DR GLOVER VISITS THE 8TH ED AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 8th EPISCOPAL DISTRICT LAY LEADERSHIP & TRAINING CONVENTION Wesley Retreat and Conference Center, Woodworth, LA June 2-4, 2016 The 8th Episcopal District Lay Organization held its Lay Leadership and Training Convention at the Wesley Retreat and Conference Center in Woodworth, Louisiana. Bro. Melvin Davis, Episcopal Lay President and Sis. Stephanie Burks, Episcopal Director of Lay Activities planned a spirit filled and informative convention for all attendees.

Bro. Melvin Davis opened the convention with his greetings and recognized those who were at the convention for the first time. Bro. Davis called the first business session to order and the following reports were made: Credentials, President, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, 1st Vice­President, and the first reading of the proposed budget. At the close of the business session, the attendees were treated to a delicious lunch and enjoyed an exploration of the grounds of the retreat and conference center.

Sis. Stephanie Burks, (DOLA), kicked off the afternoon session with the first of three training sessions.

The first session’s topic was “Team Building - Forming Lifelong Connections to Build the Lay Organization.”

During this session, the attendees were divided into six groups. She presented each group with a deck of cards and directions for playing a card game. The main rule was NO TALKING but you could communicate using hand gestures. Each group had a different set of directions but each group did not know this from the beginning. After about 20 minutes of playing the game the one winner in each group had to switch to another group and continue playing the game. The problem was that the winner was playing the game based on the directions they knew and the players were playing the games based on their directions. Once it was over, she asked for feedback. Some of the feedback was (1) the winner had problems communicating with the players in the new group; (2) the group did not accept the winner from the other group because they wanted to do something different. After the feedback, she then related this game to the AME Church. How do we treat a new person when they come into the church with new ideas? How does the new person feel when they enter the church? This was an eye opener for everyone in the training session. The session ended with everyone being committed to welcoming new people and to be open to new ideas in the church. The first day concluded with the Evening Worship Service in the Chapel with Bishop Julius H. McAllister, Sr., speaker.

Everyone was still energized and motivated on Day 2 of the convention. A delicious breakfast was prepared for all the attendees to get them charged up for the activities of the day. The second session’s topic was “An Open Honest Discussion.” During this session, the attendees had a deep dialogue around issues facing our church as well as chance to raise questions and get answers. During the three hours of dialogue, some of the topics addressed were: 1. Lack of Young Adult Participation in churches and meetings - need a fair assessment of this District; we need to know who we really are, be honest about the numbers;

2. Local honesty - accountability - traditions are gone: Presiding Elders having conventions going on at the same times (not able to visit other PE Districts); no meditation at the altar upon en try into the sanctuary - people talking; lack of Bible study classes; no respect for worship and those things of worship.

3. Annual Evaluations - Follow the money and you will identify the mission: no money in Christian Ed., outreach/evangelism, family/youth ministry.

4. Go back to Class Leader - new members drift; need to have youths working with component heads to learn responsibilities of positions; need to start consolidating some churches to make them stronger.

5. Focus on being relevant in the communities to help meet real needs.

6. Discipline is not being used; members are asked to buy them but not use them! Pastors don’t use the Discipline.

7. Members need to learn what we are empowered to do in Annual Conferences and other meetings.

8. Look at small churches! Make changes to help them; the church spends all this money on things that don’t address the needs of the small churches!Those small churches can’t be full participants.

9. Look at LEGISLATION. The intent is to satisfy one side of the church. Delegates are not familiar with the bills. Delegates need to be members of the Lay Organization. They don’t go to meetings; don’t know what to vote on!Seems that the District is making more automatic delegates SUPER DELEGATES !

10. Delegates to connectional meetings need to know the purposes of committees on which they

serve. They need to see and read the minutes annually.

11. What happens to legislative language between Revisions and Compilations Committees?

12. God has not given us the spirit of fear! What has happened to strong lay who are unafraid to

challenge, in love, the leadership of our Zion?

The morning session ended with everyone agreeing to going back to the local church and working to make a difference in our churches.

Bro. William Brown, 1st Vice-President called the second business session to order. The following reports were made: Young Adult Representative, North Mississippi Conference President, Central North Louisiana Conference President, South Mississippi Conference President, and Louisiana Conference President.

After the reports the Budget Committee gave the 2nd reading of the proposed budget and the floor was open for discussion of the proposed budget.

The afternoon training session’s topic was “Our Young Adults: What Are They Really Thinking.” During this session, Sis. Bobbie Hollins, Young Adult Representative and Sis. Stephanie Burks, DOLA, started the discussion around where are the Young Adults and what are we doing to include them. The feedback from this session was: 1. Identification of Young Adults - communication 2. Skills data base 3. Have an informational activity.

4. YAR- Recruitment same day throughout Conferences ... document on website 5. YA survey to get their interests 6. Work collaboratively with YPD 7. What are we going to do ourselves to ensure that the Y AR’ s are a part of it?There are 27 different churches at the meeting. Take back information/ideas and get YA’s energized.

After the training session, President Melvin Davis asked Dr. Willie Glover, Connectional Lay President to come and offer his greetings.

Due to the heavy rain showers, the bonfire had to be cancelled but each attendee was asked to go back and reflect on everything that has transpired during the day.

Day three started with President Melvin Davis calling the third business session to order. The 3rd and final reading of the proposed budget was presented and the budget passed. President Melvin Davis conducted the Memorial Service for Chaplin Delphine Bridgewater.

The North Mississippi Conference - Sister JoEtta McClain (in for President Johnny Dumas) announced no deaths in the Conference. She lit a candle to continue life into the next year.

The South Mississippi Conference - President Lydia Lacey memorialized Sister Murlene Gaines (October 2015). A beautiful spirit who was very active in the Lay Organization and other components. She was a joy to be around.

The Central North Louisiana Conference - President Raymond Morrison presented representatives to memorialize deceased members. Sister Marsha White spoke on Mr. Frank Brown, who transitioned on June 2, 2016 - member of St. Matthew, Shreveport, LA - an usher, trustee, and active Local Lay member.

President Morrison spoke on Brother John Armstead, a faithful member and District Lay President.

The Louisiana Conference - President Maria Gauthier said deceased Louisiana Conference members had been memorialized during their Prayer Crusade. Brother Wesley Young, Cummings Temple (8th District Lay Chaplain) - faithful member of Cummings Temple and Sister Betty Hayes, Days Chapel (Lay Org. treasurer).

Each attendee was presented a certificate of attendance and their picture was taken with the Connectional Lay President, Dr. Willie Glover and Episcopal Lay President, Mr. Melvin Davis.

Dr. Willie C. Glover, Connectional Lay President conducted the election of officers. After hearing the Nominating Committee report and the Credential Committee report, the body moved to elect officers by a voice vote since the ballot was uncontested. Following the election, Dr. Glover installed the officers. The following persons were elected.

PROGRESSIVE PARLIAMENTARY POINTERS

POINT OF ORDER If a member believes that the rules of the assembly are being violated he can ,“raise a question of order”, make a Point of Order which calls upon the chair for a ruling and an enforcement of the regular rules.

A Point of Order is an Incidental Motion and the characteristics are as follows: Is in order when another has the floor, does not require a second, is not debatable, although with the chair’s approval, a member may be permitted to explain his point, is not amendable, is normally ruled upon by the chair, and cannot be reconsidered.

Every member who becomes aware of a violation of the rules has the right to insist on their enforcement. If the chair notices a breach, he corrects the matter immediately, but if he fails to do so, for whatever reason, any member can make the appropriate point of order.

EXAMPLE When a member notices that rules are being violated and will do harm if allowed to pass, the member rises, and without waiting for recognition, immediately addresses the chair as follows:

Member A: I rise to a point of order. [Or, “Point of Order!”]

Anyone who was previously speaking takes his seat.

The chair then asks the member to state his point of order.

Member A: I make the point of order that… Member “A” then takes his seat.

The chair then rules whether “the point of order is well taken” or is not well taken” stating the reason, which should be recorded in the minutes. Please see RONR 11th Edition pages 247255 for more details.

Tribute to the Legacy of Richard Allen Submitted by Pamela Tilley, Historiographer, CLO A special tribute to Bishop Gregory GM Ingram, Supervisor Jessica Ingram, Rev. Mark Tyler, President Cheryl Hammond Hopewell ,Walter Jeffers, The First Episcopal District , The artist and all who contributed to making our General Conference Celebratory experience a once in a lifetime series of events. It was an uplifting moment to come away and have lasting details to share with those that were not fortunate to attend.

The one detail I would like to lift up is the Richard Allen Mural on the side of the First District Building.

This mural is the one of the most efficient ways to teach a brief AME church history to anyone of any age.

In poster form each church or individual can learn 20 plus things, about the AME Church. It should be housed everywhere there is AME spaces. Having this poster, you can learn about the first buildings and stages of Bethel , the first church, Absalom Jones, Rosa Parks, The Four Horseman, Sarah Allen, the blessing of President Obama, Rev. Jarena Lee, “The walk out “ , the Anvil, and much more. The images of the poster inspires you to want and do more.

In Texas, the poster was enhanced on a hand painted canvas to be presented to churches celebrating over 100 years and it has inspired churches to get their own and teach. To God be the Glory.

Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) Raises $60,000 for CLO Scholarships and Disaster Relief Submitted by Bill Ayers, Co-Chair During the historic 50th Quadrennial Session of the African Methodist Episcopal Church General Conference and the celebration of the life of its legendary founder Bishop Richard Allen, the Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) sponsored a Breakfast to raise money for its Scholarship and Disaster Relief Funds. This is the second quadrennial session that

this Breakfast fundraiser has successfully met its monetary goal. At the 49th Quadrennial Session the CLO Breakfast Committee raised $50,000.

This year the Breakfast Committee reached its goal of raising $60,000.

This fundraiser was the brainchild of CLO President Willie C. Glover. He stated that, “We need to raise money above and beyond those allocated in the CLO’s budget to provide financial resources for CLO scholarships for qualified applicants and to be able to respond in a more meaningful financial manner to disasters around the globe”.

As a result of our successful fundraiser, in 2012, the CLO Scholarship Committee was able to give our young people scholarships in the amount of $5,000 in lieu of our normal $1,000.

This also meant that the CLO Disaster Relief Committee was able to give substantial funds to several disasters that happened in the US, Flint, Michigan, and on foreign soil including, Haiti, and Africa.

The fundraiser was a successful venture because of the outstanding support and response of the Episcopal District Presidents and their cadre of officers and others who had the responsibility of ensuring the success of their district’s participation. The event was also successful because of the teamwork, motivation and hard work of the Breakfast Committee. Because of those combined efforts, the breakfast was sold out with 1,000 people in attendance including Bishops, General Officers, Candidates, Pastors and Laity.

The Mistress of Ceremonies for the Breakfast was the Mayor of Flint, Michigan, the Honorable Dr. Karen Weaver. She is a member of Vernon Chapel AME Church in Flint, Michigan where the Reverend Robert Blake is pastor. President Glover and co-chairs Ayers and Hammond

Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) Raises $60,000 for CLO Scholarships and Disaster Relief (continued) Hopewell presented the Mayor with Books and flowers at the programs conclusion as a thank you for her exemplary service as our MC. Those in attendance witnessed an outstanding program with some of the finest talent in Philadelphia including award-winning songwriter/singer Annette Hardeman, the 57th Street Band under the leadership of the Rev. Richard Norris, Jr., and the dance artistry of Ingrid Broadax.

Included in the program was a prayer for the AME Church, Sandra Anthony, prayer for the CLO, Beverly Nutall and Prayer for the food, Chinelo Tyler. Included in the prayer for the AME Church was a prayer from a compilation of Prayers and Litanies by Sister Mary F. McKinney, the wife of the late Joseph C. McKinney. A copy of her book was also presented to Mayor Weaver. Jerry Turner stated the occasion and Cheryl Hammond Hopewell introduced the Mistress of Ceremonies.

This year we involved our young people throughout every planning phase. This included a YouTube presentation by Robin Angela Smith that was viewed and used as a Breakfast marketing tool across the country. Additionally, Robin A. Smith, (Prayer) and Chinalo Tyler, (blessing of the food) served as program participants. They along with Martinique Mix, Felicia Commodore and Walter Jeffers rounded out the young people who served on this years fundraising Breakfast Committee.

Other hardworking Committee members included, Richard Bowden, Darwin Eldridge, Anna Johnson, Kathy Drayton, Mark Mayo, E. Pat Thomas, Anita Rankin and Leslie Tyler. Thanks to Jeffers, Drayton, Bowden and Eldridge, we initiated a new method of payment for Breakfast tickets using BrownPaperTicket and Pay Pal as vendors so that potential ticket purchasers could go on line to buy tickets – a first for the CLO. President Glover praised and lauded this year’s co-chairs, William “Bill” Ayers and Cheryl Hammond Hopewell, for their leadership, hard work, teamwork and commitment to ensuring the success of the Breakfast. He also praised the members of the Breakfast Committee for their steadfast support and outstanding commitment to the project. Ayers and Hammond Hopewell also thanked the Committee members for their unique skills and talents they collectively brought to the table, the program participants and the host and hostesses for a job well done.

The Right Reverend William Phillips DeVeaux, Lay Commission Chairman, closed the Breakfast by extending congratulatory remarks to President Glover for the excellent work he has done as CLO President and for his leadership in sponsoring this Breakfast fundraiser for the last two quadrennials. He also thanked the participants for investing in young people through their ticket purchase. He noted that because of this effort, and their financial support, students who apply and receive CLO scholarships would reap the benefits of their giving for years to come.

The Connectional Lay Organization Responds to Disaster Relief Efforts From nations to cities, from towns to families, catastrophe is a feature of life that, at least once, will grab us all by the throat. There is no way to go through life without some disaster — environmental, criminal, biological, military — that will afflict every person on the planet and turn their lives and hearts inside out and upside down. When these times come it is natural for us to mourn, and mourn often for a long time.

But how much is enough mourning and how much is too much? How long should nations or religions mourn past catastrophes? There is, of course, a difference between mourning, commemoration and the honor of memory. We can permanently honor the past, honor those who we have lost on specific days and at specific times. But mourning is different, mourning is a deep and constant state, and when it goes on too long it can harm us, make us half of what we could be, even destroy our better selves and make us bitter or violent.

What do you say to people in such circumstances? Do you mourn with them? Do you try to comfort them with some rethinking of their situation? Do you dare, when in fact there is often very little you can do for them in the short term? Mourning and comforting mourners in the face of catastrophe is a wrenching challenge to our very humanity.

Ancient wisdom of religious traditions sees this as looking for God’s hand in all situations, trust in God, see everything as for the good, or as the will of God. As we all face moments in our family, our nation or on our planet when neighbors are going through a living hell, we need to work harder at giving enough comfort and support to those in catastrophe. They need to have the space and the time and the support to think again about the catastrophe, to discover meaning and purpose to life, and thus help rebuild themselves and their communities. This is what we owe each other as human beings, as neighbors on this planet.

The disaster relief committee of the Connectional Lay Organization recommended to the Global President, Dr. Willie C. Glover to contribute $5000.00 each to The 8th Episcopal District and AME Service and Development Agency (SADA). The Connectional Lay Organization is proud to support the relief efforts of our brothers and sisters in our Zion.

“MORE THAN LIP SERVICE” Alice Belden Chaplain CLO General Conference Information

“Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross despising the shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Foe consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your soul.”

Heb.12:1-3 NKJV The real evidence of a true believer is a changed life. A changed life begins with obedience to God. A changed life means you will have to stop doing certain things and start doing others, while God begins to change your heart and desires once you have surrendered your life to Him. He still gives you the freedom to decide, just how much of your life you will let Him control.

Many people today accept a number of legends about Christianity with the result that they never respond to Jesus as He really is. The writer of Hebrews is uncertain but has been ascribed to Paul, Barnabas, Luke , Apollos and various others but it encourages us to live with and eye toward the cloud of witnesses who watch us from heaven (12:1) and th look to Jesus who sits at God’s right hand (12:2). Throw off every hindrance and run with perserverance is one of the most moving passages of Scriptures, one that should be memorized by every Christian. In fact it should move all true believers to run and keep running the Christian race of life. It points us to the most critical instruction given, to get rid of all excess weight and any other worldly sinful entanglements that slows you down. Jesus has run this race as well as the crowd, the former heroes of the Christian faith. They all once were participants, but now they are spectators, looking down from the balcony of heaven. They are actually watching your race and performance because they are vitally interested in how you commit yourself to the cause of Jesus. Failure to remain disciplined, faithful and obedient runs the risk of disqualification. Obedience is encouraged so that Christians will guard themselves against sin and the consequence of loss rewards. Continuing in the faith to Christ’s commands gain a full reward. “For we all must appear before the judgment of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body whether good or bad. Every person who ever lives must keep an appointment with Christ at the final judgment. Believers will be rewarded.

Others will be punished eternally.

“So let’s not allow ourselves to become fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up or quit.” Gal.6:9 The motivation for doing good has many parts. Doing good provides a basis for further witness of the gospel’s restoring power. Jesus stands in the midst, confirming our faithfulness as Judge of our witness. He holds the keys.

Resolution in Loving Memory of Sister Eddie L. White Resolution in Loving Memory of Sister Eddie L. White According to His tender mercy, God, who is infinite in His wisdom, has seen fit to move from our midst, our beloved sister in Christ, by means of death on the 22nd day of March, 2016.

Thou my everlasting portion, More than friend or life to me All along my pilgrim journey, Savior, let me walk with Thee.

Lead me through the vale of shadows, Bear me o’er life’s fitful sea; Then the gate of life eternal, May I enter Lord with thee.

WHEREAS, we the officers and members of the Thirteenth Episcopal District Lay Organization, African Methodist Episcopal Church, feel it is befitting to express our sympathy to the family during the passing of a faithful layperson, Sister Eddie L White. We commend you to Him who knoweth all things and; WHEREAS, Sister Eddie L White accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was an active supporter of the laity of the Church and; WHEREAS, Sister White was a devoted member of the Kairos A.M.E. Church in Nashville TN and Thirteenth Episcopal District Lay Organization.

WHEREAS, she served as Thirteenth Episcopal District Lay Organization Director of Lay Activities from 2013 to 12016 and; WHEREAS, Sister Eddie L White was the recipient of the Tennessee Conference Legacy Award at the Thirteenth Episcopal District Lay Organization Outstanding Layperson of the Year Award Banquet in 2016 and; WHEREAS, Sister Eddie L White served as a member of the Connectional Lay Organization Director of Lay Activities Staff and was active in various community, and church organizations and; WHEREAS, Sister Eddie L White was part of a loving and caring family who accepts the will of a Sovereign God in the passing of their love one and; WHEREAS, we believe the words of Jesus in John 14 that encourages us to “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you;” THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we bow in humble submission to Him who never makes a mistake and extend words of encouragement to the family in their time of sorrow. You are in our sincere prayers. Sister Eddie L White will be greatly missed.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be given to the family and a copy kept in the Thirteenth Episcopal District Lay Organization historical archives.

What does the Bicentennial mean to the African Methodist Church? What would our founding father say regarding the planned celebrations, pomp and circumstance? What would he say regarding our Connectional Lay Economic Development Corp? Did we hear his message on self-empowerment?

CLEDC’s mission statement says the purpose of the CLEDC is to support the religious principles of the African Methodist Episcopal Church by establishing and /or supporting AME schools, church buildings and properties, evangelism and programs focused on the relief of the poor distressed or underprivileged.

The CLEDC Officers and Directors have held those goals to the standard of excellence. Our investments are prudent and wise. Please begin a membership or renew your present membership status. NECROLOGY Mrs. Daisy Marilyn Johnson Hardeman, age 101, passed away peacefully on Sept. 4, 2016, in Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Hardeman graduated from Morris Brown College and served as a devoted educator for over 40 years including the cities of Athens, Atlanta, Madison and Macon, GA; Philadelphia, PA and parts of New Jersey. Mrs. Hardeman was a very active member of the A. M. E. Church including membership in various organizations within the Church and was a longtime member of Flipper Temple A. M. E. Church. She was the wife of the late Rev. Dr. Gabriel S. Hardeman Sr. for 68 years. At her husband’s side she served many A. M. E. Churches in the state of GA. including Bethel (Athens), St. Luke (Cartersville), Turner Chapel (Marietta) and St. Paul (Macon). She also aided her husband in the founding of Hickman Temple A.M.E. Church in Philadelphia, PA. Mrs. Daisy M. Hardeman was also preceded in death by her son Rev. Gabriel S. Hardeman, Jr. and is survived by grandson Michael Hardeman (Sunny), daughter-in-law Annette Hardeman, Goddaughter and caregiver Rev. Conitras M. Houston and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Celebration Of Life Services for Mrs. Daisy M. Hardeman will be held on Sat., Sept. 10, 2016 at 11 am at Flipper Temple A. M. E. FAREWELL TO SHIMI SETH MANYANE The Agnes B Hildebrand A M E Church in the Ga-Rankuwa District, Mangena Mokone Conference in the 19th Episcopal District has lost one of its worthy members, Shimi Seth Manyane. He departed after a fortnight’s indisposition.

Seth was a fonder member of the Agnes B Hildebrand A M E Church in Mabopane and served under a host of pastors at different times. Being well disposed to the Church, Seth held different offices in the local church, the District, the Conference and the Episcopal District Lay Organisation.

Seth served a President of the Lay Organisation in the local church, the District, the Conference and was First Vice President at the Episcopal level at different times.

He was elected inaugural Recording Secretary of the 19th Episcopal District Lay organisation in 1984.

He attended four Biennial Lay Conventions and three General Conferences and had the honour to serve in the Episcopal Committee in the 2000 General Conference.

This worthy son of the A M E Church caught the eye of successive Bishops who appointed him to various committees.

Seth leaves behind his dear wife Lavinia, two children – a son and a daughter and three grand children.

We thank the Rt Rev Bishop PJM Kawimbe for his comforting eulogy on the occasion of Seth’s funeral on Saturday, 03 September 2016.

NECROLOGY Obituary Carl “Big C” Mason departed this life on Friday March 25, 2016. He was born to the late Minnie-Bell Paige Mason and Alfred Mason on September 6, 1937 in Harrison Georgia. “Big C” was followed mo­ments later by his surviving twin brother Carlton. Carl was officially the eldest of the two as he was proud to share with anyone that would listen. Carlton is left to mourn this great loss with their sister, ltonia M. Lord.

Carl was preceded in death by elder brother Alfred “Sarge” Mason, as well as sisters Althea Dean Ma­son and Christine Mason. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, Carl is survived by a special niece, Annie L. Mason, his long-time caretaker.

After graduating from Thomas J. Elder High School in Sandersville, GA in 1956 Carl was drafted by the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. After returning home with an Honorable Discharge from the Army, “Big C” began employment with the Aero division of Lockheed Martin at their Marietta, Ga. site. Though Big C formally worked on the surface structure of airplanes, he was a proud member of the labor union- Local 709 International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. It was through this association that Carl was most fulfilled. His dedication was rewarded in part by being bestowed the honor of receiving Lockheed’s “True Blue Award” before his retirement, something he held very dear.

Big C understood the importance of formal education, and he put his money where his mouth was in support of many family and community members who were working to achieve that goal. He was a very vocal supporter of Atlanta’s Morris Brown College and held her dear. He often said, “Morris Brown gave many people a chance when others wouldn’t.”

If Big C loved to work in anything more than the organized labor movement it was the Democratic Party and the church, the A.M.E. Church to be specific. Again his hard work and dedication was formally recognized many times over by Democrats across the state and the members and board of the African Methodist Episcopal church, all honors he held sacred.

Carl “Big C” Mason loved his family, the A.M.E. Church, the State of Georgia, the labor union, and the Democratic Party. His greatest love was The Lord, and it is in that belief we gratefully celebrate Big C. We know heaven is an oasis and free from blemish, but if there was anything out of place we believe that on Friday March 25, 2016 they got organized.

Mention the initial “Big C” to practically anyone around the conference and they will know who you are talking about. Bro. Carl Mason is a twin born in Washington County Georgia. After his discharge from the army Bro. Carl Mason returned to Georgia and decided to reside in Atlanta.

Bro. Mason retired after a distinguished career at Lockheed Martin Corporation. He founded the nonprofit United Community Service in the Dixie Hills neighborhood which provided weekly Saturday breakfast, yearly Back-to-School Jambo-rees and backpack distribution. In 2003, he received the True Blue Award from the Georgia Labor Awards Committee for his dedicated service to the cause of working men and women. At an early age he joined the Springfield A.M.E Church in Harrison, Georgia. As he grew from a boy to a young man he con-tinued to be an active member of the church by serving as a member of the Steward Board. Because of his born leadership skills, Bro. Mason was asked by his Pastor to organize the local Lay Organization at Springfield A.M.E. Church where he served as their first president. In Atlanta, Bro. Mason joined Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church on Kennedy Street. There he served as a Steward Pro Tem, Trustee Pro Tem and Treasurer for 18 years. He also organized their local Lay Organization serving in any capacity required. In 1974, Bro. Mason led the movement of the church from 578 Kennedy Street to 4650 Cascade Road in Southwest Atlanta.

Bro. Carl Mason moved his membership to Newberry Chapel A.M.E. Church, where he is presently serving faithfully. He has served as Steward Pro Tem and Trustee Pro Tem of his local church. While serving under the pastorate of Dr. Crawford he organized his third Lay Organization. It was an honor for Bro. Mason to introduce the Organized Lay Organization to his fellow members of African Methodism. Under his tutelage many of these individuals continued to grow and become leaders in the Lay Organization. Bro. Mason has attended almost every Annual Conference since his move to Atlanta. If senior members of his church family that wanted to attend the Annual Conference he would provide the transportation. He wanted anyone interested in know-ing how the church operates to witness the process. Their family members knew they were in good hands with Bro. Mason. He has attended every General Conference from 1972 to 2004. He was elected to be a General Conference Delegate for the first time in 2004, an honor he will always remember. He has attended seven Lay Biennials through the years. He at-tended District and Conference Lay meetings until his health prevented his participation. Although Bro. Mason was not al-ways able to come he does faithfully send his dues to the West Atlanta District. He is a huge supporter of the Lay Organization and their many activities. From Lay Person of the Year Banquet to Annual Conference Lay Night — “Big C” will be present. Through the years he has worked on numerous campaigns from Bishops to Connectional Officers to Governors. Bro. Mason worked with Dr. Katheryn M. Brown campaign for the first female Connectional Vice-President and first female Connectional President of the Lay Organization. After her election, he served on numerous Connectional Lay Organization Committees. He led the Lay delegation for the campaign to elect Bishop Preston Williams. He also served as a driver for Bishop Bearden whenever needed. He has supported every Bishop appointed to the Sixth Episcopal District. As a member of the laity he was always willing to serve his church wherever he was needed. Bro. Delegation from the African Methodist Episcopal Church, led by Bishop John White, works to establish an AME presence in Brazil BRIEF REPORT OF AME DELEGATION TO BRAZIL From July 11-13, 2016 a delegation from the African Methodist Episcopal Church visited the Comunidade Cristã Metodista (CCM) - Christian Methodist Community - in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

‘The Comunidade Cristã Metodista (Christian Methodist Community – CCM) is pastored by the Rev. Paulo Mudesto and his wife the Rev. Mirian Mudesto.

The following persons formed the AME delegation: Bishop John F. White (Presiding Prelate, 16th and 18th Episcopal Districts); the Rev. Dr. George F. Flowers (Executive Director, Department of Global Witness and Ministry); the Rev. Mashod A. Evans (Pastor, St. John AME Church-- Birmingham, Alabama) and Mr. John Thomas III (General Board Member, At-Large). The group was also joined by Ms. Kiratiana Freelon, a Chicago native and AME member currently working as a freelance journalist in Brazil.

Efforts to establish an AME presence in Brazil date back to the 1996 World Methodist Conference in Rio de Janeiro when several persons approached the AME delegation about the possibility of starting an AME Church in Brazil. Bishop Carolyn Tyler Guidry and the late Bishop Sarah Frances Davis both met with members of the Methodist Church in Brazil who were interested in joining the AME Church. In February 2016, the Rev. Paulo Mudesto and the Rev. Mirian Mudesto were invited to attend the Dominican Republic Annual Conference. Upon their return to Brazil, the Congregation voted to formally petition the AME Church for membership the delegation visit is a response to this petition The team met with the clergy and lay leaders of the congregation as well as attended a specially convened church conference. The delegation was warmly and genuinely received by the membership and ministerial staff. Bishop White preached the Sunday Service after the Church Conference. The team also visited the outreach programs of the church including an urban youth outreach program and a relationship with a chemical dependency treatment center.

The delegation will present its report to the Council of Bishops after the General Conference to determine the next steps regarding admission of the Christian Methodist Community (CCM) to the denomination.

BLACK HERITAGE - RICHARD ALLEN Richard Allen was born into slavery on February 14, 1760, on the Delaware property of Benjamin Chew. When he was a child Allen and his family were sold to Stokeley Sturgis, who had a plantation in Delaware. When Sturgis had financial problems he sold Richard’s mother and three of his five siblings. Allen had an older brother and sister left with him and the three began to attend meetings of the local Methodist Society, which was welcoming to slaves and free blacks. They were encouraged by their master Sturgis, although he was unconverted. Richard taught himself to read and write.

He joined the Methodists at age 17. He began evangelizing and attracted criticism from local slave owners. Allen and his brother redoubled their efforts for Sturgis so no one could say his slaves did not do well because of religion.

The Reverend Freeborn Garrettson, who had freed his own slaves in 1775, began to preach in Delaware. He was among many Methodist and Baptist ministers after the American Revolutionary War who encouraged slaveholders to emancipate their people.

When Garrettson visited the Sturgis plantation to preach, Allen’s master was touched by this declaration and began to give consideration to the thought that holding slaves was sinful.[5] Sturgis was soon convinced that slavery was wrong and offered his slaves an opportunity to buy their freedom. Allen performed extra work to earn the money and bought his freedom in 1780, after which he changed his name from “Negro Richard” to “Richard Allen” Allen’s first wife was named Flora. They were married on October 19, 1790. She worked very closely with him during the early years of establishing the church from 1787 to 1799. They attended church school and worked together purchasing land,

which was eventually donated to the church or rented out to families. Flora Allen died on March 11, 1801, after a long illness. Scholars do not know if they had any children. After moving to Philadelphia, Allen married Sarah Bass, a freed slave from Virginia. She had moved to Philadelphia as a child and the couple met around 1800.

Richard and Sarah Allen had six children. Sarah Allen was highly active in what became the AME Church and is called the “Founding Mother” Allen was qualified as a preacher in 1784 at the Christmas Conference, the founding of the Methodist Church in North America at Baltimore, Maryland. He was one of the two black attendees of the conference along with Harry Hosier, but neither were permitted a vote during deliberations.

Allen was subsequently allowed to lead services at 5 AM, which were attended mostly by blacks. Eschewing Asbury and Hosier’s circuit riding practices, he moved to Philadelphia, a center of free blacks.

In 1786, Allen became a preacher at St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but was restricted to early morning services.

As he attracted more black congregants, the church vestry ordered them to be in a separate area for worship. Allen also regularly preached on the commons near the church, slowly gaining a congregation of nearly 50, and supporting himself with a variety of odd jobs.

Allen and Absalom Jones, also a Methodist preacher, resented the white congregants’ segregating the blacks for worship and prayer. They decided to leave St. George’s to create indepen-

BLACK HERITAGE - RICHARD ALLEN (CONTINUED) dent worship for African Americans. This brought some opposition from the white church as well as the more established blacks of the community.

In 1787, Allen and Jones led the black members out of St. George’s Methodist Church. They formed the Free African Society (FAS), a nondenominational mutual aid society that assisted fugitive slaves and new migrants to the city. Allen, along with Absalom Jones, William Gray and William Wilcher, found an available lot on Sixth Street near Lombard. Allen negotiated a price and purchased this lot in 1787 to build a church, but it was years before they had a building. Now occupied by Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, this is the oldest parcel of real estate in the United States owned continuously by African Americans.

Over time, most of the Free African Society members chose to affiliate with the Episcopal Church, as many blacks in Philadelphia had been Anglicans since the 1740s. They founded the African Church with Absalom Jones. It was accepted as a parish congregation and opened its doors on July 17, 1794, as the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. In 1795, Absalom Jones was ordained as a deacon, and in 1804 as a priest, becoming the first black ordained in the United States as an Episcopal priest.

Allen and others wanted to continue in the Methodist practice. Allen called their congregation the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME).

Converting a blacksmith shop on Sixth Street, the leaders opened the doors of Bethel AME Church on July 29, 1794. At first affiliated with the larger Methodist Episcopal Church, they had to rely on visiting white ministers for communion. In recognition of his leadership and preaching, in 1799, Allen was ordained as the first black Methodist minister by Bishop Francis Asbury. He and the congregation still had to continue to negotiate white oversight and deal with white elders of the denomination. A decade after its founding, the AME Church had 457 members, and, in 1813, it had 1,272.

In 1816, Allen united four African-American congregations of the Methodist Church in Phila-

delphia; Salem, New Jersey; Delaware and Maryland. Together they founded the independent denomination of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), the first fully independent black denomination in the United States. On April 10, 1816, the other ministers elected Allen as their first bishop. The African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest and largest formal institution in black America.

From 1797 until his death in 1831, Allen and Sara operated a station on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves.

Some “DID YOU KNOW” Facts about Richard Allen • Allen is honored with a feast day, March 26, on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA).

• In 2001, the Richard Allen Preparatory School, a charter school, was opened in his name in southwest Philadelphia.

• In 2002, Molefi Kete Asante named Richard Allen as one of the 100 Greatest African Americans.

• In 2010, a park in the Philadelphia suburb of Radnor Township was named for him.

• The Richard Allen Homes, a public housing project in Philadelphia, were named for him.

• A street in Cambridge, Massachusetts is named after him.

• Allen University, a historically black university in South Carolina, was renamed in Allen’s honor when it moved from Cokesbury to Columbia in 1880.

• A stamp honoring Allen was issued by the United States Postal Service in February 2016, with a first-day ceremony in Philadelphia, as part of the ongoing Black Heritage Series.

• A life-size statue of Allen by Fern Cunningham Terry was erected by Mother Bethel Church July 10, 2016.

• A mural “The Legacy of Bishop Richard Allen and AME Church Mural” was unveiled on July 4, 2016 at 38th and Market Streets in West Philadelphia.

SUBMITTED BY: SISTER LASEAN R SHELTON FIRST DISTRICT LAY DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS With the general election coming up and all other huge headlines taking place on a National level, the First Episcopal District continues to keep a laser focus on what is needed to spread the good news of Christ while keeping the spirit of Richard Allen alive.

Some of the biggest highlights of course was the spectacular experience in Philadelphia—home of Mother Allen where the distinguished statue of Richard Allen was erected during the spirit week of the General Conference!

People from the world came to experience this moment and the First District showed out with the hospitality and Stewardship to make this event run smoothly. To this day, General Conference is a continual focal point of conversation because our very own Bishop Gregory G.M Ingram and his illustrious wife Supervisor Rev. Jessica Ingram left no stones unturned to ensure a great well thought out event that was filled with Christian values and amazing teaching and training opportunities.

The First District also felt pride when Bishop Ingram “paused” all business meetings to address the killings of unarmed black men and the support of Black Lives Matter by giving the youth an opportunity to lead the march against police brutality and killings on the streets of Philadelphiathe home of brotherly love.

Pastor Barbara Ross shook her head: “I just don’t get it,” she said. This was a common thought amongst 1000’s of peaceful We Speak - Page 27

protestors from the A.M.E Church that halted General Conference activities to address an ongoing issue in the Black community.

The march headlined the newest “hashtags” of Alton Sterling who was killed by police officers in Baton Rouge, La., and Philando Castile who was killed during a routine traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minn. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, said he told the officer he had a licensed gun in the car, and was reaching for his license as requested when the officer shot him.

Castile had a permit to carry a weapon, and he had the right to own a firearm under the 2nd Amendment.

Philadelphia clergy and Black Lives Matter organizers led the protest that monumental evening beginning at the Philadelphia Convention Center with a group prayer. The march started with proud members of the AME church- their voices bellowed throughout the streets of Philadelphia with chants like “Show me what theology looks like” / “This is what theology looks like!” and “No justice, no peace!” echoing off buildings and overpasses as they went by. This magnetized onlookers to join and have their voices echo these chants as well.

Some carried signs that read: “Stop shooting us!”; “If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention”; and “Enough is enough.” Their journey – peaceful and devoid of the intentional arrests at a similar protest Wednesday – concluded at the Arch Street United Methodist Church

on North Broad Street.

The Rev. Mark Tyler, pastor of Mother Bethel Church, said men and women of all faiths are united against a common enemy. “We all stand against the same fight against the dehumanization of black and brown bodies.”

Young members of the Lay Organization as well as YPD shouted “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” “OUR LIVES MATTER” to the top of their lungs throughout the streets of Philadelphia!

Truly this was an example of what Social Action looks like and peacefully ensuring that our voices are heard.

It did not stop there—the First District Lay Annual meeting hosted by Bethel AME Wilmington maintained the vision of Matthew 28:16-20 with spirit filled worship, amazing workshops and each member leaving with a new commitment to be the walking billboard for the Lay Organization while being informed about policy, technology, the purpose of proper PR for the Church, legislation and embracing the new members.

New members of the Lay looked in amazing as they experienced their first District Lay meeting and verbalized that they felt confident in being part of the teaching and training arm of the Church. They had a chance to get a firsthand look at how legislation was

passed and the way that bills are passed. A new member mentioned that she had no idea that the Lay played such a monumental role in the AME Church—she said that breaking down and said methods in our workshops helped her understand the process better.

Brother Malcolm Coley lent his talents and assisted in teaching the Lay about Technology and how to properly use your devices i.e., smart phones, iPads, tablets and other devices. This workshop was insightful as it helped with the notion given by the First District Director of Public Relations stating that we as the Lay need to be a walking billboard and always vocal as well as globally seen on social media to keep the Church alive.

Second Episcopal District A.M. E. Bicentennial Kicks-Off with Torch Run

Approximately Eighty runners were expected to participate in a two day event commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Torch Run began July 2, at the Richard Allen marker in Dover, Delaware, and ended July 3, 2016 at Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church in Philadelphia.

Sister Edith “Pat” Thomas represented the Lay Organization of the Second Episcopal District, and carried the Torch for its 89th mile into the city. The final mile was carried by Rev. Glenda Hodges, Co-Chair of the event.

The highlight of the Run was the unveiling of the six-foot

bronze statue of Bishop Richard Allen which now graces the

courtyard on the grounds of Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Pat reports that this event gave her an overwhelming sense of history, and a greater appreciation of the sacrifices that were made by the founders of our great Zion. “As I observed the group, there were few dry eyes in the crowd as the Statue was unveiled.

My body was tired, but my spirit was rejuvenated,” remarked Pat. She further stated, “Imagine, this statue of Bishop Richard Allen is the first of an African American in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.”

It is especially worth noting, that The American Cancer Society partnered with the A.M.E Church to sponsor the Torch Run, and to bring awareness to the work of the ACS.

Connectional Lay Organization Raises $60,000.00 for Scholarships and Disaster Relief

By William “Bill” Ayers, Co Chair During the historic 50th Quadrennial Session of the African Methodist Episcopal Church General Conference and the celebration of the life of its legendary founder Bishop Richard Allen, the Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) sponsored a Breakfast to raise money for its Scholarship and Disaster Relief Funds. This is the second quadrennial session that this Breakfast fundraiser has successfully met its monetary goal. At the 49th Quadrennial Session the CLO Breakfast Committee raised $50,000. This year the Breakfast Committee reached its goal of raising $60,000.

This fundraiser was the brainchild of CLO President Dr. Willie C. Glover. He stated that, “We need to raise money above and beyond that allocated in the CLO’s budget to provide financial resources for CLO scholarships for qualified applicants and to be able to respond in a more meaningful financial manner to disasters around the globe”.

As a result of our successful fundraiser, in 2012, the CLO Scholarship Committee was able to give our young people scholarships in the amount of $5,000 in lieu of our normal $1,000. This also meant that the CLO Disaster Relief Committee was able to give substantial funds to several disasters that happened in the U.S., Flint, Michigan, and on foreign soil including, Haiti, and Africa.

The fundraiser was a successful venture because of the outstanding support and response of the Episcopal District Presidents and their cadre of officers

and others who had the responsibility of ensuring the success of their district’s participation. The event was also successful because of the teamwork, motivation and hard work of the Breakfast Committee. Because of those combined efforts, the breakfast was sold out with 1,000 people in attendance including Bishops, General Officers, Candidates, Pastors and Laity.

The Mistress of Ceremonies for the Breakfast was the Mayor of Flint, Michigan, the Honorable Dr. Karen Weaver. She is a member of Vernon Chapel AME Church in Flint, Michigan where the Reverend Robert Blake is pastor. President Glover and co-chairs William “Bill” Ayers and Cheryl Hammond Hopewell presented the Mayor with books and flowers at the programs conclusion as a thank you for her exemplary service as our MC. Those in attendance witnessed an outstanding program with some of the finest talent in Philadelphia including award-winning songwriter/singer Annette Hardeman, the 57th Street Band under the leadership of the Rev. Richard Norris, II, and the dance artistry of Ingrid Broadax. Included in the program was a prayer for the AME Church, Sandra Anthony, prayer for the CLO, Beverly Nutall and a prayer for the food, Chinelo Tyler. Included in the prayer for the AME Church was a prayer from a compilation of Prayers and Litanies by Sister Mary F. McKinney, the wife of the late Joseph C. McKinney. A copy of her book was also presented

to Mayor Weaver. Jerry Turner stated the occasion and Cheryl Hammond Hopewell introduced the Mistress of Ceremonies.

This year the committee thought it so important to involved our young people throughout every planning phase. This included a YouTube presentation

by Robin Angela Smith that was viewed and used as a Breakfast marketing tool across the country.

Additionally, Robin, (Prayer) and Chinalo Tyler, (blessing of the food) served as program participants. They along with Martinique Mix, Felicia Commodore and Walter Jeffers rounded out the young adults who served on this year’s fundraising Breakfast Committee.

Other hardworking committee members included, Richard Bowden, Darwin Eldridge, Anna Johnson, Kathy Drayton, Mark Mayo, E. Pat Thomas, Anita Rankin and Leslie Tyler. Thanks to Jeffers, Drayton, Bowden and Eldridge, we initiated a new method of payment for Breakfast tickets using Brown Paper Tickets and Pay Pal as vendors so that potential ticket purchasers could go on line to buy tickets – a first for the CLO.

President Glover praised and lauded this year’s cochairs, William “Bill” Ayers and Cheryl Hammond Hopewell, for their leadership, teamwork and commitment to ensuring the success of the Breakfast.

He also praised the members of the Breakfast Committee for their steadfast support and outstanding commitment to the project. Ayers and Hammond Hopewell also thanked the Committee members for their unique skills and talents they collectively brought to the table, the program participants and the host and hostesses for a job well done.

The Right Reverend William Phillips DeVeaux, Lay Commission Chairman, closed the Breakfast by extending congratulatory remarks to President Glover for the excellent work he has done as CLO also thanked the attendees for investing in young people through their ticket purchase. He noted that because of this effort, and their financial support, students who apply and receive CLO scholarships would reap the benefits of their giving for years to come.

Lay Mission Eyeglass Project Huge Success

The Second Episcopal District’s Lay Organization was pleased to participate with Rev. Jonathan Weaver of Greater Mt. Nebo A.M.E. church in his latest Mission’s project to collect eye glasses for his 2016 Missions trip to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa. The District collected nearly two thousand pairs of glasses along with $1.00 per pair to cover the cost of luggage fees for shipping.

Rev. Weaver and his entourage departed on August 2, 2016, and returned on August 17. Dr. Raymond Nelson, who traveled with Rev. Weaver and provided medical assistance to hundreds of people, reported that the Missions trips are always so rewarding. In addition to distributing 500 pairs of glasses, his dedicated team of doctors and nurses treated patients with malaria, typhoid fever, callora, fungal skin infections, pneumonia and provided HIV testing. Dresses made from pillow cases were presented to some of the children.

Rev. Weaver expressed that he was overwhelmed by the support of the District’s Lay Organization, and gave praise to God for the efforts. Dr. Nelson expressed, “The team that went with us was energetic, aggressive and compassionate about their duties. Our members were spiritually engaging and allowed themselves to be used by God to minister and administer aid to our guests.”

Rev. Weaver, Dr. Nelson and the members of the team were able to leave medicines, and the additional glasses that were not distributed with the doctors and clinics located in the townships.

General Conference Reflections Valerie Gowens Terry, Virginia Conference It was an awesome experience to be in attendance at such a historic event as the 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was evident a lot of people put a lot of time and effort into making this event happen. Wow! Kudos to all involved. It was so nice to spend time with other AME folk from around the world. This was my first time attending as a delegate, and I am appreciative and honored for the opportunity to serve.

First, let’s look at the business aspect of the Conference. It is amazing how much business there is to accomplish during the scheduled meeting timeframe. The paperless Conference concept was a good idea.

The college students who served as technical support staff members were extremely valuable in helping resolve issues. I’m looking forward to seeing the paperless Conference in its fully operational form at the next Conference.

A few observations about efficiency: v Our Bishops are called, competent, and effective. While presiding over business sessions, each one conducted himself/herself with the utmost respect for the process and the people. Might it not be prudent to give a global recognition of the Bishops’ contributions and dispense with the individual delegation commendations? v I appreciate the historical significance of the Episcopal Committee’s procession. In the interest of time, however, as the Committee enters, the Chair could acknowledge it in such a matter that all in attendance can recognize its significance. Then, allow for the continuation of other business until the Committee reaches the place where it is ready to give its report, or have the Committee members use a quicker pace. I am aware that historical protocol must be observed. v Instead of individuals calling for distribution of voting devices, marshals could retrieve and distribute the devices at the beginning of each business session so all delegates have them when needed. v Legislation could be numbered when posted for viewing pre-Convention to facilitate following along with the Revisions Committee for those who review the legislation in advance. When deciding which pieces of legislation will be presented at the Conference, the Revisions Committee could document the reasons for those not being presented and post that information for review by the delegation prior to the first reading. Hopefully, the passage of bill number GGB6 (CONVO) will help expedite the legislation process at the next Conference.

Worship. The music and liturgical dance ministries were spirit-filled and did not disappoint. Most importantly, the sermons were thought-provoking, meaningful, and awe-inspiring. I am thankful for the Bishops and other preachers who shared their anointed gifts with us.

Prayerfully, the AME Church will continue to move forward and do the things that are pleasing in the Lord’s sight.

To God be the glory for the things He blessed us to accomplish at the General Conference.

A Millenials View of the 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the A.M.E. Church

Going to the General Conference as an observer in previous years, I always felt a tad removed to say the least, from the election process. This year, as a delegate, I was pleasantly surprised with the changes that had been made. Everything was very out in the open and there were no more “back room meetings” in between each voting ballot. This made things quicker and easier in my opinion. My grandfather (Rev. William Porter, deceased) used to say that Jesus only comes through twice during the General Conference, and that is during the opening and closing worship services. Although he was joking, unfortunately he still wasn’t too far from the truth.

As a young adult delegate, I saw a few things that I probably shouldn’t have. At first, I was sadden by some moves and then some moves angered me. Looking back, there are a few lessons to take with me should I be elected again to attend the General Conference as a delegate. The first is that people are people, and they will fall short every time. Instead of forcing my expectations on others, I should instead accept them for who they are and give them the freedom to be completely and authentically themselves.

The second lesson is to look for the positive in every situation. Often times, when we get in our feelings, it’s easier to let the anger, sadness, bitterness, and resentment to get the best of us and as a result getting lost in it. I was grateful to have my mother with me throughout the General Conference and she helped me to keep things in perspective. Instead of being miserable about the negative which tends to be more obvious, look for the little reasons to smile. Once you realize how many little reasons there are, it helps with letting go of all the negative reasons to be upset.

The third is that everything happens exactly the way it’s supposed to. Even when things don’t make sense, or go your way, know that there is always a greater plan, God’s plan. From my experience as a young adult, it’s pretty safe to say that His plan is always the best in any situation.

Finally, the 200th Celebration of the General Conference was quite eventful. The worship services were spirit filled and I learned a lot of lessons and did a lot of growing. It is my prayer that the only thing we do differently in future General Conferences is that we have a little more Jesus and that instead of leaving after Opening, He stays throughout.

The 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference for the A.M.E Church: A Millennial’s View

By Adam Johnston, Young Adult Delegate WNCC Webster’s Dictionary defines family as a group of people who are related to each other or, are alike in some way. While all AME’s may not be blood related, we all are alike in some way due to the teachings and leadership under Richard and Sarah Allen and of Christ Jesus. The primary theme that I took from General Conference was family or, at least the results of what family can produce when it comes together. Let me be clear before I give you my full experiences and opinion of General Conference, “No family is perfect.” Again, let me be clear “No family is perfect.” We love as much as we may potentially hurt/argue with one another. When asked to write about my experiences as a youth delegate, my first reaction was, “Sure. I’ve grown up in the church and this should be an easy report to do.” When in reality I had mixed emotions the entire time I was writing about my experiences at General Conference.

On one hand, I was at a glorious 8-day event filled with worship services and meetings with like-minded people whose primary objective for over a week was to improve the church in any way possible. On the other hand, drama and personal agendas were also on full display. I say this to say that General Conference was quite fulfilling, but eye opening as well. I feel comfortable making these statements because they do not come from a negative place. My experiences at General Conference motivated me to be involved more, not less. General Conference forced me to reexamine the institution of the AME Church in what it looks like and what our basic backbone consists of. Times are changing and to ignore those changing winds would be a grave mistake. I advise all of you to read in full, the words of Bishop DeVeaux’s Episcopal Address as he graciously stepped down from serving the 2nd District. He provides in great detail what must be done to keep the church thriving for the future.

Being a part of the AME family, more is asked of us given the historical lineage and heritage..

General Conference reemphasized talking points that we hear each Sunday from the various pastors and church folk that are among us. “The church is more than going to a service once or twice a week.” “The church is more than being proactive within the confines of the location of your home church.” “The church is also more than the clergy that grace our places we worship.” Too often in a more secularized society, we see those who are disinterested in the faith backgrounds that helped establish the mindsets and beings of the very same people we interact with in our schools, communities, and work environments.

It was quite refreshing to interact with my fellow AME brethren. While all of our personal views may be different, all of us are called to serve We Speak - Page 41

There are two incidents during General Conference that shaped the remarks that I made earlier. The first about the AME church being a family is actually derived from a personal experience that I had during General Conference. My mom and I went to the Richard Allen Memorial at Mother Bethel AME church.

To see this site recognized as a historical landmark in the 1st capital city of the United States is simply remarkable. It not only tells the stories of black ancestry within the history of the American landscape, it also demonstrates the power of God. To let this history go unnoticed or to fall by the wayside in a more secularized society is unacceptable.

I personally refuse to let this happen within my own lifetime. The second experience I had was during the business sessions of the AME Church. Getting through these sessions is a testament of the strength of the Lay and delegations within the AME Church. While our motives might be different than that of the pastors, we are in conjunction with them trying to help the church grow. We are not a perfect family but this imperfect family has made it through 200 years and as was stated several times from the podium, we want the church to live to see another 200 years at the 400th Quadrennial of the AME Church in Philadelphia in July 2316. While unfortunately none of us will be here to experience this, the work that is done now will shape the future. The future of the church lies with the youth. It was very encouraging to see the work of RAYAC and interact with the various youth delegates and alternates from all 20 districts. I am pleased to note the proper funding and support from the General Officers is being thrown into supporting the young adults as we transition from adolescence, and serve as the next set of stewards, trustees, YPD leaders, and General Officers for General Conferences to come.

Finally, I would like to point out the work is not going to be easy. While this is simply understood while one of us is doing God’s work, it is important to also understand the reward is far greater than the frustrations that one might encounter. Being a delegate or alternate at General Conference is no serene feat.

General Conference is grueling, hectic, and sporadic but if I were fortunate enough to serve in either way, I would do it again without hesitation.

We approach this new beginning with a spirit of anticipation and celebration. As Bishop has repeated “I showed up for work, and God blew my mind,” we want to catch hold to this spirit and be empowered for ministry and service.

Bishop Davis’ forty years of pastoral leadership have prepared him for such a time as this. His unique leadership style will be tested as the wheels of National/Government leadership make uncertain turns in the next few months. He may be called upon to offer spiritual guidance to the 150,000 members of the Second District as National voting rights are exercised. The Lay organization has always had a strong emphasis on social action and we look forward to having “God blow our minds” as we follow the inspired leadership of Bishop and Supervisor Davis.

The 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the A.M.E. Church: Baltimore Conference Youth and Young Adults Speak Out Catrina Parham

Usually I serve as the 2nd Episcopal District YPD President, but during the 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference, I had the distinct honor of serving as a Lay Alternate for the Baltimore Conference. I knew the history of the AME Church but to see the AME church work as a complete connection was so powerful. I loved attending the Young Adults Candidates’ Forum because I was able to sit down with the candidates and better understand what they desired to bring to the AME Church, as it relates to young adults. Additionally, I enjoyed the Connectional YPD luncheon, hosted by Connectional YPD President, Bro. Chinelo Tyler and Connectional YPD Director, Sis. Wanda Ringgold.

I was so proud at how quickly the young people, under the leadership of Connectional YPD President, Bro. Chinelo Tyler, were able to plan and implement the “YPD Sandwich Run” to feed some of the homeless in the city of Philadelphia.

I was excited to witness see gospel legends, such as Smokie Norful and Brian Courtney Wilson, minister with songs of praise. It was also refreshing to hear the Democratic Presidential Nominee, Hilary Clinton, address the recent conflicts between law enforcement and the African American community.

Lastly, watching the entire process of the election of the Bishops was phenomenal. I am so thankful to God, that I was given the opportunity to attend this General Conference.

Kirsten Spence General Conference: Youth Delegate perspective As a youth delegate, I’ve witnessed various things throughout the general conference: I’ve witnessed unity, tension and triumphs all wrapped in one. As a youth delegate, I had an opportunity to interact with other youth from various districts (regions) and we all shared our similar passions, thoughts and ideas about God, the conference and the youth’s involvement in the AME church.

One of the major topics we discussed is how some youths may feel unwelcomed or dismayed at times due to the opinions of some, that the youth are either not interested in church or, are too radical and contemporary for church. However, we all agreed that with God’s love and our unity, our purpose for the next generation is not to change the AME church, but to embrace it and remember and continue the tradition and legacy. Being a delegate has opened my eyes to the major parts that youth plays in the church as well as elections.

Being a delegate made me realize how much I and others were becoming a part of AME church history.

This experience was very rewarding throughout all the smiles, tears and signs of tiredness I’ve endured. I will cherish all of the new friends I’ve made, young and old. Having the privilege to serve as a delegate at the General Conference not only provided for me a learning experience about the ways of the church, but it also provided me with appreciation for the ways of the church and how it has been a major lifeline for my entire life.

A Millennial’s Perspective Richard Jackson The 200th session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was simply an amazing experience for me as a young person. I was extremely excited to see how we in the AME Church would celebrate our Bicentennial and was prepared to grasp a better understanding of how our the AME church operates internally. I was elected at the Lay Electoral College to serve in the capacity of Youth/Young Adult delegate to represent the Baltimore Conference; I was further honored to have been appointed by Bishop William P. DeVeaux to be one of the representatives from the Second District on the Episcopal Committee. Because I was really anxious be a member of the Episcopal Committee, I began to read my Discipline to grab a better understanding of what my duties would be as a member of that committee; I began to ask questions about how we would organize but the only answer I always got was “I hope you are ready for that slow walk”. I didn’t understand what they meant by the “slow walk” at first, but I quickly understood once I did my first one at General Conference. I also began to realize that the people I asked my questions of also didn’t know what goes on behind the doors of where the Episcopal Committee meets and I began to get more myths about what to expect. Finally, I came to the conclusion that the Committee had privy to very confidential information and had its own code of honor. I count it a blessing to have been a part of the Bicentennial celebration and to have been a part of the rich history within our Zion. I thank my Baltimore Conference for electing me as one of its representatives to the 50th General Conference and THE BEST IS STILL YET TO COME for our great church!

Some Interesting Facts About the AME 3rd Episcopal District: • The 3rd district is comprised of Ohio, West Virginia and the western half of Pennsylvania • Columbus is home to the headquarters of the AME 3rd Episcopal District and will be the host city for the Biennial.

On August 4th, Mr. Mark Mayo was elected and installed on August 6th as the new president of the 3rd Episcopal District Lay Organization of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mr. Mayo is a member of St. Mark AME Church in Columbus, Ohio and is the owner of a successful business in Franklin County, Ohio. He is married to the lovely Lyndia Mayo. Before being elected, Mark was the first Vice President and Financial Secretary for the district. Mark has also represented me several times at Connectional, District and Conference meetings. He was one of the Living Witness of the 3rd District Lay Organization. Mark is a compassionate leader who will continue to build upon the work of past presidents, Ms. Margaret Ann Fields, Mr. Arthur Brown, and Dr. Willie Glover. Mark is easy to work with and has a clear vision for the future of the Lay Organization.

Conference News Macon South District “Annual Lay Picnic” The Macon South District Lay Organization enjoyed a day of recreational events and other wonderful activities on Saturday August 13, 2016 with its “Annual Lay Picnic and Silent Auction.” The outing was held at the South Peach Park in Fort Valley GA Brother Cedric Nelson, Bethel AME, Powersville is the Macon South District Lay President. Presiding Elder Harvey Williamson, Macon South District, was in attendance. The youth from several of the Macon South District Churches enjoyed several fun activities. The activities planned by the Lay for the outing included competitive free throw basketball, tug of war, balloon toss, & hula hoop competition. The youth were really engaged in each activity. They were rewarded with I st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons for each competition and the church with the most ribbons won a trophy. The age categories included ages 12 & under girls and boys, and 13 & up girls and boys, and a new adult category of 18 & over. While the youth enjoyed games, the Lay were inside the cool facility playing board games and fellowshipping.

After the competitive games ended everyone gathered inside the nice facility where there were plenty of grilled hamburgers, hotdogs and good ole watermelon, as well as other fixings. Afterwards a silent auction was planned for the laity with several great items such as a beautiful portrait of Bob Marley and baskets of nice fresh vegetables homegrown by Sister Barbara Rodgers. There were lots of wonderful items to bid on. Presiding Elder Williamson even outbid some of the Lay on a few of the items. Everyone seemed to enjoy the silent auc­tion. Next was the trophy presentation. For basketball free throw - Girls 12 & under: I st place winner was Kaitlyn Neal - Davis Chapel, Perry, and girls 13 & over -Nausia Woolfolk - St. Peter, Fort Valley. Boys 12 & under: I st place Amari Stalnaker - Bethel, Powersville. Boys 13 & up: I st place Delvin Williams - Gray Chapel, Macon. Men 18 & over category: Willie Daniels - Gray Chapel. For basketball 3 point competition Boys 12& under: I st place - Amauri Stalnaker, Bethel & 13 & over - Delvin Williams Gray Chapel. Saint Peter won the Trophy for the most ribbons col­lected.

(Phil. 3: 14) This past 50th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference held July 6-13, 2016 in Philadelphia, PA was phenomenon and great though Georgia left the session with boundary changes that were so confusing we have yet to comprehend some of them. We assure you we are pressing on and working harder than ever until we know all the changes and their impact on each presiding elder district and conference. Praises be to our God, Bishop Reginald T. Jackson ( our newly assigned bishop) has assured us he will review the new changes and give us directions at our impending midyear meeting as we continue to focus on the “6th District priorities for this quadrennial. Interviewing a Legend (Dr. Anna T Mims)

I met Dr. Anna T. Mims for the first time shortly after I was elected president of the South Carolina Conference Lay Organization. During the first year of my presidency, the South Carolina Conference hosted the Seventh Episcopal District’s Annual Meeting. I wanted to know about the history of the banquet that is held at the seat of this annual meeting each year. I remembered that Dr. Anna Mims’ husband, the late, Dr. J. T. W. Mims was president at one time; therefore, I discussed the banquet with her. This was probably the only time that she and I had ever talked one-on-one, but throughout the years I had grown fond of seeing her at the SED meetings.

Brother Keith, the Northeast Conference President, sent an e-blast that Dr. Mims was recovering at a rehabilitation center in Laurens, SC. I thought this would be a great time to pick up where I had left of so many years ago. President Curry of the Piedmont Conference made arrangements to have a member of her conference meet me at the center, and that was wonderful of her.

I was able to speak with Dr. Mims, and I wanted her to talk about some of the things that her late husband shared with her about forming the Seventh District Lay Organization about 1968, in Columbia, SC. About Dr. Anna T. Mims: Her profession was teaching high school honors English. She is one of four children. She had three brothers, two of whom are still living. She and her husband did not have any biological children. Mrs. Mims is blessed, however, with several “adopted” daughters and an “adopted” son. Kings Chapel AME Church, Pendleton, SC, is her home church and where she spent her formative years learning about the AME church. After moving to Clinton and marrying Dr. J. T. W. Mims, she joined Friendship AME Church. Dr. Mims has served in many capacities in both churches. Her passion, however, has always been the WMS. Sometime between 1972 and 1980 she served as the Episcopal District President of the WMS. Very interestingly, she informed me that the Episcopal President of the WMS is appointed by the Episcopal team e.g., (the Bishop and the Supervisor) serving that Episcopal District.

After her husband had organized the lay organization, she started to work more closely with him.

He was a high school principal in Laurens County District #56 and also served as the President of the National Teacher’s Association. Due to his work in education at the National level, she became interested in Parliamentary procedure. Because she became so adept at parliamentary procedure, she was elected and served many terms in the Piedmont Conference Lay Organization as the parliamentarian on the district and conference levels.

Dr. Mims became her husband’s sounding board or go to person, and she did most of his typing and other clerical work. This gave her the opportunity to observe the reaction of the lay people as the lay organization was being developed and formalized.

She recalled that many lay persons were sometimes intimidated by members of the clergy. It was reported that some of the lay members were told that they could not be a part of the organization and remain an officer in their local churches. I got the impression that organizing the lay people was designed to give them a voice in some of the decisions in the church. During the formative years of the organization the relationship between the lay and clergy was sometimes very challenging.

Sumter District Lay Organization On Saturday, October 24, 2015, The Northeast Conference Lay Organization held their Fall Fellowship Brunch at Union Station AME Church in Sumter, South Carolina. Rev. Harry Wilson was the host Pastor.

Eleventh Campbell Middle School’s Media Center Named in Honor of Former Principal Vickie J. Presley, who retired as Area Superintendent for Volusia County Schools in January, was recognized with the naming of the media center at Campbell Middle School in her honor. At the March 15, 2016 School Board Meeting, the board unanimously approved Campbell Middle’s request to name the media center the “Vickie J. Presley Media Complex”. Vickie, a graduate of an HBCU, Fayetteville State University, began her 36-years career in public education as a teacher at then Campbell Junior High School and later served as administrative assistant, assistant principal and principal of the school. While serving as principal at Campbell, she was named Volusia County’s 2010 Secondary Principal of the Year.

Vickie also served as the principal at other district schools and director of human resources before being appointed as Area Superintendent.

Family, friends, and former colleagues joined her on Monday, May 23, 2016, at Campbell Middle School for the Dedication and Naming of the Media Center. Vickie expressed, “This is, truly, a heartwarming moment, and I accept this recognition with pride but also with a sense of humility. I realize full well the magnitude of such an honor and know that it would not and could not have come to fruition without having been hired and mentored by Mr. Earl C. McCrary, II, former principal of both Campbell Jr High and Campbell Middle School, as well as the support of all of you throughout the years and finally with staff at this school planting the seed for this day.”

Also, Mrs. Presley shared that the recognition meant so much to her because Campbell is where her educational journey with Volusia County Schools began as an eighth grade language arts teacher who endeavored to help students become better readers, writers, and communicators. For 24 years, as a teacher and administrator at Campbell, she was committed to doing whatever it took to promote its success.

During her tenure as principal at Campbell, the media center became the “hub” of the school. She challenged students and staff to read books and to utilize the resources that the media center offered. Students were engaged in reading and discussing the same books school-wide; they gathered in the media center before and after school to read, for tutoring, for homework assistance or to use the computers. Parents often used the resources in the media center, also.

Lastly, Mrs. Presley shared with the audience that she hoped that she had brought honor to teachers, students, and administrators throughout Volusia County in some way. The recognition on that evening epitomized all that she had endeavored to do throughout the years for all human kind. Campbell has a special place in her heart, and she will continue to support it and pray for its success.

Ms. Jaquetta Rogers, West Arkansas YAR Issues Facing the Nation This year, the committee on “Issues facing the Nation” would like to report on the following issues that will be listed in the following “hashtags.” This year has been a rather productive year for Social media.

The Dangers such as threats, cyberbullying, hackers, and other problems may occur with Social media; they exist as banes to many of the pre-high technological generation. However, those who have children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren or yourself are fully aware that the events that have occurred would not have been reverberated throughout our neighborhood and churches without Social media. Due to the limited time we are given, we shall give three of the major hashtags that stood out. # If TheyGunnedMeDown The first hashtag is based on the murder of Michael Brown in August of 2014. This simple hashtag invoked the question,”If they gunned me down, what picture would the media use?” For several years, it has become more obvious that we cannot be identified as victims of unjust crimes without attaching some sort of “skeleton” to our name. It is just as common as us being denied of jobs or expelled from school due to expressing ourselves, our roots, within our appearance (via dreads or afros, non-offensive tattoos), in spite of being well qualified or excelling students. This explains why even the most noble and beneficial of deeds done by one of us, goes unnoticed to mass media. For instance, if it were not for social media, how would we known that Rapper Akon started a project that will provide 600 million Africans electricity.

However, media will not announce that, because news this positive does not allow room for the “skeletons.”

What to do? We, as a church, have an obligation to spread good news and to do good deeds. Our message and ministry must speak louder than our “skeletons,” because in all that we do, the media of this country will find them and broadcast it. #Identity Theft As a race, we have subjected to ridicule, mistreatment, misjudgment, and racism. Appropriation has been the most common form of attack on our culture. Appropriation is performed by those of Non-black origin in different ways. One of the most mocking forms is “blackface.” Blackface, once a “forgotten” form of entertainment done by whites of the early 1900’s, has been used as a way to mock our physical appearance and our “stereotypical” attitude. The most recent case has been performed a woman named Rachel Dolezal. A former NAACP President from Washington, Rachel has recently been “outed” by her adopted family as a Montana-born white female who has been posing as a black female to which Rachel replied We Speak - Page 71

with claims to be “transracial.” Though Rachel claimed to have “good intentions” or have proven herself to be a “black culture aficionado,” her act of portrayal and betrayal did just as much harm than help others appreciate our culture, our life, our struggle, and our appearance.

What to do? We as a race, especially our women, must reclaim our identities. We must educate those who wish to better understand us, teach them how to appreciate NOT APPROPRIATE, be aware of our past and present struggles, stand up for our overdue justice, and become united as one. #BlackLivesMatter This hashtag has been reverberated throughout the world ever since the murder of Trayvon Martin. This hashtag has been our battle cry in this never-ending struggle for protecting our youth, our legacy and OUR LIVES. This battle cry would not have been possible without these brave individuals: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi.

What to do? Remember the young men, women, and children (Freddie Gray, Aiyana Jones, Rekia Boyd, etc.) that have been wrongfully gunned down/abused by a system that does not protect us. Remember those who were rioting in aggressive peace in the streets of Baltimore and lost their lives over standing up for justice. Remember those innocent black youth in the little town of McKinney, TX that were violently handled by officers and treated as “police training.” To bring it closer to home, remember the few innocent victims that were murdered by an unknown white male at the oldest A.M.E. church in the Southern states. The most recent tragedy listed happened yesterday. This is why, to this day, BLACK LIVES MATTER. We, the Laity of the African Methodist Episcopal Church have an obligation to remain “in the world” to minister, serve, and educate others besides ourselves about issues in the nation. Therefore, let us “be not of this world” by giving into the despair that the world has to offer. Let us stand, united. In hope, strength, perseverance, wisdom, justice and love.

“Training for Young Adults, Adult Laity and Clergy” “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great” is what John D. Rockefeller once said. Indeed the 12th Episcopal District 4th Annual Leadership Training Summit that was held at Bethel AME Church was unequivocally the greatest we had to date! Although held in North Little Rock, AR the Enthusiastic, Energetic East Arkansas Conference Lay, President Martha F. Simpson, was the Host Conference. Mr. Carl Latting, the Host Local Lay President and the Rev. Tyrone A. Broomfield, Pastor were very gracious and attentive to all the Lay and Clergy attendees. Workshops were presented by our President, Dr. Dorothy C. Henderson that were informative and fun….as we played the popular “Jeopardy” Know Your Church Game.

KY CONFERENCE LAY PRAYER BREAKFAST On Saturday, February 20th the KY Conference Lay Organization held its annual prayer breakfast. The theme for 2016 was "From Past to Present to the Future - Prayer Changes Things". In conjunction with black history month we choose to reflect on how the power of prayer has delivered our ancestors through many generations.

The breakfast was well attended by both laity and clergy. Music was provided by the Joyful Souls gospel group from Lexington, KY. After dining on a delicious breakfast of bacon , sausage, eggs, apples, grits, biscuits and gravy, juices and coffee we were fed with the powerful preaching of the Rev. LaVeeshia Pryor, pastor, St. Paul AME Church. Richmond, KY. Coming from Luke 9:28-29 and using our theme as her subject, she delivered a very spirit filled message. Three points from the message: 1) prayers must be intentional, 2) prayers must be radical, and 3) prayers must be transformational.

We were entertained with music from the Joyful Souls Gospel group.

This was the first event planned by our new Director of Lay Activities, Mrs. Carol Barbour. She is to be congratulated for a job well done. After remarks from our president, Mrs. Myrna Herron and Presiding Elder, James Smith we adjourned with the Lay Benediction.

WEST TENNESSEE CONFERENCE LAY CHRISTMAS FELLOWSHIP

The West Tennessee Conference Lay Organization under the leadership of Sister Lovie Jacocks, President, and Lay Director, Sister Mae Pegues, held the Annual Christmas Fellowship Service on the second Sunday evening at Bethel AME Church, where Rev. Barbara Green is Pastor.

The Worship Service began with melodious music of the season from the Sons of Allen’s Choir. Our most capable Director, Joseph Martin, doubled as the Music Director for the Sons of Allen Choir and the Producer of the Program.

The Lay Worship Director, Katherine McDaniels, led us in a very spirit-filled devotion.

The Occasion of this year’s Annual Christmas Fellowship Service, in addition to welcoming the most recently transferred pastor to the West Tennessee Conference, was a celebration of the true meaning of Christmas. The Narrator, Sister Gloria Foster, read from the Prophecy of the Book of Isaiah 9:9, which reminded us of the plan for the Coming Messiah and the events surrounding the Birth of Christ. Guest Soloists, Sandra Joy and Stephanie Pegues, rendered beautiful music and the Bethel ‘s Ministry in Motion were the added effects to make the occasion an Evening of Praise and Worship.

Then the Conference welcomed Rev. Kevin D. Robinson back home to Memphis, He is the recently appointed pastor to Noah Chapel AME Church. The Conference presented him with a plaque and a gavel.

A Reception to Welcome Rev. Robinson and spouse followed the Worship Service.

The 13th Episcopal District Lay News The 13th District Lay Organization held The 19th Annual Lay Convention and Business meeting at the Double Tree Hilton, Murfreesboro, TN. The worship service was held at Allen Chapel AME Church.

The Convention theme was “Christian Laity Empowered to Foster Healthy Church Growth through Leadership and Legacies”. The convention was a special time for clergy and laity to learn, motivate and inspire as we worked together. Additionally, this was a historical event when the two merged conferences, West Kentucky and Kentucky met for the last time as single units. This was also the final convention facilitated by our DOLA, Sister Eddie White, before her sudden passing. The Kentucky Conference, under the leadership of Sis. Myrna Herron served as host for the meeting.

The workshop sessions focused on strategies and best practices used in worship services and Church activities.

Participants were challenged to review their Worship Services and intentionally include activities for milleniums.

The OLP Banquet Black Tie Event was filled with much excitement and accolades when The 13th District and Conference past and current presidents, living legends who served the 13th CLO, District, and conference Laity with distinction received Certificates of Appreciation for their Lifelong service. The Annual Business meeting was filled with words and gestures of appreciation to those who were retiring from offices or who were merging into one conference. Several conference presidents were completing their terms of office. We extend a welcome back to the Presiding Prelate, Bishop Jeffrey Nathaniel Leath. Supervisor Dr. Susan Jones Leath.

What do we know about districts 14-20? Where do you find their history. Are we our brother’s keeper? For the upcoming Biennial we will produce an updated lay history of our lay districts. We will feature in our exhibition districts 14-20 and learn of their geographic regions.

A small glimpse of our up coming presentation, features the 16th Episcopal District, now presided over by Bishop E. Ann Henning-Byfield She is the newly elected and 135th consecrated Bishop of the AME Church.

The 16th District is comprised of South America, The Caribbean, Windward Islands, Europe (Cuba)

Prior to the General Conference , during the working conference of the Global Development Council(GDC) we visited Trinidad. The pastors, elders, and laymen work tirelessly and showed great spirit. The organized lay was not actively in place.

Trinidad has 9 Churches in its Trinidad/Grenada District of the Windward Island Conference and we travel to several and saw it churches. I was most impressed with its “vented blocks”, and breads.

LITURGICAL COLORS AND THEIR MEANINGS The Rev. Dr. Calvin H. Sydnor III – Retired General Officer It is by a law in some denominations and I suspect it is by tradition, or the by the decision of assigned pastors in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, that the ministerial vestments and the drapery used in the decoration of the altar should correspond in color that is appropriate for the liturgical season. The colors, if used appropriate to the liturgical cycle, are called the liturgical colors.

White - This is the color of perfection, glory, holiness, and joy. In the African Methodist Episcopal Church and some other denominations, white is used on Communion Sundays. White is also used on the joyous and great festival days of the Godhead such as Christmas Day and during the Easter season (the Sundays after Easter). Many of our churches use white for weddings.

Red - This is the color of blood. It reminds us of the blood of Christ which was shed for the forgiveness of the sins of all of humankind. Red is used during Holy Week from Palm Sunday through Maundy Thursday. Red is also the color of fire and represents fervor, zeal, victory and triumph. Red is used during the Pentecost season to mark the birth of Christ’s church on earth. Some churches use red throughout the Pentecost season, which starts fifty days after Easter and goes to beginning of Advent (Four Sundays before Christmas). Some pastors use red for Pentecost Sunday only and not during the entire Pentecost season.

Green - This is the color of life and signifies growth. Green may be used for the Sundays after the Pentecost (sometimes called the Trinity season).

Purple - This is the color of preparation and of penitence. Purple is used during the seasons of Advent and Lent.

Black - This is the color of deep sorrow and darkness. Black also reminds us of death or the end of life. Black is used only on Good Friday to remind us of Jesus’ death and humiliation on the cross.

Blue - This is simply the color of hope. The hope of the coming and long awaited Messiah. Blue is now being used, in some churches, as the color for the Advent season.

The Liturgical Year 1) Advent. The four Sundays before Christmas Day. Color: Purple (or Blue).

2) The Christmas Season Begins on Christmas Day. There are twelve days of the Christmas Season, which begins on Christmas Eve and goes to Epiphany (January 6). Color: White 3) Epiphany Begins on January 6. The Epiphany of Our Lord (January 6). Color: White. The second through the eighth Sundaysafter the Epiphany (Sundays always referred to as the Sundays AFTER the Epiphany - Color: Green. The last Sunday of the Epiphany (The Transfiguration of Our Lord) Color: White 4) The Lenten Season Begins on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday and the 5 Sundays OF Lent (Referred to as the Sundays OF Lent) - Color:Purple; Palm Sunday (Sunday of the Passion) and all of Holy Week (Monday - Maundy Thursday) - Red. Good Friday - Black (or wear no stole or coverings in the chancel area) 5) The Easter Season Begins on Easter Sunday. Beginning with Easter Eve and all of the Sundays of Easter - White (Gold may be used on Easter Day and Easter evening 6) Pentecost Season Begins Fifty Days after Easter Day. The Day of Pentecost - Color: Red; The Sundays after the Pentecost (excluding the first Sunday AFTER the Pentecost - see # 7 below) Color: Red (or Green). Note: Methodist Churches historically have used red throughout the Pentecost season. Some are now using green throughout the Pentecost Season, which we used to refer to as Whitsuntide.

7) Holy Trinity Sunday is celebrated on the First Sunday After the Pentecost - White.

Bishop McKenzie Delivers Message at 21st World Methodist Council in Houston, TX Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church started the second full day of the WMC with a challenging question: “What does your love look like?”

She gave examples of what love looks like from others including the tragedy in Charleston and the forgiveness given by family and members of the congregation that endured that unimaginable loss. She declared “God’s love will change your mind about people and change your mind about God.” The Scripture for study was Mark 2: 1-11. She reflected on the conflict of those who thought they knew Jesus and who Jesus really was. She brought that idea forward to praise God for people who can see beyond our pain to who God would have us be.

The 4 helpers saw beyond the incapacity of the invalid and stopped at nothing to bring him to Jesus.

They found a way despite the crowds, they were creative, they did something they probably had never done before to get to Jesus. Bishop extolled the audience to do the same, do something new, creative to get to Jesus and to bring others to Him. “We can’t keep doing the same old thing ‘cause it’s not working!”

Bishop praised God for people, like the 4 helpers, who can see beyond our pain and brokenness to who we can be and not desire to control us or be afraid of the best in us.

She reminded us that Jesus not only healed in the story but He forgave the invalid’s sins. And, those who saw the miracle changed their minds about people and changed their minds about God. She urged the audience to use this example to break through the roof, get out of house, to get to where the people are.

She shared: “Praise God for people who understand that love is a verb, an action word.”

“Let us abound in the supernatural love of God. “ “Love is the Bible in a nutshell.”

“Love of God will make you do strange and wonderful things.”

It will make you love regardless of social class, race, gender, education or anything else that could divide you from your brothers and sisters. Love can make you advocate for the poor, stop abuse and violence against women, even make you civil towards those who don’t share your views on many things.

To conclude, Bishop Murphy McKenzie had everyone up, holding hands, dancing and singing “Love Train.”

The Nominating Committee of the Connectional Lay Organization of the African Methodist Church is now accepting applications (Letter of Intent) for positions as Officers in the Connectional Lay Organization for 2017-2021.

Please read and follow the instructions listed below: •

Any person seeking an elected office in the Connectional Lay Organization must be a member in “good and regular standing” in their local Lay, District of the Annual Conference (If applicable), Conference and Episcopal District Lay Organizations, and must possess the qualifications required for the position being sought.

• Any candidate for elected office must have registered and attended Biennials as a delegate, alternate delegate, or observer since (2007) within a (10) year period.

• All persons seeking an elected office must submit to the Chairperson of the Nominating Committee a “Letter of Intent” with qualifications signed by the Episcopal District Lay Organization President.

The “Letter of Intent” is to be mailed to the Chairperson of the Nominating Committee with a post • mark date of no later than January 15, 2017. Letters of Intent received after that date will not be accepted.

• Candidates will be notified by February 1, 2017 if they meet the qualifications for the office they are seeking.

• At a special called Connectional Lay Organization Executive Board Meeting, a slate of eligible candidates will be presented for their approval. After the Executive Board’s decision, eligible candidates can begin campaigning.

• No elected officer may hold more than two positions beyond the local level in the Lay Organization.

•

Any candidate campaigning before notified of his/her eligibility will be disqualified. Campaigning is defined as (a) placing ads in souvenir journals or any AMEC publications, i.e., newsletters, etc., (b) distributing campaign literature/paraphernalia and (c) visiting formal functions of any lay organization or its subordinate bodies with the expressed purpose of campaigning.
