or many people, inheriting wealth from their parents comes too late in life. The Institute for Fiscal Studies believes that those born in the 1970’s will be on average 62 years old when their last surviving parent dies. The wealth of the retired generation would be much better utilised if it were received by children and grandchildren at a much earlier time in their lives rather than as they approach retirement themselves. How much more pleasure can a parent or grandparent achieve than seeing their descendants benefiting from their wealth whilst they are still alive. What could be more rewarding than knowing that their wealth, which they are not relying on, can be utilised by children or grandchildren at a crucial time in their lives. There are tax advantages in passing on wealth during lifetime, especially if the parent is UK domiciled or has assets

in the UK subject to Inheritance Tax. Gifts made more than seven years before death generally fall out of account for UK inheritance Tax. There is an annual exemption of £3,000 of gifts each tax year and if you haven’t used last year’s allowance that may be added. You can make as many gifts of £250 each year as you wish, as long as they are to different people and not to those you have made other gifts to. You can make annual regular gifts of an unlimited amount each year out of surplus income as long as your standard of living is not affected. Assets don’t necessarily have to be given outright – the author [Wayne Barnett of Maplebrook Services Limited] has recently arranged for a property owned by parents and lived in by their son, daughter in law and grandchildren to be placed into trust for their lineal descendants, so that “hated daughter in law “will not personally financially benefit apart from living in the house,
especially in the event of a divorce. Trusts can be very useful receptacles to protect assets from scenarios of divorce, bankruptcy, care home fees or loss of benefits. Finally, we at Maplebrook Services wish all readers a very enjoyable Christmas and a very happy, healthy and peaceful 2021. JOKES OF THE MONTH A lawyer was reading out the will of a rich man to the people mentioned in the will: “To you, my loving wife Lucy, who stood by me in rough times, as well as good, I leave the house and €2million.” To my daughter Jessica, who looked after me in sickness and kept the business going, I leave the yacht, the business and €1 million, To my cousin Daniel, who hated me, argued with me and thought I would never mention him in my will – well you were wrong. Hi Daniel!” What’s the difference between an accountant and a lawyer? At least the accountant knows he is boring!
HELLO DECEMBER We made it to the end of the year didn’t we! And it may not have been the year we were expecting but looking on the bright side, there must have been some aspects that have been good. Lockdown has helped people assess their lives and shown them areas that they want to change, it has forced people to stop and assess their businesses and relationships and make
improvements. The pandemic has been crippling but also liberating, for me it gave me the opportunity to take the plunge and move to Cyprus, something I was always planning but was always putting it off for another year. I hope this year has given you the kick start to do something you have always wanted, for surely it has taught us that life is short and precious and we must make the most of our time. Lifestyle magazine has been going for six healthy months now, no one said it would be easy and everyone said I shouldn’t do it but here we are, going strong and it is only going to get better in 2021. Thank you to our advertisers who have supported us in
our short journey, we look forward to working with you and welcoming many more in the new year. And thank you to our readers who tell us how much they enjoy the magazine. We reached almost 10,000 online this month so thank you!! Please enjoy reading our last edition for 2020 and as always, if you want to get in touch email info@ lifestylelivingcyprus.com We may not be celebrating in our usual flamboyant style but I wish you a very merry Christmas and mostly definitely a happy and more prosperous new year for you all.

THE STORY SO FAR.....
S
ince CRPG leapt into action earlier this year, amidst one of the most dreadful global situations we have all witnessed, there has been much activity – and success - in helping UK National’s (UKNs) to obtain residency in Cyprus. For example, the Help Desk, which operates mornings only Monday to Friday, receives above average calls, emails and social media messaging, from people requesting assistance and information. This information covers a wide range of questions, one of the most pressing that is still asked is ‘why do I need to apply for residency’ – this is a predictable response from UKNs who have, perhaps, lived here for many years and who may still have their original pink slip or brown ID card – of course, there are some who do not have any form of residency - both are significant groups of people that CRPG needs to reach. Through media channels such as newspaper, magazine and radio advertising, CRPG continues to help and
6
explain the necessity of obtaining residency – especially those UKNs for whom the organisation exists. Recently, CRPG has released a series of informative videos via the CRPG You Tube channel streamed on the CRPG website and shared via social media and links on media websites. The work of CRPG has provided interesting analysis regarding UKNs living on island such as, to date, the majority of CRPG clients are female, the average age of CRPG clients is 73 years and across the island, the UKN population varies however, the highest UK population is in the Paphos region – perhaps no real surprise there! What is also interesting to CRPG is that the average length of time UKNs have lived here is 13.9 years. This type of analysis allows us to build a bigger picture of life for and amongst UKNs living in Cyprus by breaking down the basics so that we can ask critical thinking questions such as; what else can we do to reach more UKNs that need help and assistance
with their residency? This is, hopefully, where you, the reader, could help by passing on this article or calling CRPG if you need assistance with residency – or know someone that does. A principal source of CRPG is The British High Commission, based in Nicosia, which is central to the ongoing essential work of CRPG and provides an important link and relationship between CRMD in Nicosia and the UK FCDO in London - CRPG is funded by the UK FCDO UK National Support Fund which allows it to continue its essential work for UKN’s in Cyprus. The CRPG Team maintains their work even during these difficult times which means that the Help Desk and Operations Team are still working on your behalf to help you obtain those important residency documents. All it takes is just a phone call to the Help Desk 99 826 087 – or an email contactus@cyprus-crpg. org – or visit the website cyprus-crpg.org
CRPG would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy, Safe New Year!

X MAS DECOR ATION S Make sure that the 2020 festive season is as magical as ever.
With Government guidelines restricting large gatherings the emphasis for many people is to make it a fabulous family affair. The Festive Group decorate homes all around the world and their top tips are: 1. MAKING AN ENTRANCE – with a statement wreath. 2. LITTLE TOUCHES WHICH MAKE A DIFFERENCE The addition of window garlands using some of the same decorations and baubles from the tree on a long pine wreath – brightening up the windowsill and it can be seen inside and out. Staircase garland gives a luxury feel to your festive makeover and indoor festive doorways always look warm and welcoming. Fireplaces are normally a focal point in any room and tying them into the overall look of the festive makeover adds a touch of luxury and glamour. 3.THE CROWNING GLORY The tree really is the glory of any festive home. Whether it’s a real or an artificial tree you choose, make sure you pick the right size and shape to 8
suit your room and home. 4. LIGHTS Warm lights are often associated with a cosy feeling whereas icy lights are bright and sparkly – think about what vibe you want your tree to have. 5. DECORATIONS Some people prefer the ‘less is more approach’ when decorating the Christmas Tree although a luxury full tree showing little greenery is still a firm favourite. Many people opt for fuller decadent designs, laden with a range of standout baubles, ribbons and decorations, which can look sensational is simple spacious room. When choosing your decorations, ensure you opt for a range of sizes, shapes and styles to keep the overall
look interesting and add some eye-catching pieces to the mix. 6.TRENDS This year has seen a shift in trends and vintage looking trees, full of mismatched baubles, blended colour palettes and glass baubles, are very popular and remind people of Christmases gone by. There has also been a rise in demand for ‘Ombre Trees’ with bold colours at the base of the tree fading to lighter more muted tones from the same colour palette up the tree. Scandi or minimalist is also popular where is all about an organic look and the quality of the bauble not about how much is put on the tree. Luxury cream, gold and silver trees never seem to go out of fashion and family fun trees and themed trees are also popular.

FLOORS & WALLS SETUP BY AHMAD JARADAT IN 2018 Ahmad is a specialist in home decor with 24 years experience. Whilst an artist who sells his own paintings on canvas, he also supplies blinds, pergolas, astroturf and rugs. He said, "I have been always interested and love art, specially abstract, started as hobby, then my wife encouraged me to put them for sale. I like to paint things that not even I can do the same one again. Most of my paintings have emotions and a personal story behind each one and I try to reflect that with the colours I use and my imagination. I have never been to an art college. I am self taught." Speculating on the new trends for winter he says, "This winter its all mustard khaki green and dark blue. Minimal ". 12

7 TIPS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET THIS WINTER Ensure you have sandalworthy feet all year round because as the temperature drops, it can cause havoc with your feet. When your feet feel cold, it means the skin’s blood supply to the top layers of the skin have been reduced to preserve heat. No wonder they get as dry our chapped lips, even without being exposed to the elements. 1. Keep Them Clean. To avoid getting an ingrown toenail, fungus or other unpleasant things on your feet, make sure that you take the time to wash them thoroughly everyday. 2. Wear the Right Socks. 3. Moisturize Regularly. 4. Wear the Right Shoes. 5. Give Them a Rest. 6. Exercise Your Feet. 7. Understand the Importance of proper foot care.

POWER OF PERSPECTIVE
Change your mind to change your life
S
o many times in life we come across people trapped in a single perspective of a situation that limits their entire experience. Possibly thier entire existence. We can even at times get frustrated trying to understand why they just can’t see it from another perspective. You might finding yourself explaining, ‘It’s so simple, here look...’ yet they remain unable to see. Then you try to explain, ‘you don’t even need to agree, just try to understand’, but this does not help either. So why is it that people get stuck in a single perspective and do you know if it’s happening to you? Have you ever considered that you may be viewing your whole life from a single view point? Is there a story you are telling yourself about your life? Are you limiting your experience to single narrative, playing the same character over and over again? Big questions indeed. Of course we all have a story we tell ourselves about
24
our life, our relationships and what role we play. Some of us choose the victim mentality, others the saviour and some play different roles in different environments. While there is no wrong or right way of being. At the end of the day it’s all just an experience and an exploration of self. It can however be hugely empowering to know that you are able to re write your life story! This is great news, especially once you have had enough of repeating the same cycle of experiences. Yes, you can play a new role and write a new narrative. Above all, it’s far easier than you can imagine. How? you ask. The mind lives in the now and fully believes what you tell it. This makes re writing how your mind interprets past events very simple. Through techniques such as NLP, hypnotherapy and other healing therapies that work with your perception, you can literally re wire your mind back in time. Any perspective you have been conditioned to have
Ekaterina Sophia in Larnaca from childhood that limits you in your adulthood can be changed. Any fear based perspectives can also erased. New nueropathways can be created and habit building techniques then used to ensure that the new way of interacting with the world sticks. This kind of self exploitation may take a little bit of effort on your part, but the results are absolutely worth it! You can write a new story of your life and be the hero you wish to be. Once you have broken a cycle of old behaviour once and obtained a new perspectives of your world, you look at life through a fresh lense know full heartedly that everything is possible. Give yourself the gift of new perspective and be the star of the film you want to be in. Change your mind to change your life. QUEEN COLMAN
26
Playing the monarch would be a daunting task for anyone, but surely BAFTA-winning actress Olivia Colman is better equipped to pull off the required amount of pomp and posterity? As she revives her role in the new season of The Crown, the talented star reveals her hopes and fears at undertaking the most high-profile of high society roles.
O
livia Colman is already royalty in her own right as the established queen of prime-time drama, in award-winning shows Broadchurch and The Night Manager. It therefore made perfect sense for her to ascend to surely the greatest role of her career, in the Netflixproduced series. While her very British face, cool but entirely likeable demeanour, and measured, clipped accent reveal that, yes, there is certainly something very regal about the Cambridge-educated star, Colman reveals there was much work to be done in perfecting her portrayal. “They’re gave me a great voice coach who made sure I speak like the Queen,” she begins, “so I’ll just learn the lines and try to copy exactly what they do." Taking on the role of a living icon is fraught with a variety of hazards, but the seemingly unflappable Colman has
handled it with regal composure since we was cast. “I got a phone call from my agent when I was in a car to tell me I had been asked to meet with director Peter Morgan,” she says. “I think I had fairly recently finished watching the first series – all in about three nights flat – and so I was very excited. My agent was trying to be subtle, not knowing who was in the car with me… ‘It’s something about a tiara,’, and I went, ‘Oh, it’s The Crown!’; I just couldn’t hold it back.” “I’m so thrilled to be part of it.” Picking up from last season, the new series spans the 80s starting with the engagement and royal wedding of Charles and Diana. The most recent series has been criticised for being historically incorrect but is still a bingeworthy watch as Buckingham Palace and Downing Street collide with two of the
most powerful women of their era. She takes her work very seriously, and with tremendous results too, having achieved four BAFTAs and an Oscar as well as two Emmy nominations. Yet she is not one to treat herself with the same brevity as others in the spotlight, and draws a very clear line between the notion of an artist and a celebrity, visibly recoiling at the suggestion she is a national treasure. “It’s my job and that’s about it. It’s roleplay and a bit of dramatic licence thrown in. I love what I do but I only feel like I am just getting going and I never want to get above myself.” Colman also fiercely protects the privacy of her family – husband of 18 years Ed Sinclair and their three children – revealing that while her work is a vital part of her being, she would never accept a role that would greatly jeopardise their homelife. “I don’t like being away from my kids - it’s as simple as that. As long as I have Ed and the children, everything is all right.”

Organiser Sarah McAlister chats to Lifestyle about the popular festive event
T
he Traditional Christmas Market has been running for 9 years, it started as a small event in the courtyard of my craft shop Just So Crafty in Oroklini in 2012, having grown up in Manchester where they had lovely Christmas Markets, i found it to be a festive part of the island that I missed. It had an amazing turn out from the start, and each year it grew and grew with more stall holders wanting to take part, and 1000’s of visitors wanting to come and enjoy the festivities, and purchase their Christmas gifts and decorations. It has moved location several times, and this year it is moving again to a new location on Dhekelia Road called Pyla Beach Park, it is located just in front of the Havana Beach Bar, (next to the
old Beau Rivage hotel), and is halfway between the Forest location we have used the last 3 years and the Lordos Beach Hotel. Pyla Beach Park is an area of 10,000m2, but this year we will only be using 5000m2, so we will have the ability for it to grown much more in the future. It is a maze of pathways that will be lined with 100 different stalls selling a variety of brand new or handmade Christmas gifts and decorations, there will also be a range of delicious hot food and drink stalls. (German Bratwurst sausages, roast Turkey & Pork sandwiches, Homemade Soups, Mexican, Indian and Pizza, included in these are vegan options also, plus hot chocolate, tea, coffee, mulled wine and prosecco). Normally we have 150 stalls, but due to the
Coronavirus pandemic and the current government restrictions that we will follow we have reduced everything down this year. Our priority is to keep all our stall holders and visitors safe, whilst also helping the small businesses and artists that participate, and the visitors that need a bit of Christmas Cheer more than normal. ALL restrictions will be strictly adhered to, unfortunately this means we will only be allowed to let 250 people in at any one time, but by extending our hours everybody that wants to come should be able to safely. Also this year unfortunatley Father Christmas and his elves in the Grotto will not be able to join us, he is self isolating due to his age, and so he can keep safe for his work on Christmas Eve. The market itself will be lit up after 5pm in the evening and festive music will play in the background throughout, and there will be plenty of tables and chairs for visitors to sit and enjoy their mulled wine and bratwurst sausages safely.

JONATHAN ANTOINE
ANNOUNCES HIS FIRST EVER CHRISTMAS ALBUM
CHRISTMASLAND Tell us about your experience with bullying I’ve more or less been fat my entire life, which I’m sure you can imagine the implications of. Kids can be cruel, but that cruelty is borne of an inevitable narrowness of worldview. It is not a thing that anyone should be resented for, for narrowness of view is akin to a virus; hatred will never eradicate a virus, but careful education and

caring for one another undoubtedly will. How do you help young people with their mental health? I try my best to treat each person as an individual. There is no single thing that any person can say or do that will cure all ails, and anyone who claims they have that ability is probably not to be trusted. One of the most important things I’ve learned recently is that we must accept the narratives of others
as though they were our own. It is easy to see the contradictions in the perceptions of a severely depressed person, and challenging to accept those contradictions as their honest truth. If we are able to accept that truth is in itself variable, then we can move towards changing it. Is this reflected in your music? I’d like to think so. In each song and across each album I try to tell many stories, often nested within one another and occasionally contradictory. The idea that the individual has the most power over their universe is something I’ve generally tried to stress in my music and my words. What plans do you have for Christmas? I’m releasing my second album this year, a Christmas album filled with classics of all different kinds, called ChristmasLand. I hope that it can provide some relief at this bizarre crossroads we’ve all found ourselves at. Other than that, I’ll be thankful to be spending Christmas day with my family. ‘HEY MUSIC…THANKS FOR THE THERAPY!’
DECEMBER IS HERE, A TIME OF WARM FEELINGS, FAMILY, FRIENDS, JOY AND MUSIC!
My first mention is a young musician from Larnaca. Giannis Giannikou, aka MoulD, who studied music at BIMM Manchester and returned to Cyprus with his new project and released 2 songs, the most recent titled THEM. His music is a collaboration of Greek underground Rembetiko style fused with modern Rock and Grunge tones. An interesting refreshing combination with effective results which has been well received. I look forward to seeing MoulD perform in the future. Follow MoulD to hear his input into the local music 36 scene.
Moving across to Australia now to a dynamic pair, OPAL OCEAN. An instrumental guitar duo who have ventured to great acoustic heights to produce an amazing and unique fresh sound of flamenco technique and progressive Rock. Their second album The Hadal Zone, was released in October and is as magical to listen to, as it is to watch Alex and Nadav

strum away passionately and vigorously on their guitars. I happily and thankfully came across this duo, who have performed in beautiful locations (pre Covid). Make sure to check out their music, their CD will make an amazing Christmas present.
ANDREA BOCELLI
December seems to be the month for live streaming events. I will be ‘attending’ three with friends or, I might even have a ‘house party’. This ‘Covid era’ is certainly surreal but I am positive that REAL LIVE events will be back! Until then, my first, will be the fabulous EVANESCENCE, who recently announced their first Live stream concert on the 5th December, playing songs from their upcoming album and other favourites…Amy Lee will be ‘bringing me back to life’ that night! evanescencelive.co
spectacular Teatro Regio Di Parma Opera House in Italy. A magical show for this magical time of the year. andreabocelli.lnk. to/tickets.
Secondly, on the 12th December, the enchanting Andrea Bocelli will perform a one day only worldwide exclusive stream, BELIEVE IN CHRISTMAS, from the
Ending on a positive note with a beautiful song, Tom McGraw’s Humble & Kind.
And finally, a childhood favourite of mine, New Wave pop group Boy George & Culture Club, will be presenting their Rainbow In The Dark live stream concert on the 19th December at Wembley SSE Arena. A night of optimism, colour, chameleons and hope in these times! Ticketmaster. co.uk SAVE THE DATES!
Merry Christmas everyone xx

“Our restaurant, our life’’
Our dream was to one day create good service for tourists that would make their holidays here in Cyprus, even more special. This dream came true in 1989, where we established a small family business in Ayia Napa, a restaurant, as I (Theo) am a trained chef and my brother (Peter) is a trained waiter. Since then we have tried our best to provide as much satisfaction as possible to our customers.
There’s a reason why Flames Restaurant is listed as one of Trip Avisor’s top ten restaurants in Ayia Napa. Dedicated to providing an excellent service, its winning mix of friendly staff, a great atmosphere and delicious food has delighted diners since it was established 1989. If traditional Cypriot dishes are what your after, Flames is the place to go. You’ll find House Specialities, Steak, Grills, Fish, Pasta Vegan and Vegetarian Dishes on the Menu. Not to mention its fabulous Wine list and homemade desserts - all chosen to complement your meal perfectly.
