Dash for cash puts the fun into fundraising

THE popular Colour Dash is back to help St Barnabas Hospice celebrate its 40th birthday - and everyone is invited.

And the event at Lincolnshire Showground on May 14 promises more paint powder than ever before and aims to raise £150,000 for patient care.

The pandemic saw frontline staff, like those at St Barnabas, being celebrated and thanked with rainbows. Sign up to this year’s Colour Dash and experience the joy of being covered in the colours of the rainbow while completing a 5km fun run.

Participants will be raising much-needed funds so St Barnabas nurses can continue delivering vital care to vulnerable patients across Lincolnshire.

The Colour Dash is a 5km untimed fun run around Lincolnshire Showground, with participants being covered in coloured, environmentally friendly paint powder at each kilometre.

It is designed so supporters can have fun with their friends and family, with no pressure to run any or all of the route; you can run, walk, dance or skip your way around the course.

Jayne Denham has taken part in the Colour Dash in memory of her husband: “When the end was near for Nige, the nurses knew and there was absolutely no sense of panic. They made sure he was as pain free and comfortable as possible. As his breaths became gradually shallower, I began to sing to him, and then he just left. I remember dropping to my knees at that point and the nurses held me and rocked me.

“Nigel had a beautiful death and I feel so grateful that I was able to be with him and witness his transition. Everyone at the Hospice gave so much to my family.

“Later that year, I signed up to take part in the Colour Dash with our children, my sister-in-law and some friends. We all had t-shirts made with Nigel’s face on and the words ‘be more Nige’ across the front.

“What an experience when we set off and got covered in coloured paint powder at every kilometre! It was a great opportunity to just get messy, have a laugh and just be colourful. There was a real buzz in the air and such a sense of togetherness.

“Going through the finish, my heart was truly pounding, the tears from my eyes falling freely. The splashes of colour painted rainbows of joy and pride, not only for a love lost, but also for every single missed soul on that most incredible of shared days.”

Supported by Western Power Distribution and the showground, the event will also feature food, drink, merchandise stalls, music and a fun warm-up from the stage. The fun starts at 9.30am.

St Barnabas will be running their first Donation Station at the Colour Dash with supporters asked to bring a bag of good quality items to donate to their charity shops if they are able. These can be dropped off throughout the day with the Retail team.

The joy of herding cats I BLOODY love putting this magazine together.

OK sometimes it’s a little fraught and you can feel like you’re herding cats, but oh the rewards!

The Business Wife says she can feel like an overbearing headmistress on deadline but the payback is that we do learn something every day.

For example we didn’t know the sunflower is the national bloom of the Ukraine until Dahlia Lee’s column (page 29) came in, but now we’re definitely going to plant a few.

Dahlia home schools her brood and judging by the picture below she educates them with some quality publications.

And that’s another joy - the interesting, generous, energised and talented

people we get to deal with.

Stuart Dixon is certainly energised - he has raised more than £200,000 for charity and has joined the drive to make it a bumper year for St Barnabas Hospice during its 40th anniversary.

All eyes on city as historic Lincoln Grand Prix returns THE British Cycling Road Race season will start 2022 as it ended 2021 with the race that everyone wants to win - the Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix.

It is the only remaining monument race of British Cycling dating back to 1956 and has been run almost continuously ever since.

Its heritage is one reason the Grand Prix’s past winners list reads like a Who’s Who of cycling as it includes Olympians, World Champions and Tour de France stars - Mark Cavendish made his second attempt last year, but didn’t finish. Another reason is the eight-mile course through the city’s historic uphill streets and into the countryisde and tackling the steep cobbles of Michaelgate several times before finsihing in Castle Square.

“The Lincoln Grand Prix is the race that cyclists across Europe want on their CV - the cobbles of Michaelgate are infamous,” said race organiser Dan Ellmore.

The racing weekend on May 7-8 is not just for elite cyclists as the Saturday is devoted to the Lincoln Sportive, introduced in 2010 to allow amateurs to ride the professional course. This will see 1,500 cyclists tackling courses of 33, 60, 78 and 107 miles.

With hundreds of elite riders taking part in Sunday’s GP the race is a spetacle that attracts huge crowds and brings Lincoln considerable promotional and economic boosts added Dan. Last year’s event was watched by 5 million viewers through various channels and brought in £2.5million to the local economy.

He added: “We know that some people see it as an incovenience because of the road closures. We don’t want people to see it as penalising the area, but as an opportunity to get involved.” www.lincolngrandprix.co.uk

Mayor joins fight against abuse A DOMESTIC abuse charity has welcomed the Mayor of Lincoln, Cllr Jackie Kirk, as its Patron, who will support the charity after her time in office ends in May, writes REBEECA

HARDY. EDAN Lincs - Ending Domestic Abuse Now in Lincolnshire offers safe, emergency, temporary accommodation to anybody(with or without children) fleeing domestic abuse.

“When I was approached by EDAN Lincs to become a Patron for the Charity I willingly and wholeheartedly accepted the invitation, as I understand and fully appreciate the complexities of domestic abuse,” said Jackie (pictured).

“I look forward to working closer with EDAN Lincs in the months and years ahead, to help and support those currently trapped and who desperately want to break free. To raise awareness of how much better life can be and support the victims of abuse to look for a brighter more caring, loving future.”

The charity was initially established in 1999 and offered outreach services to women and children in the West Lindsey district, but with the support of Lincolnshire County Council, EDAN Lincs has grown and now offers its services across the county.

“We now have 21 units of refuge across Lincolnshire, 20 of which are commissioned by Lincolnshire County Council. Our refuges comprise of two multi-occupancy refuges – 11-unit shared accommodation & 5unit refuge and 5 dispersed properties,” explained Anna Davis, Fundraising Coordinator.

“We also receive BBC Children in Need funding to support children and young people in our refuges as well as additional smaller pots of funding to further support the services we offer.”

According to the charity, on average 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experience domestic abuse in their lives and its countywide outreach services assist those who have been affected.

EDAN also provides holistic support including specialist intervention for those with additional complex needs such as mental health or substance misuse issues and specialist support for children and young people.

“We define domestic abuse as physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse by a partner, ex-partner, or any family member.

This includes coercive and controlling behaviour, forced marriage and so-called honour-based violence,” said Anna.

“Our outreach support service provides non-judgemental emotional and practical support to women, men and children who are still living in, or have recently left, an abusive relationship that require advice and support with regards to options available to them. This service is free and confidential.”

No fault divorce becomes law

BY NICK ASPLEY NO Fault Divorce is part of the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2020, which became law on the April 6, 2022 in England and Wales.

It allows couples to get divorced without having to blame each other for the breakdown of the relationship. This change also applies to the dissolution of civil partnerships.

It will reduce conflict and allow couples to work out issues involving children, finances and property.

The Problems With Current Divorce Law and Why it Needs to Change Divorce law hasn’t changed since 1973. Back then, society’s attitude to marriage was very different than it is today.

Under current law, separating couples have to rely on one or more of the ‘five facts’ (adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, two years separartion with consent, five years separation without consent) to prove their relationship has irretrievably broken down.

In essence, it forces one person to blame the other for the breakdown of their relationship.

This law has been criticised for many years. Both by divorce lawyers and those unfortunate to go through a divorce.

Establishing blame isn’t the best way to start a divorce. Especially when there are children involved and a financial settlement to negotiate.

In reality though, most marriages break down because couples drift apart. The need to place blame is completely unnecessary.

How Does No Fault Divorce Work?

With the introduction of no fault divorce, a couple can divorce on the grounds of ‘irretrievable breakdown’. This removes the need to lay blame and prove one of the five facts.

Couples Can Apply For Divorce Together If both parties agree, they can make a joint application for divorce or dissolution. This creates the environment for a very amicable separation.

The new law also removes the ability for a spouse to contest a divorce or dissolution. So even if one spouse doesn’t agree to divorce or dissolution, it’s irrelevant. This removes the expense, time and stress of going to court.

News LINCOLN ROCK CHOIR SONG OF SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE - HOME COUNTRY OF ITS LEADER

LINCOLN Rock Choir has shown its support for their Ukrainian-born leader and everybody affected by the war by producing a video of a specially recorded song.

In it Christina Dmytryk Clark leads her choir in singing A Thousand Years which has an extra poignant meaning in light of the current situation in Ukraine.

The video also features interviews with Christina and her choir members.

A Rock Choir leader since 2009, Christina first found out about the war in Ukraine through friends and family who immediately started sending messages of support.

“I knew something had gone wrong before I turned on the news,” she explained.

“You are in shock.You are in denial because you don’t want to believe it’s happening.

“You just straight away check that your friends and family are ok.

Christina has many relatives and friends in Ukraine mostly in the west but some are in the central area more affected by the war.

Several have escaped to Poland, but her 21-year-old nephew chose to head to the front line of Kyiv.

“The Ukranian spirit won’t be broken,” added Christina “We are going to lose and are already losing so many innocent lives, which is incomprehensible. We’re just praying for as few losses as possible.”

Rock Choir members’ version of A Thousand Years is dedicated to Ukraine and the country’s ‘brave, brave’ people.

The choir leader said people had approached her with tears in their eyes: “And they have been donating money, clothes…everything.

They have been so incredibly supportive.

Rock Choir is the largest choir in the world covering 400 locations in the UK with 30,000 who like to sing pop and contemporary music.

“All the Rockies in the UK have done so much and it’s just so heart-warming and it makes you believe that the goodnesss will win.”

Christina’s advice for people who would like to support her countrymen: “The main thing we can all do is check your sources of information, check what you’re sharing before you share it. If you see something that’s false make sure you report it. Donating to reliable charities where all the money goes to the Ukraine.

Obviously welcoming anyone we can in Europe and in the UK.” She has received emails from people offering their spare rooms: “People are just being amazing.”

Lincoln Rock Choir Member Vanessa Wakelen added: “I hope all the people in the Ukraine can see all around the world, how much love and support there is for them.”

Humitarian agencies expect 18 million Ukrainians to be affected by the conflict with four million displaced across their country’s borders with Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova – many arriving with only what they can carry.

National squash champs A TEAM of city pupils have achieved number one status in England for squash.

Grant for new drop-in EARTHLINCS Drop-In has been awarded a grant of £1960 from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The grant will be used to fund the drop-In for six months as it is held every Saturday from midday until 2pm, at the Involve Centre on Mint Lane.

“Each week the drop-in offers the chance to find out more about climate change and how the community of Lincoln can work together to create a sustainable future for the city and its residents,” said volunteer Rosemary Robinson.

Talks, skillshares, plant swaps, vegan cookery and more will be offered in the coming weeks.

Play pals at Bransby

THERE has been much excitement among the Bransby Horses’ donkey herds this month with the arrival of enrichment toys generously donated by loyal supporters.

These toys and props help eliminate boredom among the herds and encourage them to move around and play.

A special stable mirror made for equines in the boy’s barn was a big hit. So many muzzles have now smeared across it the yard teams have been busy just keeping it clean.

Scratching posts, feed balls, salt licks and Kong toys were also extremely well received by the donkeys, who spend their winters in a barn when their fields are too muddy and so welcome the extra entertainment.

Visitor Centre Yard team leader Shell, who oversees the day to day care of the donkeys, said: “Our donkeys are well fed and physically want for very little, but once these basic needs have been met this enrichment brings even more positive benefits to their lives.

“The toys provide mental stimulation for them and this is a great way to stop them getting bored and becoming depressed and uninterested in life.”

And she added: “We are so grateful to all our supporters who buy items from the Bransby Horses Amazon Wish List. We also use old milk cartons filled with fibre cubes and frozen carrots to keep them busy and 12

old Wellington boots.”

Domino, one of the male donkeys, has needed extra stimulation since the Christmas period and regular walks with his brother Nero have helped lift his spirits.

Enrichment has also been very useful and his favourite toys have included sticks, bananas and hay balls.

Nipper loves playing with all the toys, but recently has taken a liking to the team’s Wellies with which he plays tug-o-war with the other boys.

The female donkeys have had some new brush heads put on the barn walls too, which Matilda has made use of.

She’s loved playing with the straw/hay balls and has worked out how to move them about with her front legs.

Shell said: “The team think she’s rather clever, but you won’t catch us telling her this – she already has the biggest ego in our Jenny herd.

“Donkeys love to play. They are inquisitive, social animals that benefit from being encouraged to interact with their environment.

700 years of staff service

Two new wards at PHC

DEDICATED staff from the county’s mental health and learning disabilities trust have had their decades of NHS service recognised.

Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) lauded staff have collectively worked for the NHS for more than 700 years.

Covering a wide range of clinical and non-clinical roles - from nursing to finance, housekeeping, psychiatrists, social workers, receptionists, administration and more – each member of staff has worked in the NHS for at least 20 years.

Mo O’Leary, Senior Acute Care Nurse at Peter Hodgkinson Centre (pictured), described as a ‘living legend’ by her colleagues, was just one of many to have their achievement acknowledged at the LPFT Long Service Awards.

Mo, who has been working in the NHS for 38 years, reflected: “It has been a real family story - both my parents worked in Lincoln supporting patients with mental health issues as did my sister Kate, and I remember thinking I wanted to do the same.

“My parents lived at St John’s Hospital, so when I was old enough I helped out where I could. I remember being in pantomimes and playing in the grounds. As soon as I was old enough I joined the NHS! I’ve been lucky enough to work across the country in a number of Trusts. I’ve worked across many services from older adults with dementia to those in crisis situations. I’ve always been passionate about mental health so this has been a perfect role for me.”

LPFT’s Long Service Awards recognise staff that have achieved the incredible feat of working in the NHS for 20, 30, and 40 years or even longer.

“We are so incredibly grateful to every longserving member of staff, for giving such passion, dedication and loyalty to our Trust and to the NHS,” said Sarah Connery, Chief Executive.

TWO new 19-bed inpatient wards are being built at the Peter Hodgkinson Centre in Lincoln.

Based at Lincoln County Hospital and run by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT), PHC provides hospital care for adults experiencing a crisis in their mental health.

This development is part of a £24 million investment to update facilities and provide single room en suite rooms for all patients, removing old and outdated shared dormitory wards.

Sarah Connery, Chief Executive said:"This is a major milestone in the project – and marks almost a year from when we are expecting the wards to officially open. We are really on a countdown now!

Gary Hillary, an Expert by Experience involved in the project, adds:: "Working with the team is a real privilege and it has proved pivotal in my own recovery journey. Throughout the project, our opinions have informed and steered the way our new wards will look and feel for future patients."

Learning to love vegetables WHAT’S the difference between snot and broccoli? You can’t get kids to eat broccoli!

“You can’t go play till you’ve finished your carrots. Just try a tiny bit. There’s pudding when you’ve finished your first course.”

Coaxing, rewards, punishments…

We can end up reinforcing the notion that healthy foods are really a bit of a chore.

Is it surprising that a third of children eat less than one portion of fresh fruit & veg per day - even though toddlers will put practically anything in their mouths?

It’s a big problem: poor diet creates problems for children and the adults that they will become, from their physical and mental health, to their concentration, behaviour and academic attainment, to their life chances and life expectancy.

Eating a varied diet matters particularly in childhood because tasting foods at a young age leads to a greater likelihood of liking them as an adult: increasing children’s willingness to try foods is a key part of developing a lifelong healthy diet.

Healthy Food Culture Washingborough Academy, a primary school near Lincoln recently hosted a meal for teachers, school leaders and school chefs, to explore how to create a healthy food culture in schools - and how help children to discover that they love fruit and vegetables.

As well as a tour of Washingborough’s impressive School Kitchen Garden and polytunnel, participants had a brief experience of the sights and smells of…

TastEd. Short for Taste Education. TastEd - is a young charity, with an approach to exploring new foods using all the senses harnessing children’s (and in this case, adults’) innate

curiosity.

Changing the narrative TastEd lessons create an environment conducive to trying new food; in which tasting is encouraged, but not demanded or rewarded.

TastEd lessons connect growing, cooking and eating; they take place both in the classroom and outdoors. The approach makes links with parents, families, communities and cultures food is inherently social!

By taking place away from the mealtimes, TastEd lessons take away the expectation that food has to be eaten, and gives children a chance to look at food in new ways: the lessons are fun, exploratory, positive experiences.

For example, an onion might be put into a sock, and a child gets to explore it purely through touch; or the child puts on headphones, to focus on the sound of the crunch of celery in their mouth, and perhaps contrast it with the squelch of a plum.

Taking off the pressure There are two golden rules of TastEd, which give children a whole new confidence around unfamiliar foods - nobody has to like and nobody has to try.

It takes off all the pressure.

A child who is cautious around new foods gets to explore a fruit or vegetable in all sorts

of ways, developing their senses. They get to talk about it, describe it, and extend their language skills in relation to their experience of food.

Children witness not only respected adults tasting, but also their peers.

And guess what? Most of them do try it many of them find that they like it - and even if they don’t, they discover their own taste preferences and gain confidence in trying new foods.

Spinach and avocado scramble Serves: 2 Prep: 5mins Cook: 5mins A combination that can do no wrong, registered nutritionist and avid foodie Rhiannon Lambert has created a spinach and avocado scramble for a simple and nutritious breakfast that will get you feeling ready to take on the day. Add a little chilli sauce for an extra zing.

Ingredients 8-10 cherry tomatoes 80g bag spinach leaves 1 avocado, skinned and stone removed Salt and ground black pepper 4 medium British Lion eggs 2 tbsp milk A drizzle of olive oil 2 slices wholemeal seeded bread Mixed seeds to serve A little chilli sauce (optional) Method Cut the cherry tomatoes in half and roughly chop the spinach leaves.

Mash the avocado on a plate and season with salt, pepper and chilli sauce to taste.

Crack the eggs into a jug, season, then add the milk

and beat together with a fork until smooth.

Heat a non-stick frying pan. Add the oil and tomatoes and sauté over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes or until softened. Push them to one side and add the spinach to the centre of the pan. Cook until the leaves are wilted.

Push the spinach to the edges of the pan and pour in the egg mixture. Cook over a low heat, stirring the eggs until they are scrambled to your liking.

Once it is set, remove from the heat and gently fold the eggs together with the tomatoes and spinach. Set aside.

On two plates, spread the toast with the mashed avocado then top with the scrambled eggs. Scatter with seeds and serve straight away whilst hot.

THE city’s biggest theatre event will be back at Lincoln Cathedral when 200 performers and a live orchestra perform The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Leading the Starring Lincoln Theatre Company production Quasimodo, the Hunchback himself, is University of Lincoln student Andre Buhagiar.

While studying for a degree in Performing Arts at the university, Andre will perform to an audience of nearly 10,000 people from May 23 – June 4.

There have been four previous sell-out productions at the cathedral

by Creative Director Ben Poole and his cast of Lincoln volunteer actors and crew, but this show is being supported by the university, lecturers’ expertise and students helping to bring it to life.

Andre said: “Second only to playing Quasimodo in Notre Dame, Lincoln Cathedral has to be the most fitting venue, it’s one of the world’s stunning buildings, with its own gargoyles and brilliant haunting features, not least the bells!

“To be performing the lead role in a musical of this scale is incredible. It could be described as terrifying but I’m hugely excited. Rehearsals are well under way and I’m so pleased to be performing alongside extremely talented people and many friends here at the university.”

Ben added: “These huge community productions have become iconic in the city and beyond. We know that the scale and the spirit of inclusivity in the production is also matched by the quality of it. Those that have seen West End and Broadway shows have also come to Lincoln for these major events and told us they are unforgettable experiences that offer a scale, energy and unique atmosphere even shows in London and New York cannot match.

ROCK and Metal fans can see around 70 bands over four days on three stages in May. The Call of the Wild Festival has invited established bands from as far afield as the US, Scandinavia and Europe to complement the best of UK talent.

Organisers have waited three years to bring back what was hailed as the Best New Rock Festival when it burst onto the circuit during its first year in 2019 – it returns to the Lincolnshire Showground on May 19-22.

Don’t pass up chance to win Steve’s football book PASSES Down The Line is not just a football book it’s also about times with friends and family, according to its author Steve Holt.

The former Lincoln lad has a passion for football and, beyond his wildest dreams, enjoyed mixing with some of the greatest names in the modern game.

His real soccer ‘career’ started after his amateur playing days were over and he became Chairman of Peterborough United and an elected Director of The Football League over 20 years ago.

His book, Passes Down The Line, is a lighthearted look at football written from his own experiences and family connections to three professional football clubs: Lincoln City, Manchester United and Peterborough United.

With a foreward written by Barry Fry and Sir Alex Ferguson it is a nostalgic narrative of the game through the the ages with anecdotes from Victorian times to the present day.

The sport that shaped Steve’s life, started with the author’s Great Great Uncle Fred (GGUF) who was a Lincoln City player in the 1890s.

“At the time for a brief period the team were recognised as Lincoln City Swifts – swift to exit any league that they entered. In fixture number 17 of the 1897-97 season on 23 January 1897 GGUF played away at Meadow Lane and suffered his heaviest defeat of the season being

trounced 8-0 by Notts County. The feeling was they were lucky to get nil. The Lincoln goalie was nicknamed ‘Jigsaw’ as each time the opposition got into the box he went to pieces.”

The chapter ‘Munich, Malmo and Me’ refers to Steve’s date of birth in 1958 and covers the Manchester Utd air disaster and the FIFA World Cup. “As a young boy I was in my pram already being a good dribbler – as Lincoln City’s manager, Bill Anderson, was wheeling his shopping trolley across the Radion supermarket car park on Newport.

He noticed a young lady struggling with her shopping basket whilst pushing Steve in his pram. He stopped and asked: “Can you manage dear?’ To which my Mum replied, ‘No way, Mr Anderson you got yourself into this trouble, don’t ask me to sort out the mess at Lincoln City.’”

STANLEY SMITH

County artists help nurture Stanley’s talent SEVEN-year-old Stanley Smith loves being creative with a particular focus on art.

“I like doing all kinds of art – my favourites are clay and abstract art.”

Having previously been a pupil at a local independent school, Stanley started to struggle with the rigidity and inflexibility of school life. The outcome was a battle most days to attend school and a general feeling of unhappiness and anxiety for Stanley as Monday approached. His double art lesson on a Friday was often the only thing that kept him going towards to the end of the school week.

Stanley explained: “The best thing about art is that nobody tells me what to do, I get to pick what I like to make, and different artists help me.”

Following a switch to home education, Stanley is now thriving with the flexibility and autonomous nature of learning and there’s pure joy when he is busy doing art.

“I don’t think about what I’m doing, I just do it”.

Stanley’s proud mum Danielle added: “Following a switch to learning at home, it has given him the opportunity to really run with his interests and enable his creative side to flourish – allowing him to be who he wants to be in an environment where he is comfortable.

“We’ve been spending time visiting local galleries, particularly Sam Scorer where we’ve met many wonderful artists who have taken the time to chat with Stanley. It’s given him new skills and experience of building relationships with various artists across Lincolnshire for which we’re really grateful.”

Asked about the works he has been producing Stanley said: “My favourite painting is the trees in the night sky – it’s so calming and peaceful. I also enjoyed making the house out of clay – I used a Japanese technique where there was one block of clay and I carved out of it.You take the roof off the house, put incense in and then put the roof back on so smoke comes out of the chimney!”

Stanley will be taking part in the second WILD exhibition as a guest exhibitor, with abstract landscape and wildlife paintings and sculptures at Sam Scorer Gallery from November 14 for two weeks.

summer home RACHEL SHAW, LINCOLNSHIRE WILDLIFE TRUST MANY of us have put up bird boxes in the garden. The rectangular boxes with a small round hole in the front.

These are designed for blue tits and great tits in the hope that they replicate a hollow in a tree that these birds would usually use.

Blue tits and great tits aren’t too fussy about the shape of the hollow and readily build their nests in the boxes we provide. But what about some of the most iconic birds of summer: swallows (tops) swifts (main picture) and house martins?

Swifts, swallows and house martins tell us that it’s summer. They have amazing lifestories that connect us to southern Africa where they spend the winter. They fly all the way back to nest on or in our houses and outbuildings. Watching and hearing these birds soar through the sky is an uplifting spectacle.

However, losing them is fast becoming a real threat. All three are struggling and, house martins and swifts are in serious decline.

Swifts and house martins were recently added to the UK Red List of Conservation Concern.

The Red List keeps track of how different 28

species are doing, any that are rated ‘red’ need urgent action. It is estimated that over half of our house martin population has been lost since 1969 and that almost 60% of UK swifts have disappeared over the last 25 years.

There are many reasons for this including huge declines of their insect food, the loss of habitats and nesting sites, and the impacts of climate change – with extreme weather affecting breeding cycles and migration. But because these birds live amongst us, we can help in our own homes and gardens.

The Wildlife Trusts and RHS are encouraging gardeners to install nest boxes and create habitats that boost insect numbers to help swallows, swifts, and martins as part of a new campaign: Wild About Highflyers.

There are three top tips on how to help: 1. Create a ‘bog garden’ with plants like marsh-bedstraw and purple loosestrife. Bog gardens provide valuable habitat for a wealth of insects that could form a vital source of food for birds. A bog garden or pond with muddy edges will also provide the mud that that swallows and house martins can use to build their nests.

2. Add a swift box to an existing house or include a swift brick in any kind of new

build. Ideally, swift boxes face north/northeast to help regulate the internal temperature and are at least five metres above ground. It’s also possible to buy artificial nests for swallows and martins.

House martins will nest in groups so having one or two artificial nests may encourage more natural nest building nearby.

3. Let a patch of grass grow long, providing vital habitat and food for insects and other wildlife. This is the simplest of all and will encourage more wildlife into your garden.

Your garden may be small, perhaps it feels like your actions won’t make a difference.

Try not to think of your garden in isolation.

Incredibly, almost 90% of UK households have a garden, that’s over 20 million gardens that cover a larger area than all 2,300 Wildlife Trust nature reserves combined.

Together, by managing our gardens creatively and thoughtfully, we make a huge difference to our struggling wildlife.

Bees, butterflies, blossom and birdsong in the city WORDS AND IMAGES: DAHLIA LEE IF you were to step out into Liquorice Park just as the morning light begins to creep across the night sky, you would find yourself surrounded by an astounding cacophony of birdsong.

Throughout April the dawn chorus heralds daybreak, and each morning the orchestra seems to expand, the tunes increasing in complexity and intensity.

It is a fleeting occurrence when nature reigns supreme, a moment so easily missed in that brief somnolent half-light. As the sun rises, the magic spell is broken, the bird song fades away and the traffic roar builds up in the awakening city.

And so begins each day here in spring.Yes, spring at last. After the long plodding journey through the darker months, heads bent and shoulders hunched against the elements, we’ve arrived here Winter-weary

and ready for lighter days. This month the season breaks into gallop, and it is a fine time to pause, sit back, and observe nature taking the reigns as, with deft skill and aptitude, she paints a wholly new and exquisite scene, with joy, enthusiasm and positivity infused in every brushstroke.

The seasonal page has turned revealing a technicolour pop-up book of new light and colour. The vestiges of last year, bare branches and fallen tattered leaves, are quickly swallowed up in a flourish of vivid new growth.

Bright leaves and blossom burst out above a rising lush carpet of cow parsley, nettles, sticky weed and spring flowers. As one bloom fades another opens, and with always something new to catch the eye, the park in spring is a nature spotter’s paradise.

Among all this new greenery there is a constant flutter and flurry of birds, who are intent on nest building, incubating their eggs and rearing their offspring. This is a busy time for them, and if you ever needed a stronger resolve to ditch pesticides from your garden, you only have to watch the bluetits efficiently cramming their beaks with grubs, caterpillars and aphids to feed their young to realise that chemical insecticide is a thoroughly bad idea.

So if you take a few moments to sit in the park on a sunny spring day -with the spectacular blossom and verdant new growth glowing in the sunlight, the gentle hum of bees and flutter of birds all around, sweeping swathes of nodding daffodils, grass studded with bright daisy stars, an occasional red spark of a ladybird and the swirling exuberant aerial love-dance of newly emerged butterflies above you -it is easy to forget you’re in the city at all.

But, however absorbed we become we can hardly be unaware of events in the wider world, and it is all too easy to feel hopeless against a tide of ever-prevalent bad news.

While time spent in nature can improve wellbeing and help calm clamorous minds in difficult times, sometimes just sitting isn’t enough.

Individually we can’t solve the world’s problems but we can each make a small difference. A great way to do this is through gardening- responsible wildlife friendly

gardening is good for us and good for the planet, and this is the perfect time to start!

And one thing we will be doing, and we would urge everyone else to do this spring, is to plant some sunflower seeds. They are wonderfully simple joyful things to grow

and the flower heads make perfect natural bird feeders, but also, as the national flower of Ukraine, nothing could be more fitting than filling our parks and gardens with these bright rays of hope and solidarity.

Flat Cap Diaries with Liz Lucas

Growing your own is a matter of taste THE time has come to get busy on the allotment, although we have already done a deal of digging and sowing.

We now have two more sections to plant up. These will be planted up with potatoes and onions.Yes, I know, cheap enough to buy but so very satisfying to grow. Tomatoes are up and almost ready to be planted in the poly tunnel. Not so many this year, to try and discourage the fungal problems we had last year.

I am only growing the common stuff, cabbages, leeks, sweetcorn, turnips, broccoli, beans and peas, although I am giving melons a go in the poly tunnel.

My expectations are low on that score. Getting good crops from anything takes time and patience. Experience counts for much.

It must be said that growing your own does not really save you money. By the time you have bought blood, fish and bone to feed the soil, mulch layers, such as compost or the like, spent money on hoops and netting, spare watering cans, feed for the greenhouse plants and so on and so on, the amount you save by growing crops can be negligible.

I don’t do it for the savings, I do it because of the taste, and the fact

that I know my crops, poo though some of them may be, have not been blasted with insecticide, or boosted by artificial fertilisers and they have not travelled hundreds of miles.

The bottom line is that home grown produce tastes better; in fact it sometimes tastes completely different, because it is fresh from the ground and has not spent the last week either sweating in plastic or sitting in a plane or on a shelf, wilting.

It is not everyone’s privilege to be able to rent an allotment and not everyone has a garden. Many people may be disinterested in growing food, but everyone should be concerned about the quality of their food. It has improved and more and more food is organically grown but still not enough. We need not to be complacent about our food.

We are, as they say, what we eat.

Lincoln Climate Commission

Uni leads the way towards Net Zero

BY REBECCA HARDY THE University of Lincoln is leading the way for climate action in the city.

As one of the founding partners of Lincoln Climate Commission it declared a Climate Emergency in 2019 along with City of Lincoln Council and has been working to improve its environmental impact making changes to become more sustainable.

“We’ve achieved the EcoCampus ‘Platinum’ accreditation for environmental management, as well as the Hedgehog-friendly campus ‘Gold’ award for the creation of wildlife friendly spaces on our Estate,” said Rebecca Forster, Delivery Group Member at Lincoln Climate Commission and Sustainability Manager at University of Lincoln.

“The University is improving the energy efficiency of our buildings and ensuring that new buildings are low carbon.

“For example, the Ross Lucas Medical School is the most sustainable building on our Estate and is designed to be thermally efficient and to generate up to 20% of the energy it uses. The building recently won two regional ‘sustainable building of the year’ awards.”

The Lincoln Climate Commission (LCC) was co-founded in 2019

by Dr Andrew Kythreotis, Geoff Stratford and David Greenop, the latter both from community response groupTransition Lincoln, through an initial approach to Kate Bell, Climate Change Manager at the city council.

“University involvement in the Commission is now at a critical stage in post-Covid lockdown, as members of the Commission are now working towards engaging the general public more closely in local climate governance,” said Dr Kythreotis of the Department of Geography.

“Over the spring of 2022 staff from the university involved in the Commission won £25k from the QR Strategic Priorities Fund to produce a complete set of community engagement tools and materials for improved communication, information dissemination and collaboration with the general public.”

LCC is working towards a Net Zero roadmap for the city and with institutions like the University of Lincoln’s support, targets such as carbon reduction are hoped to be met in the future.

“We are currently developing a pathway to meet our ambitious carbon reduction target of 60% by 2030/31 and to be Net Zero by 2040,” explained Rebecca Forster.

“By working together with students, staff and our local community, we hope to be able to make a valuable contribution to climate action and engagement, via improvements of our own Estate, the creation of knowledge and research to support climate action, and by supporting our students to make their own contribution to sustainability.”

The Commission aims to produce a plan of actions, research and investment this spring, to help achieve its Net Zero goals for

Lincoln. l The city is one of 307 local authority areas out of 404 (75 per cent) across the country that have made a Climate Emergency Declaration.

It is an acknowledgement that global warming exists and the existing measures did not go far enough to tackle the increasingly disastrous consequences of climate change.

A declaration commits the authorities to treat the issue as a matter of urgency.

Oxford Dictionary chose climate emergency as the word of the year 2019 and defines the term as "a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it."

Snapshots of the Past

Ivan the great science master bids farewell to Biology Hut LINCOLN Christ’s Hospital School archivist PETER HARROD continues to explore its pictorial past.

THIS photograph shows the legendary Lincoln School science master, the late Mr Herbert Ivan Sexton, amid the remains of the Biology Hut’.

It was situated in the grounds of Lincoln School from 1957 to 1974 and then Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School (LCHS) until its demolition some forty years after its construction.

The hut, also shown below in its prime, was originally intended to provide ‘temporary’ accommodation for biology, storage facilities for apparatus, and a sixth form study area and common room for the ‘A’ level science students.

As with so many ‘temporary’ buildings, the Biology Hut served Lincoln School, and later Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School (LCHS), for many years beyond its planned lifetime, and came to be associated with the name of Ivan Sexton, who had been appointed to the staff of Lincoln school in 1954 to teach biology and general science.

Our records in the Garton Archive at LCHS show that Herbert Ivan Sexton (he was known by his second name) was born in 1930.

He attended King’s School, Grantham and Stamford School as a pupil, and went on to read botany and zoology at Durham University.

He graduated with a BSc degree in 1953 and completed his Teaching Diploma at the Department of Education in Durham the following year. Lincoln School was his first teaching appointment, and he retired from LCHS in the late 1980s.

He was originally appointed as a probationary house master, for which he was given a termly allowance of £10 as a supplement to his salary.

One interesting story about the hut during the later stages of its life at LCHS was related to me by Mr Simon Button, a laboratory technician at LCHS for many years.

He told me that the storeroom, referred to above, contained all manner of exotic resources required for biological study, and many of those, including body parts such as hearts and lungs, were kept in refrigerators.

One summer holiday there was an extended power cut, and staff returned to face the highly pungent smells of decaying flesh!

Clearing up the mess would not have been an enviable task!

My story ends with the demise of the Biology Hut which, despite its ‘temporary’ and unglamorous lifetime, had served both Lincoln School and LCHS with distinction for many years beyond its life expectation.

Ivan Sexton, no doubt with mixed feelings, and surrounded by the debris of what had been his working environment for 35 years, is forcing a quizzical smile in the picture which perhaps concealed his true feelings. There is some doubt about the date of the demolition, but my informants believe that the event took place during the early 1990s, which suggests that Ivan returned to LCHS after his retirement to participate in its ceremonial destruction.

His dog appears to be utterly bored by the occasion.

Many of the shop’s staff lived on the premises in dormitories: in 1851, there were 21 assistants living-in, 12 males and nine females.

Land was acquired in Mint Lane (later Street) and in 1869 two four-bedroom houses were built, now with the windows and doors blacked out. Male shop assistants lived in these houses, and their female colleagues were accommodated at 84 Newland.

Joseph Collingham owned the business until his death in 1873.

Decorated for the Royal Show in 1907. By then, his son Joseph Mawer Collingham, was running it.

He introduced Guest speaker Antony Dufort (left) is a sculputor and artist whose works include busts of the Queen and former prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron.

He told guests about his career and the project in the city, which is the statue of Lincoln Mathematician George Boole (1815-1864), which will be erected in front of the railway station in a few weeks’ time, showing him teaching two children.

Join Jubilee Probus for enlightening luncheons THE Jubilee Probus Club of Lincoln offers its congratulations to the Rotary Club of Lincoln on its celebration of a century of service and fellowship.

Like many Probus organisations, the Jubilee, club was formed by former Rotary members who used to retire at the age of 55 or 60.

The Jubilee Club began in 1977 as an off shoot of the Lincoln Probus which had a lengthy waiting list.

Co-op chief announces URSULA Lidbetter will retire as Chief Executive Officer of the Lincolnshire Co-op at the end of 2022.

Her career with the Society spans 37 years as Ursula started in 1985 as a buyer and department manager.

She is in her 18th year as CEO leading 220 varied outlets, which recorded sales of over £355m in 2020/21, but has also played a pivotal role in other leading county organisations including Visit

Lincoln, Lincoln BIG and the Greater Lincolnshire Enterprise Partnership. Ursula chaired the latter organisation from its inception in 2010, stepping down in 2019 after serving the maximum term in the role.

She’s also been at the helm of major projects including the creation of the Lincoln Science and Innovation Park and The Cornhill Quarter development in Lincoln. She received her OBE in 2019 for services to the local economy.

This year will see Ursula turn 60 and, after almost two thirds of her life working for Lincolnshire Co-op, she feels it’s the right time to retire and spend more time with family.

She said: “It’s a privilege to work alongside my 2,900 colleagues to lead this special business, where we aim to make life better in our communities every day.

“It’s also wonderful to collaborate with many like-minded people in organisations across Lincolnshire and beyond to bring forward schemes making such a difference.

“In due course, I will hand over to my successor who will take us into the next stage of our development.”

Lincolnshire Co-op’s Board of Directors will be conducting a recruitment process for the new CEO over coming months.

Chair David Cowell said: “The Board would like to thank Ursula for the huge contribution she has made to the success of the society during her time here. She will be leaving our co-op in great shape to move on to its next chapter, based upon the strong legacy that has been built over 161 years of trading.

“In the meantime, we have a busy programme of work for 2022 and look forward to delivering this under Ursula’s expert leadership.”

Why P&O Ferries broke the law HELEN MOLLOY, EMPLOYMENT PARTNER, SHAKESPEARE MARTINEAU P&O has made the decision to make more than 800 of its workers redundant with immediate effect, replacing them with cheaper agency staff.

The top bosses show no remorse for their actions and while it might be that their decision saves a sinking ship short term, the ferry provider may find itself sailing against serious litigation, staff shortages and a customer boycott.

Why was it unlawful?

P&O’s decision to fire 800 staff with immediate effect appears to contravene the requirements needed for a normal mass redundancy.

Where an employer plans to make 20 or more redundancies, there is a requirement for a period of consultation with employee representatives, such as a trade union. That period is 45 days, where 100 or more redundancies are planned in any one location. As such, P&O would be expected to undergo this process before making any mass dismissals.

If employees are made redundant they can bring a claim of unfair dismissal in the employment tribunal, with the maximum compensation being up to a year’s salary in most cases. If they were not paid their notice or a statutory redundancy payment, claims could also be brought for these payments.

Trade unions can also bring a claim about P&O’s failure to carry out appropriate collective consultation in advance of the dismissals, with a potential award of up to 90 days’ gross pay per affected employee if the claim succeeded.

It appears that P&O will be offering ‘enhanced severance packages’ to staff to compensate them for their dismissals, but whether that offer will be sufficient to prevent significant litigation awaits to be seen.

What can we learn?

Prevention is always better than cure, so business owners should be keeping a close eye on businesses finances.

Redundancy is one cost saving option but not the only one: there are alternatives such as consulting with employees about changes to terms and conditions (such as a pay cut), refinancing and asset sales, but taking advice early can be the difference between insolvency or reputational ruin and keeping your business afloat.

No bounce in Spring Statement ONCE upon a time, The Budget, which was about tax, was in spring and we had an Autumn Statement, which was about spending plans.

However, back in the autumn, we had a budget, which hardly talked about tax, and now a spring statement that talked a lot about tax (or at least the tax that everyone pretends is not a tax, National insurance).

DAVID NICHOLSON, DIRECTOR AND SHARPE (LINCOLN) LTD Truly, the world is upside down, and the backdrop to this Spring Statement was the war in Ukraine and the impact that this is having on the cost of living crisis that was already brewing before Putin launched his invasion.

If you are as old as me, then you will remember the inflation that we had back in the 1970s, which was also sparked in no small part by war, in that case the Arab- Israeli conflict in 1973.

So how did the Chancellor do? The general feeling seems to have been that none of the measures that he announced will address the issues that households will face from rapidly increasing energy and food prices. His headline measure was to bring the National insurance threshold up to match the income tax threshold £12,570 (though not until 6th July).

So where does that leave the health and social care policy, which was to be funded by a 1.25% increase in national Insurance?

That increase was supposed to be ring fenced for health and social care; will it

still be now that the chancellor has handed the rise back to many people (only those earning in excess of £35,000 will be paying more contributions in 2022-23)?

A reduction of 5p a litre in fuel duty was the other big headline, undermined by the fact that many of the forecourts had put more than this on the price of a litre that same morning?

When the vaccines were rolled out there was brief spell of euphoria with the expectation that we would be entering a “roaring twenties” period of growth similar to that which followed the Spanish flu epidemic 100 years ago.

I certainly hope we do not get the alternative, which was the deep recession in the early 80s that followed that inflationary period. It is a tough time for households and for business.

None of this sounds very hopeful, does it?
