Join in a 100 Year Celebration!

Join us for a great time in Sedalia, Missouri this June 23-26, 2014. We will be celebrating our 100 year anniversary of the Corriedale breed in the US! There will be special awards and special activities such as a BBQ at the fairgrounds, an adult showmanship class, dance with DJ and AJCA car wash.

We are asking every farm to make a display showcasing their flock’s history

with pictures from both the past and today so we can set up a display in the FFA building during the event. These do not have to be fancy displays – just get some posterboard and tell your story. Don’t be left out!

Bring any sale catalogues or memorabilia you might have to share with other Corriedale breeders as we reminisce at this event. See you there!

Official Notice Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet The 2014 Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet with the Election of Officers and National Corriedale Queen selection will be held on Wednesday, June 25 at 6 p.m. in Sedalia, Missouri at the Methodist Church across from the Best Western.

This provides the opportunity to enjoy an evening of fun with your many Corriedale friends. Following the meal there will be the presentation of the Guy L. Green Award and the Guthrie Award for the Outstanding Corriedale Breeder of the Year.

Banquet Reservations Make banquet reservations with Cindy DeOrnellis or email her DeOrnellisC@lincolnu.edu. The banquet is Wednesday, June 25 at 6 p.m. at the Methodist Church.

Annual Business Meeting In accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws of the American Corriedale Association, Inc., most items of business are transacted at the Past Presidents/State and Area Directors Meeting. This meeting is scheduled Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Farm Credit Building. American Junior Corriedale Association Meeting The 2014 Annual Meeting of the AJCA will be held during the National Show and Sale. This meeting will be held on Monday, June 23 following the show with new directors to be elected. The National Junior Show is at 9 a.m. Monday with Meghan Phillippi of Montana judging. This will be a great fun-filled week in Missouri!

Selden Whitmore Youth Achievement Award One of the highlights of the Annual Membership Meeting will be the presentation of the Selden Whitmore Youth Achievement Award to a deserving junior member under the age of 20.

The basis for this award is someone who has had outstanding participation in junior activities, as well as various accomplishments in school, 4-H, FFA, church and community. The application for this award is available on the website at www.americancorriedale.com or by calling the ACA office at (618) 676-1046. It is due

in the Association office by May 1, 2014 for consideration. The winner will receive a $150 monetary award, certificate and Corriedale note pad.

Outstanding Junior Shepherd Award This award will be presented during the Annual Meeting and will be judged on a junior member’s outstanding participation in AJCA activities, as well as accomplishments and the promotion of the Corriedale breed on the junior level.

There is no application form to fill out and the Executive Board, with the help of the AJCA advisors, will make this award selection with the individual’s commitment to Corriedales taken into consideration.

This is also based on the member’s conduct, presentation of their sheep, as well as their willingness to help other junior members.

Fun Auction Following the Annual Membership Meeting on June 25 the Annual Fun Auction will be conducted. This always proves to be great fun and the generosity of those who donate, as well as those who purchase items, are greatly appreciated!

Item donations are still needed for this event and can be sent to Ed and Cindy DeOrnellis, 301 Luzon Lane, Bonnots Mill, MO 65016 or brought with you to this fun filled evening. The proceeds of this event area to be divided equally between the ACA and the AJCA.

Scholarship Applications The 2014 American Corriedale Association Scholarship will be awarded on Wednesday, June 25 at the Annual Meeting.

This year’s scholarship will be for $600 with the AJCA donating $300 to the scholarship.

Applications must be into the Association office no later than May 1. The applicant’s high school and college transcripts must accompany their application. Application is available at www.americancorriedale.com.

President’s Note

Greetings from a cold Northwest Ohio! This morning it is 18 below zero. I realize for some of you western breeders that might not be cold for you but for this old Wayne Kemler OHIO boy it is cold! Winter just wants to hang on this year.

I hope lambing season is going well for everyone, and you are finding some champion lambs in this year’s crop.

Its been 100 years since Corriedales were first brought to the U.S. We are planning

some special activities in Sedalia this June.

The show will be Tuesday June 24 at 1 p.m., the sale is June 26 at 3 p.m. with the banquet June 25 at 6 p.m. If you can make the show and sale I think it will be worth your time.

As I write the notes I wonder how we, as breeders, are going to make another 100 years. A couple of my thoughts are, first, that the association runs on the money it receives for registrations, transfer and dues.

We need to register more!

My second thought is we, as breeders, need to become more accountable for the sheep we are raising. First, in the way they look. Not all Corriedales are big white face sheep. Second, is the tooth problem were having. If your sheep are having trouble keeping teeth as long as they are supposed to, remember these two dates – September 1 for fall lambs and January 1 for spring lambs. Get those dates in your lambing schedule and maybe that problem will go away. Just my thought.

Guy L. Green Award The highest honor bestowed upon a Corriedale breeder is the Guy L. Green Trophy. This traveling trophy is presented to an individual at the Annual Meeting each year. The new recipient is selected by the Executive Board and is someone that has served on various committees, held an office in the association and been very instrumental in promoting the Corriedale breed. Their success in breeding Corriedales over the years, their accomplishments and achievements, along with guidance and direction for the breed are very instrumental in the selection of the recipient. It is an honor for

longstanding dedication, devotion and contributions to the Corriedale breed.

Recognizing the need for recognition to Mr. Green for his devotion to the Corriedale breed for many years, a trophy was presented to him in 1972. It has been said that at one time every major breeder in Ohio either had used a Green ram or a closely related ram. His sheep were always noted for their fleeces. Guy L. Green made tremendous contributions to the improvement and promotion of Corriedales. It was decided to make this presentation at the annual meeting each year and present the previous recipient with a permanent engraved plaque.

In 2012, the silver tray that was used for this award had been filled with names so Lanny Crawford, Iowa Corriedale breeder donated a new silver tray for use in the upcoming years.

Guthrie Award Outstanding Breeder of the Year 1951-2013

The Guthrie Award for the Outstanding Corriedale Breeder of the Year began in 1951 when it was first presented to J.F. Walker, Gambier, Ohio. Senator J.F. Guthrie, a noted Corriedale breeder in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, donated this trophy to the Association. Many stud rams were imported from his flock to the United States in the early years.

The Guthrie trophy is given to a Corriedale breeder who has made major genetic contributions to the improvement and advancement of the Corriedale breed over at least the past three years. Show and sale results and participation in state and national activities are all considered in the evaluation of the nominees.

The following was presented by Senator Guthrie and the Guthrie Trophy Committee as a point system to use in making the award selection: 1. Number of flocks started – 20 points.

2. Advertising – 20 points.

3. Service to the Association and to the breed – 20 points.

4. Improvement accomplished for the breed – 40 points.

100th Celebration continues at KILE

By Roger and Nancy Bowman This year marks the 100 Year Anniversary of Corriedale sheep coming to the United States. As most of you already know, the King family of Wyoming imported these first Corriedales in 1914. To celebrate this momentous event, a number of special events are planned to take place at the National Corriedale Sale at Sedalia in June. Many are enthusiastically looking forward to this celebration.

The Pennsylvania Corriedale breeders are also planning a celebratory event for this year.

The Pennsylvania Corriedale Association is organizing a 100 Year Anniversary activity to take place at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition (KILE) this coming fall. KILE is one of the larger sheep shows in the eastern United States. The 100 year celebration will take place at the Farm Show Expo Center in Harrisburg, Penn. on Thursday, October 2.

During the day the Open Corriedale Sheep Show will take place, exhibiting some very good quality sheep. Later that

evening, an informal dinner catered by the Pennsylvania Livestock Association is being planned. A program is also planned for the evening. Part of that program will be the premiere of a YouTube presentation being made that will showcase many of the Corriedale sheep farms in Pennsylvania. After KILE is over, it might be possible to link this presentation to the American Corriedale Associationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website.

We would like to invite anyone interested in Corriedale sheep to come and help celebrate. KILE is an open sheep show, so some of you may want to enter sheep in the show. There is also a Junior Corriedale Show on Sunday, October 5.

On the other hand, you are welcome to just come and enjoy a Corriedale sheep show, have a nice meal, see a fine program, and enjoy meeting the Pennsylvania Corriedale families.

Peters inducted into OSF Hall of Fame

Bob Peters, a resident of Ansonia was one of seven people who were inducted into the Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame July 2013. This award was established in 1976 for the purpose of recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions toward making the Ohio State Fair one of America’s premier expositions.

The Ohio Governor selects the inductees in the Hall of Fame each year. Peters was presented with a plaque at the induction reception that honors him for his “outstanding loyalty to the Ohio State Fair.”

“It flabbergasted me,” Bob Peters said.

“When I saw who all have received the award, it humbled me.”

Peters has had 28 plus years as a sheep exhibitor/supporter. His sons, Scott and Jessie, got the ball rolling for his nomination by getting letters of recommendation from all over the country.

“I don’t know how I will uphold that. I have a little ornery side and someone will have to watch me. My whole family, but not all the grandkids, were there as were local supporters of the letters” Bob said of the impressive induction ceremony.

Bob shared that he was notified ahead of the award and he was to limit his acceptance speech to two to three minutes.

“I don’t like to talk in public and I was sick at my stomach,” he said. “But, I made it through. I don’t know what I said, but I did it.”

Bob has been exhibiting Corriedale sheep since 1973 and also other animals including horses, prior to that date.

“I help with the junior fair program in market lambs and breeding sheep,” he said, adding humbly, “I didn’t do any more than anybody else. It is quite an honor. We have had a lot of good times and a lot of bad times like everybody else.”

Bob has been a 4-H advisor for close to 35 years. Bob and Darrell Goodwin are cosecretaries of the sheep barn at the Darke County Fair.

“Darrell does all the computer work and I do all the groundwork,” Bob said. “We’ve The

His work at the Ohio State Fair starts prior to the opening date of the fair.

“I go early and weigh market lambs,” he said. “I’ve been breed classifier, tagged market lambs and am breed steward for the Corriedale breed and others.”

Bob, who farms and drives a bus for the Ansonia School District, said his family has been showing livestock at the fair since 1920.

“The Hopper side of the family is always there at the fair,” he said. “This is fun, family and tradition. You’re never too old to learn.

We work all year to show livestock. It’s a lot of fun.”

Bob and Donna Peters have two sons, Scott, Jessie and two daughters, Anne Rammel and Sarah Menzie, plus 13 grandchildren.

“We’ve had two grandchildren every year since 2005,” he said. “All of them were at the Darke County Fair this year. We were at Peters’ encampment on the east side of the sheep barn.”

Bob belongs to the Ohio Corriedale Club and the American Corriedale Association.

His son Scott and his family have taken over the showing of the animals. Peters, a 1963 graduate of Ansonia High School, has

helped with the Ansonia sports program for 41 years. He and Donna are now Versailles Tigers fan as their grandchildren attend school there and are involved in many activities.

Executive Board Meeting

Friday, May 10, 2013 • Preble County Fairgrounds • Eaton, Ohio The meeting was called to order by President Darin Bauck with the following board members present: Darin Bauck, Wayne Kemler, Nick Miniter, Ryan Craig, Bryan Vining, and Marcia Craig.

Secretary’s Report The minutes of the Executive Board Meeting from the Annual Meeting in 2012 were accepted as printed. The financial report was distributed showing a year-end increase of $1342 The current balance reported to date was $11,107. The American Junior Corriedale Association had year-end balance of $3151. All items approved as presented.

Tooth Rule The new tooth rule passed by the Past Presidents and State Directors in June of 2012 reads: “The executive board is authorized to appoint a person to be given the authority to disqualify any yearling ram or yearling ewe entered in the national show and sale and/or the national show that exhibits more than four permanent teeth.” This criteria must be met in order to be shown or sold as a yearling at a national Corriedale association sanctioned event. After checking sheep from various flocks and mouthing the individuals at the NAILE National Sheep in November, the Executive Board discussed amending the tooth rule so it does not include the National Show which is usually in November. Their recommendation to amend the rule will go to the Past Presidents and State Directors meeting for discussion.

Comeback Class The payout for the Comeback Yearling Ewe Class will be 1st place–$100 plus $50 buyer’s credit; 2nd place–$75 plus a $50 buyer’s credit; 3rd place–$50 plus $50 buyer’s credit. This is a total of $375 for our Comeback Class.

2014 National Show There has been an invitation to host a National Show in mid-July in conjunction with the North Dakota State Fair. Since we have our 100 year celebration of Corriedales coming into the US in 2014 the Executive Board will recommend that we have the National Show in Minot, North Dakota in 2015. This will go to the Past Presidents and State Directors for a final decision.

2014 National Show and Sale-100 Year Celebration In 2014 the American Corriedale Association will be celebrating the establishment of the Corriedale breed in the United States. This dual purpose breed was brought over from New Zealand in 1914 per the request of the National Wool Growers to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. They wanted a breed that would do well in range conditions. F.R. Marshall, head sheepman in the Bureau of Animal Industry and Frank S. King, President of the National Wool Growers traveled to New Zealand and imported 65 ewes and 10 rams to the government experiment station in Wyoming. A year later Mr. King also selected 35 head from the C.H. Ensor flock and imported these for the Celebrating 100 years of Corriedales in the F.S. King Brothers’ Company. F.S. King was responsible founding the American CorUS riedale Association and the Wyoming Corriedale Society. Bryan and Gina are working

The 2014 National Show and Sale will be the 100 year anniversary of Corriedales being imported into the US. A special logo has been designed by President Darin Bauck. The National Show and Sale will be in conjunction with the Midwest Stud Ram Sale in late June, 2014 in Sedalia, Missouri. Plans discussed were expanding the Extra to include pictures from past breeders with a reduced cost for these to be run by their owners. These could include the picture and a year listed with the owner’s name.

There was some concern that buyers at our National Show and Sale could have a yearling that time of year that is cutting teeth depending on feed conditions and environment. One suggestion was having two different yearling classes – spring born and fall born. We could also have classes for two-tooth, four-tooth and more than four teeth. After more discussion it was moved and seconded to “leave the rule as passed for our National Show and Sale but eliminate the rule for the NAILE in November. The yearling rams and yearling

2015 National in North Dakota Joana Friesz has extended the invitation for breeders in South Dakota, Montana and North Dakota to host a National Show in mid-July at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot. We would come in on a Thursday and be released on the following Monday after 5 p.m. The open show would be on Saturday or Sunday and the Supreme Show on Monday. We could present to the North Dakota Fair judges ranked one, two and three that could judge all breeds and market lambs, also. Additional money for premiums would be added to their current payout schedule. It was moved and seconded to have the 2015 National Show in Minot, ND in conjunction with the North Dakota State Fair. Motion was seconded. Motion passed. Any judges we would recommend should be presented to the state fair by July 2014.

2014 National Show and Sale-100 Year Celebration The 100 year celebration of Corriedales being imported into the US will be this upcoming year. We will be sending invitations out to all past breeders in hopes they will attend. Plans are to offer a special rate for past breeders in our upcoming Extra where they could just run pictures from their flock. An adult showmanship class was suggested as a fundraiser during this time. Setting up a facebook page will be done

by Lacie Hoffman and Staci Busch. This will offer free postings to Corriedale breeders who can share pictures, etc.

Judge nominations for the 2014 National Show & Sale were Jim Brandt and Ryan Hendrix. These were to be presented to Larry Mead, Sale Manager in no particular order. Meghan Phillippi was approved as the junior judge.

The most prestigious award presented by the American Corriedale Association is the Guy L. Green Award for service in a variety of ways to the American Corriedale Association over many years. The well deserving recipients were Bruce Hoffman & Family, South Dakota.

his is a big moment in American Corriedale history. This year 2014 is the 100 anniversary of the breed being in the United States. Over half of those years I have been involved with the breed, about 55 years ago my parents were raising fine wooled sheep in southeastern Montana. They were lambing those ewes in a cold wet spring, lots and lots of lambs could not take the weather and died, many lambs ‘failed to thrive’ due to their poor milking and wild dams that possessed very little maternal instincts. Mom and Dad got to talking about the breed they learned about while in college in Bozeman, Montana: Corriedale. After contacting the American Corriedale Association they came up with a list of breeders and were soon on their way to Hulett, Wyoming where they bought a set of rams from some FFA members. When the first cross of Corriedale lambs hit the ground the next spring there was no going back. Corriedales forever!

T

s a 5 year old kid I fell in love with the black noses on the lambs, the black points came with black hooves, no more feet trimming and absolutely open faces. No need to ‘wool blind’ the sheep. Mom and Dad suddenly had lambs that weighed 80+ pounds in the fall for sale and that was at least 20 pounds more than before Corriedales. Very easy keeping and high feed conversion, combined with a much higher lamb to ewe ratio, these sheep were the real deal. All these years later these are still the main reasons we raise this wonderful breed.

s soon as I started 4-H and wanted to raise sheep Dad decided I might as well raise not just Corriedales, but registered ones. By then he knew several breeders because he had bought rams for awhile, he took me to the ranch of C.R. Cooksey at Newcastle, Wyoming. We picked out ewes that were all sired by an Art King ram, AK K429 registration number 321887.

Turns out I started with some of the most respected bloodlines in the breed.

big

his year as we celebrate a great breed we still strive to raise sheep that are low maintenance, shear heavy fleeces and bring in about 160% lamb crop whether it be our seedstock ewes or the late lambing purebred, but unregistered, ewes. It is important to produce ewes free of wool-blindness, no pendulous udders or large teats. We can’t tolerate those traits as we sell both rams and ewes to commercial breeders that like us want low maintenance sheep. It is very important for us to keep our customers happy, one buyer has bought rams from us since 1971. In all these years we sell only sheep we consider ‘keepers,’ never forgetting that we represent the Corriedale breed. If our customers have a bad experience with our sheep it reflects on the whole breed.

T

ots of things seem to have changed over the years, unfortunately one change is the Ruppert 2082 lack of luster in our fleeces. We have purchased “Centennial” ‘Centennial’ a ram of imported bloodlines from and his fleece Ruppert’s Corriedales to improve our staple length and luster. We’ve been encouraged by the interest in lambs we will be getting from this ram in 2015.

orriedales have proven to be more than a dual purpose breed. Sure they do an outstanding job of producing food and fiber. But there’s an added bonus, friends! It’s our hope that we see our Corriedale family at the big celebration in Sedalia this June, we will be bringing a nice consignment of yearlings and lambs sired by Not So Slim and our new Humphrey ram, be sure to stop by our pens. AJCA Annual Meeting The AJCA held its annual meeting following the National Corriedale Show in Eaton, Ohio on May 10, 2013. The minutes from the 2012 AJCA meeting were approved as printed in the Spring 2013 Extra. The financial report showed a balance of $3151. This report was approved as presented.

Jacey Cook named Outstanding Youth Jacey Cook recently received the Outstanding Youth in Agriculture Award for her Area in Northwest Missouri for 2013.

The award is presented by the Brownfield Ag News Network.

Jacey was very proud to receive the award which was presented to her at the year-end 4-H recognition night for her county 4-H. She also received the 2013 Spirit Award given to the person who shows great enthusiasm and is active in 4-H programs throughout the year.

The awards capped off a very busy year for Jacey with 4-H activities and her Corriedale sheep. She attended 18 area county fairs, the Missouri State, the National Corriedale Show in Eaton, Ohio and finished the year going to North American International Livestock Expo in Louisville, Ky. Jacey raises and shows Corriedale sheep

Jacey Cook, right shows her puppy to Emma Peters. and is a member of the National Junior Corriedale Association and serves as director for her area. She is looking forward to the National Corriedale Show in 2014 in Sedalia, Mo. This will the 100th year celebration.

“Through my Corriedale sheep I get to travel and meet friends that I have met over recent years that I wouldn’t if I were not showing my sheep. Also I get some great looking trophies and jackets from the fairs and my fair T-shirts make up a big part of my wardrobe. I am proud to be a Corriedale breeder and shower and plan to raiser my sheep hopefully for a longtime.

It is the responsibility of the consignor to get their animals to this weighing and measuring following the show. If you do not participate in this part of the National evaluations then you will not be allowed to sell.

Queen’s message

Hello again! It’s Megan Hanson, your 2013-14 American Corriedale Queen. I was crowned on May 10, 2013 in Eaton, Ohio, the day before my 12th birthday. When I was crowned at the banquet I was so surprised and excited.

Our National Show and Sale is coming up in June and in Sedalia, Mo. If you ever wanted to attend the National I encourage you to make plans to attend this one! In 2014 the Corriedales celebrates 100 years in the United States. I’ve been told the directors have gone out of their way to make this an extra special event. I’m sad that I must give up my crown and sash in Sedalia, but it was a great experience and I encourage all of you junior girls to step up and represent our breed. I’m anxiously waiting to see who the next lucky girl will be.

I had many great experiences, met many people and created many great friendships while representing the American Corriedales. My only regret was not being able to make it to Louisville. I hope everyone has had a great lambing season. I can’t wait to start clipping, shearing, and working our lambs for the upcoming shows. I would love to see each and every one of

We retired from the sheep business in 2009 and sold our flock of Corriedales to Nick Miniter, Lightning Ridge Farm. Donna’s sheep pastures are now vineyards and the barns are storage for grape equipment and horse stalls. We have 150 acres of premium red wine grapes all harvested by hand. We sold 650+ tons of grapes to seven different wineries this past year. We have been traveling, spending time at our home on the coast, and watching our grandkids at their high school rodeos.

Some of our Corriedale accomplishments: ★26 National Champions, 16 rams and 10 ewes from 1990 to 2008 ★Both the National Champion ram and ewe the same year at five National Sales and one National Show ★A National Champion at either a sale or show nine consecutive years. ★1999 both Champion ram and ewe at both the Sale and Show. ★Two rams National Champion as lambs and again the next year as yearlings, 1993-94 and 2000-01. ★1999 Supreme Champion Ram NAILE, Louisville, KY ★2003 Record high selling yearling ram in the U.S. $6,800 ★Awarded outstanding Corriedale breeder twice, 1986 and 2000 ★Awarded the Guy L. Green award 2008 ★Donna served as president 1993.

We had a terrific set of Corriedales and enjoyed raising, showing and meeting all the great Corriedale people across the country. We miss our Corriedales and all of you but have many memories to look back on.

In Memoriam

Louis E. Zimmer, 84, of Royal Center, Ind. passstephed away Oct. 23, 2013 in the home he shared with his wife for 63 years.

Born Nov. 17, 1928, Louis was the son of the late John F. and Daisy (Crow) Zimmer.

On June 25, 1950, he married the love of his life, Betty Woneda Van Meter, she survives.

In 1942, Louis was a freshman in high school when he started his Corriedale flock of 10 head of bred Corriedale ewes. He graduated in 1946 from Royal Center High School. For many, many years he ran 200 plus head of Registered Corriedale ewes until selling the last of his Corriedales in 2006 because of health reasons. He enjoyed going to many of the Corriedale events, shows and sales and visiting with the many different Corriedale breeders. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren show Corriedales at open shows, county 4-H fairs and the Indiana State Fair.

Louis was a professional sheep shearer and judged many national shearing contests in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. For many years, he showed sheep and wool at the Indiana State Fair and won many awards. In 1985, Louis had the Grand Champion Ram at the North American Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. and Champion Corriedale Ram fleece in 2003. Louis was also awarded the Guy Green Award for lifetime achievement by the National Corriedale Association and Oren Wright Award from the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association.

As a hobby, Louis hand-crafted beauti-

ful bowls and other works which are cherished by those who received them as gifts.

Lou was a member of the Metea Baptist Church. He also served on the Board of Directors for Farm Bureau and the Cass County Louis Zimmer 4-H Fair Board. He was a long-time member and past president of the Logansport Rose Society. For many years, he served on the Harrison Township Advisory Board and was very proud of the improvements to the fire department. Lou was also a founding member and president of the Pioneer Pathfinders camping club in Royal Center.

Louis was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He and Betty enjoyed taking their children on vacations and camping trips. His greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Survivors include his wife; children, Gary (Peggy) of Rosedale, Jeffery (Bobbi) of Royal Center, Linda Zimmer of Royal Center, Sharon (David) Smith of Billings., Mont., Randal (Jennifer) of Winamac and Bradley (Ann Haley) of Indianapolis; and a sister. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond.

The ACA extends it’s deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Louis.
