Training and development for professionals, parents and carers to enable children and young people with autism to learn, thrive, and achieve

Introduction

Ambitious about Autism is the national charity for children and young people with autism. We provide services, raise awareness and understanding, and campaign for change.

Through TreeHouse School and Ambitious College we offer specialist education and support. We want to share our knowledge and expertise to enable all children and young people with autism to learn, thrive and achieve.

We offer a wide range of training and development opportunities for professionals as well as parents and carers of children and young people with autism. Our training is delivered by outstanding teachers and practitioners who specialise in autism education. It will equip you with knowledge, skills and techniques that can be applied to a variety of settings and which are relevant to young people with a range of needs.

The following Autism Education Trust courses are for those who work in education and other allied professionals who have contact with young people.

With support from the Department for Education, the Autism Education Trust has developed a training programme, competency framework, and a set of national standards to support practitioners in schools and further education to improve autism education practice. We are a designated training hub for London and we provide face-to-face training for general staff and practitioners.

Autism Education Trust Schools training Set dates are held at The Pears National Centre for Autism Education, Woodside Avenue, London.

Courses can also be delivered to your organisation at a date and time that is convenient to you.

Level 1 – An autism awareness session for those who would benefit from understanding autism including lunchtime supervisors, Governors, administration, teaching and support staff as well as other allied professionals who have contact with school age pupils.

Level 2 – For staff who work regularly with pupils with autism to learn more, improve practice or go on to Level 3.

It explores key themes in the training and how this impacts on the individual and the staff themselves.

24 Sept 2014 and 6 Feb 2015 9.30am - 3.30pm £95* Level 3 – For staff who need further knowledge about autism and/or who will train or lead other staff in their setting. It goes further in depth into the psychological theories of autism and evaluation of practice.

Autism Education Trust Post 16 training Set dates are held at venue in Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College, London.

Courses can also be delivered to your organisation at a date and time that is convenient to you.

Tier 1 – An autism awareness training course for everyone involved in a post-16 setting who would benefit from an understanding of autism including teaching, support staff and office staff, caterers, caretakers, transport staff, governors, employers and careers advisers.

Tier 2 – For all staff working directly with young people with autism (including tutors, learning support practitioners, assessors, trainers and job coaches) for practical approaches to developing teaching, learning and support strategies.

Ambitious about Autism The courses below are for parents, carers and education professionals and are run at Ambitious about Autism.

Introduction to autism and Applied Behaviour Analysis

Positive Behaviour Support

This two day course provides a thorough overview of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and its relevance to autism education.

Participants will develop their understanding of how behaviours are learned, explore the implications of this for children and young people with autism and see how ABA works in practice.

An introduction to Positive Behaviour Support: A framework for developing an understanding of behaviour that challenges and using this understanding to develop effective support. Participants will be given an overview of Positive Behaviour Support and have the opportunity to discuss and engage with case studies of individuals that have benefitted from this approach.

Supporting young people with autism to prepare for adulthood Independence, work and leisure skills are vital for young people with autism as they transition to adulthood.

Through theoretical and practical exercises, this one day course will explore evidence-based interventions for teaching these skills.

Teaching social skills to children and young people with autism or Asperger’s This one day course uses practical evidence-based strategies to teach social skills in a school or home setting.

It provides an insight into the barriers and obstacles that may prevent children with autism or Asperger’s from understanding and using social skills.

Family support seminars

We host seminars for parents and carers of children and young adults with autism and other disabilities. The family support seminars will look at how to support your child from getting a statement of special educational needs/Education, health and care plan right through to transition to adulthood and will provide advice on the Children and Families Act 2014. The seminars are presented by recognised experts in the fields of disability law and education.
