DEAR FRIEND, As I reflect on the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s 2015–2016 Season, I am proud of all we have accomplished this year to achieve our mission to create, preserve and promote classic theatre for all audiences. This season we staged two world-premiere adaptations, received more Helen Hayes Award nominations than any other theatre, broke ticket sale records, collaborated with major theatres from the U.S. and from England and began our New Directors series. I am so thankful for each of these successes and for the support of our audiences and donors—like you. As one of the District’s most engaged audiences, you have repeatedly inspired us to stage more inventive, ambitious and challenging work with every season and for that I am tremendously grateful.

We began our season with the 25th Anniversary of the Free For All, the beloved Washington tradition I launched in 1991 to ensure full access to classical theatre for the people of Washington.

Over 11,500 people from across the region joined us for 16 free performances of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Ethan McSweeny. In this Shakespeare classic, mismatched lovers Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius and Helena encounter a supernatural squabble that alters their destinies forever. In addition to the ancillary access programs we offer each year with the Free For All—Ward Nights and Citizens for Shakespeare— this summer we provided a full day Free For All Festival including a props “petting zoo,” backstage tours, a costume dress up station and various show inspired crafts and activities. To mark this exciting anniversary, we also further expanded the Free For All to include four performances of A Mini-Summer Night’s Dream for children as young as five.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company mainstage season opened with Yaël Farber’s adaptation of Salomé.

Directed by Farber, this world premiere infused music, movement and ancient religious texts with Oscar Wilde’s landmark play and marked STC’s fifth ReDiscovery Commission since 2010. Salomé was nominated for ten Helen Hayes Awards, more than any other one production this award cycle, and won seven— including Outstanding Play. STC offered Salomé as a part of the 2015 Women’s Voices Theater Festival—the largest collaboration of theatre companies working simultaneously to produce original works by female writers in history.

During the holidays, Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul continued to show his deft ability for directing musical comedy with Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate.

In this classic 1940s musical, two couples attempt to stage a musical production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew while hiding their dysfunctional relationships backstage. The Washington Post wrote “Kiss Me, Kate is vintage Broadway-style entertainment… and Paul continues to show that he knows how to snap together such a massive puzzle.”

Kiss Me, Kate exceeded records set by Paul’s 2015 production of Man of La Mancha and is now the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s bestselling show of all time. The production was also nominated for five Helen Hayes Awards and received three—including the award for Outstanding Choreography.

Next, I staged a double bill of one-act comedies about bad theatre, bad playwrights and bad critics: The Critic & The Real Inspector Hound. The double bill featured Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Critic—our sixth ReDiscovery Commission—paired with Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound. The production was co-produced with Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater, where it enjoyed a continued life after closing in the District. Metro Weekly declared the double bill “an evening of giggles and frolics that serves as a reminder that clever wit is always timeless.”

We next staged director Ron Daniels’s Othello. In one of Shakespeare’s major tragedies, the title character finds himself a pawn in the manipulative games of his jealous friend Iago who poisons Othello’s thoughts—ultimately leading to the murder of his wife. Daniels cast Faran

Tahir (Iron Man, Star Trek) as Othello to counter Jonno Roberts (Person of Interest) as Iago. The Washington Post commended the pairing: “Jonno Roberts’s coldly efficient Iago—a Shakespearean psychopath if there ever was one—stokes the doubts of Faran Tahir’s Othello in such an ingeniously insidious way that the embers of Othello’s paranoia about Desdemona’s fidelity suddenly erupt into an inferno. ” After STC’s successful 2014–2015 mainstage season presentation of the National Theatre of Scotland’s Dunsinane, the Company again offered a missionaligned presentation during the 2015–2016 Season with Headlong theatre company’s 1984. Adapted and created by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan from George Orwell’s 1949 novel, 1984 vividly depicted Orwell’s chilling vision of a dystopian future through a multimedia production. BroadwayWorld called the piece “inventive and immediate...the timeless design choices, along with the innovative use of technology, ensure 1984 is of the moment.” 1984’s confrontational subject matter and bold staging sold out all 31 performances. The production opened on Broadway in June of 2017 for a limited engagement.

The mainstage season concluded with Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. In this notorious comedy, a wealthy merchant seeks husbands for his two daughters, the affable Bianca and her older, strongwilled sister Kate—played by Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock, Weeds). Kate is ultimately wed to a man who declares he’ll “tame” her shrewish ways—shocking her family and friends when he succeeds. The production

was directed by Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, the first artist in the Company’s three-year partnership with the Clarice Smith Series: New Directors for the Classics, which provides opportunities for mid-career contemporary directors to stage their first Shakespeare play at STC. Iskandar used an all-male cast and chose to incorporate music by Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) into his immersive and highly innovative production.

DC Theatre Scene called the work “an extraordinary production, one of the most original and well thought out presentations of Shakespeare I’ve seen in years.”

This season we also impacted thousands of adults and children through more than two dozen arts education, engagement and access programs. For adults, we provided podcasts, acting classes and the Creative Conversations discussion series. For children, we collaborated with 124 Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. schools to integrate theatre arts education into local classrooms through programs including Text Alive!, SHAKESPEARIENCE and District Shakespeare. STC’s in-school programs alone reached nearly 15,000 students throughout the academic year! I’m also proud to report that we continued our FREE WILL program this season. Inspired by the Free For All, FREE WILL provided free access to our mainstage productions for 4,800 patrons throughout the year.

This season would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our Board of Trustees, donors and patrons. Together, we have raised the bar yet again.

To open the 2015–2016 Season, STC remounted one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for one of the capital’s most beloved annual traditions, the Free For All. The two weeks of performances marked a major milestone for STC—the Free For All’s 25th anniversary.

Love, magic and wonder filled the air in Ethan McSweeny’s stunning “ghost light” production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set in the ruins of an abandoned theatre. Hailed for providing “a guarantee of giddy-ever-after” (The Washington Post), “a feast for the senses” (DC Theatre Scene) and “a thoughtful...risky take on a familiar classic” (Washingtonian), the production created a fantastical, unforgettable realm where reality and the supernatural intersect as four mismatched lovers fled to the forest to find their destinies forever changed.

In the fall of 2015, the Shakespeare Theatre Company joined with over 50 theatres throughout the D.C. region to present the Women’s Voices Theater Festival, dedicated to featuring new work by female playwrights and highlighting the scope of plays being written by women. STC’s entry in the Festival, Salomé, was an adaptation by Yaël Farber, an internationally acclaimed adaptor/director.

In this new work, Farber retold the biblical story of Salomé and her encounter with John the Baptist from the perspective of Salomé herself, reworking Oscar Wilde’s play with ancient Arabic and Hebraic texts to create an urgently relevant exploration of the woman’s voice in history, oppressed people’s power over their own bodies, and the explosive connections between religious and political uprising. As Peter Marks of The Washington Post wrote, “Such is the staying power of these impressive 90 minutes that you’re compelled at the end to wonder why it never occurred to you to consider the flip-side possibilities for so many stories like this, Salomé was commissioned through a grant from the Beech Street Foundation and was sponsored by the Share Fund.

The visually stunning, nuanced and challenging production was counted a resounding success as the Company’s inaugural contribution to the Women’s Voices Theater Festival. “The bold artistry on display not only validates the festival’s mission but also shows the topical capabilities of a classical company taking risks as it engages with a world-class theater artist” (The Washington Post). In 2017, Salomé had a second production at the National Theatre in London.

Continuing his great success with classic musicals, STC Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul helmed a stellar production of Kiss Me, Kate, American musical theatre’s greatest tribute to the Bard. As they try to stage a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, sparks fly on and off stage between Fred Graham (Douglas Sills), the show’s director and star, and Lilli Vanessi (Christine Sherrill), his leading lady—and ex-wife. Add to the mix passionate young lovers, ingénue Lois Lane (Robyn Hurder) and her gambler boyfriend Bill (Clyde Alves), plus a few musically inclined gangsters’ heavies, and the result is a sharp and witty night with some of Cole Porter’s most immortal tunes.

The extraordinary cast and artistic team earned the hearts of audiences and rave reviews. The Washington Post praised Michele Lynch’s Helen Hayes Awardwinning choreography, saying it “catapults the show up a level.” For their show-stopping dancing, Robyn Hurder and Clyde Alves earned Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor and Actress.

BroadwayWorld proclaimed that “[Porter] would have been proud with these performances.” Audiences seemed to agree that Kiss Me, Kate was “as close to perfection as you will ever find” (Georgetown Dish) and a “perfectly glorious production” (DC Metro Theatre Arts) and by the production’s conclusion, it became the highest grossing show in STC’s history.

“I mean it’s sort of a thriller, isn’t it?”

“I suppose so. Underneath.”

“Underneath?!? It’s a whodunit, man!”

Audiences experienced a madcap night of life in the theatre with two classic behind-the-scenes comedies, The Critic and The Real Inspector Hound. First, playwright and adaptor Jeffrey Hatcher (The Government Inspector) returned with a fresh take on Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s 18th-century romp The Critic, a whirlwind comedy about bad theatre, worse playwrights…and, worst of all, the critics. The meta-theatrical frenzy builds throughout from wacky antics and quick changes to an operatic burlesque as the company jumps from role to role.

The laughs continued with Tom Stoppard’s absurdist tour-de-farce The Real Inspector Hound, an ingenious playwithin-a-play in which two critics find themselves caught up as unsuspecting suspects while they watch a classic 1950s “whodunit” in the style of Agatha Christie. STC’s Artistic Director Michael Kahn assembled a talented cast to take on both shows and BroadwayWorld commended his choices, remarking that “cracker-jack casting results in a fun evening with star turns—and slapstick routines— galore.” In the end, Kahn gave his audiences an evening that was “gleefully entertaining” (The Washington Post) with “a sense of joyous unpredictability” (Washington City Paper), ultimately serving as a “reminder that a clever wit is always timeless” (Metro Weekly). The production was a co-production with the Guthrie Theater and went on to Minneapolis for a second run.

In early spring, internationally acclaimed director Ron Daniels joined STC to helm Othello, Shakespeare’s tale of jealousy, duplicity and destruction. Daniels previously served as the Associate Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theater and as Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Other Place Theatre, and is an honorary Associate Director at the RSC. Among the exotic airs and mysterious shadows of Cyprus, newly married and promoted Moorish general Othello finds himself the pawn in the manipulative games of his right-hand man, Iago. As his imagination is poisoned, Othello turns on his new bride Desdemona and his loyal lieutenant Cassio, and rapidly spirals from hero to murderer in one of Shakespeare’s most haunting tragedies.

Faran Tahir assumed the titular role with Jonno Roberts as his perfidious right-hand man, Iago. Roberts’ performance enthralled and was hailed as “absolutely mesmerizing” (DC Metro Theater Arts) and “ingeniously insidious” (The Washington Post). Reframing Othello as a Muslim general (a more traditional interpretation of “Moor”), the production explored the tragic story from a new perspective and was termed “an Othello for Our Times” by BroadwayWorld.

Continuing the practice of hosting international artists creating innovative work based on the classics, STC welcomed Headlong, an acclaimed U.K. theatre ensemble that reimagines important cultural texts, previously tackling new productions of Faustus, King Lear, Medea, and Romeo and Juliet. Headlong’s adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 proved to be a smash hit with D.C. audiences.

Called “a brilliant retelling” by the Guardian, Headlong’s production of 1984 explored surveillance, identity and the security state. Audiences appreciated the way Orwell’s 1949 novel depicting a totalitarian world—the definitive book of the 20th century—remains incredibly relevant to modern life, particularly in the political environment of Washington, D.C.

Spilling from the stage into the lobbies and the street, Director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar’s production presented a provocative new approach to The Taming of the Shrew and an utterly unique audience experience. Known for his epic and immersive works, Iskandar used an all-male cast to examine the fluidity of identity, the authenticity of performance and the economics of love in one of Shakespeare’s most notorious texts.

An emerging artist noted for his innovative interpretation of classic texts, Ed Sylvanus Iskandar joined STC as the first director in the Clarice Smith Series: New Directors for the Classics. Iskandar creates performances that creatively shift beyond the proscenium, reconnecting audience and artist and returning the theatre to its ancient role as the center of communal life. Audiences not only see the play but are invited to engage in the experience in meaningful ways. As part of this vision, during the run of The Taming of the Shrew Sidney Harman Hall hosted the Piazza d’Amore: a local artisan market, a series of workshops led by D.C. artists and performances surrounding the show itself.

The “visually and aurally opulent” (DC Metro Theater Arts) production was led by Maulik Pancholy as Kate in a performance that was “bitter, vulnerable, and never ventures into caricature” (BroadwayWorld).

DCist called The Taming of the Shrew “sincere and stunning” as well as “inclusive, frothy, and quite the party,” while others commended STC for investing in young directors and taking daring approaches to classic plays: “Shakespeare Theatre Company deserves our support for taking risks and continuing to experiment.

REDISCOVERY This season, in celebration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death on April 23, 1616, the ReDiscovery Series presented four plays by prominent 20th-century authors featuring contemporary perspectives on Shakespeare’s achievement. In keeping with the ReDiscovery Series’ mission to unearth rare and neglected works, each of these readings provided a glimpse at a rarely produced play, many of them regional, American or world premieres.

EDWARD BOND, Bingo Edward Bond’s landmark 1973 play—recently named one of the best plays of all time by Michael Billington of the Guardian and staged in 2012 at the Chichester Festival with Sir Patrick Stewart—is a portrait of an older, conscience-stricken Shakespeare.

TONI MORRISON, Desdemona Written by Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison in collaboration with internationally acclaimed director Peter Sellars and Malian musician Rokia Traoré, this 2012 kaleidoscopic work reflects lyrically on Shakespeare’s Othello, giving a voice back to Desdemona.

TOM STOPPARD, Dogg’s Hamlet & Cahoot’s Macbeth Wittgenstein meets Hamlet and Macbeth meets Soviet Prague in these two meta-Shakespearean one acts, written in 1978 to be performed together.

As Newsweek wrote of this work: “The incorrigibly playful Stoppard has never been more serious than in this most playful of his works. Like George Orwell, Stoppard knows that language and liberty are intertwined: when language is perverted, corrupted or forcibly repressed, so is liberty.”

LEE BLESSING, Fortinbras Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. So are Hamlet, Laertes, Claudius and Gertrude, and in fact everybody except for Fortinbras, Horatio and … Osric? In Lee Blessing’s ingenious “metaphysical farce” from 1991, the action picks up right where Shakespeare’s Hamlet leaves off, as the bewildered Norwegian prince ascends the Danish throne.

The ReDiscovery Series has been a staple of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s programming since the 1993–1994 Season. TICKET ACCESSIBILITY

One-third of Shakespeare Theatre Company's audience enjoys free, discounted or subsidized pricing.

The Shakespeare Theatre Company has been nationally recognized for its excellence in staging high-quality, innovative versions of famous classical plays; exposing audiences to lesser-known classic works and reintroducing them into the commonly produced classical canon; and striving to reach and connect new and unlikely audiences to classical theatre through numerous accessibility efforts. STC offered more than 40,000 free and subsidized tickets

through the Free For All, ReDiscovery staged readings, SHAKESPEARIENCE and District Shakespeare Student Matinees and FREE WILL. The Free For All attracts over 10,000 patrons annually— more than 680,000 since its creation in 1991.

Since 2003, the ReDiscovery staged readings have attracted approximately 1,000 patrons per year.

The free District Shakespeare education program allows every D.C. public and public charter high school student to experience the classics, not just on the page but also on the stage. Combined with SHAKESPEARIENCE, which provides reduced-price tickets to students in Maryland and Virginia, STC serves 9,000 students

annually with student matinee programs.

Under-35 initiatives including subscriptions and Young Prose Nights serve over 15,000 patrons annually.

In its second season, the FREE WILL program provided 4,846 tickets to those who do not, or feel they cannot afford to attend theatre. Additionally, through FREE WILL STC offered 100 tickets to community partners—primarily other nonprofit organizations— for each mainstage production. The majority of FREE WILL participants were introduced to STC through the program and have continued to attend.

STC’s Facebook friends and followers went behindthe-scenes of the #STCShrew interactive activities via Facebook Live. 1,200 individuals watched as Director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar and Immersive Designer Craig Baldwin toured through the “Piazza d’Amore” with the cast and crew.

Digital Writing: Drewmaturgy

In the inaugural post of STC’s newest blog series Drewmaturgy, Literary Manager and Dramaturg Drew Lichtenberg explained that being a dramaturg in a regional theatre requires one to read, write and talk about the theatre’s productions in equal measure.

Through this series, Drew looked at our works through a much more personal lens, sometimes departing from STC’s season altogether to provide insight into the theatrical world in general.

In March of 2016, STC launched a new website, upgrading the look and functionality of ShakespeareTheatre.org to meet the demands of today’s audiences. The new design represented the culmination of a dedicated effort by members of the STC marketing team and The Jake Group marketing/design firm. After extensive study into the existing website’s analytics, user behavior and page traffic, The Jake Group and STC staff put together a website experience that is significantly easier

to navigate, puts ticket sales front and center and makes all the content the Company creates for its productions and programs easier to explore.

The new ShakespeareTheatre.org landing page highlights the Company’s many programs and initiatives, providing direct access not only to tickets but also to Education, special events and important news.

“Watch & Listen” now offers a portal to explore STC’s extensive multimedia content, including ASIDES Online, videos, articles, podcasts and more.

Newly designed show pages also feature related programming and events, cast headshots and bios and quick links to related media. The updated ShakespeareTheatre.org helps the Shakespeare Theatre Company better serve its diverse population of visitors each year, including subscribers and patrons, donors, students and teachers and special event groups.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE Now in its seventh season, National Theatre Live brought screenings of world-class productions

from London directly to the Shakespeare Theatre Company. Each presentation was filmed live and

broadcast in HD to Sidney Harman Hall.

This season included encore screenings of NT Live favorites, as well as new productions from celebrated theatres across London. Returning this year were Julie Taymor’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Audience starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II and the smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors starring James Corden and based on The Servant of Two Masters

by Carlo Goldoni.

Among the new screenings from across the pond were celebrated productions of Shakespeare classics, including Benedict Cumberbatch in Hamlet, Tom Hiddleston in the Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus and the National Theatre production of As You Like It. Other broadcasts included an acclaimed re-imagining of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, first staged by Bristol Old Vic and later at the National Theatre by director Sally Cookson; the Donmar Warehouse production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses; and the Royal Court Theatre’s production of Hangmen by Martin McDonagh.

MACAO ARTS FESTIVAL Following the Free For All performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Ethan McSweeny, STC’s production traveled to Macao, China, to perform Shakespeare’s iconic comedy at the 27th annual celebration of the Macao Arts Festival (MAF), April 30 through May 29, 2016. In commemoration of the 400th anniversaries of William Shakespeare’s and famed Chinese playwright Tan Xianzu’s deaths, the MAF presented shows in tribute to these two virtuosos, including STC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. McSweeny’s production kicked off the festival with performances on April 30 and May 1, 2016.

“Ethan McSweeny’s Midsummer delighted D.C. audiences in our 2012–2013 Season and again at our annual Free For All; we are

eager to share this production—a love letter to Shakespeare, to the art form, and to the physical environment of theatre itself—with an international audience,” said STC Artistic

Director Michael Kahn in advance of the trip. STC shows have been invited to travel abroad in the past—with Love’s Labour’s Lost in 2006 at the RSC’s Complete Works Festival in Stratford-upon-Avon and The Oedipus Plays, which traveled to the prestigious 2003 Athens Festival in Greece. STC is very proud to continue this tradition of international exchange.

Through a diverse range of offerings that extend beyond the stage, STC encourages audience and community members to delve deeper into the arts and the conversations they inspire.

SEASON PROGRAMS & PROMOTIONS FREE FOR ALL: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM To celebrate 25 years of Free For All, STC threw a Free For All Anniversary Festival, opening our doors to thousands of Washingtonians who enjoyed a props petting zoo, a “dress like a fairy booth,” our famous “blood and guts” demonstration, interactive backstage tours, two performances of A Mini-Summer Night’s Dream and of course, two full houses of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

SALOMÉ The Women’s Voices Theater Festival and Yaël Farber’s Salomé inspired STC to encourage members of our community to share their voice. STC launched a yearlong storytelling podcast called "Stories Voiced" in which patrons, staff and artists shared a true story with our audiences. Story District, the D.C.based storytelling organization, offered classes and performances at Sidney Harman Hall to inspire new storytellers and stories were published on STC’s blog bi-weekly throughout the season.

In addition, to facilitate conversation around Farber’s intense and challenging play, STC staff hosted a postshow discussion after every evening performance, encouraging patrons to talk to fellow audience members and engage with the show’s themes on a deeper level. Approximately 1,300 patrons attended 22 postperformance talkbacks.

KISS ME, KATE Local musicians and the National Symphony Orchestra transported Sidney Harman Hall back to the Golden Age of Broadway during Cole Porter Jazz Nights at the Harman, all of which were free and open to the public.

STC also brushed up on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with a movie marathon featuring three adaptations of the Bard’s famous “problem play.”

Between showings of Mary Pickford, Elizabeth Taylor and Julia Stiles as the sharp-tongued Katherine Minola, patrons wrote sonnets, played trivia games and even performed karaoke.

THE CRITIC AND THE REAL INSPECTOR HOUND It began just like any other post-show discussion. A group of panelists—all mysteriously connected to one another—waited backstage. Then, suddenly, the lights went out. Someone screamed. And, when the curtains finally parted, the notorious (fictional) theatre critic Vic Thames had been murdered! Murder after the Matinee, STC’s first original murder mystery party, cast 60 of our patrons as detectives in a case

of whodunit, co-hosted by Labyrinth Game Shop and inspired by The Real Inspector Hound.

OTHELLO Sparked by Director Ron Daniels’s take on Shakespeare’s Othello, STC, together with the National Museums of Asian Art at the Smithsonian Institute and Muse District, hosted panels on the portrayal of Muslims in art and culture.

For example, Susannah Compton, the perfumer behind Florescent, a line of handcrafted fragrances made with pure botanical ingredients, taught a sold-out crowd to stop and smell the roses—and the vetiver and the jasmine—at her Botanical Perfume making workshop. With these workshops, an expanded Creative Conversations series, and tastings and demonstrations led by local restaurants, audiences at The Taming of the Shrew experienced a unique event at every performance throughout the show’s run. Special Creative Conversations included University of Maryland scholar Theodore B. Leinwand reading from his book, The Great William, and a discussion about Political Identity and Universality in Shakespeare featuring local artists Lise Bruneau, Annalisa Dias, Paul Reisman and The Taming of the Shrew director Ed Sylvanus Iskandar.

CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS

The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Creative Conversations create opportunities for audiences to build rich connections to the work on stage. The discussions approach each production from multiple perspectives, sharing insight from scholars, artists, cultural leaders and audience members. During the 2015–2016 Season, 2,810 patrons participated in Creative Conversations.

PAGE & STAGE Taking a closer look at how plays are brought from script to stage, these discussions approached the productions from two perspectives. Members of the production’s artistic team were paired with local scholars to examine the challenges and themes in each play.

Guest scholars included: Georgetown University Professor of English Andrew N. Rubin; The Critic adaptor-playwright Jeffrey Hatcher; the George Washington University Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance Jodi Kanter; the George Washington University Professor of English Ayanna Thompson; University of Maryland Associate Professor of English Kimberly Anne Coles; and Director/Playwright Yaël Farber.

TWITTER LUNCHES With #STClunch, the Creative Conversation series took to social media to provide context and conversation over the lunch hour. Led by Audience Enrichment Manager Hannah Hessel Ratner, participants learned more about the production, shared their own thoughts and connected with other theatregoers about the season’s productions.

BOOKENDS Bookends provided audiences with a complete enrichment experience, before they entered the theatre and after they saw the performance. Before the show, participants explored the themes and history of the play with STC’s Literary Manager Drew Lichtenberg and Audience Enrichment Manager Hannah Hessel Ratner.

After the performance, cast members joined the audience for a discussion, providing their own perspective.

REFLECTIONS Bringing together STC staff members and guest panelists from a variety of disciplines, Reflections encouraged audiences to share their opinions and debate their ideas about the productions. PROSECASTS Recorded and shared online for each production, these free podcasts dove into historical context, themes and creative process. ASL-INTERPRETED DISCUSSION Before each American Sign Language-interpreted performance, STC’s Audience Enrichment Manager Hannah Hessel Ratner shared interesting facts about the production with Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing audience members, assisted by an ASL Interpreter.

Patrons had the chance to ask questions and reflect on important themes and context for the performance.

ASIDESLIVE In the 2015–2016 Season, the Shakespeare Theatre Company presented three in-depth symposia. These stimulating seminars allowed over 250 patrons to examine and contextualize Salomé, Othello and 1984.

Each panel featured artists and prominent scholars of history and literature. Panel discussions included “The Perfect Villain” with Jonno Roberts (Iago), Soraya Nadia McDonald, senior culture writer at ESPN’s “The Undefeated” and Paul A. Cantor, professor of English at University of Virginia; “Ministry of Truth” with Joel Brenner, former Senior Council at the National Security Administration and Shane Harris, journalist and author; and “Female Heroes in Drama” featuring actress Nadine Malouf (Salomé), playwright Anna Ziegler (Photograph 51) and playwright/performer Heather Raffo (9 Parts of Desire). Moderated by Peter Marks, theatre critic at The Washington Post.

PUBLICATIONS To help foster a richer understanding of the season’s plays, the Shakespeare Theatre Company produced several publications for a variety of audiences.

The Free For All Play Guide gave students of all ages

The First Folio: Teacher and Student Resource Guide offered educators and students information

about the plays and the playwrights, including a plot synopsis, background information on the world and the characters of the play, activity ideas, lesson plans and questions for discussion to better prepare students to attend the performances. The First Folio was available to every audience member for download on STC’s website and distributed directly to every classroom teacher participating in STC School Programs.

Inspired by Michael Kahn’s commitment to training the next generation of theatre artists, STC built the Directors’ Studio, a free year-long residency program for early-career directors from the D.C.-Metro area. In its first year, the Directors’ Studio provided

Happenings Happy Hours bring local artists’ work

into conversation with the plays on STC’s stages.

A range of artists provided free performances to enchant, inspire and entertain audiences. During Salomé Story District, a storytelling organization, and singer Sara Curtain provided female-driven performances.

With Kiss Me, Kate singing Shakespeare on stage, Happenings showcased the musical theatre cabaret La-Ti-Do and the punk rock musical Titus X. The duo of The Critic and The Real Inspector Hound was an opportunity to see Happenstance Theatre and the improv group Press Play. Shakespeare’s Othello featured

pre-show performances from the Academy of Classical Acting and a screening of the silent German film of Othello with live musical accompaniment by Burnett Thompson. During the run of 1984, 826DC’s lowercase reading series revealed new writing from students and professionals and Gwydion Suilebhan’s one-man show Transmission explored how ideas spread. Happenings finished the season as part of the Padua Finishing School during the run of The Taming of the Shrew with an engaging cabaret from local performers and a reading from poet Jeremy Garcon’s newest book of prose.

DISTRICT SHAKESPEARE To Whom It May Concern, I teach at Mamie D. Lee School, a District of Columbia Public School that educates students with significant disabilities. The disabilities are inclusive of Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and Multiple Disabilities.

District Shakespeare is an arts access program designed to integrate annual attendance of a free Shakespeare Theatre Company student matinee into every Washington, D.C. Public and Public Charter High School classroom curricula. STC is

committed to offering access to classic theatre to 100% of DCPS and DCPCS high school students, providing an immersive opportunity for students to learn about Shakespeare and his works in school, as well as to see a play on our stage—all for free. This program introduces many students to live theatre for the first time. “It was my first time in a performance and I was amazed,” one Dunbar High School student wrote. Another student said, “As a first time attender, I found it really interesting and entertaining to watch. I’m sure most of my friends and family would like to watch, it would be their first time as well.”

In the 2015–2016 Season, STC successfully continued District Shakespeare Student Matinees in order to welcome a full grade from every DCPS and DCPCS high school, allowing 2,535 DCPS and DCPCS students to attend matinees of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Kiss Me, Kate, The Critic and The Real Inspector Hound, Othello and 1984. District Shakespeare participants expanded their participation in STC Education’s other programs, including Text Alive!, Artists in the Classroom residencies and Camp Shakespeare. After attending Othello, District Shakespeare students commented: “It was a good play and shows how even good people can be manipulated and turned bad.” Another said, “It shows what the want for power and deceit does to people around us and ourselves.” STC Education staff were very pleased when another student commented, “Seeing a Shakespeare play made it easier to understand.”

SHAKESPEARIENCE STUDENT MATINEE PROGRAM Every year, the SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinee Program gives teachers and students the chance to experience Shakespeare—off the page and live on stage. After bringing his students to see Othello, Andrew Pappas, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute teacher, wrote “As always, thank you for a wonderful experience! I just saw my Shakespeare class, and they had a lot to talk about! In fact, this was one of the best post-show discussions I ever had in class, and I have you and the whole crew at the Shakespeare Theatre to thank for it.

I am so happy that we have developed this relationship over the past few years, and I am excited to continue it long into the future!” Designed to allow greater access to classical theatre and the dramatic arts for educators and their students in D.C., Maryland and

Virginia, the program offers deeply subsidized, reducedprice tickets, preparatory materials and in-school workshops. In the 2015–2016 Season, STC offered 18 SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinees that enabled 6,664 students to attend A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Kiss Me Kate, The Critic and The Real Inspector Hound, Othello and 1984. Free, in-school performance workshops are provided to all participating schools. STC staff and Affiliated Teaching Artists taught 330 preand post-performance workshops to a total of 9,179 students this season. Students who attended these performances experienced a living, breathing encounter with Shakespeare and hopefully gained a thirst to attend theatre again.

TEXT ALIVE!

Through Text Alive!, students get to own Shakespeare. This powerful letter written by a parent from Northwest High School in Montgomery County, Maryland demonstrates the difference this program makes in the lives of our students.

“I wanted to compliment you on the great teacher and that you are able to inspire a 16-year-old boy to enjoy Shakespeare who normally is only interested in sports, history or science. Ben has made tons of connections with Othello to his personal life, politics etc. I think it’s great, he has never talked about his English class so much as he has this year. I cannot believe that you convinced him to take a part in this play. It is way outside of his normal comfort zone, and I am convinced he agreed to do it because of his great respect for you.”

With a curriculum focused on understanding Shakespeare through performance, Text Alive! students explored A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Othello in 10 workshops under the guidance of STC Affiliated Teaching Artists. They also attended a SHAKESPEARIENCE student matinee of their play. As a culminating project, the students designed, rehearsed and performed a Shakespearean scene onstage at the Lansburgh Theatre.

Teachers also participated in professional development workshops, which provided them with the tools necessary to successfully integrate the study of Shakespeare into ADDITIONAL SUPPORT D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts ExxonMobil Mark & Carol Hyman Fund

their classrooms. The program supported Common Core English and Theatre standards of learning in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Text Alive! worked with 25 classrooms over two semesters, reaching 20 teachers and 521 students. Priority was given to public schools in the District of Columbia and suburban schools with high economic disadvantage rates. During the 2015– 2016 school year, 63% of the 19 participating schools were underserved.

ARTISTS IN THE CLASSROOM

TEEN CRITIC

Artists in the Classroom continued to experience enormous growth this season, with residencies of all shapes and sizes bringing the Shakespeare Theatre Company into local schools. These programs were designed in cooperation with teachers, creating an

This season, 11 teens from schools across D.C., Virginia and Maryland were accepted into the Teen Critic program from a competitive pool of applicants.

The program gives young writers the chance to sharpen their eye and their writing. Designed for high school students interested in journalism, Teen Critic teaches

arts-integrated workshop series tailored to each classroom led by STC Affiliated Teaching Artists.

Residencies addressed Common Core standards for Language Arts and Theatre by exploring Shakespeare’s text through performance. Responding to a consistent request from local families, this year STC continued offering four Shakespeare for Home School classes.

These classes are semester-long and culminate with a student performance. The Education Department provided 12 Artist in the Classroom residencies reaching

students how to view theatrical productions with a critical eye and compose their own theatre reviews.

For each production, the Teen Critics were invited to see the show on Press Night alongside professional journalists. To hone their writing skills, the students participated in writing intensives and met with top theatre critics from across the D.C. area, including Chris Klemick (Washington City Paper), Nelson Pressley (The Washington Post) and Rebecca Ritzel (The Washington Post). The teens’ reviews were then shared in school newspapers and posted on STC’s ASIDES Online.

CAMP SHAKESPEARE

Camp Shakespeare continued to expand programming by adding more sessions for our youngest students and a new partnership with the Potomac School, making it the largest summer in Camp Shakespeare history. Over 325 students enjoyed a magical and intensive classical theatre experience. In each camp, young participants played, explored and deepened their understanding of Shakespeare through classes in acting, movement, stage combat and text analysis. Students also developed and performed a play on the Lansburgh Theatre and Sidney Harman Hall stages, where they showcased their knowledge and talent for family and friends. In Advanced Camp, participants had the chance to rehearse and perform full Shakespeare plays, either Henry V or All ’s Well That Ends Well. After three weeks of rehearsal, campers mounted final performances in the Forum at Sidney Harman Hall, complete with full technical support. To ensure that all students, regardless of socioeconomic background, had a chance to be a part of Camp Shakespeare, STC provided more than $10,000 in scholarships, thanks to generous donations.

SCHOOL SHOWS

During the 2015–2016 Season, STC Education expanded its newest school program reaching 11 new schools and 3,419 students. STC Education’s in-school performances were created especially for elementary-school students, using the text and themes of Shakespeare plays. Each hour-long experience included a performance with six actors and an interactive experience for students. Based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream but designed for young audiences, A MiniSummer Night’s Dream transported students to the court of Athens and the world of Puck’s magical forest. The

Tiny Tempest introduced students to an enchanted island and the characters that inhabit it, including the young lovers Miranda and Ferdinand, the native creature Caliban and the comic duo Trinculo and Stephano.

“If students learn Shakespeare’s stories at a young age, then when they are ushered into the plays at an older age in school it won’t feel as archaic and intimidating.

Make-believe is a big part of what makes theatre wonderful. They engage in make-believe every day, why not meet them where they are?” said STC Director of Education Samantha Wyer Bello.

ARTISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Artists in the Community program offered

enrichment workshops to a wide range of groups

that were interested in engaging with Shakespeare Theatre Company. The workshops were customized to reach the goals set forth by each host organization, focusing on everything from acting skills to backstage tours. In 2015–2016, the Shakespeare Theatre Company taught workshops with local community organizations including THEARC and visiting student groups from as far away as South Africa. An active participant in local festivals, the Shakespeare Theatre Company also

provided workshops and classical performances to an additional 10,000 participants at events like the Barracks Row Festival and the British Embassy Open House.

PROFESSIONAL FELLOWSHIPS STC received over 500 fellowship applications representing more than 30 states, and over 90 colleges and universities. Just 17 early career artists and administrators were invited to join the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Fellowship program to live and work in the Nation’s capital. In full-time engagements spanning the course of ten months, fellows worked

alongside award-winning artists, technicians and

administrators to hone their skills in preparation for

launching their own careers in the performing arts.

Alumni from the 2015–2016 Fellowship program have gone on to pursue further study at institutions such as Columbia University and Harvard University while others have joined the staffs of organizations such as National Public Radio, Theatre Development Fund and the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

COLLEGE APPRENTICES In the 2015–2016 Season, STC Education launched a new program to engage the next generation of theater artists and arts administrators from D.C.-area colleges and universities. Season 2015–2016 College Apprentices came to STC from The George Washington University, Montgomery College, The Catholic University of America, George Mason University and American University. Apprentices volunteered for a full season

and participated in long-term projects and special events as a part of STC’s staff. Assigned to tracks within their department of interest, Apprentices experienced, observed and assisted with everyday operations.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT With dynamic curricula offering a unique approach, STC’s Professional Development workshops apply the

principles of acting to all business communication, building physical, vocal and text analysis skills for

participants. Along with a sample exercise presented to the STC Board of Trustees in 2015–2016, the Shakespeare Theatre Company provided workshops to organizations including Commercial Real Estate Women, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, Unispace, Synergi and the International Food Information Council & Foundation.

MASTER ACTING CLASSES The Shakespeare Theatre Company continued to offer a wide variety of classes taught by working professional actors, scheduling more than 55 classes in the 2015– 2016 Season. This season’s teaching artists included STC Affiliated Artists Naomi Jacobson and Gregory Wooddell, as well as STC actor Gregory Linington and local D.C. professionals such as Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Joy Jones, Thomas Keegan and Michael Dove.

For the first time, STC offered classes in our costume shop with our professional artisans and continued nonperformance classes such as Playwriting and Directing.

Scholarships for Adult Master Classes made possible by the Lorraine S. Dreyfuss Theatre Education Fund.

Classes were also connected with our stage productions, including acting workshops with Othello’s Jonno Roberts and Elan Zafir, and a musical theatre workshop with Kiss Me, Kate’s Monette McKay. Classes allowed students the opportunity to feed their love of theatre and study the craft in a way that is accessible to everyone. This season, Master Acting Classes engaged more than 400 teens and adults from all over

the Washington metropolitan area, including several scholarship students.

SHAKESPEARE SALONS In the 2015–2016 Season, Shakespeare Salons offered theatre novices and experts alike a way to analyze,

contextualize and consider the plays of the STC Season at a sophisticated level. Classes met on

Friday afternoons for three- to five-week sessions. Salon participants gained in-depth perspective on Othello, 1984 and The Taming of the Shrew. They met with Audience Enrichment Manager Hannah Hessel Ratner and special guests from around the theatre as they studied text, themes and the nuts and bolts of making a Shakespeare Theatre Company production.

VOLUNTEERS Devoted volunteers are vital to the daily operations of the Shakespeare Theatre Company. During the season, volunteer ushers were essential as friendly and welcoming representatives to our theatre patrons.

This past season, over 700 volunteers, including more than 50 new ushers gave their time to STC. Volunteers also provided assistance with many special events and education programs, including Free For All, Meet the Cast receptions for each mainstage show and SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinees.

CITIZENS FOR SHAKESPEARE Citizens for Shakespeare at the Free for All provided

priority access to Shakespeare’s plays for disadvantaged populations and young people,

groups who too often have only limited exposure to live theatre. In the 2015–2016 Season, 20 participating groups received reserved tickets to the Free For All and Play Guides, free of charge and before they became available to the public. Participating groups from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. included home school collectives, Girl Scout troops, after-school clubs and social organizations for youth in low-income areas.

READING AT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES Each summer STC teams up with the Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences to

present a reading that matches great theatre with fascinating science. In June of 2016 STC presented a

reading of Miss Evers’ Boys, directed by Samantha Wyer Bello, Director of Education. The 1992 play by David Feldshuh explored the personal stories behind the real Tuskegee experiment studying the effects of untreated syphilis. Over 500 audience members attended the reading, which brought to light ethical issues regarding scientific and medical experimentation.

It was a privilege to honor Julie Taymor with the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre and JM Zell Partners, Ltd. with the Sidney Harman Award for Philanthropy in the Arts at the 2015 Harman Center for the Arts Annual Gala.

The day-long celebration, held on November 1, began with a morning reception for the event’s most generous supporters, graciously hosted by Ambassador Kim Beazley at the Australian Embassy. In the afternoon, VIP guests enjoyed champagne and hors d’oeuvres as they mingled at Sidney Harman Hall before the performance. The performance, Imagine: Shakespeare, featured Dame Helen Mirren and performances by opera singer Albina Shagimuratova, Joffrey Principal Dancers Fabrice Calmels and Victoria Jaiani, Broadway stars Jennifer Damiano and Tom Alan Robbins, and a surprise performance of “Circle of Life,” led by Tsidii Le Loka, the original Rafiki from Taymor’s Broadway production of The Lion King. Guests were also treated to video footage of Taymor’s masterful interpretations of Shakespearean text, introduced by STC and Taymor collaborators Tina Benko, Sam Tsoutsouvas and Clifton Duncan. Last but not least, our artistic and educational programs were highlighted by a musical medley from Kiss Me, Kate, a video montage of STC Education programs at work in our community and a remarkable recitation of Hamlet’s “To be or not to be…” soliloquy by the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Camp Shakespeare alumnus Jackson de Vallance, age 12.

After the curtain descended to thunderous applause, guests followed a starlit path from Sidney Harman Hall to the National Building Museum, where they were immersed in a magical world of bright colors and three-dimensional art installations. SHAKESPEARE & CERVANTES On Wednesday, May 4, 2016 STC Trustee and ThinkFoodGroup Co-Founder Rob Wilder and his wife, Robin, hosted a fundraiser in their home to celebrate the lives of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.

These two greats of western literature are said to have died on the same day: April 23, 1616. Renowned flamenco guitarist Ricardo Marlow created a festive atmosphere as guests enjoyed a menu designed by Jaleo Executive Chef Ramon Martinez and ThinkFoodGroup Chef and Owner José Andrés, featuring dishes from the La Mancha region of Spain. Helen Hayes Awardees Natascia Diaz and Edward Gero performed a moving tribute to the literary legends. The performance included the opening lines of Don Quixote recited in Spanish and English, Hamlet’s famous “What a piece of work is man” monologue (act 2, scene 2) and two songs from Man of La Mancha. The Shakespeare and Cervantes event raised more than $20,000 to support STC’s arts education and community engagement programs,

including the annual Free For All.

THE TRIAL OF WINSTON VS. OCEANIA – 1984 ANNUAL DINNER AND MOCK TRIAL

Treading on the heels of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Women’s Voices Theater Festival world premiere production of Yaël Farber’s Salomé, the Bard Association’s Trial of Salomé examined the

suppression of women in power throughout history.

The jury was asked if Salomé’s conviction for conspiracy to murder should be upheld by the Tribunes. The Trial featured an all-female panel of judges including Justice Elena Kagan of the Supreme Court of the United States (presiding), Judge Cornelia T.L. Pillard of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the United States District Court for D.C. Representing Salomé was Deborah B. Baum of Pillsbury, LLP. Carol Elder Bruce of K&L Gates LLP represented the prosecution counsel.

Additionally, Lisa S. Blatt of Arnold & Porter LLP led a moderated discussion with the Honorable Anne Anderson, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, while the Tribunes deliberated. Fortunately for Salomé, the verdict was delivered squarely in her favor and she lived to freely dance another day.

The Trial of Winston vs. Oceania - 1984 provided plenty of opportunities for the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Bard Association, advocates and bench to impress with their quick thinking and creativity. Based on George Orwell’s 1984, the Mock Trial audience was asked if, given the context of war (or threat

to national security), Oceania officials named as defendants in Smith’s lawsuit should be held liable for their treatment of Winston Smith in 1984. The

illustrious bench included Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court of the United States (presiding), who was joined by Justice Stephen G. Breyer, Judge David S. Tatel, Judge Patricia A. Millett and Judge Cornelia T.L. Pillard of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Amy Jeffress of Arnold & Porter LLP was the Counsel for Winston Smith, and the Respondent of the State of Oceania was Bob Bauer of Perkins Coie LLP. Fortunately for Mr. Smith, the jury supported his claims to constitutional rights. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg announced the final verdict, stating: “On the merits, this is a very easy case, because if ‘War is Peace,’ then we are all in peacetime, and there is no need for these extraordinary measures.”

WILL ON THE HILL Monday, June 13, 2016 Sidney Harman Hall

Each year, Will on the Hill brings together Washington’s political and media elite to celebrate arts education and the work of Shakespeare. Will on the Hill continues to break records and the 2016 event raised over $515,000 for STC’s education and engagement programs, including Text Alive!

Following the pre-performance reception with 40 Members of Congress and Washington influencers, guests settled in for the show. The Will on the Hill performance was preceded by a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream prepared by a Text Alive! class from Westfield High School—featuring the play-within-a-play and Puck’s closing speech—a key demonstration of the programs supported by Will on the Hill’s fundraising efforts.

The illustrious cast of Peter Byrne’s original play, Heavy Lies the Head then took the stage, featuring Emmy Award-winner Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards) and D.C. favorites Felicia Curry and Tom Story. Fellow cast members included Senator Chris Coons, The Honorable Kim Darroch (British Ambassador to the United States), Grover Norquist (Americans for Tax Reform), Michael Steele (MSNBC) and nearly 20 U.S. Representatives including Reps. Jim McDermott, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Michael Turner and Ann Wagner. The show “warmed our bipartisan-craving hearts” (Roll Call), and found creative ways to work in good-natured jabs at contemporary political issues while still centering on the theme of working across the aisle. Of course, the power of Shakespeare triumphed in the end!
