opefully everyone has settled back nicely into the new school year and autumn as we approach the last quarter of the year.

If you haven’t had a chance to enjoy some time on the new adult pool deck with the plunge pool and Rick’s bar you should really try to make some time. And the same would go for the golf theater.

The feedback from both additions has been extremely positive which is very encouraging as these were the first steps to phase 1 of the works planned as part of the Strategic Plan. Very soon you will see works start to upgrade Crash, Chill and Joe’s as well as the adjacent restrooms, and light touch-ups to The Fireside. These works will bring us to a close of Phase 1 projects at which time we will move directly into Phase 2, which predominately consists of upgrade and refurbishment projects such as, new Bay Cafe, both changing rooms, and more. And the last phase, and largest part of the works, Phase 3 is receiving the final planning touches.

When we speak about the Strategic Plan we almost always get pulled into a discussion about the facilities and development but it is important not to forget the softer elements that form part of the strategy as well.

For instance, enhancement and continued building on the Club’s strong American identity. It is always an interesting discussion when you ask any Member what American identity means to them, we are working with the Membership Committee and F&B Committee to continue to move these initiatives in the right direction. We have had some terrific sporting events recently which certainly help to promote our American Identity, the NCAA Football Tailgate Party, and the NHL Stanley Cup event as well as the Live game up in Shenzhen. Of course there is much more to American identity than simply sports but these 3 events in particular were terrific and fun for all that attended.

Speaking of American identity, I would like to wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving, a terrific American holiday!

One of the best events of the year, the Senior Life Members Dinner is always one to look forward to and it will be an honor to host.

And I would like to take a moment to thank David Loan and his team for continuing to deliver on service and quality. We are always looking to improve and we are certainly moving in the right direction.

The value which we have been enjoying at the Club has been maintained and we continue to show strong financial results – the Club is in great shape, and thanks to all the wonderful and hard-working staff we are so fortunate to have.

ell the summer heat and rain is behind us and we’re getting into the best time of the year in Hong Kong. The fall is a great time of year to play some golf so get your game tuned up in one of our two simulators and don’t forget that we have 10 memberships at Macau Golf and Country Club and Lotus Hill Golf Resort.

Both are wonderful facilities and make for a nice escape from the city.

As you know, our golf instruction is operated by GolfTec – we’re very pleased to be associated with this state of the art teaching program.

We’re excited to roll out a new learn to golf junior program – perfect for young ones that want to take up the sport. The instruction will be done on the Multi-purpose Court beside Tennis Court 6. Full details of the junior program are in the magazine page 35. There are limited openings as we start up the program so if you’re interested, make sure you read the details of the program and sign-up for the course.

As you read in Mr. Tranbarger’s letter, we’re excited to begin the renovations to Crash, Chill and Joe’s (CC&J). We understand the importance of children’s programming so we’re committed to ensuring that we create an experience in CC&J that is unrivalled. We expect the renovations to take three months so during the period of construction; we’ll be moving some of the CC&J video games to the main floor. There’s always a big inconvenience factor during renovations but we’re certain the inconvenience will be well worth it. At the same time as the improvements to CC&J are underway, we’ll be renovating the male and female washrooms in the corridor outside of CC&J. These improvements are well overdue. Finally, we’ll be making some minor cosmetic improvements to The Fireside over the next couple of months.

Over the past three months, we have received a number of comments from Members of unsupervised children running through Bay Cafe.

Please watch your children – there are Members dining and staff carrying food and drinks – unsupervised children is a recipe for an accident to happen. There have also been a couple of incidents of younger children up in the gym at the Country Club after hours. Accidents will surely happen so we take these types of incidents seriously. Please remind your children that the gym is off limits after closing time.

If you missed our first tailgate party of the College Football season, the Notre Dame vs. Michigan game on September 2, you missed a great party.

We had just about 100 people enjoy some real authentic tailgate food and beverages and a pretty good game (even though the wrong team won). We’ll find some other big time games on Sunday morning and do it again. Watch the weekly e-Newsletter for the details. Also, we were very fortunate to have The Stanley Cup at the Club on September 12. I grew up in Toronto and idolized that Cup (the Maple Leafs actually used to win) so it was a real treat to have the most famous trophy in North American sports at the Club. Our Club is the place for big-time sports – we’ll have NFL and College Football on the screens and of course the World Series starting this month. You can count on us to be THE place for sports!

Finally, there are some fantastic Club Events coming up over the next two months: our first Oktoberfest on October 20 (we’re going over the top on this one), Halloween on October 26, the Annual Wine Fair on November 3 and of course Thanksgiving on November 22. And don’t forget, the Annual Meeting is on November 21.

There is always a lot to do at The American Club. We look forward to seeing you at the Club.

The American Club supports Operation Santa Claus (OSC) every year. It is an annual charity campaign jointly organized by the South China Morning Post and RTHK. Over the years, Operation Santa Claus donors have raised over $110 million in funds and encouraged Hongkongers to share their good fortune with the needy during the winter festive season. Under General Manager David Loan’s leadership, Management and the Food & Beverage (F&B) Committee did a superb job this year. Total operating revenue of $251.2 million fell short of budget by $1.9 million, but increased $5.5 million compared to last year, highlighting better engagement by our membership.

After expenses, we ended with an operating surplus of $5.1 million. And, while we appreciate Management delivering a strong bottom-line, we also accept the goal of the Club is not to run major surpluses, but rather, make sure we deliver as much value and satisfaction to our Members as possible. In prior years, we budgeted 100% staffing levels with our breakeven budget (our goal is to be fully staffed), but in reality, there are always staff vacancies, and this payroll underspend was the main contributing factor to our positive surplus. As understaffing directly affects member experience,

we are trying harder with staff retention to better fulfill operational expectations, while maintaining a world-class institution.

Investment Portfolio & Cash Flow The investment fund currently sits at $499.7 million, maintaining its prudent risk/reward allocation of 30% to global equities and 70% to global bonds. Our investment manager, Blackrock, over the past 12 months outperformed the equity benchmark by 33 bps (11.06% net vs. 10.73% benchmark), and settled 2 bps behind the fixed income benchmark (1.34% net vs. 1.36% benchmark).

The Club’s cash flow remains healthy post recent capex projects with total liquid assets of $126.2 million at the close of the financial year.

Capital Expenditures After the success of the Town Club renovation, the Board of Governors shifted its focus to the Country Club, where we are phasing renovations and upgrades to the entire facility inline with our 2012 Strategic Plan. We hope to enhance and transform the Country Club in time for the Club’s O C TO B E R & N OV E M BER • 2 0 1 8

100th Year Anniversary in 2025, as well as address the changing needs of our membership.

The bulk of FC’s focus was supporting the future-proofing work done by Management and the Development Committee (DC) with mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems upgrades, waterproofing, the completion of our new golf simulator The Bunker, the expansion of the adult deck with newly installed plunge pool and Rick’s, as well as the upcoming renovation of Crash, Chill & Joe’s and adjacent bathrooms for our younger tweens. Please find time to try these venues as feedback has been overwhelmingly positive!

Post a rigorous design and tender process, all Phase 1 upgrades were completed on schedule and closely tracking well below our initial $72 million approved budget. Tightly implementing the first phase of the 2012 Strategic Plan on time with cross disciplinary committee support, you should be proud of these new facilities we will thoroughly enjoy for decades to come.

Maintenance capex was also a priority this fiscal year, with our $23 million budget in-line with expected non-operating revenues (e.g. initiation, transfer and re-nomination fees), and a separate $24 million budget for mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) system upgrades.

While we ended $5.9 million over budget with MEP upgrades due to additional builders work, this was offset by our savings in maintenance capex. This year, with the input of FC Member, Kenneth Rehmann, we investigated better approaches to refine our capex budgeting process, the same way the best hospitality groups globally look at maintaining their world class properties. This process allowed us to limit capex spending to $17.2 million, saving the Club $5.8 million. Ken’s expertise as well as other FC Members’ domain

knowledge have been invaluable for operating excellence at the Club.

Fiscal Year 2018/19 Budget & Annual General Meeting We have four core objectives for next year: 1. continue to operate the Club in a fiscally responsible manner (meaning we won’t spend more money than we take in); 2. improve member experience with appropriate staffing levels, increased programming, better training and improved F&B menus; 3. continue to provide high levels of member value, engagement and satisfaction; 4. better engage with our fellow “American Pillars”- HKIS, AmCham, American Women Association, USA Rugby, and the U.S. Consulate General.

Based on our policy of small annual dues increases, every year we look at operating costs and determine operational efficiencies and strategic cuts needed. After this exercise, we have proposed a minor dues increase of 2.6% reflecting a break even budget with tight employee vacancy factors now incorporated.

With this increase, we will implement an across the board raise in staff wages by 3.5%, while adding front facing headcount to Forty Niner/ McKay’s, extra lifeguards for pool safety, staff for children’s birthday parties, coaches for our new golf simulators, additional servers for Southside Pool & Grill and Rick’s, and dedicated locker room and gym cleaners across both Clubs.

Finally, we’re also excited with the potential launch of the financially independent, American Club Foundation (ACF). To be led by a separate leadership Board, we are endeavoring to better coordinate and strengthen our corporate social responsibility activities combatting

Hong Kong’s growing income inequality suffering (for those interested in serving as Founding Foundation Board members, please reach out to the Club directly).

Together, these initiatives will solidify staff retention, member experience and public participation, while further enhancing our Club’s reputation with those underserved in Hong Kong.

Better community engagement and “hands-on” service opportunities for our youth are frequent suggestions by many of our Members, and we look forward to your support with this important initiative in conjunction with our American Pillar partners.

Our American identity is more than just words, it’s the underpinning of how we empower our staff, engage our community, and fulfill our mission treating others with respect and kindness. We should remember, membership is a privilege, not a right.

And while Hong Kong may change in the future, our identity must not. Our diverse group of engaged Members, past Boards and service culture spirit make The American Club the shining light we should be proud of and second home we adore. Please cherish the fact, literally hundreds of dedicated men and women are striving to be better and more relevant to you and your families every day. Ultimately more than facilities, our collective moments and shared experience make the Club the special community it is, and I humbly offer my gratitude. Triple R Update

Urban Garden As part of the Club's Triple R initiative, the Country Club hosted its second Urban Garden workshop in August enabling Members of all ages to learn about the benefits of sustainable gardening and to re-establish their relationship with nature. The Club will continue to develop the Urban Garden with Rooftop Republic. Check out the new deck chairs and spend some quiet time in the garden. Here is the latest garden update report: • Thai & Sweet basil are growing really well, apple mint is growing a little more slowly.

• Eggplants look better & grown bigger. However, okra is experiencing slow growth.

• Peppermint, thyme & oregano are doing very well.

• Sweet potato leaves have been trimmed & harvested and this will continue regularly.

• Water spinach propagating in the bottles was harvested.

• Cucumber flowers have started to show, but some female flowers withered, this could be caused by fruit flies or lack of pollination.

Helping to Preserve the Club’s History Daniel Zigal’s first memory of The American Club was at the fifth floor of the original Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Building, since demolished. This was 1953, and he was a four-year-old boy visiting with his parents Leon and Irene, who joined the Club in 1948.

They were among the Club's earliest post WWII Members.

While he recalls the Club was less of a family place than today, with certain areas closed to children and furniture made of rattan, Mr. Zigal says, "What struck me was five autographed photos of five U.S. Presidents. I remember Eisenhower, and was amazed to know he was a sitting president – and there was his picture."

Decades later, Mr. Zigal would play an important role in ensuring the presidential photos are still on display in the Club. But first, he had to become a Member in his own right.

If the family name "Zigal" is unusual, then so too is the history that led to Mr. Zigal becoming a Member – for it took two tumultuous revolutions to prompt his family to arrive and settle here in Hong Kong. The first was the Russian Revolution, in the early days of which his father and relatives fled Siberia, arriving in

Shanghai with what little they could carry.

It was in Shanghai that Mr. Zigal's father met his mother, who had been born of Russian parents in Harbin, northeast China. They married, and obtained American citizenship after living briefly in the U.S. His father held the agency for General Motors, selling Cadillacs, Opels, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs Buicks and GMC trucks that cruised the streets of Shanghai.

With the Chinese Communist Revolution beginning, Mr. Zigal's parents headed south again, arriving in Hong Kong in 1948, where his father continued selling General Motors vehicles through his company Triangle Motors.

Mr. Zigal was born in Hong Kong one year later.

To the young Daniel, the Club was a place where he made a

lot of friends, as young kids then had few places to go to socialize.

"Some are still here, he says, like Peter Fishel. I first met him one summer in the 1950’s in Karuizawa Japan; my mother told me, 'You stay away from that hooligan!' and 60 years later, we're still friends."

Halloween costume parties at the Club were a thrill for Mr. Zigal – he won a best dressed prize, and while a boy he learned to dance at Cotillion, wearing white gloves as he was taught the Cha Cha and the Foxtrot.

Mr. Zigal's father liked taking part in events at the Club, such as hosting dignitaries from the USA. But while he passed away in 1962, Mr. Zigal's mother became one of the Club's oldest Members, and was evidently a somewhat regal figure. "My mother was always immaculately dressed, coiffured; the staff was very respectful speaking with her. She loved coming to the Club for New Year's Eve parties – it was the only Club that we were Members of that had a live band," he says.

Before she passed away in 1993, Mr. Zigal's mother was presented with a memento featuring an original doorknob saved from the St. George's Building premises,

recognizing her as a Senior Life Member*. A replica of this doorknob is now given as a gift to all newly recognized Senior Life Members.

and maybe inheriting his father's business flair, Mr. Zigal developed a thriving business, and later bought ICD's Asian operation.

Today, while he could comfortably retire, Mr. Zigal keeps working.

"I love the thrill of it," he says.

"The whole aura of trading is exciting.

I always try to be on the right side when I take a position, whether it's go long, or go short."

For the growing Daniel, childhood was not endless halcyon days dancing and making friends at the Club. "I was sent to 'prison camp' – boarding school," he says. "I spent three years in the Philippines, and the remaining three years in California, before enrolling in the University of San Francisco and The Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management in Arizona."

Mr. Zigal then joined ICD Group, a New York based trading company that was primarily dealing in bulk chemicals, and was anticipating an expansion to the Far East. They were looking for someone who spoke Chinese and Russian, with experience living and working in China – and Mr. Zigal fit the bill. He spent four years at the group's New York headquarters, before moving to Hong Kong in 1978, to open an ICD office here.

The timing proved good, partly as China was just opening for business.

Mr. Zigal joined the Club when he arrived to open the ICD office, and though it became mainly a place for socializing, he brought some business clients. "In the early 80s, I brought one of the first delegations allowed to leave China – to eat hamburgers and hot dogs at the Club. I had to show them how to eat them."

He enjoyed events such as celebrating the Fourth of July, when the Club hired a Yaumatei car ferry for trips to enjoy barbecues at Silvermine Bay or on Lamma.

Mr. Zigal's parents loved the horse races in Shanghai, and owning horses in Shanghai and did likewise in Hong Kong, where Mr. Zigal continues the tradition. He recalls heading into The American Club’s private box at the races, where table number one was reserved for his mother – who liked to place the minimum bet of HK$5 or later HK$10, and always sat apparently unperturbed whether her horse was winning or losing.

There's no such poker face for Mr. Zigal. "I always put mouth where money is," he says – and he doesn't just start getting excited as a race enters the final furlong, but remarks, "My wife Suzanne, thinks I'm going to

have a heart attack when our horse enters the starting stalls."

While Mr. Zigal says owning horses is not always profitable, given all the expenses involved, he cares little for the financial side of it, remarking, "How can you determine the value on seeing your horse win a race?"

Rugby is another passion for Mr. Zigal. He was first invited to the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens in the early 1980s, and later began supporting the U.S. Eagles team as they started making a name for themselves. "It was a patriotic thing," he says. "I am proud to be one of the “Golden Eagles” who annually support the U.S. Eagles team. When they're here, I sponsor a dinner for the players at The American Club."

He still has a special shirt the Club made in 1994 to support the team, and the players know to look his way during matches here, spotting him in red, white and blue colors – a 69-year-old fan shouting and waving.

In July this year, Mr. Zigal even watched the team in San Francisco, as they finished sixth in the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Also during his free time, Mr. Zigal and his family have a boat, and like

to stay overnight at Tai Long Wan or Double Haven. He has no plans to leave, saying, "Hong Kong is my home; I've made my life here.

My business is here; my kids were born here."

For those kids – two stepchildren, two natural children – the Club has proven an important part of their lives. While all have learned to swim at the Club, and enjoyed social events, Mr. Zigal's son Danny is now a third generation of the family to be a Member of the Club.

Mr. Zigal remembers the arguments that raged at The Clubs Extraordinary General Meeting/Annual General Meetings before the Country Club and the current Town Club were established, but says the plans

by Rick Kroos, Tom Greer and the Committee Members at the time were "genius". Today, he rates the McKay’s steakhouse as "one of the best", while the Forty Niner sports bar is "a great place to casually meet with friends to have an easy meal.

But there's one place in the Club that's particularly special to Mr. Zigal – The Presidents’ Room, and the reason harks back to his very first visit to The American Club, back in 1953, as a boy who admired the photos of the U.S. Presidents.

"When the Club moved from St. George's Building to its present location, all the portrait photos disappeared," recalls Mr. Zigal.

"It was a few years before I realized that they were not hanging in the Town or Country Club. I talked to Dick Ross, the General Manager at that time, and said, 'let's look for them.' But they were nowhere to be found. When James DiRenzo, the new General Manager was employed by the Club, I again asked him to again search for them, as I could not believe that they were just tossed away. James eventually found them

in the basement of the Country Club car park wrapped in newspaper."

While the originals were then placed in safe keeping, replicas were made, and Mr. Zigal designed the frames so they could adorn a wall of The Presidents’ Room.

To Mr. Zigal, there is still something wonderful about the photos, especially the fact that the early Presidents of the American Club had the foresight to write to the sitting Presidents of the USA to request personalized autographed photographs for the walls of the Club, and therefore ensuring that the Club remain connected to its American identity for generations to come.

So while Mr. Zigal and his family are part of the Club's history and ongoing story, he has in turn helped preserve the Club’s history and heritage.

Junior Tennis highlights of the summer

Valentin Schweitzer – got down and dirty on the clay courts in Berlin.

Eva Genesi – attended the Nike Tennis Camp in New Jersey, which was great. Made new friends, played in beautiful weather. Loved the doubles matches!

Subin Shetty – kicked off his summer with a USTA Tournament followed by 3 weeks of tennis camp in Amherst.

Oscar Schwebig – had a great time following a tennis camp at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge (New Jersey), he enjoyed sharing his passion for tennis with local kids and worked hard on improving his serves.

Many of our Junior students are back and eager to resume practice, which is proving very popular with new requests from players who want to join our Junior Program. Accommodating everyone in group lessons is our priority. Then we will do our best to offer Junior private lessons during off-peak times and school breaks.

The tennis team is excited about the season and looks forward to providing a great tennis experience to all the participants.

In addition to our regular Junior classes and the Junior Development Program (JDP), this season we’re introducing special practices for those who will represent The American Club in the HKTA Junior League. The key is to develop a better teamwork between players so they know how one another works when partnered up in doubles.

Adult Tennis Program We are preparing for a busy tennis season. Some have taken a complete break during the summer, while others have sharpened their skills. Either way, all-league teams are ready for action. Whether you practice for competing or have other aspirations, our PBI coaches aim to provide the best comprehensive program available. Coach Luis is our new adult's group coordinator, and he is challenged this season to increase the number of basic skilled

Farewell to our Tennis Pro Dario Dario announced his resignation recently as he will be relocating with his wife to Europe. He is grateful for his time and experiences at The American Club during the last 2 years. We are delighted for his contributions to the entire program and especially the Junior League development. From all of us at The American Club, we would like to say Thank you to Dario. He will undoubtedly be missed, and we wish him well on his new journey. We are already in the process of confirming a replacement for Dario who will take over his role. Watch this space for more details.

American Club / Ladies Recreation Club vs. UK Jesters On July 18, The American Club and Ladies Recreation Club combined forces to play a very social but competitive squash match against The Jesters, a touring team from the North of England. After 5 consecutive days of matches with other city clubs in Hong Kong, the skies cleared briefly for their visit to the Country Club. With the newest Squash Courts in town, a beautiful poolside setting, new Rick's bar and golf simulators, it was a fitting finale for what must have been one of the rainiest weeks ever. The matches were well balanced, and 2 deciders played out to 5-sets; however, the Jesters eked out a 4-3 victory.

Summer Squash League

The 4th annual Summer Squash League playoff finale was held at the Hong Kong Football Club on August 30, with The American Club vying for its first playoff victory. Having finished 2nd, by overtaking Hong Kong Cricket Club in the final match of the season, it was always going to be a challenge to match the strength and depth of the HKFC. The HKFC won handily and did a 3-peat of the season and playoffs. The LRC won the inaugural event in 2015. United Services Recreation Club and Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club rounded out the rest of the clubs participating in the summer league.

44 players and guests attended the event dinner, the most since the league started 4 years ago. The photos and postmatch dinners are testaments to the popularity and camaraderie of the sport.

The American Club Junior Golf Program (4 – 8 years)

Our new Junior Golf Program provides kids with a series of simple golf lesson packages to be conducted at the Club. All the skills required to play ShortGolf can be learned quickly and easily by all ages thanks to learning cues built into the equipment, and to learn fun techniques.

ShortGolf is an innovative golf game and learning system with each element designed to emulate the real game of golf while making it easier and more fun. ShortGolf has a great ‘feel’, alike to real golf, and this makes it a fantastic activity with a range of clubs coming in different sizes. Our colorful oversized clubs, soft balls

and innovative ‘sticky’ targets combined with built-in teaching, learning cues to accelerate skill development, and a friendly coach provide early success for all.

This program builds on the fundamentals of putting, chipping, pitching and full shot to develop playing ability quickly and effectively, and incorporates equipment and instruction that allows golf to be learned and played in non-traditional venues, such as in a gym, on a football pitch or on the beach. We will do a 1-hour session once a week for 5 weeks. In week 1 we will cover putting, week 2 chipping, week 3 pitching, week 4 full swing and

in week 5 we will combine all the skills together, and have the kids play a small course set-up for them.

Junior Golf programs operates every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursdays from 3:30pm – 4:30pm & 4:30pm – 5:30pm at the Outdoor Multi-purpose Court.

A new and advanced class from Victoria Vargas, Former Faculty at the Official School of The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago teaches body awareness and strength through ballet. Three years ago I faced more stress than I was accustomed to and wasn’t sure how to de-stress.

I started running and little did I know just how much it would impact my life. Running helps me feel calm and relaxed, and helps me stay focused. I joined some of the local races which I really enjoyed and eventually started running longer and longer distances. I took a long distance running course and became a certified long distance running coach.

What races have you run and what is your goal?

In the past three years, I’ve participated in several international and local races. The highlights include the Hong Kong Standard Chartered full marathon and the Oxfam Trailwalker, plus the overseas Marathons in New York, Berlin, Osaka, Tai Chung and Nagano, Japan.

I am currently training for my next race, the Chicago Marathon in October and I am already signed up for the Tokyo Marathon and London Marathon in 2019.

My progress has improved from my first Osaka Marathon (4 hours 5 minutes) to the Nagano Marathon (3 hours 25 minutes) with training and proper diet.

My goal is to finish with a time of 3 hours 15 minutes and qualify to run the Boston Marathon.

Any tips for our Members?

Don’t forget to do some body conditioning and to stretch! You have to build up the right muscle for running long distances. After each run, lactic acid will build up in your muscles, and you must stretch; otherwise, your muscles will be too tight and tired causing injury.

Circus Ninja Warrior (all ages)

Our camps are designed to encourage positive thinking and for campers to believe in themselves.

The goal of Circus Ninja Warrior is to use the circus arts as a tool to help build self-esteem, gain courage, trust, overcome fear, build confidence and have fun while doing so. Children will rotate to a new activity station every 7-10 minutes learning new skills or racticing to master the ones they have already learnt.

There are over 30 activities for you to experience and enjoy including single trapeze, swinging trapeze, double trapeze, Spanish web, Lyra, Adagio, stunt bike, mini tramp, vaulting, hand to hand balancing, juggling, pyramids, tumbling, Jr. stilt walking, Chinese ribbons, flower sticks, diablo, rolls bolla spinning plates, tight wire slackline and much more!
