Hi, I’m Amanda. I am a fifth year student in Interior Architecture at Kansas State University. I find absolute joy in exploring the balance between form and function, and love learning all about design. To me, design is more than just arranging spaces; it’s about captivating a journey through storytelling, where every line, texture, and color choice tells the emotion and shapes the experience. Whether sketching conceptual ideas or diving into the technical aspects of design, I approach each task with excitement and dedication, always striving to push the boundaries.

HURRICANE RIDGE VISITOR CENTER

PROFESSIONAL WORK

This studio project entailed designing an advertisement office for NEXT. NEXT is a design competition created by Steelcase to challenge interior design/architecture students to image the workplace of the future. The building is located in Fulton Market, Chicago, and is around 16,000 square feet. The goal for this project is to respond to the ever-changing demands of workplace design, inclusive design principles, and incorporate many different design strategies within 16,000 square feet.
“Legacy Inspires Innovation” blends Chicago’s rich modernist history with contemporary design and technology, creating a workspace that honors the past while looking toward the future. Inspired by the city’s industrial architecture, the design incorporates solid, enclosed spaces for focused work, using materials like exposed steel, brick, and polished concrete to evoke permanence and connect with Chicago’s iconic industrial aesthetic. In contrast, open, light-filled modular spaces reflect the innovation aspect, fostering collaboration and flexibility through features like glass partitions, natural light, and adaptable layouts. By merging historical elements with modern technology, the design creates an environment that fosters productivity, collaboration, and forward-thinking growth.

Legacy Inspires Innovation reimagines the past by integrating Chicago’s rich modernist historical elements with design and technology.

Inspired by the modernist architects that made Chicago the birthplace of modern architecture, the titles of NEXT Advertisement meeting rooms tie the project back to where it all began as well as creating a memorable experience that guides navigation.

TEAM MEETING

CLIENT

5TH YEAR FALL SEMESTER - GROUP

This studio project was an interdisciplinary collaboration with groups of three that included one architecture student, one landscape architecture student, and one interior architecture student. The topic for this project was “housing is health,” and we were given a broad site where we selected a specific location and created a project based on the needs of the area. The site was located in Philadelphia off West Lehigh Avenue, where a housing crisis is taking place. My group’s idea was to develop a project that could support the community by offering childcare and providing housing specifically for single parents.
Growing Together centers on the idea that people grow, adapt, and support one another over time, especially within a community. For this project, the goal was to create a design that helps single parents and their children build stability while also connecting with the neighborhood around them. We approached this concept by creating spaces that encourage both independence and togetherness, using shared areas, natural materials, and comfortable transitions between zones. Overall, the design focuses on making a place where families can feel supported, grow at their own pace, and build a stronger sense of belonging.

• Provide flexible unit sizes for families of different needs
• High quality/durability and low maintenance materials and finishes
• Create shared spaces that provide interaction and social connections
• Providing resources for learning and development
• Design multipurpose spaces for personal and professional growth
• Immediate sites green space (sensory or educational games)
• Use local art, murals, and cultural storytelling in design
• Multipurpose room that can expand into a space for cultural events
• Reflect neighborhood history and values in architectural elements
• Providing access to wellness resources
• Connection to green space
• Creating well-lit pathways and entrances (streetscapes)
• Defining private vs public spaces
• Creating circulation to adjacent landmarks and green spaces

The concept diagram reinforces Growing Together by illustrating shared roots and continuous cycles of growth between parents, children, and the community. This idea is reflected in the material palette through natural textures, warm wood tones, and layered finishes that represent stability, connection, and change over time.

ENSURE ACCESSIBLE
HOUSING & RESOURCES

This studio project was a five week project that entailed choosing a National Park and designing a visitor center from the ground up as well as designing the parking and landscape. The only requirements for this project were that the building needed to be 2,500 square feet and had to have an experiential space tied to Olympic National Park.
Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center is located at Olympic National Park in Washington. In May of 2023 the original Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center was struck by lightning and burned down. This lead me to my concept of Preserve and Protect. The purpose of this rebuild is to behind the park, as well as keep the amazing views of the mountains. I did this by keeping the existing ski rental space, big open windows for views, and creating interactive spaces for people to come enjoy the history.

This photo shows what the visitor’s center looked like before the tragic fire with the amazing mountain views.

This photo shows what was left after the building got struck by lighting and burnt to the ground.

For this project, I wanted to create details that not only made the space more unique, but also incorporated my concept of preserve and protect by using small details from freshly groomed snow, chair lifts, and mountain tops to enhance the visitor center journey.

RENTAL SERVICE

LEARNING STATION

This studio project entailed designing a retail space combined with an interactive space to showcase an interactive experience. Elevate Beauty Bar is in Los Angeles, California, located near Rodeo Drive. The purpose for this space is to give many people the opportunity to reach their beauty goals by walking into this space.
Embracing the concept of layers, Elevate offers a multidimensional experience that celebrates the natural glow of hair, skin, and nails. The salon’s design draws inspiration from the interplay of light and darkness, creating a harmonious contrast that highlights the beauty of each individual. Through intricate sculpting of walls and strategic use of materials, forms are carved out to reveal and enrich the space. Layering structures within the walls and ceilings contrasts solidity and airiness, creating visual intrigue. Lighting is carefully orchestrated to illuminate the various dimensions, while the interplay of colors and textures defines the space, imparting a luxurious, multi-layered ambiance.

POPULOUS INTERNSHIP - UBS ARENA SUITE RESTROOM

I worked alongside Nina Richman on this project when UBS Arena needed to quickly add a restroom within a high end suite. Nina shared examples of existing restrooms throughout the arena, which use color blocking in the stalls and a distinct design language. The goal was to create a restroom that felt cohesive with the club environment while matching the aesthetic of the other restrooms already in the building and maintaining overall design consistency.
A major part of my role involved material selection and coordination. I reviewed specification sheets to understand product requirements, durability, and cost, and helped select materials that aligned with those already being used throughout the project. I also ordered material samples and communicated directly with product representatives to confirm availability. Through this process, I gained valuable hands-on experience with material specifications, sourcing, and real-world coordination, which strengthened my understanding of how design decisions translate into built spaces.

Throughout my internship, I learned an incredible amount and gained hands on experience working on a variety of projects at different stages of the design process. I had the opportunity to contribute to several confidential projects, which strengthened my sense of professionalism and trust while allowing me to apply my skills in real world situations. I was also given the chance to take the lead on select tasks, helping me build confidence in my decision making and communication abilities. Overall, the internship was both challenging and enjoyable, and it played a significant role in my growth as a designer and as a professional.

The goal for this furniture piece was to create a coffee table that was sturdy, easy to rearrange, and have places to put drinks and work on. I created a very simple rectangular shape main table that was created using many pieces of cut and joined cherry wood dominoed and glued together. I then designed an addition to the table out of walnut. This piece has a live edge and is made to be able to pick up and move around depending on how the table is placed in the space. Overall, I created a table that is simple and pleasing to the eye with multiple uses for a space.

The goal for these furniture pieces was to create a modular and flexible bedroom set that could easily adapt to different spaces. In collaboration with two classmates, we designed cohesive pieces that respond to the needs of small living environments. We designed three components: a nightstand, a console table that doubles as a desk, and a clothing and storage rack that can be reconfigured in various arrangements. Together, the set offers versatility not only for the bedroom but also for other areas of the home.

The goal for this furniture piece was to create a stool that challenged my strengths in joinery while also allowing me to learn how to work with leather. I designed a simple box form but focused heavily on creating a castle joint that allows each piece to fit securely within one another without the use of hardware. Through this process, I learned how to cut, finish, and integrate leather, making the stool both sturdy and comfortable. Overall, I created a stool that is visually simple, lightweight, comfortable, and thoughtfully crafted through precise joinery and material exploration.

The goal for this furniture piece was to design a chair that was visually appealing, comfortable, and durable. I aimed to create a design that could be easily duplicated while including detailed moments that made the chair feel sleek and refined. I used the CNC and learned the Shaper tool to fabricate the components, then applied my joinery knowledge from the stool project to assemble the chair without hardware. I also built on my leatherwork experience from the stool, adding detail and focusing on how the leather connects to the structure to enhance both function and appearance.
