HI, I’M ART! Close your eyes with me and imagine your favorite place in the whole wide world. What does that place look like? How do people use that space? How does that space make you feel? What colors do you see? I love to draw places and things that I’ve visited and read about in books. Sometimes, I even like to draw things that I’ve dreamt or imagined! Join me as I explore some Amazing Cities – starting with some fun places in Texas, also known as the Lone Star State. I could really use your imagination to help bring my friends’ drawings from Gensler Texas to life. So lets get to coloring!

AUSTIN, TEXAS Let’s begin our journey in downtown Austin, Texas – the land of breakfast tacos and live music! There’s so much to see (and hear) in this city. Did you know that Austin is the state capital of Texas? Austin has more than 2 million residents and all those people, cultures, and cuisine create a very funky vibe. At sunset, you can watch more than a million Mexican free-tailed bats pour into the evening sky beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge. You could sling a Frisbee at Zilker Park to a friend or cool off with a dip in Lake Travis. There’s so much to do, but you must always remember - Keep Austin Weird!

DID YOU KNOW... A topographic map is one that shows the physical fetures of the land. The closer the contour lines are to each other, the steeper the slope of the land. You could say that reading a topographic map has its ups and downs. Can you find the highest and lowest point on the map?

DALLAS, TEXAS The city of Dallas, Texas, also known as Big D, is a bustling Metroplex in the north part of the state. It’s a contemporary and cosmopolitan city with tons of restaurants and places to go shopping! There are huge skyscrapers in its downtown area (as you know, everything is bigger in Texas!) like Bank of America Plaza and Reunion Tower, which lights up different colors at night. During October, you can visit the State Fair of Texas and chow down on a corn dog in front of the 55-foot tall statue named Big Tex! He greets visitors every day with a big “HOWDY FOLKS!”

HOUSTON, TEXAS Now we travel over to Houston, Texas – also known as the Bayou City. This city is connected to the rest of the globe in many ways – it is the world capital for space exploration with NASA nearby and also the energy capital of the world. Every spring, you can visit Houston to see the Livestock Show & Rodeo – the largest rodeo in the world with 1.8 million visitors! Also, this city is the most diverse in America and more than 90 languages are spoken here. Other things to do here include take a tour of the home of the Astros at Minute Maid Park, relax on the beach in nearby Galveston and flutter with butterflies at the Cockrell Butterfly Center. So much to do!

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS The colorful city of San Antonio, Texas is known for its long-standing state history with remaining structures like The Alamo “Remember The Alamo!” - and historic Spanish Missions. You can visit this city anytime, but it’s especially fun to see during the Fiesta Festival in April, which is basically a 10-day, citywide party! The festival began in 1891 to honor the memory of the battles of Texas Revolution! Some other great sights to see in the city are the Japanese Tea Garden and the neighboring San Antonio Zoo, which happens to be the third largest zoo in the country with over 3,500 animals and an aquarium. Don’t forget to eat some Tex-Mex food while you’re here!
