Minster’s new mission AS the new Headmistress of Lincoln Minster School appointed during the COVID-19 pandemic - I’m proud to be driving the school’s renewed vision and ambition for the future.

Lincoln Minster School was founded in 1996 but has roots stretching back to 1265. It is now a flourishing, modern, forwardlooking school for students aged four-18.

We welcome day and boarding pupils from the local area and from further afield, joined by students from Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa.

Together, every day, we are building a school ethos that is welcoming, inclusive, international-minded and unprejudiced.

We are building a community-focused, global vision, where our pupils truly have the opportunity to shape the world around them and solve the problems of tomorrow.

Building aspiration and ambition is the daily work of the school both inside and beyond the classroom; we believe that the breadth of opportunity offered at Lincoln Minster offers each child the chance to find their

unique spark. For many, this will come through the academic curriculum and the academic enrichment activities that take place every day, throughout the school.

Opportunities to develop individual academic interests come via the lively SixthForm Extended Project Qualification, our Gifted and Talented programme and the many academic societies, debating and public speaking activities and musical, dramatic and artistic clubs.

There is a fantastically diverse sporting programme at Lincoln Minster School, truly something for everyone to enjoy, and elite coaching pathways are available for our top players.

We are particularly proud of the Minster’s Squash tradition: this year we were thrilled that our KS3 girls won the National

School’s Squash championships, with our KS4 girls winning the Plate tournament and our senior boys being placed at no. 8, nationally.

Some of our most senior pupils study with us part-time while attending the Lincoln City Football Club Academy and we are currently developing a new elite golfing programme with Woodhall Spa due to launch in September. A good number of our students have been selected to play for local club and county teams in all the major sports.

After the challenges of the Coronavirus years, there is a great opportunity for a fresh start. At Lincoln Minster, part of our own fresh start is to address and talk about what is so often referred to as the worldwide adolescent mental health crisis.

Engaging wellbeing education is provided for all our students, plus access to appropriate further support is offered when necessary.

The best approach is a balanced and open one, and one of the great advantages of having relatively small class sizes is that we really get to know each student and can support them effectively.

Lincoln Minster School is already well known for the standard of its Music, Art and Drama: our facilities for creative education are world-class and are

especially to be treasured when the national picture is that such subjects are being squeezed. The next steps in the school’s development will take account of our position at the heart of a county and city that is at the cutting edge of technology, as we create an ambitious plan for a new Science and Technology centre within our historic campus. This will be a wonderful resource for our own students, encouraging creative research and exploration, but will also benefit the wider community; we will be drawing in some prominent local institutions to partner with us in our ambitious ideas.

Catch 22 of lastminute.com Chartered Certified Accountants

I’VE just tried to check whether lastminute.com has entered the Oxford dictionary along with all those other phrases now in common parlance.

Things added include examples such as anti vaxxer (recently popularised by C­19 vaccination protestor), beast mode (turning into an animal on TV or in video game) or brown noser or nosing – the latter doesn’t really need explaining, but I can’t believe the Oxford compilers only added it last September.

Anyway, I couldn’t find lastminute.com, which surprised me as it’s certainly become part of the vernacular. I hear people use it all the time in a variety of ways for something organised late, hastily, or shambolically as in ‘it looked like it has

been set up lastminute.com’. As the idea behind the holiday company is to offer late deal breaks so we can get away somewhere to relax and recharge I don’t suppose the people behind LM.C are too happy about how it has been shanghaied.

But I think its more than just a hijacked phrase ­ it’s also become an attitude since the advent of the Coronavirus.

And it’s a frame of mind that I would describe as insidious.

In our many conversations with event organisers in and around the city we’ve talked a great deal about the lastminute.com mentality.

It’s something that is worrying for us all as people leave it until the last minute (obvs) to book shows, meals, holidays...anything.

One reason given was that people are not booking things because they always get cancelled ­ well duh!

Just before going to press the guys from Upstaged told us that they’d been forced to cancel the Imp on the Green event.

They are a great bunch and we know how hard they’d worked. They had even taken into account the current pervasiveness of lastminute.com, but promoters and artists got twitchy and a really hard decision had to be made.

It’s a salutary lesson.

I’ll go back to an old idiom – use it or lose it as it could be your last chance.

Lincolnshire Show back in business AFTER an absence of two years the Lincolnshire Show will return on Wednesday-Thursday, June 22-23.

Preparations are well underway for this year’s event at the Lincolnshire Showground, which will celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, taking on a royal purple colour scheme.

The Showground will be dressed in colourful bunting with stands taking on royal decorative themes to create a street party across the Showground.

More than 60,000 visitors are expected across the two days and the show will celebrate the very best Lincolnshire has to offer across various zones.

New for 2022 the Atkinson Action Horses will grace the Main Ring. They often featured in major TV and film productions and visitors will be treated to a high-energy, breath-taking stunt show.

The Lincolnshire Kitchen will host live cookery demonstrations from top local chefs and producers. Meanwhile, the Aviation Zone celebrates Lincolnshire’s rich aviation heritage, along with plenty for younger visitors to see, make and do in the Discovery, Activity and Kids Zones.

“We are extremely excited for the return of the greatest show of all – the Lincolnshire Show,” said Showground chief executive Jayne Southall.

We’re really proud to celebrate the best of Lincolnshire and its great heritage. The show is a testament to the fantastic trade, talent and produce that the county has to offer, and we love being able to showcase that in one place. 2022 is going to be a phenomenal year and we can’t wait to reveal even more special surprises that we’ve got up our sleeves.”

The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, which organises the show was formed back in 1869 and staged its first event in July of that year featuring poultry, pigeons, seeds and roots.

Society president Christopher Bourn said the event was now one of the best true agricultural county shows in the country.

“It enables the best in the county to showcase their outstanding products and produce, which goes to make Lincolnshire such a great prime agricultural place to live and work.”

It’s time to go yellow ST Barnabas Hospice is celebrating 40 years of caring for people in Lincolnshire From very humble beginnings of three nurses, with a vision to improve end of life care in Lincolnshire in 1982 - to what has become one of the region’s biggest charities supporting more than 10,500 people each year.

The team behind St Barnabas will make this year one to remember with a bursting list of events, appeals and activities to get involved in and celebrate the incredible achievements of the people who have made the last four decades happen.

DR SAMEER GUPTA MBBS, MD, FRCA FFPMRCA (PAIN) CONSULTANT IN PAIN MANAGEMENT AND ANAESTHESIA A SMALL amount of pain is experienced by a large proportion of the population but not all sufferers seek treatment from a specialist.

It is the reaction, level of pain and individual circumstances which drive people to ask for medical advice.

The DRG Health Clinic in Doncaster specialises in pain management where the expert team is often asked: “Why can’t I be pain free?”

Pain is a useful sensation to have, part of the evolutionary process to protect the species. It is part of a complex process in the brain for self-preservation – it tells us something is wrong through illness or injury so we can prevent or repair damage to our bodies.

The pain centre in the brain is connected to various other centres which deal with emotions, memory, sleep (internal body clock) behaviour (physical) or intelligence. Therefore once pain is felt these all can be affected and need treatment.

Pain is an experience and all experiences are registered as a memory. The more frequent the experiences are the more easily those memories come to the fore - whether good or bad.

Unfortunately, pain is associated with bad memories. A combination of pain, immobility and mood issues can affect the quality of life. It may result in poor sleep, inability to do physical work, issues with careers, relationships and effect mood/emotions. Reversing the effects of pain can be a challenge, however, there are treatments available including physiotherapy, psychotherapy, medications and pain injections and bespoke combinations of these options.

Key to the treatment of pain is improving mobility (physiotherapist) and managing bad experiences by psychotherapy.

There are also specific pain treatments available like lignocaine infusion for fibromyalgia, botulinum toxin/nerve blocks for migraines, nerve blocks/epidurals for sciatica pain, radiofrequency ablation for back pain.

Most of my patients have been in pain for many months or years.

My priority is to improve the quality of life by improving pain perception, sleep, mobility and possibly mood.

It is important to know that 30% to 50% pain relief is considered gold standard for a good response to a treatment.

The open day will feature taster sessions across Tennis, Squash and Bowls with the friendly coaching team and members.

All visitors need to do is turn up in sports clothing and trainers to have a go.

“We are very lucky to have a historic sports club with incredible facilities right in the centre of Lincoln. However, many people don’t know we are here or that they would be welcome to join.

We hope that the open day will encourage people to come and have a go at one or all of our three sports and we look forward to welcoming them to the club,” said President Simon Jackson.

Set in the historic Cathedral Quarter off Langworthgate for more than 120 years Eastgate Club has welcomed participants of all ages, experience and ability and has a thriving social side for playing and non-playing members.

Food, tea and coffee will be available and visitors will be able to see the exciting plans for the clubhouse refurbishment project.

Tennis There are eight all-weather courts, floodlit for evening/winter play. The club hosts LTA competitions and has a popular and encouraging team of coaches to support beginners, intermediates and our competitive teams.

A thriving tennis programme includes junior, beginners, ladies and mixed social sessions in a lovely, welcoming setting. It is known as a friendly club to new members, providing ample opportunities to play for fun and socialise.

Parent Alienation and the Law

BY ESME HOBBS CHILDREN LAW, TRAINEE SOLICITOR IF you’re going through a divorce or separation, things often get stressful. Especially when kids are involved.

If one parent negatively influences a child’s view of the other parent, it could affect them for the rest of their life. This is called Parental Alienation.

It often occurs during a high conflict divorce or separation. It happens when one parent uses strategies to distance a child, or children from the other parent.

Alienating behaviours often include; l Talking negatively or telling lies about the other parent l Encouraging the child to be disrespectful or defiant towards the other parent l Blaming the other parent for the breakup l Manipulating a child to make them believe the other parent is untrustworthy or dangerous An example of parental alienation might be when the mother tells her child their dad doesn’t love them. Or a father tells a child that mummy prefers her new family.

If parental alienation goes unchallenged, it could result in a full breakdown of the relationship. A consequence of this might be that one parent gets completely excluded from the child’s life.

What to do if you’re being Alienated Unfortunately, there is no law in the UK for dealing with parental alienation. That said, family courts can and will step in when a child’s welfare suffers as a result.

There’s a presumption that it’s in a child’s best interest to have a positive relationship with both parents - unless there are safeguarding issues.

If you think your child is a victim of Parental Alienation seek legal advice as soon as possible as you do have options.

A Child Arrangements Order will let you spend time with your child or for your child to live with you.

A Prohibited Steps Order will prevent the other parent moving, changing your child’s school or name without your consent.

The court could issue a Family Assistance order for Cafcass (Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service) or a local authority to work with the family if both parents agree.

A child may be party to the court proceedings in some cases and will be allocated a guardian. who will instruct a solicitor to put forward what they believe is in the children’s best interests.

Significant concerns may lead to care proceedings.

THE safe arrival of a foal has brought a ray of sunshine to Bransby Horses and the lives of five Welsh ponies taken in by the charity.

The colt Cobalt, was born overnight on March 28 to mum, Periwinkle. Mare and foal are doing well.

The five ponies came to Bransby as part of a large-scale rescue operation involving a number of leading equine charities. There were 40 ponies rescued in total with some going to World Horse Welfare - who led the rescue effort - the Blue Cross and HAPPA, following the sudden death of their owner.

Another two of the mares at Bransby Horses are also pregnant and expected to give birth imminently.

The rescues are at the Animal Reception Centre (ARC) and Team Leader Lauren said: “Periwinkle is being an amazing mother – she strikes the perfect balance between being protective but, also being very happy to let us handle her baby.

“She wasn’t producing a lot of milk in the beginning but fingers crossed feeding is now going well for them both.

“Cobalt’s bloods showed he has a good level of antibodies which means he got plenty of colostrum.”

Foals are born with no infection-fighting antibodies in their blood and need colostrum.

The mare produces these antibodies and transfers them through colostrum (first milk) to protect the foal from bacteria and viruses.

Lauren added: “Cobalt’s confidence is growing day by day and he loves scratches and playing with our sweeping brush when we are tidying up.”

Bongo, the only male pony in the herd, has shown a strong fear of men since he has

been with us and is learning to overcome this with regular socialisation sessions with resident farrier, Scott.

Bongo has now been castrated so he can live safely with other ponies.

Ivory, or ‘Aunty Ivory’ as she is now called, is a mare living with Periwinkle and Cobalt.

Lauren said: “She is quite put-out with the new arrival getting lots of attention but we are making sure she doesn’t feel forgotten about completely. She was caught snoozing in the straw with the foal so she must like him a little bit, despite her ignoring his attempts to play.”

Auburn, also believed to be heavily in foal, had severe skin problems when she arrived but has shown some improvement and her handling is progressing well.

“Auburn will do just about anything for food so she has been easy to win over.”

Tawny is also believed to be pregnant and is the eldest of the mares. She has been the biggest handling challenge of the group.

“It’s been a really long process to gain her trust but we are heading in the right direction.”

Currently none of the ponies are on view to the public but the charity hopes in time this will change.

The usual occupiers of this feature, the donkey herds, however, have been moved from their winter housing and can now be seen by visitors.

Should I get a rabbit?

As with any pet, a rabbit is a commitment. Have a think about what you want out of your pet; do you want something you can spend a short amount of time with in the evening, does not cost a lot to feed or keep, is happy to be picked up all the time by young children? Probably not a rabbit then.

Rabbits are intelligent, social animals which enjoy having time spent with them, but do not necessarily enjoy being picked up and can be an expense when it comes to feeding.

If you can give them the time and attention, they need they are extremely rewarding but are a commitment for six to 10 years so give it some thought.

Do rabbits like to live with other rabbits?

In short, yes. Rabbits are social animals, living in large warrens with several close-knit family groups. In captivity, rabbits are happiest in small groups or pairs. In a small number of situations, a human carer can pair bond with a rabbit, but it takes a lot of time and devotion for the majority of us, we really cannot fulfil all a rabbit’s innate social requirements and time commitments.

Would a guinea pig make a good friend?

Guinea pigs do not understand the more subtle social cues of rabbits, so although they can live alongside them, there would always be that gap in their relationship. Best to stick with rabbits.

What do I need to feed my rabbits?

Rabbits are herbivores and in addition to rabbit nuggets and veg need a substantial quantity of fibre in their diet. This comes in the form of grass and hay and is essential to keep their guts and their teeth in good shape.

The basic rule of thumb for how much to feed your rabbit is below in this helpful reference from Supreme pet foods.: 75% grass or hay, 15% leafy greens, 5% rabbit nuggets and 5% (or less!) treats.

Is it important to have a garden?

It is nice for a rabbit to be able to spend time outside, but not having a garden isn't a deal-breaker. A lot of rabbits can be trained to walk in a harness and go for little walks, and exercise around the house is playful fun too.

How much time do I need to spend with my rabbit?

As much as possible. Rabbits are more intelligent and sociable than we have given them credit for in the past.

The more time you spend with them the more rewarding the time will be. Rabbits can learn their names, can be taught tricks, and a well socialised rabbit will love to chill with you on the sofa of an evening or sit by your feet as you work from home! Give them the same attention as you would a dog or a cat and you will see what I mean.

Can my rabbit be house trained?

Yes, rabbits are inherently clean animals. They tend to use dedicated toileting areas and can easily be trained to toilet in a litter tray.

Should I get my rabbit vaccinated?

Yes, viral haemorrhagic disease and myxomatosis are all too common and usually fatal in unvaccinated bunnies. They can spread quickly through contact with other rabbits and through insects, so even house rabbits are not risk-free. Keep your friend safe and get them vaccinated.

Volunteers pick leek crop to prevent waste DOZENS of volunteers have hand-pulled, topped and tailed around 3,000kg of surplus leeks at a Lincolnshire farm – helping to reduce waste, combat food poverty and support farmers Organised by members of Lions Club International the initiative – supported by law firm Shakespeare Martineau – was the first of the year in conjunction with The Gleaning Network, which encourages people across the country to pick surplus crops to shrink farm-level food waste.

After being picked in Coningsby, the leeks were placed in crates and distributed to frontline charities and local groups – such as school breakfast clubs, older people’s lunch clubs, homeless shelters, food banks and community cafes – via FareShare’s regional centres.

national hunger officer, formed the Lions Gleaning Hub two years ago. Since then, more than 38 tonnes of food from eight counties – including Lincolnshire – have been rescued.

“Last year, we were inundated with pumpkins as they are getting more popular and we had opportunities with around a dozen farms,” said Chris. “ While we managed to help most of them, the waste was still staggering. All those who volunteer for us have been shocked by the quality and quantity of food available on the farms we have managed to engage with and the variety of reasons for this surplus.

“While food bank, community fridges and soup kitchens are wellsupported, awareness of food waste generally is still not widely appreciated.

“It is important for people to realise that the food we are picking is fresh, nutritious and delicious. It isn’t waste – it is surplus and our aim is to stop it from becoming waste.”

As part of its responsible business strategy, Shakespeare Martineau is aiming to deliver 10,000 volunteering hours in 2022 and its staff were among the volunteers rescuing the leeks.

Jennie Wheildon, legal director specialising in agricultural property law, said: “It is estimated that £1.2 billion’s worth of food is wasted each year, “Gleaning reduces food waste on farms and increases the supply of fresh food to those in need.

“We are delighted to have supported the Lions Gleaning Hub with its first pick of the year and are looking forward to helping out with more gleaning over the next 12 months.”

Year-long research project to help secure tourism development TOURISM experts at Visit Lincoln have started a 12-month research programme with thousands of visitors, residents, students and business owners across Greater Lincolnshire and England.

The results will be used to develop future plans and shape Lincolnshire’s ‘Levelling Up’ agenda for the county’s £2.4bn visitor economy.

Data is being collected over the next 12 months, making sure that all seasons across the year will be covered. Research also includes an online survey to hundreds of visitors and non-visitors, and consultation with over 500 businesses plus detailed faceto-face focus groups.

Charlotte Goy Chief Executive (pictured) explained the work would be the first-time business owners and leaders will be able to see the county ‘through the eyes of a visitor’ and insights will include who visitors are, where they are coming from, what are their motivations to visit, what their stay and spend are, and crucially what would persuade them to stay longer in Lincolnshire, make a return trip and support local businesses.

“To have real impact we need to understand consumer sentiment and the Greater Lincolnshire visitor economy sector in depth”, said Charlotte. “This will give us post-covid insight into what the recovery needs are in Lincolnshire and Rutland, and it will enable businesses, operators and local authorities to make sound, data-led decisions as they navigate new policies through Levelling Up and Shared Prosperity funding.

“We’re proud to be leading the way and this shows the type of work that we will be doing as the countywide DMO called Destination Lincolnshire.

“The intelligence will inform our strategy across destination marketing, accelerate decision making and lay the foundations for impactful collaboration as Visit Lincoln evolves into Destination Lincolnshire.

“The research will be fundamental in contributing to Lincolnshire’s progress across the visitor economy and inward investment opportunities – and echoes national best practice outlined by Visit England and DCMS in the National Tourism Recovery Plan released last year.”

Pilot scheme to improve mealtimes for secondary students TICKY NADAL JOINT CO-ORDINATOR LINCOLNSHIRE FOOD PARTNERSHIP INFANT and Junior school meal providers, whether in house or external caterers, have been supported over the last decade by a variety of effective schemes helping them to deliver healthier and more nutritious lunchtime meals.

So what about our secondary schools?

From Year 7 onwards there is a drastic change in the time allowed for food consumption and the way in which children actually consume their food. This is not a new trend but it should not be a continuing one.

Half an hour of break between lessons. Nowhere to sit down.

Lunch queues too long. Pushed out of the queue. No time to socialise. Eating a packed lunch standing up. Dropping half the sandwich on the playground.

These are daily challenges for our secondary school children.

Of course, the content of the food itself must be carefully considered. Even so we urgently need to allow our kids the time to slow down, sit down, digest, contemplate and appreciate the food they are consuming.

The educational and social challenges that children face at secondary school are enough. Could we be bold enough to strive for a lunch hour or even more than an hour that allows really good food, meaning every meal is nutritious, served to the children as it would be at the family table. This has happened in the past. Why should it not happen again?

Lincolnshire County Council has laid the groundwork through a really successful Holiday Food and Activities program in the school breaks.

This has led to Lincolnshire being chosen as part of a pilot looking at the standards of school food. The Food Standards Agency will be working with the Department For Education to establish new standards for school food. These standards will eventually be rolled out across the country.

We are hopeful that this is an opportunity to implement real change in the school lunch break.

Breakfast to go Cheesy apple and spinach egg muffins NURTIONIST, avid foodie and best-selling author, Rhiannon Lambert, is working with British Lion eggs to show how the humble egg can form the basis of meals packed full of goodness but also easy and delicious.

Rhiannon says: “Eggs are a bit like nature’s multivitamin – naturally rich in vitamin D, B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B12, iodine, selenium and contain several other essential dietary vitamins and minerals. They are also a source of Omega3 fatty acids.

“The nutrition from eggs combines with cheese, apple and spinach in these moreish muffins to add calcium, vitamin C and fibre for a cracking breakfast that you can make ahead and eat on the run.”

Serves 6, Prep 8mins, Cook 10mins.

Ingredients 2 spring onions, trimmed 1 small apple, quartered and cored 1 tbsp olive oil 100g frozen spinach pellets, thawed slightly 50g Cheddar cheese, grated 4 medium British Lion eggs Salt and ground black pepper Method Preheat the oven to 200C / Fan 180C / Gas Mark 6. Lightly oil 6-cup muffin pan and place on baking tray.

Finely chop the onions and cut the apple into small cubes.

Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, add the onion and apple, sauté for three minutes until soft.

Crumble the frozen spinach into the pan and cook until it has thawed but is not hot. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in half the cheese and season to taste.

Divide the mixture on muffin tray.

Crack the eggs into a jug and beat with a fork until smooth the pour over the apple mix and sprinkle over the remaining cheese.

Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the eggs are golden and set. Remove from the oven and allow the muffins to cool slightly before removing from the tin.

Serve warm or cold scattered with spring onions.

Exhibition shines new light on county’s flora Until August 29, Friday to Monday 10am-4pm Museum of Lincolnshire Life, free COLOMBIAN artist Esteban Peña Parga has been expanding his creative presence in Lincoln in partnership with the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.

Selected as the museum’s artist-in-residence for the ongoing Our Patch of Earth project, Esteban has been working in the new Gatehouse Gallery on an exhibition that explores our relationship with the natural environment and Lincolnshire’s wildflowers.

Since the 1930s the UK has lost 97% of its wildflower meadows and each of Esteban’s chosen themes and techniques is aimed at raising awareness about the relationship between wildflowers and the country’s environmental history and health.

Esteban’s longstanding interest is in painting light waves normally invisible to the naked eye but when revealed tell us more about the subjects. Using special lighting and camera filters, Esteban has photographed and painted wildflowers under ultraviolet, infrared and visible light.

“The results reveal shimmering speckles of nectar and pollen dotted across petals and leaves and concentrated more densely in the central carpels of each flower. Bees see in ultraviolet light and so a flower’s luminescent nectar is designed to sparkle so that they can easily see it and are attracted to the flower.,” said Esteban.

A second collection comprises endangered wildflowers painted using the silhouette technique.

Each specimen has been chosen because of the finely balanced interplay between humans and nature that it needs to thrive.

The artist’s final group of works was inspired by his meetings with the Sir Joseph Banks Society. This series pays homage to Sarah Bate, mother of Lincolnshire’s world-famous botanist and founding father of Kew Gardens.

Sarah pricked the edges illustrations in Gerard’s Herball (1597) using a pin to use the images as a tracing guide for her embroidery work.

Esteban has recreated her pin-prick guides in parchment paper and lit each work to give the illusion of looking at the pieces under candlelight.

The exhibition runs alongside items chosen by Esteban from the museum’s collections while researching Lincolnshire’s wildflowers.

Creative Freedom on show DOMESTIC abuse charity EDAN Lincs’ can finally stage its Creative Freedom art exhibition in the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral after it was delayed by Coronavirus restrictions.

Sponsored by Ringrose Law the exhibition will run from June 6-12 and features work from three different sources all connected to EDAN Lincs.

Over 30 female artists from up and down the country spent time during lock-down to create artwork for the EDAN Lincs refuges making them more welcoming and comforting environments for those escaping domestic abuse.

The second group of artists came from our very own refuges. Commissioned by the Collection museum and under the guidance of artist Nadya Monfrinoli, they created posters promoting the theme of empowering women.

Finally, a group of Lincolnshire quilters created a quilt that reflected their experiences of the Covid pandemic in 2020. Their 2020 Reflections quilt has been used to raise funds over the past 12 months for the charity To access this exhibition at the Chapter House visitors will need to go through the Cathedral.

After a turbulent few years when its future was in doubt members of the Usher Gallery Trust want the talents of local artists to underline the fact it is very much back in the business of displaying art.

“After a protracted disruption to real creative expression it’s time to bring art back out of isolation so that it can be shared and celebrated once again,” said the Trust, which is running the exhibition in conjunction with Lincolnshire County Council.

Works can be submitted by any county resident and the medium can be 2D, such as paintings, drawings or photography, but no video or 3D in any medium for example sculptures, ceramics or assemblages.

Up to three images in JPEG format of the art work should be submitted by June 30.

Exploring landscape of mental health Until May 15, The Constant Ripple by Tom Heath, Sam Scorer Gallery TOM Heath (1985-2012) enjoyed painting and writing. He also enjoyed drumming, reading, learning, football – especially the commentary which made him laugh - and having fun with his many wonderful friends.

Kind, gentle, thoughtful and charming, Tom wasn’t bothered about ‘stuff ’ but was more interested in people and ideas, giving you his full attention when you spoke with him. He loved talking about life’s big questions.

After developing depression, Tom took his own life in 2012.

Following Tom’s death, his family wanted to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing. With this in mind, the idea for the exhibition, The Constant Ripple, was developed.

It will feature his art, poerty and other writing, which Tom’s family describe as often being quirky and funny.

As well as highlighting mental health issues , the exhibition will also raise funds for suicide prevention.

Massive Wagons roll in for rock extravaganza THERE’S one hell of a line up for the Call of Wild Festival at Lincolnshire Showground over the weekend of May 19-22.

Bez - Happy Mondays IT’S set to be a happy Saturday when Bez comes to Lincoln’s The Drill later this month.

No-one was more sur prised by his fame than Bez himself, but true to his happy-go-lucky stance on life (that once saw him living in a cave in Morocco for three weeks), Mark Berry has made the most of his renown.

And he’ll be making the most of his time on stage at The Drill on Saturday, May 21.

“Bez is from the band Happy Mondays and that’s where he made his fame. He is also quite a big TV personality, being on shows such as Gogglebox, Dancing on Ice and things like that.” explained Lee Byrne, Events and Entertainment Manager at The Drill.

Bez the percussionist, dancer and DJ is heading to Lincoln with his son Arlo for a special DJ set. Arlo hits the decks while Bez treats the audience to his famous moves.

“He plays a lot of ‘Madchester’ stuff, so expect to hear things like Happy Mondays, Oasis and The Stone Roses,” added Lee. “Anyone who has been brought up in the Manchester area or was big into The Hacienda, it’s the perfect show for them,” The Hacienda night club and music venue in became famous during the Madchester years of the 1980s-90s and is synonymous with the Happy Mondays’.

AGNES J CARMEN

Agnes’ brave and bold art POLISH born artist Agnes J Carmen’s media of choice is acrylic paint on canvas and textiles.

The 25-year-old has always had a passion for and interest in creating artwork and found it an escape from reality and her struggles in life.

“I started painting on canvases and working with acrylic paint at the age of 16 years old, this is when I discovered my passion towards art.

“I found art as a way of expressing myself and my emotions.

Agnes is now based in Lincoln and showcased her first artwork at the Gallery at St Martins in 2021 and has enjoyed another successful exhibition in April at the same venue.

The inspiration behind Agnes’ artwork is her life experiences, feelings towards herself andexploring her mental health.

“My artwork also touches on spirituality, and the meaning behind life and death; what happens after death.”

Agnes’ pieces use bright colours and shapes to portray her emotions.

Her favourite colours to use are yellow, red and orange as she see these as powerful, strong and bold.

“I have also started creating designs on jackets using patterns and colours - self-expression and my personal style influenced this project.

“I wish my clothing to make the individuals wearing the pieces feel unique and brave - to enhance the bold and colourful side of them, not to shy away from it and hide in the dark.

Some of Agnes’ pieces focus on human emotions and facial expressions, specifically how the human expressions can tell a story in different ways.

News from Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

Get your kids into nature with LWT FROM tots to teens there’s something for all young nature lovers with the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.

Numerous activities are held across the county from Nature Tots for the under fives to Junior Wardens, which introduces 10-18-year-olds wanting to learn how best to experience and take care of the natural world. Join them for woodland management, fungi forays, wildlife identification and dives into Lincolnshire’s prehistoric past.

Wildlife Watch is great for kids from around six to 14 years old who want to find out more about wildlife and the natural environment.

On Saturday, May 14 , 10-11.30am,Whisby Watch Group will be finding out what lives beneath the surface of the water in the lake.

Be quick on the draw to highlight impact of litter LITTER isn’t just an eyesore it continues to be a major issue for wildlife and the environment from the discarded plastic that’s carelessly dropped to microplastics in the oceans and soils.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Sea-Changers and Bunzl plc have launched an art competition to raise awareness of the issues.

Artists of all ages are invited to create a piece of art that illustrates how litter is affecting the environment and wildlife. It’s an opportunity for children and adults to showcase their creativity and inspire others to think about how their actions impact on the environment.

Selected artworks will become part of a display at Gibraltar Point’s Nature Centre from Saturday 28 May and Sunday 5 June 2022 to help celebrate the launch of a new water bottle filling station funded by SeaChangers Coastal Fountain Fund, sponsored

by Bunzl plc.

Liquorice Park

A Maytime meander WORDS AND IMAGES: DAHLIA LEE AMBLING through the park as we head into May you will find it barely recognisable from only a few weeks ago.

The vestiges of winter have been all but swept away under a tide of verdant green, with blossom generously decorating the branches, fallen petals carpeting the ground where new growth is welling up in every available space, and birdsong fills the air from dawn ‘til dusk.

Although each month has its merits surely May, above all others, deserves to be crowned as the most glorious month of the year? With frosts behind us and summer lying ahead, it is the perfect time to enjoy being outside. The pace has quickened to a fevered flurry, a free-for-all wild celebration with an intoxicating array of delightful dishes served up in quick succession – there is no time to mourn the fading flowers as no sooner had the long awaited snowdrops

grown tired than the daffodils rose up jostling shoulder to shoulder with the tulips, in turn their sad demise passes barely noticed as we welcome in our beloved bluebells.

The cowparsley will, along with nettles and sticky weed, ride roughshod over it all, a waist deep white wave of perfect flower froth above which an abundance of mayflower and apple blossom bedeck the boughs. In the shadows ferns unfurl from their tight winter nests, and in the sun the leaves stretch out, roses prepare to bloom, and the late-comers beech and ash make ready to catch up, bare branches soon bursting into life. Buzzing with bees and alive with the antics of the busy birds caught up in spring fever, the park paints a perfectly pleasing quintessentially English Spring scene.

With all this to enjoy it is hardly surprising that stepping outside lifts our spirits, but did you know recent studies have proven that being in natural green space is good for us - not just relieving stress and depression, but actually lowering blood pressure.

Why? Perhaps because on an intrinsic level when we are surrounded by green our basic instincts inform us that we have what we need – in a green space there is potentially water, food and shelter. With these necessities satisfied we can relax, freeing up our brains and senses to explore.

We may not be hunting for essentials but there are ways to indulge our foraging instincts when they kick in.

Often picking and collecting can be inadvisable, but we can reach in our pockets and pull out a nifty magic box … our phones not only take photos but provide a portal to boundless knowledge – with searches and apps we can identify the kaleidoscope of nature around us. And there is such joy in learning!

You don’t need to travel to a rainforest for wild adventures – you can witness the bizarre and fascinating lifecycle of a voracious predator by studying a ladybird.

There is immeasurable pleasure to be found

in following a bumble bee’s flight to its nest, or recognising a wild flower or identifying a bird by its distinctive song. It’s a matter of using our senses, learning to look and rekindling our innate wonder, thirst for knowledge and appreciation. A simple way to do this is to keep a nature journal. It doesn’t have to be an artistic masterpiece, just notes and sketches – recording the weather or the date of the first bluebell, colour swatches, a found feather.

So next time you take a wander on the park slip a notebook and pencil into your pocket and jot down what you see, you may be surprised how much you find when you look.

Flat Cap Diaries with Liz Lucas

Leaving the allotment for Canadian adventure As I write this I am holidaying in Canada visiting our daughter.

Although it is not my first visit to Vancouver, I have never been during the spring before.

The mostly benign climate is dictated by the Pacific Ocean and is warmer than you might imagine. Our first trip out was to the Pacific rainforest, distinguishable by its evergreen trees, multiple canopies and abundant epiphytes, mostly mosses and ferns.

Much of the old growth forest has been cut down, leaving huge, impressive trunks, occasionally with new growth from living roots.

Many trunks become ‘nurse trees’, where another species will seed into the decayed wood of the old tree and take root there, growing straight out of the crown.

Western red cedar, hemlocks and Douglas fir, Sitka spruce and various pines tower above a lower canopy of dense shrubs: blueberries, huckleberries, Indian plums, ribes, cornus and willows.

These in turn shade grasses and dense mats of dicentra, just coming into flower.

The forests are impenetrable, silent and brooding with an atmosphere of damp melancholy.

Understandable when one considers the mass culling of majestic, centuries-old trees that has been visited on these forests in the past.Very little of the ‘old growth’ forest remains.

In the city meanwhile the cherry blossoms are being celebrated.

In the garden of the house where I am staying three glorious Akebono cherry trees

are in full and exuberant bloom.

These beautiful, pale pink blossomed trees are everywhere, scenting the streets, planted in gardens and as street trees along the sidewalks. Inspired.

A visit to the town of Oliver in the Okanagan valley saw the landscape change dramatically. The climate is semi arid desert with hot, dry summers and cool winters. The Okanagen is known as the wine capital of Canada, which probably accounted for our enthusiasm. Fields of vines and wineries abound as well as orchards of apples, peaches, cherries, plums and apricots.

Neat rows of clipped trees or vines cover every slope.

Two bird reserves and two wine tastings later and we were ready to return to Vancouver, with several bottles and a very slight tan.

Poster available to buy THERE was such an overwhelming response to our chance to buy posters of Sarah Smith’s artwork that we’ve decided to offer other unique pieces.

Sarah’s graced the front cover of the Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide in the autumn of 2019 and has been back on the city streets again as part of the University of Lincoln’s street decoration project.

It was originally produced in competitions for third year art students at the University of Lincoln - a contest that produced four front covers for the magazine.

This month’s artwork was the winner of the very first competition in 2018 for the spring/summer cover - its theme was RAF Meets Steampunk. Ella McNeilage created this very impressive Steampunk gent.

Posters are printed by Ruddocks and available in sizes A4 (£15), A3 (£25) and A2 (£35).

Ethical fashion trend no passing fad

BY REBECCA HARDY WITH the growth in awareness of climate crises people have become more conscious of the environmental impacts of fashion.

The fashion industry damages the environment through wastewater, emissions and wasted clothing going into landfill.

According to the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, the clothing and textile industry is responsible for up to 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions and consumes around 215 trillion litres of water per year.

As people search for alternative, sustainable ways to stay up to date with new trends, more options are becoming readily available such as renting clothing, making your own clothes and clothing swaps.

Lincoln has recently welcomed the return of a clothing swap which aims to battle fast fashion. This was held at Happy Culture Café in April.

“The Lincoln Clothes Swap was an amazing event, with over 30 people swapping clothes and stories over tea and cake. The atmosphere was full of positivity as the community came together after a two-year hiatus,” said Anja Nielsen, co-organiser of The Lincoln Clothes Swap.

“I hope even more people will join us for the next event on July 1!”

A similar event was held as part of Fashion Revolution Week at the Engine Shed’s Tower Bar where visitors to the Clothes Swap could take away 10 items of clothing for a £5 entry fee (pictured above).

Kerry Gibson, a local textile artist organised the event: “Fashion

Revolution encourages supporters to push for the end of human and environmental exploitation at the hands of the fashion industry.”

She has organised a week-long event at Lincoln Central Library, which aims to inform the wider public about the harmful impact of fashion on the environment. It will run until May 7 and is supported by the Lincoln Climate Commission.

Buying second-hand clothing is also a popular choice for people searching for the latest trends, through apps such as Vinted, charity shops or vintage and second-hand stores Pre-Loved from Lincolnshire is a second-hand shop on Burton Road in Lincoln which allows people to sell their good quality second-hand wares, including clothing.

“I believe we have the best quality second hand clothing range in Lincoln! We have over 50 local individuals stocking in the shop at any one time, selling their pre-loved items,” explained Pirjo Holtta, owner of Pre-Loved from Lincolnshire and With Love From Lincolnshire.

“We sell around 1,000 items a week and restock every morning and every evening. Many of our sellers live within walking distance, keeping our carbon footprint very low!”

Steps to take so fashion does not cost the earth

AS if the climate crisis isn’t enough to contend with, we are now also facing a cost-of-living crisis. Rising inflation is prompting us to look at ways to reduce our spending. The good news is that what’s good for your pocket can also be good for the environment. Take clothing for example.

The fashion industry produces and sells between 80 and 150 billion garments a year globally. Nearly three-fifths of all clothing ends up in incinerators or landfill within years of being made [www.vox.com]. Fashion accounts for about 8-10% of global carbon emissions, and nearly 20% of waste water. It is also the second most polluting industry, just behind oil.

[BBC.com/smart guide to climate change] Surveys suggest that each person in the UK owns an average of 148 garments, many of which are rarely, if ever, worn. With creativity

and a few basic sewing skills you can create a whole new wardrobe without buying a single new garment. l Repair: Patch torn jeans and jackets with colourful contrasting fabric. Knit patches for the elbows and cuffs of worn jumpers. Replace broken zips and missing buttons. l Embellish: Jazz up old clothing with embroidery and beads. Replace dull buttons with bright shiny ones. l Remodel: Turn trousers into shorts, T shirts into vests. Lengthen or shorten dresses. l Reuse: Make rag rugs from old T shirts. Save cotton fabrics for patchwork. l Rags: Towelling, cotton and other absorbent fabrics make excellent facecloths, dishcloths and dusters – with no microfibres to pollute our rivers and seas.

IN this latest article examining the work of The Survey of Lincoln ANDREW WALKER examines a lion that arrived in Lincoln 150 years ago.

LINCOLN’S first purpose-built public park, the Arboretum, was opened amidst much ceremony 150 years ago on Monday 26 August 1872.

It was designed by Edward Milner, one of the great Victorian garden designers who had been an apprentice at Chatsworth House to Joseph Paxton, designer of the

Great Exhibition’s ‘Crystal Palace’. The original 12 acres of parkland, bordering Monks Road, was opened amongst much fanfare, and described as ‘the People’s Park’.

A structure within the Arboretum which prompted much interest at its opening was the large statue of a lion. This was donated by the city chemist, businessman and fourtime mayor F.J. Clarke, famed for his

His enthusiasm for statuary was well-known but his taste was not always admired. The writer A.C. Benson described the gardens of Clarke’s later residence, Bracebridge Hall, as ‘expensively crowded with plaster statues.’

The lion was undoubtedly a fashionable architectural icon. Edwin Landseer’s four bronze-cast lions were added to Trafalgar Square in 1868. The southerly entrance of Kew Gardens was also guarded by an artificial-stone lion, and similar lions also populated the grounds of Burghley House.

The manufacturer of the Arboretum lion was a fashionable London firm, Austin and Seeley, which received many commissions from palaces and stately homes.

Felix Austin and John Seeley worked mainly with composition stone.

They had displayed their work successfully at the Great Exhibition in 1851. The Arboretum lion was amongst the last pieces produced by the firm.

The sculpture was described in one newspaper report as a ‘monster lion’, being 10 feet long, 9 feet high and weighing over 8 tons. Following its arrival by train in Lincoln on 8 August 1872, it was transported from the Great Northern Railway Company’s yard, where the wheels of its railway truck were first removed and it was then lowered on to a trolley supplied by Messrs Clayton & Shuttleworth.

This was subsequently hauled by a Robey’s

traction engine to the Arboretum via the High Street, along Silver Street and finally down Monks Road.

According to the Stamford Mercury the lion’s journey was watched by ‘thousands of people’ shouting ‘deafening hurrahs’, accompanied by ‘the booming of fog signals’, while all the time the ‘magnificent animal’ looked ‘serene and grand.’

Since its installation, the lion has attracted much attention. Its fame increased after the night of 15 May 1909 when its head and paws were painted red; its tail black, and its body striped in yellow and red. This damage was reported widely in papers across Britain. No one was ever charged with committing what some newspapers described as ‘an outrage’ and others referred to as ‘a practical joke’. Postcard views of the painted lion at the time sold very well.

Further ‘decoration’ took place by ‘practical jokers’ in May 1925 when the lion, again painted with multicolour stripes, was reported to be a ‘jazz zebra’.

Councillors considered demolishing the lion in May 1946, owing to the cost of repairing its base, which was estimated at £80. It was saved, partly owing to the intervention of the mayor, Alderman J.W.F. Hill who admitted that he felt ‘a sentimental regard about this lion.’

Thankfully, the lion continues to look down ravenously on visitors to the Arboretum.

LINCOLN Women’s Institute felt the city was lacking in humorous activities over the Platinum Jubilee weekend so organised a trail in the Bail area.

Knitted corgis will be placed in shop windows along with a letter, which when all are collected will spell out something Royal.

The winner will receive a giant knitted Corgi.

Forms can be obtained from the Visitor Information centre in Castle Square and are free but a donation to the WI’s charity fund would be appreciated.

Kiosks key to health advice A DIGITAL community kiosk has popped up in Lincoln to help residents access information about wellbeing.

The kiosk also offer information how to contact the Lincolnshire Mental Health Helpline, as well as signposting to the wide range of activities and groups available through local directories.

Bridge Central, a community venue in Lincoln, has been using the kiosksfor several months in addition to supporting local people through community events and groups.

“The Night Light Cafe at Bridge Central offers a non-clinical, out of hours safe space for people who are struggling with their mental health,” said Stacey Marriott, Crisis Café Coordinator.

“The community kiosk and tablets have helped equip our team to provide valuable signposting advice to connect our guests with other services which can help meet their specific needs and improve their overall health and wellbeing.”

Kiosks are also available in Boston, Gainsborough, Grantham, Louth, Holbeach, Mablethorpe and Spilsby.

The project has been possible thanks to national funding Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust was able to secure.

Social Change - business as a force for good A LINCOLN-based behaviour change agency has recognised as a business that serves its community and not just the pursuit of profit.

Social Change UK has received its certification as a B Corporation (or B Corp), joining a growing group of companies that look at their whole social and environmental impact.

It has been certified by B Lab, the not-for-profit behind the B Corp movement, as having met rigorous social and environmental standards which represent its commitment to goals outside of shareholder profit.

Social Change UK is only the second business in Lincolnshire to certify as a B Corp and one of only 14 businesses in the East Midlands certified.

The B Corp certification covers five key impact areas of Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers.The certification process is rigorous, with applicants required to reach a benchmark score of over 80 while providing evidence of socially and environmentally responsible practices relating to energy supplies, waste and water use, worker compensation, diversity, and corporate transparency.

Social Change UK scored 109. Most businesses score between 40 and 100 - over 100 is considered outstanding. The Lincoln based agency is now part of a community of 4,600 businesses globally that have certified as B Corps.

The B Corp community in the UK represents a broad cross section of industries and sizes of over 600 companies and includes well-known brands such as The Guardian, innocent, Patagonia, The Body Shop, and Abel & Cole.

Support refugees coming to Lincolnshire MORE than 5 million Ukrainian refugees have been uprooted from their homes since Russia invaded their country on February 24.

More than half of Ukraine’s 7.5 million children have now been forced to flee the ongoing violence.

Families have been separated and many people are escaping with just the clothes on their backs and what they can carry.

Lincolnshire Community Foundation has launched an appeal to support refugees arriving in this area. Sue Fortune, CEO at Lincolnshire Community Foundation explained: “Recent events in Ukraine have disrupted and are devastating millions of lives.

are stepping up to the mark and offering practical help, welcoming refugees.
