UIL Lonestar Cup Boys Eagle Places 3rd at State!

The New Diana athletic, nonathletic and academic Programs earned a tie for 13th place in the UIL 3-A LoneStar Cup standings for the 2017-2018 school year, accumulating 40 points overall.

Area schools also placing in the top 25 included Mt. Vernon(5th), Hughes Springs(T16th), district rivals Beckville(21st) and White Oak(25th). Brock ran away with the 3A cup, accumulating 86 points overall. Standings include points attained in the following sports, nonathletic and academic events: State and Area Marching Band, Tennis, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track & Field, Academics, One Act Play, Softball, Baseball.

Mr. Mark Ferrer, the Principal

of New Diana High School stated,”Congratulations to all our participants and coaches for helping New Diana HS place in the top 15 in the Lone Star Cup. Our coaches and kids worked tremendously hard in competing in all aspects this year.

We are very proud of everyone's accomplishments!”

Lady Eagles

The New Diana Lady Eagle Golfers, 959, finish 12th out of 16 teams at the Region 2-AAA Tourney this year. Lauren James led the Eagles with a 12th place finish individually with scores of 105-100=205.

Jennifer Chandler finished with a 114-131=235, Alexandra Leslie with a 134-116=250, Joelle Newton with a 137-134=271 and Jacey Loeza with a 135-143=278.

This is a great showing for the Lady Eagles as they gear up for the next

season of golf. With only 1 player graduating, the Eagles will make a run for the District Title along with another trip to Regionals. A trip to the State tournament is in their sights as they head into the summer. finished 2nd in the 200m. & Asia Newsome 3rd in the 200 m. Also qualifying were Haleigh Holt in the 400 m. dash.

On the boys side Jack Miller won the boys pole vault with winning vault of 14 ft. A.J. Thomas also qualified placing 4th in the 100 m. dash. Alan Brown finished 6th in the 110 Hurdles.

3A Area Results Representing New Diana was the girls 4x100m sprint relay & 800m. relay team of Lauren James, Auniau Parks, Anajia Harris & Asia Newsome. The girls placed 1st in the 400 meter sprint relay & 2nd in the 800 meter relay. Individual honors went to Anajia Harris who

3A Region 2 Results Jack miller competed on Saturday April 28th in the Region 2 Class 3A Regional track & field meet, taking 1st place in Pole Vault with a vault of 15’0. Jack advanced to represent New Diana ISD at the UIL State Track & Field Meet Friday May 10th at 8 a.m. in Austin, Texas

Superintendent's Corner 2 FFA 3

New Diana advanced to the UIL State Tournament with 3rd place finish at the Class 3A Region II Tournament held at Oak Hurst Golf Club.

New Diana, made its third straight trip to the state tournament, finished third with a 666 total.

Troup won the title with a 624 total, and Pottsboro was the runner-up at 633.

New Diana was paced by Freshman Sam Benson with a 161 two-day total. Sophmore William Leslie finished at 166, Seniors Blayde Weekley 172 and Jackson Sampson and Ethan Thornton 173.

The Boy's Eagle Golf Team held on in a thriller playoff to Capture 3rd Place in the TEXAS UIL 3A GOLF TOURNAMENT at Grey Rock GC in Austin, TX. This is the 1st time in the History of New Diana Athletics that any TEAM has Medaled in a State Competition.

After the 1st day of competition, the Eagles were in 3rd place at 325.

Troup was in 2nd Place at 322 and leading the pack was Pottsboro at 309. In 4th place was Comanche at 336 and 5th place was Merkel at 341.

The Eagles endured the 90+ temperatures to shoot 332 and finish in a tie for 3rd with Merkel who stormed back with a great score of 316.

The Playoff Featured all 5 Players of each team playing the 18 Hole. Each Team will take the 4 Best Scores on that hole. The Eagle Golfers turned it on to have (5)-4-4-4-4=16. Merkel meanwhile struggled with a 5-4-4(7)-4=17. Eagles win by 1.

Congrats to Junior Bladye Weekely with scores of 79-83=162, Sophomore William Leslie 8183=164, Freshman Sam Benson 80-84=164. Senior Ethan Thornton 85-82=167 and Senior Jackson Sampson 85-86=171.

Interesting footnote. New Diana was the ONLY Team to have ALL 5 players to shoot under 87 for both days.

UIL State Results Jack Miller finished 3rd in the pole vault competition @ the UIL State Track & Field meet @ UT Austin.

Jack cleared 15 feet to capture the bronze medal. Jack has shattered the record held by in the pole vault. Not only did Jack vault but he ran the 200 meter dash, 400 meters, & different legs on the mile relay from 7th grade on. Being an all around track athlete allowed him to sign with LeTourneau University in

Longview, Texas to continue pole vaulting and pursue his education in Engineering.

Looking Forward

Greetings fellow NDISD community members...

The 2017-18 school year has now come to a close. Our 2018 senior class graduated Thursday, May, 24th at LeTourneau's Belcher Center.

As always the year begins and ends all too quickly.

Many parts of the district's Strategic Plan 2.0 have been met this year. One of the most significant pieces was the recent passage of the bond that will enable the district to complete the phase II expansion of the Robert F. Hunt elementary school. The expansion will include additional classroom space, an activity space, and a new wing which will encompass fourth and fifth grades; leaving the current structure (East Campus) available for growth for the secondary campuses. The New Diana ISD Board of Trustees is set to approve the civil portion of the project in early July, with the final building design bids coming in August. Construction activity should be observable in mid July with anticipated completion in August of 2019. You can monitor construction updates via our school district website.

Thus, as we bring closure to this past school year, we already are looking forward to what the 2018-19 year will bring. Teachers will report back for their annual inservice days on Thursday, August 9th; while students first day will be Monday, August 20th. Until then, I hope everyone is enjoying a much needed summer break.

Elementary staff save the life of a choking student

Robert F. Hunt Elementary is just like most schools day to day. You'll find it filled with teachers trained to assess the needs of their students and give each the necessary attention, but on this day there wasn't any training to prepare the staff for what student Aaliyah Green would need. She was in need of someone to save her life.

Teaching aid Britney Reavis was in the cafeteria attending to students as usual when she noticed something wasn't right.

"I just looked over at her and her eyes were red and watery. She just looked like something was wrong. So when I walked over to her I asked if she was ok. She shook her head no I asked her if she was choking she shook her head yes so I started trying to do the Heimlich Manuever on her." Reavis said.

Reavis' attemps were not successful, but she knew time was running out. Thats' when she called on her colleague Thressa Loyd. Lloyd was standing in the cafeteria cleaning up when she noticed the cries for help.

"I heard my name Thressa, Thressa, Aaliyah, she's choking. She's not breathing, I need help! I need help! She tried the Heimlich and she couldn't get it. So she wanted me to try. So I tried and I tried and I tried."

Lloyd was unsuccessful also. The teachers remained calm, but they were getting worried as they ran out of options. Both rushed down the hall to get to the nurses office. There they made one last attempt to save the little girls life. Officer Clay Robertson was there as they tried the Heimlich one last time.

"I put her up against my chest and was able to pull three or four times and I could hear on the third or fourth time that there appeared to be some kind of air exchange at that time." said Robertson But even though they could hear air Green was still choking. That's when Kerry Krienke stepped in.

"He (Robertson) tried and tried and it wasn't working. I said you're gonna have to sweep her throat and so he turned her around and I just swept her throat. iI caused her to gag and whatever it was dislodged and went down."

At that moment Green was saved. Her teachers and school officer became heroes, but Krienke and her colleagues say the real heroin is Aaliyah Green.

"She never cried. She was a brave little girl and it all just turned out so good and we're all just so thankful."

On May 16, 2018, the teachers were recognized for their actions and awarded the Sheriff's Star Award.

6 ideas for rainy summer days

Summer vacation means spending time outdoors and enjoying sunny skies. But not every day will be sunny and clear. For those banking on spending long summer days outside, rainy days can put a quick damper on those plans. However, poor weather doesnÕt have to diminish all of the fun. The following are some go-to ideas that can keep summer vacationers happy even when the rain is falling.

1. Visit area museums. It's probably been a while since youÕve looked at the sights in your hometown, and rainy summer days provide the perfect opportunity to take them in from a tourist's perspective. If you are away from home when the rain starts to fall, inquire about any unique indoor activities the area has to offer. Hotel lobbies and concierge offices typically have lots of brochures advertising nearby activities.

2. Do a scavenger hunt. Make up clues and hide a prize to be discovered at the end of the hunt.

Scavenger hunts can keep children or adults occupied until the rains subside.

3. Have an indoor campout. If weather cancels your plans to camp out under the stars, pitch your tent indoors and camp under the ceiling. Tell scary stories and tinker with s'mores recipes to make your indoor camping seem more like the real thing.

4. Stock up on board games. Board games are the original boredom-busters. They're portable, and they can quickly turn a rainy day into something much more tolerable. Up the ante and have winners from each game compete against one another in a game of a different type.

5. Head to the theater. Catch that summer action flick or curl up next to a sweetheart and watch the latest romantic comedy. Some movie theaters even offer discount tickets at certain times during the summer.

6. Don't be afraid of the rain. Unless you're a certain witch with a wicked streak, chances are you will not melt in the rain. Summer rain actually can be refreshing, so put on your rain jacket and enjoy a stroll or even find a way to have fun in the rain. It's alright to get messy during a rainy day volleyball or football game. Just be sure to run inside the moment you see any lightning.

FFA Going STRONG

Coming Events

New Diana FFA members have been very busy this spring and their activities will continue throughout the summer . With both the Horse and Forestry teams advancing to state and with six trap shooters competing in the state competition ,many miles were travelled and a lot of hours were spent preparing for the competitors. Additionally, summer leadership training for officers will take place at the State FFA Convention and two members will compete in the Texas FFA Finals Rodeo.

July 9-12 Speed and Strength Camps 8AM

HORSE JUDGING The Horse judging team consisting of Carson Click,Libby Martin,Callie Click and Lucky Bilbrey competed at nine different events this spring and emerged as Area VI Champions. They traveled to Lubbock for the State event ,marking the third time to compete at state for Carson Click and bringing to conclusion a season that included a third place finish at Houston and a Reserve Championship at NCTC. Lucky Bilbrey commented that “ the level of competition is incredible and I give a lot of credit to our team leader Carson Click for sharing his knowledge. We probably drove Mr. Bacon crazy with all the miles we spent in the truck.”

FORESTRY TEAM The Forestry team had a record eleven members trying out for spots on the team and when the dust cleared Carson Willeford,Sam Benson,Jared Garrett,and Caleb Blakely traveled to Nacogdoches to compete in the State Woodland Clinic. To get there,the team captured the championship for the Upshur-Gregg Soil and Water Conservation District ,with Carson Photo of Ag Forestry Team; State Forestry : Caleb Blakely,Sam as the 2nd high individual and Sam Benson,Blane Hawkins,Carson Willeford,Ryan Vierra,Jared Garrett. and Jared in the Top 10. At the state contest Carson finished in a tie for ninth high individual and the team finished in the Top 20.Carson states that “ I am really excited for next year and I think we can compete for a state championship.Mr. Duncan tries to get us to believe we can do it and we are starting to think that way ourselves”

TRAP SHOOTING Shooting coach Johnny Willeford entered six shooters in the State Ag Clays in San Antonio. Sam Benson,Jared Garrett,Chloe Streetman,Conor Walton,Jaymin Newton,and Kolten Bowlden competed in sporting clays and trap and were joined by Kam Dugan and Dalton Burkes for the Texas State Rifle Association Youth Championships. The team of Benson,Burkes,Dugan,and Bowlden finished fourth in the TSRA Shoot ,combining two days of trap and sporting clays.Sam Benson commented that “The biggest challenge for me is to refocus if I miss a target. At the state level there's not much room for mistakes because of the competition,and we all are taught to look forward rather than behind.”

Lucky Bilbrey and Rachel Johnston will be receiving the Lone Star Degree as well,while members Colton Howard and Brady Howard will compete in the Texas FFA Rodeo in the Team Roping event. Brady will also be mounting in the Saddle Bronc competition as they hope to advance to the Final Round for Tuesday night.

All in all,the chapter enjoyed a successful run this spring and looks forward to an exciting summer.

Eagles Baseball

Eagle Baseball 2018 concluded Saturday, May 12 at ETBU’s Wood Field with a loss to Hughes Springs in the Region 2 Area round of the playoffs. Baseball team finished 18-11 overall and 10-4 in 16AAA finishing as the 3rd place team behind eventual State Champions Beckville and Region 2 Finalists White Oak. We advanced to the playoffs and defeated Sabine in a series sweep (10-0, 15-3) in the Bi-District round to advance to the Area Round to face Hughes Springs.

This was a seasons of ups and downs. The very young Eagles team had some quality wins against quality opponents this seasons with wins against Harmony, Hardin Jefferson, Pleasant Grove and District Rival White Oak (ranked 10th). Of course, we had some disappointing losses to Harleton and Hughes Springs during Spring Break and to Paris Chisum in the Queen City Classic where we wasted an outstanding pitching outing by Sophomore Cade Medlin.

Nonetheless, there was much to be proud of Jacob Burton and build on. We had 3 no-hitters, made it out of a tough district to advance to playoffs, advanced to the Area Round, placed 7 players on the AllDistrict team and 1 on the All-State team, 2 selected to the FCA Heart of a Champion All-Star Game and one selected to the THSBCA All-Star game played at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Jacob Burton will continue playing baseball at the University of Arkansas. Jacob will finish his career with 377 K’s in 4 years with 1.35 career ERA his ERA for 2018 was .995. A stand out High School Career. Of course we will also miss 16AAA 1st All-District Cole Willeford and Jackson Sampson. This was a team that started 6 sophomores that had significant contributions and will all be back along with Seniors Landon Ferguson and Blake Duncan and a JV that went 20-4.

Congrats to Jacob Burton and Austin Green for earning 16AAA Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year respectively. In addition to, Cole Willeford and Addison Holt for making the 16AAA All-District First Team. Along with, Cade Medlin, Isaiah Martinez and Cody Stanley for earning 16AAA 2nd team honors. The future is bright.

2018 New Diana

This year New Diana Softball’s overall record was 23-3-1. Early in the season, New Diana tied Longview in the last minute with a two run homerun by Madi Brown, giving the Lady Eagles their only tie of the season. Bouncing back with 3 straight wins against Alba Golden, Queen City, and Henderson, the Lady Eagles took their first loss of the season to Jacksonville High School in the Whitehouse tournament before opening up in district play. The girls answered back from that loss in Whitehouse with 15 straight wins in which they went 14-0 to become the undefeated district champions of District 16-3A.

The Lady Eagles earned a number 1 seed in the Region 2 bracket facing Troup High School for their Bi-District playoff game. The Lady Eagles advanced to the Area round after defeating Troup 15-0. In their Area matchup, the Lady Eagles matched up with Redwater High School where the Eagles extended their winning streak to 18 games straight. The Lady Eagles took game one 5-2 in Pine Tree, and had a memorable come from behind win in the 7th inning against Redwater in Paris. The Lady Eagles scored 7 runs in the seventh inning coming back from a 5-1 deficit to advance to the Regional Quarterfinals round. The 3rd round of the playoffs ended the Lady Eagles’ win streak as they faced up against New Boston who ended up losing to Hughes Springs in the 5th round.

The Lady Eagles continued to improve throughout the last 4 years as they advanced in their playoff runs. The girls worked extremely hard and played together all season to make the season what it was. In District 16-3A, Heather Zook, P, earned All-District MVP, Kylie Easterling earned Catcher of the Year, Kloe Meador earned 1st team All-District first baseman, Brooklynn Manes earned 1st team All-District third baseman for the 4th year straight, Madi Brown earned 1st team All-District shortstop and led the team in Homeruns (10), Joelle Newton earned 1st team All-District Utility Player, Becca Bates, Shelby Meshell, Mckenna Manes all earned 2nd Team All-District Outfielders, and Karly Meshell earned All-District Honorable Mention 2nd Base. Joelle Newton and Heather Zook also earned Academic All-District.

The seniors will be missed next year, but have set the path for the underclassmen that follow them. Becca Bates signed in the spring and will continue her softball career with Labette Community College. Once again, the girls worked extremely hard throughout the season and the Seniors, Becca Bates, Kylie Easterling, Brooklynn Manes, Kloe Meador, and Shelby Meshell, leave their mark with the program.

This year we only had two BIM classes, compared to five classes in previous years, hence a lower number of certified students (24 students in 2017 and 25 in 2016). This was also our first year to test in the latest, Office 2016 environment. Overall, this has been a year full of adventure and challenge for our Microsoft Office scholars. Many students have demonstrated the resolve to prepare, and most of them have passed this final certification test, securing an hour of college credit (see info about it here) in addition to a valuable resume entry. Our past students have shared their stories of quality job offers, based on this certification alone.

It’s no secret that we are living in the digital age. No one is immune from the effects, even my 5 year old granddaughter uses a tablet to stay entertained and connected. I am not indicating that this transition is a negative thing, in fact, it is very promising for the school nutrition industry.

Mobile devices like tablets and smartphones will allow school nutrition professionals to attain greater efficiency by using them in inventory functions, lunch menus and much, much more.

New Diana Cafeteria is excited to announce that in 20182019 school year, we are transitioning to a new meal software program call Schoolcafe. This software will replace Lunch Money Now and Meal App Now. Schoolcafe will be the one tablet or smartphone app for all of your cafeteria needs! If a mom receives a phone call from her child that there is no money left in their school account, she can rectify the situation immediately, no matter where she is. Even while on the go, parents will have peace of mind knowing their student will have lunch today.

Seeing the meal options available to their child each day is a benefit parents can reap by accessing the online menu.

Parents can also set up account restrictions and automatic payments. These functionalities ensure that the parent is in control.

Make the most of a visit to the zoo A trip to the zoo is a great way to enjoy an afternoon as a family. Visiting the zoo involves spending time in the great outdoors and introduces adults and children to non-native animals and their habitats.

Today's zoos are committed to conservation efforts, educational pursuits and breeding animals particularly endangered species to replenish their numbers. Many animal exhibits seek to replicate natural environments as much as possible so animals are as healthy and happy as they would be in the wild.

North America is home to a variety of zoos, including the Calgary Zoo, the Toronto Zoo, the San Diego Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, and the Central Park Zoo. According to CBS Local, The Bronx Zoo, located in a borough of New York City, is the largest zoo in the United States. The Bronx Zoo encompasses 265 acres and features 4,000 animals.

Even though a trip to the zoo can seem easy enough, there are ways to improve a visit and make the most of time spent seeing and learning about the animals that live there.

• Start your trip before you get to the zoo. Find out which animals are featured at the zoo and do some research prior to your visit. While at the zoo, enjoy observing the animals and putting your newfound knowledge to use.

• Explore special features. Plan to visit the zoo on a day when there is a special exhibit or hands-on learning experience, such as a feeding or meet-andgreet with animals.

• Plan ahead. Visit the zoo website to print a map and get schedules so you don't waste any time looking for exhibits.

• Mimic the animals. Children can tour the zoo while imitating the sounds and movements of the animals they see. This will make the day more entertaining and reinforce lessons.

Watermelon Facts

Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they're most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores year-round. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench ones curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board.

• Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center.

• An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings.

• Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August.

• Seedless watermelons contain small, white seeds. These are actually seed coats that didn't fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It's the triploid that produces seedless watermelons.

• Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated.

• Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they're the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens.
