is very helpful,” Chani shares “We get amazing feedback from that, people are so thankful ”
Joining The ADDRESS has been so exciting for Chani “It’s been a really nice experience where everyone appreciates everyone’s successes, ” she says. “We cheer each other on, you don’t feel alone ”
When two girls became roommates in seminary, they never would have expected to meet both a best friend and business partner in one shot As it goes though, Hashem’s plans for us are often better than we could have imagined Shira Jaski and Tehila Bamshad were the girls everyone turned to in the dorm when it came to borrowing clothes to go out in, mostly their silk skirts For Shira, fashion was always something she loved and wanted to go into. Tehila however, has a degree in computer programming and business management and had no plans of making fashion more than a hobby Eventually, they just felt pushed in that direction Plus, Coronavirus hit It was a time when everyone seemed to be taking on new projects, so it felt like the perfect time to give this a try
So two years ago, the pair went out to lunch with a pen and paper and started drawing out their designs They came up with two different pieces at that meal — the Laya skirt and the Tara dress — which are actually two of their best sellers today “They’re such good basic pieces yet still make you look dressed and put together,” Shira says
They decided to call the company, By Tess If you’re wondering who Tess is, she’s the name they felt represented that cool girl you just want to borrow clothes from “By Tess stands for fun, good vibes, modest and trendy clothing at an affordable price point,” Shira explains.
In the beginning, Tehila and Shira had to work from the ground up to find the right factory, source fabrics and learn what they were doing. “The first few styles we made, we had to go through rounds of samples until we perfected it,” Tehila says
Now, things come more naturally and they’ve fallen into a rhythm Tehila deals with all of the back-of-house stuff — the website design, technical and computer stuff and Shira works more with photo shoots, partnerships and creative projects That being said, both of them work on the designs “We have a similar style but it’s also different, so we bounce ideas off each other and meet in the middle a lot,” Shira explains. Oftentimes, they’ll get inspiration from their day-to-day lives “We made a t-shirt swim dress that sold really well that I thought of one day I was at the pool and was just so hot but didn’t want a whole fancy modest swim dress,” Tehila shares “We like to look around and see something that we need but are lacking, or we’ll see a trend that is popular but isn’t modest and make it that way ”
Joining The Address has been so exciting for Tehila and Shira “We really feel like we’re part of a family, everyone is so nice,” Shira says. “There’s no competition, we’re just all on the same team ”
If you’ve ever stopped by The ADDRESS, you’ve most likely run into Sarah Siegel, the store’s bubbly, blonde and smart supervisor.
She has basically become the face of The ADDRESS — she’s a mainstay on the Instagram page and is constantly sharing her picks of the season both there and in this very magazine. The best thing they’ve learned is that our relationship with Judaism is between you and God and dressing is the same way, Sarah explains “Some people may come in in pants and others might be in long black skirts, it’s all individualized ”
She takes her role seriously and knows that especially in the time we’re in, with increasing antisemitism, she has the important job of representing Judaism to a whole team of people who will be bringing that back into the world. “Knowledge is power…I do my best to show them who we are as a nation and show us in a positive light. It’s fun for me as well.”
Sarah is open to being there for any customer who comes into the store, whether it’s looking for a certain style or just trying to find what might be best on them. “We’re really a one-stop shop. We have over 80 brands now…we just want to support each other and that’s what I’m here for ”
