Designs for life IT’S never too early to get a designer involved in a new kitchen or bathroom according to the team at Luna Living.

When its new 5000 sq ft showroom reopens on June 18 visitors will be able to see just what can be created by using Luna Living’s free design service and its high calibre ranges of kitchens, bathrooms and tiles.

At Luna Living’s launch of revamped showroom The major refurbishment marks 10 years of Luna Living and will accommodate the growth of the business while creating flexible display areas for its premium ranges. Owner and director Mark Franklin explained the showroom will inspire people.

It will enable them to visualise what can be achieved in their homes, while the design service will facilitate or elevate clients’ ideas.

Savvy shoppers’ paradise THE Warehouse is St Barnabas’ biggest retail project yet.

With more than 25-years’ retail experience the hospice’s shops have remained a wellloved feature in Lincolnshire towns as other High Street names have come and gone.

Now savvy shoppers facing rising prices in the cost of living can get home essentials, stylish fashion bargains and indulge their need for retail therapy.

In December 2021 the hospice’s donations sorting space on Cardinal Close, Lincoln, was repurposed to become the biggest opportunity to shop smart, ethically and support the care for thousands of people each year in Lincolnshire.

The unit was transformed into an industrial style, fuss-free space to provide thrifty shoppers pre-loved clothes, furniture, homewares and electronics all in one place.

Amelia Chambers, Head of Marketing at St Barnabas explained: “We have been overwhelmed with the success so far, the footfall, donations and sales have surpassed all our expectations.”

Lincoln Bloggers kickstarted the launch of The Warehouse at a lock-in event.

“The finds of the night included a Burberry Mac, the iconic Century book, a grandfather clock and two pairs of Dr Martens. The group helped us reach over 40,000 people on social media throughout the first weekend alone.“ This space is big, so expect the unexpected. Branded clothes and accessories piled high, and furniture styled perfectly ready to be upcycled. The Warehouse is home to a library style book shop, the popular £1 shop and drive-thru donation drop off too.

What’s more eBay and Depop also operate from the site. Depop is a selling site, much like eBay but focuses on designer goods, preloved clothing and higher value accessories. The charity shop team sorts through the donations and highlight the ‘best bits’ to buy online.

Amelia added: “Every item bought goes directly to support hospice care for more people in Lincolnshire. This is shopping with a conscience too. The St Barnabas Team have already saved 1000’s of treasures from landfill to list online. Fancy doing your bit to save the planet, shop ethically and give back to charity? Items will be available from June 1.”

Getting a buzz from the bus Chartered Certified Accountants

MY student days were spent in Sheffield ­ city of buses.

You could get anywhere for 10p it seemed. My bunch of would­be journos lived up Ecclesall Road about as far across the city from our college as it was possible to be without actually going into Derbyshire. It was also two bus journeys each way ­ never a problem.

Sheffield spoiled me with its bus service. I learned to drive quite late compared to my peers and then only because my career would not have progressed without a licence.

The Business Wife is just the opposite. A farmer’s daughter she probably learned to drive a tractor when she was a toddler ­ she was certainly whizzing around Lincoln in an LSG Fiesta in her teens.

Now she has discovered buses and it’s like a whole new world has opened up to her. It’s a world that doesn’t rely on taxis, leaving her car at mine, paying for parking or even the parking fine.

She came into town on the bus for early evening lubrication one Friday and even took pictures to prove it.

Now she’s got some excursions planned with her real

spouse and it appears other people have had a similar revelation about the humble bus.

Friends took the No. 50 for an afternoon in Louth recently and we hope it’s a trend that continues because as Rachel’s picture shows her first bus wasn’t exactly packed. Yes I’m banging on about using it or losing again.

Let’s face it taxis are so scarce in Lincoln that you have to book days in advance ­ may as well take the bus.

There’s also another useful public vehicle I should mention here ­ the city’s tour bus, which starts operating seven days a week in June until the end of September.

It’s a facility we shouldn’t leave just to the tourists ­ the actual tour may take just under an hour, but you can hop on and off the nine stops all day ­ well between 10.30am and 3.30pm. It’s got to be worth a lazy day out around the city over the summer ­ stopping off for coffee at the new Cathedral Visitor Centre and then lunch on the Brayford.

Summer closure for £1m improvements at Lincoln hospice THE Inpatient Unit at St Barnabas Hospice on Nettleham Road, Lincoln, will close during the summer for essential maintenance and improvement works.

Construction will cost around £1m and start in early June with planned completion by mid-October this year.The charity is committed to continuing to provide outstanding care to their patients and their families during the work.

Clinical staff will be redeployed to work in the community alongside existing community services or other inpatient settings across the county.

Michelle Webb, Director of Patient Care, said: “I am delighted that we have a confirmed date for these essential works to improve our patient and families’ experience at our Inpatient Unit in Lincoln.

“To be able to complete this work as efficiently and safely as possible, our care from the site will be paused until October 2022. We are working very closely with our contractor and project delivery team to minimise disruption to our patients, staff, and the wider healthcare community.

“Everyone connected with the Hospice is committed to providing the best facilities and infrastructure for our patients, their families, and our staff. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our fully refurbished unit in early autumn 2022.”

St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire is one of the largest charities in the county, supporting more than 10,500 patients and families each year.

The charity provides Inpatient support and community care through Wellbeing Centres in Lincoln, Boston, Spalding, Louth, and Grantham. The remedial work is part of the hospice’s longterm ambition to maintain high-quality care for the people of Lincolnshire.

This is charity’s 40th anniversary year and its ambition is for everyone in Lincolnshire to have ‘good death’, through offering more Hospice at Home care and rejuvenating its facilities throughout the county.

Hike a BIG achievement for charity fundraisers MEMBERS of the Lincoln BIG team have taken raising £1,500 for charity all in their stride.

Sue Bell,Yvette Hall, Olivia Dexter and Jenny Damp completed the Macmillan Cancer Support Norfolk Coast Mighty Hike in May, a feat that saw them walk 26.2 miles in 8 hours 49 mins and cover 64,686 steps “It was a tough challenge, but with a beautiful route, the weather was hot and sunny, we couldn’t have asked for a better day.

“We started as a team and we finished as a team, supporting each other through the highs and lows during the 26 miles.

We kept each other going throughout the day.

“We have all recently been touched by cancer in one way or another so we were keen to get involved in this fundraising opportunity. “ We’re taking part in the Mighty Hikes to show our support and appreciation for the wonderful care Macmillan offers to patients and relatives in need after a cancer diagnosis. Because cancer can affect people’s life in so many ways, we want to help Macmillan to do whatever it takes to give people the support they need.”

Other members of the team at the Business Improvement Group, including Operations Manager Lee Roberts will be taking part in the Yorkshire Dales Half Marathon in July.

Separated and want to take the kids abroad?

WITH the school holidays only a few weeks away it is important that separated parents know their rights in relation to taking their children abroad.

They must have permission from everybody with parental responsibility for the child, or a court order, to be able to take the child abroad.

It is child abduction to take your offspring abroad without permission or a court order.

A parent with a child arrangements order in place that confirm residence of the child is able to take the child abroad for up to 28 days without permission, providing there is no court order which prevents this.

It’s advisable to inform the other person with parental responsibility with full travel details and provide addresses and contact details at the holiday accommodation.

A letter from the person with parental responsibility for the child is usually enough to show there is permission to take them abroad.

Such a letter may be required at a UK or foreign border, or if there’s a dispute about taking a child abroad. The letter should include the other person’s contact details and details about the trip.

It also helps if there is: l evidence of the relationship with the child, eg a birth or adoption certificate; l a divorce or marriage certificate, if you are a single parent but your family name is different from the child’s.

Get permission from a court If the other person with parental responsibility will not give their permission, it is possible to apply to the court for a specific issue order. Full details of the trip will need to be provided as well as contact information for everybody that has parental responsibility for the child.

The information will need to include the date of departure, when and how the child is returning as well as contact details of people with parental responsibility staying in the UK. More information will be needed for taking children abroad for a longer trip, for example the education they will receive while they are abroad.

A parent’s perspective of GCSE journey and beyond

AS May approached it dawned on me that my second born was about to start her GCSEs. My first-born missed sitting the exams due to Covid and I suddenly had a sense of panic.

Was she ready? Should this Year 11 cohort even be sitting their exams having had so many disruptions to their learning?

But they are happening, so I just need to make sure my daughter has all the support she needs to get herself through the next few months and to get her ready for the next chapter – her A-Levels.

The fact she wants to do A-levels meant we did not need to understand all options available post GCSEs, but I am aware not everyone wants to, nor is able to consider the A-level route, so what else is out there?

I am lucky that my job means I know about the options available to school leavers and what the raise in participation age means.

There is not a lot of support or guidance out there for parents, so in this article I hope to help those who are in this position too.

Children are now expected to stay in some form of education or training until the age of 18. This could be A levels, College, Apprenticeships or Traineeships.

I think most of us know about A levels and mainstream colleges, but perhaps not so much regarding Apprenticeships and Traineeships and they are such great options to consider.

So, what are they? Traineeships are perfect for 16-18 year olds who are motivated to work but have little or no work experience.

They offer sector-based skills and knowledge and are a great pathway to apprenticeships, further study and jobs.

There is a work placement at the heart of the programme as well as a really diverse and engaging seven-week training programme aimed at getting students ready for the world of work. They also support maths and English where needed.

Apprenticeships are available to 16-year-olds and above and are perfect for those wanting a more vocational route where you learn valuable skills while being employed, earning a wage and gaining a recognised qualification. We match students with local employers and support our students throughout their whole journey.

LAUNCH FEST is a celebration of new art, dance, music, theatre and performance from the students of the University of Lincoln’s Fine and Performing Arts courses.

Taking place until July 5 the festival showcases new work from emerging professional artists, performers, and creatives – all made as part of their studies.

“Audiences are welcome onto the Brayford Campus and to events across Lincoln as part of this exciting festival of new arts and culture, featuring exhibitions, music, dance, new writing, contemporary theatre, and more,” said Rachel Baynton, senior lecturer and Creative Engagement Producer.

First year students from the BA Drama & Theatre Ensemble Show course will be presenting work on the LPAC Main Stage for the first time, created under the direction of professional theatre performers, while the third years will be showing their final Degree Show pieces, entirely created, written, performed and directed by the cast.

Look out for There’s a Shark in the Thames (June 8) – which looks at the increasing problem of climate change – and The Due Dilligence Scouts June 9) a dark and comical look at society and growing up.

The Project Space Plus Gallery on campus will be throwing open its doors on June 10 to coincide with a celebratory event to mark the festival and raise a toast to the hard work and talent LSFPA Fine Arts students have shown over the year.

LONG term resident Nero the donkey is celebrating his 24th birthday this month.

Once a Sponsorship Star with a big fan following, little Nero (above right and below) is a well-loved character at Bransby Horses and is now enjoying a well-deserved retirement.

He lives with his brother Domino (above left) within their male herd, who are all now out on their summer pasture and on view to visitors.

Rebecca, who is team leader at the Visitor Centre Yard where the donkey herds live, said: “Nero is really well at the moment and in a good place with his health. He has liver disease and needs regular medication and is monitored carefully by our vets.

“He is a real character but he can be grumpy so we have to be careful to gauge his mood before we ask him to do anything.

“For his birthday he enjoyed a donkey friendly cake made from fibre nuts and carrots.”

Rebecca said Nero often struggles with the sun during the warmer months, due to the effects of his liver disease on his coat.

If the weather gets too warm, he either wears a fly rug to protect his skin from the sun or spends the day in a cool stable with Domino.

Liver disease in horses and donkeys is commonly caused by poisonous plants, such as Ragwort.

They will usually only eat poisonous plants when there is not enough grass or forage.

It isn’t known what caused Nero’s liver problems but it was a condition he arrived with at Bransby Horses when he was rescued almost 13 years ago.

Visitors to one of the the UK’s largest equine welfare charities can meet Nero and his pals at the sanctuary north of Lincoln.

Visiting is free and there are miles of picturesque, pushchair friendly walkways and an adventure play park for children.

Every month sees a new activity trail for families to enjoy. Tickets are just £3.50 per child, which includes an activity sheet and prize.

In June there is a royal theme to the trail and for July children are invited to become Donkey Detectives and solve the clues around their site where many of the animals live.

Lincoln Jazz Festival July 15-17

Local talent joins international stars JAZZ takes centre stage in Lincoln Cathedral on July 15-17 when this historic landmark plays host to a weekend festival of music featuring leading artists from the UK and overseas.

The weekend opens on Friday, July 15 with the acclaimed London Community Gospel Choir and closes with the Darius Brubeck Quartet on the Sunday with a host of musical treats including singer Claire Martin OBE with pianist David Newton, New York Brass Band, DerekNash Quartet, Dennis Rollins' Velocity Trio,' Dave O'Higgins, Peggy's All Stars play Blue Note, Andrew Wood Trio and Lincoln's Jazz Machine youth orchestra.

Brought to the city by Lincoln Jazz in partnership with Lincoln Cathedral with support from Chestnut Homes, Banks Long & Co and Just Audi VW and East Midlands Jazz, all the events will take place in and around the building making full use of the new Visitor Centre close to Lincoln Castle, the famous Steep Hill, Bailgate shopping and many cafes, restaurants, hotels and pubs.

Weekend tickets includes a Zone 1 seat in the Nave , Early Bird - £90 available up to June 30, standard £96.

City backdrop for

BY REBECCA POOLE INDEPENDENT feature film, Mind-Set, which was shot entirely in Lincoln, has recently celebrated its UK cinema release.

“It was very much a community effort. Locations include BGU University Campus, UoL Campus, Lincoln Hotel, West Common, St Barnabas charity shop on Monks Road, and some West End streets including Richmond Road and Rudgard Lane,” explained Mikey Murray, writer, director and producer of the film.

“Local support was offered by Stokes and Park Riding School - we filmed with their horse Carrie, people say never work with animals on a film but Carrie was not a diva and our actor Eilis fell in love with her.”

Mikey added the West End community of Lincoln supported the production, including St. Faith’s Church Hall and Oakley’s Café Bistro. Students and staff from the Lincoln School of Film, where he is a senior lecturer in Film Production, made up the crew.

The comedy/drama won Best UK Feature Film at Manchester Film Festival in March 2022 where the film premiered.

The film stars actor Steve Oram known for film roles such as Sightseers, and TV such as Dr Who and Killing Eve who is joined on-screen by American actor Eilis Cahill, whose characters’ relationship is tested due to both their own insecurities and being stuck in a house together.

The film also features cameos from Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs, Scottish talent Robin Laing and Trainspotting star Pauline Lynch, along with Lincolnshire-born Julia Deakin who has appeared in

“At its heart our film shows ordinary lives and relationships on screen, and the film deals with issues around mental health. I was inspired to make the film as a comment on mental health and depression, as I believe it is often misrepresented in mainstream media,” said Mikey.

Following the initial cinema screening of Mind-Set at Everyman Lincoln on the May 24, the film is set for general release in selected UK cinemas.

Mikey has programmed for several film festivals including the renowned ‘Slamdance’ film festival in Utah and is a programmer for Aesthetica Film Festival in York.

He is the creator and festival director for ‘Indie-Lincs’, Lincoln’s international film festival that is designed to champion low and micro-budget films and their filmmakers.

Mind-Set is not the lecturer’s only award-winning film as in 2017 his short film Natalie, which was funded by the BFI, had its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival where he was also selected for the event’s talent lab. It went on to win the FargoMoorhead LGBT Film Festival.

Scandi take on a summer favourite

IN the first of a series of articles by The Scandi Chef (see bio on opposite page) we give readers the chance to try a summer favourite with a Swedish twist – potato salad.

“Midsummer takes place in June and is a celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It is one of the most celebrated holidays in Sweden,” explained Magnus Werdenskog.

“A maypole is created and raised during the day, which people gather around to dance and sing.

“Besides the herring and the snaps, a must is a really good potato salad.

This salad is great for the summer.

Have it like it is or with meat or fish.

Ingredients Serves 6 as a side or 4 as a main 800 g boiled potatoes (use a small

waxy type) 2 tbsp cold pressed rapeseed oil 100 ml mayonnaise (preferably homemade) 100 ml sour cream 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp white wine vinegar 3 salad onions 2 hard boiled eggs 10 radishes 1 pot parsley 4 green asparagus grated horseradish (fresh or in a jar) salt and pepper to season Method Cut the boiled potatoes into thick slices and place them on a platter.

Drizzle with cold-pressed rapeseed oil,

salt and pepper.

Keep the platter out while you prepare the other ingredients - potato salad tastes best when it is at room temperature.

In a bowl, mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard and vinegar then add salt and pepper.

Mix well and pour this over the potatoes. It does not have to cover all the potatoes.

Grate the egg on a coarse grater and apply over the potatoes in an even layer.

Cut the onion and radishes as thin as you can and spread out over the salad.

Cut thin strips of asparagus and place on the salad. I usually use a potato peeler.

Just before serving, garnish with chopped parsley and some grated horseradish.

Why does grain diversity matter?

It matters for health: it makes little sense to measure the value of food only in terms of calories. Poor nutrition and obesity are two sides of the same coin. We need foods with greater nutrient density - that nourish us instead of just making us fat!

It matters for biodiversity: commodity grains developed to

maximise yield are also reliant on a chemical toolkit of artificial fertilisers and pesticides, which have huge costs in biodiversity loss, pollution and the health of our soils, as well as high greenhouse gas emissions.

It matters for climate resilience: to withstand the changing weather patterns that we know are coming, we need much greater diversity, to develop varieties that can withstand unusual conditions. We also need farmers to be able to produce and develop heterogeneous seeds instead of being wholly reliant on patented seed from a small number of giant companies.

LAODS aims to make c MEL Brooks’ riotous and multi Tony Award-winning musical comedy The Producers is being staged by Lincoln Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society this June because it believes the city needs a good laugh.

Set in New York City during the late 1950s, our story follows the fortunes of the stricken Max Bialystock, a failing Broadway producer with yet another flop under his capacious belt. Who can he rely upon to flip his flops into success? Perhaps Leo Bloom? A pointless accountant in desperate need of a little excitement. Max and Leo plan to set in motion the most dastardly of schemes involving goose stepping pigeons and a musical play based on the worst idea in Broadway history.

“Right now it may be an understatement to say that we all are in need of a good laugh,” said LAODS Simon Nicholson.

Mel Brooks, the writer and composer of The Producers is best known for his comedy hits including Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. The Producers started as an Oscar-winning film which features, as in many Brooks’ movies, the ruthless mockery of fascists particularly Nazis. Brooks was born Melvin Kaminsky in Brooklyn to Jewish parents originally from The Ukraine and Poland.

Simon added: “LAODS chose The Producers for it’s wonderful musical score, amazing dance routines, outrageous humour, and the chance to make Lincoln roar with laughter. We hope you can join us at Lincoln Performing Arts Centre from June 28.”

Joy sets two novels in Lincoln AS a child Joy Vee loved reading stories based in places she had been.

However, growing up in Lincoln, she did not see the places she recognised on the pages of a book until she was old enough to discover Margaret Dickinson.

Now Joy has written two books based in Lincoln: “There’s nothing quite like reading about a street you have walked down or finding that the author had extended their fictional retelling to include an outside café in a favourite park.”

Joy was born and went to school in Lincoln. After studying at Hull University she got on a plane for the first time and moved to Kyiv, Ukraine finally coming back to Lincoln in early 2022.

“A couple of years ago, I started writing children’s books for my nephews and nieces, looking at big issues, such as homelessness, forgiveness and being misunderstood. My Christian faith influences my stories, since that is where all my biggest adventures in life have come from.”

Her latest children’s book, The Letters She Never Sent, follows the story of Amy-Hope. Her parents have just split up, and she and her dad move into a new house in Lincoln. Amy-Hope connects with Mrs Peters, their reclusive next-door neighbour, thanks to her dog, Cosmo. The book ‘deals with big issues, such as fear and anxiety, in a really gentle way and there is an overriding feeling of hope throughout.’ (Amazon review.)

GLYNNE JAMES

Glynne rises to challenge of our changing landscapes

GLYNNE James is fascinated by landscapes.

It all started when he moved to Lincolnshire in the 1970s after growing up surrounded by rolling countryside and woodlands.

Much to his own surprise, he fell in love with the open spaces, distant horizons and vast skies that are The Fens.

“I look at the landscape as an evolving scene where every day it changes, whether in minute detail with the growth of plants and trees, or the vast changes in weather as it sweeps across the land.

“Our landscape is so vast that to show it as a single moment of time, does not represent its true character. Therefore, I choose to construct a landscape from within, with how I feel at that moment but using references and memories to portray a view that I feel represents the area in which I am working.

“In the Lincolnshire Fens, I use the Gas and Straw burning power stations and the windfarms or Boston Stump as a basis to give people a reference point but combine this with crop rotation and weather changes to paint the image or idea within me.”

With the impact of climate change Glynne’s work continues to develop and reflect the times. “Where once I painted cooling towers, these are starting to disappear so now, I show wind turbines, and solar farms. Similarly, an increase in the growing of oil based crops such as oilseed rape and linseed oil, which reduces the amount we must import, changes the colour palette of the landscape and how we view it.

“So, my paintings have a temporal approach which results in highly stylised canvases…I like to challenge the viewer to really see the landscape and not just look at it.”

Glynne has recently been accepted as a member of the artists’ co-operative that runs the Harding House Gallery. His work can also be seen at London Contemporary Art, Pimlico, London, Stark Gallery, Canterbury, Bell Fine Art, Winchester, Buckenham Gallery, Southwold, Suffolk, Riverside Art and Glass, Wroxham, and Norfolk.

Recent works have gone to France and America as well as two commissions for a large cruise ship.

Lincoln Creates is inviting artists and businesses to submit ideas for creative projects to take place in the city during the summer. These could be installations, exhibitions, street decorations, performances and/or workshops. Scheme administrator Lincoln BIG is particularly keen to see collaboration between artists and businesses.

Funding comes from the public auction of the Lincoln Imps in October 2021.

Due to Covid-19, Lincoln Creates was put on pause in 2019 and is now being relaunched to bring new life into the city.

The mural underneath Wigford Way Bridge in Lincoln was an earlier project commissioned by Lincoln Creates, which awarded £2,870 to James Mayle from Imageskool and Luke St Clair-Pedroza to brighten up the area (below).

The word mellifluous could have been coined to describe it.

But they also make other calls. Sharp and staccato. These are the blackbirds alarm calls - used when there is danger nearby, perhaps a bird of prey or a cat. It warns other birds of the risk so they too can act and avoid the danger.

Spanish bluebells - floral revenge for the Armada?

I WRITE this usually about a month ahead of publication and as I write there are bluebells out all over my garden.

I was inspired to discuss bluebells by Monty Don’s rather throw away line in a recent Gardener’s World, about digging out all of your Spanish Bluebells and replacing them with the English variety.

Monty Don is the master of dramatic, sweeping statements.

Let us first look at the differences: Spanish bluebells (below right) are a bigger, broader leaved, paler flowered variety, that do, indeed have a tendency to spread much faster than our English ones (below left).

English ones are daintier, the leaves narrower and the flowers a richer colour.

The flowers on Spanish bluebells grow right around the stalk, whereas on the English variety the flowers droop elegantly down one side.

It’s all very well saying dig the Spanish ones up, but they do, in their defence, provide good colour and if that is all you have then why remove them?

The problems begin when you have both sorts. The Spanish can quickly overwhelm the English, which is a shame.

Could this be a floral revenge for the Armada, think you?

Native English bluebells are not, however, cheap to buy. Buying them as bulbs can be a little hit and miss.

I know I have far fewer plants than the amount of bulbs I have bought over the years.

A reliable supplier is essential, because unless you see them side by side it can be difficult to tell them apart.

It can also be fiendishly difficult to dig any of them out, as their

bulbs burrow deep into the soil over time.

I have tried to keep them apart but have found the Spanish creep ever closer and so have, this year begun to remove the ones in the back garden.

The front garden is full of Spanish and they look fine.

I certainly would not consider taking them all out.

Nevertheless, English bluebells are a nostalgically romantic addition to any garden and nothing says ‘spring’ more than that haze of rich blue beneath the newly unfurling leaves of woodland trees.

Climate Action Plan

Eight years and counting to Net Zero IN 2019 the City of Lincoln Council, University of Lincoln and University of Lincoln Students’ Union declared a climate emergency and so the Lincoln Climate Commission (LCC) was founded to develop a plan for positive environmental action.

“To become a net zero carbon City by 2030 changes to the way that we go about our daily lives will be needed to reduce emissions particularly from transport, energy use and the everyday items we all consume. The Lincoln Climate Commission and the City and County Councils are unable to directly influence most emissions within the Lincoln area, therefore the success of this Plan will be down to all of us,” states the Climate Action Plan (CAP).

By building awareness and working with communities, LCC hopes that Lincoln will reach net zero by 2030 by addressing issues associated with energy, heat and power, transport and consumption.

One of the targets is for no household to be living in fuel poverty in the city by 2030, with most electricity coming from renewable or low carbon sources, low energy, smart appliances and battery technology to allow surplus power to be exported back to the grid to help achieve Net Zero emissions.

“Our need to reduce consumption emissions alongside production emissions presents a significant challenge to all cities. On average each person in the UK emits 5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) per year from consumption of everyday items such as food, clothing and household appliances,” explains the CAP. Initiatives already in place to help target consumption issues in the city include Plastic Free Lincoln, Lincolnshire Food Partnership and more allotments being provided by City of Lincoln Council to encourage communities to grow their own fruit and vegetables, but there are plans for further action.

The Climate Action Plan aims to tackle food poverty and improve access to healthy affordable food, improve diet-related ill-health and develop a vibrant and diverse, sustainable food economy to help curb over-consumption and food waste.

Keep your pets cool and safe this summer THE wonderful nursing team at the Veterinary Hospital are always on hand to offer advice.

As we head into summer and rising temperatures, they wanted to help owners be prepared and equipped to keep pets safe, cool, and healthy during the hot weather.

Heat stroke Overheating can be life threatening. It can happen to any pet but short nosed dogs in particular are most at risk.

It is important to act fast if you notice your dog developing symptoms of heatstroke. l Keep them calm and still l Take them indoors or into a shady area l Give them a drink of cold water (not ice, or icy water) l Contact your vet l Make sure they have plenty of air flowing around them l Put them on top of a wet towel l Use cool (not icy) water to slowly wet the top of their head, feet, ears and fur

Check rabbits and guinea pigs for fly strike Fly strike is a painful and sometimes fatal condition in which eggs are laid on animals and the resulting maggots eat their host’s flesh.

It can occur very quickly in hot temperatures.

To reduce the risk of flystrike and to keep your rabbits/guinea pigs protected, be sure to check their back ends for fly eggs and maggots at least once daily. It is important to keep their accommodation clean.

Allergies During the summer months, we see a lot more pets suffering from skin allergies because of a higher pollen count. There are lots of innovative veterinary products including shampoos and foams which can really help to alleviate the itch.

Grass seeds Grass seeds are a common problem during the summer months.

They can get into eyes, ears, paws and work their way under the skin. It is always advisable to check over the coat, feet, and eyes after walking, particularly through long grass.

Society makes its own bit of history with Civic Award THE Society for Lincolnshire History & Archaeology (SLHA) is the latest winner of the city’s top honour.

The return of the Lincoln Civic Award ceremony after a two-year break due to COVID 19 also saw the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band be commended.

Chairman of the Civic Award Trustees, Henry Ruddock said building company director Frank Eccleshare had originally presented the award to the city in celebration of his year as Mayor. It was to be awarded annually to a person or organisation who lived or earned their living in Lincoln.

Mayor of Lincoln Cllr Jackie Kirk presented the award to Ian George, chairman of the Society (left top picture), which joins previous winners Clayton Dewandre, Ruston Gas Turbines, Lincoln Canoe Club, John Inverdale, Billy Jackson, Lincoln City FC and many more.

The Society’s roots can be traced back 178 years

to 1844 and the formation of the Lincolnshire Agricultural and Archaeological Society, which published reports and papers relating to the wider county, as well as Lincoln’s rich heritage.

It continued to develop between the two world wars, forging links with other counties, starting a collection of artefacts and producing publications of local histories and magazines.

1930 was a milestone year. The Society was instrumental in saving the city’s Jews House from demolition and later placing it into a Trust, along with another nationally important site, Bardney Abbey.

Today the SLHA has more than 700 members worldwide and caters for people interested in archaeology, family history, heritage and much more.

Ian said: “We are extremely grateful to receive the Civic Award. It is a huge honour. We rely on the hard work of volunteers and this is a tribute to those who have gone before as well as today’s.”

The Society offers day schools, excursions and has a successful bookshop at its Steep Hill headquarters. Ian added it had been growing its following throughout the Coronavirus Pandemic – a trend which had been helped through new media.”

The “highly commended” Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Concert Band was born in 2009 – when it was integrated with the wellestablished Lincolnshire Concert Band So its roots can be traced back to the 1970s and over the years and incarnations it has grown in popularity through performances at home, beyond the county’s borders and overseas.

The Lincolnshire Concert Band made its first visit to Lincoln’s twin town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in Germany in September 1975, making a return visit in October 1977. Today those links continue and the band is proud to have been twinned with the Diedesfeld Musikverein in Neustadt for more than 40 years.

Today’s Band has a repertoire of more than 600 pieces and its concerts have raised thousands of pounds for charity.

Band Chairman Terry Coffey, who was accompanied by fellow musicians and Lincoln’s Chief Fire Officer Mark Baxter, received the special commendation from the Cllr Kirk (bottom pactire)..

“We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award. It is a badge of honour. The band is totally inclusive, our members are volunteers and we play to a professional standard.”

Survey of Lincoln

Queen’s first city visit to open Pelham Bridge IN the month in which we observe a Bank Holiday in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, ANDREW WALKER of The Survey of Lincoln examines her first official visit to the city as monarch – and so far probably her wettest – on 27 June 1958, when she officially opened Pelham Bridge.

THE Lincoln visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in June 1958 formed the first leg of an extensive 12-day royal tour of the East Coast of England and Scotland.

They travelled to Lincoln by royal train from London. One thousand school children were due to perform Morris dances at Lincoln City’s Sincil Bank ground, but it proved to be too wet so instead some community singing was hastily arranged, with 11,000 children in the stands.

One of the highlights of the visit was the official opening of Pelham Bridge, in which, under an umbrella, the Queen unveiled a special tablet marking the occasion.

The development of the bridge had sparked some national interest – not least because of the innovative use of rubber bearings in the bridge’s construction, designed to cushion

the effect of traffic, lessening noise and easing wear and tear.

The construction of the bridge, which began in the summer of 1955, had been part of a major redevelopment of the eastern part of central Lincoln and was to form a key component of an ambitious road improvement plan that never came fully to fruition.

The bridge over the railway replaced the busy Durham Ox railway level crossing, named after a neighbouring public house.

At busy times, the crossing was closed to road traffic for 35 minutes of every hour.

The pub and 82 other properties were removed as part of the development project.

The Times reported on 13 January 1958 that ‘The scheme, which has involved the demolition of much old property and has rid the city of many slums, is costing in all £600,000, of which £350,000 has gone on the building of the bridge.’

It was described as being noteworthy because of its attractive continuous curved shape, extending over a quarter of a mile.

The bridge was designed by Robert Atkinson and Partners. A proposed straight section of the bridge, originally planned for the stretch immediately over the railway lines was removed from the design at the suggestion of the Arts Council of Great Britain. Although the bridge was officially opened by the Queen in June 1958, one of the carriageways had been accommodating traffic prior to Christmas 1957.

The main contractors for the project had been Tarmac Civil Engineering Ltd, working under the city engineer and surveyor A. Adlington, with consulting engineers W.S. Atkins and Partners.

All the steel work for the structure had been fabricated by the longestablished Butterley Company of

Derbyshire, which had worked on the construction of St Pancras Railway Station.

The bridge was completed ahead of schedule.

As a postscript the royal plaque unveiled by the Queen was damaged six months later by a local apprentice who had thrown the contents of a stolen partly-filled sauce bottle at friends but missed and inadvertently hit the plaque, causing it ‘to flake and peel’.

In court, the defendant declared that ‘I did not think it would do that damage or I would have rubbed it off.’ He was fined £6 and ordered to pay an additional £14 costs.

Biodiversity net gain – an opportunity for landowners AMY COWDELL, AGRICULTURAL PARTNER, SHAKESPEARE MARTINEAU IMPROVING biodiversity is a major issue for developers, planning authorities and commercial investors. And with so many private companies needing to meet the latest carbon and biodiversity improvement credentials, there’s a real opportunity for landowners and farmers to do good for the planet while generating a new revenue stream.

What is biodiversity net gain (BNG)?

The Environment Act requires, among other things, all development schemes in England to deliver a mandatory minimum 10% BNG, which must be maintained for at least 30 years.

While the priority for developers will be to avoid biodiversity impact, minimise it or restore biodiversity onsite, this will not always be possible in order to gain the full 10% required.

As such, developers will almost inevitably look to obtain the 10% net gain by “offsetting” biodiversity improvement on land away from the development site. Secondary legislation is awaited later this year to make the requirement legal.

What does this mean for landowners?

There’s an opportunity for landowners and farmers to enter into contracts with developers to allow BNG on their land – adding a revenue stream to the business, which may be more lucrative than what the new Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMS) will offer farmers under the Agriculture Act 2020.

A word of caution - all businesses will need to

consider their own carbon footprint before offering their land to third-party developers.

Furthermore, as this is still a new concept, values need to be carefully considered. With land needing to be set aside for a minimum of 30 years (with the Secretary of State having powers to increase this as it sees fit), it might have an impact on the capital value of the land.

It’s important that the consideration payable by the developer over the 30year period is lucrative enough to compensate for the long-term nature of the agreement and the management of the ecosystem for that time.

Things are also progressing in this space rapidly. Private investors are now coming into the market looking to invest in biodiversity improvements for their own ESG and offsetting requirements.

Land is finite. It’s essential landowners don’t underestimate the value they are potentially holding for future initiatives and it’s crucial to seek professional and tax advice before entering into such long-term agreements.

Helping pubs diversify A NEW support programme has been launched to help local pubs diversify their income and future-proof their business.

Business Lincolnshire’s Pub Diversification Programme aims to support all types of projects that hostelries in Greater Lincolnshire and Rutland may be considering.

Potential improvements could include creating overnight accommodation, retail services, additional facilities for walkers and cyclists, motorhome hook up points in the car park, electric vehicle charging points and more. The programme is aimed at those looking to generate additional income to help futureproof their pub business.

Cllr Colin Davie, Executive Councillor for Economy at Lincolnshire County Council said: “The programme supports businesses by offering one-on-one advice and support, in the form of in-person and online meetings, along with visits to the pub premises. This will help the pub owner to identify what actions they could take to diversify and future-proof their pub, direct them to further help, support and if available appropriate funding options. Up to 12-hours of support will be available, and we can’t wait to see the innovations our local pubs will come up with.”

Managing energy price hikes - more than hot air in the boardroom?

SUMMER brings warmer and lighter days but this year it is unlikely to help businesses weather the storm of unprecedented price hikes in the cost of energy.

According to a recent Policy Voice Survey by the Institute of Directors, over 53% of its members surveyed indicated that the cost of energy has and continues to exert a negative impact on their organisation.

The energy price hikes have come at a time when there seems to have been a perfect storm with Brexit and the pandemic leading to unprecedented disruption to businesses, with rising costs particularly as a result of labour shortages and supply chain issues and in many cases a lockdown loss of revenue.

Some may have been able to pass on such cost increases, for many this has not been the case having to absorb them with a loss of margin.

Businesses are no doubt feeling a bit weather-beaten with the increases in energy adding to the domino effect of challenges faced.

The average household is likely to face an increase in their annual energy bill of around £700 in light of the 54% increase in prices.

When it comes to businesses, the annual bills for the average small business will increase from £1,150 to £1,725 and for the average medium sized business from £1,860 to £2,864.

Many businesses though, depending on what they do, for example those engaged in manufacturing or processing, are set to see much larger bills.

Getting a cheaper supplier is unlikely given the state of the market and while the current deal may be favourable for those on contract they should prepare for hikes on renewal.

Managing the situation really needs a more strategic approach, starting with an in depth understanding, even audit of your energy consumption.

That information can then be used to determine steps and approaches to reducing consumption and becoming more energy efficient.

This may include greater use of more energy efficient equipment, changes in staff attitudes and approaches and

working practices through to installing new energy generation technology.

Quick and simple short-term measures though may not achieve the results required, not least in terms of achieving security or certainty around the supply and cost of your energy.

You may then look to capitalise on the tax reliefs included in the Spring Statement and prior Budgets to support those looking at investing in green technologies and alternative energy sources.

Those looking to install heat pumps, solar panels or wind turbines can benefit from a removal of the 5% VAT levy on the cost of such installations.

The government is introducing targeted business rates exemptions for eligible plant and machinery used in onsite renewable energy generation and storage and a 100% relief for eligible low-carbon heat networks with their own rates bill.

It was announced in the Spring Statement that these measures will now take effect from April 2022, a year earlier than previously planned.

Businesses investing or incurring expenditure in energy saving or environmentally beneficial technologies can look to benefit from the enhanced capital allowances.

The extension to the temporary increase in the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) to March 31, 2023 allows 100% tax relief to businesses investing up to £1 million in qualifying expenditure.

Help may also be available from your energy company with many offering schemes or grants to help improve business energy efficiency, which can reduce costs - for example subsidies on the upfront costs for more energy-efficient equipment.

The cost of investing in new technologies could also be financed, with some funders and banks like Natwest offering ‘Green Loans’ and ‘Green Asset Finance’.

Finally, food for thought, perhaps the increase in energy prices may see more and more of those who have either opted for hybrid or home working to return to their employer’s place of work as they seek to manage their domestic bills?

Business invited to have its say on devolution BUSINESSES in Greater Lincolnshire are being asked for their views on devolution – the process which would transfer powers and funding from Whitehall to Lincolnshire.

Devolution Lincolnshire is the start of a conversation with businesses which is being led by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

Leaders from the 10 local authorities in the area have asked the LEP to lead this business discussion ahead of submitting a deal to the Government at the end of this year.

Pat Doody, LEP Chair said: “We were pleased to be asked by the councils to lead an independent engagement programme with the business community and we would like to encourage people to get involved.

“A devolution deal could give Lincolnshire more powers, more money and more say over public sector funding and can promote local decision-making across many public services that are important to the people, businesses, and communities of Greater Lincolnshire. This in turn should lead to better outcomes and greater prosperity for our area.”

Last year the Government invited civic leaders to bring forward plans for devolving powers to local areas and to work together to help level up the UK.

The Government’s Levelling Up White Paper provides a framework for devolution and council leaders across Greater Lincolnshire are working together to develop plans to enable Lincolnshire to reach its full potential.
