he Kneeling Soldier bronze statue made its way down Highway 19 to its final resting home at the Van Zandt County Veterans

Memorial. The bronzed statue made its way to Canton Nov. 1, and will take a knee permanently after a Memorial Dedication to be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the VZC Veterans Memorial. The bronze statue has been a work in progress, with artist and sculptor Ed Pickett taking the lead on the project. Pickett began his sculpture with an eight foot Styrofoam and clay sculpture tucked in the corner of the front room of the Savannah Winery and Bistro in Canton. The eight-foot, double body size rendition of Canton solider Juan Herrera is lifelike and precise to the point, to further bring out details in the final bronzing process. Herrera is a United States Army Specialist who served in Iraq and volunteered to serve as the model for the sculpture. Herrera was

photographed kneeling, as if paying homage to fellow fallen soldiers. After Pickett’s part was done with sculpting, the sculpture headed to the Grapevine Foundry for the bronzing process. “Many programs and numerous fundraisers have taken place to help bring this soldier home,” said Vets Memorial PR Chair Diane Farmer. “All of the donations and fundraisers have helped make this project become a reality.” Those who wish to attend are asked to bring their own chairs for a place to sit. First Responders Banquet Approximately 100 tables will be set on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Canton Civic Center for a First Responders banquet. About 500 First Responders will be there along with Van Zandt County citizens and many local and state representatives. All First Responders, retired First Responders, and First Responders who live in Van Zandt County (but work elsewhere), will receive free tickets. Each First Responder will See SOLDIER, 12A
