travel guide in cooperation with Cathay Pacific. This guide will initially be available in English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese and will be expanded at a later stage to include Japanese and Korean languages. “The travel guide will enable visitors to stay on track in the city and find out information on their nearby points of interest at their fingertips,” Lau points out. “For example, picture yourself walking along the busy streets of Causeway Bay, all you need to do is turn on the application, and look through your phone’s camera at Sogo. Icons will then pop up to show you what’s inside the building, such as the restaurants, shops and other points of interest.”

Another Good Year

New markets

By Kenny Lau

H

ong Kong’s visitor arrivals in the year 2010 reached a historic high of 36,030,331, an increase of 21.8 percent from 2009, and total tourism expenditure during the same period from inbound tourism amounted to HK$212.6 billion on a provisional basis, or 30.5 percent higher than the 2009 figure. “Continuing the momentum from last year, we expect 2011 will be another good year for us,” Anthony Lau, Executive Director of Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), says in his presentation at the annual Tourism Overview held last month. “Our city will welcome almost 40 million visitors, 10 percent more than last year, with growth coming from various source markets and different consumer segments.” “There is really no place like Hong Kong. It is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. It is vibrant – full of energy, and there are adventures around every corner,” he says. “It is a city of great variety – with stunning attractions to discover and experience. It is a trend-setting city – which features the newest innovation and the latest fashion. It is a city of fusion – where the blend of East and West is one of a kind, anywhere in the world.” “And we are going to use this as our marketing theme to showcase Hong Kong to the world,” he adds. “This theme encompasses all the core values and appeals of Hong Kong, namely world-class shopping, Anthony Lau superb dining, colourful culture and festivals, signature attractions, spectacular events, great nature and outdoor activities, as well as inspiring arts and performances.” This year, Hong Kong will benefit from the launch of several new major attractions such as Aqua City and Rainforest at Ocean Park, the 5th anniversary celebrations and Toy Story Land at Hong Kong Disney

2

land as well as the Sky 100 observation deck at Int’l Commerce Centre, Lau points out. And HKTB will roll out a series of mega events and promotions throughout the year, with 10 major campaigns highlighting Hong Kong’s tourism strengths. “For each campaign, our strategy is to bundle all the key events in the city to ensure visitors can have a full-filled itinerary and comprehensive experience during their stay,” he says. During the Chinese New Year celebrations in February, “our recommended itinerary was a total experience that started from the eve of the New Year,” Lau says, adding the program included sight-seeing unique in Hong Kong like the Flower Market, Night Parade, Well-wishing Festival at Lam Tsuen, fireworks display, horseracing and soccer tournaments. Hong Kong’s Chinese New Year celebrations have recently been ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the world’s top 10 events.

Marketing Market In order to maximize the reach to global consum consumers, HKTB is further investing in digital marketing and strengthening its PR efforts. “For digital marketing, our plan is to develop an integrated social media strategy to engage our visitors: from planning to post-trip sharing,” Lau says. “And we will expand our co-operation with major travel portals, converting consumers’ travel desire into action.” One development in progress is mobile apps on smart phones, for which a number of apps have been developed in the past two years. In 2011, HKTB will make use of the Augmented Reality (AR) technology to develop a number of applications, including a comprehensive

HKTB’s investment in 2011 will span across 20 markets globally, including two new markets, namely Vietnam and the Netherlands, Lau points out. Vietnam, he says, is a nearby country with rapid economic growth and significant increase in disposable income among the middle class. The country also enjoys good connectivity with Hong Kong, with 52 direct flights per week. Arrivals from Vietnam to Hong Kong increased by 33 percent in 2010, reaching 102,000. “As a start, we will build our trade networks in two key cities, namely Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and enhance knowledge of Hong Kong’s tour products among the Vietnamese travel trade,” Lau says. As for the Netherlands, the country’s arrivals exceeded 106,000 last year. On top of 14 weekly flights to Hong Kong, it also has good connectivity with other European gateways, Lau notes. “We will initially focus on Amsterdam, and establish network with the Dutch travel trade through missions and participation in major trade and consumer fairs.” In addition to new markets, HKTB plans to further penetrate into emerging markets that have performed well in the past couple of years, Lau adds. The plan calls for (1) expanding marketing efforts from Mumbai and New Delhi to Bengaluru and Chennai in India; (2) appointing a representative focusing in Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; (3) continuing the focus in Moscow and St Petersburg, Russia; and (4) further partnering with Hainan Province to promote city and beach multi-destination itinerary.

Existing markets For other short-haul markets, Lau expects the growth momentum will also continue in 2011. For Taiwan, the key will be to maintain proven strategy to drive overnight vacation arrivals, he says. “Working with our airline and trade partners, we will develop competitive packages that will make Hong Kong a great weekend getaway destination for the young and family segments, in addition to targeting the secondary cities like Taichung and Kaohsiung.” “Meanwhile, we will continue to capture an even greater share of travelers from South Korea. We expect arrivals from South Korea will surpass the one-million mark this year. “For the long-haul regions, which are our important source of arrivals that is critical to upholding our city’s international appeal, we are determined to continue our investment in these markets.”

Mainland markets HKTB will maintain investment in 42 high-potential cities across Mainland China, according to Lau. And 70 percent of the total Mainland budget will be used in the non-Guangdong regions to further drive arrivals. “Our promotion of the ‘Quality and Honest Hong Kong Tours’ program will be intensified in Central and Northern China,” he says. “It is intended to encourage visitors to select quality tours.” In Southern China, the emphasis will be the latest ‘Individual Visit Scheme,’ which allows non-Guangdong residents currently employed in Shenzhen to make individual visits to Hong Kong. “We will devise a series of promotions to raise awareness of the measures and encourage visits,” Lau says. In the past few years, HKTB has been pursuing partnership with different Mainland cities and provinces to develop multidestination itinerary travel. In the coming year, the focus will be the Pan Pearl River Delta, a region featuring a diverse range of tourism assets such as Diaolou in Kaiping, Danxia Mountain in Shaoguan, resorts in Hainan, and renowned entertainment in Macau. “These greatly complement what we have to offer in Hong Kong,” Lau believes. “Joining hands with the tourism organizations in the region, we will develop new themed itineraries, and market these to consumers overseas, especially those in the long-haul region.”

“We will devise a series of promotions to raise awareness of the measures and encourage visits.”

The Ultimate Destination Hong Kong’s MICE Market Outlook By Kenny Lau

H

Hong Kong continues to enjoy a reputation as a leading destination for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) in Asia. It has been named a top place for business travel and has won numerous awards in a number of polls by MICErelated media, including recent titles of “Favourite City in the World” and “Best Business City in the World.” According to Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), Hong Kong received a total of 1,429,941 overnight MICE arrivals in 2010, an increase of 22.8 percent over 2009. The figure also represents a 22.5 percent-increase when compared to 2008, the time prior to the outbreak of the global financial tsunami. As the global economy improves, HKTB expects the growth momentum will continue this year, with an estimated increase of total MICE arrivals by 12 percent to reach 1.6 million.

Going strong The continued robust economic growth in Asia, especially Mainland China, is set to fuel further development of Hong Kong’s MICE business. In particular, Hong Kong’s strategic location as the gateway to Mainland China and its connectivity remain “key selling points” in the campaign to attract more event organizers to host conventions and exhibitions in Hong Kong. “Our vision is to make Hong Kong the ultimate MICE destination in Asia, and generate greater economic benefits for Hong Kong,” says Anthony Lau, Executive Director of HKTB. “With our strategic location as the hub to travel around Asia,

4

and as the gateway of Mainland China, we can serve as a meeting point for Mainland and international organizations to converge, to network, and to do business.” “We believe Hong Kong enjoys numerous strengths in MICE,” he says. “We enjoy a business-friendly environment, state-of-the-art infrastructure, an efficient transport and communication network, as well as professional expertise. “We also have a liberal visa regime, excellent flight connectivity and English is widely spoken. All these make Hong Kong the ideal place for hosting conventions and exhibitions.” Last April, Hong Kong and Guangdong signed a Framework Agreement, which covers a range of policies and development areas. This agreement, Lau points out, will facilitate the free flow of people, goods, capital and information between the two neighbours. It will help speed up the implementation of crossboundary infrastructure projects, including the Hong KongZhuhai-Macau Bridge and the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail, both of which will give visitors an enlarged network of transport when traveling to the Mainland.

A leisure destination Hong Kong is also a compelling leisure destination in its own right, with diverse tourism appeals, Lau says, noting the city’s renowned reputation as a shopper’s paradise and the culinary capital of Asia. “We have a range of world-class attractions, including famous theme parks, and a year-round calendar of events,” he

points out. “We also have spectacular natural landscapes, including beaches, hiking and mountain trails and islands, which are all easily accessible with our convenient transport network.” “What’s more, our colorful cultural fusion and celebrations offer some of the world’s most unique and fascinating experiences,” he adds. “All these can cater for the needs and interests of different budgets and aspirations.” The Hong Kong government is now investing heavily in tourism infrastructure, including new attractions to the city’s two major theme parks and a new cruise terminal (which will be ready for operation by 2013). These are set to further enhance Hong Kong’s appeal both in the leisure and MICE markets. HKTB is currently undertaking a number of initiatives to enhance the destination appeal and visitors’ experience. This year, 10 promotional campaigns will be rolled out throughout the year, each highlighting different tourism appeals of Hong Kong and featuring a host of activities and events. In addition to expanding and injecting new elements into current mega events, HKTB is set to create new ones such as the Mid-Autumn Lantern Celebrations this September, Lau points out. “These mega events, along with our traditional festivals, as well as the international signature events, will ensure that MICE visitors to Hong Kong can enjoy a year-round cavalcade of fun, color and excitement.”

MEHK To promote further development of Hong Kong’s MICE industry, the Meetings and Exhibitions Hong Kong (MEHK) office at HKTB works closely with various government agencies, including the Economic and Trade Offices, Trade Development Council and Invest Hong Kong, in addition to MICE-related sectors. It is a collaborative effort to attract MICE events and visitors to Hong Kong. Specifically, MEHK is tasked with providing one-stop professional support and customized services for the MICE

5

sector, offering value-added products and services for MICE organisers and participants, Lau points out. And MEHK has appointed marketing representatives in key strategic markets to assist event organizers in putting together proposals or bids to win business. On one-stop professional support, MEHK is to provide advisory services to event organizers on venue search and selection, logistics support and itinerary enrichment. The team can also facilitate site inspections and meetings with various Hong Kong suppliers. For convention, the team stands ready to support the local chapter of international professional associations and assist in the preparation for bidding to host major conferences in Hong Kong. The team can coordinate with relevant government departments in lobbying and promotional effort.

Business Right Here! To attract a higher number of MICE attendees, MEHK is now making additional value-added offers to potential visitors to Hong Kong. In collaboration with the travel trade/industry, particularly those in Hong Kong, MEHK has developed exclusive travel packages and hospitality offers under the ‘Business Right Here!’ campaign. The program, running from March to June, serves to boost the attendance of exhibitions held in Hong Kong and enhance participants’ overall experience. Registered buyers of participating trade exhibitions can enjoy an array of special offers, including discounts on air tickets, hotels and tourist attractions. HKTB also extends customized facilitation services and hospitality arrangements, such as special arrangements of dedicated immigration counters at the airport for participants of mega trade shows and other welcoming receptions. The MEHK office of HKTB first rolled out the ‘Business Right Here!’ campaign in 2009. “The campaign is designed to attract buyers from across the world and Mainland China to participate in exhibitions in Hong Kong through a range of attractive offers,

6

including exclusive airfares and an array of discounts and privileges on business services, dining, shopping, attractions and transportation,” Lau explains. “It also serves to provide an expanded marketing platform for the local travel trade and retail and catering sectors to promote their business to Mainland and overseas markets,” he adds. “The idea behind the campaign is to boost attendance of trade exhibitions held in Hong Kong, thus helping to reinforce Hong Kong’s image as ‘Asia’s Trade Fair Capital.’” Over the past two years, MEHK has continued to enhance the campaign. The office has worked more closely with the travel trade to develop more exclusive travel packages with “shop and dine offers” in Hong Kong, Lau points out. “The current phase of the ‘Business Right Here!’ campaign, which was rolled out in March 2011, features fabulous benefits, such as free WiFi service and Cathay Pacific and Dragonair airfare discounts,” he notes. The campaign is primarily promoted through the marketing platforms of participating exhibitions directly to potential exhibition visitors or buyers. It is also promoted via HKTB/MEHK channels (such as website, e-newsletter), as well as sourcing portals of key markets, particularly Mainland China.
