T

he Lion Park, an established tourist destination, well loved by locals and foreigners alike, became a popular experience for all over the last 50 years. Having moved to the Cradle of Humankind in July 2016, this new must-see world class facility, called Lion and Safari Park, offers guests a memorable experience. The new park offers a wealth of exciting activities such as animal interactions, guided game drives and self-drives. You are guaranteed to get super-close to some of Africa’s favourite animals whether you go on an informative guided tour or self-drive. Guests also have the opportunity to engage in the experience of hand feeding a selection of animals including giraffes, ostriches and various other antelope species that roam freely on the 600-hectare property and frequently visit the wetlands in front of ‘the Wetlands’ Bar and Restaurant. The Lion & Safari Park is home to a vast selection of indigenous species such as Lion (Brown and White), Cheetah, Hyena (Brown, Spotted and Striped), Leopard (including black leopard), Wild Dogs, Sable antelope, Kudu, Nyala to mention only a few. Guests can enjoy a variety of different guided tours. The trained guides turn every tour into an informative and educational trip as they share interesting facts. Tour options include; Lion & Wild Dog Tour, Mini Safari, Night tours (with predator feeding), Private Exclusive tours, Alex Tour, Cheetah and Lion Walks. The 3-hour Safari is the flagship tour which includes snacks and drinks on the bank of the Crocodile river. The famous animal trainer Alex Larenty promises to provide a fun-filled experience as he interacts with fully grown lions on the ‘Alex tour’.

The park is a paradise for children. The beautifully designed playground next to the restaurants will keep the young ones entertained and guided game drives and self-drives are free to all children under the age of 12 from 1 December 2017. This makes the perfect venue for kiddies birthday parties. A day visit to the park also provides the perfect opportunity for schoolchildren to learn about the animals and various research programmes that the Lion and Safari Park is involved in. The Bull ‘n Buck grill provides a premier dining experience with a top wine list and a delicious menu, venison of course being the Grill’s speciality dish complimenting that true African sensation. Alternatively, the Wetlands Restaurant is a great family choice to enjoy a quick meal whilst enjoying the view of antelope grazing meters away. Take a short walk from the restaurants to visit the meerkat, porcupine and mongoose enclosures. Apart from being a world class tourist destination, the Lion and Safari Park turns any conference, function or event into something unique. The park’s photographic centre will capture your memories with a great range of printing options such as photobooks, mugs, keyrings, puzzles and more. The ‘5 dome shopping experience’ offers a vast selection of unique hand-crafted curios, jewellery and clothing, which make great gifts for those back home. Entrance to the restaurants, curio shops and kiddie’s playground is free, and guests only pay for activities. The cost of a visit to the Lion and Safari Park is well priced for both local and international guests. The park is open 365 days a year, and is certainly an experience not to be missed.

FEDHASA THE VOICE AND LOBBYING BODY OF THE SA HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

As one of the oldest industry associations around, FEDHASA was formed in 1949 by industry representatives who had similar interests and needed to ensure that the private sector was able to build and control their own destiny. It was therefore agreed that, through an industry association, all are invited to participate meaningfully towards a common goal.

Recognised by government and industry role-players, FEDHASA’s core mandate is that of industry watchdog and lobbying body for the SA hospitality industry. As the VOICE of the industry, FEDHASA acts as the industry’s: • VOICE of advocacy • VOICE of knowledge • VOICE that informs policy • VOICE that promotes quality and service excellence

FEDHASA has been actively involved in the lobbying of the following important pieces of industry legislation and matters affecting our industry over the past year: • Visa/immigration issues • Tourism BEE codes • National liquor policy • Recent changes to the hospitality minimum wages and conditions of employment • Statutory Council for the Restaurant and Catering trade • Seasonality

Some past wins as the VOICE of the industry include: • • • •

Sunday double-pay – now only 1½ Minimum wage negotiations three years ago – only CPI + 1.5% instead of CPI + 4% The City of Cape Town Liquor By-law (2012) – application for extended trading hours, champagne breakfasts are back, etc. CATHSSETA levies only 1% of your payroll instead of 2%

Through collaborations with government and industry partners, FEDHASA believes that we could ensure a better and more sustainable trading environment for our members and the industry at large.

he annual Sanlam Top Destination Awards, in its third year running, plans to expand this year with additional entries, more guests at the awards ceremony, extravagant décor and further prolific sponsorship opportunities with the theme of Authentically African #MyHeartBeatsAfrica. The awards have been designed by Discount Traveler for one purpose and that’s to uplift the hospitality industry in South Africa by acknowledging top accommodation establishments as key industry players. Managing Director of Discount Traveler, Jonathan Pepler states that the Sanlam Top Destination Awards far exceeds our expectations, especially due to the great response we’ve received each year. “We are building a brand that will continue to show recognition to one of our country’s most influential industries and one that has a positive impact. The hospitality and tourism industry in its entirety is a driving force in our economy and to simply play a small role in this, is significant to the bigger picture.” Pepler continues, “We strive to uplift that local family business that has put blood, sweat and

tears into their establishment, to show people the utmost dedication that goes into running a guest house or B&B and then on the other hand we want to show recognition to the four and five-star hotels that are doing everything right in terms of service offering and deserve an applause.” Entries are open to all accommodation establishments in South Africa and there are nine categories available to enter. Entries have been open from the 1st of February 2017 but voting will commence from the 1st of March 2017. Voting is open to the public and establishments are encouraged to get their guests to vote for them. Votes are tallied and the top establishments are then judged according to an internal set of criteria. Nominees are named and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday, 14 September 2017 which will be held at the Cape Town City Hall. Title sponsor of the awards remains financial giant Sanlam, while Rialheim ceramics plans to create unique centre pieces for each table at the ceremony, with various other large brands joining as well.

About Us

elcome to the fifth edition of the Amazwe Tourism Directory magazine, a vibrant new development aiming to inject the local tourism industry with a fresh, clean cut and unique perspective. As South Africa’s quintessential travel directory it is our aim to branch out into creative and universal methods of exposure that will provide a larger, more diverse audience while offering the best, most informative resource for any and every traveller. South Africa’s spectacular scenery, engaging people and world-class infrastructure make it one of the most desired destinations in the world. In 2010 the sector was given a massive boost by the successful hosting of the World Cup, when the country received a record-breaking 8.1-million foreign visitors. South African tourism is a modern-day engine of growth and one of the countries largest and most important industries, with tourism providing one in every twelve jobs in South Africa. The South African tourism landscape is varied and….., with something to offer every traveller.

ECO-TOURISM

South Africa’s diverse climates range from tropical in the south-east to desert in the central region. The scenery runs the gamut from spectacular mountain ranges to vast grass plains, from coastline to meandering rivers to desert dunes. The country’s wildlife is far more varied than just the celebrated “Big Five”, and is supported by an extraordinary biological diversity. Three of South Africa’s eight Unesco World Heritage sites are natural sites, while one is a mixed cultural/natural site. South Africa is leading the way in one of the boldest cross-border initiatives currently unfolding in southern Africa, the development of transfrontier parks.

SOUTH CULTURAL TOURISM

South Africa is home to diverse cultures, ranging from the Zulus who resisted European conquest to the nomadic San of the Karoo desert. Each culture has evolved its own distinctive art forms, music and traditional rituals, while the descendants of colonial settlers have evolved variations of their European roots. South Africa’s history has been one of confrontation, but is now also known as one of reconciliation. World-class sites have been established to commemorate the country’s past and celebrate its new-found unity, while the number and quality of cultural villages, community and township tours has grown dramatically.

BUSINESS TOURISM

Africa is a popular destination for business travellers, who spend on average three times more than their leisure counterparts while crossing over significantly into leisure travel themselves, through tours before or after their business activities and through return trips in subsequent years. With its first-world infrastructure, balmy climate and breathtaking scenery – not to mention acres of golf courses – South Africa is an ideal location for international congresses and conventions.

PALEO-TOURISM

South Africa boasts numerous sites of great archaeological significance. The best known of these are the Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai sites that make up the Cradle of Humankind, one of the world’s richest concentrations of hominid fossils. Others include the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, host to the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, site of an ancient and sophisticated African kingdom that long predated European colonisation. These are all Unesco World Heritage sites.

ADVENTURE TOURISM

Being at the southern tip of a large continent, South Africa offers 3 000 kilometres of coastline along with breathtaking mountains – often side by side. The country’s diverse terrain, together with a climate suited to outdoor activities, make it an ideal hunting ground for adrenaline seekers. South Africa offers world-class climbing, surfing, diving, hiking, horseback safaris, mountain biking, river rafting – and just about any other extreme activity you can name, all supported by dedicated operators.

SPORTS TOURISM

World-class venues and supporting infrastructure, top international events, and South Africans’ passion for sport combine to make the country a huge drawcard for sports fans. More than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sport events, with spectators accounting for 60% to 80% of these arrivals. Amazwe is the result of dedication and hard work from all involved. The Amazwe team is made up of highly skilled, passionate and driven individuals who value quality, efficiency and service delivery while providing outstanding results. We are exceptionally excited to share our debut issue with you and look forward to building a long and lasting relationship with our readers

et back from the beach merely a short walk to the famous Surfers Corner. You’ll find comfort in the most welcoming setting at The Muize Bed and Breakfast. Daniel Blaauw built his career overseas but staying away from one of the most welcoming and beautiful cities was clearly never going to last. A return home turned out to be an exciting new adventure and just the beginning of a new chapter. His parents had already started a BnB tucked away in Marine estate but together they saw an opportunity of an upgrade and bought a rundown old house in Axminster Road just across from the beach. Together they lovingly restored and renovated this 60 year old gem bringing together their various skills in engineering and the arts. Just a short time spent reading their online reviews and you know they take great care to welcome and take care of every visitor. They have managed to create an eco-centric guesthouse with a home away from home warmth. “Surfing, exploring, entertaining or simply sharing a few anecdotes over an African braai, this entrepreneurial surfer has created an environment worth witnessing first hand, Thank you ‘The Muize’, I had a whale of a time.“ www.themuize.com +27 (0) 21 788 1950 | info@themuize.co.za

Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR)

Getting a feel of your hotel room before you even get there, or your airline’s premium economy flight has never been so tangible. Virtual travel is expected to further evolve this year, as service providers haste to offer easy and reliable travel planning and experience. Did I mention the Giroptic iO | HD 360° camera for your smartphones/tablets? This represents the perfect way to capture and display your perfect travel memories. It is also an essential marketing tool for destination promoters, as they sell the best 360° views of the various tourism destinations this year.

Personal Fulfilment

Travel consumer demands will not stop at accommodation, good food, a comfortable ride or flight. Whether for leisure or business, at a 5* hotel or at a backpacker’s hostel; 2018 travelers will be more concerned about their experiential immersion and fulfilment. It will be about clearing the bucket list with new encounters, which comes with a clarion call to hoteliers among other service providers to focus more on personalization. Client specifications must be adhered to, and swift adoption of emerging technologies necessary, if this trend is to be fully monetized. Understanding the customer to fit your marketing strategy is also key in offering personalized services and achieving maximum revenue growth.

Hotels vs Home Sharing

The growth of homeshares in 2017 created an intense competition in the accommodation sector, largely due to the high demand for diversification of products in the travel and hospitality market. Yet, in its 2018 Future of Millennial Travel Report, Resonance Consultancy indicates that only about 23% of the U.S respondent millennials prefer to book their accommodation and travel via home sharing sites. This, perhaps a big relief for hotels, with 64% preferring to book on travel websites while 47% through specific hotel, resort, and airline websites. Travel agents, still come a little ahead of home sharing sites at 24%.

Increased Sustainable Travel

As the UNWTO International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, 2017 saw massive campaigns aimed at promoting responsible travel both by the World Tourism Organization as well as by other concerned stakeholders. It is therefore expected that this year will see the implementation of the policies put in place towards sustainability. Additionally, the millions of travelers worldwide who were reached and impacted by the Travel.Enjoy.Respect Campaign by the UN body will increasingly practice caution in their travel behaviors, in a bid to leave only positive impacts in the destinations they travel to. I conclude by echoing Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s words, “Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all. It offers a framework to generate economic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship, and strengthen governance”. www.amazwe.com

d s n e T r

T

he Kenyan domestic travel market is incessantly making a visible mark, contributing 59% of domestic spending according to Jumia Travel Kenya Hospitality Report 2017. A big percentage constituting the domestic travelers are the millennials. In its report “How Kenyan Millennials Travel”, Saffir – a travel destination marketing company – refers to this group as netizens who are less conservative, well educated, tech savvy and highly reliant on the mobile phone. The millennials’ need for experiential travel goes beyond that of their Gen X counterparts, who are often inclined to more relaxed and conventional travel trends. Thus, the millennials are largely influencing the travel market, since travelling is not a luxury but a necessity to them. By 2025, Saffir estimates that the millennials will make up about 60% of the global workforce, consequently, becoming the next big drivers of the travel industry. Most Kenyan Millennials are spontaneous travelers, represented by 29.6% of the report’s respondents; followed by 24.7% who seek adventures. Both factors are key influencers to related service providers’ marketing and advertising strategies, in a bid to lure as many of the youthful travelers as possible. For instance, given their spontaneous nature, the millennials tend to travel often but spend less on budget. To meet them at their very point of need, we see an increase in promotional offers from travel agents, airlines, and hotels such as the ongoing Easter Competition by PrideInn Hotels, following the recognition of PrideInn Paradise Beach Hotel as the Best in Kenya 2017; at the Kenya Travel Awards held earlier this month. Creating such online competitions not only entices the millennials who are mostly on social sites, but also acts as a publicizing tactic by creating online buzz and guaranteeing increased positive reviews as well as future referrals. As one would expect, the Saffir report also notes that 51.6% of millennials travel in groups, of which majority (66.7%) prefer a group of 4-10 people. This trend is rooted on the social nature of the millennials who enjoy group adventurous activities as compared to relaxed hotel stays. The Kenyan traveler’s behavior is changing, and the millennials especially, have unique triggers that cause them to travel. Websites and social media searches, as well as online reviews are heavy influencers that cannot be underplayed. A third of Kenyan millennials book their travel online meaning a majority are still offline. It is for this reason that Cyrus Onyiego, the country manager of Jumia Travel Kenya noted the online travel agency aims at rolling out more offline agencies this year, to reach and “convert more travelers still wary or not conversant with the internet of things”. These are among other trends like the preferred payment methods (48.8% – mobile), length of stay (75.2% – 1 to 3 nights), spending analysis (35.4% – accommodation), and preferred accommodation (26.4% – Bed and Breakfast). Of importance to note is that the Kenyan Millennials are mostly keen on the value of good service provided (67.1%), followed by favorable price at a distance second with 23.7%, according to the report by Saffir. www.amazwe.com
