MAINE-ANJOU Headquarters

Greetings,

This summer is moving by fast! The National Junior Heifer Show was a tremendous event due to the hard work of Lindsey, Rylee and all the team. The show provided an excellent experience for the many junior members and their families who attended. The 600 juniors representing 32 states exhibited over 800 head of cattle the third week in June in Springfield, Mo. This event is one of the major highlights for the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) each year. It supplies educational opportunities for our future leaders and showcases some of the best cattle that Maine-Anjou has to offer. After leaving this event, I feel both motivated and very blessed by the members who have and are investing in our breed; thank you!

Maine-Anjou cattle have had a great run across the country at state fairs, with many making the Top Five and a Supreme spot or two. The cattle trends look to be moving towards more naturally muscular cattle in both the show and commercial industries, so it is our time to shine. Maine-Anjou can deliver what is sought after and make its presence felt in one generation. The commitment of the breeders to building better cattle with each generation is coming to fruition, and the industry is recognizing this and giving our cattle the respect that

they deserve. Speaking of long-lasting commitment, I recently was able to witness Larry James and his family being chosen as the Missouri State Fair beef family of the year. Larry and his family have been continuously exhibiting cattle there for 51 years with some of his great grandkids showing this year as well. We are very proud to see one of our Heritage Road Hall of Fame members recognized within the industry for his dedication.

There are also many other opportunities to be involved in AMAA activities. This fall, our shows at the American Royal, Kansas City, Mo., and the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky., will be great events, and we look forward to seeing you there. Some other activities that it is time to start planning for are the Bright Lights Sale in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the Power in the Pens sale in Denver, Colo. These sales have historically featured some of the very best herdsire prospects and females that our breeders have to offer. The sales are held in conjunction with the Cattlemen’s Congress and the National Western Stock Show in the Yards. This is an excellent opportunity to market your program to a large national audience or to find that next impactful bull or female.

The new EPDs, formulated by AGI, are

available on digital beef. Please recognize that there may be some changes to your animal’s EPDs. The percentile ranking should be very close to before, even if the numerical change is substantial. Take a look, and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at your convenience. I want to wrap up by thanking all the sponsors, volunteers, families, and our staff who played a part in the Maine-Anjou National Junior Show. Great Job!! I wish you and your families the best of luck at the remaining state fairs and fall shows.

Best Regards, Blake MAINE-ANJOU - Power without Sacrifice!

DIRECTOR OF PROMOTION & BREED ADVANCEMENT

This issue of the Voice covers a variety of functions taking place towards the end of Summer and the beginning of Fall. As I write this, we’re halfway through the State Fair season. Open shows have had strong participation and the cattle have been excellent - which speaks volumes for breeders’ commitment to quality and breed focus. It’s undoubtedly one of the best times of the year as we head into Fall female sales and some of the annual sales that have been called on for their consistency of quality Maine-Anjou genetics.

Aside from the sales that are headed in our direction, we’re nearing the initial phase of the upcoming research project. It will make a significant impact on the Maine-Anjou herdbook. We have a created an initiative to collect data on close to 2,000 cows and their calves that are set to be weaned in the coming weeks. Of the data collected, we are sure to see data points that will provide Maine-Anjou breeders with a true understanding of the current cowherd and what its future looks like.

As we progress through the project, we will provide you with regular updates on progress and preliminary findings. The purpose of the project is to create an image of the Modern Maine-Anjou Female. Over the last two decades, there has yet to be much discussion surrounding the efficiency of the current cowherd. In the past, as always, cow/calf efficiency was decided based on the pregnancy rate at the end of the breeding season. And while live calves are the difference in profit or not, managing our inputs is the key to maximizing the value of the cattle that stay in the herd and moving the needle. Cow efficiency traits - such as weaned calf weight relative to mature weight, udder scores, and foot scores – and how they relate to longevity are all key assessments that will be looked at. We hope these values will guide breeding decisions and the overall advancement of Maine-Anjou. Getting a chance to look at performance on the hoof and relate that to genetic lines will also hold the advantage in key cow efficiency factors and aid in adding long-term value to the herdbook.

As we move toward the Fall, hopefully cooler weather, and the heart of selling season; please know that you can call on us, at any time, with questions or concerns you may have. The research initiative is an exciting addition to the fold, and we look forward to collaborating with both Texas Tech University and South Dakota State University on it. Be sure to stay tuned to social media with insights and updates as the Fall progresses. Look to this issue of The Voice for ads on upcoming sales and dates regarding submissions for the Bright Lights Sale and Power in the Pens Sale, too!

Sock It To Me

For the past three years, the National Junior Heifer Show has hosted a service project with the help of the Georgia Junior Maine-Anjou & Chianina Association and advisor Ashli Stalvey. Participants are encouraged to gather items for that year’s charity of choice each year. This year’s service project was a sock drive to benefit the Grand Oak Baptist Mission in Springfield, Mo.

No stranger to the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA), Dax Noteboom, son of Jason and Amanda, is a sixth grader from Sheldon, Iowa, and has been attending the junior national as long

as he can remember. He first attended with his siblings, Sami and Cael, and now attends as an exhibitor. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Dax, you will instantly have a smile, and there is a good chance there will also be a chuckle or two.

When this year’s project was announced, Dax admittedly said he was a little nervous: “With pop tabs, we were able to go out in ditches to find cans; you can’t do that for socks.” But despite his nerves, the next step was formulating his plan for success. You may also recall that Dax turned in over 129 pounds of pop tabs last year to benefit the Ronald McDonald House at the junior

national in Grand Island.

Following a trip to the Archer Coop and a visit with their secretary about the great sock drive of 2024, she asked Dax if he had a box that he could bring, and she would put that in their lobby to help him on his quest to collect the socks. That idea sparked the conversation with his family to ask other local and nearby businesses if they would also be interested in letting Dax put out boxes for collection. Dax went around to these places, most of whom he already had a relationship with, told them about his project and asked permission to set out his boxes. He included a single

sheet of paper on the boxes with the following description: I am collecting socks for the Grand Oak Baptist Mission. These socks help families and children in need. If you would like to donate, socks need to be new and still in their original packaging. I will need these by June 20 before I leave for the MaineAnjou/Chianina Junior Nationals. Thank you for your support, Dax Noteboom. He had around 14 boxes in 8 different towns and a goal of collecting around 1,000 pairs of socks to benefit those in need. In addition to his donation boxes, Dax had a few other options he wanted to try to add more socks to his pile. He applied for gift cards through the Thrivent Association, to which he received a $250 gift card and could purchase socks for about $1 a pair. He watched the local swap shop and buy-sell-trade pages on Facebook to gather tubs to transport his loot. Like any good salesman, he took to the internet and researched businesses that may be interested in helping his cause and made contact with them through letters and e-mails. From coast to coast, Dax was able to touch base with representatives from the following national businesses, all of who donated a pair or two to his cause – Bogs, Bomgaars, Brooks, Darn Tough Socks, DeFeet, Famous Footwear, Finish Line, Justin Boots, Made In American Sock Company, Paul Smith, Pro Image, Stance and last but not least the National Football League, you read that right the NFL!

Reaching out to the NFL was challenging at first. He had sent an e-mail but got no reply. Not willing to give up, he penned a letter explaining what he was doing and how they could help him achieve his goal. The letter provided the answer he was looking for! A reply! Not just any reply but a phone call, donation, and letter that included how moved Roger Goodell was in

Dax included this letter on every box that he put out.
Dax pictured with business staff members when he dropped off his donation boxes.

receiving it. Goodell was so moved that he also shared it with his entire team! After a phone call, to which his mom, Amanda, thought was spam and hung up. Don’t worry. They called back and made sure to mention to her that she had, in fact, hung up on the NFL, but they still would be happy to support Dax! Don’t worry Amanda, most of us would’ve too!

As the socks started coming in, Dax noticed they took up much more room than his pop tabs from the previous year. Putting a slight cramp in his carpet farming plans leading up to the junior national, but it didn’t slow him down. As Dax reached his first goal of 1,000 pairs, he decided it would be okay to up the ante and go for 1,500, surpassing that he thought maybe 2,000 was attainable… and then 2,500. When the final tally was in, with the help of family, local, and national support, Dax was able to boast a staggering 2,853 PAIRS to be donated to the Grand Oak Baptist Mission. “It took up the entire nose of the trailer. It ended up being around eight totes of socks in the nose of the trailer and two bags of feed,” said Dax when asked about how much room it took to haul them to Springfield. It was no surprise that again this year, Dax would reign supreme in the junior national philanthropy project, and

for his efforts, he was awarded a large speaker to take home.

Not only were his efforts awarded at the junior national, but Dax was also able to use this for his local county fair. This project garnered him a purple ribbon at the county level and a trip to the Iowa State Fair, where he was fortunate enough to receive a purple ribbon in the Above and Beyond category. This category was meant to give recognition to those members who exemplified greatness and attentiveness to their project. I think it’s safe to say Dax wins this category in a landslide.

Dax submitted his Sock It To Me project to the county fair and qualified for the state fair. Great job, Dax!

was your favorite part of this project?

As his project ended, being the true gentleman that he is, Dax also made sure to send every person who helped him or donated to his project a thank you… no small feat in itself. As our interview ended, I asked Dax one final question - What

The answer was simple: that he just likes helping people. Good job, Dax! We can all learn something from your servant’s heart, and we look forward to seeing what your future holds!

Dax’s letter from the NFL.

Again this year the Georgia Junior Maine-Anjou & Chianina Association hosted a philanthropy project for junior national participants. This year’s donation item was socks. The winner, for the second year in a row, with the most socks (Maybe ever!) turned in was Iowa native, Dax Noteboom. Dax turned in over 2,800 PAIRS OF SOCKS and traveled high and low to get them. For his efforts, Dax was awarded a speaker and bragging rights. Check out the his feature story in this issue of the Voice, great job Dax!

CODY MCCULLOUGH CLIP, FIT & SHOW LIKE A PRO

This award is in memory of AJMAA member, Cody McCullough, Allerton, Iowa. Cody loved the junior national, spending time with family, friends and Maine-Anjou cattle, but more importantly he loved working with his animals and getting them prepared to the highest level. A true talent, Cody worked hard at home and reaped those rewards at the show. In his young show career, he enjoyed competing in team fitting and showmanship and mentoring younger junior members and took great pride in exhibiting bred-and-owned cattle in national shows across the country. This memorial is given to deserving youth who embody the same characteristics that Cody had. A love for fitting and clipping, but also exhibiting and showing. Congratulations to this year’s award winners: Junior - Bret Pembrook, Oklahoma Senior - Justin Herlan, Oklahoma

Thank you to Chuck, Karen, Madison & Drew McCullough for sponsoring this prestigous award in Cody’s memory.

Herdsmen Continue to Benefit AJMAA Youth

The Herdsmen Gathering continues to be a hightlight each summer during the junior national. Each year, the group sells raffle tickets and hosts a social gathering complete with fun and prizes; and most importantly, they recognize deserving young individuals within our organization with scholarships and add a member to their esteemed Herdsman Group. It is safe to say that this year was no different and we kept up with the theme of “Keepin’ It REEL FUN!

Last year the Man-to-Man at the Grand was a huge hit, so this year we offered up round 2! This year’s sporting event was sumo wrestling. If you were fortuante enough to be there, your stomach hurt from laughing. I think one of the best parts of the the gathering is how everyone is willing to do anything that will raise money for our youth, even if it is Sumo Wrestling! Thankfully none of the contestants were injured, but what a way to entertain a crowd and have a little fun while hosting a fundraiser!

This year marked 12 years that the Herdsmen group has been clawing, scratching and absolutely succeeding in building a scholarship program that many organizations only dream about. This year was no different, as they awarded $41,000 in scholarships. GREAT JOB, HERDSMEN! To everyone that has bought tickets, donated items for the drawing, took a bucket of water to the head and supported, THANK YOU! The Maine-Anjou breed is extremely fortunate to have you!

Log into your Digital Beef Account. Under the profile information are tabs that run right to left across the screen, click on “Account”. You may view your current and past invoices by selecting “Show Invoice History”. The information listed under invoice history are notes when work is held for payment, held for testing and when work was mailed. If you click “Download Work Detail” in red on the right side of the screen, it will provide your current fees charged.

DETAILED STATEMENT:

A Detailed Statement can be created with a date range. This is a good tool to use for tax purposes.

When cows are flushed from your herd, you may log the dates and count of inventory for each Donor.

• From the left side tool bar select “Breeding”

and then click on “Embryo Inventory”.

• Add new Embryo

• Transfer embryos to buyer.

INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION AND PERFORMANCE DATA:

If work is submitted for weaning and yearling, but not completed, AMAA will delete the entry within three business days and it will need to be added once the data can be provided. AMAA will also delete registrations that have incomplete fields such as blank dams, sires, birthdates, names, tattoos or not owners of the dam that is entered within two weeks. The exception would be entries for registration that are pending due to testing. Please be aware that once a registration has been entered and the “Validate” button is selected, it goes to the registrar to be completed, invoiced and closed. AMAA will make an attempt to contact you prior to deleting the entry via email.

NEW MEMBERS:

All new members must choose a program when submitting a new membership. The two programs that are offered are MAPP and Breeders Choice. More information on these two

programs is available by visiting maine-anjou. org and clicking on “Member Services” “MAPP Agreement.” If a membership is submitted without choosing a program, the new member will be placed in the Breeders Choice program.

MEMBERSHIP ACCOUNTS

It is the AMAA policy to only share account information with those authorized on an active account, no matter the age of the account holder. The account holder must provide written permission to add a person(s) to their account to transfer and register on their behalf. Anyone that is not authorized on an account will not be provided passwords or invoice information no matter the age or relation to the account holder. The account holder is the only one that can call or e-mail the AMAA directly to remove or add any person(s) to/from their account. Any authorized person on the account can register, transfer, obtain or change passwords once they are on the account.

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING:

To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are:

o Missing herd prefix and herd ID

o Birthdates

o Date of sale

o Name of animal

o Payment

Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Rylee at rylee@ amaapc.com. When calling or e-mailing please have the name and breeder number of the person submitting the work.

When registering annual active dams for

MAINE-ANJOU

Announcements, News & Events

performance only animals please submit them online if you have the capabilities. This will help the registrar processing tremendously.

We appreciate you and your business and want to make sure that the registration process runs as smooth as possible. Thank you in advance for your extra time in making sure all work is correct, complete and received in a timely manner.

REGISTRATIONS:

The AMAA will assess a $5 fee for any registration work received by fax, e-mail or by mail. To avoid this fee, please log into your online Digital Beef account to complete all registration work. New forms can be downloaded from our main webpage under Digital Beef/Registrations – Printable Forms. If you need assistance logging into your online account please contact us at maine@amaapc.com.

If work is faxed or e-mailed it is the responsibility of the breeder to give us a follow up phone call to make sure that the work is legible and to cover all fees.

BLOCK REGISTRATION

DISCOUNTS:

Want to save on registration costs? Consider pre-paying for a block of registrations. The cost savings are as follows:

• 15 head - 12%

• 25 head - 15%

• 50 head - 20%

• 75 head - 25%

• 100 head - 30%

Blocks may only be used on animals under 13 months of age and may not be used on steers or foundation animals. Blocks will only be valid from January 1 - December 31 of each year. Any unused block registration numbers will expire. Block purchases must be pre-paid for prior to registering. If you are interested in purchasing a block, please contact us at 816-431-9950 Ext. 2.

FOUNDATION ANIMALS:

Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees.

ONLINE TRANSFERS:

When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer.

When creating a new profile for a buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact.

RUSH ORDERS:

If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person.

Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number.

BULL CALF REGISTRATION:

If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number. Once the animal has been tested the registration will be completed at the regular rate based on the animals age at the time the test is completed. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks.

MAINE ANGUS PAPERS:

Digital Beef will automatically convert cow/ heifer registrations to Maine-Angus if they qualify. All Maine-Angus bulls applied for will be reviewed by the registrar prior to converting to MaineAngus. A Maine Angus paper will be blue in color, have Maine Angus under the Maine logo, and will have MaineTainer across the center of the paper. The animal can be shown as a MaineTainer if there is not a Maine Angus division at the show.

DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS:

Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or nonregistered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records.

To submit a sample through the association, please follow the DNA request

instructions on our website, maine-anjou. org, under the Genetics/Testing tab. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted.

Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested.

Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab.

We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable.

DNA REMINDERS

Fall Sale Season is approaching and extended test times are expected. Please be aware that the Geneseek lab turnaround time is approximately 3-4 weeks on defect testing. Turnaround times are longer for multiple tests on one sample. Please be prepared when preparing for fall sales and shows that testing will take longer than normal. We would encourage you to start ordering the testing you need as soon as possible. For assistance with ordering please email Rylee at rylee@amaapc.com.

• NEW All samples turned in on a hair card will be charged an additional $5 per sample starting January 1, 2022.

• NEW The Panel #3 has dropped to $95 and this is the most inclusive test offered through AMAA. With this test you will receive 100 thousand DNA markers which includes parentage as well as genomics. The panel also includes several defect tests including TH and PHA. This is the recommended choice for those wishing to improve their herd.

• AMAA will accept blood cards, tissue sampling units (TSU), semen straws or hair cards.

• All bulls born after January 1, 2014 must be TH and PHA free by test or pedigree in order to register. If a bull is found to be a carrier, he

can register as a foundation or performance bull only, but all progeny will have to test free of that defect in order to register. Foundation bulls will carry their Maine-Anjou percentage to their offspring.

• All A.I. sires regardless of breed and/or commercial, must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering any progeny.

• All donor dams must have DNA, TH and PHA on file prior to registering their ET calves. If a donor is dead before a sample was procured, you must DNA, TH and PHA test all ET calves in order to register them.

Dallas, Texas – As July came to a close, the American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) had one more outing that they were looking forward to, the MAINE Event! Again this summer, youth from all corners of the country, aged 14-21, gathered together in Texas for a MaineAnjou summer highlight. The MAINE conference was created to allow youth to build their leadership, teamwork, and personal development skills in a unique and engaging atmosphere. This year’s

conference featured many highlights and returning attendees, and everyone had fun!

July 23 - Arrival

An early morning was on the schedule for many attendees as they traveled to Dallas for this year’s conference. Like in years past, each attendee was welcomed by the smiling face of one of the AJMAA Board of Directors. As attendees were picked up, they headed back to home base at the hotel to prepare for the day’s

Attendee’s enjoyed visiting with Mike, Seth & Susan Rimpel at our stop in Athens, Texas

first outing – PepsiCo and Frito Lay for a look into how your snacks are made. The afternoon’s tour was hosted by a good friend of Maine-Anjou, Katie Marston. Katie is a Senior Sensory Food Scientist who has been involved in the livestock industry her whole life. Katie resonated with the group because, like most of them, she grew up exhibiting cattle, livestock judging and headed to K-State for her degree. While at Frito Lay, we learned that there are many pieces and parts to perfecting the perfect snack. Frito Lay/PepsiCo employs over 3,500 people worldwide, including people with degrees in engineering, to graphic design, food science and everything in between. Following our tour, we did a taste panel and followed up with questions. Did we mention we saw the world’s largest Cheeto? Because we sure did! These unique learning experiences helped better our understanding of the food industry and the different jobs available with it.

Following the tour at Frito Lay, we loaded back up and headed to the hotel for our keynote speaker, Dr. Laymon Hicks. “Dr. Laymon Hicks’ story is moving, his words are empowering, and his message is practical.” It was a great evening spent with Dr. Hicks, and a few of the takeaways were:

- Like knocks you down, GET BACK UP!

- The world is blessed by YOU!

- Whatever You Want – Go out and get it!

- Great things come to those who get up, get out and go get it!

Following Dr. Hicks was a bite to eat and ice breakers until bedtime. Karaoke was involved, and while entertaining, I wonder if we have our next American Idol in this group. The evening was filled with fun and laughter, and the karaoke session was a great way to unwind and bond with the group. It was a reminder that learning and networking can also be fun and entertaining.

July 24 - Priefert Manufacturing & Rimpel Show Cattle

An early bus ride and donuts were first up on the agenda for DAY 2 of this year’s conference. We loaded up and headed to nearby Mount Pleasant for a tour of Priefert Manufacturing. If you have never researched Priefert, I encourage you to do so. What an interesting history and mission, with most of the family still employed today. “Motivated by the pride of ownership and the challenge of finding a better way, the Priefert family has built a business focused on meeting the needs of the American farmer and rancher. Building ranch equipment is not just a job; it’s their lifestyle and an integral part of who they are. Hard work, good people, a willingness to step “outside the box,” and abundant blessings from God have allowed the

company not only to grow and prosper but also to earn a strong reputation in the industry for integrity, quality, and reliability.” Upon arrival, we suited up with the appropriate safety wear and headed back for an in-depth tour of their manufacturing plant. I could go on and on about the different things we saw, but I encourage you to reach out to one of the attendees and get their take on it. It was certainly cool to see large rolls of steel turn into your everyday cattle panel, chute, and much more. Following our tour, we heard from Sara Radar & Courtney Duncan of their marketing team and a look into their path to Priefert and the day-to-day. Marketing covers such a broad scope, and it was fun to hear about how they were a part of the NFR, Jurassic Park (the MOVIE!), and much more. We rounded out our time in Mount Pleasant with group round tables and learning what attendees thought about the AJMAA, junior national, and MAINE Events and what they would like to see in the future.

It was then time to load up and head out for our last tour of the day, Rimpel Show Cattle, Athens, Texas. While there we learned about their program as well as their construction business. We had the opportunity to see their operation in action, from cattle management to construction projects. We rounded out the evening at Top Golf. Again, maybe no Tiger in our midst, but the kids did enjoy their time!

July 25 - Oklahoma Steel & Wire, Buck Cattle Company, D&H Cattle & BUCCEES!

The last day of the conference is always bittersweet. At this point, everyone is just a little tired but excited for the day. This year was no different as we loaded the bus and headed to Madill, Okla., for a big day of tours. Our first stop was at Oklahoma Steel & Wire and Mid-America Steel. What. A. Tour! Attendees were fortunate to see the inner workings of a steel and wire mill. There are no accurate words to describe how cool it is to watch scraps of metal turn into molten hot lava and later a roll of wire or panel you use in your everyday life. There is no doubt that we felt like Craig and Ethan Moore rolled out the red carpet for us on that tour, and it will not be something

that we soon forget. Additionally, it tied in well with the day before’s touring at Priefert. Following lunch, we headed to Buck Cattle Co., where we learned more about the Buck Cattle Co., operation. Jirl gave us a history of the ranch and allowed attendees to ask questions. This group has always been a group of learners, eager to pick Jirl’s brain about everything. Our next stop, and a highlight on the tour, we headed to D&H Cattle Bucking Bulls. Partners with Jirl, D&H has some of the best bulls on today’s PBR Circuit. We heard from HD Page about all things Bucking Bulls when we arrived. We even got the opportunity to watch them buck a few of the yearlings. It was a super cool experience that will not soon be forgotten. Par for this summer, it got a little warm by the afternoon, so we returned to the Bucks for a pool party and pizza feed. After a busy day of touring, the kids loved their time in the pool! We said our thank yous and goodbyes to Jirl and Brenda and loaded the bus with one more trick up our sleeve: a stop at the everfamous BUCCEES on the way home. You have never seen more laughter and smiles

MAINE attendees after a great day at Priefert!

than a group of kids headed into a Buccees. Who are we kidding? Rylee and I were excited, too.

We want to thank each one of our tour stops for taking the time to educate and visit with our group. Each stop was exciting and engaging, and we appreciated the different perspectives, paths, and information they shared with us. Another year, another successful conference. If you have young people ages 14-21 who have not attended, we encourage them to visit with an AJMAA junior board member or attendee about why they look forward to it each summer. Nothing is better than getting a group of young people together and watching them grow, learn, and succeed. We hope you join us in sunny Florida next year, July 22-25!

got us started on the right foot for this year’s conference.

Thank you to Ethan & Craig Moore for leading our tour at Oklahoma Steel & Wire.
The pool party was a big hit at Jirl & Brenda Buck’s.

This summer was a blast, and I am excited about the coming year! I’m Abby Stallbaumer, a Region Two Director and newly elected president of the AJMAA Board of Directors. Though I am originally from small-town Oconto, Neb., I am embracing the Okie life while studying Agribusiness and Agricultural Communications at Oklahoma State University.  I fell in love with the AJMAA at my very first junior national show in Hutchinson, Kan., where I showed a cute, little black-and-white steer, ran around all week with brand new friends, competed in contests, and set my eye on becoming an AJMAA princess. That next year in Grand Island, I was chosen to don the tiara and sash. I spent the whole term looking up to the board members because of their positivity, kindness, and leadership abilities. I ran and was elected as a Region Two director in 2021 and was re-elected in 2023. I have loved every minute of representing great cattle, excellent breeders, and junior members who continue to inspire me.

Now that the summer has O-fish-ally passed, it is safe to say that our junior national show blew it out of the water! Though you may be tired of fishing puns after a week of Keepin’ it Reel in Springfield, I hope we’ve hooked you on the AJMAA and the family we created. I enjoyed seeing our juniors try their hands at new contests, exhibit incredibly highquality cattle, and spend the week connecting

with old and new friends. My week was full of laughter, making connections, and taking many steps in the show ring.

The junior national wasn’t the only fun we had this summer, as we rounded out July at the MAINE Event in Dallas, Texas. This industry-based leadership conference focuses on allowing our older association members to connect with industry professionals, explore various agricultural sectors, and strengthen their leadership abilities. Tour stops included Frito-Lay, Priefert, Rimpel Show Cattle, Oklahoma Steel & Wire, and more. When I asked participants, some of whom had never been to an AJMAA MAINE conference, what their favorite part of the week was, I got various answers. From the Buck Cattle Co., pool party to the bus ride on the way back from Bucee’s, I think it is safe to say we all had a fantastic week in Texas.

As I look into the year ahead, I am nothing but excited. We have a great group of board members ready to make our events a success. As we head into the fall show season, I look forward to seeing our breeders and juniors at the major shows. Watch for show-stopping announcements regarding the 2025 National Junior Heifer Show in Louisville, Ky. Stay tuned!
