ewspapers have traditionally relegated sports news to the back page or last section of the issue. The Ambassador is a little different in that we have rarely spotlighted sports news since we have limited space each month. There is an old saying that “newspapers show mans achievements on the sports page and his failures on the front page”. Although clever and pithy, it is not always accurate. Much of the time when sports shows up on the front page it’s due to some disheartening scandal, from steroid or other drug use, to cheating or other criminal behavior. Our sports “heroes” have all too often turned out to be poor role models in recent decades. Fortunately, there has been a new trend in the sports world that has begun turning heads- Athletes inspiring people for good! Even better, several new sports heroes are coming out strong about their Christian faith. It is sad that the phrase “coming out” has been “hijacked” by the gay population, but
these athletes are coming out for Jesus! In fact, several major sports have seen the rise of “superstar” quality athletes who have done amazing things on the field/ court and developed a huge fan base. Tim Tebow is probably the most well known and polarizing of the bunch with his amazing half-season run with the Denver Bronco’s prior to being traded to the New York Jets. Tebow is VERY vocal about his faith in Christ and has become one of the most talked about people in the nation! In basketball, Jeremy Linn set records and amazed fans to the point of “Linsanity”. Before the embers of Tebowmania were cold, Linsanity took the nation by storm. Although not as visibly outspoken for his faith, Lin is certainly a bold and dedicated witness for those around him while less polarizing than Tebow. Turning to baseball, 2011 Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, freely shares that Jesus is much more important to him than baseball. Golfer Bubba Watson, won the Masters to earn the right to wear the coveted Green Jacket and promptly began his
emotional acceptance speech by thanking his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Boxer Manny Pacquiao speaks boldly for Jesus and shares his dramatic testimony wherever he’s given the opportunity. What a wonderful time to take the national (maybe global) stage and use it bring glory to the one who gave them the talent and skill to reach those marvelous achievements. How much better it is to see athletes work hard, live right, worship God and excel at their calling and then use the opportunity to spread his grace and glory instead of pumping up their own selfrighteousness. Many will doubt and even mock their commitment of faith. In fact, in an outlandish effort to mock and shame Tim Tebow an online “adultery” service ( a dating service for married people!) has recently publically offered $10,000 to any woman who can prove that she had sexual relations with the Christian quarterback. Unbelieving mockery is not out of the norm. What is unusual is the integrity of high profile young athletes. We can all take a lesson from these young men and
