Welcome to AmericanaFest UK 2021!

On behalf of the Board it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 6th annual AmericanaFest UK & the UK Americana Awards. Not our usual event in our Hackney venues for reasons I do not need to explain, but none the less we bring two days of wonderful international showcasing, and the awards which are an indication of the artists, albums and songs that really made an impression during 2020 and the recognition of those who were brave enough to still release music during a time when they knew they could not gig and tour.

After much deliberation the Board decided late last summer to go ahead and plan an online event, not something any of us had experience in doing, but we are delighted to share that colleagues from across the industry were happy to reach out with advice on what had worked for them and what hadn’t the community across the Americana & Folk world is stronger than ever and that gave us the courage to move forward with our plans for the event.

Once again we are thrilled to welcome Guest Showcase hosts; our now established partners CIMA, PEI, Thirty Tigers and YepRoc are joined this year by Come Hear North Carolina, Loose Records and Sounds Australia, we even have a special Happy Hour coming from East Nashville courtesy of The Wild Ponies. We are more excited than ever by this year's line up 90 artists over two nights across two stages on our specially designed festival website.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the artists who applied; there are so many talented members that it was a difficult task for our selection committee this year. We hope to find other opportunities for many of you to be part of over the coming year. Whatever this year brings, we will keep looking out for you because being a member of AMA-UK is also being part of the journey the genre is making, growing stronger every year even during this difficult time for the wider industry.

In keeping with our commitment to a number of important causes, I am proud to say that we have fully realised our Keychange pledge for the fourth year running, with a minimum 50/50 gender balance across all areas of our event.

We also signed the Music Declares Emergency pledge last year and we have held that in our minds during the planning for this event.

Our Gala Awards night will look a little different than usual, but we hope you will rise to the occasion and get your best red carpet outfits on, pour your favourite drink and celebrate along with us. There are lots of ways to be involved with the virtual red carpet and the after party bar - read on to find out more.

So… as usual alongside the member-voted awards, this year we have eight special awards, which you can read about in the following pages, once again celebrating exactly what makes this genre so special with wonderful recipients from every corner of the Americana genre. As well as the Emerging Artist Award, Best Selling Americana Album and our Grassroots Award, the Board selected a UK artist for the Lifetime

AMERICANAFEST UK

Achievement Award and the Trailblazer Award. For 2021 we introduce a special Songwriter Legacy Award to honour John Prine. We also have International Trailblazer and International Life Time Achievement Awards to honour artists from outside the UK who have helped shape the genre to what it is today.

We are proud to also be including a tribute show to the legendary John Prine and to share our most recent community songwriting workshop that this time brought AMA-UK members together with staff from the NHS to write songs about the incredibly difficult and emotional year they have had in 2020.

Once again we thank our membership for their commitment to the nomination and voting process for the seven member voted awards, these are your awards and we are glad you take this process so seriously. We feel proud that the nominees and winners are decided and voted for by the membership. So this just leaves me to share the Board's heartfelt congratulations to the nominees, all of them worthy winners. We hope you have a really special three days.

Registration YOUR GUIDE TO AMERICANAFEST UK 2021 We are so excited to welcome you to the first ever online edition of AmericanaFest UK. We have built a special digital festival website for you to enjoy for the duration of the event AND for two weeks afterwards so you can check back in and watch anything you might have missed!

You can use your login details to come back to the festival to watch performances on demand for up to two weeks after the event has finished.

Access to performances will finish at midnight on the 11th February 2021.

How to join the event LOGGING IN 1. Copy your DICE access code received by SMS or email and follow the link to americanafestuk.com/virtual-wristband 2. Sign up for an AmericanaFest UK account by filling in your details (same email used for your ticket!) and clicking submit 3. You will then be asked to enter your access code - paste it here 4. You're in!

If you need to buy your ticket, please click the buy tickets button and follow instructions to pay and access the site.

If you didn't receive your access code from DICE please get in touch with their customer service team who will be happy to help out. If you're having other issues logging in please email events@theamauk.org We recommend you go through the Sign Up / Log In process on the AmericanaFest UK microsite as soon as possible in order to collect your virtual wristband for the event.

Once you do this you will be able to explore the site and view the schedule in advance, as well as information/links for the artists performing at the festival. This should help you to plan your schedule and avoid missing out on artists you'd like to watch! We request that you collect your virtual wristband no later than Sunday 24th January.

CASTING TO YOUR TELEVISION Using a HDMI cable: 1. Login to the festival site on your phone AND on your laptop 2. Once you are logged in on your laptop connect your HDMI cable to the laptop and the other end into your television & click source > HDMI on your TV 3. Your laptop should now be mirrored to your TV - click the little full screen mode icon in the bottom corner of the video to stretch the performance across your whole TV 4. Exit full screen mode to switch between stages and repeat to view full screen 5. Participate in the live chat using your phone while watching on your TV

AmericanaFest UK: Staying Connected = Staying Respectful The AMA UK wants everyone joining us for AmericanaFest UK to have a wonderful experience using the digital festival site and that includes the live chat. We will have a few moderators keeping an eye on things but please remember the following rules: 1. Disrespectful, offensive or foul language against other attendees or towards artists in the live chat will not be tolerated and you will be removed and blocked from the event.

2. Everyone is in the same boat, watching along from the comfort of their own homes. You don’t need to worry about getting to the front of a crowd or queues for bars. Sit back, relax and treat everyone in the live chat with respect. There is always someone on the other side of your screen.

3. On that note, everyone is trying to chill while watching AmericanaFest UK so please refrain from posting spam or any unauthorised marketing in the chat. We know your product is a game changer but this is not the place to shout about it.

Any spam messages will be removed by moderators.

Following on with our new tradition of community projects as part of AmericanaFest UK, we wanted to recognise and celebrate our beloved NHS. Six of our artist members teamed up with six NHS staff to turn their 2020 experiences into songs. It turned out to be a highly rewarding and emotional experience for all involved - we have made a short film to document how this all happened over a period of 4 weeks in December 2020 and January 2021.

John Prine is the recipient of the Songwriters Legacy Award - this award was designed specially in his honour this year, after we tragically lost him to COVID 19. His songs and music will live on forever and, with this tribute show, UK artists share why his songs mean so much to us and Americana music. It features a very special performance from his sons, Jack and Tommy Prine.

Introducing your host, Bob Harris, OBE ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris, OBE, cemented his place in the annals of music broadcasting as presenter of The Old Grey Whistle Test. In a career spanning more than 45 years, Bob has interviewed and introduced some of the greatest musicians of all time, whilst simultaneously championing up-and-coming artists and providing a springboard for many to go on and forge impressive careers. He has brought pleasure to millions of radio listeners, and he broadcasts the weekly ‘Bob Harris Country’ show on BBC Radio 2. ‘The Woody’ Our unique awards – or ‘Woodys’ as they are affectionately known – are individually hand-crafted representations of 7” and 10” vinyl records. These beautiful one-off pieces are turned by Jaz Auden of 29 Woodwork. Made from a variety of woods, each one is different, reflecting the craft and individuality of the recipients. Due to COVID19 Restrictions the awards all made by craftsman Jaz Auden will be made when safe to do so - we know the winners of these awards will cherish the moment they arrive in the post and understand the delay.

UK Americana Awards 2021 Special Awards In addition to the seven member-voted awards, we have a number of ‘special’ awards, several of which are selected by the Board. In the case of the Bob Harris Emerging Artist Award, the recipient is chosen by ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris himself and The Best Selling UK Americana Album is a sales-based award presented by the Official Charts Company.

In our first year, we had just two special awards, for Trailblazer and Emerging Artist. The Lifetime Achievement Award was added in our second year, and in 2018 we added our Grassroots Award aimed at honouring those working at the ground level of the music industry.

Our Board provides a wealth of experience in order to put the most deserving names forward. The choices can be hard to make, but sometimes – when the right names surface – the results speak for themselves.

Songwriter's Legacy Award John Prine This award was designed this year especially to celebrate the life and work of the legendary songwriter John Prine, who we sadly lost to COVID-19 last year. The board want to recognise the importance of John Prine’s writing in shaping this genre to what it is today.

If you have played on or own the rights to a music recording you are legally owed a share of its royalties.

PPL collects and distributes money for the use of recorded music on behalf of: • the performers on a recording, such as a guitarist or a singer • the recording rightsholder, often a record label or a selfreleasing artist We do this by first licensing recorded music in the UK when it is used in a radio or TV broadcast, an online radio service, or played in public, such as in shops, bars or offices. This is via PPL PRS Ltd, our licensing joint venture with PRS for Music.

The fee paid by our licensees is then distributed to the performers and recording rightsholders we represent. Having invested their time, talent and money to make recorded music, they are entitled to a fair payment when it is broadcast or played in public.

We also collect and distribute money when recorded music is played in public overseas. This ensures our members receive royalties when their music is played outside of the UK. We represent over 115,000 performers and recording rightsholders and, in 2019, collected a total of ÂŁ271.8 million for our members.

By becoming a member, you will receive your fair share of these collections.

Mark Davyd & Beverley Whitrick Selected by the Board members, the Grassroots Award celebrates the sometimes unsung heroes of the UK Americana scene. It is presented to individuals working in the industry (in a capacity other than as artists) who have made outstanding efforts to support Americana music from the grassroots up.
