Through thoughtful materials selection and tectonic expression, design can connect the built and natural environments more seamlessly to reveal the particularities of place. Custom vertical louvers are on the floor to ceiling glazing to mimic passing through the trees to reveal new views.
CONNECTION TO LOCAL TRADITION
Poetic tectonic expression has the power to tell a story of how a place might create its own history while honoring its predecessors. The organization and tectonic expression of the community areas mimic that of the longhouse from the local Nez Perce tribe. The linearality of the longhouse is reimagined in the structure to create a new modern take. The custom vertical louvers are woven together just as in the longhouse while also having a practical purpose.
CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY
Deeper connection with local communities through small artisan design details as well as through a program that encourages experiences with local people. The design uses and encourages local artists with its art galleries and materiality. Joseph is known for its bronze work and sculptures from which the doors to the community areas are made.
