50 new council homes for city

FIFTY new council homes will be built at Jasmin Green in Birchwood within the next couple of years.

City of Lincoln Council has been granted planning permission for the development, which it says will mark another major step forward in its Vision 2030 ambition to deliver sustainable homes that meet the needs of local residents.

The development will be delivered in partnership with BPMArchitecture Ltd and Belvin Construction. Work on site is expected to begin in Spring 2026, with completion anticipated in the autumn of 2027.

The scheme will provide a varied mix of homes, including: • 24 houses • 8 flats (4 ground floor and 4 first floor) • 18 bungalows All homes will be built to a minimum EPC A rating and are designed to significantly reduce energy consumption and household running costs.

This includes solar panels with battery storage, air source heat pumps, high levels of insulation, and EV charging points installed for all properties.

All 18 bungalows, and the scheme’s four ground floor flats have been designed to be fully wheelchair accessible.

The scheme also retains key pedestrian routes through the site, ensuring safe and convenient access to local facilities on both sides of the development.

All homes will be owned, let and managed by City of Lincoln Council and will be allocated in accordance with the Council’s policy.

Cllr Donald Nannestad, Portfolio Holder for Quality Housing, said: “Our Vision 2030 plan sets out a clear ambition to provide quality housing and build communities where people feel supported and connected.

“The homes at Jasmin Green will help us meet those aims by offering well-designed, affordable homes that reflect the needs of residents. This is an important step in ensuring we continue to provide trusted, tenant-focused services and improve housing options across the city.”

Daren Turner, Director of Housing and Investment, added: “Securing conditional planning permission for Jasmin Green is another step forward in our commitment to delivering high-quality, 100% affordable homes for the people of Lincoln, which is a key element of the council’s Housing Revenue Account 30-year business plan.

“With demand for these types of homes growing in Lincoln, developments like this play an important role in meeting local housing needs.

“We have worked carefully and closely with our partners and the local community to develop a thoughtful and responsive scheme that has been shaped to deliver sustainable, resilient homes that will benefit our communities for many years to come.”

We don’t deal in rage bait Chartered Certified Accountants

THE term ‘rage bait’ may have been the ‘Word of the Year 2025’ by the Oxford University Press (surely that should be words?), but the concept of manipulating the masses is nothing new.

Granted when the Romans were throwing Christians to the lions a couple of millennia ago the internet wasn’t around, but the idea was to stir up the hoi polloi.

The distraction tactics then were for commoners to blame the victims for all the ills of the world.

We should remember here that Jewish people and those from other denominations were also executed by felines in the arena.

Redirecting resentment was all it took and it’s depressing how little has changed over the centuries.

Now the masses are reached via social media, but the manipulation continues and rage bait is one of the tools.

It is a tool that this magazine, its associated website and social media platforms do not and will not employ.

A couple of recent reactions to stories that have been highlighted on the Indie’s SM led us to feel we needed to make that clear.

The latest received over 80,000 views across our four platforms.

Surely that reaction is a cause for celebration? Hell no!

The story was about someone dying after they were arrested and the comments ranged from the absurd and speculative to grossly offensive.

We had to step in and delete the most abusive. We don’t generally comment on posts and we do

welcome people’s views, even when they can make uncomfortable reading. However, when lines are crossed we will take action - deleting posts, blocking culprits and reporting the most serious when necessary.

I wasn’t going to mention this...but it’s my column and I have my own sense of injustice to satisfy. I also get to use great words like scurrilous and bunkum - please read on.

Lincolnshire Pride has conducted a scurrilous survey with bunkum results! There you go.

It basically claims that Pride is better read than us or any other local magazine in the county.

It’s so ridiculous that it is laughable except for two factors - it misleads the public and is designed to damage us and the other publications, which actually come off worse in said survey. I’m sure we’re not the best read magazine in Louth or Stamford, but I doubt Pride is either.

The tactic is reminiscent of the desperation demonstrated by the operators of a certain website...before it went belly up.

New nature haven for North Hykeham

...YOU MAY BE SUFFERING FROM DRY EYE SYNDROME A NEW community haven for nature will be created in North Hykeham over the winter.

North Kesteven District Council (NKDC) has successfully secured grant support from the Tree Council’s Trees Outside Woodland (TOW) Fund and plans to create a new community coppice.

As it becomes established, the site should become home to a wide variety of wildlife and plant species which will be given the chance to thrive in a protected space.

Pollinators, insects and birds are expected to make the site home, enhancing the natural environment in the locale, with the trees themselves capturing carbon and contributing to improved air quality.

The project will see native trees planted during winter 2025 on council-owned land, proposed for a site near Belton Park Drive in North Hykeham. The site has been identified for its accessibility, ecological potential, and alignment with the council’s tree planting ambitions.

The proposed planting site is approximately 20% of a 5,300m2 area of grassland, bordered by residential properties and farmland, where existing footpaths will be protected to ensure continued public access and enjoyment of the space.

The project will use 26 native tree species sourced from a Lincolnshire nursery, planted in layers using the Japanese ‘Miyawaki’ planting method to mimic natural forest ecosystems.

Planting is planned to take place across the 25/26 winter season and be completed by March 2, 2026.

Local residents, schools, and community groups will be invited to take part in community planting days, with volunteering opportunities available throughout the project - see NKDC website.

The Tree Council CEO, Sara Lom said: “Trees outside woodland are the trees we all come across most often – those in our parks, on our streets, and even the hedgerows that help capture carbon and act as heritage highways for a rich array of wildlife.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Defra to offer this additional Tree Council grant opportunity to benefit people, wildlife and our planet, and especially North Kesteven!”

Travel around our towns for £1.50 BUS journeys in countytowns were slashed in December to encourage more people out of their cars.

Lincolnshire County Council and bus operators started cut-price tickets for town centre trips to boost bus travel on December 8 and journeys in the county now cost just £1.50 – half the price of the national fare cap.

The council’s decision to offer reduced fares for the festive season and until well into 2027 - is backed by the Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding.

‘There’s no need to worry about parking, just hop on the bus and let someone else drive you into town,” said a council spokesperson.

The new town fares will apply for trips in Boston, Gainsborough, Louth, Mablethorpe, Skegness, Spalding and Stamford and Lincoln.

Local bus operators participating in the £1.50 Town Fare scheme are; Blands, Black Cat Travel, Brylaine, Central Connect, Centrebus, PC Coaches and Stagecoach.

A number of routes into Lincoln will also adopt the £1.50 fare for journeys in and out of the city from 8pm until midnight at the weekends and 11pm from Monday to Thursday - see opposite page for details.

The new fare scheme will run until March 31, 2027.

Mike Reed, Head of Transport at Lincolnshire County Council said: “This low fare will help both regular bus users and occasional travellers looking for a stress-free transport option for shopping, or a relaxed meal with friends and family.

“It will continue throughout 2026 and beyond as part of Lincolnshire County Council’s commitment to providing value for money fares for everyone across the county.

Hop on a bus for night out in the city THE map on this page shows the areas around Lincoln covered by the new £1.50 bus fare scheme.

It allows journeys in and out of the city from 8pm for the cheap fare until March 2027 giving people access to Lincoln’s nightime attractions until midnight at weekends and 11pm Monday to Thursday.

The routes operated by Stagecoach are 1E. 2E, 6, 9, 12A, 13, 16, 17, 18.

City ready to meet challenges in 2026 AS a new year begins I’d like to take a moment to reflect on 2025 an incredibly positive and productive year for City of Lincoln Council.

It has been a year of challenge, as it has been for many local authorities, but it has also been a year of real progress. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together. Serving a city of around 105,000 residents, we have all worked very hard to deliver the best possible services for those who live, work in and visit Lincoln.

Guided by our city’s Vision 2030, we have all continued to support residents through the cost-of-living pressures while also delivering major projects that will shape Lincoln’s future. From housing and regeneration to culture, leisure and environmental sustainability, we have continued to move forward together.

Lincoln truly shone this Christmas. Our cobbled streets, historic uphill area, and the stunning backdrop of Lincoln Cathedral and Castle feel especially magical and the season was made even more special by the festive lights and a strong sense of community. We are incredibly lucky to call this city home.

Over the past year, we have seen major progress at Charterholme, with the two site entrances now completed, infrastructure such as the bridge over the railway line delivered and new homes taking shape, with the first residents moved in.

We have continued to manage Town Deal projects and deliver millions of pounds of investment through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supporting regeneration, connectivity, creativity and opportunity across the city.

Our events programme continues to grow, with the Festival of History, Lincoln Live and the Lincoln Ice Adventure now firmly established, alongside support for much-loved events such as Lincoln Pride and Steampunk. These events bring people together, At Lincoln Christmas Lights Switch-on event.

Supporting residents has remained at the heart of everything we do.

Over 7,000 people have been helped to access advice on benefits, pensions and financial support. At the same time, partnerships with organisations such as Citizens Advice and Cadent Gas have ensured vital energy advice reaches those who need it most.

Investment in areas like Sincil Bank has strengthened communities, improved homes and created welcoming spaces for local people.

We have continued to deliver new and improved council housing, investing in energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and improving services for tenants. Our commitment to tackling climate change is clear, from greener homes and solar installations to electric vehicle infrastructure and cleaner air, with pollution levels now so improved that our Air Quality Management Area is no longer required.

Following a challenging period of dedicated repair and maintenance work, and with significant investment, we successfully partnered with Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) as the interim operator to bring Birchwood and Yarborough Leisure Centres back into full use, with improved facilities and equipment for users to enjoy and stay active.

Our parks and open spaces have once again achieved Green Flag Awards, and our heritage projects and community initiatives have provided opportunities for people of all ages to learn and connect with Lincoln’s rich history.

None of this would be possible without the passion and commitment of our staff, councillors, partners, volunteers and community groups, and I thank every one of you.

As we look ahead to the new year, I am confident that together we will continue to build a city that is caring, sustainable and full of opportunity.

Build your yoga tool box and breathe SAM BURLTON YOGA TEACHER & STUDIO OWNER AS I sit to write this, I am navigating a sense of rising panic and anxiety.

Yes, I'm a yoga teacher with decades of practice, but I'm also still a human being. A midlife woman navigating the hormonal hurricane of perimenopause, running two businesses and trying to keep the wheels on family life, and two sets of elderly parents with very complex health and care needs.

It is a lot. And today it's feeling heavy.

Now is when my repeated practice counts.

The ability to step back and notice what's happening. I can see myself spiralling and panicking. And out comes my yoga toolbox.

Mantra to help quieten the noise and provide a thread to tether me. The vibrations are good for calming the nervous system.

Breath, specifically breathing deep, low, and slow into the abdomen and elongating the out-breath.

Movement, nothing strenuous, just enough to notice where I'm holding on and can soften a bit.

So many of my own teachers have taught me in a way that means that these tools are

second nature to me now.

They're not hacks or tips.

They are baked into the core of my being.

This is the true magic of yoga. Not that you can contort yourself into the shape of a pretzel, but that you can swim in the ocean of life and know when it's time to float and surrender.

When things get tough, it's more important than ever to be able to let go, surrender control, and remember the famous Rumi quote: “You are not a drop in the ocean.You are the entire ocean in a drop.”

My yoga teaching encompasses physical yoga postures that are accessible to all, breath practice, pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra, and yoga philosophy too.

I recently qualified to teach Yoga 4 Health; an NHS backed 10-week yoga protocol for those at risk of cardiovascular disease, with type 2 diabetes, experiencing social isolation and with mild-moderate anxiety and / or depression.

I teach group classes, one-to-one, and retreat days for individuals and for businesses.

Reaching new horizons WHEN Margaret Bird retired one of her ambitions was to learn how to paint watercolours.

With her artwork featuring in two exhibitions, it’s safe to say that mission has been accomplished and then some.

“I could have stopped there, but no, I had to move on to acrylics and then I discovered oil and cold wax painting,” said Margaret who paints abstracted landscapes.

A recent series of paintings, Shifting Horizons, was inspired by the idea that the skyline was not a fixed entity.

“One only has to take a few steps in any direction or upwards and downwards and the horizon has, potentially changed.

“The horizon can change from one day to the next, a murky day or an exceptionally clear one changes how far you can see. The horizon lines in my recent landscapes are not clear, they are imagined and flexible, in the same way that the landscapes themselves are not based on any exact place.

“They can be where you want them to be, Lincolnshire or Derbyshire, Scotland or the Cotswolds. Usually, but not always, somewhere hilly or wild”.

Her paintings can be seen at the Indigo Crow gallery – the first outing is part of an exhibition featuring all nine artists that run the cooperative on Lincoln’s Burton Road called Detox from January 13-25.

The second is a solo display, Fenland to Moorland from February 17 to March 1.

“I never thought that I would ever be putting on solo exhibitions, yet here I am…who knows what will be next on my horizon, especially on a clear day?”

Andrew’s ambition to get local bands on Lincoln’s biggest stage I MET up with Andrew Coe, the new Entertainments Manager at The Engine Shed, to find out what his plans were for the new year.

Andrew has relocated from Hull to take charge of the bookings for the 1,800-capacity venue, which is operated by the University of Lincoln Students Union.

“This is the most exciting chapter of my career so far. I’ve always loved the place since first seeing the Kings of Leon here,” said Andrew.

The Engine Shed is Lincoln’s largest indoor live music and events facility and 2026 marks its 20th Anniversary. Embrace were the first band to take to the stage on 18 September 2006 and the venue has been filled with some of the biggest and best artists in the entertainment industry ever since.

The roll call is impressive: Paul Weller, The Stereophonics, Suede, The Beautiful South, Ocean Colour Scene, Kasabian, James, The Charlatans…and that’s before you even start naming the famous comedy acts.

The building was originally constructed in 1875 and was named Shed 40A when it housed locomotives for the Great Northern Railway.

“That’s what makes this venue distinctive - it’s a modern setting in the city centre, but it has history built into its fabric. The heritage detail of original bricks and girders makes it feel authentic. It’s not just a bland, custom-built warehouse.”

So who would Andrew book in if he could get absolutely anyone he chose? He looked briefly nostalgic and said: “Of course it would be The Smiths if Andy Rourke was still alive, but my reallife dream booking would be The Strokes. To get a proper New York punk band right here in Lincoln would be mind-blowing.”

Andrew is keen to get young, local bands into The Engine Shed.

His vision is to pair up the best of the local talent with up-andcoming nationally known bands to offer them the chance to feel the phenomenal experience of a professional sound and lighting set up.

The calendar is fast filling up for the year ahead. Highlights so far include 90s Britpop act Suede on February 9 which has already sold out, followed by The Fratellis on the same weekend. Scottish indie-rockers The Snuts will be supported by Brogeal in March and April brings ArknSaw from the local metal scene.

WHEN asked about food systems, most people favour an approach that provides for everyone in the population.

A system that gives them access to a healthy, diverse diet that works for the environment and for farmers and they’re especially keen on vibrant local food economies - delicious foods as part of place-making.

Indeed, most people we speak to in Lincoln would like to buy local food - but acknowledge that it is not easily available.

They are keen to support our local farmers and food producers - but the disconnect between farming and food seems to be widening.

I wonder if, like me, you felt a little depressed by the latest fast-food chicken joint opening in central Lincoln last month - so many worlds away from the vibrant local food culture we at the Food Partnership aspire to.

Although this is where notions of ‘local’ start getting messy…

According to a recent report from The Wildlife Trusts, Lincolnshire produces more chicken than any other county.

If that comes as a surprise to you, it is thanks to the local planning system doing its job very well indeed: Intensive Poultry Units (IPUs) are big, ugly and typically contain 40 000 birds in each shed at any one time - i.e. they stink to high heaven! It is very deliberate that they are well out of the way and - outside of the public’s notice - they continue to proliferate.

At age 35 days, the chickens emerge from their honking houses by the lorryload. This has recently become unpleasantly apparent to me, as one of the many cyclists using the new Lincoln Eastern Bypass regularly. Especially in summer, the pong of lorries with live chicken cargo makes me want to hold my breath for about 30 seconds after they pass (obviously not a possibility on the uphill leg of the journey).

What is still less visible than livestock units in the lovely Lincolnshire countryside, is the amount of land used to produce poultry feed. Livestock consumes around 38% of UK grown wheat; and far more seriously, soy feed grown in the global South is driving deforestation of some of the most pristine and essential ecosystems on the planet.

Also going un-noticed is the disposal of poultry waste, and the impact of nutrient pollution on water courses. Manure, when well managed, is beneficial to the soil and to crops (I use it on my allotment!). But in the quantities that it is now being generated, the reverse is true.

to sea - too dirty and expensive to treat for drinking water.

However, as our summers become hotter and drier, water availability is becoming increasingly limited, with implications for irrigation for vegetable production, as well as households and industry. There is a trade-off, you see, between one type of farming and another.

The claims by the industry about food security and economic growth should be seen in the light of the low number and low quality of jobs associated with cheap chicken, the increasing risk of zoonotic disease, energy-intensivity and sensitivity to heat-stress of ILUs, over-reliance on imports and volatile global markets for feed, and the impact on ecosystems and public amenity locally.

I write this, not to make the case for veganism (although there is a strong case to be made, and full respect to the veggies and vegans in our city), but to unpick a little of the complexity around local food, and the kind of farming we want more (or less) of in our county.

If you have to do Dry January try this JANUARY is a funny old month.

The fridge is full of good intentions, the bank balance is in recovery, and suddenly everyone you know is ‘just taking a break’.

You’ll know I’m normally staunchly anti-Dry January, but this month I thought I would embrace the pain. Which brings me neatly to something I never expected to be reviewing in this column - a non-alcoholic sparkling

rosé. In a can. Yes, a can!

Jukes 8 Sparkling Rosé isn’t a first for me, and it also comes with a strong endorsement. La Signora Canni enjoyed this while expecting, keen to recreate her Laurent-Perrier Rosé fix without the alcohol.

Did it succeed? Well, let’s be honest from the outset. Other than being pink, bubbly and served in a Champagne glass, that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

And that’s not a criticism.

Jukes 8 isn’t pretending to be alcohol-free Champagne, which often starts life as wine and ends up tasting like regret. It does things differently. It’s not fermented, de-alcoholised, or pretending to be something it’s not.

SHARPHAM Dairy is a family-run creamery owned by Greg and Nicky Parsons, who share a real passion for British cheese, their Devon home, and caring for the environment.

Cheesemaking here began back in 1982 on the Sharpham Estate, just over the hill from where the dairy now stands.

The dairy is home to a small but highly skilled team with over 100 years of cheesemaking experience between them, led by Production Manager Peter Howarth.

Using rich milk from their own herd of cows and from trusted local farms for sheep and goats’ milk, they produce around 70 tonnes of cheese each year.

Their ten core cheeses have earned countless national and international awards, and are often recognised multiple times.

We’ve spent years arguing about corks versus screw caps, rolling our eyes at plastic stoppers, and I am reviewing a can of wine.

This is what Dry January does to you. Is there any dignity in a ring-pull? The jury is out... you’re best to chill it, pour it and get on with your evening. In fairness, once it’s out of the can, it’s remarkably civilised.

Myriad uses of the Queen Hotel over the years ANDREW WALKER of The Survey of Lincoln looks at a former hotel which is hiding in plain sight on the High Street.

NOW Grade II listed, number 323 High Street, currently occupied by McDonald’s, was for many years home to The Queen Hotel, as the inscribed coped parapet at roof level continues to attest.

The building dates from the early 19th century but was remodelled 50 years later. Its Grade II listing statement refers to the building’s stucco front, plain tile roof with a side wall stack.

Originally called The Crown, its name was changed some time between 1835 and 1840, suggesting perhaps that the ascension of Queen Victoria in 1837 might have prompted the switch. There was a considerable amount of continuity associated with the business: three generations of a family named Edwards owned the property from at least 1835 until its sale in 1877.

In the particulars relating to its subsequent auction in 1882, the business was described as a ‘very well-established inn’ The building was described as having an extensive interior, including a dining room, smoke room, coffee room, bar, bar parlour, a private sitting room and 30 bedrooms.

Throughout much of the 19th century, the inn was used as the venue for a wide range of meetings, accommodating, among others, the Lincoln Old Association for the Prosecution of Felons which held its annual general meeting there in 1840; the Lincolnshire Football Association, the Lincoln Angling Association, the Lincoln Cycling Club and the Lincoln Farmers’ Club. Throughout the nineteenth century The Queen Hotel was a regular site of Liberal Party meetings.

The hotel was notable for its extensive inn yard which, according to the auction details of 1882, extended to 2252 square yards, with a rear entrance on to Sincil Street. It was a regular base for carriers’ carts and horse-drawn omnibuses through the nineteenth century and into the first decade of the twentieth century, with carriers benefitting from the inn’s proximity to the city’s two railway stations.

In March 1854 a correspondent to the Lincolnshire Chronicle complained of the ill-treatment being meted out in the inn’s yard by a large throng to four ‘poor unfortunate criminals’ chained to each other who were awaiting the arrival of an omnibus to take them to the House of Correction at Folkingham.

The inn yard had stabling for 60 horses in 1882. The hotel was well placed to play a prominent part in the annual April Horse Fair and accommodated much of the pre-horse fair transactions in its inn yard. Reports of the April Fair regularly referenced the large number of animals stabled at the premises and the number of visitors, some international, who stayed there during the fair.

As late as the mid-1930s, the hotel’s spacious yard was being used to accommodate sales of farm animals, such as an event in June 1934, when John R. Miller of Midkelton Scotland disposed of 22 dairy heifers and an Ayrshire bull there.

The Queen Hotel was still in business in the 1980s and many will remember its imposing revolving doors, which always attracted the interest of children. By the early 1990s, the hotel had closed and the building accommodated Pizzaland and then,

from July 1999, HMV. Tragedy on Greestone Stairs

THE Garton Archive contains hundreds of books and booklets from Professor Charles Garton’s exlibris collection.

One of these is a signed copy of the booklet, ‘Lincoln during the War’, by Fred Hurt, who wrote that the city was a vulnerable city because of its position as a major rail and industrial centre The fact that it was flanked by many nearby aerodromes, also made it a prime target for the Luftwaffe. Several crashes in Lincoln were recorded, many of which were caused not by enemy fire, but by pilot error, untested aircraft designs, inadequate training and even ‘sheer Greestone Stairs in July 1941 showing the Hampden bomber that crashed into the High School. carelessness’.

However, the men managed to get into the building and searched the first two floors, but flames on the staircase prevented them from reaching the third floor.

Later, the body of senior French mistress Miss Edith Catherine Fowle was carried out. She had been found trapped in the window frame, suffocated by the billowing smoke.

Four Royal Canadian Air Force men also lost their lives in the accident. Help turn Hawthorpe into a wildlife haven Rachel Shaw

OPPORTUNITIES to buy land that’s rich in wildlife, or has the potential for recovery, are scarce and it’s scarily expensive.

In the late autumn, I had the opportunity to visit land that the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust hopes to buy. As I walked along a quiet road between some large grassy fields, I imagined how the Trust must have felt in 1954 faced with raising twice the annual income to buy their first plot of land.

Gibraltar Point was already a nature reserve, and had been since 1948, in a partnership with and on land owned by the County Council. But the volunteers who ran the Trust wanted to secure more land for wildlife. And to secure it in perpetuity by buying the land. In 1954, they were aware of an area called Scotton Common. Its heathland covered with purple-flowered heather and scattered birch trees that once covered a more extensive area. By the 1950s, it was disappearing under conifer plantations. A last fragment remained at a cost of £400 for 30 acres (12 hectares). It seems a ludicrously small price by today’s standards but that was double the Trust’s annual income at the time. Fortunately, the funds were raised and the land bought. Had the Trust not bought it, this wildlife-rich area would almost certainly have become just another block of featureless plantation, its wildlife lost.

Today, the piece of land that the Trust wants to secure for wildlife is south of Sleaford. The landscape here is gently rolling arable fields and woodlands. Near the village of Hawthorpe, there’s 87 hectares of grassy fields that haven’t been farmed for decades.

Occasional mowing has kept it as grassland with a few trees and hawthorn scrub. It’s probably the largest area of grassland left in Lincolnshire. The cost is significantly more than £400!

Thanks to a short-term purchase agreement, the land is now temporarily safeguarded, giving us a crucial window to raise the £1.4 million required to secure it permanently. It’s a huge amount and we hope to cover a substantial part of it with funding from grant-giving bodies but we still need to raise £400,000 in donations from the public and local businesses. It’s humbling how generous people have already been. In the first two weeks of launching the appeal, over £30,000 was donated.

There’s still a long way to go but I reassure myself that, if they could raise £400 in 1954, we can raise £400,000 in 2026. I also reassure myself because it’s a very special area of grassland. I know, grassland doesn’t sound very special. It’s not as evocative as woodland with knarled trees that are full of character. Maybe, grassland needs a rebrand.

In other parts of the world, grasslands are savannahs, prairies and pampas. I’m searching for the Lincolnshire equivalent. At Hawthorpe, the grassland isn’t a single species monoculture, there are different species of grass including the evocatively named crested dog’s-tail and Yorkshire fog. Amongst the grasses, there are wildflowers giving splashes of colour and food for pollinators.

Beneath the ground, amongst the roots, there are earthworms and other invertebrates busying themselves recycling dead leaves, keeping the soil aerated and helping create conditions where carbon can be stored.

This diversity that’s already there provides a hunting ground for short-eared owls in the winter months. In the spring and summer months, there’s a large population of skylarks that sing high overhead. What we see now, is a tantalizing glimpse into how rich this grassland could be in the future – but only if we act now.

It’s A Gardener’s World

Love for the humble privet THE house I have lived in for the past forty odd years is getting on for 100 years old now.

It is modest with both a back and a front garden and each garden is bordered by a privet hedge. Some folks have scrubbed them up and put in fences or other plant borders but on the whole these ubiquitous hedging plants remain in place.

I have learned to appreciate the humble privet hedge over the years.

Truly they are no longer exclusively privet; there are dog roses, hazel, beech, honeysuckle, buddleia, bindweed, hops, hawthorn and elder twining through them; most of them garden escapees, but the effect is pleasing, if more difficult to cut.

Privet is easy to grow, very forgiving in its regenerative properties and looks reasonably good all winter.

It offers safe nesting support for small birds. We have wrens, sparrows, blue tits, robins and dunnocks all using our hedges to nest in. I have also seen the shy little gold crest, so small you can really only see it if you catch the flash of gold on its head.

elephant hawk moth caterpillar in our privet although never saw it as an actual moth and we were surprised at it not being the privet hawk moth.You’d think it would be wouldn’t you?

We cut the hedge a couple of times a year, avoiding the months between March and September so nesting birds can have a bit of privacy.

Privet can be cut down quite dramatically and it will grow back.

Cutting it when damp is better than during very dry weather; it recovers better - our hedges hardly grew last year it was so dry.

Privet makes a strong, evergreen hedge, can be cut into wonderful, topiary shapes and has many advantages for wildlife.

It has fragrant, white flowers followed by black berries, beloved of birds but poisonous to us.

It makes a neutral background for more dramatic garden plants, is a decent foil for wind and requires very little in return.

Let us begin 2026 by appreciating the humble privet.

2026 business predictions - key challenges and smart moves PAUL TUTIN, CHAIRMAN AND MANAGING PARTNER, STREETS AS 2026 approaches, businesses across Lincolnshire and the wider UK are preparing for a year marked by regulatory change and economic adjustment.

In the cycles of reform I have witnessed over several decades, the details of each shift may differ, but the pattern remains familiar.

Periods of uncertainty tend to test organisations, yet those that anticipate change and prepare early are consistently the ones that navigate the landscape most effectively.

A major development facing small and medium sized enterprises is the introduction of the revised Financial Reporting Standard 102 (FRS 102), which takes effect from January 1, 2026.

The most notable change is the requirement for most leases to be brought onto the balance sheet. This adjustment will alter how liabilities are presented and will require firms to understand both the financial and operational implications of their leasing arrangements.

In addition, the new five step model for revenue recognition represents a significant shift in how earnings are recorded. For many firms, especially those with complex contracts or servicebased income, this could materially change when and how revenue is reported.

These amendments may sound technical, but their impact is far reaching. Previous rounds of accounting reform have shown that businesses which prepare well in advance experience far less disruption. Reviewing accounting policies, ensuring internal systems are capable of supporting the new standard and arranging appropriate staff training will all be critical steps over the coming months.

Tax compliance is also entering a new phase. From April 2026, the next stage of Making Tax Digital will come into force.

Individuals with qualifying income above £50,000 will be required to maintain digital records and submit quarterly returns. While the move towards a more digital tax system has been long signposted, many have underestimated the practical impact of shifting from annual to quarterly reporting. Based on earlier cycles of tax reform, businesses tend to face challenges

when processes are left unchanged until the deadline arrives.

Ensuring software compatibility, improving bookkeeping accuracy and setting up efficient reporting routines will be essential to avoid unnecessary compliance pressure.

Regulation aside, firms will be defined in 2026 by their ability to scale efficiently. Investment in automation, data insight and supply chain resilience will allow organisations to respond quickly to market changes. Workforce planning will also be central, particularly for sectors where recruitment remains difficult.

Strong financial management will underpin all of this. Careful scenario planning, active cash flow monitoring and robust budgeting are set to become even more important as businesses balance risk with the pursuit of growth.

The three most significant regulatory and operational shifts for 2026 are: • FRS 102 revisions will change how liabilities and revenues are presented, placing greater emphasis on strong financial systems and clear reporting.

• The expansion of Making Tax Digital will bring thousands more individuals and businesses into mandatory digital record keeping and quarterly reporting. From April 2026, individuals with qualifying income above £50,000 will be required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates, with those earning above £30,000 expected to follow in later phases. This change will particularly affect landlords, sole traders, partnerships and small company directors who have previously relied on annual submissions. Early planning and system readiness are thus vital.

• Effective scalability, supported by automation, data capability and disciplined cash flow management, will emerge as a key indicator of long term resilience.

For Lincolnshire firms, the message is clear - preparation throughout 2026 will be the difference between challenge and opportunity when the new landscape arrives.

Plan key dates in advance A quick look ahead at school calendars, birthdays and big family events can prevent avoidable conflict later in the year. Making a note of priorities now gives both parents time to compromise,

rather than negotiating under pressure.

Talk openly with your children A New Year shift in routine can bring out mixed feelings. Encourage your children to share what they are excited about and what they are worried about. Reassure them that it is normal to feel more than one emotion at once. The more listened to they feel, the easier those early months tend to be.

Give yourself space too It is easy to push your own feelings aside while supporting everyone else. Try to process emotions as they come, rather than bottling them up. Talking to a trusted friend or therapist can help you stay grounded and present for your children.

Create small, positive traditions for the year ahead You may not want grand resolutions, but a few simple rituals can anchor the year.

That might be a weekly walk, cooking together on your nights, or a quiet New Year treat. New routines do not have to replace old traditions, but they can help

your family build confidence in this new chapter.

What the Budget meant for you

AFTER months of speculation, the Chancellor’s 2025 Autumn Budget represented a significant tightening of the tax landscape.

For families, landowners and business owners across Lincolnshire, understanding the implications is essential.

One of the most impactful announcements is the extended freezing of the inheritance tax (IHT) nil-rate band at £325,000 and the residence nil-rate band at £175,000 until April 2031.

With property values in many parts of Lincolnshire rising, more estates will be

pulled into the IHT net simply because thresholds no longer track inflation.

The maximum £1m combined nil-rate band remains available where allowances pass between married couples or civil partners on death, but the real value of that figure is eroding.

Families who have never considered themselves wealthy may now face unexpected IHT exposure without proactive planning, such as lifetime gifting or trusts.

For farmers and business owners, the changes to agricultural and business property relief, announced in the 2024 budget, are potentially dramatic.

From April 2026, a £1m cap will apply to the value qualifying for 100% relief, with anything above that receiving only 50% relief.

This is a major shift from the previously unlimited reliefs and could result in significantly higher tax bills for larger agricultural and trading businesses.

A welcome clarification in this budget is that the £1m allowance will be transferable between spouses, even where the first

death occurred before the reforms take effect.

With only two years before implementation, reviewing business and ownership structures now is advisable.

Another measure to watch is the High Value Council Tax Surcharge, which will apply from April 2028 to homes valued at £2m or more.

Few Lincolnshire properties currently fall within this threshold, but revaluations in 2026, and every five years thereafter, mean more could be captured over time.

Additional pressure will come from rising taxes on property, savings and dividend income, each increasing by two percentage points over the next two years, alongside frozen tax bands that will push more people into higher tax brackets through earnings inflation alone.

Reductions to pension and ISA advantages add further complexity.

With thresholds frozen and reliefs restricted, early planning has never been more important.

2026 will be a big one for Lincolnshire’s employers, and their contemporaries across the UK. This year, the Government’s contentious Employment Rights Bill comes into force, in part at least, business properties will be revalued for business rates and Making Tax Digital (MTD) will – from April 1st – be applicable to anyone with personal or trading property worth over £50k.

There’ll also be some Companies House reforms around transparency and corporate crime and some changes to where VAT is applicable (taxi rides, for instance). All in all, lots for them to face on top of a figurative lasagne of ongoing challenges – high costs, low consumer spend, general economic gloom, and workforce headaches among others.

Speaking of the workforce, you may recall that in my November column I foretold of upcoming opportunities for local employers to help shape the future of skills provision. Those chances to get involved and influence where our

county’s education and training providers aim their resources are now upon us.
