WHO AM I?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR CRITICAL In this century, false information spreads like wildfire on any media platform. Therefore, I use my critical thinking abilities upon judging the presented information thoroughly. I ensure that the information is valid and accurate by checking the credentials of the author and verifying the information on reliable sources or also known as fact-checking.

Furthermore, a practice that I have always observed is to read beyond headlines or entirely understand the whole post, especially when it is a news article to refrain from being misled. Only when I have verified that the information is valid is the time that I can consider sharing it with other media users. As cliché as it may sound, I think before I click.

PRINCIPLED Media is a free platform wherein every one of its users is entitled to their freedom of expression by sharing their opinions on certain matters. Thus, as a media user who holds moral uprightness, I amplify my voice by sharing my take on prevalent topics such as politics, animal welfare, and environmentalism on media. Not only does this exercise my rights, but it also enlightens other media users in advocating for the good. For instance, during the last election campaign, I did my part to encourage the Filipino people to vote for the righteous and deserving of a governmental position by sharing informational posts.

After all, media is a space where I stand my ground and influence the community for the better.

INQUISITIVE Media is a vast space. Therefore, with the diversity that media offers, I naturally become inquisitive on specific topics especially those that are currently on the trending list. For example, the global call to let the earth breathe was rampant advocacy that was led by scientists around the world last April 2022. As this advocacy has commenced all-around media, my mind was immediately filled with questions about the causes and effects of the issue, thus making me dig deeper about it to satisfy my curiosities, and eventually be one with the movement. Being inquisitive in the world of media does not only let me vigilantly gain general knowledge and wisdom, but it also inspires me to help educate others as well.

SUPPORTIVE The world of media is utilized for a variety of purposes. Therefore, as a media user, I am typically someone who does not post that much but supports other users’ media postings by making them feel validated. For instance, whenever acquaintances of mine post graphic advertisements to promote their small business, I support this by sharing it to reach a larger audience. Also, whenever I come across images or videos of my friends, I usually compliment them by commenting positive praises or simply showing appreciation through the react feature to make their day. In the end, this is one way to eliminate all the toxicity that surrounds it, and instead bring optimism that fosters peace and unity.

PRIVATE

Privacy as a fundamental human right extends into the grounds of media. Growing up as an introvert, I never learned to put out myself on the platforms of media for I do not find the necessity to share with others every milestone that has been reached, or aspirations that have failed. At this point, I have already learned to value privacy as a way of guarding my personal information against being used to swindle other media users. I do not share my feelings through a post especially when the topic is not a significant matter. Instead, I express my thoughts in my mind shortly and then scroll past by. After all, this helps lessen negativity in my personal feed, and it helps to maintain a decent reputation.

EDITOR'S NOTE EDITOR'S NOTE EDITOR'S NOTE To Read and To Write: A Glimpse Through Literacy is a compilation of academic outputs, known as the Minor and Major Missions under the course of - Media and Information Literacy. These academics' outputs symbolize the author's dedication to accomplish each task with quality, and it also equates to the author's improvement as she journeys to become a literate consumer in the world of media and information.

More so, the purpose of this magazine compilation is to promote the importance of media and information in the lives of every reader. It highlights the relevance of literacy and exemplifies ways on how to become a responsible consumer of media and information for the betterment of the community. So get reading, and remember to bring everything that is learned here in all walks of life.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE MATTERS Learning text and information media is relevant for it assists in understanding the messages that are being communicated to us - it helps in tracking dependable information and correcting false information (Burnell, n.d.). As a high school student in my chosen track, learning the concept of text and information media will help me recognize the knowledge and wisdom that is being taught to me. Therefore, making me gain a broader understanding of the depths of Accountancy, Business and Management and its related topics.

NATURE OR NURTURE

NATURE WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD HAVE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY IN TEACHING THE YOUTH ABOUT CYBERBULLYING, HARASSMENT, OR ANY OTHER ISSUES IN MIL? IS IT HOME OR SCHOOL

Although the parents at home and the teachers in school both have the obligation of passing on knowledge to the youth to be media and information literate, still education for children begins and must always begin at home. According to LDA America (n.d.), parents who can be considered lifetime mentors are the youth’s primary and most important teachers. Therefore, they bear prime responsibility for teaching them about the harms and threats that revolve around media. Whereas, the school which involves teachers or academic instructors merely nurtures what the parents have taught them through constant dissemination of learnings about the ways of media to promote further understanding suited to their level. More so, as reported by Family Programs (2021), parents are significantly more influential than teachers because they are the child's primary role models. This denotes that whatever behavior and perspective the parents convey to the child, the child will follow without hesitance, compared to teachers whose impact declines year after year as the child is being exposed to a wider variety of teachers. As a result, teaching the what and what-not in the realm of media would be more effective if predominantly handled by the parents through employing real-life practices.

Additionally, conforming with Cotton (n.d.), the deliberate monitoring of a child’s learning progress exhibits the success of a school's teaching system, but given the multitude of students in one school, not every student will be observed up until the most intricate detail. On a worse note, not all children have equal access to education opportunities, some may not even have the chance to attend school. Thus, this forces the sole responsibility on the parents at home who can attentively monitor or assess their child’s media-related activities – as media users, teach them to critically engage with media information and effectively use this obtained information in an ethical way to make a positive difference in the world. In conclusion, the home environment builds the youth’s initial structure, and the school only strengthens this foundation. Therefore, even though both parents and teachers are tasked with teaching the youth about cyberbullying, harassment, or such issues, the parents at home take up a larger role in their child’s journey in learning to be media and information literate because they are their child’s lifelong mentor, persistent role-model and attentive guardian.
