The Animals The monunment of PinkFloyd

Introduction The Animals, is designed to provide an immersive experience of the narrative architecture of the three different animals in the PinkFloyd's album <The Animals> and memorize the band.

Relation Analysis

Site Analysis Pink Floyd, one of the greatest rock bands in the world, was founded in Cambridge in 1965.

They are composed of bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, keyboards player Richard Wright and guitarist David Gilmour. (The former guitarist was Syd Barrett, a leading member of the band, but he was forced to leave the band in 1967 due to drug abused). After the past nearly two decades of glory, Waters was kicked out of the band in 1983 because of long-accumulated conflicts with the other three members. In order to commemorate the establishment of the band, I chose to work my architectural design work in Cambridge.

The Lyrics Analysis

Identity Analysis

<The Animals> shows the change and thoughts of the three different animals.

The dog always live in a life full of pain, fear and loneliness at the same time, it feels selfcondemned because of what it has done. However, the appearance of the dog is always calm, and when it takes orders from the pig, the dog acts decisively without mercy.

To compare with the dog, the characteristics of the pig are unrestrained greed and extremly curel. It will achieve its purpose by fair means or foul. The pig might be a charitable rich, or honest politician on the appearance, but under the skin, it is dirty and cruel.

The sheep symbolizes the normal people, ignoring the truth, or covered by lies. The sheep wants a carefree life and ignores the dangers, so when the dangers come, it is a too-late escape and fight.

Floor one

Dog It symbolize four different stages of the dog. On the first floor, the space is open to show the dog is spied and controlled by the pig. At state two, the dog is spying the sheep to ensure the sheep is stable and won't threaten the pig (ruler). At stage 3, sunlight will only shine through the only window. At this stage, the dog is in its self-doubt state. At the final stage, the dog will try to escape through death. After the visit, visitors can get to the ground by the lift.

Sheep The tunnel, symbolizing a process of transformation. When the visitor stand on the slaughterhouse's conveyor belt road with chains and the height and the width of the tunnel will get smaller, they have to get on their knees before choose which way to go. One is a dark and narrow tunnel, which symbolizes the part of the sheep continuing to live in the same life; the other changes from narrow to wide, and the windows on the top will bring more and more light. This symbolizes the sheep starting to rebel and getting hopeful, and rebellion success in the end.

Pig The building of the pig is made up by three entrances. The first entrance is similar to a big mouth, in front of which is its food (the sheep). It symbolizes the greediness and cruelty of the pig. The second represents the power and the law controlled by the pigs. There are three opened doors resemble the guillotine, and visitors can see an unbalanced libra between the gates. Because the court has the same size of pillars to show justice, inside the second entrance, there are pillars in different size to show injustice, Plates will be between the pillars to block the visitor (hard to get legal help). The third entrance will be several plates full of tiny holes to give the feeling to the visitors of being spied.

The Hopeful Shelter Desert rescue station

Introduction The Shelter is aimed at providing a place for the traveller in the Gobi Desert which can provide the human basic physical needs,medical aid, and satisfy human psychological needs. Also. the shelter is designed to be easy for transportation, batch production, with heat insulation performance to decrease the cost and adapt to the environment in the Gobi Desert or places needed.

Story Board Hundreds of tourists around the world take adventure to the Gobi Desert every year without guide. They might suffer from sandstorm, dehydration or even be attacked by dangerous animals and die from delayed medical treatment and the lack of surviving skills. The shelter is built for providing a tempoary living place with food, water supply and medical aid, in which travelers can rest and call rescue.

Trip To make life more exciting, a young couple named Jim and Pam who have a few wild survival experience decided to take a trip in the Gobi Desert on foot. They brought enough food and water for 4 days, and also brought a detailed map and emergency satellite phone for rescure.

Entrance They entered the building, ools and books are placed on the shelf. 'Feels like we are in our urban apartment!' said Pam. The building is dust-proof and its solar power systetem is recharging. 'It is much cooler inside, and I feel safe.' said Pam.

Lost

Gimme Shelter

Unfortunatly, this couple lost at midday in day 3. Because of the sandstorm, the original road features dissapeared.

Moreover, they have entered a no-signal areaand the fundamental supplyis nearly exhausted, They are in danger.

Day 4, the water is running out, and both of them were exhausted. 'Blink, blink' The couple notice a light signal.

They got closer to the light and found a building there. 'It's a shelter!', said Jim, 'now we are safe!'

Rescure Jim is using the radio to call rescue by reading the guide book, and found 5G Internet there through the computer.

Meanwhile, Pam has found supplies from the cabinet.

Rest The couple will be picked up by the recue team's helicopter the next morning. They take a nice shower in the bathroom using the underground water. With the quilt provided in this building, they will sleep well in the cold night.

Landform of Gobi Desert The Gobi Desert, one of the great deserts and semi-desert regions in the world, stretching across the vast land of Central Asia and across the vast space of Mongolia and China. Unlike other desert environment, it is consist by boulders and exposed bedrock, mainly composed of large sandstone, or covered by rock debris.

When the wind blows, the sand and rocks are blown, but the landscape of the Gobi Desert is fixed and buildings can have stable construction there, however, the building material should be easy to transport, be able to assembled, and durable to adapt to the special environment of the desert. To achieve this purpose, the shelter will be using strong materials for the framework and the shell.

The more to the desert center, the less rainfall there will be. However, the Gobi Desrt has abundant underground water, which can be one of the sustainable resource for satisfying the basic physical needs for lost travelers.

The diurnal range and annual range of temperature and ground temperature are large, with more sunny days and long sunshine duration, and the annual temperature fluctuation range is quite large. To deal with the extreme weather, the building materials such as hot corroded steel and gypsum board are considered.

Working area (First floor)

The effect picture shows the first floor, the working area, which includes a computer for the GPS locating, a radio for calling rescue, and guidebooks (for medical use, diet planning, maps, operation of radio, fictions). Also, a cabinet full of food supply (can and hardtact), bottle water and medical aid will be placed at the corner.

Perspective For easy transportation and lower cost, the shelter will be formed by the inside frame (steel frame work) and plate. To obstrust the heat, heat insulation material such as gypsum board will be used between the plates and the frame. It will be easy to produce in the factory at low price and assemble in the desert. As for its other functions, water can be provided by the underground water, and electricity can be provide by the wind energy or solar power.

Resting area (Second floor)

The effect picture shows the second floor, the resting area. There will be a bathroom, next to which is a box containing items for daily use; flintstone and emergency satellite phone will be placed behind the mirror. The sink and the bathroom will be part of the water treatment system for water recycling.
