Where the sun rises

Since 1965, through its design and voyages, CFOC has brought together French ‘art de vivre’ with the craftmanships from the Orient.

It is an invitation to create and share profound moments with others, through objects that bring people together.

It is a generous sharing of the Eastern and Asian way of life. One that celebrates hospitality and authenticity. Where one is drawn in and spontaneously feels at home.

our story

Exposée de Barcelone à la Cité Interdite et de Monaco à Sao Paulo, sa collection est ici une dernière fois partagée afin de lui rendre hommage et de prolonger son rêve.

The story of CFOC began in the sixties.

When Captain Jacques Dautresme docks for the very first time in Shanghai in the 1920s,  he is overwhelmed by a sense of déjà-vu. The streets feel familiar, the colours  look obvious , the smells around him are like  memories. China is his homeland.

Lulled by his uncle’s stories, François Dautresme  puts China at the heart of his life. He wants to know everything: the labour of the farmer in the rice fields, the life of the mandarin in the Forbidden City, the female workers who make paintings out of fabric. As early as 1963, he  journeys through the Chinese deserts, crosses the Yellow River and strolls through Old Beijing. Despairing at the sight of this heritage is vanishing little by little, he takes hundreds of pictures and starts an encyclopaedic collection bringing together  all that was created by this people of artists-craftsmen. In  a civilisation where every single thing must be perfect, every single basket is a genuine creation, every single brush is a work of art. He thus becomes the keeper of a thousand-year-old culture.

Shown from Barcelona to the Forbidden City and from Monaco to Sao Paulo, his collection is shared one last time to pay homage to him and give rise to new dreams.

It is a story about passion, travels and new encounters. It is the story of a man, François Dautresme, who travelled throughout China and Asia in search of unique skills ; who devoted his life to preserving this heritage and encouraged people to discover these crafts. He was a designer ahead of his time, an eccentric merchant who knew how to create and pass on his innate sensitivity to beauty.

CFOC is a beautiful human adventure in which we take pride, and which continues to drive us.

our way

We believe that decoration enables everyone to align their interior with their inner self. To find one’s Way. The Way we seek to be in harmony with the universe, with ourselves, and with nature. We are creating a new ‘art de vivre’ where beauty gives meaning to everyday gestures. An ‘art de vivre’ that brings people together and invents a new kind of hospitality, both solar and warm. A new form of generosity.

Where the sun rises

our collections

Tableware, decoration, and furniture are all original creations. Following in the footsteps of the brand’s founder, Valérie Mayéko Le Héno, our creative director, is a 21st-century explorer, who uncovers materials, skills and objects, which she then reinterprets to bring them up to date. Our collections invite to take part in a real journey, one that surprises, intrigues and moves.

craftmanships

Basketry, cabinet-making, weaving, glasswork, ceramics, lacquer, we work with workshops and craftsmen in a dozen Asian countries, from Japan to India. These manufacturing workshops often belong to families who pass on their skills from generation to generation. We are proud to maintain strong and lasting relationships with them, and to be able to promote their expertise through our creations.

Ceramics

CFOC elevates mealtimes with beautiful tableware handcrafted by artisans from across the Asian continent. Potters from China, Japan, and Vietnam shape the local clay with their skilled hands, having mastered the art of ceramics passed from generation to generation over the centuries. Challenged by CFOC to revisit porcelain and explore its delicacy, they create authentic, colorful glazed stoneware plates, bowls, and cups, bringing the table to life with their meticulously crafted pieces.

Ceramics is a truly multifaceted art form. From translucent porcelain to durable stoneware and bone china, it is one of CFOC’s favorite fields of expression, and the brand carefully selects the finest clays to create its tableware collections.

The main component of porcelain, kaolin is a white clay whose name derives from the Chinese “Gaoling”, a quarry in Jingdezhen, China, where abundant deposits of this material were mined. A true white gold of exceptional quality, kaolin can contain quartz crystals, which give the porcelain its incomparable whiteness, translucency, and intense brilliance.

TRAYS TABLEWARE DECORATIVE ITEMS

Lacquered items

Elevated to an art form several millennia ago, lacquer work is undoubtedly one of the most iconic crafts in Asia. From the natural resin carefully extracted from the sap of the lacquer tree to expertly crafted Ming trays and stools, all CFOC lacquerware is a testament to a journey through time and space. For us, lacquer is more than just a hallmark, it is our signature in all its glossy glory.

Lacquer sets the tone for each collection, with our original sepia, black, and sand designs more recently joined by verbena, honey, and chocolate colorways. Our trays, place mats, and bowls are now available in a total of ten shades, allowing you to choose the perfect color to elevate your table.

Both useful and decorative, the universally loved Signature tray—available in rectangular, round, or square models—is a firm favorite and makes the perfect gift for yourself or others.

The Wabi rattan bench is manufactured at a specialist furniture-making workshop in Yoyakarta, in the heart of Java. Its striking linear design is a nod to the 1970s, using a special pattern-laying technique that artisans are revisiting today.

After harvesting and processing the rattan, the canes are arranged one by one on a wooden frame to create a table with a regular pattern, where angles give way to harmonious curves. The artisans of Yogyakarta harvest the rattan—a wild, thorny vine that can grow to over two hundred meters in length—in the impenetrable jungles of Java, where it is particularly strong and dense. Once brought back to the village, the rattan is sorted, washed, and dried. It is then sanded to make it smooth, steam-bent, and carefully arranged on a wooden frame to create the desired pattern, before being varnished for a beautiful finish.

Glassware

Glassblowing is an ancient skill that first appeared 2,200 years ago in the cities of Phoenicia, modernday Lebanon. Artisan glassblowers work in extreme heat to shape the molten material into perfect forms, creating unique glasses, vases, and candle holders for the various CFOC collections. The glass is then colored, engraved, and decorated using other traditional techniques that are still practiced today, mainly in certain regions of China and India.

The Palma two-tone baskets are handmade from palm fibers harvested in the mountains south of Mexico City. These are cut into thin strips, dried, bleached, colored with vegetable dye, then delicately hand-woven and sewn by machine.

Available in a variety of shapes and embellished with leather handles, these baskets have a multitude of uses, for example, storing wood or newspapers.

The palm leaves are carefully harvested before being cut into thin strips, dried, bleached, and colored with vegetable dye. Artisans then braid and sew them by hand, skillfully finishing the baskets by machine to give them their shape.

Made from recycled leather, the Mishima oval two-tone (black and natural) and round monochrome (natural) mirrors can be mixed and matched in a play of shapes and colors.

Crafted by artisans from the Uttar Pradesh region of India, the recycled leather frames are steamed to bend and curve the material without causing creases or wrinkles. The delicate hand-woven white cotton interlacing provides a subtle finishing touch, the signature of the Mishima collection.

The round mirror can be hung in several directions, with the stitching at the top, bottom, or on one side.

Recycled leather is made from leather offcuts that are ground and combined with latex, then reconstituted into thick, rigid sheets. This recycled material is then worked using traditional leather craftsmanship methods, with a polishing process to smooth and shine the edges.

The Signature decorative mirrors combine traditional craftsmanship and innovative techniques. After meticulously sanding the oak frame, the wood is handvarnished to achieve this stunning walnut color. The mirror is then recessed into the frame, which is a real technical feat.

To maintain the shine of the wood, polish with beeswax using a soft cloth. Do not apply wax directly to the wood, but to the cloth. A scale paper template is provided for easy installation.

The Wabi rattan mirror is handmade by artisans in Yogyakarta, on the island of Java.

Artisans arrange the rattan canes one by one on a wooden frame surrounding a mirror, where sharp angles melt into harmonious curves.

This collection is a nod to the 1970s, using a special pattern-laying technique that artisans are revisiting today.

The artisans of Yogyakarta harvest the rattan—a wild, thorny vine that can grow to over two hundred meters in length—in the impenetrable jungle, where it is particularly strong and dense. Once brought back to the village, the rattan is sorted, washed, and dried. It is then sanded to make it smooth, steambent, and carefully arranged on a wooden frame to create the desired pattern, before being varnished for a beautiful finish.

Ceramics

In the 1980s, CFOC founder Francois Dautresme spotted a deep black pot at a restaurant in Mongolia. After lengthy negotiations with the Chinese authorities to obtain permission to export, he discovered a village of potters who had been working with clay for generations. Together, they set about creating the first ceramics for CFOC, and the rest is history...

CFOC pots and planters are instantly recognizable, loved for their pure shapes and spectacular glazing. It is the Yixing clay, from a town on the banks of the Blue River of China, which makes these creations so special. The spectacular colors and speckled effects vary from one piece to another after being fired at very high temperatures, and it is these irregularities that give Yixing pottery its undeniable beauty.

The Yixing ceramic planters are manufactured in the famous region of the same name, in the Yangtze Delta of China, a place renowned for its exceptional clay.

Featuring stunning random glazing that makes each piece unique, these extraordinary planters are handcrafted using the slab building technique, with the help of special molds. To achieve the speckled glaze, artisans allow the enamel to run from the neck to the base during firing.

It is the clay from Yixing, a town located 200 kilometers from Shanghai, which makes these planters so special, not forgetting the outstanding skill of the experienced potters who create these unique, frost-resistant pots with their agile movements and expertise honed over the years. Each piece is finished with a water hole for drainage.

The range includes two round coffee tables with aluminum tops adorned with an elegant green cord border woven in a radiant pattern. The table legs are made of wide, evenly stretched straps with adjustable feet to ensure optimal stability. The collection is made from an aluminum frame coated with outdoor paint, with stainless steel screws. The straps are polyester, and the cushions are covered with Olefin fabric with a 100% polyester lining and polyester wadding padding.

Artisans in Guangdong, China, make the Escale armchair by crafting the straps in double layers, first in a tight weave, like a regular grid, then with an open arrangement that ensures the backrest is flexible and comfortable. The width and distribution of the straps have been carefully studied to achieve a stable yet attractive final product. Although the collection is weather-resistant, we recommend bringing the Escale furniture indoors during the winter months.
