Fireworks Planned for Downtown Saturday, June 30th The Chamber is just one of many local organizations that are coming together to bring a big event and fireworks show to downtown on Saturday, June 30th for the 2nd Annual Route 66 Celebration. A local organizing committee was formed to carry on the tradition of fireworks in Amarillo to celebrate America and the official Mother Road of Route 66 that passes through our town. We know...the 30th is NOT July 4th. However, years ago the decision was made to hold Amarillo’s fireworks event on the Saturday before the Independence Day holiday for several reasons. One is out of respect for the Canyon Chamber of Commerce event that is held on the actual holiday, and another being the difficulty to find volunteers willing to give up their holiday time with family and friends. We think that our country and its heroes can never be celebrated enough, so this event gives the community the option of taking in one or more of the area’s fireworks displays and paying tribute to our great country, regardless of the date on the calendar. In addition to fireworks downtown, there are a number of other fun events taking place all over town on Saturday. Center City’s Amarillo Community Market that happens every Saturday through October 6th (typically on the Chamber grounds) will move slightly north to 6th & Polk this weekend from 9am—1pm. Shop for homemade and home-grown items, crafts, gifts and more. Get more info at www.amarillocommunitymarket.com. Or stroll down Historic Route 66 on 6th Avenue between Georgia and Western from 10am—4pm Saturday to shop, dine, antique, or check out the car show and more for their Route 66 Festival. Details can be found at www.amarillo66.com. Finish up the day downtown from 4pm—1030pm for the big Route 66 Celebration. There will be music on 2 stages. Local DJ Tommy the Hacker will take the Happy State Bank Stage at 6th & Taylor at 4pm. The Amarillo National Bank Stage at 6th & Polk will feature live music from the Dust Jackets at 5pm, Andy Chase at 610pm, Rock Bottom at 720pm, and Insufficient Funds at 830pm. Weather permitting, a spectacular fireworks display over downtown will happen around 945pm. There is no admission cost to the downtown event, so come take in some great music and entertainment for FREE! Don’t forget your wallet and appetite to check out Food Truck Alley along 7th between Taylor & Fillmore or the Joe’s Hospitality Center on Taylor between 5th & 6th for your choice of food and drinks from more than 18 vendors. And of course there are great local Chamber member restaurants and clubs downtown too including Moondoggy’s Pizza & Pub, Six Car Pub & Brewery, Crush Wine Bar & Grill, and Esquire Jazz Club who is waiving their cover charge on Saturday. Special thanks to our presenting sponsors Amarillo National Bank and Happy State Bank, as well as Amarillo Globe-News, Street Toyota, Xcel Energy, United Supermarkets, Center City of Amarillo, the City of Amarillo, and KGNC FM who will broadcast the music to go along with the fireworks display on 97.9.
