This is not the spotlight of attention we seek. But nor is it one we should shrink from. AmCham is a business organization centered on shared values. Those values include upholding the rule of law and the open and free society that are among Hong Kong’s biggest competitive advantages as a business and financial hub.
Business and politics make for uncomfortable bedfellows. Which is why AmCham takes a public stance in opposition to government policy with great reluctance and only after much soul searching and discussion. Our opposition to the Hong Kong government’s proposed amendments

These factors all help draw the deep pool of talent upon which the city’s future prosperity will depend. Hong Kong’s attractiveness is also burnished by the fact it stands apart from mainland China, with its independent legal system and robust public institutions. MEMBERSPOTLIGHT Meet Loron Orris Co-Founder of Asia Sports Tech and chair of AmCham’s new Sports Committee
Where is home? Hong Kong has been my home after buying a oneway ticket from Toronto, Canada over 25 years ago. Favorite thing about HK? How can there be only one? There are so many great elements of this vibrant, picturesque city including the interesting people, the non-stop energy and the fast moving business environment. You can always get things done in Hong Kong and it is a great place to explore, plus it’s an amazing regional hub from which to travel throughout Asia. In another life, I would be… A professional athlete such as an ice hockey goalie, rugby or basketball player. Then a coach, and eventually an owner in a pro sports franchise. What do you like to do in your free time? Snowboarding, whenever possible. In Hong Kong I like playing ice hockey, hiking, and who doesn’t love a great day out on a junk trip? Tell us a little about your background in the sports industry. My first two positions were as part of two exciting stadium openings: The SkyDome in Toronto in 1989 and then the Hong Kong Stadium. I was then the first person hired by the NBA in Asia, helping to grow the sport and the NBA brand in the region and eventually becoming the Managing Director of NBA Asia. Since then, I have been involved in the sports business and am currently a co-founder in a sports consulting company, Asia Sports Tech. At AST, we work with federations, leagues, event organizers, sports brands and sports technology companies from North America and Europe who are interested
10
to grow their footprint in Asia with strategy, business development capabilities and fundraising. What’s your vision for AmCham’s new Sports Committee? The new AmCham Sports Committee will explore all elements of the global sports industry with a focus on the exciting new developments in The Greater Bay Area. This will include new leagues and the Kai Tak Stadium, plus the development of sports around the rest of Asia such as the Olympics and several world championships. The committee will connect executives from global and local sports brands, event organizers, sponsors and media platforms with those wishing to learn more about this rapidly growing sector. Committee activities will include panels by leading sports industry leaders and we will attend high profile sports events in The Greater Bay Area. If you love sports this is the committee for you!

'What would you do if you were able to have one of these buildings?' says Khoi Vo, Vice President of Savannah College of Art and Design Hong Kong. In 2008, that was the question companies vying to take over the old North Kowloon Magistracy building in Sham Shui Po had to answer. Shuttered since 2005,1

the property was one of seven in the first batch of the government’s Revitalizing Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme. SCAD proposed converting the site into its first Asia campus, and won the bid the following year. The rest, as they say, is history. In celebration of SCAD HK’s upcoming 10th birthday, we took a trip to the unconventional campus to see how far it has come over the years and to meet Vo, who was appointed VP of SCAD HK in May 2018.
With the support of his leadership team and colleagues in Savannah and Atlanta, Vo is responsible for the school’s entire Asia operation. He oversees the standard of education and teaching methodology, ensuring that resources such as computer labs and digital studios are available for students. He also builds relationships with the local community and industry. Vo tells us how he’s been able to combine his professional training as an architect with a life-long passion for teaching, and how a SCAD education gives students an advantage in the workplace. Journey to SCAD Vo moved with his family from Vietnam to the United States as a child, where he grew up and completed his education. “I grew up in a typical scenario of an Asian family. My father was a physician, my mother studied medicine but went on to become a lawyer, and my older brother became a physician. Naturally, it was my turn to become a doctor or a lawyer or something that would make money,” he says.

The turning point came one summer when Vo stayed with a friend’s brother who was studying architecture. “We spent a lot of time hanging out and talking about architecture. He was very passionate about it which inspired me,” he says. Vo enrolled in an architecture program shortly afterwards and even went on to complete a master’s degree in the same discipline. “Architecture as a discipline strikes a balance between science and art, which turned out to be the combination of education I needed,” he says. After graduation, Vo began practicing in interior design and architecture but stayed involved in academia by

I’ve had some really wonderful teachers and hope to one day influence the next generation of students as my teachers influenced me,” he says. Vo’s transition from practitioner to professor was

One thing he tells students when they first start is: “You are not going to be the one that’s shy sitting at the back of the class and going through class without ever being noticed. That’s just not the way we work in our teaching model. Our teaching model is very engaged – you will have dialogue. It’s not the ‘sage on stage’ approach, where the teacher lectures and you take notes for hours on end and there’s no exchange. Here it is very much the opposite,” he says.

Vo explains SCAD’s three fundamental teaching principles of “lecture, demonstrate, and apply.” The professors lecture, then demonstrate the skills they’ve taught. Then, crucially, get students to apply what they’ve learned.

In addition to a top-notch CV and good design skills, Vo says brands look for people who are also well-rounded, well-traveled and very culturally exposed. “Something that employers always say to me is they want someone who is culturally exposed so that the transition into a global company isn’t so difficult,” he says. SCAD’s Career and Alumni Success department is dedicated to finding students internships, helping with their resumes and interviewing skills – including how to dress for an interview and how to follow up. SCAD surveys all of its students worldwide six months after they graduate. Of those who responded from the Class of 2018, 99 percent said they were employed in their field of study or had gone on to do graduate studies. In Hong Kong, the figure was 100 percent. “That is a big testament to the work SCAD is doing in preparing students for industry and giving them an

advantage when entering the marketplace,” says Vo. Good design changes lives There are three goals that govern what Khoi does everyday. “To continue to expand the SCAD HK community, to raise the level of excellence and academic offerings here, and to continue to be recognized as an art & design university that supports and contributes to the local Hong Kong community,” he says. Will he ever return to being a practitioner? “Oh wow, I ask that everyday! I jokingly call myself a recovering designer,” Vo says, laughing. “I’m interested in problem solving, which for me can take on the form of designing a building or an interior, but also how to achieve those three goals I just mentioned. Academia challenges me in ways that continue to keep me excited and engaged. I am doing design work, but in a different way,” he says. “I mean, I still walk through cities like this,” he says, looking up and around as though checking out the ceiling, “or I’ll be sitting having dinner with my wife and it’s not about the food but ‘Oh, this place has really nice lighting.’ That’s always going to be part of my DNA as a designer but I always find new outlets to practice that,” he says. At SCAD, that involves putting his creative energy into designing a curriculum for the next generation. Vo’s advice for artists, designers and would-be arts 20

As we wrap up the interview, Thompson passes me a signed copy of his book The Story of Crown and offers a piece of parting advice to new entrepreneurs. “A lot of people have their own view of what business should be, and that is noble, but know that it takes perseverance. You need to have this mindset that you will do this for the rest of your life. Don’t give away a lot of equity away too soon, even if it’s tempting. That would be a mistake if you’re putting in all of your effort and money. Sure [staying private] can restrict you, but it liberates you from shareholders, and that’s why we never went public,” he says.

Washington Doorknock 2019 Highlights from AmCham’s annual meet and greet with the administration, Congress and think tank experts in DC A senior delegation from AmCham visited Washington from June 10-12 on its annual Doorknock, at the height of public rallies against the proposed extradition bill. We celebrated AmCham’s 50th anniversary year at the US Chamber with Edward Yau, Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, AmCham company representatives along with friends and guests of the chamber. During two days packed with meetings, delegates discussed Hong Kong’s strengths as an international business hub with Senators Steve Daines and Todd Young and with Congressmen Jim McGovern, Joaquin Castro, Joseph P Kennedy, Ted Yoho, Rick Larsen and Darin LaHood, as well as with senior policy advisers and staff members of lawmakers in

key committees and panels that focus on China and Hong Kong affairs and trade. There were also discussions with senior officials from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, State Department, National Security Council, National Economic Council, and the Office of the US Trade Representative, among others. We also had lunch with leaders from CSIS, Brookings Institution and the Heritage Foundation while maintaining energy levels for a packed agenda during the whistle-stop tour through the halls of power.
