2022 Year In Review
It has been a great honor to serve as the 2022 ACVP President. One of the highlights included the transition to more “normal” post-COVID interactions and the return of our in-person Annual Meeting It was so wonderful to see friends face-to-face and to give a lot of hugs! Over the past year, the Board of Directors (BOD) has been working hard for you. Highlighted are a few of the major accomplishments:
AMC Integration: In October 2021, ACVP partnered with our new management company, Association Management Center (AMC). We have fully integrated AMC into all ACVP processes. This new partnership adds a breadth and depth of resources that are critical for ACVP to be successful as we grow and face the challenges of our rapidly changing professional landscape. We are fortunate and excited to now have Sarah Bilissis as our full time Executive Director and Mary Kay Ams as our full time Director of Education and Certification. Expanded resources that are available to the college include administrative, financial, technological, and fundraising support. We look forward to additional enhancements.
Website and Technology Infrastructure: The most common theme that the BOD has heard from member volunteers is that the organization needs to be able to do more and do better with the website and technology infrastructure. Step one of this process is the transition from Basecamp to Teams (or other platforms) for committee interactions. Except for a few key stakeholders with specific needs, we are nearly 100% transitioned. In late 2022, the BOD approved a proposal for AMC to perform a comprehensive technology assessment by the end of the second quarter, 2023. This will be a detailed look at current and future ACVP needs and will require input across our organization We look forward to devising a long-term plan for technology enhancements.
Strategic Plan 2023-2027: Last Fall, the ACVP Board of Directors met for a 3-day summit to review and refresh strategic priorities. The BOD recognized and used as a foundation, key features of the 2018-2022 strategic plan that helped inform the path to operationalize goals. It became clear during the summit that organizational infrastructure was a key limiting factor to successful execution of major and minor college initiatives. (continued on next page)

Shaped by the previous plan, ACVP’s current strategic plan is streamlined to the key actionable activities that will prepare ACVP for the future. The plan will focus on educational missions at all stages of career development and address infrastructural needs critical to advance the ACVP mission. The pillars of the 20232027 plan are in place and the BOD will continue work in first few months of 2023 to set priorities and define actionable deliverables in preparation for roll out.
Certifying Examination: After incredibly challenging years and rapid course changes during the COVID pandemic, the Certifying Examination Board (CEB) successfully administered the Phase I and Phase II examinations in 2021 and 2022. In the face of these major challenges, the CEB continues to evolve our examination and make lasting and modernizing changes to the Phase II examination that reflect best practices in high-stakes examinations. The CEB also continued to evaluate vendor relationships and identified and secured a partnership with a trusted vendor to provide the highest quality examination experience for our candidates. Thank you to Anne Lewis and Melinda Camus for their tireless work as CEB chairs, and the entire CEB team for maintaining the highest examination standards. We also welcome Shelley Burton and Ryan Jennings as the new CEB chairs!
Updated Newsletter: I would like to give a big shout out to the Media Communications Committee who, with support from AMC, have revamped and modernized our newsletter to create a more engaging mechanism for college communications. I hope everyone is enjoying the new format!
Establishment of the Capen Fellowship: The college was honored by a generous gift from Charles Capen and his family to establish the Capen Fellowship for veterinary pathology residents pursuing a PhD and a career in research pathology. The ACVP awards committee has built the framework for the application and review process. We anticipate our first call for applications in early 2023.
In-Person Meeting: As mentioned at the beginning of this update, the face-to-face meeting was a true highlight for 2022. Thank you to the Annual Meeting Committee for a fantastic program and for all those who worked behind the scenes to make everything come together. I cannot wait for #ACVP2023 in Chicago!
Thank you all for allowing me to serve as your 2022 ACVP President. I loved every minute! It has been a pleasure to work for you and with the amazing group of people that make up the BOD. There are great things to come in 2023 and the college could not be in a better position with Dr. Jerry “Rockstar” Ritchey as the 2023 President!
With deep gratitude,
Kelli Boyd, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Message From Jerry Ritchey 2023 ACVP President
Priorities for the 2023 Board of Directors will involve the continuation and completion of several on-going initiatives including:
Strategic Plan: This Spring, the BOD will focus on finalizing the 2023-2027 strategic plan The plan targets the education and support evolution of a pathologist from veterinary student, trainee, early, mid- and late-career, and finally emeritus Diplomate status. The plan will also develop enhanced infrastructure related to the digital technologies that currently restrict many of our initiatives in education, the website and the certifying examination. The goal is to finalize the objectives of the strategic plan, communicate with the membership and then set timelines, metrics and committee/task force charges at the Spring, face-to-face, Board of Directors meetings (April 1-April 2)
TPAC: The membership recently approved the formation of a Training Program Accreditation Committee (TPAC) to initiate and maintain an accreditation process for anatomic and clinical pathology training programs. Development of program accreditation brings us in compliance with an accreditation process required for recognized veterinary specialties. The TPAC will use as their guiding document the report generated by the Training Program Accreditation Task Force The TPAC has been formed (Co-chaired by Drs Lauren Richey and Greg Krane) and the Board will work to keep this effort moving down the field until we can cross the goal line by accrediting our first training programs. Overall, this is anticipated to be a 2–3-year effort.
Core Competency Task Force: An important supporting role for the work of the TPAC is to review and revise core competencies. The Training Program Committee oversaw the development of a core competency document several years ago The Board will seed a task force and charge them with developing core competencies for both anatomic and clinical pathology.

Veterinary Pathology Journal: Preliminary to new contract negotiations with SAGE, the Board sought the counsel of a publishing consultant who made recommendations for improved communications, and marketing/advertising, subscriptions, and digital publication improvements. Additionally, there should be a specific Journal strategic plan focused to address all digital publications and preparation for a move to open access Although the latter is not imminent, forecasts suggest a move (forced or otherwise) is on the horizon The Board will work with the Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor and the Publishing Consultant to negotiate a favorable new contract with SAGE and to initiate a strategic planning process for the Journal. (Note: the last planning effort for the Journal was in 2012). Lastly, thank you to Jeff L. Caswell for his many years of service to the Journal.
Governance: In 2017, ACVP assembled a Governance Task Force to evaluate our organizational structure and bring our organizational governance into the 21st Century. You may remember from those recommendations that we moved from a “Council” to a Board of Directors, discontinued the combined Secretary/Treasurer position and established a Chief Operating Officer and Treasurer among other changes. Several other good recommendations were left on the table, and we would like to revisit those and evaluate if any can be pursued and implemented.
I look forward to a great year and am pleased to serve as President!
