Audry (AKA Sexy Mexi) has been singing as long as she can remember. In elementary school she was always winning the talent shows. When she attended school in Canyon, Audry was always involved with anything that had to do with performing. One of her superiors saw something special in her. He mentioned this to Jose (Audry’s manager and father) and opened his eyes to see how talented his little girl really was. Jose quit his job and Audry started home schooling, all focus was now on making this dream a reality. “I call him my “Dad-Ager”, he has been managing my career professionaly since the age of 14.” This is how “Sexy Mexi” was born. Anywhere that Audry could perform, she did...karokoe, restaurants, birthday parties..... everyone in town would soon know who Sexy Mexi was. She continued to grow as an artist and soon she was at Flamingos, Gamboas, Club Baloo, Azteca (just to name a few). They soon found a studio and producers in the Dallas and Houston area. From there, the dream flourished into reality. With her first single out “Dome Un Besico....Give me a kiss” and the # 1 hit on 96.9 “Can’t let her go” life for this 18 year old dreamer was just beginning. Las Vegas, Las Angeles, New York, and many other places were now being visited. Living the dream... performing in front of massive crowds. She is right at home on stage. “She just has it” Jose says... “Sometimes I look at her and my eyes well up.” For Audry she says, “it gives me goose bumps to hear them cheering for me.” At every event they have special give-aways.. They give out Tshirts, CD’s, posters and even money. “They took time out of their day to come see me and I want to do something for them. My fans are my biggest motivation.” You may know this young artist by the name of “Sexy Mexi” but she has decided to go with her real name Audry because she was constantly being mistaken her for a Spanish Singer and being pulled in that direction. “Just trying to expose myself more to a different crowd” Her fashion and style has also been tweaked. Now going with a more punk-rock look. All of Audry’s stage outfits and clothing are specially designed and made for her by manager and dad Jose Gutierrez. Audry admits “He’ll look at me weird, then add a belt or a scarf to what I picked out and it always looks better after he has added his magic touch.” Not only does Jose Guittierrez manage and design clothes. He also does all of the photography, lighting and effects at the shows. These are just a few of the many responsibilities this dedicated dad takes on. “I’m always looking for new ways to promote her. My wife says that I spend too much on promotional things, but then someone will mention it and she admits that it was good idea.” You can tell by looking at Jose that his mind is constantly going, thinking up new ideas. Audry’s confident yet humble self image make this talented young lady a promising rising star. Always reaching and striving forward toward her Dream. Her motto: “Going to the Top - Always Non-stop. Join the Sexy Mexi Movement.” Focus on her vision leaves no time for boys. (Bet that makes Dad happy. :) It doesn’t seem to bother Audry though. “I’ve got my career to keep me busy. Too busy for any of that.” Music is her life, her world, her everything. Her dedication and passion is apparent in every aspect of her life. Performing with some of the biggest names in the music industry, Audry has had the opportunity of working with Artist such as Lil Flip, Brown Boy, Mr. Capone, R. Kelly, Dem Franchize Boiz, Chicago Bling, Selena’s family, Mossore, Jenni Rivera and many others. I look forward to seeing who is next on this list. Her inspiration has come from a variety of singers. Elvis, Timbaland, Beethoven, Selena, Christina Aquilera. “Anyone who feels and creates their music with true emotion” she says. Audry originally started out doing covers but now she writes and composes all of her own music. The lyrics and music on her CD give us a peak into this young artist’s thoughts. If you would like to hear some of her music you can purchase a CD at Hasting’s, I-tunes, CD Baby, Napster, anywhere online that is digital. You can also order through snail mail and receive a signed copy with bonus various gifts. She is also very active with her Myspace page. www.myspace.com/audrymusic. She says “I personally comment back to all of my fans that comment me.” You can go there to see all upcoming events and stories of her prior ones as well. Jose Gutierrez has been approached several times to take on managing other aspiring artist here locally. Currently 100% of his focus is on Audry but he is coming around to the idea of taking on some new clients. “If you have the talent, He is not a magician but he can work magic.” Audry claims. If you would like to inquire about getting a new manager Jose is the one to call. Jose Guitierrez (AKA Joe Guti) 806 236-8983. You can also call this number to book Audry for your next show.

Audry finishes with...“Special thanks to Melinda Guitierrez and Aunt Madrigal. Thank you to my manager, I wouldn’t be where I am at without you. And of course Thank you to all of my Fans... Love you Muah.”

Dazzling Designs By Amy Baucom Body painting has existed for many centuries, in many forms. Often worn during ceremonies, it still exists in one form or another among the indigenous people of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. A semi-permanent form of body painting called Mehndi, uses dyes made of henna, and is still practiced in India and the Middle East.

Davison is no amateur. In Seeboden, Austria, at the World Body Painting Competition, Davison came in 8 th place in the finals, right behind the afore mentioned Reid, who came in 5th. Out of 77 competitors from all over the world, she came in 12th overall in the finals with her amazing designs. In addition to cheek painting and face painting, Davison also does full body painting, which can take any where from three to nine hours, depending on the design. Using cosmetic sponges and acrylic brushes, Davison’s designs are mostly freehand, although sometimes she uses stencils to create specific effects.

But, if you can’t get to any of those exotic locals, or don’t want anything permanent, then AmaDazzle is the place for you. Christina Davison, owner of AmaDazzle, started face painting as an addition to providing pony rides at children’s parties in 2004. Davison took a face painting workshop in 2006, taught by Mark Reid, who said that because of her skills, Christina should have been teaching the class instead of attending it. Mostly done free-hand, Davison can do pretty much any design the customer wants.

In November 2007, she did a commissioned set of paintings for Roasters in the Hastings location on 45th Street in Amarillo. Those paintings are available for sale as a calendar on her website.

Using non-toxic, cosmetically safe paints, Davison works quickly, finishing a face painting in as little as three minutes. The paint goes on easily, and is water-based, so it can be rinsed off with minimal trouble. Although, Davison says, the darker purple can sometimes take a few days to disappear. She also states that most amateurs use craft paint, which can cause allergic reactions or even burns, and cautions that just because the product says non-toxic, doesn’t mean it won’t adversely react on the skin. For this reason, Davison uses only theatre cosmetics or body paints she buys from reputable companies such as Mehron brand’s Paradise Face Paint.

Her Gestational Art is a continuation of the practice of prenatal photography, and takes one to two hours to complete. One design, titled, “Hush Little Baby” and based on the song, took roughly four hours to complete. Her prices for belly painting range from $65-$120 or more, depending on the design, and the time it takes to complete it. Christina, a member of the Amarillo Symphony, teaches Cello classes at Amarillo College, and has taught body and face painting at workshops all over the United States and the United Kingdom. Last Halloween, Davison painted Kimbo Ishii-Eto, director of the Symphony, as Dracula, and also does painting for bar staff and anybody who wants a little something different for Halloween.

s tyle & beauty scene Exposure to style & beauty in Amarillo... Bella Luna Day Spa

By Amy Baucom Rest, relaxation, pampering; we can all use that from time to time, and what a better place to do so than Bella Luna Day Spa? Cheryl Rogers has owned Bella Luna for six years, and has 23 years experience in the business. She is also the only licensed makeup artist at the spa. Through the use of mineral makeup, Cheryl can make clients look glamorous or natural, without being overdone. The spa is a major retailer for Dermalogica, but is soon to launch their own line of products. There are several services to choose from at Bella Luna, including facials, masks, waxing, makeup application, spa body therapy, body wraps, salt glove and manicures and pedicures. They do not, however, do artificial nails, or permanent makeup. But the spa’s friendly staff can help you decide

on a package that best fulfills your needs. May is Bella Luna’s biggest month by far, and a Mother’s Day package is offered to mothers and daughters. Included in the package is a pedicure, a Chardonnay Scrub, which smells like Chardonnay, as well as a Chardonnay body wrap. Manicures, pedicures, and body treatments are all centered around Olavie products, which include creams and lotions. What better way to show appreciation to the mother in your life, than with a gift card for the Mother’s Day package! Customer comfort and satisfaction is high priority at Bella Luna, and most of their clientele are repeat customers whom the staff know on a first-name basis. The spa saw eighty customers a week during the month of February, and Cheryl says that twelve percent of her clientele are male. Therefore, she offers a gentlemen’s package, which includes massages, facials and pedicures. Because, even men are finding out the benefits of a good pedicure. They also offer couples massage, where both husband and wife are given massages at the same time. There are two professionally licensed female massage therapists at the spa now, and they are great at making the clients feel at ease and comfortable.

Scarab Art By Amy Baucom The ancient Egyptians believed the Scarab Beetle to be a protector against all evil, and imagined a giant Scarab to have rolled the ball of the sun across the sky. Thus, the beetle’s association with the Egyptian Sun God, Ra. In many legends, the lowly insect is credited with creating the world. Michael Westmoreland uses the small but sacred beetle as the logo f or his art studio, aptly named, Scarab Art. Retired from medicine in 1999, Westmoreland grew up in Marietta, Oklahoma and did his residency at Baylor University. Westmoreland worked at the Dallas Presbyterian Hospital’s Sleep Disorder Clinic before he and his wife moved to Amarillo in 1983, where he helped to get the Amarillo Sleep Disorder Clinic accredited. After his retirement, and because he’d always wanted to do sculpture, he says he “spent the first year in my workshop learning not to cut off my hands.” Westmoreland certainly has been successful in that endeavor; and in May of 2008, with all his limbs and digits intact, opened his studio in the Sunset Art Galleries on Plains Blvd. in Amarillo. Using wood and epoxy resins, Westmoreland started out in his workshop doing abstract and semiabstract art before going back to the classic art forms, such as nudes

M A Y 2 0 0 9 • 7B and busts. Westmoreland says he doesn’t use his art to “make a statement”, and shaping and making something in 3-dimension is something he enjoys doing because of the freedom of art. Clay is Westmoreland’s favorite medium, because mistakes are easily fixed, and it’s interesting to start out with something in mind and watch the clay “evolve” as the work progresses. Wood, plaster and Vatican stone, a harder material than plaster, are used in most of his creations. Shakespearean characters are a big part of Scarab Art’s collection, with notables such as the portrayal of Shylock, from The Merchant of Venice, titled “Do We Not Bleed”, or a beautiful silver rendition of the drowned Ophelia, and a wire sculpture of the Three Witches from the play Macbeth. Westmoreland also has a series of sculptures depicting Winter Solstices through out the years. These are done in black and red, with the unifying elements being the sun and moon. Years 1-5 are complete, with years 6 and 7 in progress. Not much bronze work is done by Scarab Art, as bronze is expensive and time consuming, and has to be shipped to the Allen Houser Foundry in New Mexico for the process of bronzing. Allen Houser is famous for his American Indian art depicting Native Americans wrapped in blankets, or crying. Westmoreland says he doesn’t believe the Native American people were sad all the time, and envisions a sculpture of Indians laughing around a campfire. Currently, Dr. Westmoreland is working on a plaster sculpture of a woman, titled “Ava“. Ava is still in progress, as her hands will have to be made of epoxy resin and fitted onto her arms later. Westmoreland spends about 4 hours a day on Ava, and works on her in his studio at the Art Gallery. The galleries’ hours are 10 am to 6pm, and all of Westmoreland’s art is for sale, except for the portraits of his wife. It can also be seen on his website, www.scrabart.net Sunset Galleries hosts First Friday Night, the first Friday of every month from 5-9pm, and also Second Saturday, on the second Saturday of the month. Scarab Art is open during these times for you to come in and take a look at some of the fascinating, unique artwork of Michael Westmoreland. More often than not, you’ll find him sitting on a stool, working on his latest project. Go by and visit with him. You’ll be glad you did.
