CHIANINA CONNECTION
by Dustin Hurlbut, CEO,
It’s been a busy, fast paced year to this point and the gas pedal doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon. We are now a month past the most exciting time of the year for our junior members, and it was a HUGE success! We strive to create a fun and educational junior national and I believe Heather and Rilee are two of the best at making this happen! The number of hours that go into putting on a National Junior Heifer Show is hard to fathom. It’s a lot of early mornings and late nights in a short window, not including the many months leading up to the best week of the summer. So, my hats off to everyone who puts the time in behind the scenes to make the days go by seamlessly.
This dedication and time commitment rolls over into the National Shows as well. Fall and winter get to be very busy, starting in Kansas City with the American Royal, then on to Louisville for the NAILE and our national show, followed quickly by Oklahoma City, Denver and Ft Worth! It makes for a lot of travel and nights away from home for the staff. Throw in some production sales, consignment sales and online sales that we try to visit and the days add up quickly for travel. The dedication our staff has to the association is unparalleled, so when you see them out and about, be sure to thank them.
As the show season kicks off, I would like to encourage everyone to exhibit your Chiangus cattle in Louisville this fall for our National Show. We received a probation letter from the NAILE for our junior and open Chiangus shows. In order to keep our shows going, we need to exhibit 25 head through the ring in each of those shows. Think about what you can enter and exhibit at this show in November. As we all know, the Chiangus shows are tough and packed with quality cattle, but we need to increase our numbers. Open shows as a whole seem to be trending down across all breeds, but if we can all do our part, these shows will remain successful. Your Board of Directors have been actively discussing options to help increase the number of cattle exhibited
and many great ideas have come from the discussions up to this point. A committee is being formed, composed of Directors and association members to further pursue discussions on this topic. We have had great feedback from the membership on this in the past month and it is encouraging to see so many involved and concerned.
I would also like to remind you that Board of Director nominations are now being taken. Serving on the board is a rewarding experience and I would encourage you to apply. If you are on the fence about it and have any questions please give me or Heather a call to talk about it. We’re happy to answer any questions.
Our National Sale will once again take place in Oklahoma City during the Cattlemen’s Congress and it’s time to start thinking about what you can consign. The entry deadline will be approaching quickly. While weaning calves and starting to break cattle, keep the sale in mind. The sale has been a great success in the past and some breed leading genetics have been offered to the public. Thank You to our past consignors for your support and we look forward to working with everyone moving forward.
Lastly, I would like to invite everyone to the annual meeting in Louisville this fall, held in conjunction with our National Shows. The NAILE schedule has been adjusted and we are on the long schedule again. The Annual Meeting and Awards Presentations will be on Tuesday, November 18th in West Hall and 3 pm. We would love to see you there.
As always, if you need anything or would like to schedule a herd visit give me a call, text or email and we will try our best to stop by.
~ Dustin

LADIES AUXILIARY
Auxiliary Update
by Kelsey Evans, President
Another summer has come and gone. State fairs are ending, school has started back up and fall is quickly approaching. Unfortunately, time goes by so fast, and goes even faster with each passing year. Make sure you enjoy every moment. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces at junior nationals. Even without my kids showing, watching families make their own memories and experience the excitement that the NJHS brings is fun.
The ladies auxiliary awarded a great number of scholarships this summer and I wish each and every recipient the very best as they start college and continue their educations all across the country. This year's recipients included: Emma Yochum of Ohio, Calob Walker of Texas, Remi Earnhart of Indiana, Reagan Beneker of Ohio, Frank Hazelrigg of Missouri, and Addison Brueggeman of Iowa. Congratulations!
Additionally, we crowned new royalty and we are excited to have ACA National Queen, Kathryn Naber, and ACA National Princess, Landree Warnock, representing the auxiliary and association over the next year. Both ladies will undoubtedly be great ambassadors of the breed, the youth that make up our membership, and serve as wonderful role models for the girls within the AJCA.
Wishing each and everyone a safe and successful fall. I look forward to seeing you in Louisville, and beyond!

A WORD FROM THE BOARD
Food For Thought
by MaLaine Strope, Northwest Region Director
The 2025 National Junior Show is in the books and planning has already begun for 2026. What a fantastic event. The number of exhibitors continues to rise year-to-year along, with the number of animals shown. Approximately 50 more kids and 50 more cattle were shown in 2025 as compared to 2024 for our association. Hats off to both the ACA and AMAA staff along with the interns, Junior Board members and volunteers who work tirelessly during the event and throughout the year. Also, a big “Thank you” to all the sponsors. Without you, this success would not be possible.
For the ACA and the AJCA to continue to be successful, we need to continue to focus on the needs of our juniors and our small breeders who register less than 6 head a year. As published in the May/June/July ACJ, junior members comprise 60% of our membership and 90% of our breeders register less than 6 head a year. As I stated in my article last spring, Chianina influenced cattle should be promoted for all producers no matter to whom they market, but we need to take advantage of our breed’s success in the show ring for our juniors and the small breeder. The show ring is our breed’s niche.
Since 2023, the number of Chianina females shown at Junior Nationals has increased from 105 in 2023, to 111 in 2024 and 123 head in 2025. The Chi-Composite numbers continue to increase from 128 in 2023, to 137 in 2024 and 177 head in 2025. This program has been a game changer for our breed. Remember, it did not exist as a division until 2021, and it now consistently has the highest participation. This division will continue to grow now that it is also a classification in our open shows. Our members, especially the juniors, spoke for a change and it has helped our association with increased participation and revenue, which benefits ALL our members, no matter what their market focus. Without the Chi-Composite rule change, the last 3 years’ numbers at Junior Nationals would paint a VERY different picture.
Our Junior National Chiangus numbers continue to remain flat; 33 in 2023 and 2024, and 32 head in 2025. An effort
was made to increase participation in 2024 and 2025 with the addition of premiums for the champions. Our Chiangus National Show at the NAILE has been placed on probation for 2025. Like the forward thinking of the Chi-Composite program, a change is needed for our Chiangus classification if we want it to remain a show division at any level.
Under current show rules, Chiangus show heifers are hard to make. Not just my words, but the words of other members as well. We should expand our female Chiangus category to include cattle that are less than 6.25% Chianina if the percent “other” does not exceed the percent Chianina blood. This change will increase numbers and the depth of quality whether the heifers are in the show ring, front pasture or producing quality commercial stock.
This modification will expand the mating possibilities of current Chiangus females to popular Angus bulls. It will also open a new market for Angus breeders looking to expand into the Chiangus breed. All registered Chiangus bulls will be an option for registered Angus females. Current show rules limit the choice to only those bulls 12.5% Chiangus and above. Modification to the current show rule gives the Chiangus division the opportunity to not just survive but thrive, much like the Chi-Composite division.
A change to our Chiangus classification criteria will equate to more members, increased registrations, improved depth of quality, expanded marketability and revenue generation. If we choose to do nothing and be complacent with the status quo, the Chiangus division will be a thing of the past and we as an organization will have failed to take advantage of an opportunity to benefit all our members, no matter their production focus.
This decision needs to be made now to benefit Fall sales, the 2026 show season and beyond. I would encourage you to talk with your board members regarding this issue and share your thoughts as we navigate this discussion. More opportunities for our breeders and junior members…our association’s future.
A WORD FROM THE BOARD
Chiangus Show Numbers – How to Increase Them
by Justin Tracy, At Large Director
By now, most of our membership is aware of the proposed change to the Chiangus show heifer percentage rule being considered by the board of directors. The way this proposed change is currently written, all registered 1CA, 2CA and PCA Chiangus and Red Chiangus heifers with less than 6.25% Chianina would be eligible to show as Chiangus, as long as the percent “Other” does not exceed the percent Chianina. There have also been some concessions and modifications discussed to make a minimum percent Chianina requirement of 3.125%.
The belief driving this change is that lowering the Chianina percentage would increase show numbers at our dwindling National Chiangus shows. There has been much debate amongst the board members over this issue. And although I know we need to make changes to get our numbers back up at Louisville and Fort Worth, I remain unconvinced lowering the allowed percentage would be the solution to long term success.
When we evaluate open show participation, based on total number of Chiangus females being exhibited annually across all major shows, it has averaged 50 head per year over the past 7 years. The difference is, now there are five shows exhibitors can choose from instead of three, and we are seeing that some shows are a bigger draw for folks than others. So, yes, we still need to bring our numbers up at our National Show in Louisville and make Forth Worth stronger if we want to keep it. And yes, we need to find viable incentives to get people back in these show rings. But to say numbers are down in the Chiangus open shows is not telling the whole story. And I think lowering the percentage to raise participation is an overreaction to a problem that might easily be solved with some other creative incentives.
I, for one, cannot be convinced that less Chi percentage makes our females more competitive and I haven’t yet seen any hard evidence that this percentage change will increase show participation. In fact, I think the Chianina percentage should be even higher! The offering of quality Chiangus AI sires right now, is at an all-time high — our Chiangus bull breeders are making it pretty easy for us to make them good and keep them at a 6.25% minimum. It would be a huge disservice to these breeders for us to lower the percentage and devalue their higher percent cattle when they’ve worked so hard to keep breeding them high.
I hope you will join me in asking the board to show some pride in keeping the Chianina in our Chiangus. I know we have a membership that is talented, creative, dedicated and intelligent enough to find solutions to raising the exhibitor numbers at Chiangus open shows. Solutions that do not include diluting the percentage of Chianina in our Chiangus cattle. We have industry leading minds that set the tone for every breed. These Chianina cattle are elite.
Call your board members, we are here to work for you and do what’s best for the entire breed. Share your thoughts on this proposed rule change. Share your ideas for how to keep our national Chiangus shows going strong. I believe there are solutions to get folks back in the show ring at our national Chiangus shows. I believe there are solutions to help breeders find mating options that can keep show heifer percentages at a 6.25% minimum. Let’s work together to keep the Chianina in our Chiangus cattle and show the industry how good we can make them by getting back out there and competing.

Not Just a Cattle Show
by Charlie Hazelrigg, President & At Large Director
Hundreds of kids, hundreds of cattle, all in Louisville for one reason – the National Junior Heifer Show. But, it’s so much more. It’s easy to get caught up in the show, especially as an outsider looking in. But to these kids, this week means more.
It’s friends being reunited after not seeing each other for a whole year. For me, that meant seeing Mikayla McDonald and Ellie Hert in person and not through a Zoom screen! It’s kids facing their fear of public speaking, and finding out it wasn’t so bad after all! It’s making new friends at the wash rack, friends you get to hang out with all week, and look forward to seeing them next year. It’s young kids watching their role models during team fitting, cheering for them when their team name gets called. It’s so much more.
Some kids will leave empty-handed, some will leave with banners from the show, and some with prizes from a contest, but every kid will leave with memories.
This past June, I witnessed countless memories being made, friendships being formed, and life lessons being learned. All happening at a cattle show. Many kids will tell you it’s their favorite week of the summer, something they look forward to all year round. Cattle are what bring us together physically, but at the National Junior Heifer Show, there is so much more that truly brings us together.
I am so blessed to be a part of an organization that is for the kids! The week is so much more than just a cattle show!
If you haven’t taken a trip to the National Junior Heifer Show, you should really consider it! 2026 is your year! We will be in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 12-18, and we would love to see you there!

Value Isn’t Measured In Banners
by Ellie Hert, Vice President & At Large Director
Growing up in a house where cows were always in the pasture, our family outings were trips to the sale barn, and we knew the local vet on a first-name basis. I’ve always had ties to the cattle industry, but these early years of working in the barn were valuable in developing my love for cattle and the agriculture industry as a whole.
Although I started showing cattle at age 10, I didn’t become a member of the AJCA until I was 15. Throughout my time showing cattle I’ve had my fair share of hardships. One of the biggest mistakes I made was placing my identity in success, rather than learning from my experiences.
Don’t get me wrong, winning feels amazing. The relief of having all of your hard work pay off and for someone to recognize it is comforting. However, if we let these tangible winnings be our only source of joy, we will never be fulfilled.
This was a lesson I learned the hard way. During my junior year of high school, I began to feel burnt out. It seemed as if all of the work I put into my animals was worthless because I hadn’t won a class, earned a buckle or received a banner in months. I was tired of doing everything only to receive nothing and it really took away the fun of showing cattle.
However, looking back, I see that the value of my journey came from just that – the journey. The relationships and connections I made, the lessons I learned and the completely new outlook I have on showing cattle is what it’s all about.
As we move into a new show season, I hope each of you can keep this in mind – no banner or buckle can ever replace the lessons in front of us. Whether it comes from a simple handshake with someone in the barns, hard work put in at home or stepping out of your comfort zone to seize a new opportunity, these small moments make up a bigger picture of our show journey. To me, showing cattle is all about community, advocating for the industry and bettering ourselves.
As years go on, banners collect dust and buckles lose their shine. But, at the end of the day, value isn’t measured in banners – it comes from the connections, experiences, lessons and joy found in each small moment.

National Western Stock Show Announces Supreme Junior Heifer Drive
Denver, CO – The inaugural National Western Stock Show Supreme Junior Heifer Drive (The Drive) will offer junior heifer showmen the opportunity to compete for $54,500 in scholarships. The junior heifer breed champions are invited to compete in The Drive, which will be judged on January 24, 2026, during the semi-final PRCA rodeo performance after a parade of all breed champions. A top five will be selected before the live crowd. Subsequent years will see the total payout grow to $100,000.
At the NWSS, there are currently 15 breed associations that host junior heifer shows, some with multiple breed champions, making 26 possible breed champions eligible for the Supreme Junior Heifer Drive, including: Angus; Aberdeen Percentage/ Purebred, Fullblood; Charolais, Purebred and percentage; Chianina and Chiangus; Simmental Purebred and Percentage; Shorthorn, Shorthorn Plus; South Devon, Poundmakers; Gelbvieh, Gelbvieh Balancer; Maine, Maintainer, Maine-Angus; Limousin; Longhorn; Highland; Miniature Hereford; Hereford Horned, Hereford Polled; and Red Angus.
Each competitor in the Supreme Junior Heifer Drive will earn $1,000 for their participation in the Supreme Junior Heifer Drive. In its inaugural year, the Supreme Champion Heifer will be awarded $10,000 plus a banner; Reserve Supreme Champion Heifer will be awarded $7,500 plus a banner; third overall will be awarded $5,000 plus a banner; fourth overall will be awarded $3,500 plus a banner; and fifth overall will be awarded $2,500 plus a banner. Including the $1,000 cash payout, the total 2026 payout will be $54,500.
NWSS CEO Wes Allison said The Drive is an investment in the junior exhibitors who invest time and treasure into raising and exhibiting high quality cattle.
“At Denver, we believe in junior exhibitors and in creating meaningful opportunities for those who bring their best to the National Western each January,” Allison said. “For decades, the National Western has been the destination for elite junior exhibitors and top-quality livestock. We want to honor that dedication and investment by building a path that leads to real rewards — the opportunity to offer $100,000 in cash and scholarships to those who rise to the top.”
In 2027, the total payout will grow to $79,500 with the Supreme Champion Junior Heifer earning $15,000 plus a banner. In 2028 and subsequent years, the total payout will grow to $100,000 with the Supreme Champion Junior Heifer earning $25,000 plus a banner.
Established in 1906, the National Western Stock Show is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides college and graduate-level scholarships in agricultural science, business, and rural medicine. Our mission is to serve producers and consumers worldwide by being the premier annual livestock show and center for year-round events. The 16-day show in January also serves as an entertainment arena, hosting one of the world’s richest regular-season professional rodeos, world-class horse shows, family educational events, and Colorado’s largest western trade show.
