American Chianina Association – University of Illlinois Sire Test 2020

T

he American Chianina Association - University of Illinois Sire Test is now underway. Ten bulls have been nominated for the test and breeding of the cows will take place in December. Progeny will be harvested in the fall of 2021 and extensive data will be collected on the entire calf crop. The information collected from this sire test will not only benefit the American Chianina Association, but also the individual breeders of these bulls. The data will be invaluable to the continued success of Chainina genetics. More information on the test will be shared as the program continues. Thanks to the breeders listed below for investing not only in the future of their operations, but in the genetic data that will help move the American Chianina Association forward.

he flurry of state fairs has wound down, the heat has finally broken, calves are being weaned, calf sales are cranking up, and combines are moving steadily through fields of corn and soybeans. Autumn has arrived!

Chianina and Chiangus cattle have been well represented at both junior and open shows all across the country. I would like to highlight the Indiana Chianina Association for their ingenuity and creativity. Beginning with the 2019 Indiana State Fair, a two division (Chiangus and Chianina) show was held. Additionally, a Chi Feeder Calf Show was included. A two division show was also offered for the first time at the 2018 Hoosier Beef Congress. Beginning at the 2020 Indiana State Fair, a two divisions (Chiangus and Chianina) will also be held in the junior show.

Additionally, I encourage other state associations to follow suit, work with their state fair boards and entry departments, and work to expand your state fair shows. In addition to supporting and promoting Chianina and Chiangus genetics, offering two divisions at your state fair doubles the marketing options for breeders and adds value to your calf crop.

I applaud the vision and foresight of the Indiana Chianina Association. Well done!!!

The ACA Board of Directors held our fall board meeting in September this year. Our rationale was to hold the meeting earlier, giving us more time between it and the Louisville meeting. The agenda was packed and the meeting was extremely productive.

Heather reported on the upcoming National Junior Heifer Shows. Next year we’ll be “Living on Lima Time”, June 28 through July 4, in Lima, Ohio. Tentatively, the next four NJHS are slated for Chickasaw, OK in 2021, Grand Island, NE in 2022, Louisville, KY in 2023, and the new facility in Kansas City in 2024.

Jennifer reported that we have begun registering some fullblood cattle that originated in Taiwan. Each of these cattle have been registered after confirming their Italian parentage and tracing the pedigree back to Italian fullbloods. It’s exciting to learn that a new infusion of fresh genetic matter may become available!

Larry Garrett has hit the ground running in his first year serving on the board and is spearheading a committee to

plan another Egg Extravaganza. For those whom may be unfamiliar with the ACA Egg Extravaganza, high quality embryo packages of all breed and composite types are donated by breeders. Syndicates are formed to purchase the embryo packages. Money raised from the auction will be held in escrow by the ACA. The auction is tentatively being planned to take place during the 2020 NJHS. The embryos will be transferred for calves born during the fall of 2021 or spring of 2022. A special show will be held in conjunction with the 2022 National Show for calves born from these transfers. Half of the money raised from the auction will be paid back as premiums; the other half could be used by the ACA for breed promotion, marketing, and member services. Stay tuned for more information.

During the annual meeting, held in Louisville, awards will be presented for All Americans, as well as the Show Heifers and Bulls (both Chiangus and Chianina) of the Year. These cattle have not received much recognition in the past few years; that won’t be the case in 2019.

Ten bulls have been nominated for the ACA – University of Illinois ACA Sire Test, in addition to two “benchmark” sires.

Twenty cows will be bred artificially to each of the bulls on December 12 and 13 of this year. The resulting progeny will be harvested in the fall of 2021. Extensive data will be collected on the entire calf crop, including birth date, gestation length, sex, birth weight, calving ease score, color, horned/ polled/scurred status, weaning weight, docility, feedlot ADG, feedlot Dry Matter Intake (DMI), feed efficiency, yearling weight, final weight, Hot Carcass Weight (HCW), back fat, Rib Eye Area (REA), KPH fat, Yield Grade (YG), marbling, Quality Grade (QG).

For the bulls that participate in the Sire Test, there will be lots of benefits. It is unlikely that a single bull will emerge as the clear leader in every category. However, it’s very likely that one or more bulls will be identified as calving ease sires, growth sires and/or carcass sires. Additionally, because we’re incorporating two “benchmark” sires in the test (both of whom are high use, high accuracy sires) the accuracies of the bulls in the Sire Test will increase significantly. A complete listing is found on page XX of this issue of the ACJ, identifying the bulls participating in the Sire Test, as well as their owners.

Congratulations to these forward thinking breeders for participating in the ACA – University of Illinois ACA Sire Test!

The Board of Directors faced a big challenge this year when a diligent effort was made to host a National Sale. The intention was to offer 30 lots; 20 of which would be live, with 10 genetic lots. The sale would be held in conjunction with the national show in Louisville.

All of the preliminary arrangements had been worked out; we just needed the cattle. A consignment deadline of September 1 was necessary in order to promote and market the sale. Unfortunately, the decision was made to cancel the sale, due to a lack of interest. While this decision was regrettable, it was undoubtedly the right thing to do. Online sales have presented as significant challenge to association-sponsored marketing efforts.

We continue to seek ways to expand our junior program and to assist breeders who merchandise junior projects. Therefore, an All American Junior Heifer Points Program was initiated, beginning in 2019. Points will be accepted from all junior heifer shows held at state shows, state fairs, state expos, NJHS, AK-SAR-BEN, World Beef Expo, NAILE, Denver, and Fort Worth. Additionally, two new junior shows are being planned for 2020: the Eastern and Western Region Chianina / Chiangus Junior Heifer Shows. The East Region show will be held in conjunction with the Kentucky State Fair in 2020, and will be held in conjunction with the Indiana State Fair in 2021. The West Region show will be held in conjunction with the Nebraska State Fair in 2020.

Details will be forthcoming. When marketing show heifer prospects, be sure to talk about the new All American Junior Points Program, and the opportunity to participate in the Regional Junior Heifer Shows.

(Note: participation is not limited to only one regional show.)

The ACA is exploring the development of a DNA department, to assist members in submitting samples and getting the results processed and posted. Although we’re in the preliminary stages, this should be a big benefit to members.

An ACA Membership Survey is in the works. This survey will provide members an opportunity to share their input with the board of directors and provide some guidance and direction for the coming years.

Be on the lookout for an e-blast that will direct you to the Qualtrics site. We hope that everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to share their input.

Our “next big thing” is the National Show in Louisville. You’ll want to schedule a trip to Louisville and participate in as many of the activ-

ities as possible. Besides the junior and open shows, all three boards will convene, the Auxiliary Luncheon is on Monday, along with the “Stall Crawl” that evening. The annual membership meeting will take place on Tuesday, and silent and live auctions will be held to benefit the work of the boards.

Make plans to attend the ACA Annual Membership Meeting for an up-to-date snapshot of your association, as well as plans for the future. National awards will be presented including the ACA Breeder of the Year, Commercial Cattleman of the Year, Chianina Promoter of the Year, 40 year Breeders, as well as the All-American and Show Animal of the Year Awards. Results from the membership survey will be presented. Stop by the ACA booth frequently to stay on top of the schedule and to pick up your copy of the program for the junior and open shows.

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the tremendous contribution made by the ACA Board of Directors. This is an extremely hardworking, selfless, dedicated group of individuals; each of whom have the very best interests of the association at heart and in mind. This is a very cohesive board that is very willing to spend a lot of time, energy and personal resources to advance the work of the Association.

Individual members of the ACA Board don’t always agree with each other on every issue. However, each member contributes his own talents, skills, interests and passion to face the big issues and make the tough decisions. This is a responsibility that we don’t take lightly, and we carefully consider the members thawhot will be impacted by each decision and its alternatives.

The Board continues to look for ways to improve the profitability of the Association, expand member services, increase marketing strategies, expand promotional activities and add value to cattle with documented Chianina and Chiangus genetics. That’s the role of a breed association. We do that … and a whole lot more. I hope that when you see your board members, you’ll take time to thank them for their service.

The ACA is only as strong as its members, its breeders and its leadership. We’re each on our personal journey, pursuing our own dreams, striving to achieve our own goals, supporting our own families. But yet, we’re all in this together. Collectively, we can accomplish more by working as a team. It’s not always the easiest or shortest path; but we’re stronger as a team than as a bunch of individuals.

That’s the way I see it.

We Are What We Are!

W

hen it comes to mating cattle, we are all looking for that one ingredient to make our whole recipe better. The Chianina breed is that ingredient. Chianina is a breed of hardy, feed efficient cattle that are highly maternal with excellent carcass traits. Admittedly, the low registrable percentage requirements lead some people to believe the breed lacks credibility. In reality, Chianina breeders have created a far superior product through harnessing the greatest genetics available across multiple breeds. By combining these genes with our own highly desirable traits, our membership has created an elite product that can quickly adapt and compete with changing markets and show ring trends. This adaptability means we can and should lead the industry across all sectors of beef production, in addition to the show ring.

The ACA Board of Directors is taking steps to help improve predictability by incorporating a sire test and genetically enhanced EPDs with 50K genomic testing. Genetic predictability will help every breeder. Whether it be a breeder looking to add performance, mating a virgin heifer, or adding milk, the more accurate EPDs will be an indicator of potential breeding decisions to make in the coming breeding seasons.

The Supreme heifer at Louisville may look flawless to most, but there is always room for improvement. Having the tools to phenotypically and genetically improve upon an already outstanding product will move us even farther ahead of the competition.

The adaptability of the breed leaves few limitations on the breeder. Under the umbrella of the ACA, you will find full blood, purebred, ChiAngus, Red ChiAngus, ChiFord, and Percentage Chianina. This creates unlimited avenues of production, so breeders can pursue any market we choose. When looking at the benefits the breed can offer, we see its positive influence across every sector of the cattle industry. The club calf breeder knows the Chianina influence will offer more look and growth potential with more desirable carcass traits. The show heifer producer understands the advantages Chianina genetics offer in skeletal structure, foot composition, and higher quality cows when put in production. Seed stock producers know well the added value Chianina influence has for increased longevity, virility, and vigorous calves. Feeder cattle producers benefit from the feed efficiency, lower yield grade and extra red meat.

Commercial producers appreciate the tight udders, added butterfat milk and longevity.

Pasture to plate operations find the breed’s worth in a tasty product with high-end consumer appeal. We can produce a registered Chianina with half a percent or one hundred percent, but the real determination of the breed’s worth is how we incorporate it into our own programs.

Sure, even with all the advantages the breed provides, the detractors will still say we don’t have a lot to offer — or shouldn’t be considered a breed, because the benchmark for entering the national Chianina show ring is 6.25 percent. But we breeders need to embrace the fact that We Are What We Are: a multifaceted breed that can adapt and grow at a faster rate due to a vast genetic pool with highly valuable traits.

My challenge to the breed and the breeders is: don’t forget what we are! The standard is 6.25%, and so many of us are breeding for that elite 6.25% animal. At that, we are as competitive as any breed in any supreme row or fat steer show. Let’s get that competitive at 12.5%, or 25%, and use the full spectrum of what the breed has to offer to open new avenues of revenue through seed stock markets, meat markets, and across the entire beef industry. Don’t forget; we have the Chianina Advantage!

Fall Time Means Louisville By: Tatum Miller, At Large Director

H

ello everyone. My name is Tatum Miller and I am from Big Spring, Texas. I am currently a freshman at Texas Tech University, where I am studying animal science and nursing. I have grown up in a family that is highly active in the Chiangus cattle industry, which is what sparked my interest in the AJCA. As a new junior board member, I am excited to give back to the association that I believe is one of the best in the industry. I am so glad that I decided to run for the junior board and blessed to have received a spot on it. The junior members in the Chi association are some of the most passionate and determined showmen I know, and I can’t wait to serve them as a junior board member.

Though it seems like we have just attended our amazing national junior show, the summer has come and gone, which not only means that we are trading in our short-sleeved show shirts for long sleeves and polo sweaters, but we are also getting ready for some keenly awaited shows in the industry. With the NAILE approaching, we are hoping for a great turnout in the amount of junior Chi members attending. Remember, you could be earning points for the newly implemented junior All-American program, so get your cattle in that show ring!

I would also like to remind all junior members attending the NAILE to please attend our membership meeting that will be taking place in Louisville on November 16th. I am looking forward to helping make this year one of the best yet for this association, and I hope to see you all soon in Louisville.

Livin’ for Louisville By: Savannah Garrett, Secretary

H

ey y’all, I’m Savannah Garrett and I am currently your secretary on the American Junior Chianina Board! My favorite time of the year is coming up and that is when I get to take a break off of school and go down to Louisville for the show of the year, NAILE. Down in Louisville is where you get to walk through the Freedom Hall walkway, meet new friends, and see some of the best cattle in the nation. We all know it is a busy time from the time we arrive to the second we leave, but if you ever have some downtime and want to go do something, come join us, your American Junior Chianina Board. We would love to be able to meet all of the juniors who make up our breed.

We will be having our annual AJCA Exhibitor meeting on Saturday, November 16 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. It is a chance for all of us to meet all of the exhibitors that bring life to our breed. This meeting is where you will be able to tell us how you feel the Chianina breed has improved or if we need to improvise new ideas. Obviously you guys are what we think of when we

have our meetings and to help us with that we would love some input and help. Let’s keep improving the breed we all share a passion for!

The Chianina program is trying to improve what goes on for the kids and for the cattle breed itself. This year there have been some new additions to the program and one of them is the All-American Program. The All- American Program is a pointbased program that rewards exhibitors and cattle that have been shown throughout the year. Points are tabulated from all major shows, state fairs and state shows. There will be some awesome awards at the end of the season, so get out there an exhibit your animals!

I hope you guys have a great time getting ready for Louisville and we’ll see you there!

The AJCA Junior Board is making plans for an exciting and fun raffle to help raise funds for the 2020 National Junior Heifer Show in Lima, Ohio.

Items are being secured as we speak and we will kick off our raffle fund raiser at Louisville in November. Be sure to catch up with a junior board member to get your tickets! A

s I sit here typing this news from the road it is 36 degrees and raining and supposed to switch to snow as the day goes by! I don’t know about you but I am not ready for the snow! Cooler weather yes, but not the snow! Some places around us could get 12 to 24 inches while we are expecting 3 to 14 inches depending on which channel you watch the forecast on! It has been a challenging year across the U.S. to say the least.

I have put 6,750 miles on since the last issue! This includes a couple state fairs and numerous herd visits in Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri. I have seen Chi cattle from low percentage to half bloods to full bloods in the last few months and to say the hospitality at each and every place I have been is great would be an understatement! Thank you to everyone who has taken time from your very busy days and hectic schedules to show me around through your operations!

The Chi cattle I have seen over the past few months have been outstanding. If you are in the market for any Chi genetics, please let me know. Whether you’re looking for replacement heifers, herd bulls or your families next show steer or heifer, I have probably crossed paths with something that might work! I have been through numerous sale offerings and visited with breeders about the ACA

incentive program for registered Chi steers, as well as promoting the new incentive program for Chi heifers. Be sure to talk to an ACA staff member or board member for more information, or watch the Journal for more on the heifer program in the coming months.

Just a quick story about my travels. I visited Keith & Dana Schrick of Schrick Land and Cattle in Texas – wow, did I learn a lot! My herd visit started at the family owned liquor store with a tour from Dana.

She is like an encyclopedia when it comes to where all the whiskeys, wine and everything in between are made and the stories on each brand. It’s interesting to say the least! Then I was off with Keith to look at cows. They raise low percentage to full blood Chianina. It’s a very young and outstanding herd. After the tour of four pastures with one of those pastures just being full bloods, we headed back to town to pick up Dana for a late lunch. She hoped in the vehicle and says, “Well Dustin, did you like the white cows or the black cows better?”

I didn’t miss a beat and said well I liked the black cows the best! I quickly learned that was the wrong thing to say! So I changed my answer to well I was very intrigued by the white cows!

I look forwarding to meeting more members at the next sale or in Louisville at the National Show!

ummer has come to an end and harvest is approaching quickly. That means one thing…Louisville is right around the corner. I hope everyone is making plans to attend the N.A.I.L.E. The ACA has been working very hard to make this an outstanding event.

Ladies, I hope you are all planning on attending our Ladies Luncheon. The “Come As You Are Luncheon” will be on Monday, November 18 at 11:30 am. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. We need to get as many ladies as we can involved, so please try and stop by. We always have a great time and it’s nice to get away from the barn for a little while.

Also, in this issue are the guidelines for Chi Lady of the Year. We wanted to give more women the opportunity to be nominated even if they cannot make it to Louisville. The Chi Lady of the Year is a lady who has been active in Chi Cattle, works with the youth and is involved in her community. Please remember whoever is nominated does not have to be present at Louisville. Please email your nominations to jessicalcheesman@ gmail.com before November 1, 2019.

The Silent Auction is our only fund raiser for the year, so please stop by the booth and see all the items up for bids. Last year we had a tremendous turnout and I am hoping we have an even bigger auction this year. All proceeds from the Silent Auction will go towards funding the Queen throughout the year. I am sure there will be something that you cannot live without!

Each year at Louisville the Ladies Auxiliary selects an outstanding Lady who has been active in the Chianina breed, works with youth and is active in her community.

We know not everyone travels to the National Show in Louisville in November, so we would like to have nominations for ladies who work hard in their communities, who you feel deserve this award of Chi Lady of the Year.

All you have to do is submit a letter telling why this Lady deserves this award. Be sure to tell about her and her accomplishments.

The winner will be selected at the Ladies Luncheon during Louisville. Again, the Lady does not have to be present at Louisville to win this award. Letters or emails must be dated by November 1, 2019.

Bulletin Reminder to submit results from Open & Junior Chianina Shows for AllAmerican Points

Just a reminder to please submit results from all open and junior Chianina shows at state fairs and state shows from this summer so they can be included in the All-American points tallies. All results should be sent to Heather Counts, Director of Shows & Activities. You may submit them via email to heather@chicattle.org or by mail to the ACA office. Results should include all class, division and grand & reserve champion placings, animal names, registration numbers, birthdates and owners.

Genetic Testing Reminders

Before submitting registrations to the ACA, please note the following policies regarding Genetics Testing & DNA Info: • All ACA registered bulls born after January 1, 2017 must be DNA parent verified before their progeny can be registered.

• All ACA registered natural calves born after January 1, 2019 out of a cow that is fifteen years of age or older at birth of the calf must be DNA parent verified.

• AI Sires & Donor dams for embryo calves must have genetic testing and DNA parentage on file before calves will be registered.

In Memory – Bill Wilson

William (Bill) Wilson, 77, of Cloverdale, Ind., passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019.

Bill was born in Champaign, Ill., on November 21, 1941, the son of Berl and Dorothy (Brewer) Wilson. He attended Champaign schools and went on to the University of Illi-

nois to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. Bill loved the cattle business from 4-H on. He and his family are the owners of Wilson Cattle Company, Cloverdale, Ind. Bill was a member of the American Angus Association and was elected to serve on the Board of Directors where he was then elected in 1997 to serve as President of the American Angus Association. He also was very active in the Indiana Angus Association where he also held several offices going on to be elected to serve as the state President. Bill was also noted as one of the top judges in the livestock industry having judged many national, state and county shows throughout the United States plus major shows in Canada and Zimbabwe. He was also noted for showing many Grand Champions at the National and State level, on being the first exhibitor to show three National Western Stock Show, (Denver, Colorado) Grand Champion Bulls of three different breeds (Angus, Charolais and Shorthorn) in same year, 1988. Bill also was inducted in September 2000 to the Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame sponsored by Purdue University.

Bill leaves his wife Priscilla and son Chad to carry on. He now joins his sister Jeanette Smith and brother-in-law Jim, another brother-in-law Jim “Turp” Gannaway and daughter Lori Green. He is survived by sister Mary Lou Gannaway.

Visitation and services were held on August 30, 2019 at the Wilson Cattle Farm.

In Memory – Lucas Regula

Lucas James Regula was a man who was loyal to his core, always with a plan and quick with a witty response. He loved his family and the cattle industry.

Lucas James Regula, 33, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 30, 2019. Lucas was born on May

8, 1986 in Lima, Ohio, along with his twin sister, Lindsey, to Rick and Deb Regula. Lucas met Allison Agle in college and they married on Dec. 31, 2010. In Allison, he found his best friend, someone who challenged him and someone who loved cattle as much as he did. In 2015, Lucas and Allison welcomed their daughter Autumn Rose. Autumn inherited Lucas’ out-going spirit, strong will and penchant for an exacting wardrobe. While their time together was short, they enjoyed growing together as a family and their strong bond and tenacity to persevere continues.

Lucas is survived by his wife and daughter; parents; three sisters, Brandi (Bryan) Zofkie, Lindsey (Shaun) Whetstone, and Brittani (Jake) McEvoy; grandparents, Forest and June Sawmiller, Raymond Regula; family friend and neighbor, Robert Engel; in-laws Bob and Peggy Agle, Emily (Dominic) DePompei, John and Betty Baird; as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins. Nieces and nephews who dearly loved Uncle Luke include Canaan and Vaida James Zofkie, Lorelai and his Godson, Jase Whetstone; Jennings McEvoy, and Leo and Vincent DePompei.

Lucas attended Wapakoneta High School where he wrestled and was a member of the Wapakoneta FFA. He graduated from The Ohio State University with an animal science degree and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and the OSU Livestock Judging Team.

Lucas was passionate about his career, working for Elanco Animal Health for more than ten years in roles that took him from Greenfield, Ind. to the feedyards in Garden City, Kan. to the stocker cattle in Lebanon, Tenn. He was an agile learner and respected leader. Many of Lucas’ best times were spent with Elanco colleagues and customers where he strived to leave things better than how he found them.

Lucas loved cattle. He was particularly fond

of high-quality show cattle and spent many hours preparing, showing and judging cattle.

Luke’s pride-and-joy was his first vehicle, a metallic jade green ’79 Ford F250 pickup that he rebuilt with his dad.

Lucas remained grateful and focused on what matters throughout his life and cancer battle. While Lucas left us much sooner than we wanted, we know that cancer can’t stop his impact on this world. His impact touched many, shaping who they are and driving them to make a positive difference. And that’s exactly how his impact continues.

Memorial service were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 302 E. Pearl St., Wapakoneta, with Rev. Doug Pretorius officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ohio State University Foundation noting “Lucas Regula” at giveto.osu.edu (where 100% will fund brain cancer research at The James Cancer Hospital) or Still Kickin, a nonprofit organization founded by Nora McInerny after her husband passed away from brain cancer that helps awesome people going through awful things.

American Chianina Association Announces New Directors to Board

Each year the ACA elects four members to the ACA Board of Directors. Nomination forms are due in September with ballots mailed in October.

This year, there were 4 nominees running for the 4 positions up for election, therefore an election was not necessary and the new board members will be sworn in at the board meeting in Louisville in November.

Elected to serve a three-year term starting in November are: • Segayle Foster. Texas – Southwest Region • Ken Culp III, Kentucky – At Large • Tyler Winegardner, Ohio – At Large • Derek Evans, Kentucky – At Large Bios and information on the nominees will be included in the next issue of the ACJ.

Congratulations to these four members and we look forward to having them serve the membership for the next three years.

ACA State Junior Association Program Premise: As the Chianina breed is extremely influential in the show ring, the ACA should endeavor to strengthen and expand the Junior Program at both the state and national levels.

Strengthening and expanding the ACA’s Junior Program will benefit Chianina breeders by expanding marketing efforts, improving demand for quality show prospects, and increasing the number of Chianina cattle being sold and exhibited across the nation.

Purpose: To strengthen and build the American Chianina Association and the American Junior Chianina Association at the grassroots level.

Action Step: Each state is encouraged to develop a state junior Chianina Association.

Proposal – Developing State Junior Chianina Associations • Limit of one junior association per state (or a state may join a multi-state group.)

• Each junior association should adopt bylaws (a template is provided by the ACA.) • Each junior association must have at least four officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). Additional officers are optional.

• Each junior association must have at least two meetings each year, and the meetings must be held in different months.

Minutes must be sent to the ACA Director of Shows and Youth Activities, following the meeting.

• (State) Junior Board members will serve two-year terms.

• Each state junior association must send the names and contact information of

their directors, officers and advisors to the ACA Director of Shows and Youth Activities

by April 1, annually (to be included in the Herd Book issue of the ACJ.)

Proposal – Expanding the ACA’s Junior Program by Hosting Regional Junior Shows Premise: In order to promote Chianina and Chiangus genetics and provide additional opportunities for youth to exhibit Chianina and Chiangus cattle, the ACA will coordinate at least two regional junior shows each year. (Initially, in order to save expenses, these regional junior shows could be held in conjunction with an established show or state fair.)

• Each show will be held in a different ACA region.

• Each regional show will be open to all AJCA members in good standing.

• AJCA members may participate in any and all regional shows.

• Regional shows should be self-sustaining.

• Regional shows will be coordinated by a committee. The committee will include the ACA Director of Shows and Youth Activities, the ACA Field Representative from that region, the ACA Board members and Jr. Board members from that region, and a state liaison (if necessary.)

Melroe Farms

…Making it work on the North Dakota Frontier

I

n the movie “Dances with Wolves,” John J. Dunbar (played by Kevin Costner) seeks permission from his commanding officer to ride across the frontier. “Why do you want to do that?” the officer inquired of Costner. “I’ve always wanted to see the frontier, sir; before it’s gone.”

I had a trip scheduled to South Dakota for the last week of July. I decided to add a couple of extra days and make a swing north, to visit Melroe Farms. Like Costner, I wanted to see it, before it was gone.

Steve had told me several times in the preceding months that he was planning to disperse. Steve and his brother, Scott, farm over 4,000 acres of cropland together. (This, in itself, is a full-time job for two men.) Scott, however, winters in Florida and has the irritating habit of calling Steve during a snow storm, when he’s calving, and reminding him how enjoyable it is to lay on the beach on warm sand.

At the 2019 NJHS in Des Moines, I told Steve of my travel plans, and asked if it might be possible to visit on August 1. Without a second thought, he told me to make plans to be there.

I hadn’t been to North Dakota since Schaeffer’s hosted the Junior National in Minot in 2002. I must confess that the drive through South Dakota and up to Gwinner was a lot greener and a lot wetter than I had expected. (This was due, in part, to the unseasonable wet year; but there are also a lot more lakes and ponds in that part of the country than I had realized.)

The drive into Gwinner was an eye-opener. Steve’s Grandfather and Great Uncle founded Melroe Manufacturing,

which eventually became the Bobcat Corporation, and still operates in Gwinner. The name “Melroe” is plastered everywhere. It’s obvious that the Melroe family is the pillar of the community.

I turned and drove a mile north to Steve and Barb’s home. What an extraordinary house! A sprawling ranch with four huge bedrooms (each larger than the living room in our home), formal living and dining rooms, a spacious family room with a built in bar, a recreation room, office, and a big patio that surrounds the in-ground swimming pool (which was filled in when Tyler was small.) It’s a house that’s designed for entertaining and providing first rate hospitality. And the hospitality was, indeed, terrific.

Steve shared an interesting piece of trivia. When Barry Goldwater was seeking the Republican nomination to run for President in 1964, he was an overnight guest in that home while we made a campaign swing through North Dakota.

Steve married Barb Arth, a registered nurse, in 1978. They purchased the house from Steve’s cousin and moved in. Barb spent most of her career as a surgical nurse. Today, she is the area hospital’s clinic Registered Nurse. Steve and Barb have two children; Tyler and Bethany.

Both graduated from South Dakota State University.

Tyler received his BS in Animal Sciences and his MS in Ruminant Nutrition. He is now the Beef Nutritionist for Hubbard Feeds. Tyler and Darah have two children; Jacey, aged 6, and Jaxen, aged 2. They live about 20 miles south of the ranch. Tyler’s job keeps him fully employed, although Steve did share that he tries to schedule big events involving the cows, (such as synchronizing, AIing, and weaning) to accommodate Tyler’s busy schedule and availability.

Bethany majored in Chemistry; earning her BS, MS, and Ph.D. She is the Chair of the Chemistry Department at Dakota Weslyan University in Mitchell, S.D. Bethany is married to Jeremy Lehrman, a Simmental breeder. (Jeremy also works for Elanco.) They have 2 children; Cash is 13, Emerson is 8. Bethany didn’t plan a career in chemistry. Her original career goal was to become an orthodontist. But she found that she really enjoyed chemistry, and made that her focus. (As a person with practically no aptitude for chemistry, that seems almost beyond belief, but I’m confident that it’s true.)

Early on August 1, the pasture tour began. We drove through three pastures of cows. Steve calved 130 cows and 30 heifers. The heifers were bred to MEFC Unanimous and KR Casino. There were cows that Steve pointed out, and cows that I asked about. The star-studded pastures were filled with cows sired by some of the most recognizable names in the Chiangus business. Advantage, Momentum, and Open Range, or their sons, sired the overwhelming majority of the cows.

Momentum’s Image and HIGG Encore were both running with cows and were impressive specimens.

Steve had begun creep feeding on July 1. However, the grass was lush, green and “afforded a good bite” so the calves hadn’t really started finding their way into the feeders quite yet. The pastures were all composed of native grasses and were not fertilized. Most have

Melroe Farms…continued never been disturbed by a plow. The pastures were filled with big, stout, strapping calves, alongside easy fleshing, sound, feminine, heavy milking cows with good udders.

Of the cows out on grass, all but two were nursing calves.

I thought that was an impressive record, but Steve shook his head with disgust. “I calved during three blizzards” he said. “The calves that I lost came early, were born at night and I wasn’t expecting them.” In all, Steve lost 12 calves. (Honestly, I think that most people who calved during the spring of 2019 in North Dakota would be pretty proud of a 90.625% calf crop; particularly when you’re taking care of the entire herd by yourself.)

Steve has bred or owned all or a piece of two Denver champion bulls, MEFC Unanimous and HIGG Encore. At the National Show in Louisville, Melroe Farms has exhibited two Reserve Grand Champions, MEFC Addicted, and JSC Advantage.

Their popular female, MEFC Jolene 618 2CA, was Grand Champion female, and was exhibited by Halley Becking.

Steve told me (only half joking) “My goal is to raise bulls. If we raise a champion heifer, we f**ked up.” What impressed me about the Melroe cows was their versatility. These were moderate, stout, sound, feminine females that, when mated correctly, could produce both outstanding bulls as well as highly productive females. Breeding for the show ring isn’t

Steve’s target, but he’s built a set of cows that are easy on the eyes and good enough for anyone’s breeding objective. What’s more, they’re built to last. With North Dakota winters, they have to be sound, hardy and productive in order to survive the long haul.

I appreciated the amount of time that Steve spent with me, and his patience in answering my myriad of questions. At the time that I’m writing this article, the Melroe herd is still intact. My understanding is that he’s negotiating with a Chiangus breeder to purchase all but a handful of the cows (with Steve keeping a half-dozen of his favorites). Steve will retain the heifers to breed next spring, and also has a couple of cooperator herds that will put in up to 60 Chiangus embryos for him in the spring of 2020. He’ll winter the bull calves and offer them for sale in the late winter / early spring.

Barb will retire in a year, and they’d like to do a little more traveling. He and Barb have visited Higgins Farms several times and like that part of the country. (“It’s easy to raise cattle in Tennessee” Steve joked. “They can calve outdoors year round.

They don’t have to make or feed nearly as much hay. They don’t have much mud.”) While that may (or may not) be (entirely) true; I won’t be surprised if Steve and Barb buy a vacation home somewhere in middle Tennessee.

Steve may be tired of calving cows during North Dakota blizzards, but I honestly don’t see him getting out entirely. (He closed on a deal to buy more pasture the week prior to my visit!) Steve has built Melroe Farms into one of the most successful Chiangus operations in the country. I’d encourage everyone to travel to Gwinner early this spring to buy a Melroe bull, while you still can; before they’re gone.

ACA Board of Directors Meeting Des Moines, IA • June 25, 2019 9:00 AM CST Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 9:19 a.m. CST. Culp, Sheets, Sexton, Garrett, Dunklau, Tracy, Higgins, Hurlbut, and Robb were present. Stoppel, Schrick, Gaddis, Walker, Winegardner were absent.

Officer’s Reports Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the April 5, May 2 and June 3 meeting were distributed. Garrett moved to approve the minutes, Sexton seconded. Motion carries.

Treasurer’s Report: Sheets moved to accept the treasurer’s report, Garrett seconded.

Staff Reports Heather Counts reported on the 2019 NJHS. 230 head of Chi cattle are checked in. 505 exhibitors checked in total, where roughly 160 were Chi exhibitors. The next ACJ deadline is July 10. She updated on some of the changes with the NAILE this fall and will be sending out an email to the membership shortly after the NJHS. Dustin Hurlbut reported on his travels. He has attended sales and made several herd visits in his region. He has several commitments for the National Sale and Sire Test.

Ryan Robb reported on ACJ ad sales and reorganizing state associations. He has made some herd visits and has helped obtain several new members.

Committee Reports Recognition: No report Jr & Youth Programs: The Adult board will meet with the Junior board prior to the fundraiser tomorrow night.

Performance and Genetic Abnormality: Tracy presented his findings from Neogen and how the ACA can provide a DNA service to its membership. It was referred back to the

committee for further investigation.

Building and Grounds: Culp updated on the roof repairs to the headquarters building.

The patch on the roof is now holding well but the contractor has not been able to complete the project yet due to the weather conditions.

The committee has decided to meet with three HVAC contractors at the September meeting and get quotes on updating and repairing the system. Discussion followed about repairing the parking lot.

2019 Sire Test Update: Robb presented the nomination from for the ACA-U of I Sire Test and a list of the current committed sires obtained so far.

Promotions, Benefits, & Marketing: The idea of an Egg Extravaganza event was discussed. Tentatively the sale would take place at the 2020 NJHS and the show would take place at the 2022 NAILE. Half of the proceeds would go toward Building and Grounds and Breed Promotion. The other half will be awarded to the champions.

There’s more than one way to grow a cattle operation.

nnovation and love of cattle run in the Esch family genes. It’s a foundation on which they’re building a nationwide branded-beef business: Oak Barn Beef. At the center is whirlwind Hannah Esch, a 21-year-old college junior with a contagious enthusiasm for the beef.

The University of Nebraska student was beef ambassador for the state in 2017 and 2018, traveling and talking to youth about the industry, and educating consumers about where their food comes from. She realized along the way there is a tremendous gap between producers and consumers, motivating her to look for new ways to bring the two groups closer together.

“There were people I spoke with surprised to hear that eggs and milk don’t both come from cows, because they are next to each other in the grocery store,” she says. “That was a real conversation, and it impressed on me how far we have to go in educating our consumers.”

The Oak Barn herd is bred using AI (artificial insemination) and genetically tested to ensure bulls they choose will produce good intramuscular marbling and tenderness.

“We are getting into a premium area comparable with Wagyu,” says Don of the beef program.

Hannah wanted to build direct connections to those consumers, leading her to the idea for a branded program.

She started it when she was 20 and hopes by the time she graduates in 2020, it will be a full-time business. It’s already on a growth trajectory that led to a doubling of beef harvested for the program between 2017 and 2018. Hannah says her dad, Don Esch, has his hands full keeping up with the growing consumer demand.

“How to have cattle ready and be able to supply customers 365 days a year is something we are still working on,” she explains. “We think if we spread our calving groups out throughout the year, it will help, but it’s hard to predict demand cycles when you’re such a new company. We have some ideas, including sourcing calves from other producers with the right genetics to transition us between calving times here at Oak Barn.”

Along with the art of supply, Hannah says Five Marys gave her insights into the challenges of shipping. She adds her mom, Linda Esch, is glad to know there’s help on the way.

“I know now we need to add a shipping and distribution center,” Hannah says. “That is probably our next step. Right now, there are Oak Barn Beef boxes in Mom’s office and in bedroom closets. Really, they’re stacked anywhere we can put them right now.”

She says they won’t just ship Oak Barn Beef products, either. The goal is to start to ship perishable products for other companies in the area, lowering their own input costs and providing a new revenue stream. That could start as early as 2020.

Hannah has already secured some of their start-up capital.

She recently won the University of Nebraska’s “New Venture Competition,” which came with an award of $25,000.

HARVEST FACILITY

In addition to a shipping and distribution center, Hannah says they need one more component to bring it all together: their own USDA harvest facility. It’s a big leap.

“The locker we use now is about 1 1/2 hours away,” Hannah says. “We dry-age the beef there for about 21 days. I tell people you dry-age beef the way you’d age a good cheese or wine. By giving it time to mature, the natural enzymes break down muscle tissue, making it more flavorful from the fat.”

She says their own facility would help them provide more jobs in the area and provide a processing point that could handle other farms’ livestock, as well.

Hannah adds her business acumen comes largely from the way she was raised.

“My parents are business owners, and I’ve seen all that goes into this from behind the scenes. I know what I’m getting into.

come tax season. My dad is the cattle guy. He knows what we need to do to make that side of things work.

“From the time I was a kid, if you asked my parents a question, they would take the time to explain things to you.

We’re all in this together. Which is a good thing, because we have a lot of boxes to fill with Oak Barn Beef.”

Chianina Cross:

Don Esch crosses an Italian breed of cattle, the Chianina, with Angus for a unique composite that works well in Nebraska’s environment. He says when he put a Chianina bull on his Angus cows, he saw 60 pounds better weaning weights and faster feed outs. They later discovered the cross provides an exceptionally tender carcass.

The family’s direct-market branded program, Oak Barn Beef, expects to harvest 60 head this year. All beef produced and sold through the program is grass-fed, creep-fed and grain finished. No implants or antibiotics are used in the program.

Who has been your mentor & why: There has been two guys who have been my biggest role models throughout my showing career.

Honestly if someone told me I had to pick just one of them I’d look at them and laugh because it is truly not possible. These two guys have

Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed: Make friends. Do as many activities as you can, go to as many industry related events as you can, and talk to everyone you can.

One weird habit/fact about you: When I was younger I used to dip my chips in pop.

Favorite show animal & why? My heifer Madison that I showed in 2016. I had a very successful year with that heifer and she will always hold a special place in my heart for that reason and many more.

What do you want to be when you grow up: I already have graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s in Accounting and am currently pursuing a Masters in the Science of Accounting with a Tax Emphasis. I will become a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). With my certification, I will become a tax accountant at a large firm. Along with my accounting career, I will work on my family farm, breeding high quality show and breeding stock. I am super excited for the future of my farm and the industry. Being an owner in Onset (2017 Fort Worth and NAILE Champion Chi Bull), I am excited for the great Chi calves he will continue to produce. Along with

working on the farm, I plan to fit the cattle I sell. Additionally, I will continue my involvement in 4-H, running the beef department and fitting competition. Futhermore, I will be engaged in my state and national Chi association.

What quality/skill do you have that you are most proud of: I am a pretty open person and consider myself to be approachable.

I am most proud of this skill as I used to be very quiet and shy. This has helped me as I have been a part of and led groups, whether for a project or in a club, such as FFA. This skill is useful in the cattle industry as I meet more people and have great conversations. I have been able to make many friends and have learned much over the years, using this skill.

Early Bird or Night Owl: I can be both. I get up early and stay up late working on calves and around the farm. When I’m at school, I am a night owl as I stay up late, getting my best work done.

Most Embarrassing show moment: I was in the final drive and tapped the tail of my show heifer. When I was moving the showstick back, she swung her tail and got it stuck. Luckily, Cindy CagwinJohnston was next to me taking pictures and saved the day. No one even noticed (but now everyone knows so…).

Why do you show/raise Chi cattle: Why not? Chianina is such a great breed with great potential. The Chi calves I raise are big bodied with great structure. Bringing the aspects of market and breeding together, the Chi breed offers a great package. Show heifers turn into great cows. Bulls are powerful and useful. When it comes to meat quality, calves still have the size, muscling, and marbling needed to make prime ribeye. In the show ring, you can get an elegant look with body, mass, and function. At the end of the day, you can take a Chi show heifer and turn her into your next donor.

Who has been your mentor & why: I would say that Kendra VanOrder has been a great mentor, fitting partner, and one of my best friends. She overcomes her obstacles and has paved her own path, never looking to take the easy way out. Aging out of junior shows didn’t stop her. She is an amazing fitter and is always giving back. She assists kids in her county and around Michigan, whether it’s teaching kids to clip or show, she is always willing to help. She also coaches a very competitive judging team with many wins under their belt. She puts others before herself and thinks on her own. I could go on and on about how great she is because she truly is amazing and has been a great mentor over the years.

Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed: My advice to a new member would be get a mentor and work hard. Mentors are excellent for giving advice on how to raise your calf and become a better showman, as you don’t have to have the best calf in the country to excel in showmanship. You can work hard with hair care and a dietary plan to make a difference in your calves. Lastly, don’t be afraid

to fail. “Falling and getting back up is what brings you success” (Tony Horton).

Would we find you on the wash rack or on the blower? I am on the wash rack. I always manage to get sprayed on the first calf. While I’m already soaked, I stay and do the rest so no one else gets soaked.

One weird habit/fact about you: I set my alarm at an odd time (ex: 6:52, 8:57). I figure that an extra minute or so of sleep a night will eventually add up.

Favorite show animal & why? I have two favorite show heifers.

One of my favorite heifers is Daisy. I showed her in 2010 as a Bred & Owned SimSolution. She was the first heifer I ever won with. I had some mean show heifers until Daisy.

As a 12-year-old, having a heifer that didn’t kick me changed my perspective on heifers. My other favorite is Layla. I am very proud of this heifer as she is my ideal bred & owned calf, as I personally own the cow and my family owns the bull. I put a lot of work into this heifer and she went on to win the 2019 Michigan Beef Expo.

Beyond the show ring, these heifers are just so fun to be around.

It is always nice to be able to walk in the pasture and pet your old show heifer. Also, calving season is a lot better when you are looking forward to seeing what they will produce.

I show and raise Chi cattle because they have been in my family for many, many years, and it has always been a family “tradition” to show this breed. My grandpa has had Chi cattle for a long time and has shown them himself. It’s a great breed to be a part of and I couldn’t imagine not being in it.

Who has been your mentor & why: My dad and grandpa are my mentors. They have helped me since I was 5 years old with my show cattle, from picking them out to getting them ready on show day. My grandpa has taught both me and my dad about cattle and that’s why I have fallen in love with these animals and this breed. My dad has always been there to teach me about being calm and collective while showing and so much more. I could not do it without their support.

Advice to a new junior starting in the Chi breed: My advice for a new junior starting is to get involved. Go out and do all the contests and meet all new people; it makes Jr. Nationals more fun than it already was!

Would we find you on the wash rack or on the blower? Wash Rack One weird habit/fact about you: I LOVE RAW POTATOES Favorite show animal & why? Halle and her mom, Blackie. My 2013 show heifer, Blackie, has been my favorite show animal. We had a bond like no other. She was my favorite to work with; she even let me sit and lay on her back. She is the one that taught me how to really show and love. Her disposition was impeccable and with the age I was it was perfect timing for us to be a pair. She then later had my show heifer Halle and she has been a blast to show. She’s given me the most wins and has had a great run so far. Not only that, but she is so sweet, has amazing hair and works really well.

SHOW RESULTS Kentucky State Fair Open Show Louisville, Ky. • Aug. 24, 2019 Judge: Jon Sweeney

For more than a decade, early in the 21st century, the Kentucky State Fair often hosted the largest Open Chianina Show of any state fair in the country. For many years, it was home to the third largest Chi show, behind the North American and Fort Worth. In recent years, show numbers have declined (similar to many other shows) but the quality remains strong.

Twelve breeders exhibited 20 head of quality breeding stock in a show that combined Chiangus and Chianina divisions.

Jon Sweeney, from Indiana, judged the show.

Sweeney consistently found quality, complete, sound, stylish cattle with a lot of “look.” Jon did a stellar job of accurately and fluently describing and comparing the cattle on the microphone.

In the heifer show, Joe Beckett, led SNL Special Style to the backdrop. This March, 2018 daughter of Style was a deep bodied, structurally, correct, highly fit heifer that was a logical winner. Two heifers seemed to be in contention for reserve, but Lindy Kiser eventually got the nod with her senior yearling heifer, JSUL Flamin Tamale 7585E. This October, 2017 daughter of SUL Right Direction, was a big, powerful, deep bodied female, that was in remarkably good condition.

The bull show was tough. Dr. Rob Sheets has bred and exhibited a lot of good Chianina cattle, but his 2019 bull calf, RSRS Outlaw 10G, sired by SC SRR Outlier 503C and out of RSRS Alexandra 1CA, may well be the best bull that he’s ever led. This is really saying something, considering that Doc and Four Roses exhibited the 2013 National Champion Chiangus bull, Excalibur 1CA. Outlaw had previously been the Grand Champion Chianina bull at the Indiana State Fair. This stout, three dimensional, heavy boned, big topped, thick ended, sound, powerful moving, good haired calf was just what Judge Sweeney was looking for that day.

The yearling bulls were very competitive.

Grand ‘Ole Place Farms won the April, 2018

class with a son of Colburn Primo, out of TR Your Magic Lace PCA. VBS Farms won the March, 2018 class, with VBS Manly 1CA. This son of Cowboy Up is likely one of the highest performing, stoutest, deepest, most powerful Chiangus bulls that you’ll ever see, with the added advantage of having an extremely impressive EPD Profile (CED 11, BW 1.9, WW 71, YW 114, Milk 15). After the smoke cleared in that division, the stylish Primo son emerged as the champion, with the high performing, good numbered Cowboy Up son being slapped as reserve.

Grand ‘Ole Place Farms won the Produce of Dam class with a pair of (natural) full sibs out of TR Your Magic Lace PCA. The “Lace” cow is sired by the dependable, predictable TR Trail Blazer, and out of Shrick’s infamous Lace Cow. How many state fairs do you attend which have multiple entries in the Get of Sire class?

GOP Farms and Sheets Chiangus teamed up to win the class with the get of Colburn Primo, followed closely by the VBS entry sired

by Cowboy Up. These were different sets of cattle, with the Primo get being good fronted, structurally, correct, stylish cattle, while the Cowboy Up get was extremely thick, meaty, big bodied, and high performing. Two great sets of cattle with different uses.

Fourteen different families exhibited at the 2019 Kentucky State Fair. That number is expected to increase significantly in 2020, as the Kentucky State Fair will also host the 2020 Eastern Region Junior Chianina Heifer Show.

Those heifers will be able to show in both the Kentucky State Fair Open Chianina Show, as well as the Eastern Region Junior Chianina Show.

For decades, the Tennessee State Fair has hosted one of the most prestigious Chianina Shows of any state fair in America. While participation has declined, the quality of the cattle (the majority of which are Chiangus) and the enthusiasm of the breeders and exhibitors certainly has not. Breeders from four states made their annual pilgrimage to Nashville to support the show and our breed.

The Tennessee State Fair is in transition.

The story last year was that 2018 would be the final year for the TSF at this facility. Fast forward to 2019, and we’re stalled in the same barns, and showing in the same arena as before. However, new barns are under construction just over the hill, being built on the same grounds, so it’s looking more likely that the 2020 TSF will have a different look and a slightly different location.

There were five divisions exhibited in the Grand Champion lineup. All five heifers were structurally correct, sound moving females that more than looked the part. A pair of first cousins led half sib heifers to the backdrop.

Chas Rowlett finished up his junior career at his home state fair in a big way when he led HIGG Fantasy 832F 2CA to the backdrop. This highly fit, November, 2018 natural daughter of Clockwork, out of a Plainview Lutton Chiangus cow, was a fancy, feminine, sound moving female with a lot of look and style.

Fantasy” also won the junior show, and, on Sunday evening, was selected as the Supreme Champion Heifer at the Tennessee State Fair Junior Show. (Incidentally, Fantasy was largely overlooked in Higgins Farms’ spring online sale, as she changed hands at the bargain price of $2900!!!)

Kaylee Rowlett followed in the Reserve spot with a royally bred half-sister to the champion.

HIGG Fiona 803F ET is a 2CA ET daughter of Clockwork, out of another ET daughter of Remedy and the super consistent Higgins donor, TR Kellie. Fiona has 23.37% Chianina blood. That pair of females fit together very well and made a beautiful set of champions.

The show was judged by Lee Pritchard, from Bells, Texas. Lee thoroughly and completely described the cattle, was extremely positive, Reserve Grand Champion AOB Female and did an effective job sorting, evaluating Fire’s Buttercup and discussing each animal.
