They also employ a greater proportion of the workforce locally than nationally and research has show that for every £1 spent with an independent venture up to 70p goes back into that local economy compared to just 5p if your shop online or with a big corporation.

By shopping local we’re not only supporting a small business owner, we’re having a positive impact in the area we live too.

As a small independent company sharing the uncertainty of this pandemic-driven times we believe it is vital that we all support the people running and working in the shops, services, industries and organisations on our doorstep.

This is a call for people to remember those businesses and the extra pressures they may be facing due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Small Business Saturday 2020 will be on December 5 this year and over the next few weeks we will be working with partners to not only make this a great event in Lincoln, but to try and ensure loyalty is year-round and not just for Christmas.

Cathedral’s £1.5m bid to cover Coronavirus losses LINCOLN Cathedral has launched an urgent fundraising appeal to secure its future as a place of worship and an international visitor attraction, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ‘Provide, Protect, Preserve’ recovery appeal has a target of £1.5million to stabilise the Cathedral’s finances.

COVID-19 has taken a significant toll not only on the pattern of worship, but also on visitor numbers and events which provide a significant proportion of the income to support the Cathedral’s ongoing operation. It is unlikely that there will be a return to preCOVID visitor levels in the near future; as a result, the Cathedral

has had to take difficult steps to ensure the survival of its purpose and financial viability.

The Very Revd Christine Wilson, Dean of Lincoln said, “This recovery appeal will ensure that we can provide a sacred space for worship, welcome, hospitality and spiritual nurture, that meets the needs of the community as we all continue to live with the reality of COVID-19.

WHEN it comes to the slogan ‘Shop Local’ the League of Gentlemen has got a lot to answer for.

As a message it is more germane than ever, but every time I come to write it as a headline an image of Tubbs and Edward comes flashing into my mind…off-putting to say the least.

Actually I probably should thank the League because my aversion made me work harder to come up with the money shot and heading to impress upon our readers how vital it is to support the retail community and small businesses on their doorsteps.

The result is the front page for this issue – designed to make to you immediately turn to Page 3 and read all the reasons you should ‘Shop Local’ without visions of Royston Vasey.

This is our first edition in print since in March, which was another reason we wanted the front cover to be extra special and have the wow factor…we hope you love it as much as we do.

Our thanks obviously go to artist Richard Briggs for the use of his image of Steep Hill (see more about Richard and his work on page 29). We felt it captured the way independent shops and businesses add to the vibrancy and uniqueness of Lincoln.

Speaking of the Lincoln’s unique character I have a request to make of city residents – please take note of the push to have local government in this area reorganised (see page 5).

struggles amid pandemic uncertainty, but it could have a huge impact life as we know it in the city in the future.

The Lincolnshire County Council’s latest press release mentions the savings that would be made with unitary authorities on a national level.

We know City of Lincoln Council and some of the district authorities have a completely different viewpoint and are really concerned about residents losing their voice about the place they live.

I sympathise with that view…the county’s press release was sent by its Comms Chief Karen Spencer. Not so long ago we asked Karen if the county council wanted to engage with the people of Lincoln.

“No.” was the unequivocal answer. She followed it up by saying: “They’re not our people.”

I took this to mean they are not Tory voters from rural areas.

I’m so glad she mentioned Durham as being a large rural county in which the residents have benefitted from regorganisation.

I’m originally from Darlington in County Durham where my uncle was Leader of the Council for many years. He oversaw Darlington becoming a unitary authority, but his vision meant the town (same size as Lincoln) became the master of its own destiny with most services. It is a very different scenario from what the county council is suggesting and at the time County Durham wasn’t too chuffed - more cash went directly into Darlo’s coffers.

Macmillan’s vital fundraiser IN 1990 Margaret Thatcher was in the last days of her time in No10, Home Alone was one of the biggest films of the year and Ice Ice Baby by Robert Van Winkle – better known as Vanilla Ice – was storming the charts.

It was also the first year of the fundraising Macmillan Coffee Mornings.

Many things are very different 30 years on but the public’s appetite for this charity event has grown every year Since 1990 hundreds of thousands of people have hosted Macmillan Coffee Mornings, tucked into delicious cakes and enjoyed a cuppa with friends, neighbours and strangers to help provide the vital support people living with cancer rely on.

“Due to Covid-19, although supporters might not be allowed to pack into houses,

village halls, fire stations or community centres in the same way we’ve all enjoyed before,” said Ruth Willis, Partnership Manager for Macmillan in Lincolnshire (pictured).

“We’re encouraging the British public to get involved whenever, wherever and in whatever way they can.

“Every 90 seconds someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer and in Lincolnshire there are currently over 27,000 people living with and beyond cancer. We’re doing everything we can to provide vital emotional, financial or clinical support for people living with cancer.

“Our work is almost entirely funded by donations and every penny raised at a Coffee Morning helps us to provide vital support to people with cancer.

The coffee mornings have helped to finance a new Macmillan Support Centre at Lincoln County Hospital, more than 91 healthcare professionals across the county and Macmillan Grants to help people living with cancer overcome everyday challenges.

Ruth added: “We’re incredibly excited about Coffee Morning 2020, it’s always so fantastic to see so many people get involved to raise crucial funds to allow us to help the

EMERGENCY response charity, LIVES marked its 50 year anniversary at Doddington Hall and Gardens with its bi-annual sculpture exhibition as the backdrop to the celebrations.

The setting enabled LIVES to showcase its services while abiding to social distancing guidelines giving supporters the opportunity to chat to the team and witness life-saving scenarios carried out by the charityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volunteers.

Nikki Cooke, CEO (pictured below) explained: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have been really excited about our 50th anniversary year, but COVID has hampered many of our plans and activities. We are so grateful to Doddington Hall who have allowed us an opportunity to see so many of our wonderful supporters and celebrate this important milestone.â&#x20AC;?

The invitation-only event welcomed a wide range of guests from LIVES responders and their families to Lincolnshire businesses who have supported the charity, many who help to raise the ÂŁ1.4 million needed to keep the army of responders on the road.

The charity provides equipment, support and sector leading training to volunteers so that they can respond to medical emergencies in Lincolnshire. Each Responder is tasked to an emergency by the control centre in Bracebridge Heath, which receives incoming 999 calls. LIVESâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; volunteers include doctors, nurses and paramedics and Community First Responders, who train to different level, all of whom have saved thousands of lives across the county since the service was launched 50 years ago.

One of the guests was Independent Director Rachel Bishop: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a lovely event that really highlighted how much LIVES is needed in our large rural county. Dr Martin Smith, BSc DOptom DipTp(IP) Higher Cert Glauc MCOptom, established his own practice in 2004 and, through further research and academic training, has become one of the most highly qualified Doctors of Optometry in the UK,” explained practice manager Sue Edwards.

Dr Smith (pictured top) is a glaucoma and macular expert who can advise and treat many eye conditions within the practice and as an Independent Prescriber he is able to issue prescriptions for medication saving patients a visit the hospital.

This year the practice has invested in a Zeiss Clarus 500 ultrawidefield, true colour, super high definition retinal camera, one of the first practices in the world to offer this system which can image up to 90% of the retina, compared to standard cameras which see only 15%.

Using advance equipment also means Dr Smith can minimise faceto-face contact with patients during eye examinations and socially distance while analysing the results.

“Traditional eye examinations require a considerable amount of direct face to face contact which even with PPE is undesirable, particularly during a pandemic,” said Dr Smith.

“Instead of a trial frame that an optometrist will put the lenses into whilst leaning over the patient we use a computerised equipment to give an accurate measurement of the prescription.

“This is then refined and I can change the lenses in front of the patient from a computer console, while behind a screen. It is faster and more accurate than traditional refraction and safer and more comfortable for the patient.”

Eye health is examined with a combination of a photographic slit lamp to look at the front of the eye, a scanning laser

ophthalmoscope (SLO) to give a widefield view of the retina and an optical coherence tomographer (OCT), which gives a scan of the retina and optic nerve.

“Using these instruments a huge amount of data can be gathered in just 3-4 minutes which I can then review from a socially distanced position. Not only is this faster than traditional methods, it is much more sensitive for detecting eye disease and much safer for the patient.”

The practice also has one of the most highly qualified and industry awarded teams in the UK – with 10 national accolades including Optometrist of the Year 2015, 2019 (Finalist 2018), Dispensing Optician of the Year 2018, 2019 (Finalist 2017), UK Practice of the Year 2019 (Finalist 2018) and Practice Team of the Year (Finalist 2018).

The team has introduced other new measures to protect patients from risk. A strict appointment only policy ensures that the practice is kept exclusive at all times with additional measures for cleanliness, screens and hand gels/masks.

AROUND 9.5million people in the UK are currently absent from work on furlough leave as part of the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job retention scheme.

This has cost in the region of ÂŁ34.7 billion and the total bill will be around ÂŁ80 billion when the scheme ends on October 31, 2020.

Despite this investment many employers are contemplating redundancies.

There is a common misconception among furloughed employees they will be automatically dismissed when furlough ends. The governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rescue package has not altered employment law and, therefore, any restructuring by an employer needs to be undertaken fairly with consultation for redundancy selection and in accordance with equality laws.

The employersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first consideration should be to focus on the type of work that is no longer needed and to identify those employees performing that work.

Employers must follow a consultation procedure and make dismissal decisions that are fair and reasonable in the circumstances. Where more than 20 redundancy dismissals are being considered within a 90-day window this will require compliance with statutory collective consultation requirements too.

Employers should avoid the temptation of treating only those on furlough leave as the pool of candidates for selection. This pool should be determined objectively and without regard to which staff have been furloughed. To do otherwise raises the question of whether the selection process for furlough was thorough enough and opens up a potential unfair dismissal claim.

The traditional way is to identify those who perform the same or similar work and base the selection pool on this. If the number of redundancies required is less than the pool of candidates then the employer should devise a matrix criteria for scoring which consists of objective factors such as length of service and disciplinary records.

Those selected for redundancy should also be afforded the right to appeal their redundancy and given the chance to challenge the process.

A redundancy will probably be unfair unless the employer explores whether suitable alternative employment exists within its business. This means the employer must consider whether there are job openings available internally to avoid a redundancy dismissal. There should also be an investigation into whether it is possible to avoid or reduce the need for dismissals altogether, usually in consultation with the affected employees. Possible options may include arrangements like changing hours or job shares.

You are entitled to a statutory redundancy payment if you have been in continuous employment for two years or more. The amount you will receive will depend on how long you have been in the job, your age, and your salary.

You may be entitled to a greater redundancy payment if your contract of employment provides for it. You are also entitled to receive notice of termination of employment. This is a minimum of one weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s notice for each year you have worked for the employer, up to a maximum of 12 weeksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; notice. You may be entitled to a greater length if it is provided for in your contract of employment. You will also be entitled to payment for accrued but untaken holiday.

It is hoped that the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recently announced employer incentives will mitigate the number of redundancies that are expected, however, it is estimated that half of all employers in the UK will be making redundancies.

Burton Hathow always a safe space to learn and grow

BY CLAIRE LYON DEPUTY HEAD/SENCO/DSL BURTON HATHOW PREPARATORY SCHOOL THE education sector has seen some incredible and unpredictable changes this year.

Schools have had to adapt continuously to meet new guidelines and, for many schools and colleges, this has brought seemingly insurmountable challenges as they scramble around for non-existent spaces and work tirelessly to create â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bubblesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that meet the criteria determined by the DfE. National uncertainty and fear over the past six months has led so many of us reflect on what is important to us in our own lives, in our work places and, without doubt, in our childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s educations.

Such reflection has made us incredibly grateful at Burton Hathow that we have not had to face the many challenges that our neighbouring schools have.

At Burton Hathow we have such extensive outdoor space, which we have been able to use to offer a diverse and tailored curriculum to our children. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazing how young people can be inspired in writing whilst sitting within the woodland, or find purpose and meaning in an outdoor practical maths task exploring shape and

space, or data handling.

A piano on the playground allows the children to raise their voices in song in a way that is no longer possible indoors and we have discovered that art can be born from nature in so many different ways.

The outdoor space has always been pivotal to effective learning at Burton Hathow, but never more so than now. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what allowed us to have a full cohort of children back into school before the summer holidays, and it is what will allow us to stay safe and keep our pupils in school, making progress, should Lincoln be subject to a local lockdown in future months.

Indoors, smaller class sizes have meant that our pupils have suffered little change to their usual routine on returning to school. They continue to learn comfortably in their own classes of 12 or 14, with specialist teaching still in place and plenty of room to social distance from other bubbles.

In these adverse and uncertain times, open spaces and small class sizes are no longer an aspect of our school that we take for granted.

MORE than 90,000 cigarettes and 3.5kg of rolling tobacco were seized during raids on premises in Lincoln’s Portland Street.

The raids were all part of Operation Buckhorn, a joint venture between Lincolnshire County Council’s Trading Standards, Lincolnshire Police, and customs officials.

During the first raid on February 26 officers seized 50,000 cigarettes and 2kg of hand rolling tobacco from five stores known to be selling illicit tobacco.

Three of the five shops were raided again on August 20 when a further 40,000 cigarettes and 1.5kg of rolling tobacco were seized. One arrest was made.

Sniffer dogs alerted officers to the illegal cigarettes hidden in three secret compartments behind a wall in a toilet. The illegal products were also discovered in a compartment with a magnetic lock when they noticed the grouting on one section of a tiled wall was a different colour.

Trading Standards continue to prosecute retailers.

Andy Wright, Principal Trading Standards Officer said: “The availability of illegal tobacco acts as a magnet attracting anti-social behaviour and other crime to an area. We are pleased to be working with Lincolnshire Police to tackle this problem on Portland Street and feel we’ve already made a significant difference.

“After the initial raid on five shops in February, Trading Standards contacted each of the shop landlords. I am delighted to say that in two cases, the landlords took immediate action and evicted problem tenants and there has been no repetition.

“The remaining three premises were raided again and further evidence found of illicit tobacco selling.

“We’re keen to continue to work with premises landlords to bring an end to this illegal activity, and I believe two are already seeking to take legal action against tenants. With their help we could soon see the selling of illegal cigarettes on Portland Street as a thing of the past.”

Acting Inspector Phil Elliot of Lincolnshire Police added: “The ultimate goal of the operation is to stop the illegal practices at the shops on a permanent basis because it was identified that young people were being drawn to the shops to purchase these illicit cigarettes exposing them to significant risks.

“Improving the safety of children in the area has been the main concern of all agencies and I truly believe this has been achieved. I am really thankful for the enthusiasm and dedication shown by the teams from all three agencies, leading to such positive results that should have a long lasting effect.”

Redhillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Toad in the Hole Ingredients 8 Redhill Farm Lincolnshire Sausages 6oz/170g plain flour pinch of salt 1tsp dired oregano 2 Redhill Farm eggs 7fl oz/90ml water 1-2 tbsp pork dripping or rapeseed oil.

Method Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl, add the salt and oregano and mix. Make a well in the centreand crack in the two eggs.

Using an electric whisk beat together pouring the milk and water in at the same time. Whisk until there are no lumps. Use a pallet knife to scrape any bits from the edges of the bowl into the mix and whisk briefly. Leave this mix to stand at room temperature for 20-30 mins.

Heat the oven to 220C (200C Fan).

Put the dripping or oil in the roasting pan and heat in the oven until smoking hot. Add the sausages, spaced out evenly and then pour in the batter around the sausages.

Cook in the oven for 30-40 mins

Sweet and sour Lincolnshire sausages with garden orchard Victoria plums Ingredients 350g red onion wedges 500g skin on potato wedges 1 head of garlic, peeled and cut lengthways 6 tablespoons of rapeseed oil 50ml water 3 sticks of rosemary Salt and pepper 700g destoned and halved Victoria plums 60g dark brown sugar 100ml cider vinegar 2 tablespoons of sumac 12 Lincolnshire sausages Method 1 – On a baking tray or shallow dish, combine the garlic, onion, and potatoes with the rapeseed oil and 50ml water, place in a moderate oven until the vegetables are soft.

2 – Stirring the vegetables, place the plums on top & nestle in, then place the sausages on top of the plums.

3 – In a separate bowl, mix together the cider vinegar, sugar with two tablespoons of water and the sumac.

4 – Pour the sugar mixture over the sausages and cook for 40 minutes, turning the sausages occasionally until well cooked and the vegetables are nice and crispy.

Who needs champagne when you can buy British?

DO you always see a certain someone in the wine shop or perusing the rows of bottles in the supermarket? Fortunately for us that someone is Adam Butler (pictured with wife Ali), so we thought we’d get him to share his pearls of Wine Wisdom WHEN I think back, the first memory that I have of wine was in my late teens. I’d just started seeing a girl and she’d invited me to her flat. Thinking I needed to seriously impress, I decided to take some wine and turned up with a bottle each of Asti Spumante and Black Tower, thinking how sophisticated I was.

Some of my favourite memories of great wine are associated with wonderful occasions too. I’ve visited Turin for many years and the Piedmont area is one of the great wine regions of Italy. I remember having arrived there and going straight out for lunch in a beautiful piazza and drinking an amazing Barbera D’Alba with ravioli.

Then last year in Provence with my wife sitting on a hillside terrace on a beautiful day where you could see for miles and drinking Condrieu, a really lovely white that was recommended.

If I had to choose a favourite wine, it would be Rioja as a red or a New Zealand sauvignon as my white.

For special occasions, there are two British sparkling wines that I love, which in my humble opinion are better than most champagnes I’ve ever had: Camel Valley and Nyetimber.You can get both in rosés too, which are even nicer.

How to ditch the plastic in Lincoln WORDS AND PICTURE: REBECCA HARDY AROUND 30 businesses in Lincoln have pledged to go plastic free thanks to the efforts of local environmental campaigners.

Businesses who take the Plastic Free Pledge make a commitment to reduce their usage of single-use plastics and raise awareness of the alternatives to these plastics, such as taking your own Tupperware to the Butcher. Businesses that have already signed up to the pledge include Greens Health Food Store and Stokes Tea & Coffee.

Plastic Free Lincoln also wants to help the public swap single-use items in their homes to eco-friendly alternatives.

It is a small group of working mums, Louise, Sara and Vanessa, who volunteer to help the city achieve the Plastic Free Community Status award from environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage.

The mums are advising people to go plastic free one swap at a time: “Go for easy swaps first like taking bags with you when you shop, saying no to plastic straws and single-use plastic water bottles. Use up what you have and then replace that item with a non-plastic choice.”

Businesses and community spaces have been encouraged to work toward making change by signing up to the plastic free pledge, which means reducing single-use plastics and raising awareness of plastic-free options within the community.

Forage & Fill is a new plastic-free stall that opened in Lincoln’s

Central Market on Sincil Street in July. It is run by mother and daughter team, Nikki and Katie Goldblatt (pictured), who are keen to protect the environment.

“We are given limited options without plastic and we are trying to make eco-living more accessible, and much less of a chore.” said Nikki.

Food banks running low as use soars

DID you know that there are 28 Food Banks in the county across 10 towns - Lincoln, Deepings, Gainsborough, Grantham, Horncastle, Louth, Skegness, Sleaford, Spalding and Stamford?

Lincolnshire County Council has been collecting data on their recent use since the onset of the pandemic, and the results are stark.

Although these are likely to be partial data, they show that in May 2019, an average of 160 people made use of each food bank. In May 2020 this number had risen to 722.

The total number of people using the food banks had risen from nearly 1,600 in May 2019 to 7,216 in May 2020 – an increase of 450%. But this hides even more extreme increases.

The biggest has been in Gainsborough, with a rise in food bank use of over 1,300%.

In Louth usage has gone up by 1,140% and in Spalding by 1000%.

Coping with these increases is difficult for the food banks. Whilst most of the them operate largely through voluntary effort, there are inescapable running costs, and the majority of the food banks in the County survey face an uncertain future due to a lack of funds. One needs a new vehicle for pickup and delivery. Another needs a new kitchen.

At the same time, money donations – a significant source of income for most of them - have dwindled because we’ve been discouraged from handling cash. And bidding for funds, time consuming enough in itself, has become hugely more competitive as many more people are facing financial hardship.

And if finding the funds wasn’t hard enough, securing sufficient food has become a bigger challenge – nationally some food banks have had to close because of supply shortages. And finding volunteers is an increasing problem as older folk (the main source of volunteering) self-isolate.

If you are able to offer any help to these initiatives, just look up your nearest one – they will always be grateful for donations of food (and money) and of your time to help distribute it.

Dedicated dragonflies decorate Doddington MORE than 1,000 dragonfly sculptures can be seen at Doddington Hall’s gardens this month as a remembrance display by St Barnabas Hospice.

Designed by Doddington Hall’s head gardener, Jordan Wallhead the display on the Croquet Lawn features dragonflies dedicated by a St Barnabas supporter in memory of a loved one.

Teams at St Barnabas, Doddington and Lincoln College worked to place the handcrafted sculptures, which can be seen until Friday, September 25, 10am to 4pm.

The safety of visitors means they have to book through the Doddington Hall website. The display is included in general garden admission of £7.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and £19 for a family.

Supporters who have dedicated a dragonfly in memory of a loved one can get in free with a guest but will still need to book a

day to visit online.

Sam Waterer, Individual Giving Fundraiser at St Barnabas Hospice said: “I want to thank Doddington Hall for being so amazing to work with on this project. It will be our first event since the coronavirus pandemic began and we can’t wait to welcome our supporters back and give them a truly unique experience.

“As well as being able to visit the display during the day, we are also running several Twilight Tours as the sun sets over the gardens. A special thanks must go to Howell Thomas and the team at Lincoln College for helping us bring the display to life at this magical time of day.”

Twilight Tours will take place on Friday 18th and Friday 25th September. The dragonflies will be lit as a St Barnabas tour guide takes supporters through a short walk

of the gardens.

These tours cost £10 per adult and £5 per child and places must be booked on the St Barnabas website www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk/events

to book onto a tour.

Supporters will be able to place these dragonflies in their own gardens once the display has finished.

Volunteers needed for conservation projects EXPLORE the county’s beautiful countryside in search of hedgerows and historic farm buildings as part of two projects with the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service (LWCS).

Volunteers are needed to support a project based on discovering more about the hedgerows of Brookenby and Binbrook. They can also help with historical research as well as getting out on site and surveying hedges for their wildlife value and rich variety of species.

No experience is necessary as full training will be given and participants will be able to attend a varied programme of talks and events throughout the year.

David Rodger, project officer said: "This is a great opportunity for people who enjoy being outdoors and exploring the natural world.

We will be offering online training, and I'm sure those taking part will enjoy finding out more about the unique wildlife and historic landscape of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

"The information they discover will help add to the picture of what we know about the Wolds and will help us in our work to preserve and enhance this special area."

Hedgerows are an often overlooked but vital part of the landscape.

They also provide cover for a rich variety of plants and animals and act as wildlife corridors, allowing wildlife to move between habitats. Some hedges in the Wolds might be 400 years old or more and they could be evidence for old woodland, relic field systems or parish boundaries.

LWCS also need volunteers to take part in a survey of historic farm buildings in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of the Wolds.

There are many historic farm buildings and some are overlooked and have fallen into disrepair. LWCS want to increase the information available to businesses, architects and planners regarding the historic significance of Lincolnshire's farm buildings.

The body also wants to help find new economic uses for the buildings sympathetic to their historical significance.

Data gathered during 'on site' surveys will help to inform the renovation of redundant buildings that are an important contribution to the character of the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB. Full training will be given, from interpreting farmyard architecture to health and safety assessments. All materials needed will be provided free of charge.

Nature’s autumnal highlights Words and Pictures: Rachel Shaw Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust FOR me the start of lockdown was punctuated by the arrival of spring. On my walks in local green spaces, I anticipated seeing my first primrose and bluebell. I looked forward to hearing my first chiffchaff. Spring gave a sense of excitement in a difficult time.

Now there’s a change in the air; the fresh greens of spring have faded, acorns are looking plump. The arrival of autumn, and the winter that will follow, seems harder.

Nights are already drawing in.

Over the next few months, spending time in nature will be even more important.

But there is lots to look forward to that will encourage us outside.

The top three ‘firsts for autumn’ that I will be looking for are fly agarics, fieldfares and fiery colours.

All fungi have an air of mystery about them, seemingly appearing from nowhere.

But the fly agaric, with its red cap and white spots, is the classic mushroom of fairy tales. What we see is the fruiting

Ferocious prehistoric predator THERE was a buzz of wings above my head in my summer garden.

A dragonfly swooped in front of me.

I stop. He turned and headed back towards me. It felt like he was looking at me, checking me out, but decided I’m not food and passesd back over my head.

I turned to watch. He repeated his movements, flying up and down the same route. Sometimes he dipped down and almost stopped. He caught a midge or a gnat and ate it.

Dragonflies will eat their smaller prey items on the wing, not bothering to land.

Dragonflies can be tricky to identify, moving too fast to spot the salient features but the sunlight catches his wings. They are tinged with bronze which meant he was brown hawker dragonfly. Brown hawkers are one of the largest dragonflies in the UK with a wingspan of almost 10cm. To put that into context, the goldcrest, the UK’s smallest bird, has a wingspan of 14cm and a body length of just 9cm. This dragonfly is big but it’s nothing compared to fossil dragonflies.

Dragonflies were around long before dinosaurs roamed the earth. Threehundred million years ago, oxygen levels were higher allowing giant dragonflies to evolve. There are fossils of dragonflies with wingspans of 75cm. That’s a wingspan more like a kestrel than a goldcrest. They must have been formidable predators.

The brown hawker I watched is also a formidable predator. Dragonflies move each wing independently, giving them immense manoeuvrability. They can fly backwards, hover like a helicopter and perform hairpin turns. Their two huge eyes take up most of the head and 80% of the brain is devoted to dealing with this visual information.

They hunt down other flying insects with ease.

Brown hawkers can also fly many miles from water including into built up urban areas. Travelling far from the ponds where they spend their early years as aquatic, equally ferocious, larvae. But the adults will return lay their eggs. These ancient insects remain dependent on clean, unpolluted water.

Fieldfares are relatives of the more familiar, and year-round residents, mistle thrushes.

They have a similar spotted chest but with a slate-grey head and chestnut-brown wings. Fieldfares spend the summer in Scandinavia and north-west Russia. They stay there until the crop of berries runs out; then make the journey across the North Sea. The birds form large flocks and feast on the red and orange berries that fill the hedgerows. The berries are the first fiery colours to appear. Deciduous trees then join in. There’s some complex chemistry going on inside a leaf with a variety of coloured pigments. Before their leaves fall, the green chlorophyll breaks down to reveal yellow, orange and red pigments.

The intensity of colour varies between species and is influenced by the summer.

I’m excited to see what this autumn will bring.

My challenge is to see how close to home I can spot these autumnal highlights.

Liz Lucas - gardener for all seasons IN the past I have often found that when August and September arrive the garden is more or less over.

Usually, I have run out of money for plants by then, having spent it all at various summer shows, neglecting the autumn flowering plants in favour of pretty, summery ones.

Autumn plants often have bold, hot colours with strong stalks and large flowers. They shun dainty names; none of your aquilegias and gauras here. Autumn flowers favour stronger names such as chrysanthemum, rudbeckia, dahlia, and sedum, earthy names with attitude. These flowers mean business.

The lockdown meant that we could save our money this year and not spend it all on pretties from the garden shows, so I invested in more dahlias and sowed some rudbeckia earlier in the year. The dahlias have been going since June, if not earlier, but have come into their glorious stride in August. The rudbeckia, despite looking rather garish on the packet have livened the border no end.

I have never been a big fan of hot colours, rather leaning towards the more pastel side of things and traditional cottage garden styles. However, I have rather warmed to some of these more exotic colours.Yellows, oranges and reds from crocosmias have won me over, huge, sturdy sun flowers are gracing the borders and the dahlias, in gaudy colours are making the garden sing even on a dull day.

Many of these plants are undemanding withstanding both drought and wet periods. Dahlias need a little more care, but the others are tough cookies.

There are numerous crocosmia colours to choose from, all in the yellow, orange, red spectrum. Asters are cheerful and many now do not succumb to fungus problems. Japanese anemones are trouble free, will spread slowly and always give a good show.

Helianthus are cheerfully self reliant and small plants such as cyclamen, very reliable. Sedum too is a good, trustworthy plant, extending the season and feeding late bees.

If your garden is looking drab now, go out and spend the money you saved during lockdown on some late season flowers and give your garden a big, colourful boost.

Rock scene setting for ‘powerful’ novel AUTHOR Guy Mankowski’s fifth novel, Dead Rock Stars, has made people cry – for all the right reasons.

While the senior lecturer at the University of Lincoln wondered if this reaction was a good thing, the book, published by Darkstroke on September 14, received rave reviews from his literary peers.

The Man Booker Prize long-listed author Andrew Crumey said the novel ‘powerfully voices the concerns of a generation’ and the bestselling crime writer Ruth Dugdall called it a great read.

“Set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1990s London music scene, Dead Rock Stars is a mesmerising study of grief as well as a coming of age novel. I found myself immersed in the narratives of Jeff and Emma and marvelled at how the author captured both voices with such authenticity, particularly that of the self-destructive young woman.”

Guy decided he wanted to write when he was about 11, but the fear of not being about to make a living from writing led him to train as a psychologist - the experience gained gave him insight for his characters.

“I keep getting messages from people reading advanced copies saying ‘your novel made me cry for the first time in years.’ I’m not sure if that’s a good thing but it is something new to me.”

Guy started writing his first novel when he was 21 and although this became The Intimates published by Legend in 2011 it does reflect the naiveté of a young man, “There was an aspect of me exploring what I thought and hoped the adult world would be like in my writing. Then later novels like the crime thriller An Honest Deceit (Urbane 2017) - were more experienced reflections of the world as it actually is. I noticed that the older I got the more my writing became about the outside world and about trying to capture the voices of real people and tell their stories.

“Dead Rock Stars is very much in this vein. I wrote a scene - in which a young boy remembers watching his sister perform with her band in Camden just before she died, and when I posted it online I was overwhelmed with how positive the reaction was.

“I thought ‘well let’s see where this goes’ and this story came to me about a young man finding his way in the world through the diary his older sister left behind for him.”

Craig is the creative lead on the project: “We’re investing the same level of theatrical ingenuity as we would for our main house Christmas Shows, but by freeing ourselves from having to fill an auditorium to cover the costs of a large production budget and instead drawing on the expertise of our colleagues within University of Lincoln, we will have the flexibility to adapt the format to whatever restrictions on mass gatherings are in place this winter. We’re still in the early planning stages and exploring exactly what can be achieved with the technology but we expect A Distant Christmas to offer an appropriate response to these unique times.” www.lpac.co.uk

Inspirational city OUR front cover artist, Richard Briggs, has travelled widely collecting material for his work.

His time in Lincoln was obviously well spent as these images of the city illustrate.

After gaining a degree in Graphics and Illustration, Richard produced work for galleries across the South West while taking road trips in the UK and abroad.

He has also taught and this gave him more opportunities to see the world, but over the last few years he has been concentrating on a series of illustrations for prints and cards that make up Richard Briggs’ Britain.

He has visited Lincoln on several occasions to capture the city and was delighted when we asked if we could feature his image of Steep Hill on our front page.

“At a time when business and life in general can seem a bit flat we wanted something that captured the vibrancy of uphill Lincoln and the contribution the different small businesses make to that eclectic ambience and we thought Richard’s picture summed it up brilliantly,” said Indie Editor Amanda McSorley.

His work can be found in cathedrals, galleries, card and bookshops as well as the Houses of Parliament.

Anne’s wild about art

ANNE Wood creates colourful and expressive oil paintings at her Wild at Heart Studio in rural Lincolnshire.

Her images are everywhere in the timber cabin – from tiny oil studies on paper to larger canvasses hanging on the walls.

Anne is a serving committee member of the Lincolnshire Artists’ Society and The Nadin Group named after former Lincoln art teacher Gill Nadin, which aims to have two shows a year at the city’s Sam Scorer Gallery Anne exhibits her paintings in solo and group shows and has received four awards for her work. Examples can currently be seen in the LAS online exhibition Virtual Connections 2020 at lincolnshireartistssociety.com “My art story began twenty years ago after a visit to a painting exhibition. It inspired me to see what I could do myself but it was many years since my brief encounter with art school. I knew I had a long journey ahead so I taught myself daily to find what I wanted to say in my own paintings.

“Oil paint became my favourite medium, and I began to feel my way. My work turned looser and painterly. Bold and expressive paintings emerged and I got excited by the spontaneity and freedom that abstraction offered.

“In 2018, I included cold wax in my oil palette and it transformed the way I moved paint around. The oils and wax are smooth and luscious, and when they are sculpted with knives, rollers and scrapers, wonderful effects happen. I add layers and destroy parts by scraping back, which reveals the underneath, like archaeology. The painting begins to have a history.

The ‘wild’ in my work comes from making intuitive geometric and organic shapes. One shape can inspire the forming of another and my colour palette adds to the drama. It is a visual language of my working process.”

National nursing award for Lyndsay A MENTAL health nurse and ex-veteran from Leasingham has won Mental Health Nurse of the Year at the national British Journal of Nursing Awards Lyndsay Khan, is Team Manager for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s (LPFT) Veterans’ Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service.

She has been a mental health nurse for over 20 years, serving 14 years in Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service before joining LPFT. She has used her own experience to deliver a high level of care to veterans and their families transitioning back into the community.

Lyndsay has taken the lead on several projects to

raise awareness of mental health problems in the armed forces community and to ensure that veterans experiencing mental ill health access vital support.

“It feels unbelievable but utterly amazing to have won this award. Having been a mental health nurse for over 20 years, to get such recognition for doing a job I love is just fantastic. “ “I am very proud of my team, who are all extremely passionate about their work, and equally deserving of this accolade. However, getting the time to concentrate on producing the book was going to be a challenge as Rebecca is an actress and works with the elderly. Finding time between jobs made it difficult for her to create the illustrations wanted. But with lockdown in March Rebecca had time to focus and the illustrations quickly took shape.

Redhill Farm expands delivery service

THE delivery service Redhill Farm Free Range Pork trialled during lockdown is now a permanent fixture at the Farmshop in the Bail.

The home deliveries in Lincoln and the surrounding villages every Friday helped customers who were shielding, but is now open to everyone.

Jane Tomlinson of Redhill Farm explained they would also be delivering some tasty extras: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alongside the farmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own free range pork, grass fed lamb and beef, eggs and honey a grocery list of complementary produce ranging from Lincolnshire wine, rapeseed oil and cheese to stoneground flour, sourdough loaves, pasta and smoked fish can be added. App helps tackle modern slavery A NEW app provides guidance to farmers and workers to help tackle exploitation.

In a sector that often uses recruitment agencies or third-party labour providers, the Farm Work Welfare app gives farmers practical information on licensed labour providers, document verification and the rights of workers.

It will also provide information on employment rights in eight languages for the thousands of workers who come every year to help with the harvest of fruit and vegetables on UK farms.

The app has been set up in response to concerns about labour with the information processed by the Modern Slavery Helpline.

Cllr Barry Young, Chair of the Safer Lincolnshire Partnership, said: “The rural nature of our county, and the scale of our seasonal employment market, can put certain workers in Lincolnshire at risk of being taken advantage of.

“Criminal gangs can pose as legitimate labour providers and trick farmers into unwittingly hiring victims of modern slavery.

Workers themselves may be unaware of their employment rights and not recognise that they are being exploited.

“This new app puts a safeguard in place for workers and farmers, letting them know what they should expect and giving them an opportunity to report any concerns.

“I’m proud to say that Lincolnshire is one of safest places in the country to work. It is through joint innovative initiatives like this that we can continue to keep it so.”

Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Marc Jones, said: “Modern slavery and the exploitation of the vulnerable is a barbaric and despicable crime that is not just a criminal act but a violation of our humanity.”

Takeaway moves but it’s still Burton Road Chippy IT was an eventful last day for Burton Road Chippy at its home for the last 10 years.

It was a bitter-sweet occasion for owner Des Anastasiou (pictured) as he marked the chippy’s final shift at 169 Burton Road before it moves to new premises as he also celebrated his birthday and the birth of his grandson.

At the end of July Des and Lesley Graves announced that the restaurant side of their business would not be reopening due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they would continue to operate the takeaway side.

Their move to 119 Burton Road (next to Teleservice) should be completed at the end of September when they will reintroduce their gluten-free range.

“We want to thank all of our fantastic customers who visited our restaurant over the last 10 years and we are extremely sad that this is the way it has come to an end.”

Nettleham extra care housing scheme gets green light EXTRA care housing has been given the go ahead in Nettleham with a scheme designed to enable older people to live independently in their own homes.

"This is another vital facility with a growing number of older aged people and vulnerable adults in the county, providing accommodation for those who want to remain living independently but also have the option of on-site care,” said Cllr Patricia Bradwell, representative for Adult Care at Lincolnshire County Council.

"It means we can reinvest in preventative care, stopping people from falling ill, whilst promoting wellbeing and independence."

The council's Executive has agreed a £2m funding contribution towards the scheme. Working in partnership with Lace Housing Association, 43 units will be developed at the former Linelands building in Nettleham, with 20 units providing accommodation to residents who have additional care needs.

"This follows the 70 apartment Extra Care housing scheme at De Wint Court in Lincoln we have started in partnership with the City of Lincoln Council.

"We've allocated nearly £12m funding to develop Extra Care housing in the county which enhances quality of life and allows people to stay in their local communities and access services close to home."

Construction on the Nettleham scheme will start in spring 2021.

Knight moves to YMCA The move also saw departure of the award-winning chippy’s Quintessentially English Knight it sponsored during the 2017 Knight’s Trail. It was donated to the YMCA as were the furniture, crockery and cutlery from the restaurant.

YMCA chief executive Caroline Killeavy (pictured above) was on hand to receive the Knight on behalf of the charity. The trail help raised funds for the £1.6m Nomad Trust Centre on St Rumbold’s Street, Lincoln.

The post covid retail landscape JAMES BUTCHER, DIRECTOR, BANKS LONG & CO THE country continues to slowly get back to something like normality – or the ‘new normal’ as people are now calling it.

The Government is very keen to encourage more people to go back to working from their offices and other places of work as it is the larger regional city centres that continue to bear the brunt of the post-Covid slowdown.

The footfall of many business districts/city centres is a quarter of what it was preCovid, as people continue working from home and avoid public transport.

The impact on the retailers and leisure operators based in these locations has been catastrophic and it is difficult to see this situation changing anytime soon.

Many large businesses – such as Google have told staff that they will be working from home now until well into next year.

Fortunately, the picture in smaller regional centres like Lincoln is much more encouraging with retailers and restaurant operators reporting trading/footfall levels getting back to where they were before lockdown.

A big ‘driver’ for this has been the

Government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme which finished on Bank Holiday Monday. It is understood that HMRC paid for around 64 million meals during August – or one for every person in the UK. The aim of the scheme was to change people’s behaviour after the stay at home advice earlier in the Covid crisis, by encouraging them to eat out and visit city and town centres. Seeing the number of people around Lincoln and other towns and cities I have visited over the past month the scheme was clearly a big success.

The key thing now is that people continue to get out and visit city centres and support their local retail/restaurant businesses. The operators and retailers have a part to play in this too and can’t become complacent about the quality of what they offer customers.

As we were seeing before the lockdown people are now expecting more than a simple shopping experience – they can get that with far more convenience on the internet and the trends we were

seeing pre-Covid with the internet becoming ever more popular, continued unabated during the Covid lockdown.

Nonetheless I still do believe the High Street has an important part to play in the retail future of the country, as there remains a strong desire to visit city and town centres and the success of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme has illustrated this more than ever.

THE BOTTOM LINE

What led you in might not lead you out...

BY JAMES PINCHBECK, PARTNER THE majority of businesses operating pre Covid-19, did so with clarity of vision, a sense of purpose and direction of travel.

Established business models, decision making, working practices and workforce management ensured that businesses were able to service customer demands and meet the needs of all stakeholders.

Businesses were able to trade with some certainty, whilst at the same time, had some level of resilience to deal with the impact of changes whether unique to them or arising from government policy. Overall, this was the norm.

What has changed? There is much talk about the new normal and perhaps whilst no one really can clearly define or describe it, many will have their own thoughts on what it is, looks or feels like.

One thing is certain - the world of business has changed in many ways, whether it is how we work, where we work or even when we work. Even our attitudes to work have seemingly changed.

For many, how customers are serviced and what they are offered has changed.

However, the big challenge comes as we start to think about the lasting changes the pandemic has and continues to have on our lives and the way businesses operate.

Certainly, the impact and length of lockdown has been so significant that few, if any, businesses should think that things will return to what they were before.

As businesses trade through their lifecycle, invariably they will require different leadership styles and models to deal with the opportunities and challenges they face. Following such a significant change, organisations will now need to consider whether their leadership, strategic thinking and decision making is still fit for purpose.

In the new norm or new order there is likely to be a far greater need for more collaborative leadership with less hierarchical structures.

Certainly, few business leaders singularly possess the skills or qualities to deal with what is increasingly a Vuca world – one which is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.

In such a dynamic environment with such impacting change, there is a real need for business leaders with visionary outlooks, perhaps a different skill set to those charged

with managing the status quo.

Business leaders will also need to be more empathetic, having a greater appreciation and understanding of the needs of its employees, with compassion for both collective and individual circumstances.

Ironically in a world where we may feel overloaded with communication, there is a real need for business leaders with effective communication skills to ensure employees and all stakeholders have clear and concise awareness and understanding of the direction of travel and changes.

To be truly effective, such communication has to be two way, with leaders listening to and engaging with stakeholders and not just communicating to them.

Effective communication will also be key in helping to create a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose and organisational culture, especially within those businesses where staff are working remotely.

As we have seen over the last few months with the government’s handling of the pandemic, sometimes decisions or actions don’t work out as intended. The same is often the case in business.

Perhaps now more than ever, business leaders need to demonstrate humility and integrity in such an event; an approach that should at least earn the trust and respect of employees and other stakeholders.

We face challenging times ahead, which will certainly call on the skills, resolve and resilience of those running businesses, for what is likely to be more of marathon than a sprint.

SOTA Living take last unit in trade park’s first phase SOTA Living is moving to Bishops Trade Park off Lincoln’s Outer Circle Road where the established kitchen design and installation business will offer fitted bedrooms.

SOTA stands for State of The Art and the move from the LN6 area means the last unit of phase one of the site is under offer for developer Padley.

It believes the site could create around 450 jobs when finished and it is now pressing ahead with the planning application to start Phase Two. SOTA Living is headed by directors Philip Ardron and his sons Rick and Tom. “We had a strong start to the year and we knew we needed more space. The fact that we have had the confidence to secure larger premises to meet our future aspirations, during the Coronavirus pandemic, sends out a positive message to potential customers, ” said Philip.

Tom added: “We are family-run and we specialise in the design, supply and installation of German-made kitchens. Having been experienced fitters for 12 years, we are delighted that our move will also give-us the room to design, showcase our work and go on to offer fitted bedrooms.”

SOTA is due to move to Bishops Trade Park in early autumn and create a role for a further designer.

Rick added: “We have been watching how the Outer Circle Road area has been diversifying in recent months and attracting more national, regional and local businesses. We are confident that this is the ideal home for our growing business.”

Commercial Director Richard Padley of the developers and chartered surveyor Banks Long & Co Director William Wall explained the first phase of the site had proved especially popular with trade counter operators The next phase will include light industrial units.

“We embarked on this speculative development after noticing a rise in the number of retailers and service businesses moving into this increasingly vibrant part of Lincoln and following progress on the construction of the city’s important Eastern Bypass,” said Richard.

“Our confidence has been rewarded, despite delays to the Bypass along with the challenges experienced by businesses of all sizes during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. We are absolutely delighted with the popularity of the trade park.

Free Instagram courses available for businesses A FULLY-funded online Instagram course is being offered to encourage tourism businesses to develop their online marketing skills.

Business Lincolnshire and Visit Lincoln do not wan t local ventures to miss out on the potential of one billion active Instagram users.

The Greater Lincolnshire Visitor Economy is currently estimated to be worth over £2.24bn per annum and supports over 39,000 jobs. One of Lincolnshire County Council’s and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP’s priorities is to grow the visitor

Taking advantage of user-generated content is part of the initiative to engage with visitors employing photos, videos and other tools to promote the county’s tourism sector.

Samantha Harrison Head of Economic Development and Regeneration at Lincolnshire County Council explained: “Social distancing and restrictions have meant that for many, the only source of engagement with customers has been digital. In response to this a fully-funded course has been created to teach businesses how to use the social media platform Instagram.”

Visit Lincoln is keen to take usergenerated content to a new level and give visitors around the world the ability to actually book inspirational places and activities. Marketing – especially digital marketing - will be crucial to the recovery

and relaunch of Greater Lincolnshire’s tourism industry.

Tourism businesses often do not have the time to attend workshops, so Business Lincolnshire will be sharing this content online in the form of e-learning bundles, and podcasts to encourage businesses to participate.

Charlotte Goy, CEO of Visit Lincoln said: ‘”We have been using Instagram in our digital markets for years and wanted to share the impact and reach it can have with tourism businesses.

UTC students celebrate ‘excellent’ results STUDENTS at Lincoln University Technical College (UTC) have achieved ‘excellent’ results at A Level and GSCE in the school’s specialist subjects; engineering, maths, science and technology.

UTC students achieved a 100% A Level pass rate with 50% of results graded from A*-B. Roughly half of the students in the sixth form study a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering, equivalent to 3 A Levels, and 100% of students on this course passed with 60% achieving a distinction grade.

“This has been a very difficult year for us all but particularly for examination year students. Therefore, we are particularly pleased that despite numerous challenges our students have achieved excellent and very well-deserved A and GCSE Level results.” said the Principal John Morrison.

“I am very confident that the students who aspire to attend university will have achieved the grades needed to be accepted onto their preferred course, despite the unusual circumstances.

Both the students and the teaching team have worked very hard, and we look forward to seeing our students succeed in the next stage of their education and career.”

Jay Wyatt-Jones achieved AAAA* in chemistry, physics, biology and maths. He will begin a four-year degree programme in Physics MPhys, BSc at the University of Leeds in September. Jay said: “I’m so happy to have achieved results that will allow me to take the next step on my dream career path. I’ve studied at the UTC for the last four years, and the specialist focus on science and maths has allowed me to thrive in the subjects that are most important to me.”

81% of UTC GCSE students achieved between a grade 4-9 in both English and maths. 89% of students passed their specialist engineering qualifications, where the grades awarded were based on coursework completed before the lockdown.

UTC A Level results were strong even before the government’s Uturn. However, following the welcome decision to honour centre assessed grades several UTC students have seen an increase, with 64% of all students achieving A*-B and 86% achieving A*-C. “We are delighted that many of our year 11 students have chosen to remain at the UTC to continue their studies in our sixth form, and also look forward to welcoming new students in September.”

UTC student Edward Pitts-Drake (pictured top) achieved a combination of grade 8s and 9s in his GCSEs. He plans to continue at the UTC studying A Levels in maths, physics, chemistry and biology. Edward said:“I’m absolutely ecstatic with my grades. Moving to the UTC in year 10 was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I can’t thank my teachers enough for their support.”

Head happy students got deserved results EXAM celebrations scored top marks for both A’Level and GSCE students at Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School.
