ORIENTATION WEEK 2024

THE AMA (NSW) TEAM toured hospitals across the state during 2024 Orientation Week for first year Doctors-in-Training.
The team of Workplace Relations Advisors outlined the many benefits available to members and provided recruits with guidance on topics including payslips, leave entitlements and remuneration.
The team visited nine hospitals, including Westmead Hospital, Sydney Local Health District, St George Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, Wollongong Hospital, Tamworth Base Hospital, John Hunter Hospital Newcastle, Tweed Hospital and Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.
Doctors-in-training were offered free scrub caps when signing up and entered into a raffle to win free membership, a $100 gift card or a $50 gift card. They were also provided with resources including the new DIT Pay Guide. The lucky prize winners have been contacted! dr.

THE JOINT MEDICAL PROGRAM is a two-stage five-year program comprising of a Bachelor of Medical Science (stage one) and Doctor of Medicine (stage two), offered jointly in partnership by the University of Newcastle and the University of New England (UNE). Dr Madeleine de Carle was awarded the prize for topping years four and five.
Dr de Carle said “I worked really hard. It’s always been really important to me from a patient perspective that I learn as much as possible, but I was quite surprised I achieved the highest results given I was in a cohort of incredible people who also worked really hard”.
Dr de Carle was the first (UNE) student to win the award which she says is testament to the Armidale medical school and the work that is put into developing their clinical school.

CONGRATULATIONS TO DR MADELEINE DE CARLE,
THE RECIPIENT OF AUSTRALIAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
(NSW)
LIMITED PRIZE FOR THE JOINT MEDICAL PROGRAM

Growing up in Sydney Dr de Carle cites as her inspiration her mother Larissa, a vet and her “pop” David, a gastroenterologist. “For me medicine was the perfect mix between spending time with people and doing maths and science. I didn’t get into medicine straight away but I was able to work hard and get in eventually thanks to the joint program.”
Dr de Carle is a strong advocate for the AMA “I’ve been involved with the AMA (NSW) from the end of medical school and at the beginnings of being a JMO. I am now a part of the doctors-intraining committee. It’s great to see the advocacy work that you guys are doing for JMOs, it has been wonderful to see and it has definitely been felt on our end from myself and my colleagues.”
“Thanks so much to AMA (NSW) for the $1000 prize. It absolutely useful; I have travelled around for regional and rural rotations, so it has really helped with the finances and transport to those rural towns.” dr.
