A note from your Editor July 2021 From one skincare enthusiast to another - Layers is a limited edition magazine on all things beauty and skincare. 2020 saw a surge in so called 'Skinfluencers' with the covid-19 lockdown resulting in thousands investing their money on products for their wellbeing. With 'Self care' being one of the most hashtagged phrases throughout the pandemic I saw a gap in the market for an exclusive skincare based magazine.

Layers aim to cover topics like; current skincare trends, hit and misses on the market, inclusive skincare routines, influencer marketing, skincare nightmares and our reader's personal journey's.

Whatever the topic we all have one goal in mind - happy, healthy and glowing skin!

In celebration of the magazine's first issue we have an exclusive interview with micro - influencer Louise Weale, who shares her skincare story and the personal struggles with the misuse of products. This week's edition also features our favourite tips and and product recommendations for 2021.

Cassandra Bankson Cassandra Bankson, a licensed esthetician, is basically considered a relic on Youtube - joining way back in 2010. A former cystic acne sufferer, it's fair to say Cassandra has tried her fair share of skincare products. Cassandra has all the info on which acne products are essentials and which ones to avoid. Her in depth product reviews are informative, fair and consistent, she features a series on the channel where she undergoes extensive research into all our favourite brands and gives the inside scoop. For all you acne sufferers out there, this girl is for you.

James Welsh Usually alongside his twin brother Robert, the pair are a comedy duo. James specialises in skincare and Robert in make up. James is all about that radiant glow from within look with his signature saying being: "skincare is all about progression over perfection because perfection doesn't exist." James is a major fan when it comes to Korean skincare products, stemming from being an acne sufferer in his teenage years. His channel started as a male grooming and hair care platform but since doing skincare James's subscriber count is now at an incredible 1.3 million!

Dr. Dray The dermatologist of YouTube. Dr Dray doesn't care about the name, packaging or style of a product as long as it has quality ingredients and performs well. She is upfront and honest about every product, and isn't afraid to upset a brand if their product isn't up to standards. 'Good skincare doesn't have to be expensive' is the message Dr Dray conveys to her viewers. You can trust the advice given from Dr Dray so check out her channel if you want a medical professional's real and honest opinion.

YouTube has been very influential for me in my skincare journey. Many YouTubers have taught me what the wrong or right thing is to do when it comes to skincare and what fits my skin type especially.

Before YouTube I had a basic routine but since watching creators that specialise in skincare it has taught me more about what products I should be using specifically for my skin type and the importance of how to correctly use skincare products. I have become aware of the potential risks if skincare products are used incorrectly. I started my skincare routine copying whatever the YouTubers I watched were doing - it lead to me overloading my skin with so many different products leaving my skin super blemished and irritated. I cut down my products to find out what worked best for me and discovered that what works for one may not work for another. I was forced into the skincare community from a young age as I suffered greatly in my early teens with cystic acne. It got so bad I had to be referred to a dermatologist who was able to prescribe the high risk drug Roaccutane in an attempt to clear up my skin.

After six months of treatment and constant dry skin as a side effect to the medication my acne cleared completely. Whilst on the medication my skincare routine had to be very minimal and extra hydrating. I used the Cetaphil Daily Facial Wash followed by the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion. Could Green Tea and pomegranate be skincare's best kept secret?

A study by The British Association of Dermatologists suggest there is new evidence that these common supermarket items could be the answer to reversing skin damage

NEWSFLASH! New evidence showcased at British Society of Investigative Dermatology Annual Meeting revealed that there are organic chemical compounds found in green tea and pomegranate called Polyphenols.

Polyphenols are known to reduce oxidative stress. The body is subject to oxidative stress when subject to excessive exposure to sunlight and frequent UV radiation.

This study revealed that pomegranate significantly reduces the damage inflicted by oxidative stress on DNA in skin fibroblasts by a huge 47%, crazy right?

To all my girls and guys out there - get that green tea flowing and start popping those pomegranate seeds for healthier skin!

Dermatologists are warning against the dangers of overusing skincare. The overuse of products could be putting your skin at risk of permanent damage!

By Amelia Tipper Have you ever been so excited about buying a new product that you use it every twice daily, religiously in hope it will completely transform your skin? We've all been there, but did you know it could be doing more damage than good?

I'm speaking on behalf of a self proclaimed skincare addict who used to use 3 cleansers, 5 serums, a toner and 2 moisturisers in one sitting because I thought it was what everybody else was doing.

Oh how I was wrong.

'Natural' skincare is the latest trend but dermatologists aren't jumping on the bandwagon, Here are some debunked myths that have recently come to light about natural skincare.

'Natural products are more efficient' No - Natural skincare products often don't produce the results they claim to.

'Natural is safer'' No - Natural products do not contain any preservatives - this means bacteria can easily develop and lead to breakouts.

'You know the ingredients in natural skincare'' No - Natural products often have misleading labels and do not list the entirety of the ingredients formulated.

'Natural products work so much faster'' No - clever marketing strategies have been known to create the placebo effect when it comes to natural skincare.

'Natural is the safest option' No - the opinion of 'natural = safe' isn't the case, in fact quite the opposite.

Back in March this year Gwyneth featured in a disastrous video for Vogue UK's YouTube channel where the A-Lister shared her daily skincare routine.

She can be seen only applying SPF to her nose and preaches how she doesn't like to apply 'excessive amounts of sun cream. Find the perfect starter routine for your skin type BASIC

Use a face wash only when you think you need to - this could be once a day at night. A hydrating serum is your best friend, ideally one with hyaluronic acid The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid (£5.99 Boots.com) is a great choice and performs best when applied to damp skin. Use a liquid exfoliator 3x a week and make sure to finish with a lather of rich moisturiser of your choice.

Oily/Acne prone

A cleanser containing salicylic acid is a a fantastic choice for oily acne prone skin. Use 2x daily, I recommend CereVe SA Smoothing Cleanser (£9.60 Boots.com) for a gentle yet effective cleanse. Follow with a hydrating serum and acne treatment. Finish with a light hydrating moisturiser like the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion (£7.60 Boots.com).

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel (£13.87 Boots.com) is fantastic for combination skin as it provides a deep cleanse yet doesn't completely strip the skin of it's natural oils. A niacinamide serum is always a good choice to help regulate any excess oils - I recommend either The Inkey List Niacinamide (£6.99 lookfantastic.com) or The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (£5.00 beautybay.com). Follow with your favourite moisturiser.

Followed by a hydrating serum or toner and finish with a thick moisturiser.
