The Greatest Gift For all of the comfort and joy the holiday season brings, there’s equal parts hustle and bustle. Between holiday parties, family obligations, gift shopping, and house decorating – and the playlist making, crafting, and tree topping, there’s a lot to get done once the snow starts to fall. It can be all too easy to skip out on self care, especially in the throes of the season of giving. Maintaining your own healthy routine throughout the winter season is key, especially as days get shorter, cloudier, and much, much chillier. The foods you choose play a massive role in how you feel as you navigate a busy schedule, and choosing high quality, healthy ingredients can get more challenging as markets and farm stands close their doors. With everyone operating on a similar deadline, getting out of the house to shop can feel hectic. Parking spots are limited, lines are long, and patience is thin. Services like truLOCAL make it simple not only to plan your menu by customizing a box full of locally sourced meat and seafood, but also to enjoy the warm, cozy comforts of home. You can choose exactly which cuts you like best and need most – and then just kick back, relax, and wait to load your tasty treats into the freezer. truLOCAL boxes are delivered right to your door – so the only finger you have to lift is to click the “checkout’ button!

Whether you’re stocking up on staples for yourself to get through the busy winter weeks, or selecting crowd-pleasers like roasts and hams, there’s a little something for everyone! Knowing exactly what will be delivered (and when) helps keep meal planning simple and streamlined, so you can focus on the joys of the holiday season (or on finishing up that last-minute gift wrapping)! Once your box has been delivered, it’s as simple as grabbing what you need from the freezer. While your truLOCAL box can help you stay on track with a delicious variety of meats, that’s not all it can do – it’s a great gift idea! You won’t have to worry about re-gifting or finding a parking spot at the mall. Take online shopping to the next level and customise a box of meat – you can even have it delivered directly to your recipient. Whether you’re shopping for that sibling that seems to have it all, or showing appreciation for clients or colleagues, you can give the gift of meat this season! Don’t want to commit to a whole box, or not sure which cuts are their favourites? Snag a gift card instead! You may treating yourself to a convenient, healthy option as you shift your focus to the most wonderful time of the year, or taking a sigh of relief at finding that perfect package for that hard-to-buy-for special someone. No matter the reason, let truLOCAL help you take control of the season, so that you can bask in that comfort and joy.

Established in 2010, Lowen’s Natural Skincare was conceived by a Calgary Pharmacist for his infant daughter (and company namesake). The Lowen’s story began with a single, simple, yet extremely effective diaper balm (AKA Lowen’s Butter Balm) created to treat a painful and persistent rash. Lowen’s mandate is to craft high quality, safe, effective, evidence-based natural skincare products utilizing organic, locally sourced, fair trade, fresh ingredients. This means we formulate our products using evidence-based, peer-reviewed, and personally-tested ingredients to ensure they are safe for you and your family. We ensure that our ingredients are thoroughly evaluated for safety, effectiveness, environmental impact, and animal welfare by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).   Some of the products that we would like to highlight in our gift guide are some of our most steadfast as well as come more recent entries:

Lowen’s Smooth Criminal Shave Balm Lowen’s latest high-performance product offering. Like everything we do, we worked pretty hard to create something unique, effective, affordable, long lasting, safe and suited for all skin types. Made with locally sourced, treatment free and unpasteurized honey, this is a truly unique formula that hydrates and cleans as it glides your razor.

Lowen’s Butter Balm Completely free of petrochemicals, artificial preservatives, colorants or scenting agents. Our Butter Balm is an excellent barrier to irritants as well as being a very effective skin conditioner which means it is great for cuticles, knuckles, heels, tattoos, rashes, chaffing and more! Basically use it on any part of your skin that is dry, cracked, and/or regularly takes a beating – it even works well on your pet’s little paws.

Lowen’s Rub it in Why Don’t Ya Hand and Body Lotion Originally formulated specifically for our daughter, Lowen, back when she was barely walking. It is safe, effective and long lasting and particularly great for those with sensitive skin. Our natural lotion is paraben free, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, contains no added fragrances and we only use minimal preservation. Try it. We’re confident you’ll love it!

Lowen’s Shampoo is Betta! Vegan Hydrating Shampoo Shampoo is Betta! Gentle Vegan Hydrating Shampoo is a natural, vegan sulfate-free coconut based cleanser that is extremely gently yet incredibly effective. It will effectively clean your hair and replenish it with hydrating unrefined, cold pressed locally sourced hemp seed oil. For extra conditioning we’ve added provitamin B5 as well as oat oil, with the latter providing exceptional activity in preventing itchiness and dryness (dandruff).

Conditioner is Betta! Biodegradable Conditioning Rinse Our cruelty free conditioning rinse which, like our Shampoo draws its name from the Billy Maddison movie (more on that later), will kick back at frizz and tangles with the combined action of honey, panthenol, virgin/fair trade cocoa butter and coconut oil while strengthening your lovely locks with power of quinoa protein. For those of you with a little scratchiness, we also include oat kernel oil to calm that beast and, like in Shampoo is Betta!, we added in a little peppermint oil for little tingle effect and really adds the cherry on top of this sunday as it makes Conditioner is Betta!

Top Tips for an Eco-Friendly Holiday Season Nothing compares to the holiday season, right? Twinkling lights, the pleasing smell of a Christmas tree, family and friends getting together, baking holiday cookies, and the joy of giving. Although, this magical time of the year doesn’t just bring about waves of happiness and love, it can also mean lots of unsustainability. But don’t let that bring you down! With the right tips and tricks up your holiday sleeve, you can have a fun and eco-friendly season this year. Here are Hippie Snacks top ways to stay sustainable and merry!

1. Buy a Real Christmas Tree (and compost it afterwards!) Unless you already have a fake Christmas tree (which you would need to use it for at least 10 years to outweigh the environmental benefits of buying a real tree), there are far more positives of sticking with a good old real tree. Not only are real trees a renewable resource, 100% biodegradable, you’re reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in a landfill by not buying a fake tree. Did you know you can compost your holiday tree? Great for putting nutrients back into the earth, Christmas trees can be repurposed into mulch and other materials that benefit the environment.

2. Opt for Sustainable Wrapping Paper Gift giving is an important holiday tradition for many families and it’s wonderful to give to those you love, but let’s be real: it generates a lot of waste! In fact, just in Canada, it’s estimated that 540 000 tons of waste is generated from gift wrap and shopping bags each and every year. By opting for more sustainable gift wrap (and reusable bags!), you can easily have a better, eco-friendly Christmas!

2. Go Planted-Based There’s no question that thousands of animals and animal by-products are consumed around the holiday season… which can severely damage the environment. As one of the leading causes of climate change, reducing or eliminating your intake of animal products this Christmas can make a huge difference in your environmental footprint. Here are a few of our best tips for going plant-based to have a more sustainable holiday season: 1. Bring on the veggies! By simply putting more veggies in a dish, you’re already reducing the amount of animal products that can be put in. Not to mention, it’s much healthier! 2. Serve up Hippie Snacks. When having friends and family over this holiday season, why not bring out some delicious plant-based snacks from an eco-friendly brand (yes, we’re talking about ourselves!)? 3. Bulk it up. Buying grains and nuts -- like almonds, cashews, rice, oats, and beans -- in bulk is an easy way to be more sustainable. Not to mention, making grains the base of your meals adds a healthy, nutritious boost you don’t get from animal products! Check out our parent company, Left Coast Naturals, to discover organic products we carry in bulk.

4. Switch to LED Lights Year after year, LED lights continue to improve, becoming more efficient, durable, and long-lasting, making them the most eco-friendly choice to light your house up with! Here are some LED light facts to help you make the switch: • They use up to 75% less energy than your everyday incandescent bulb (they won’t send your electricity bill sky high). • Last 25X longer (so you don’t have to purchase new ones every other year, effectively reducing your waste!). • LED lights don’t get hot, making them a much safer choice, as they won’t burn your Christmas tree or little hands.

5. Participate in Carbon Offset Programs If you’re flying to a destination this year for the holiday season, consider participating in a carbon offset program to do it a little more sustainably! When you fly, planes release harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The goal of carbon offset programs is to balance out those emissions through projects that help capture or prevent more emissions. So, to have a more eco-friendly holiday season, give some holiday cheer to a carbon offset program of your choice! Or even better, give to one as a gift to someone else who focuses on sustainable living.

Beautiful hair…. Without dangerous ingredients! Prairie Naturals award-winning hair care products are formulated with natural ingredients to give you beautiful, healthy looking hair without the questionable additives. Each Prairie Naturals Hair Care formula is carefully crafted using the rich, nourishing ingredients found in nature…moisturizing Jojoba oil and Shea butter, soothing Aloe Vera and stimulating Tea Tree oil are but a few of the precious ingredients that work to give you healthy, manageable, gorgeous hair. Our premium quality, award-winning shampoos, conditioners and styling aids deliver the results you demand with concentrated nutrients, botanical extracts and pure plant essential oils. Here’s a sample list of some of the health-endangering ingredients that Prairie Naturals never uses in any of our hair care products. You’ll quickly see why. Parabens - most widely used, broad-spectrum preservatives worldwide. Also known as methyl-, propyl, butyl- and ethyl- parabens or under the name Germaben, these toxic substances can be absorbed through the skin, are linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity as well as toxicity in wildlife. They are weakly estrogenic (may cause hormone dependent cancers) and can negatively impact the immune system.

Sulfates - Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and its chemical cousins are standard ingredients in anything that foams. They are among the most irritating ingredients in personal care products causing dandrufflike scalp conditions, skin rashes, eye and lung irritations, and are also toxic to aquatic organisms. It is frequently disguised in seminatural cosmetics with the explanation “comes from coconut. DEA, MEA & TEA - This chemical threesome: DEA (diethanolamine) MEA (monoethanolamine) and TEA(triethanolamine) and related compounds are used as foaming or emulsifying agents and can form cancer-causing compounds called nitrosamines when they come in contact with other nitrogen containing compounds found in cosmetics. Propylene Glycol - Propylene glycol, often used as an emulsifier/moisturizer, is a petrochemical also used in antifreeze and brake fluid. It is an inexpensive, synthetic humectant and emulsifier. Known as a primary irritant to skin, eyes and lungs, it penetrates the skin very quickly and may encourage liver and kidney issues. Petroleum Jelly, Petrolatum, Soft Paraffin, Mineral Oil - A synthetic emollient, it’s the most extensively used ingredient in body care products and the single greatest cause of breakouts in women who use a new product. While covering the skin, it clogs pores and traps toxins and wastes inside the skin layers preventing the skins ability to respire. Phthalates - Phthalates (pronounced tha-lates) are industrial plasticizers known to be one of the foremost dangers found in cosmetics and personal care products. Dozens of studies have shown that phthalates disrupt and inhibit normal hormonal functions, causing infertility and birth defects. Synthetic Colours - The chemical colours used in shampoos and scores of other products are labeled as FD&C or D&C followed by a color and a number. These synthetic colours are made from coal tar and contain heavy metal salts that can deposit toxins onto the skin and cause cancer. Artificial Fragrances - Artificial fragrances can generate a variety of instant adverse reactions including headaches, dizziness, rash, redness, violent coughing and vomiting. These chemical fragrances often contain a toxic cocktail of more than 200 chemicals including endocrine disrupting phthalates. Prairie Naturals HairCare formulas will deliver the cleansing, conditioning and styling your hair needs without the use of harmful chemicals. Prairie Naturals HairCare products create beautiful, healthy hair without dangerous ingredients.

Each year the holiday season creeps up on us and with it comes impending stress. Sometimes just knowing the stress is coming starts to stress us out. So, this year, Rocky Mountain Soap Company has decided to keep it simple and help our customers spark joy in their lives and the lives of those around them. It starts with simple, natural ingredients. At Rocky Mountain Soap we truly believe that simple, fresh, and fewer ingredients are better. Making all of our products in small batches to maintain freshness, keeping our ingredients pronounceable, and working towards 10 ingredients or less helps us stay transparent and intentional about what goes in each product. While other companies’ ingredients list range anywhere from 25 to 45 ingredients per product we subscribe to the philosophy: less is more. Keeping it simple allows us to choose each ingredient deliberately for its quality, safety, and benefits. Using organic whenever possible and working with local farmers, growers and wild foragers across Canada. We’ve made gift giving simple. Our oh-so-popular gift sets are back and are chocked full of wonderful products that will make everyone on your list jump for joy. They come in beautiful, recyclable packaging so you don’t have to wrap a thing, and there are a variety of sizes so you can find the perfect gifts for your budget. From delightful soap sets to Christmas themed duos like Vanilla Candy Cane soap and lotion, we’ve got just what they wished for. And because every product is made from 100% natural ingredients, without fillers or chemicals, you can feel extra-good about giving them.

We’re also helping you de-stress this holiday season. During the holidays we tend to get so wrapped up in others, we forget to take care of ourselves. It’s essential that we find time to decompress and look after our bodies and mind. Start by thinking about what you really need. Perhaps it’s a warm bath with a Lavender & Calendula Bath Bomb, or a walk through nature for some brisk winter air, or curling up with a good book and letting your diffuser fill your space with a relaxing scent like our Serenity Diffuser Oil Blend. Choose the self-care routine that’s right for you at the moment and keep the holiday stress at bay. We invite you to join the Toxin-Free Movement and receive our holiday gift guides, tips for self-care, special offers and much more. We’re here to help you keep this holiday season simple and filled with joy.
