Im Zentrum der Donaumonarchie wird 1867 die k.k. Kunstgewerbeschule, die Vorgängerinstitution der Universität für angewandte Kunst, gegründet. Um 1900, also während OKs Studienzeit, ist die Kunstgewerbeschule mit namhaften Lehrern, u. a. Kolo Moser und Josef Hoffmann, ein internationaler Hot spot der frühen Moderne.
186 7 saw the establishment of the k.k. Kunstgewerbeschule, predecessor institution of the University of Applied Arts, in the capital of the AustroHungarian monarchy. Around 1900, during OK’s years of study, the Kunstgewerbeschule boasted prominent teachers, including Kolo Moser and Josef Hoffmann, and had become an international hotspot of early Modernism.
OK ist schon in jungen Jahren mit dem Kunsthistoriker Karl Maria Swoboda (1889 – 1977) befreundet, aus dessen Besitz das Foto stammt. 1920 entsteht der Lithografie-Zyklus Das Konzert, der Swobodas Frau Camilla beim musikalisch-seelischen Erlebnis eines Hausmusikabends in Wien zeigt. Already as a young man, OK was a friend of the art historian Karl Maria Swoboda (1889 – 1977), who owned this photograph. In 1920, OK made the series of lithographs Das Konzert, which portrays the musical and emotional experience of Swoboda’s wife Camilla during an evening of music-making at home.
The photographic estate of Oskar and Olda Kokoschka comprises approximately 5,000 photographs. It contains portraits by renowned photographers, including Madame d’Ora (Dora Kallmus), Hugo Erfurth, Brassaï, George Platt Lynes, René Burri, Trude Fleischmann or Erich Lessing. In alter studentischer Tradition nimmt man das Studium, konkret das künstlerische Anatomiestudium, humorvoll auf die Schaufel: Studenten dozieren aus Lehrbüchern vor lebenden und (scheinbar) toten (Akt-) Modellen sowie einem Skelett.
Ab ca. 1890 sind leichte Handkameras üblich – die Aufnahme ist vermutlich von einem studentischen Amateurfotografen geknipst.

Published for the first time, this photo shows OK (standing, partly concealed, 3 rd from right) among fellow students from Anton von Kenner’s class (class for teacher candidates for free-hand drawing at secondary schools). In good old student tradition, they made fun of their studies, more precisely of anatomy for artists: the students are reading from textbooks in front of living and (ostensibly) dead (nude)
