Hello July The best month of the year as the summer holidays get underway and my children fly over for their summer break. It’s the perfect time of year for you to kick back your flip flops, sip your cooled frappe and breathe in the air at one of our beautiful 112 beautiful beaches around the island. How blessed are we! The clubs and restaurants are full, it’s so good to see everyone thriving and enjoying themselves. If you’ve been following me on instagram or Facebook, you’ll know that I’ve been dedicated to my fitness programme under the careful supervision of James Luckman, aka Papa Luckman Fitness and I am excited to announce that he’s joining the magazine as a columnist. He’s not just a personal trainer, he’s a holistic lifestyle coach to ensure you get the most out of living a healthy lifestyle. And we’re running our first

fitness bootcamp in Ayia Napa in September which promises to test your endurance and challenge you. I can’t wait! Please follow him @papaluckmanfitnessgroup So what’ else is happening this month? The Girlfriends Circle has a full diary of events, so keep your eyes peeled for notifications on our page, If you’re not already following us on instagram please @lifestylemagcyprus After two years of delays I’m also planning my couture fashion show in Ayia Napa in November so starting to organise that with the help of The Brand Shop. Expect some incredible independence designer labels showcasing and there’s still time to get involved so contact me. The magazine is going from strength to strength, celebrating two years of publishing and I am looking to recruit a dedicated sales person with experience in advertising sales to help

us expand. Print media is still the most trusted form of advertising and also the most memorable, people still love to pick up a copy of the magazine and read it in their hands, that’s way all our magazines are picked up every month. For now though, it’s time to kick back and sink my toes into the hot sand and go for a swim. We really do have the best lifestyle, don’t we? Stay stylish,

RECIPE

CLASSIC STRAWBERRY ETON SUNDAE Method:

Ingredients:

Ice cream: 150g caster sugar 450g strawberries quartered 350ml/12fl oz whole milk 150ml whipping cream 30g glucose syrup 50g skimmed milk powder Meringue: 3 free-range egg whites ½ tsp fresh lemon juice 100g caster sugar 50g icing sugar sifted Garnish: 200g raspberries 1 tbsp icing sugar 450ml double cream whipped to soft peaks

1. To make the ice cream, put the strawberries into a bowl with the sugar and stir until the sugar begins to dissolve. Cover and leave to stand at room temperature for an hour, stirring occasionally so the strawberries break down and bleed their juices. 2. Meanwhile, pour the milk, cream and glucose syrup into a saucepan and heat gently until steaming. Gradually whisk in the milk powder, then remove from the heat and leave to cool to room temperature. 3. Pour the milk mixture into a blender, add the strawberries and the juices from the bowl and blend until smooth. Transfer to a seal able container and freeze for 2 hours stirring the mix every 15 minutes until it’s thick. 4. To make the meringue, preheat the oven to 120C/100C Fan/Gas ½ and line a baking sheet with baking paper.

6

5. Put the egg whites into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment and add the lemon juice. Whisk to soft

peaks, then gradually add the caster sugar. Once all of the sugar has been added, continue to beat for 2 minutes until stiff and glossy. Fold in the icing sugar. 6. Using a spatula, spread the meringue mixture over the lined baking sheet in a thin, even layer and bake for 2 hours until crisp. Allow to cool completely. Peel the paper away from the meringue sheet and break into shards. 7. Meanwhile, toss the raspberries with the icing sugar and set aside for 20 minutes. 8. To serve, layer the ice cream, raspberries and softly whipped cream in a sundae glass and decorate with the meringue shards. Can also add marshmallows and chocolate sprinkles.

Y FANTASY BOAT PART

Lifestyle chats to marketeer and entertainer Stephen Bastien

If you’re heading to Ayia Napa this summer then you can’t miss a trip on the Fantasy Boat Party where you’ll meet the man himself, aka Constable Cruise. How long have you been coming to Ayia Napa? Twenty one years, I came for seven months of the year for the summer season. I came in March to set things up, the cruise starts the first weekend in April and the last one is the end of October. Sometimes I go back to West London where I am from but I spend the winter travelling to warm and exotic places. I have been travelling for the last 10 years.

How did you get into being Constable Cruise? It was my boss who tried to sell me a ticket for the boat, I said no, I wasn't interested and then he invited me on the boat to have a sample, and then I thought, this is quality. I went home and pestered me throughout the winter to have a job and said I would be an asset to him and he came up with this role as a corrupt Caribbean policeman because of my comical background. Because I used to do stand up everywhere and my people skills, this would be ideal for the boat because using comedian talent and people skills to allow people to have a laugh and it went down a storm because it’s so silly. A back man on a boat in the middle of the Mediterranean arresting

people for not partying hard enough, you don’t expect to see anything like it. What are the highlights of the role? I have grown into the role more as I try and get a boy and girl together and it does work as I gave had 5 wedding from that! I handcuff them together, I have been to every wedding, I have created boyfriend and girlfriend relationships, shag buddies and friends from the handcuffs. Been to 5 weddings and now I know people from all over the world who come back and see me every year. Is there a target audience for the boat

party? Age is irrelevant, they come on the boat, 50 and 200 people come back every year just to come back on the boat, I have friends from far flung places, the Middle East, Austraia, Scandinavia, some have become really good friends. How did the pandemic affect? We were getting customers we dont normally get ie eastern europe and we couldn’t do as many trips and we lost the british, we suffered badly because the brits spend money and know ow to party, the duets year we do 11 cruises and normally we do around 150 and in 2021 we did 41 cruises, since that’s finished, we’re doing around 160 cruises this summer and most of the people are English which is what we want and need. Do you still do stand up? No, I did it for 6 years but I wasn’t that good to make a living, was never going to pay my rent but I like making people laugh, but to enough to make

a full time living. I used to go to the comedy clubs, I had an agent, observational comedy that was going on in the world and factual comedy, I could have stuck at it but didn’t have the time or patience, never wrote a script, alway ad lib and that is a transferable skill that I use now, with the boat I use people to get them involved without embarrassing them, when I hand cuff them I give a silly reason but they feel involved and they get punished with a drink and that’s a good thing. We have had loads of famous people, actors, actresses, singers, footballers, it attracts all sorts, they don’t get special treatment, bookstore and Geordie sure, Ashley Cole, Kelly Le Rock, loads of famous people. What’s your favourite month? Every month is different, very age my favourite month is August and September because it is older crowds and friends come then. I don't form a bond with the kids, but later summer I find I have more space to talk, the boat parties aren’t so hectic and we go out for a meal afterwards, lots are self employed and they’re not in school or uni and we have a lot in common.

What makes you special? I am unique, no more, no less, you‘ll never find another Stevie B anywhere in the world. What’s so special about fantasy boat party? It is all ages, all colour, creed denominations, it suits an international crows irrespective of age, religion and everyone is the same end everyone has a happy, it’s not a British or a young crown it’s for everyone and anywhere and that’s why it is so good, people all want to have. Mums and dads, sons, disabled everyone, that wouldn’t normally go on them and approach, 70 year old birthday party, a blind group, deaf group, host/DJ is Marshall from Christopher Marshall How do people book? They can add me to instagram or Facebook and message me or call me on 07522 063381.

A few years back

A few years back, a New York Times ar4cle pleaded that the treatment of hearing loss needs “to be taken much more seriously.” Much of the ar4cle’s basis for that plea were the numerous mental and physical health consequences of leCng hearing loss go untreated, including increased odds of depression, falling, emergency room visits and, of course, demen4a. LIFESTYLE

NOTES AND REFLECTIONS OF A WOMAN CREATING HER BEST LIFE Stefania Bongiovanni Hi gorgeous, do you like when someone says they will meet you for a coffee tomorrow and then at the last minute they say they have to postpone or that something came up and they really cannot make it? I’m not referring to the unexpected inconvenience or binding commitment (family matters, work obligations, etc.) that lead them - despite their will to miss an appointment. I’m talking about the serial fakes, those who always find something else better to do or who just wake up in the morning and decide that they don’t feel like meeting you for a coffee... Annoying, isn’t it? Well, apart from the obvious advice to let those people walk out of your life, the point here is another. This example gives me the pretext to shift the focus on you and allow you to see things from the perspective of self-development. Choose to be the one who always sets intentions and turns them into reality. Choose to be the one who starts a daily workout routine

and does it. Choose to be the one who hits on “going” to the events on Facebook and shows up. Choose to be the one who respects nature and gives a good example. Focus your attention and your energy on fewer things and carry them out. Choose quality over quantity and be truthful to yourself. Keep your word. This is not just an act of kindness and respect towards the other people involved, it is also a demonstration to yourself that you know what you want and you have the determination to make it become a reality. Your actions, for good and for bad, say a lot about you. By declaring something and not sticking to it, you are basically telling the world and to your subconscious mind that you are not reliable. If you cry wolf... Well, you know the story... Prove them wrong, instead! Show to the world that you have a clear head and that you do what you say! Take action and then let the results speak for you.

Because otherwise the next time you state or declare something, and you don’t accomplish it, after the tenth time people will think you are just talking nonsense. Because otherwise the next time you will do your affirmations, your subconscious mind won’t believe you ;-) and we want to manifest our best life, don’t we? (maybe next time let’s talk about affirmations, shall we?...) So now, gorgeous, just go out there and start living your best life!

Who am I? I’m an Italian living in Cyprus and loving it crazily. My name is Stefania Bongiovanni, some of you will know me as the founder of The Girlfriends’ Circle, but as well as the woman who believes in #sisterhood and in #womensupportwomen.

BUSINESS

WHY EVERYONE NEEDS TO ADVERTISE

S

o many times when I approach businesses to help them grow, I get the response that they’re either too busy so “don’t need to advertise” or too quiet and will advertise when things pick up. If you’re busy you can’t be complacent and expect your customers to come back, you have to give them a reason to return. What if there’s a slump in the economy? Advertising brings you loyalty. And if you’re quiet then you need to advertise to ensure you’re the first choice for customers to come to. This is the thing about business. Consistent advertising ensures greater business success. End of. If it didn’t work you wouldn’t see repetition of adverts on the TV, radio and of course in magazines and newspapers. Think advertising doesn’t work ? Tell that to McDonalds, Coca Cola and the endless brands that are etched in your mind as ones to choose.

18

Need new trainers? You’re bound to choose a brand like Under Armour or Nike or Adidas rather than an unbranded one. Why? Because advertising has persuaded you that these are the brands to trust for quality and delivering what they’re supposed to. One-off adverts don’t work, people need reminding. Advertising gives your business brand loyalty and promotes a positive image, giving you greater exposure for you to target your customers. You may have a restaurant that isn’t busy. But you need to advertise regardless, for when your potential customer is looking for somewhere to go out for dinner, you’ll be the first choice they remember. Advertising makes sure that the consumer knows that when they are in need, your business will be there to help them. A continuous amount of

consumers visiting your business is the first step to increase your sales. The more consumers you have, the more business you will have. Advertising creates business now and in the future. And advertising encourages repeat business, for once you have got your customers, they’re bound to come back if you’re providing a great service and product. Ultimately, advertising makes your company money – It works. Advertising attracts customers to your business and increases your sales. When consumers see strong and positive advertisements they are more willing to buy and ready to choose your business. Invest in advertising for your business and you will watch it grow and succeed. Advertising is about creating the desire for your customers. Which is why people love Lifestyle! Talk to me about a bespoke advertising package to help grow your business. I can make you famous. FITNESS What is the Papa Luckman Ethos

T

here are a lot of good personal trainers out there posting great content and exercise videos, so much so you can get lost in what you should do and what you are capable of achieving. Papa’s ethos is to keep it simple if you are starting out or refreshing your focus on getting more active. If you are already someone who regularly exercise then it is all about keeping your routine fresh and changing it up regularly. Don’t get me wrong, being active is hard work, it hurts and it is easy to get into your comfort zone. Being active, exercising regularly and correctly is like a jigsaw puzzle. The 4 straight edges are is your mind set (desire, motivated, passionate, focused). The equal shaped pieces are like you body (good food, water, sleep, rest). The more intricate pieces that all look the same is your soul (challenge yourself to be the best and overcome your limitations)……if you don’t have all the pieces then your will not make the active picture you have in your mind. It is important set your activity goals that are achievable, accessible and fit into your daily routine. Exercise is very personable; you have to choose the

activates that are good for you. Work life balance is so important but in reality our motivation is driven by how we feel each day, stress at work/home, lack of sleep, what we eat, the weather and being tempted by the quick fix. It is how we manage and negotiate these distractions that is the key. Reality check here, I would suggest it takes 2-3 months before you see true results and you have to make being active a lifestyle change that becomes part of your daily routine, just like having a cup of tea. If you have already nailed exercise and it is part of your daily routine then you need to focus your training on what you are really trying to achieve. You cannot train for multi disciplines if you want to improve your performance. For example, you want to improve your running pace but also want to improve your performance in football, rugby, netball etc Exercise at your own Pace (in any space) and within your own ability – it is about you, how you feel and not what anyone else is doing Mental Strength – There is no such word as ‘can’t’ . When you hit the wall you will get over it. Work hard, Eat hard – Whatever you eat needs

to be burnt off through physical movement. It is all about moderation. It is not rocket science, if you know it is wrong don’t do it. If you do, be prepared to work that body. Your diet should be balanced with all the good stuff to fuel your body for exercise. Hydration is key, drink plenty of water through the day Getting Results – It is all about how you feel and look, you will know it when you see it. Listen to your heart, your heart will tell you if you are training right, it will never lie You must want it – say no more…………… I am holding my first fitness bootcamp in Cyprus in September, I’d love you to join me but it’s not for beginners. I will challenge you Follow me on Instagram and Facebook @papaluckmanfitnessgroup

MONEY

C

ypriot consumers seem to be embracing the fledgling cashback service where a customer pays by debit card and asks for a further amount to be charged – up to a maximum of €100. The added amount then is handed over in cash and no fee is charged. The trend is becoming more and more popular particularly in bakeries, kiosks, petrol stations

and supermarkets all across Cyprus, Philenews reported on Friday. Card service provider JCC data shows that about 15,000 cashback transactions took place in many of the island’s stores at a total value of €900,000 between January 1 and end of May. The service has been in place for many years in the US, UK and other countries and allows consumers to save time by not having to make a trip to an ATM.

Regarding the total number of stores providing the service through JCC terminals, data up to Wednesday, June 22, has it standing at 215. And stores by district are situated as follows: Nicosia 58, Limassol 69, Larnaca 37, Famagusta 14, Paphos 37. The main categories of stores that have opted for this service through the JCC provider are gas stations, supermarkets, kiosks and bakeries.
