City housing giving back to the landscape

This project is a mixed income multi-family housing development in the Roxbury neighborhood south of Boston. The goal was for the housing project to provide amenities back to the public and be constructed with mass timber. The idea for my design was to create a landscaping effect that be the primary amenity for the residents and greater community.

The goal of this studio was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how to design and build with mass timber as the main structural material. The studio was able to tour buildings and factories that used and manufactured mass timber, and also collaborated with building science students to create a carbon analysis and connection details for our design.

The main concepts for this building all stemmed from the idea to expand the existing green-way and have it wrap around the building, ending at a point for gathering. The massing for the project became a curved bar to emphasize the green-way, while the ground floor became more permeable to allow people and landscaping to flow between both sides of the building and neighborhood.

The Details

These more detailed plan and section drawings show how the structural mass timber elements come together with the insulation, mechanical systems, and finishing materials.

The unit plan also follows the strategy of the occupied living spaces being located closer to the edge of the building where there is more natural light and areas with access to plumbing are located towards the hallway. This strategy is used for all the units in the building.

Section A

The Exterior

The facade of the building is horizontally oriented on the curved part of the building and vertically oriented on the taller part of the building. It pulls up at the cafe corner of the building to open up the second floor of the cafe to views of the park and city. The amphitheater provides a space for sitting and its center is also the center of the curve of the building (see diagrams on pg. 6).

A home that supports expansion

Rosie’s Home is a multi-phase project where each semester a new group of 3rd year students will continue the work of previous semesters. I was part of the 3rd phase of this project. Previous students had designed the floor plan, installed the pole barn and poured the concrete slab. My semester with the project had 10 other students and our focus was to design the section of the home and come up with strategies for the enclosure and exterior materials.

We worked with our clients Rosie and Frankie to design a home that would best suit their current needs of an accessible home as well as designing for any expansions that might be added to the home in the future.

Pole Barnes are a vernacular structure used to store agricultural products and machinery. They are used because they are inexpensive and quick to install.

Rural Studio is exploring the use of these structures in rural housing to solve common problems that arise when people expand their homes. Additions made to homes like those in Newbern tend to be improperly built and will have leaks or other problems in a few years. Designing for this expansion to occur under one big roof would prevent some of these common complications.

Rosie’s Home will be the third pole barn project build by Rural Studio and is an exploration of how to embed the pole barn columns into the wall of the home.

Framing Team

As a part of the framing team I drew framing plans and details for the CD set. The team also met with a structural engineer to discuss details, specifically about the pitched roof.

Exploring in the trees

My goal for this competition project was to create a building that served as a gateway to the forest. Classrooms are clustered along a trail leading deeper into the preserve and open up to views of Alabama’s beautiful native landscape.

The vertically oriented facade which wraps around the building draws from the vertical nature of the pine trees in the surrounding forest. The building skin also slides out or cuts back to create openings for views and entrances which was inspired by a surface study model made at the beginning of the project.

An introverted public space

The motivation for this project was to create a different kind of public space for the city of Aarhus. Instead of using glass and open views to invite people into the space this public building provides a more private experience. The materials, lighting, details, and the public plaza were all influenced by buildings I visited, sketched, and photographed during the trip. The chapels especially inspired the question of how to create a building that is open to everyone yet provides and intimate atmosphere.
