As South Africa’s quintessential travel directory it is our aim to branch out into creative and universal methods of exposure that will provide a larger, more diverse audience while offering the best, most informative resource for any and every traveller. South Africa’s spectacular scenery, engaging people and world-class infrastructure make it one of the most desired destinations in the world. In 2010 the sector was given a massive boost by the successful hosting of the World Cup, when the country received a record-breaking 8.1-million foreign visitors. South African tourism is a modern-day engine of growth and one of the countries largest and most important industries, with tourism providing one in every twelve jobs in South Africa. South Africa’s diverse climates range from tropical in the south-east to desert in the central region. The scenery runs the gamut from spectacular mountain ranges to vast grass plains, from coastline to meandering rivers to desert dunes. The country’s wildlife is far more varied than just the celebrated “Big Five”, and is supported by an extraordinary biological diversity. Three of South Africa’s eight Unesco World Heritage sites are natural sites, while one is a mixed cultural/natural site. South Africa is leading the way in one of the boldest cross-border initiatives currently unfolding in southern Africa, the development of transfrontier parks.

South Africa is home to diverse cultures, ranging from the Zulus who resisted European conquest to the nomadic San of the Karoo desert. Each culture has evolved its own distinctive art forms, music and traditional rituals, while the descendants of colonial settlers have evolved variations of their European roots. South Africa’s history has been one of confrontation, but is now also known as one of reconciliation. World-class sites have been established to commemorate the country’s past and celebrate its new-found unity, while the number and quality of cultural villages, community and township tours has grown dramatically.

Africa is a popular destination for business travellers, who spend on average three times more than their leisure counterparts while crossing over significantly into leisure travel themselves, through tours before or after their business activities and through return trips in subsequent years. South Africa boasts numerous sites of great archaeological significance. Others include the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, host to the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, site of an ancient and sophisticated African kingdom that long predated European colonisation. Conserve Africa’s land, protect its Wildlife BY THANDO MAKILI
I
t is almost impossible to imagine that once upon a time, the Rhino tread heavily against the vast African grasslands and floodplains, oblivious to the threat the humans would pose against him and his priceless horn, the Cross River Gorilla, the largest living primate and the rarest of all great apes, would swing and swirl boldly along the forests of Cameroon and Nigeria. And the majesty that is the African Lion, unapologetic, bold and fierce, roared menacingly under the massive African sun, unaware that one day, humans would come gunning for his Kingdom. The beauty that is Africa is incredible, beautiful but also treacherous. The rain forests are enchanting, open spaces magnificent, floodplains huge, flat and laden with potential. Africa, home to the Sahara, largest desert in the world, boasts the most amazing wilderness and its rich geological history dates back millions of years. Now fast forward to 2016 and you are met with a mammoth decline in the world’s wildest species. To date, an inconceivable number of wild animals are declared either endangered or vulnerable. Lands have become desolate, forests sliced down and plains turned into agricultural or commercial spaces. The African wild dog once strayed the sub-saharan regions, but today, reports indicate that there are between 3000 – 5000 wild dogs remaining. Farmers and natives are said to kill wild dogs due a perceived threat to their livestock. Sadly, this now endangered species is also left squandering for a home as a massive area of its natural habitat is used for human occupation. Scientists, conservationists and organizations alike have agonized over the threat
to the Rhino for centuries. Poachers come from far and wide for the Rhino horn and their treacherous labors have driven this non-violent African beast to near-extinction. There are 29 000 Rhinos living in the wild today, an unbelievable drop compared to the 500 000 estimate at the beginning of the 20th century. Although gradual wild life conservation efforts are far from futile. In Kenya, baby elephants orphaned due to Ivory trade are saved from the brink of death by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and bottle fed until the mature age of two years. A total of 239 tigers were identified using camera traps in an area between India and Nepal. In 2011, Nepal celebrated a year of zero poaching. More than 40% of Namibia is under conservation management and today, the country is home to the world’s largest cheetah population as well as flourishing populations of lion, zebra, black rhinos and other native wildlife. In many African countries, various organizations have successfully linked the livelihoods of the local people with the benefits of preserving their natural heritage, a strategy that has proved to be effective in rhino horn and elephant tusk poaching, as indicated by Charlie Mayhew MBE of TUSK. If we continue with these and other wildlife conserving initiatives, we will be able to provide a safe environment for wild animals, preserve the African wildlife landscape, put measures in place to protect animals from poachers and hunters and foster techniques for man and beast to coexist. Ultimately, if we are to protect Africa’s wildlife, we must conserve its land. Not only for us, but for future generations of the animal Kingdom. AMAZWE | Your Quintessential Travel Directory

Celebrates International Cheetah Day

ango Wildlife Ranch invites wildlife lovers from all over the globe to celebrate the world’s fastest feline on 4 December, International Cheetah Day. This year marks the sixth anniversary of this special occasion designed to generate awareness for the cheetah, which, with fewer than 10,000 remaining in the wild, is sadly Africa’s most endangered big cat. The Ranch will be extending this celebration spanning it across two weeks. The cheetah is not only the fastest, but it is also the oldest and sadly, Africa’s most endangered big cat. It has survived more than three million years through the Ice Age and a genetic bottleneck, only to have its numbers decimated by almost 90 percent in the last 100 years. International Cheetah Day serves to remind us that the cheetah, like all wildlife, is a treasure of our planet and its survival depends on human conservation action and celebrating this day is a way to remind ourselves of this duty. The role of accredited zoos has never been more important. With the world losing countless species each year. Being a leader in conservation and education, Cango Wildlife Ranch (CWR) will be celebrating 30 years of existence in Feb 2017. This longstanding facility boast one of the oldest and largest cheetah breeding centres in the world and has the highest survival rate of any cheetah institution registered on the International Studbook. The Ranch takes enormous pride in the practices they have in
place to ensure high survival rates with the primary focus of raising strong and healthy genetically diverse ambassador cheetah. The Ranch is one of the most forward thinking and innovative zoological facilities in Africa. They are one of only a few facilities in South Africa to be accredited through PAAZA (The Pan-African Association of Zoos and Aquaria) and proudly hold a membership with WAZA (The World Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums) which is by invitation only to the best facilities around the globe. In October the Ranch was named a ‘provincial Visitor Experience: Wildlife Encounters Award winner’ in the Western Cape at the Lilizela Tourism Awards 2016, honouring best-inindustry Wildlife Encounters within the Western Cape. All the way from Belgium, JF is a returning Wild Animal Volunteer (http://www.wildanimalvolunteers.com/) who never leaves the Ranch without leaving a massive impression. His inventive and amazing Cheetah Mascot suits always bring TONS of laughs to not only staff and public at the Ranch, but also when visiting local pre-primary schools together with other staff and volunteers in order to educate and entertain them on some cheetah facts. This year the entire WAV department put shoulder to the wheel to make this celebration week memorable and fun to create awareness around International Cheetah Day (week). Kids and adults alike got their faces painted cheetah style and staff sported crafty cheetah ears.

Khwai Tented Camp located on a beautiful site within this community-run concession on the eastern border of the Moremi Game reserve, on the banks of a lagoon flowing into the Khwai river, acts as a boundary between the reserve and the community area, offering visitors staying here several unique ways to experience Africa. Besides the day-time drives which can feature Africa’s big attractions – lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe – guests at Khwai Tented Camp are able to explore nature after sunset with a night drive. This activity, along with the guided walking safaris, is not usually permitted in the National Parks or Game Reserves, and allows guests to get an up close and personal experience with some of Africa’s nocturnal and / or more elusive animals. Whale watching - September to November The whales may be seen immediately in front of the apartment’s garden lying in the relative shallows some 10 metres off the rocks! Deep sea fishing, kayaking, boating and rock fishing is available. Shark cage diving and shark breeching trips are offered out of Simonstown (seasonal), Walking, mountain hiking, cycling all around the local area as well as throughout the Cape Peninsula.
Sightseeing
At Seaforth, some 10 kms from the apartment, is the world famous penguin colony and a wonderful beach. Historic Simonstown, a naval base since the 17th century is some 7 kms on the way to Seaforth. Cape Point Nature Reserve is the southern most tip of the Peninsula and baboons, buck and other wild life may be observed. The drive is absolutely breathtaking as is the drive over Chapmans Peak to Hout Bay. Helicopter flights may be taken daily from the Waterfront in Cape Town. The last Lightning jet aircraft licensed to fly may be flown in at “Thunder City” at Cape Town International Airport with other Air force jets eg The Buccaneer. The Lightning is still today the 2nd fastest jet from take off to 20,000 feet, only superseded by the F-18.

The sunsets here are amazing in the Drakensberg, with game wandering around your deck from early morning to late at night and the sounds of frogs in chorus singing out from the lake at night, accompanied by crickets and owl on occasion.

Lakeside Lodges at Sani Valley offer exquisitely decorated, double story stand-alone accommodation units. Besides our accommodation we also offer a host of activities including game drives, horse riding, guided or self guided walks and mountain biking. We have a selection of function venues and would love to host your 60th birthday bash, your 25th wedding anniversary or any other occasion you can think of. The game drives morning and afternoon are engaging... the views are superb, the flora varied and the game abundant. Nineteen different species roam the reserve, including roan, sable, giraffe and wildebeest... leopard and cheetah are also seen from time to time. The reserve can also be explored on foot... in the company of one of our guides or on your own. Footpaths will be laid out soon, but roads and game tracks make the going good. The reserve is very hilly, so a basic level of fitness is required. Mountain bikes will be introduced at a future date (the hills have been mentioned!) – many mountain bikers from Windhoek know the property well and have ridden here in the past. Horses are also a very eco friendly way of exploring the lie of the land... quiet and un-invasive, the horses allow guests to get a lot closer to the game than in a vehicle. Gorilla tracking can be done the whole year through and is evenly as good. There is no higher or lower success rate in the different seasons (95% guaranteed to see them). In rainy season the tracks in the rain forest might be a bit muddier and your tracking might be a bit longer/ tougher because of that. However; it’s a RAIN forest, so difference is not all that big compared to dry season. In rainy season you are more likely to track in smaller groups. When you are flexible we advise you to book your tracking in November. One big reason is the discount of $250 us dollar per gorilla permit, but there are more reasons: November should be the short rainy season, but it has not been like this in the last 5 years. The last years it has been among the most beautiful months to travel in (after rain season and very green). It’s hard to predict nowadays when the rainy season will be. Climate changes are making it hard to plan. Normally the long rainy season should be in March, April and beginning of May and short rainy season in November. However, the last 5 years the short rainy season has been in early December.
