We caught up with one of our most recent #lovemyamber winners, Katrina Lowe, who purchased her tiles from our Amber Orange store. She talked us through the transformation of her home and winning bathroom renovation.

1.What sparked your decision to renovate/build, and what were the main elements you set out to achieve?

6.What would you say your 1 rule with transforming a small space would be?

I started to worry that my growing teenagers would start to need more living space. I have always wanted to make sure they felt the home was built for them and they to love it just as much as my partner and I.

Keep it simple. When working with a small space it is best not to overthink it. Keep the designs focused on flow and functionality. If something spectacular and out of the ordinary captures your attention, play with adding bold pieces after the basic elements are achieved.

When planning our renovations we set out to make the bathroom one of the focal elements. It was important to make it more energy efficient, but also we wanted an open floor space so our family can use it to relax and wind down.

7.What was the biggest learning from your reno/build?

It has also improved flow throughout the living area so our family can relax and occupy the house with ease.

Being our own boss in this process and having lack of experience in building we found it hard to properly predict the timeline. From start to finish, it took much longer than we were recommended due to us doing it ourselves.

2.What inspired the design? Did you begin with a vision, or did the design evolve throughout the process?

8.Were there any hacks or tips that you learnt from your small space reno that you would love to share?

Surprisingly, our design evolved throughout the process.

We went into the development motivated by contemporary design. However, after we added striking feature pieces within the bathroom and it has now become more a mashup of contemporary and modern industrial.

We think it is so important to understand the balance between functionality and aesthetics. Having the small space in our bathroom be the major constraint, it was crucial to focus on how we could take full advantage of every corner.

If you want a particular area like the bathroom to have a stylish and functional flow it is vital to keep that in mind.

3.How did lifestyle and family inform the choices you made?

As we are a busy family on the go, the choices we made were massively influenced by my family’s busy lifestyle. We spend a lot of time getting ready for work in the bathroom and getting the kids organised so we wanted to ensure it was practical and easy to maintain in the future.

9.How long did the whole process take from planning to completion?

Well it took us longer than most project time expectations because we did it ourselves on our time off. Overall, it took us around 18 months.

4.With so much choice available for indoor and outdoor tiling, what ultimately lead you to Amber? And can you describe your Amber experience?

As we starting looking into tiling it was important we could find a supplier that was supportive and provided guidance because we were owner builders and did our own tiling.

We loved the extensive range at Amber, the store in Orange has a well set up showroom and extremely helpful staff with a great lot of experience.

At one point in our journey Amber had a particular style of tiles that inspired us to make better choices in our bathroom.

5.What is the best advice you can offer first time renovators?

Our advice would be; make sure you do your market research and ask lots of questions because it is important to evaluate all your options. Don’t settle on liking something at first sight and stop looking around because absolutely loving your choice is crucial on something as big as a renovation.

The world’s leading authority on colour trends, Pantone, has announced their prestigious Colour of the Year for 2019 and it’s a beauty. Living Coral is a pinky, apricot hue inspired by the stunning coral reefs of the sea, symbolising nature, optimism and joy. The Pantone selection process involves a panel of experts combing the world looking for new, emerging colour influences in art, entertainment, fashion, technology and design.

Living Coral If you’re looking for a beautiful accent colour for your home, this year’s Pantone Colour of the Year, Living Coral, ticks a lot of boxes. As an extension of the Millennial Pink craze, this distinctive shade which incorporate hues of pink, peach and apricot is vibrant and playful, yet so cosy and inviting.

I would pair this colour with soft, dusty blue grey for something really pretty, but if you wanted a fresher look, simply pairing it back with a crisp white would work beautifully and really make the colour shine on its own.

As this colour derives from nature, it has a slightly earthy feel so would be most successful when teemed with natural finishes and textures. Pair it with furniture made from timbers where you can see the timber grain and introduce textures wherever you can in the rugs, cushions, wall panelling.

Doing these kinds of things will make the colour vibe in a natural way and avoid any sense of artificialness.

This colour would also pair really well with Amber’s beautiful Carrara Marble mosaic tiles as the soft grey natural stone would be the perfect back drop for this shade. So, in a bathroom you could accessorise with Living Coral towels – a perfect balance of soft yet playful.

Bearing in mind the colour may overpower an area if used in large amounts, I would be inclined to use it sparingly to really make it pop. I would suggest starting with an area featuring a coffee table or a bookshelf and make use of the empty surfaces. We caught up with Ex Block stars Michael and Carlene from Cedar and Suede on their fundamental tips you need to know.

What makes a tile a feature tile?

A tiles feature is a design statement piece that is to act as the hero of the space. It’s generally in contrast to the other materials used.

This might be a patterned floor tile of mosaic splashback, for instance.

How do you work with the rest of the design and dimensions of the living/kitchen area?

We always work up a layout first and then make our hard surface and colour selections, fixtures and fixings. The copper tones pick up those beautiful autumn colours of falling leaves and you can easily define an outdoor space with a sisal rug and outdoor furniture for entertaining. Choose a warm timber frame and soft grey cushions to create a cosy, inviting space.

This tile has the same characteristics as Trust Copper but lends itself to a cooler colour palette for fashionable entertaining outdoors. I would envisage the Trust Silver tiles lining the floor space of a great outdoor entertaining area with a large timber outdoor dining table and chairs with a similar table, surrounded by large greenery.

Hanging plants like Devils Ivy and floor plants such as Monstera look especially striking in this scheme.

Australian Timber – Oak 1200x200, Indoor Areas, Timber Look This tile evokes a lot of warmth in its colour, which is why I have paired it with olive green which has a gold undertone and works well with the timber oak look tile. A speckled woven carpet is also a strong choice as it has threads of orange and brown throughout and therefore really compliments the colouring of the tile. It works perfectly with the current trend towards warmer colour palettes. It’s also a great economical choice as it captures the beauty and aesthetic of natural timber with patterns and grain marks but is more durable and easier to maintain.

Travertine — Ivory 600x600, 300x300 or 300x600, Indoor and Outdoor Areas, Stone Look Travertine is a timeless, classic look that works across a variety of spaces both indoors and outdoors such as a pool area as it’s hardwearing and durable. This tile is perfect paired with warmer tones - in this case soft greys, oranges, tans, and timber.

Travertine on its own makes quite a statement but can also be paired in a bathroom with brushed black or gun mental tapware for contrast. If used in a living space, pair it with a textured wool rug, fabric sofa, and burnt orange and grey cushions to soften the space.

5. Bavaria Stone — Ice 600x600, 300x300 or 300x600, Indoor Areas, Stone Look This tile is perfect for an elegant Hamptons style home. Use this tile floor to ceiling and add a shaker style profile on the doors and drawers. Cabinet knobs and tapware would work best in either chrome or nickel paired with a marble or natural stone benchtop. Remember to keep the styling simple with bright white towels, a decorative blue hand towel, and finish it off with some white florals or greenery.

6. Madera — Beige 1200x230, Indoor and Outdoor Areas, Timber Look The calm neutral of a Madera Beige tile creates a peaceful feel and makes any greenery in the home pop in a nice way. This natural timber-look porcelain tile is really versatile as it can be used all over the home, even in wet areas. It’s also a great alternative to traditional timber floorboards as it won’t degrade or colour fade over time, which also makes it a great option for an outdoor space.

Sense — Odessa 600x600, 300x300 or 300x600, Indoor and Outdoor Areas, Stone Look This tile which features a design inspired by nature’s sandstone formations makes it suitable for many places in the home – especially the bathroom or open plan living/kitchen/dining area. Monochrome bathrooms are always so luxe, and this tile with its super smooth finish is a great option for floor to ceiling tiling. Currently black and matte white tapware is really popular, so I’d consider that along with decorative towels to add something extra to the space. To reduce any starkness, you could also introduce a timber vanity in the bathroom, or timber bench frame in the kitchen.

8. La Roche – Blanc 400x800, Indoor and Outdoor Areas, Stone Look

Whilst there’s been a gradual gravitation in décor towards more peach and purple tones, pinks still have their place. Here I’ve chosen a colour palette of charcoal, dusty/nude pink and a deeper wine colour for a more feminine bathroom scheme as this La Roche tile is just such a beautiful colour and texture for a bathroom. Pair it with a timber or white vanity, and accessorise with timber trays for a touch of warmth to soften the look. Dark towels also provide a dramatic contrast the lightness of the La Roche tiles.

9. R esort – Grey 600x600, 300x300 or 300x600, Indoor and Outdoor Areas, Concrete Look The earthy colour palette of these tiles evokes elements of nature such as tree bark and eucalyptus leaves. If used in large spaces, it can be softened with wool rugs that complement the warmer flecks throughout. I also love the idea of bringing this designer tile into the home to make you feel like you’re in a resort. The speckled tile also lends itself to the trending concrete look and therefore works well in a variety of bathrooms and kitchens. Pair it with a warmer colour palette to pick up those flecks as well as brushed nickel tapware, an oak timber vanity and a stone benchtop.

Phoenix – Greige 600x300 or 600x600, Outdoor Areas, Stone Look The neutral, soft colouring of this tile works really well surrounded by outdoor plants - so if you’re using this on a verandah or balcony, make sure to compliment it with various shades of greenery. In this colour palette there are various earth tones, so would also be great paired with blonds, greens, ash, charcoals, burnt oranges and tan colours.

Travertine on its own makes quite a statement but can also be paired in a bathroom with brushed black or gun mental tapware for contrast. If used in a living space, pair it with a textured wool rug, fabric sofa, and burnt orange and grey cushions to soften the space.

Use this tile floor to ceiling and add a shaker style profile on the doors and drawers. Cabinet knobs and tapware would work best in either chrome or nickel paired with a marble or natural stone benchtop. Remember to keep the styling simple with bright white towels, a decorative blue hand towel, and finish it off with some white florals or greenery.

This natural timber-look porcelain tile is really versatile as it can be used all over the home, even in wet areas. It’s also a great alternative to traditional timber floorboards as it won’t degrade or colour fade over time, which also makes it a great option for an outdoor space.

Monochrome bathrooms are always so luxe, and this tile with its super smooth finish is a great option for floor to ceiling tiling. Currently black and matte white tapware is really popular, so I’d consider that along with decorative towels to add something extra to the space. To reduce any starkness, you could also introduce a timber vanity in the bathroom, or timber bench frame in the kitchen.

Whilst there’s been a gradual gravitation in décor towards more peach and purple tones, pinks still have their place. Here I’ve chosen a colour palette of charcoal, dusty/nude pink and a deeper wine colour for a more feminine bathroom scheme as this La Roche tile is just such a beautiful colour and texture for a bathroom. Pair it with a timber or white vanity, and accessorise with timber trays for a touch of warmth to soften the look. Dark towels also provide a dramatic contrast the lightness of the La Roche tiles.

9. R esort – Grey 600x600, 300x300 or 300x600, Indoor and Outdoor Areas, Concrete Look The earthy colour palette of these tiles evokes elements of nature such as tree bark and eucalyptus leaves. If used in large spaces, it can be softened with wool rugs that complement the warmer flecks throughout. I also love the idea of bringing this designer tile into the home to make you feel like you’re in a resort. The speckled tile also lends itself to the trending concrete look and therefore works well in a variety of bathrooms and kitchens. Pair it with a warmer colour palette to pick up those flecks as well as brushed nickel tapware, an oak timber vanity and a stone benchtop.

Phoenix – Greige 600x300 or 600x600, Outdoor Areas, Stone Look The neutral, soft colouring of this tile works really well surrounded by outdoor plants - so if you’re using this on a verandah or balcony, make sure to compliment it with various shades of greenery. In this colour palette there are various earth tones, so would also be great paired with blonds, greens, ash, charcoals, burnt oranges and tan colours.
