Young people taking next steps in Lincoln

BY IAN MCGOWAN HEAD OF SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES ENGAGEMENT UNIVERSITY OF LINCOLN YEAR upon year more young people in our region are making the University of Lincoln their choice and in doing so staying closer to home.

Rising living costs are also impacting the choices that students make when deciding which university they want to study at, with evidence suggesting an increasing number are prioritising a lower cost of living.

This will include choosing to remain closer to home or looking at universities in cities with a lower living costs.

Lincoln was ranked as the fifth cheapest UK city for students by Oxford Royale earlier this year.

With the city’s improved transport links the university is a great choice for students who want to stay close to home but also to visit friends further afield.

The University of Lincoln is also supporting its students with the cost of

living once they begin studying.

A dedicated Cost of Living Hub, launched in partnership with Lincoln Students’ Union, provides information and resources to help those feeling the pinch.

Initiatives include a Cost of Living Support meet with staff from support services over a free breakfast It also features many tips for managing money more effectively, making the most of student discounts, and details the support available for those who are struggling financially.

The latter includes the university’s Financial Assistance Fund to help with a range of specific costs such as commutes to campus, course-related travel, and general living and course costs. All can be applied for by those most in need.

There is also has a range of scholarships and bursaries including the University of Lincoln Scholarship worth £1,500 over three years of study.

The university’s city-centre campus also makes it ideal for students who want parttime work while studying with plenty of companies nearby that may look for parttime workers in close proximity.

In addition, the University of Lincoln and Lincoln Students’ Union has dedicated careers and employability services as well as offering on-campus employment opportunities that can help students find flexible work that fits around their studies Throughout all the support it offers, the university places a strong emphasis on the wellbeing of those experiencing hardship, it recognises the impact financial worries can have on mental health and ensures students are aware of the expert support available through the university’s Wellbeing Team and Students’ Union. www.lincoln.ac.uk

Students follow in The Beatles’ Abbey Road footsteps BUDDING sound and music producers followed in the footsteps of The Beatles during a visit to the Abbey Road Recording Studios.

A group of second and third year students from the University of Lincoln, UK’s BA (Hons) Sound and Music Production course were able to experience a day in the life of some of the world’s most eminent record producers and performers at the iconic studio complex.

The students spent most of the two-day trip in the famous Abbey Road Studio No 2, the studio where The Beatles made the majority of their recordings.

Dr Stephen Bruel, Programme Leader for Sound and Music Production, said: “Abbey Road Studios was an amazing and holistic experience for our students. As soon as you step inside that iconic building you realise you are somewhere very special.

“During their visit the students worked directly with award winning industry professionals on industry standard workflows and equipment in a world-class facility, they gained an understanding of and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and history of Abbey Road Studios and learnt insights on how best to prepare for and progress a career in sound and music production.”

New Chancellor for University of Lincoln THE Rt. Hon Prof the Lord Ajay Kakkar KBE PC will be installed as the next Chancellor of the University of Lincoln ahead of its graduation ceremonies at Lincoln Cathedral in September.

The surgeon, scientist and crossbench member of the House of Lords, will succeed Lord Victor Adebowale CBE, who steps down from the role after almost 15 years.

Lord Kakkar completed his medical degree at King’s College London and received his PhD from Imperial College London and has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons since 1992.

Clearing the way to your future RESULTS Day is a big moment for young people and families across Lincoln with this year’s A Level results released on Thursday, August 17.

Those students receiving their grades will be looking ahead to a variety of exciting future paths – including, for many, starting university courses in September.

At the University of Lincoln, A Level Results Day is one of the most important dates in the academic calendar. It’s the day when prospective undergraduates from all over the country have their places confirmed and can start planning for a new chapter in their educational journey.

“It can be a day of mixed emotions too and the annual Clearing process is a vital in ensuring talented students are able to access the benefits of higher education,” said Emma Jubbs, Director of Marketing and Recruitment.

Universities use Clearing to allocate the remaining places on undergraduate courses for a given academic year. Despite being a fixture of the university admissions process for decades, it’s still often misunderstood.

Opportunity knocks for A-level students “Students apply through Clearing for a range of reasons: sometimes because their grades were not what was needed to meet the standard entry conditions of their university offer; because they have changed their mind about where and what to study; or because they have decided to apply for university later in the application cycle,” explained Emma “Whatever the reason, Clearing is a great way to find the perfect university course – especially if you prepare in advance! According to UCAS, last year a record number of 18-year-olds secured their university place in Clearing: more than 33,000 out of around 275,000 students accepted onto courses nationally.

“Many of our students who have entered the University of Lincoln through Clearing over the years have gone on to love their times as undergraduates and progress into rewarding careers.”

Francesca is an Advanced Paralegal and Trainee Solicitor who joined the University of Lincoln through Clearing in 2014. She graduated with a law degree in 2018 and started work at Edmonson Hall Solicitors as a Legal Assistant shortly afterwards.

“I had always dreamed of becoming a lawyer but doubted myself and chose not to apply. When I received my A Level results, I called up Lincoln and applied through Clearing and got a place on the Law course. Without this opportunity, I would not be where I am today “Nothing can stop you from pursuing your dreams if you really work hard for it!”

Shantae Rayat always had a passion for Chemistry and wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of her dream. She didn’t quite get the

A Level results she was hoping for, and although she was initially distraught, she decided not to give up and joined the University of Lincoln through Clearing, studying Forensic Chemistry. She now works for the global pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca as a CMC Regulatory Affairs Associate.

Shantae said: “‘I was inspired to study at the University of Lincoln because I didn’t know any other universities that offered my course; it was very unique.

“I studied an integrated Master’s in Forensic Chemistry for four years. In my final year I had the opportunity to go on placement at Bard Pharmaceuticals. This encouraged me to build up a wide range of interpersonal skills from critical thinking to presenting which I would be able to transfer to any role.”

Tom Candy is currently working in his dream job as a Senior Training and Behaviour Advisor for Dogs Trust. After accepting a place at Lincoln via Clearing, he quickly fell in love with both the city and the university.

Tom said: “Getting a place through Clearing changed the direction of my life in a massive way.

“I completed undergraduate in Bio-Veterinary Science, and went on to do a Master’s in Clinical Animal Behaviour directly after.

“Without getting into Lincoln through Clearing I’d have missed a number of opportunities to develop my love for animal behaviour and I’ll always be so grateful that the Clearing route was available.”

‘It can’t be business as usual’

Lincoln CAP aims to make the city a Green Innovation Centre.

BY REBECCA POOLE THE University of Lincoln is committed to driving research into developing ways to improve the environment, in line with the Sustainable Innovation pathway of the Lincoln Climate Action Plan.

“I think there’s recognition that we can’t just continue business as usual and expect to meet the deliverables set out in the Climate Action Plan (CAP),” explained Rebecca Mills, Head of Sustainability at University of Lincoln.

“It’s going to require us to rethink systems, to change our ways of working, develop new technology, invest in research to develop new products that really can result in wider system change.”

At the beginning of Lincoln Climate Commission’s journey, Rebecca was the university representative and played a role in founding the group alongside colleagues from the university such as Andrew Kythreotis, and Kate Bell from City of Lincoln Council.

“I’ve been sitting on the Lincoln Climate Commission and supporting the development of the Climate Action Plan, which has been predominantly driven by Kate and colleagues from the City of Lincoln Council, but the university is definitely committed to supporting its development.”

The university has set out its own Sustainability Strategy 2027 which means that embedding sustainability into research is now being applied. Rebecca explained that net-zero is one part of the strategy, but that it is also being used as a core research theme “Embedding sustainability within our research is one of the core themes, so ‘net-zero’ is the simple way to describe that, but actually it has a wider remit than just focussing on carbon emissions because we’ve not only declared a climate emergency as a university, but also a climate and ecological emergency.

“We are quite actively involved with the decarbonisation of the Humber industrial cluster, but also for example, at Riseholme our Lincoln institute for Agri-food technology works very closely 28

within the agricultural sector to develop innovative solutions to decrease the environmental and carbon impact of farming.”

The university’s Riseholme campus is leading collaborative research between the university, SAGA Robotics, and Berry Gardens Ltd to use new autonomous systems, such as high-speed picking robots. to increase productivity growth, improve food safety, and reduce the environmental impact of soft fruit production, for example with strawberries. This project is supported and funded by UK Research and Innovative UK. Objectives of the Sustainable Innovation pathway of the CAP include developing Lincoln as a Green Innovation Centre through researching eco-friendly and energy saving technologies.

The Riseholme Strawberry Research and Trial Site has been an ongoing project for a couple of years, making a positive impact towards Sustainable Innovation, and the community through collaborative projects and community involvement to generate social value.

For example, since the start of the pandemic, the strawberries that have been grown are donated to Mint Lane Café to support the valuable community work it does.

“There’s a lot of varied projects and each one will have different benefits, some will be more skewed towards specifically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and all of them will ultimately lead to that if they are aligned with net-zero.”

The university is currently working to develop its own net-zero roadmap, with aims to make the institution greener.

“We’ve set a target ourselves to be net-zero by 2040, and that includes all scopes of emissions which is quite challenging, as it also includes our supply chain, student commuting, business travel, all of our indirect emissions.

“We’re working with a consultancy to put an action plan together for us and we’re hoping to publish that at the end of this summer.”

There is a better way

BY REBECCA POOLE AN innovative sustainable farming project has received recognition in a government environmental paper for its potential contribution to carbon reduction.

The Reverse Coal project has been developed by a team of academics, farmers, and engineers, including Lincoln Institute of Agri-Technology (LIAT) and the School of Engineering at University of Lincoln (UoL).

“Fossil fuels have been used for so long in food production that their negative impact cannot be understated, but this project proves that there is a better way,” explained Dr Amir Badiee, Senior Lecturer, School of Engineering at UoL. “Reverse Coal sequesters carbon and produces food with positive environmental impact. This solves the inherent dilemma of bioenergy crops: the loss of land from food production.

“It’s fantastic to see this being highlighted in the government’s environmental strategy. It really is a great example of how rethinking the use of current resources can have such a positive impact.”

The project is taking place at Lapwing Estate near Doncaster, which is known for being an innovative leader in rethinking peatlands and how they can be more responsibly managed.

Although peatlands are one of the most fertile lands in the UK for food growth, the process emits excessive amounts of carbon which contributes to the climate crisis.

“Lapwing have been working with Professor Simon Pearson (Director of LIAT) & Dr Amir Badiee for over five years now, helping to shape and direct my vision for a better food system,” said James Brown, CEO of Lapwing Farms.

“The global food system is responsible not only for 30% of CO2 emissions but also 60% of nature loss and we need radical transformation.”

The Reverse Coal project shifts to indoor farming using a sustainable biomass fuel source as its power. Through a process of

growing biomass feed stock and treating this with a thermochemical method, called pyrolysis, the energy is produced.

This technique also produces ‘biochar’, which can then be stored in a unique facility to demonstrate that carbon can be permanently captured.

Biochar is a similar substance to charcoal that is made by burning the organic material from agricultural practices, such as wood chips, in a controlled process. It differs from common charcoal however, which is associated with heating, as the process to create biochar reduces contamination, safely stores carbon and has history in agriculture.

The initiative aims to help carbon sequestration, which is the process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide, and remove emissions whilst protecting the natural environment and improving UK food security.

“Any change must be grounded in practical science to ensure real, sustainable, longterm improvement delivering nutritious food as part of a holistic system and we are grateful for the support of the University of Lincoln in providing this,” said James.

Reverse Coal has been used as a positive case study in the Government’s Environmental Improvement Plan 2023, and has been selected for both Phase One and Phase Two of the Government’s Greenhouse Gas Removal Programme.

This will provide funding for the scheme to continue and develop.

The project directly supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve a more sustainable future for all, whilst also working towards the Sustainable Innovation pathway of Lincoln’s Climate Action Plan, which focuses on creating and developing alternative ways to drive the world towards net zero carbon.

Safety first for students THOUSANDS of students descended on Lincoln last month and police are working with partners to give young people the information they need to stay safe and keep their property secure.

Their aim is to make sure the students are equipped with the information they need to stay out of harm’s way.

Police provided information around consent, the StreetSafe app/website and the campaign ‘You’re right, that’s wrong’ over the Freshers’ Week period.

They also offered tips to combat burglary, so students know how to secure their belongings presented in of posters and videos.

PC Mark Wrigley, University of Lincoln Police Officer, said: “Higher education students make up a large part of Lincoln’s population and it’s really important that we engage with them.

“We have been working in partnership with the university for some time now and it’s been a really strong and positive collaboration.

“Over the course of Freshers’ Week we talked about safety, awareness of your surroundings, burglary, drug awareness and more.”

Julie Spencer, Head of Student Wellbeing/ Deputy Director of Student Services, said: “”The University of Lincoln enjoys an excellent relationship with Lincolnshire Police.

“We work collaboratively to support our students, so they feel safe, both on campus and within the city.

WARTIME spies, historical heroines, spectral children and vampire sheep - these are just a selection of the eclectic cast of characters at this year’s Lincoln Book Festival.

The annual literary festival returns in October with fiction and non-fiction authors from a rich variety of genres visiting the city for guest talks, discussions and family-friendly creative activities.

Million copy best-selling fiction writer Christy Lefteri is among the high profile authors who will be discussing their latest works.

Best known for her international hit debut, The Beekeeper of Aleppo, her latest novel is The Book of Fire, an intimate and epic story set against the backdrop of forest fires in Greece.

There are eight events to choose from, spread across two weeks from October 5-20. Lincoln is the stage for several tales from the setting of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln to romance blossoming on modern-day Steep Hill.

Comedy writer Emily-Jane Clark will delight younger readers with her debut children’s book, The Beasts of Knobbly Bottom: Attack of the Vampire Sheep.

Espionage, suspicion and treachery abound in an evening of true and fictional tales of spies with journalist turned thriller writer Alex Gerlis revealing his new novel, Agent in the Shadows. Social historian Neil R Storey also uncovers ‘Nazi Spies and Collaborators in Britain, 1939-45.’

Emerging from the British Library Tales of the Weird anthology series are two collections of gothic scares and strangeness. In conversation with Tim Rideout, Daniel Pietersen describes I Am Stone. The Gothic Weird Tales of R. Murray Gilchrist. Dr Jen Baker sends more chills down the spine with her book Minor Hauntings: Chilling Tales of Spectral Youth.

Lincoln Book Festival favourite iconic music journalist and punk artist John Robb returns with his latest book, The Art of Darkness: The History of Goth. There will be a debut too from Nick Banks, from Britpop band Pulp, with So It Started There: From Punk to Pulp.

Our beautiful greener city A WEEK-long climate festival returns to the University of Lincoln this month, celebrating nature and highlighting actions that can be taken for it to thrive.

This year’s theme, Nature Positivity, aims to raise awareness of ways the natural world is currently being supported locally, and how we can all do our bit to help.

“A key aim for the University is to engage with our staff, students, and members of the local community on positive action and education in relation to sustainability, climate change and biodiversity,” explained Rebecca Mills, Head of Sustainability at University of Lincoln.

“We hope to include as many people as possible in this week of events and instill a sense of Climate Hope and an appreciation of the natural world.”

The university is committed to the protection of the environment, and since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, has continued to work with staff, students, and the wider community to implement sustainable pathways to work towards the city’s climate goals.

Green spaces have been developed on UoL’s Brayford Pool Campus, including wildflower meadows and pollinator enhancing rewilded areas on the estate.

Students are also encouraged to get involved with many of the university’s environmental projects such as the annual Brayford Pool clean-up.

Other local organisations supporting The Lincoln Climate Action Festival include the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Lincoln Climate Commission, and Wilder Doddington which has embarked on a 400-year project to bring more nature back to the Doddington Estate.

The event aims to inspire people to adopt sustainable habits and climate-friendly approaches in their own lives to help support the city’s wildlife.

Organisations have different initiatives planned to provide opportunities for hands-

on activities to get involved with, such as wildlife surveying, learning about carbon neutral practices, and a sustainability café with a book swap.

A dedicated art exhibition will also be hosted in the University’s Project Space Plus gallery, showcasing local artists celebrating nature in all of its forms.

Creatives interested in being part of the exhibition are encouraged to submit their nature-positive artwork, including wildlife photography and plant-based or biodegradable art.

Top award for university THE University of Lincoln has been awarded the country’s highest honour for universities and colleges.

The Queen’s Anniversary Prize recognises the ground-breaking work of the university’s Institute for Agri-food Technology (LIAT) supporting farming and food industries.

It is part of the national honours system - akin to a CBE for higher and further education - and recognises outstanding work by colleges and universities showing excellence, innovation and benefit to the wider world.

LIAT’s multi-disciplinary team of researchers brings together sector-leading expertise in a diverse range of disciplines, including agriculture, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, engineering, crop science, environmental sustainability, food manufacturing, and supply chain management, among many others.

They are engaged in internationally significant research in collaboration with a range of academic and industry partners, from family-run businesses to multi-national corporations.

The University of Lincoln hosts the UK’s first global centre of

excellence in agri-robotics research, Lincoln AgriRobotics.

Along with the University of Cambridge and University of East Anglia, Lincoln is also a partner in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training for Agri-food Robotics (AgriFoRwArdS) - a first-ofits-kind advanced training centre.

Professor Simon Pearson (bottom right), Founding Director of LIAT at the University of Lincoln, said: “The sustainable supply of high quality, nutritious food is a foundation of successful societies and economies all over the world. The way we produce food is also a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. Improving productivity, efficiency and sustainability across the global food chain is therefore not just good business, it’s vital to maintaining food security.

“The Lincoln Institute for Agri-food Technology unites partners from across the food eco-system — farmers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and consumers – alongside world-leading researchers from an array of academic specialisms and institutions to design and deliver impactful, applied R&D for the agri-food industries here in the UK and internationally.

Festival reaches out to communities A WEEK of positive climate action saw more than 500 people take park in events at the University of Lincoln The university’s Climate Action Festival returned for its third year in November when students, staff and the public were invited to view local art and photography with a Nature Positive Lincoln theme,;take part in discussions on Place-based Climate action and sustainability in education; engage in carbon literacy training and Net-Zero workshops.

There were also opportunities to learn how to survey wildlife; take part in citizen science; join the Wilder Doddington ranger team for a day and discover how to use nature-based pigments in art.

“The Climate Action Festival has not only given an opportunity for the University of Lincoln to showcase some of the exciting research and projects undertaken here,but has also enabled the establishment of new external links with our local communities and businesses who have attended, “ said Dr Andrew Kythreotis, Senior Lecturer, Social & Political Geography “As a Lincoln climate commissioner, I think this is something that is not only integral to facilitating place-based climate action across the city but will also be beneficial in helping Lincoln Climate Commission reach and network with, a wider local audience.”

Gold standard university on your doorstep THE University of Lincoln has again been awarded Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold status, the highest rating for delivering consistently outstanding standards of teaching, learning and outcomes for students.

“This achievement bookends a remarkable year of national recognition for the university across areas including research, sustainability and support for local businesses among others,” said Vice-Chancellor Prof Neal Juster.

In November, Lincoln won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, the highest National Honour in UK further and higher education, demonstrating the national and global impact of the University’s research, education and technological innovations.

The prizes are granted every two years by the Sovereign to UK colleges and universities showing excellence, innovation and benefit to the wider world. Lincoln’s award praised its work supporting the sustainability of the UK’s food and farming industries.

“The expertise developed at the university is also contributing to local public services with graduates from the university’s School of Health and Social Care and Lincoln Medical School helping the local area recruit and retain doctors, nurses, paramedics and a range of healthcare professionals.

“In addition, the Lincoln Medical School is beginning the process to operate independently of the University of Nottingham as part of its major role to train future generations of hospital doctors and GPs to serve communities across our region.

With a significant share of the University’s new undergraduates coming from Lincoln and the surrounding area, the university is dedicated to delivering high quality education for local people.

The UCAS equal consideration deadline is approaching at the end of January for people applying to start courses in September 2024, but there are still many opportunities for local people to find out

Police E-scooter warning ELECTRIC scooters are motor vehicles illegal on Lincoln’s roads and pavements.

That’s the reminder from Lincolnshire Police to new E-scooter owners as the city is not one of the trial areas currently allowing the vehicles on the road.

They can only be used on private land with the owner’s permission and illegal use could result in a fixed penalty notice, a fine of up to £300, up to six penalty points and seizure of the e-scooter.
