Imp on the Green Family Festival

EXPECT a raptor-ous response from the whole family to the Imp on the Green tribute music festival.

As well as featuring acts paying tribute to bands such as Oasis (bottom left), Foo Fighters, Spice Girls, Little Mix, Ariana Grande, Robbie Williams and Bruce Springsteen, the event will have a fun fair atmosphere with animatronic attractions.

Raz White, Managing Director of organiser Upstaged Limited said that Imp on the Green will have something for everyone: "As festival promoters, Upstaged are keen to bring an event to Lincolnshire Showground that will appeal musically to all of the family. However, we will be taking Imp on the Green a step further than just a music festival. We want it to have the overall feel of a carnival.”

Richie the Raptor (with friend top right and in crowds bottom right) looks like he has just stepped out of the Jurassic Park movies - he’s naughty, intelligent and highly vocal.

Fully animatronic he blinks, roars and even swallows - Richie is the only raptor of his kind in the UK.

Predators on a more manageable size include a newborn TRex (below left) along with a baby triceratops, which are hand-held, life-like animatronics that spark children’s imaginations.

Also accompanying the live music will be fairground rides, street food, Cheeky Imp Club for under 10s and several bars -using local suppliers whenever possible.

Editor’s Comments

Why does it take a war or pandemic to put ‘stuff’ into perspective?

I WAS working myself up to a good rant this month - there seemed to be an endless list that irked me and some even worth highlighting for the public’s benefit.

Then Vlad went mad and the poisonous wind went right out of my sails.

We could be on the brink of the unthinkable - a third world war. There are millions of people around the world who cannot tackle the major issues in life such as basic human rights and survival. Why should I get uppity about the quality of my weekend entertainment?

I’m hanging my head in shame, but I’ll soon get over it and be back to being Mrs Indignant - in fact by the next paragraph because the conflict has brought a worrying bug bear back into focus - people who ignore and even refuse to take in important information about the world around them.

Watching the news is scary, but what’s even scarier is the number of people, especially the young, who don’t engage and are only remotely aware of the situation in Ukraine - sticking instead to their social media bubbles.

It seems the entitlement culture means we don’t have to acknowledge anything that’s unpleasant or makes us feel uncomfortable and thinking or talking about war tends to make people uneasy.

Obviously we hope the Ukraine crisis is over soon and I would like to think that it could have some positive ramifications.

Just as the Coronvirus made many of us finally think about our work-life balance, the war should make us more aware of and engage with what’s happening outside our own little spheres.

The quality of the information we take in is important, so we need to be discerning about where it’s coming from and how it’s presented.

Perhaps, it’s time to put social media in its place - it does have one and can be useful, but it is not always a trustworthy source. The qualty control is questionable and reacting to it can be emotionally exhausting. Staying inside the SM bubble can be more distressing than interacting with the real world. You will not find us bullying teenagers through the pages of this magazine.

What you will find is many opportunities for people to become part of a wider community for the benefit of themselves as well as others.

Charities share £700,000 to inject new life into city EIGHT Lincoln Charities have received £701,427 from the government’s Community Renewal Fund to deliver locally-led, innovative projects to boost the city’s development.

Abbey Access Training, developmentplus, Green Synergy, Lincoln City Foundation, LEAP Housing,YMCA Lincolnshire, The Bridge Church and The Network are celebrating a successful funding application from the fund to work in areas such as improving employment opportunities, tackling isolation and bringing communities together.

The organisations are already aligned strategically and working in partnership - with three having recently received almost £340,00 for the Better Together Project.

The bodies will use local insight and knowledge to pilot projects that will impact on local growth, strategic priorities and community renewal. These pilot projects will springboard future activities for the forthcoming UK Shared Prosperity fund, explained Gail Dunn, CEO of Abbey Access Training , which is the lead partner.

“We are all absolutely delighted to receive £701,427 of this funding to deliver a range of innovative opportunities and support to the people of Lincoln.

“The partnership shows a real strength in the third sector and a commitment to supporting local people. The project is centred around a range of activities to help Covid-19 recovery, help individuals overcome isolation, deal with skills gaps, retraining, mental health, engagement and provide an umbrella approach to improve community cohesion across the city.

“We are excited to deliver all our project ideas in a COVID safe and secure manner”.

Community Project Mentors will be active in the local area, knocking on doors to inform local residents of the extensive offer of support; signposting to support; community activities and groups; short courses; six-month skills training programmes; Traineeship programmes; ESOL classes and much more.

Cost of living crisis AHEAD of the expected rise in the energy price cap, Citizens Advice and Energy Saving Trust have teamed up to explain why bills are increasing and what steps people can take to save money.

“These are unprecedented times and we know residents across the city and indeed throughout the country are finding this unsettling and stressful,” said Laurence Waylett, Quality and Service Manager for Citizens Advice Lincoln & District.

“There may be support available to you and we would urge you to make sure you are receiving all the support you are entitled to. If you require advice or are experiencing any issues with your energy supplier, we would encourage you to contact our Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133, or visit citizensadvice.org.uk so that we can help you find a way forward.”

Why are energy bills going up?

Global gas prices are at record levels - this means it’s more expensive for energy suppliers to buy the gas and electricity we use every day. These costs get passed on to the consumers in the form of higher bills.

A price cap puts a limit on how much suppliers can charge us for our gas and electricity. Ofgem announced that from April costs are set to rise by nearly £700 on top of the increases last year which took the price cap to its highest ever level of £1,277 for the average household.

If you’re on a Fixed Rate Tariff, your bills will stay the same until your contract ends. If you’re unsure of your tariff check your bill or call your supplier to find out.

In the past consumers could switch to a new energy supplier for a better deal, but these are currently rare.

How to save money on energy?

Simple things consumers can do won’t cover all the extra costs, but they can make a difference. l Turning the thermostat down by just one degree can save around £65 a year. Only lower it to a comfortable temperature many people find this is between 18-21 degrees. l Check your home for any gaps in the doors, windows and floors. Blocking any holes could save you around £30 a year.

Renters should ask landlords for good insulation. l Turning appliances, like TVs and washing machines, off instead of leaving them on standby could save around £40 a year. Turning off lights – even if it’s just off for a few seconds - could save £14 a year. Consider using LED lightbulbs, which cost less to run. l Cutting shower time by just one minute can make a difference.

If everyone in a four-person household with a water meter did this, it could save £45 a year.

THE iconic Lincoln Dragon Boat Race returns to the Brayford Waterfront on June 18, 2022.

Ringrose Law has teamed up with local charity LIVES (www.LIVES.org.uk ) to organise the spectacular event.

Dragon Boat Racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and over the last few years has become the fastest growing water activity in Britain.

“Up to 10 people paddle each 30-foot boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit. It’s a great day out and is a fantastic way to support a local charity,” said Organiser Alex Bennett of Ringrose Law. The legal firm originally launched the event in 2016, but it has been on-hold for the last two years due to COVID - the first race since 2019 promises to be bigger and better than ever.

“The Lincoln Dragon Boat Festival is mainly aimed at corporate groups who are looking for a great team building day out while supporting and raising money for Lincolnshire charity LIVES.” Tiffany Allen, the charity’s Fundraising Manager added: “We are immensely excited about joining forces with Ringrose Law which is a huge supporter of our charity. We need to raise £1.4 million every year to ensure our highly skilled volunteers are there when a 999 call is made, when minutes matter.

“The Dragon Boat Race promises to be a great day out and will entice some healthy competition between local businesses in order to raise these vital funds to keep our Emergency Responders on the road and continue saving lives in Lincolnshire.”

A NEW Climate Emergency Centre is coming to the city to give residents a place to tackle the environmental challenges ahead.

EarthLincs will officially open on Saturday, March 26 at Mint Lane Centre from 12 midday.

Jackie Kirk, The Mayor of the City of Lincoln, will be cutting the ribbon to open the centre, and along with the day’s events, there will be free refreshments and a raffle.

Following the opening, EarthLincs will be running every Saturday from 12pm - 2pm and will provide drop-in sessions for local organisations, groups and individuals to promote environmental activities.

“It’s imperative that like-minded groups and the local community come together to pool resources, share skills and expertise, to tackle the challenges ahead,” said Rosemary Robinson, Founder Member and Chair of the EarthLincs Trustees.

“We are all in this together, and together we can make the changes needed for a safe, healthy and sustainable future for our children and grandchildren.”

Within the space, groups and organisations will be able to hold events that help to build a sustainable future and support the local community. Use of the space will be free of charge.

EarthLincs is made up of local non-profit groups and is supported

by City of Lincoln Council.

The community hub will be located in the heart of Lincoln but will be part of a wider network of Climate Emergency Centres across the country.

Call for Snip statue

BY REBECCA HARDY SNIPS the dog helped raise the equivalent of over £1m for local charities in 1950s Lincoln.

Such a feat deserves a statue in the city centre according to university friends Brant Clayton (left) and Matthew Thomas who researched Snips’ story for their walking tour of Lincoln.

They have launched an online petition asking people to support the installation of a historical dog statue – similar to Edinburgh’s Greyfriars Bobby - in the newly developed Cornhill Quarter, which was where Snips was laid to rest when he died.

Throughout the 1950s, Snips and his owner Henry Tyler (top) gained local fame when the market trader began taking his dog to work and charging people a penny to stroke the Sealyham Terrier.

The pair raised more than £35,000 (worth £1,277,897 at the time of going to press) for various local charities, including the Great Flood Relief Fund which helped those who were affected by a tidal surge along the east coast of Lincolnshire.

“The story was something that we came across when researching for our walking tours we run in the city. We thought the story was

interesting and a little different to some of the other historical stories we tell,” said Brant, who co-founded the Lincoln Free Walking Tour with Matthew and is the creator of the petition to Lincoln City Council.

“We included it as we wanted to take people through the newly completed Cornhill Quarter and found that people really enjoy the story; it seems to resonate with people. That’s when we had the idea of a statue.”

Snips the dog was awarded a silver collar by the then Mayor of Lincoln, which can still be seen to this day within the city’s Guildhall.

Brant hopes the statue would provide a focal point to inform walkers about Snips.

“A small statue to Snips the dog, located within the Cornhill Quarter, would be a fitting tribute to a local icon and a wonderful story of charity within the city.”

Forever In Our Hearts Appeal

A heart for Sam “Sam would say ‘love you Mum, in my heart’ to me hundreds of times a day before he died, and that’s why the Forever in our Hearts appeal really spoke to me.”

CHRISTINE Newby has dedicated an ironwork heart in memory of her son, Sam, who had a wonderful and fun-filled life before he died from pancreatic cancer in December 2021.

“Sam was born in Hong Kong in 1978 with Down’s Syndrome.

After falling in love with him at the Home of Loving Faithfulness, my husband and I had the privilege of adopting him andmoving back to the UK together four years later,” said Christine.

“Sam would say “love you Mum, in my heart” to me hundreds of times a day before he died, and that’s why the Forever in our Hearts appeal really spoke to me. We intend to place our heart beside his grave in the churchyard.

“HimToo was a very important part of our family – a stuffed rhinoceros which Sam had from his third birthday. He got his name because Sam would always say “me bwing him too?” when we went anywhere.

“Sam was diagnosed with terminal cancer on Decembr 7 after spending just two days in hospital. He died at St Barnabas in the early hours of December 20, which rocked our whole family. We are still feeling the shock even now.

“HimToo went with Sam to the Hospice and stayed with him right to the end. It seemed only right that HimToo joined Sam on his last adventure in the coffin, watching over him in his place of rest.

“All of the staff at St Barnabas were simply wonderful, asking if we

needed anything and keeping an eye on all of us, not just Sam. “He passed so suddenly that we weren’t able to get to the Hospice in time, but we felt so grateful to the nurses when we got there because they had got him looking so comfortable, cuddling his favourite toy, HimToo. They had placed little dinosaurs around his head too – all so very caring.”

The appeal celebrates the life of a loved one with a lasting, personalised tribute. By donating, people will receive a beautiful ironwork heart, handmade in Lincolnshire by The Old Smithy.

All hearts ordered before Sunday, March 20 will feature in a display at the Dean’s Green, Lincoln Cathedral from April 2 - 18 for the public to visit.

The Hospice will also run a series of ‘Lights at Night’ events from April 1-3, so people can book a ticket and view the hearts at twilight. As the sun sets, a display of over 1,000 ironwork hearts will be lit, accompanied by music against the backdrop of the cathedral.

Ask the Vet from the Veterinary Hospital

Prevention better than cure - improving animal health SUSANA Fraiz Guizan PgC EMS, MRCVS answers this month’s question.

Ever since she saw the cows in the fields of her native Galicia (north-west of Spain) she wanted to help animals. After veterinary school, Susana spent several years driving around Galicia looking after the bovine population.

“When I arrived in England and started to work with the smaller species I realised the complexity and joy that small animal

veterinary medicine brings.”

A member of the VH team since 2018 Susana has obtained a postgraduate certificate in small animal emergency medicine and surgery and is working on a certificate in cardiology.

She lives in Lincoln with her daughter and her two cats: Judas (Galician farm cat with an attitude) and Rosalía Boudicca (Maine Coon aspiring to royalty).

Both vaccination and parasite control are important for your pet. If your pet is protected against infectious diseases, it will benefit both them and your family. The correct product and frequency will ensure your pet is parasite free and protected against disease.

Vaccinations Your pet should receive a primary vaccination course early in life, followed by annual boosters, which ensure immunity is retained and your pet does not become vulnerable to diseases. Boosters are vital in cats and dogs. The major diseases protected are: Dogs - Canine Distemper, Canine Parvovirus, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza Kennel Cough Cats- Cat Flu, Feline Chlamydia , Feline Infectious Enteritis, Feline Leukaemia Virus Rabbits - Myxomatosis,Viral Haemorrhagic Disease Fleas I am sure we are all familiar with these creatures! They are the most common parasite, which can multiply quickly due to their lifecycle.

Only 5% of fleas live on the animal, in fact the eggs, larvae and pupae can otherwise be found in the home or the outdoors. If you have a flea ‘burden’ I would always recommend that you treat the house as well- please ensure you read the instructions carefully on an environmental spray. Often, we do not see fleas- we just see black specks in the coats which is ‘flea dirt’ (digested blood’).

Combing your pet is the easiest way to see this flea dirt.

Treatment options to treat both flea and ticks for cats include spot – ons and tablets with an average efficiency of between 4-12 weeks.

Re administration of treatment is usually required for effective long-term control. Many dog only products are toxic to cats .

Ticks Due to climate change and increased movement of people and pets between countries the statistics are showing a rise in the species and numbers of ticks prevalent in the UK. While they can be found all year round, their numbers increase between March and November when temperatures rise. they can carry microorganisms that can cause diseases in both animals and humans, from one animal to another. Diseases are passed when the ticks feed. For ticks to transmit disease, they must first feed on an infected animal.

Treaments cannot stop the tick attaching, but if your animal is protected, any attached ticks will die quicker, minimizing the chances of disease transmission.

WITH over 20 donkeys now in permanent residence at Bransby Horses, their dedicated team has gained a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Resident farrier Scott Sykes (pictured above) has been with the charity since 1998 and in that 24 years he has been able to relieve the suffering of many of the animals rescued from neglect.

His work with the donkeys is often time consuming and specialised as they can be more prone to foot disease than horses and ponies.

Scott explained: “Donkeys are meant to live in hot dry countries and are not really designed for the wet conditions we have here.

“In the very worst cases, foot disease can potentially be fatal to them so it’s important they are looked after correctly.”

Donkey’s feet should be picked-out and cleaned daily and trimmed every six to eight weeks by a registered farrier.

Scott said: “I think Penelope the mule is one that stands out to me. When she arrived she wouldn’t let us near her. She was as wild as wild can be. It took years to get her used to it. Now, thanks to our work and gentle handling, she happily lets me trim her feet without any issues.

“Oscar the donkey is another, as his feet were very overgrown when he first arrived and his prospects didn’t look good. But, within two trims he was looking so much more comfortable.

“It’s one of the reasons I enjoy working at Bransby Horses, as I can really make a difference to the animals we get in, which is very satisfying.”

All the donkeys are housed in large barns during the winter on warm, dry bedding.

In the summer, when they are out in the paddocks, their weight is managed carefully to avoid excessive weight gain – which could result in the development of a serious foot disease, called laminitis.

Spotting when there is a problem is not always easy as donkeys are very stoic so may only show subtle signs of foot pain.

Scott added: “Often if there is an abscess brewing a donkey won’t show any signs of pain until it’s quite advanced. A horse on the other hand will show signs of severe pain from the start.

“The best advice I could give is to know your donkey and its behaviours and always be on the look-out for anything out of character, such as lying down a lot or weight shifting.”

Visit the donkeys at Bransby Horses, which is open to the public every Wednesday to Sunday 10am – 4pm and seven days a week during school holidays 10am – 4pm.

Up until March 31 children can take part in a special creative challenge called Woody’s Words to discover all the names for parts of a horse. Trail sheets are £3.50 with a prize for each one competed and the chance to win a toy and treats hamper.

The hidden treasure that needs community’s TLC

IT’S the not-so-secret garden where hundreds of Lincoln children have played hide and seek; workers have enjoyed peaceful al fresco lunches and dog walkers have given their pets a feast for the senses.

One only has to spend half an hour in the John Dawber Gardens at The Lawn to be aware that it is much-loved by the local and wider community.

However the area - named for a Victorian brewer and property magnate - is looking more than a little tired.

The efforts of volunteers from the nearby Liquorice Park have kept the gardens tidy, but cannot hide the rusting gates, peeling benches, overgrown pond, neglected installation and paths turning to sludge.

Due to government cuts City of Lincoln Council can no longer afford to maintain the gardens, but Cllr Neil Murray (top right) is determined to turn a negative into a positive by

inviting the community to help restore the gardens and become responsible for their upkeep.

“The first step is to completely revitalise the gardens with a pretty major restoration project and then, hopefully, hand over to a community group to take over the maintenance.”

He has enlisted help to put such a group on a formal footing and is looking for around £30,000 for the initial scheme. He has already a financial commitment from the public/private partnership Investors in Lincoln and approached The Dawber Trust, but is inviting businesses, charities and individuals to get involved.

“We know how much the community values the area and we don’t want to change it entirely, but to safeguard it and put it in community hands.”

A ROUTINE mammogram saved the life of Amanda McSorley, Editor of the Lincoln Independent (right) .

The early detection of breast cancer - she received her diagnosis on Valentine’s Day 2020 - followed by surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the other drug treatments she underwent throughtout the pandemic means she is now cancer free.

Amanda is sharing her story to encourage anyone who feels a lump to have it checked out and for all women to take up invitations to screening.

The series is also to thank and highlight the work of a huge team of experts at the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust involved in her care and that of other patients.

I found myself comparing very positive notes about the Consultant Surgeon and oncoplasty specialist in the pub and even when I went for my latest C-19 jab.

Beating Breast Cancer

No such thing as one size fits all It confirmed that there are many women out there who have a very positive experience of dealing with breast cancer in our city and county.

I should say here that there were over 30 members of the multi-disciplinary team looking after me and they all deserve credit.

Surgery is a scary process and it’s one that the Breast Team at United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust wants the women they are treating to be part of so they feel in control of their own bodies.

Every woman’s breasts are different, so is how she feels about them and the team’s approach to breast surgery reflects that.

As January’s article highlighted the development of surgery techniques means so much more can be done while tumours are removed to promote recovery both physically and mentally.

Investigation into the cancer through further mammograms, ultrasounds and, in my case, biopsies provides a lot of information of what should be cut where.

I had a 66mm area of microcalification that turned out to be cancer and an ultrasound revealed another 32mm area that the vacuum assisted biopsy confirmed was not.

“It’s off with the boob,” I thought, but therapeutic mammoplasty was

recommended - my breast reduction.

Because I was well endowed Mr G could take away the cancer and reshape my breast preserving my own tissue.

Research shows that it is just as effective as a mastectomy at removing cancer and preventing its return. However, there is less trauma to the body as with a mastectomy and further surgery to augment the breast is not needed. Two years on and I’m still really happy with the final results.

The top picture shows the lovely compression bra worn for six weeks after surgery. This image features a model - let’s just say my bra had to work very hard , but did the job. The two photos below are of me - the centre shows how lopsided I was until I could have the assymetry surgery hardly surprising as I had 800 grams of breast removed. This was the only instance of the Coronavirus interfering with my treatments and progress, which as it was not a health procedure was completely understandable. I have been levelled up since.

The bottom picture shows some of my scarring pretty ugly but Mr G was delighted with his work - he knew that it would almost completely disappear.

It’s not all about sausages

BY LAURA STRATFORD JOIN CO-ORDINATOR LINCOLNSHIRE FOOD PARTNERSHIP. “WHAT’S local food like in Lincolnshire?” she asked me. “You have sausages, don’t you?”

I talk about food culture enough to know that the question of whether Lincolnshire food is more than a sausage is hardly an original one. This offhand enquiry causes me to feel furiously insulted every time.

Lincolnshire - the breadbasket of Britain, with the second biggest fishing port in the country, that produces almost a third of UK vegetables: we have more to say for ourselves than “sausage” - or even Poacher cheese and plum bread.

And yet I do sometimes envy the food culture of other places from the delectable coast of North Norfolk and the smashing choice of veggie restaurants in Brighton to the sustainable food pioneers of Bristol; reading Otto Lenghi’s article about his love of Britain’s diverse restaurant culture in the Observer last month… I couldn’t help thinking that he was really talking about London.

Here’s the thing: for every £1 spent by the likes of you and I on veg box schemes or farmers’ markets, a further £3.70 is generated in social, economic and environmental value.* It’s a no brainer that we should foster a vibrant, delicious, diverse local food economy in Lincolnshire.

Last year, our friends at the Small Food Bakery hosted a Walk in

the Wheat at Turners of Bytham farm in Lincolnshire, with millers, bakers, and the whole food community.

We spoke with the dairy farmers whose cows graze at Bytham, about the interdependence of manure, soil, and the wheat and oats.

It made me feel altogether differently about bread and grain and how it gets to our plates. It made me care much, much more.

So my call to action this spring is for us all to be active in our local food system: those with knowledge and experience of growing, processing and cooking have a vital role - to use, share and pass on those skills; those with means have the opportunity to invest in a better food system for us all; and we all might cultivate a deeper understanding and respect for the farmers and landworkers producing our food and stewarding the land in difficult circumstances.

Sticky coffee-chilli chicken wings Fairtrade coffee is the secret ingredient in the marinade for these sticky chicken wings giving a deep and aromatic flavour.

Ingredients 750g pack chicken wings 2 tbsp Co-op olive oil 2 tbsp Co-op tomato ketchup 2 tbsp Co-op Fairtrade light brown soft sugar 1 tbsp Co-op reduced salt dark soy sauce 1 tbsp cider vinegar 100ml cold Fairtrade espresso 1 tsp dried oregano ½ tsp chilli flakes (or more if you like it hot) To serve 4 tbsp Co-op 0% fat Greek style natural yogurt 4 tbsp light mayo Zest and juice of ½ lime ½ x 25g pack flat leaf parsley

Method Put the chicken wings in a large bowl Combine the remaining ingredients, then pour over and massage well Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6.

Transfer the wings to a lined baking tray and roast for 40-45 mins, until cooked through To serve, mix together the yogurt, mayo, lime zest and juice, and half the parsley Sprinkle the rest of the parsley over the wings and serve with the lime dip.

TOP TIP: pour the juices from the pan into a saucepan and bubble over a high heat for 2-3 mins, until reduced, then serve as a sticky sauce *Please note, recipe time does not include marinade.

The idea of forming a Rotary Club for Lincoln was explored at a meeting held at the Great Northern Hotel on Tuesday, March 16, 1922 when Mr Vivian Carter, the Secretary of the British Association of Rotary Clubs for Great Britain and Ireland, addressed the meeting.

The Lincoln Club was formed on the proposition of Mr Clement Newsum, who claimed that it would be 'capable of rendering service to the city and community at large such as no other organisation could do.'

It was an enthusiastic meeting and great hopes were expressed for the new club. Using phraseology that resonates today, the Mayor of Lincoln, Cllr WH Kilmister said: “In these difficult times in the Rotary movement there was that which could cement society together in a bond of brotherhood and which would remove the distrust which is so rife today between the classes.”

Since that first meeting Rotary in Lincoln has grown to have four clubs and other affiliations as current president Peter Manton explained: “After 56 years as the only Rotary Club in Lincoln it was decided that there were more opportunities for service than the Rotary Club of Lincoln could manage alone and The Rotary Club of Bailgate Lincoln was founded in1978. In 1980 they founded their Inner Wheel Club and in 1991 founded the Rotary Club of Lindum Lincoln and they in turn, founded the Rotary Club of Lincoln Colonia in 1997. An Inner Wheel Club was established for Lincoln had been set up in 1960.

“While each club has its own separate identity, a rich mix of local community and world-wide charity has developed and when appropriate, the four Rotary clubs work together. We are proud of what the four clubs have achieved since 1922.”

The clubs all follow the original ethos of fellowship and service with the former seeing leading business professionals and community figures meeting regularly as friends.

“But when any member is in need of comfort and support, as we all are from time to time, it is instantly and warmly forthcoming.”

All the clubs are proud of their work in the community and with charitable organisations – Service Above Self has been Rotary’s motto since 1911.

The Rotary Club has supported numerous good causes over its history, for example in 1925 the club made a contribution to a wireless set for the nurses at Lincoln County Hospital marking the start of a long relationship.

An annual Carol Service was held at the Savoy Cinema (now the site of the Waterside Shopping Centre) for many years.

A strong link with Lincoln Cathedral was also established early in the club’s history and in 1927 negotiations took place between the Club and the BBC to broadcast a special Rotary service to be held in the minster in February 1928. Thousands of people throughout the British Isles heard, through the medium of wireless, the service in the Angel Choir.

Minutes from the late 1920s and early 1930s highlighted the effects of the great economic depression as many members of the club had to resign. In September 1928 the club discussed migration of boy labour as although there was a surplus of unemployed boys in the city, others were coming in from even more depressed areas. Rotary traced the incomers and introduced them to clubs and organisations for the welfare of youths in the city. The serious unemployment of the period was also reflected in Rotary providing

50 pairs of trousers for the unemployed at £12. 2s. 0d.

The impact of the outbreak of a new World War was noted in October 1939, when it was reported that an instruction had been received from R.I.B.I. that National Service was to be regarded as good and sufficient reason for non-attendance at a Rotary Club.

A letter was sent by the then President, Arthur Mansell, to all members of the Lincoln Club: “In these difficult times there is an increasing anxiety to help and support one another and to put our whole effort into the common pool to give our club, our city and our country as much support as is individually possible to achieve success to the very great and serious undertaking which has been forced upon our government again.”

The historic high tides on the Lincolnshire coast on January 31 and February 1, 1953 caused enormous flooding and damage.

Immediate aid was necessary and the Lincoln Rotary Club, along with many other charitable bodies and local authorities, contributed to a Flood Relief Fund.

As well as its charitable work Lincoln Rotary Club has also played a pivotal role in other aspects of the city’s history including setting up the city’s Civic Trust by organising a public launch meeting on November 4,1953

and agreeing to pay all expenses.

A decade later in October 1963 the Club was invited to a meeting about a University of Lincoln or Lincolnshire, which came out in favour of such an establishment. Rotary was given two places on the University Promotions Committee, although the city had to wait 30 years for it to become a reality.

As an international organisation Rotary has many links with clubs in other countries and there have been many visits overseas from even the early years. The twinning of Lincoln and Neustadt and der Weinstrasse started with a Rotary trip to the German city for its October wine festival, which proved an extremely successful association leading to reciprocal visits between the two clubs.

Twinning was finally formalised in 1978.

Rotary has continued its work over the past 25 years - moving with the times to admit the first women members in 2000, while adhering to its principles - although it could not physically meet during the pandemic it channeled funds to those in need.

MEET THE ARTIST PETE JOHNSON

Pete’s portraits rekindle his lifelong love of art THOSE born in the 70s may remember a TV programme called Take Hart - an art show aimed at kids.

Pete Johnson spent hours watching episodes sending in drawings but sadly never made it onto the show’s Gallery.

He remained undaunted and throughout his school years art was always a favourite subject achieving A at GCSE level then attending art college.

“It is with these early memories that my love of art and drawing began. It has stayed with me over the years if only in the background.

It wasn’t until the lockdown of 2020 that I decided to invest my time and bring art front and centre again and started to produce a couple of portraits.”

Pete lives and works in Lincoln and would describe himself as a casual part-time amateur portrait artist working mainly with graphite and coloured pencils aiming for a realistic finish adding as much detail as possible.

“With the gentle persuasion of friends and family almost two years ago I started posting some of my work on lnstagram @pete.art1 and it seems to have snowballed from there. Fast forward to today and I’ve slowly built up a modest collection of portraits ranging from family members and self-portraits to people’s pets and loved ones.

“It gives me enormous satisfaction knowing that these portraits are hanging up in people’s homes and I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has commissioned or supported me over the last couple of years.”

Get more in sync with nature RACHEL SHAW LINCOLNSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST OVER the past few weeks the weather has been more wintery than for the entire winter.

Howling gales and downpours have caused disruption and heartache for some as trees have come down and homes have flooded.

It makes it hard to think that spring is on the way.

But in the calm between the storms, a brief walk outside reveals that the natural world is preparing for the season ahead.

Even in late February when we’re still in the grip of winter, a robin sings proudly from the top of a hawthorn proclaiming his territory.

Tree buds are fattening, preparing to burst and the soft yellow flowers of primrose have opened – appropriately named the prima-rose or first rose of spring.

There may still be a chill in the air, but there is an inevitability about the arrival of spring. By the time you read this, you may have seen your garden blue tits collecting nesting material. If you have a pond, there may be clumps of frogspawn. Perhaps a blackbird has started an early morning serenade.

We officially enter spring on the day of the Spring Equinox.

This usually happens around 21 March: the first day of astronomical spring. But that isn’t to say that nature follows our calendar. As the day’s lengthen, each minute of extra sunlight triggers a change in the behavior of plants and animals, and the warmth from the sun raises the air and soil temperature. If the winter is mild, this can happen sooner but if the winter is particularly cold, these events are delayed.

Nature is adaptable and can change but only if the change is slow. The problem we have now is that it is rapid and chaotic. We see it in the weather records that are repeatedly broken. Whether it’s the coldest spring, driest winter or wettest summer, it’s the unpredictability that causes problems.

Plants and animals have evolved alongside each other and share their spring timings. As the climate becomes more chaotic, these timings become mismatched. Not all species adapt at the same rate can fall out of step with one another.

Birds such as blue tits feed their chicks on the caterpillars of moths that eat oak leaves. They have evolved to lay their eggs so their chicks hatch at the time of peak abundance of caterpillars. As temperatures rise, oaks come into leaf earlier. The caterpillars are quick to adapt and hatch earlier.

But can the blue tits respond quickly enough to lay their eggs earlier? If not, they won’t be able to provide enough food for their chicks. It is critical when you have to find 1,000 caterpillars a day to feed your offspring.

The natural world is full of species that are dependent on one another: when queen bumblebees emerge from hibernation they need plants in flower to feed on; when swallows return they need vast numbers of insects to eat; when a cuckoo finds a nest to lay her egg in, she needs it to be filled with eggs not chicks that have already hatched.

In our centrally-heated homes with artificial light, it’s easy to think of ourselves as separate to nature. But everything is linked and we are also part of the natural world. We can and do find joy in nature. It is beneficial to our mental health.

But it’s also our life support system providing us with oxygen to breathe and food to eat. As the climate become more chaotic, we need to be more in sync with nature not less.

Such a significant flower, they really do seem to shout ‘Spring!’ their call as loud and clear as the song thrush’s voice, a signal to awaken a whole host of old friends waiting in the wings ready to join the chorus.

Folklore predicts March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, and there’s no doubt that February has left us storm battered and winter weary, knowing we have a hotchpotch of weather yet to come, but Spring is undeniably approaching!

The first day of Spring is significant and much debated, with three possible entry dates depending on whether you choose the sensible Meteorological calendar, dividing the year into equal quadrants starting with punctual precision on March 1, the Astronomical calendar opening on March 20 – the Vernal Equinox, or using the Phenological approach measuring the seasons by tell-tail signs such as the first nest or snowdrop.

But maybe we should just rely on our senses, that feeling when you venture outside and everything has shifted, and you can sense its presence in the air, the light

and the birdsong, opening a season of hope and new beginnings.

March is a wonderful time to get outside and see what signs of Spring you can spot. Here on Liquorice Park things are rapidly coming to life. On the Allotment

Flat Cap Diaries with Liz Lucas MARCH is traditionally the time for you to be pruning bush roses.

If you are unsure what kinds of roses you have, here is a general pointer: l Shrub or bush roses stand up on their own and grow to anywhere between four feet (or 1 metre 24) up to head height or above; l Climbing roses reach roughly anything between three and 20 feet.

A support of some kind is required. These are pruned in autumn; l Rambling roses will take over your entire garden. Often the support is a large tree or massive fence. Hacked rather than pruned.

l Patio roses can be grown in a pot and don’t get much above 18 inches or 46 centimetres.

The idea when pruning, is to aim for a goblet shape in your shrub rose, with space in the centre of the plant for good air flow. This can help prevent fungal problems.

Prune between a third and a half of the original size, down to a bud.

Make sure the bud faces away from the centre of the plant and slant the cut to allow rain to run off and not freeze on the stem.

Take out any dead, diseased or weedy stems and check that no main stems are crossing and rubbing on each other, as this can cause wounds where disease can enter.

If your shrub is prone to black spot, where dark spots appear on the leaves and stem, it is a good idea to remove the fallen leaves lying underneath the shrub. A top dressing of compost around the rose stem will help to damp down any fungus spores. Black spot is a common problem, particularly on older roses. It weakens the plant eventually but does not kill it.

This is generally the accepted advice. However, my neighbour has a shrub rose, which has been more or less left to its own devices for years. It is covered lushly in flowers from late May through to the first frosts. It makes my carefully pruned, fed and pampered roses look pathetic.

So please feel free to ignore any of the above.

Lose yourself in old city ERIC Croft kindly dropped off the latest book in the Yesterday’s Lincolnshire Series, but it was a few days until I finally got my hands on it.

Someone else was always reading it - ooh-ing and aah-ing at the photos with exclamations of ‘Have your seen this?’.

Lincoln Life on Old Picture Postcards happened to arrive before a weekend a load of old Lincolnians were back in the city. As we live nearest the pub we had a lot of footfall and Brian Lund’s collection had a lot of admirers.

I hope it turns into sales of the book because you’d have to have to be missing a spark of imagination not to find it fascinating. Did you know Japanese royalty had visited the city or there’d been a Palace Theatre on Newland?

And at under a fiver it really is the gift for everyone - from guests you want to keep occupied while you (well Him Indoors) make breaskfast, to something that will last longer than a bunch of daffs for Mother’s Day. This is the 21st book in the series and Eric has had a hand in many of them, this one included.

He and the publishers, Reflections of a Bygone Age (postcardccollecting.co.uk), do have a winning formula.

Snapshots of the Past

Myle Cross - one of the forerunners of LCHS THIS picture was taken in 1969 or ‘70 at the annual Sports Day of Myle Cross Secondary School for Girls, writes PETER HARROD, archivist at Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School.

It was kindly donated to the Garton Archive by Jane Burgess (née Otter) and the picture includes Annette Burton, Linda Thompson, Maria Fisher, and Tina Hackney.

The School’s log books, written in a flowing and elegant style by the Headmistress Miss J K Gentry, reveal that sport and games were taken seriously at the school, and Sports Day was one of the key events in the calendar. The adjacent St Giles Boys’ School produced

some excellent footballers and athletes while Myle Cross School also had its successes. In July 1970 Jane Thompson was selected for the 200 metres relay in All-England Inter-County Athletics Championships held in Solihull. The girls in the picture are clearly engaged in a highly competitive relay race themselves, although perhaps there is a slight question mark about technique and lane discipline.The crowd certainly appears to be egging them on, no doubt cheering for their own House representatives.

The School was located on Macaulay Drive on the St Giles Estate, before it combined in 1974 with the St Giles Boys’ School, the Christ’s Hospital Girls’ High School, and Lincoln School to form Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School (LCHS). Some of the buildings remain and are currently used for other educational purposes.

The School opened in September 1958, when the St Giles coeducational secondary school closed, as the St Giles Secondary Modern School for Girls, but changed its name to Myle Cross in 1962 to avoid confusion with the boys’ school, and to make it clear that it was a separate girls’ school.

The staff was dominated by female teachers, which continued throughout its life. According to the log book 115 full and parttime members of the teaching staff were appointed between 1958 and 1974, of whom only three were men. Mr F W Allen was a temporary appointment for about six weeks; Mr G Kenny, taught Science and English for 21 months; and Mr Goss, taught Maths for about two years.

Although the secondary modern schools in Lincoln and elsewhere had neither the academic tradition nor the kudos of the selective grammar schools, they provided a broad and balanced education appropriate to the needs and abilities of their pupils, which equipped them with the knowledge and practical skills needed to take their place in society, and to obtain employment in the local industries.

Both the boys’ and the girls’ secondary schools on the St Giles estate established proud traditions and practices, led by able and resourceful head teachers, such as Miss Gentry and Mr Arthur Humble.

The ending of selective education in Lincoln in 1974 brought challenges both to the pupils and to the teachers of all four schools that combined to form LCHS, and it is a tribute to every comprehensive school in Lincoln that pupils of all abilities and talents have been educated together in the same school for almost 50 years and given opportunities to fulfil their ambitions and potential.

Centre of anniversary attractions CHARITY partners Waterside Shopping Centre and St Barnabas have launched their birthday and anniversary celebrations by decorating the indoor mall.

The Watersidemarks its 30th ‘official’ birthday this year on March 17 and St Barnabas’ 40th anniversary is in June.

Throughout 2022 the two organisations will be inviting people to help them celebrate their milestones with fun activities and competitions.

Veronica McBain, Head of Fundraising and Lottery at St Barnabas, said: “This year is very special for both ourselves and the Waterside Shopping Centre, so it is fantastic that we are able to come together and celebrate with the community. The wonderful display installed by Fizzco will help us raise more awareness of the work we do, as well as providing something fun for local shoppers.”

Waterside Centre’s General Manager Dean Cross added: “St Barnabas have been our charity partner since 2018 and we wanted to celebrate both ours and St Barnabas milestone birthdays.

Throughout the year we will have various activities in the centre with particular emphasis on fundraising and putting some ‘fun’ into our

fundraising.”

Fizzco, the decorations provider have also installed a large red heart, which can be filled with messages to remember a lost loved one.

Wendy Clarkson, Managing Director of Fizzco said, ‘Fizzco is thrilled to work alongside Waterside and St Barnabas to celebrate their anniversary milestones and create a display that everyone can enjoy. As a local company, it was important that we support St Barnabas, and we very much look forward to supporting the fundraising events and celebrations throughout the year.”

The Waterside Shopping Centre is Lincoln’s maincovered retail destination with over 20 High Street retailers in a three-storey, 133,000 square feet mall. A £9 million redevelopment was completed in autumn 2014, which added a further 13,000 square feet of retail space and brought in H&M and Next. It is open 362 days of the year, closing only for Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Easter Sunday.

Civic award is back - make your nominations LINCOLN Civic Award – the city’s top honour will be presented again this year – after a two-year break due to the challenges created by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Trustees launched their search to find the 2022 winner of the 19-inch, eight-side obelisk, which was made by the late city silversmith Derek Birch.

They believe the pandemic itself will have made it easier for people to think of and nominate worthy companies, charities or individuals who should win the award, because many firms, organisations and individuals have continued to shine during

this unprecedented time.

Chair Henry Ruddock said: “The 2022 winner will join a celebrated list of industrialists, educationists, charity workers, sports men and women and others who have taken Lincoln’s name worldwide by making a big difference to the city.

“We are looking forward to receiving some exciting entries that give us plenty of food for thought this year.”

Market shouldn’t be for the lowest common denominator AMANDA - I was interested to read Dr Aske’s letter regarding the Lincoln Christmas Market.

We residents have been comprehensively ignored and I do feel that our views and our experience of the Market have been swept under the carpet for too long.

Dr Aske properly gives much emphasis to the financial aspects of the Market; I would like to add my personal experience as a longtime resident.

I live in a part of Lincoln that is blighted when the Market is on.

So much so, that we have to leave our home and stay away for the duration, which means leaving on Thursday morning at the latest (hoping that road closures, stewards, and police will allow us to get out) and not coming back until the following Monday morning, (because the road restrictions are in place until 10pm on Sunday night – too late to return and unpack and park the car). That means four nights in a hotel, with the cost borne by us.

The coaches bringing hordes of visitors drop their passengers outside my house, where they then gather for their return coach, leaning against the doors, even sitting on window ledges, dropping cigarette ends and catering debris. Believe me, it is worse than it perhaps sounds to you. They peer in the windows downstairs and – as the coaches are usually double-deckers they can easily see into upper (i.e. bedroom) windows - all blinds and curtains have to be closed for the duration. When we stay, we feel shut in, imprisoned in our own home, in the dark, amid the smells, noise, and fumes from huge coaches. We cannot attend hospital or GP appointments, deliveries are severely restricted, and any outings are impossible.

I first visited Lincoln Christmas Market many years ago, and found it delightful. Small, quiet, well run, interesting stalls. But now? It is noisy, smelly, overcrowded, stall after stall selling cheap rubbish gimmicky hats, or smelly foods. There is a funfair for goodness sake! The road closures make life almost impossible for those residents who live in the ‘inner circle’ or on the edges. Carers, whether health care workers or family or friends have access severely restricted to properties where people who need help are confined for the duration. How fair is that? There is so much more, but having complained many times, I have learnt that no-one really listens or cares, as it is not as important as making money.

And yes, that is important too I agree, but the Market costs us financially and no-one offers to help us, or mitigate the disruption.

The Market is such a trashy event, such a vulgar disgrace on the face of a fair city like Lincoln. Cannot we take a step back and think about improving it, making it more enjoyable for all, and not

just a commercial event aimed at pleasing the lowest common denominator and the people who wish to profit from them?

Editor’s note: City of Lincoln Council believes it has recognised the concerns about the quality of the market and had hoped to address these in its 10-year plan for the event. This was put on hold due to COVID-19 and the 2021 event was simply about ensuring it could go-ahead safely.

Simon Colburn, Assistant Director for Health and the Environment said the council will be looking at the 10-year plan again for 2022.

THE BOTTOM LINE What does 2022/23 look like for payroll?

THERESA WADDINGHAM, PAYROLL DIRECTOR, STREETS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS AS we head into the final few weeks of the 2021/22 tax year - following last year’s Autumn Budget announcements and the news of the National Insurance rise that preceded it - what do those charged with payroll need to know to start preparing for the new tax year on April 6?

National Insurance (NI) changes A new UK-wide 1.25% “Health and Social Care levy” will come in from April 2022, which will increase National Insurance contributions for employers and working age employees.

Employers will have to pay 15.05% NI on employee’s earning over £175 per week (£9,100 per year), and employees will start paying 13.25% NI on earnings over £190 per week (£9,880 per year). Employees’ NI will increase to 3.25% on earnings over £967 a week (£50,270 per year).

However, from April 2023, the levy will be separated from NI on payslips and shown as a separate “tax”, and National Insurance will return to the 2021/22 rates. At this point working adults above state pension age will also start contributing. The message “1.25% uplift in NIC funds NHS, health & social care” will be added by software providers to highlight that the levy is to help fund public services.

Aside from the headline NI changes from the 2023/24 tax year, the Levy will have implications for payroll in terms of things like: • P11Ds, Benefits in Kind, Payrolling of Benefits and IR35 • P60s, P45s and P11D forms • Attachment of Earnings /Court Orders.

If you have employees under 21 or apprentices under 25, you will need to

check that you’re using the correct NI category, letter M for those under 21, or H for apprentices under 25.

Tax Code Changes No changes were made in the Autumn Budget 2021 to personal allowances.

This means that unless you receive an amended tax code notification for an employee, the standard tax code will remain at 1257L. The basic rate limit also remains at £50,270, including the personal allowance, while the higher rate limit also remains unchanged.

Employment Allowance You will still be able to claim the £4,000 employment allowance for 2022/23 providing your employers’ Class 1 NI bill was less than £100,000 in the 2021/22 tax year.

National Minimum/Living Wage Increases The new National Living Wage rate will come into effect from 1st April 2022.

This is five days before the new tax year begins on 6th April.

• National Living Wage (23 and over) increases from £8.91 per hour to £9.50 • National Minimum Wage (21-22) increases from £8.36 per hour to £9.18 • National Minimum Wage (18-20) increases from £6.56 per hour to £6.83 • National Minimum Wage (under-18s) increases from £4.62 to £4.81 • The Apprentice Rate increases from

£4.30 per hour to £4.81 In addition to these perhaps key changes payroll managers and employers may need to consider the National Insurance holiday for veterans, along with the new NI categories for employees based in the newly created Freeports.

Looking at workplace pension contributions, whilst there are no changes for the coming tax year, private sector employers still have to automatically enrol eligible employees into the business’s auto enrolment workplace pension scheme.

Time to outsource payroll?

The last few years for many charged with managing an organisation’s payroll have certainly, not least with the furlough arrangements etc, been a real challenge in terms of ensuring compliance and meeting deadlines.

As such, as we start to approach the new tax year, it could be a good time to consider the potential benefits of outsourcing payroll. Certainly, payroll bureaus like Streets Payroll continues to see interest from those looking to relieve the burden of managing payroll in-house.

Could pedal power boost your business?

VISIT Lincoln has launched a free, online course for Lincolnshire’s businesses to help them attract and increase business from cyclists – a growing market worth an estimated £520 million to the UK economy.

Cycling represents a growing and valuable tourism market, particularly in rural areas. In June 2020, it was reported that there was a 100% increase in weekday cycling with that rising to around 200% on the weekends when compared to pre-Covid-19 levels.

With this growth comes new audiences and new opportunities for local trade and businesses. According to Cycling UK, 1.23 million overnight cycle trips in the UK contribute around £433m to the economy. Whilst research from the Department for Transport found that cyclists spend around nine per cent more per trip than the average visitor with an average spend per day of a cycling trip of £46.75.

Cycle Lincolnshire’s ‘Cycle Friendly Charter’ helps businesses gain an understanding of how to make their business more appealing to the cycling market and benefit from this growing audience. The Charter outlines services that should be offered to achieve Cycle Friendly status such as secure bike storage facilities and access to a first aid kit, puncture repair kit and water to re-fill bottles. The free, online course should take around 90 minutes to complete.

Once businesses have completed the course and satisfied the

criteria, they will be gifted a plaque to display in their establishment, feature as a highlight on VisitLincoln.com, receive a digital badge to use online and receive printed literature to showcase they are Cycle Friendly.

Visit Lincoln, the city’s official Destination Management Organisation (DMO), is evolving into Destination Lincolnshire, which aims to build an interconnected, resilient, and flourishing visitor economy. The Cycle Lincolnshire brand will form a foundation of Destination Lincolnshire led by the company’s latest team member, Helen Smith, who has a wealth of experience having worked on the Cycle England project for the last six years.
