Creating a Culture of Care Dear Friends of The Children’s Institute, Everyone who has a connection to The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh is a member of our family – including you.

An essential strength of our organization is the investment we make in relationships with those we serve, those we work alongside, those we partner with, and those who support our vision. We are deliberate about creating a culture of care where everyone feels valued and that they belong.

For 120 years, caring for kids and families with unique abilities has been at the heart of our mission. It is central to our Vision 2023 strategic plan and how we meet the community’s needs by cultivating partnerships and delivering impactful services. We know that the best care comes from the best people, so we care for our team members in ways that attract talented people with compassion and expertise to our organization.

The evolution of The Children’s Institute over these past few years has brought our organizational values and mission to life in exciting new ways. Our Culture Initiative, launched in 2020, utilizes 30 organizational fundamentals that describethecharacteristicsof ourteamanddeneourwork.Examiningwhatwearedoingwellandwhatwe do even better resulted in our organization-wide Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) initiative. The Children’s Institute also implemented a robust Trauma Initiative that addresses the implications traumatic events have across the lifespan, both physiologically and psychologically.

We consistently reinvigorate our legacy of caring through our outpatient physical and behavioral health services, educational services, autism services, early intervention services, and family support services. Our two most recent additions – Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for families impacted by autism and Early Intervention services throughourstrategicafliationwithTheEarlyLearningInstitute(teli)ghaveallowedustoreacheven with our services.

Amazing Kids offers a glimpse into our culture of care and the services and expertise that make us unique.

It’s our privilege to share with you the inspirational stories of Nolan Feeney, Tatiana Summers, Jake Haney, Alonzo Richardson, and the Brown family, and how they have grown with support from The Children’s Institute.

Nolan grows into his best self

Preschooler Nolan Feeney, age four, speaks in full sentences. A silly, intelligent, and thoughtful child, he describes what he needs and how he feels. He plays with his classmates, uses his imagination, and shares close connections with his family. Nolan also has autism spectrum disorder.

Until the age of three, he received services from teli (The Early Learning Institute) – a trusted provider of early intervention services and an affiliate of The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. Nolan participated in weekly sessions with his developmental, occupational, and speech therapists at home and in daycare. With reinforcement from his parents and teachers, Nolan began to make strides in feeding, eye contact, communication, socialization, and adjusting to transitions.

“The therapists at teli came into our lives at a pivotal time in Nolan’s development,” explains Kara Feeney, Nolan’s mom. “They unlocked Nolan’s hidden world and began the process of integrating it with the rest of our family’s neurotypical world. Early intervention and teli gave us the tools we needed to ensure that Nolan will grow into the best version of himself.”

“The Children’s Institute is mindful about building partnerships – like the one we have with teli – that enhance our capacity to support kids at every stage of life, as well as their families,” says Dr. Wendy Pardee, president and CEO of both The Children’s Institute and teli. “We want every family to feel engaged with a unied community of support for their child, and to equip them with the tools and resources they need to help their children learn and grow.”

Nolan receives physical therapy at The Children’s Institute’s Bridgeville location. Sessions focus on increasing ankle strength and overall muscular coordination through a variety of exercises, like single leg balancing, single leg hopping, balancing on a stability ball, balancing on obstacles, hopscotch, and throwing/catching balls.

“Tatiana didn’t speak her first word until she was six years old,” says Shawna Williams-Bradshaw, Tatiana’s grandmother and adoptive parent. “As an 11-year-old, she fills our home with words all day long.”

Communication is difcult for children with autism spectrum disorder and can challenges for their families. Team members at The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh have expertise in helping kids better understand and interact with the world around them.

lThe Childrenjs Institute has vast knowledge of kids on the spectrum, and th the best in every child,” Williams-Bradshaw explains. “Her therapists saw in Tatiana what I saw in her. They knew she was an amazing kid, and they did everything they could to learn how her mind works.”

When Tatiana Summers started receiving physical health services at The Children’s Institute at ageve,shedidnotspeakandwasunabletomakeeyecontact,andwasalsoimpulsiv prone to outbursts of frustration. Coordinated services initially included physical, occupational, nutrition, and speech therapies. Currently, Tatiana receives weekly speech therapy from The Children’s Institute, typically onsite at the Squirrel Hill campus or sometimes through telehealth. She loves to talk, has a great sight-word vocabulary, is energetic and cheerful, and is always willing to try new things.

They also practice having appropriate conversations, “reading the room” so her tone and subject matter match current conversation, and understanding gurativelanguage.

“It is important for Tatiana to be able to communicate effectively to become more independent,” Hartman explains.lIn her ve years atThe Childrenjs Institute,she has mature and has made good progress overcoming a number of challenging behaviors. By practicing in safe places like The Children’s Institute and with family, Tatiana is learning a lot about how to appropriately connect with others.”

“Today is better than yesterday,” says Williams-Bradshaw. “And tomorrow will be better than today. With all the tomorrows we have to look forward to, I have an abundance of hope for Tatiana’s future and her place in this world.”

At The Children’s Institute, “the team” is a multidisciplinary group that includes therapists and other direct care providers, teachers and paraprofessionals, family services professionals, and support staff. While diverse in backgrounds, knowledge base, and expertise, the team is connected by a common love for children and families.

“What makes the team special is the level of care and attention given to each and every person,” describes Abby Pittinaro, MBA, director of development. “There is also a level of enthusiasm and colorfulness that is sprinkled across the organization, which makes it really fun to come to work or work from home.”

The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, a leader in providing services to children with autism and their families, officially launched its Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program in 2021. ABA focuses on increasing communication and social skills, while decreasing challenging behaviors, to improve learning, social interactions, and quality of life.

“The Children’s Institute is a trusted provider and has been delivering highquality, effective ABA programming in The Day School for many years prior to the ofcial program launch,m explains Allyson Paracat Dixon, M.Ed., BCBA, regional director of autism services at The Children’s Institute. “By offering outpatient ABA as a core component of our autism services, we can reach many more children – as young as two years old – with impactful care.”

Comprehensive ABA services are offered at The Children’s Institute in Squirrel Hill, as well as via telehealth. The clinic-based environment makes collaboration with other areas of outpatient service available as needed with occupational, physical, and speech language therapy all under one roof. Services are provided in a fun and engaging space designed to enhance the work of the clinical team.

“Our treatment space includes a large area for group activities that encourages communication and socialization,” explains Dixon. “We also have smaller rooms for individual sessions. Personalized treatment totes, customized for each child, are lled with favorite toys and special activities as motivation to work toward certain goals. While ABA is very scientic and data driven, achieving the best outcomes looks and feels like play.”

Assessment, goal-setting, and individualized treatments are overseen by highlytrained,masterjslevelBoardCertiedBehaviorAnalysts(BCBAs)who , alsowork closely with the family’s medical provider and school district. These practitioners work with behavior technicians who hold bachelor’s degrees or are bachelor’sprepared and have expertise in implementing treatment plans, and in collecting and analyzing data to work toward improving the quality of life for kids with autism and their families.

“Our experts work with families and clients to develop goals today that will helpthemreachtheirself-denedgoalsfortheirfuture,mDixonexplains.lOne amazing kid who began receiving services about a year ago had very little communication, and he would often cry, run away, and hit when he couldn’t express his needs. By attending our program ve days a week, he has developed signicantly more language, both vocal and using alternative communication methods. His tantrum behavior has decreased dramatically, and he has progressed from tolerating other kids to playing and laughing with his friends in the ABA clinic.”

Basketballs, tennis balls, golf balls, super balls. Give Alonzo Richardson a ball of any size and he’ll bounce it. His dribbling skills are well known throughout The Day School at The Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh.

“Alonzo loves going to The Day School,” says his father Nate Richardson. “He is non-verbal, so Alonzo ‘tells’ us by his actions instead of using words. He jumps out of the car smiling and runs to the door every day, giving big hugs to staff members along the way. Everyone there cares so much about Alonzo and our family.”

The team of experts at The Day School provides specialized education, autism support, and multiple disabilities support to nearly 200 students each year. Alonzo, age 12, is in an autism support classroom withveotherstudents.WhenherstcametoTheDaySchoolinAlonzo 2018, lackedappropriatesocia skills and struggled with outbursts during his interactions with adults and his peers. With consistent attention from his certied special education teachers, in addition to speech, occ behavioral therapies, Alonzo’s progress has been amazing – even during the pandemic – with huge support from his parents and siblings.

“We participated in virtual learning for most of the 2020-2021 school year,” Richardson explains. “I was the principal, the custodian, the lunch lady, and the classroom helper. With all of the challenges of COVID-19 on top of Alonzojs autism, being online with his teachers helped Alonzo continue achieve goals related to self-care, social skills, positive behaviors, and academics.”

Alonzo returned to in-person learning in the spring of 2021. A sixth grader at the start of the 2021-2022 school year, he moved to a different autism support classroom, a newly transformed space at The Day School.

“Alonzo is thriving in his new environment,” says his teacher, Chelsea Balawejder. “We have a large classroom with plenty of room for breakout areas, a place to eat lunch, and a bathroom.

This limits the number of transitions to different areas of the school that we make in a day, which can be difcult for kids with autism. We also have two connected sensor gross motor rooms where a student can go to rest and recharge. Alonzo has space to bounce all the balls he wants, and then he returns to the class focused and ready to learn.”

“Alonzo is enjoying the new level of independence he has achieved, and our home is a much calmer place now that his outbursts have gone from 10 or more each day to one or two in a week,” says Richardson. “It is so good to see him maturing, learning to communicate his needs, and interacting with others.”

“I enjoy every moment with my children,” says Marcy Brown. “And I never take those moments for granted now that we’re all together again.”

Marcy and Daniel Brown are the parents of seven children, ages 2-14. When a series of complicated life challenges resulted in the children being removed from their care, the couple’s singular goal was to bring all of them back to a safe and healthy home. With help from relatives, government agencies, and the Family Support Services team at The Children’s Instituteof Pittsburgh(formerlyProjectSTAR)the , Brownfamilyhasbeenfullyreuniedsince the summer of 2021.

“Those were emotional times for all of us,” Marcy remembers. “At the beginning, our visits were only weekly, and they had to be supervised. It took more than a year from the time our rst child left foster care to when everyone was nally home with us.That waiting was just so hard.”

The Family Support Services team at The Children’s Institute provides evidence-based, trauma-informed services to help families grow stronger. With locations in Allegheny, Beaver, Washington, and Westmoreland counties, team members meet county-referred families close to home with preservation and reunication services; in-home, intensive familysupport;andindividualizedcaretomeetspecicneeds.Overtime,parentingskills and resources were introduced to the Browns by providers including The Children’s Institute that empowered them to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing home for their children.

“Marcy and Daniel did everything they needed to do to bring their children home,” describes The Children’s Institute’s Katie Bittner, supervisor of in-home Family Support Services for Beaver County. “The Browns are now a happy, bonded, and loving family of nine because they were open to receiving help. Their motivation to work well with The Children’s Institute and other collaborating service providers such as Children and Youth Services and additional parenting programs has led to the best outcome for their whole family.”

Duringthereunicationprocess,theBrownsreceivedvisitsfromtheFamilySupportServices team multiple times each week. Those visits steadily decreased as Marcy and Daniel continued to meet their goals. Because of their success, the family no longer receives services, though Marcy and Katie still connect on occasion.

“We have always loved our children very much,” Marcy explains. “I was a good mom before, but I’m a better mother today. Daniel and I are showing our kids by our example that they can accomplish anything if they work hard and don’t give up.”
