maize farming For decades the government has promoted a self-sustaining economy, which includes growing sufficient food crops to feed the population. Conventional techniques used to farm these staple crops, can be damaging to the environment, depleting soil and driving deforestation, in a region already at high risk due to climate change. The Ghana Innovation Farm protects food supplies and the environment.

bamboo composites Existing bamboo forests in the central and southwestern regions make Ghana well equipped to innovate with the use of bamboo composites, which are lightweight, structurally durable, and termite resistant, making them an economical alternative to the hardwoods the region is known for.

Ghana Bamboo Bikes Ghana Bamboo Bikes is a woman-owned company based out of nearby Kumasi that uses bamboo and resin to create sustainable, durable bicycles. The existing knowledge, resources, and techniques of this and other local companies can be leveraged to develop a highly sustainable construction system for the Ghana Innovation Farm, using local materials and supporting local businesses.

Fall 2021 Critic: Michael Gamble Collaboration with Lauriane Donang, Stephen Conschafter, Luke Davis, Hithaisri Janga

sDA (Spatial Daylight Autonomy) overall sDA: 20% Light finishes and glazed interior partitions will maximize the transmittance of daylight into the interior spaces in addition to the spaces with advantageous locations near the front atrium and central lightwell.

ASE (Annual Solar Exposure) overall ASE: 15% Operable shading devices will be a critical component to managing glare. Automated systems can balance natural lighting while minimizing uncomfortable glare.

Envelope Radiation maximum solar potential: 268 kWh/m2 High radiation potential on the green roof and photovoltaic array will maximize energy generation and vegetative potential.

Sunlight Hours maximum sun hours: 12 The building's orientation makes sunlight available throughout the operating day, with glare management during the morning hours (eastern sunlight into the offices) being the primary concern.
