TRAIN TOGETHER, COMPETE TOGETHER, WIN TOGETHER

Session 1: August 22 – October 15, 2016 The Tennis Memphis Junior Academy is offered as a two hour class per day, 3 days per week, with 90-100 minutes of on court instruction and 20-30 minutes of conditioning. Classes focus on physical, technical, tactical, and mental skills, along with appropriate competitive play. In addition to the foundation of 3 days of classes offered per week are group workshops, Competitive Edge Saturdays, tournament travel, match play ladder and camps to maximize player development and goals. Our Academy follows the USTA Player Development coaching philosophy and concepts that are instrumental in longterm development of outstanding players. Tennis Memphis’s Junior Academy program is for serious players competing in USTA tournaments with the goal of achieving State, Sectional or National rankings and potentially, a tennis college scholarship. Questions contact Arnold Thompson, Director of Programs, 596-0637 or athompson@tennismemphis.org.

COACHING PHILOSOPHY Our training process includes a drilling portion, point and match play, and conditioning. In the drilling portion, you will see a simple progression from hand feeding, to racquet feeding, to live ball drills. Progressions will be customized to meet the specific needs of the players. In this portion, coaches will help players acquire and maintain good technique, patterns of movement, and proper recovery. In the point and match play portion, we will focus on developing patterns of play, ball recognition, and strategy to help players improve their match play experience. Coaches will provide players with shot selection and court-positioning techniques and monitor the behavior of players in different match situations to help them succeed in a competitive environment. Conditioning will work to improve players’ endurance, balance, strength, speed, and agility through a tennis-specific conditioning program. Juniors who apply for the Academy must be actively competing in USTA sanctioned tournaments. Player commitment to excellence, an outstanding work ethic, and respect toward fellow students and coaches is expected. Players will be evaluated by our coaching staff and placed in the groups according to their level. Further changes in groupings may take place as players demonstrate substantial progress. It is essential that players recognize the importance of working as a team to ensure the best learning experience.

ACADEMY GOALS Over the next 3-5 years, Tennis Memphis intends to raise the bar for competitive junior tennis in Memphis and Shelby County, ultimately becoming one of the premier junior programs in the Southern Section. This includes having multiple players in each BG18-10 division who are ranked top 30 in the USTA Southern Section and/or top 200 USTA National Ranking. We want to bring together a diverse group of kids and families from all parts of our community to “train together, compete together and win together”. We want to provide our community and kids with a program which offers the coaching, facilities and resources necessary to play at a high level. We will also strive to instill in them the confidence to believe that they can win against players from the best programs and academies in the country. Tennis Memphis has created a new position- Jr. Academy Director/High Performance Coach- which will lead, develop and enhance program and player development and help the program to achieve these goals.

GROUPS Players are assigned to a group by our coaching staff. Players are placed in groups based on general guidelines consisting of their USTA ranking, commitment and work ethic, goals, ability and potential and age. Each group will consist of 6 to 12 players who have similar goals, commitment levels and comparable playing skills. Our structure for the 2016/2017 school year has 11 levels. While the program will not currently have players in the G-1, G-2, G-3 levels, we believe over the next 3-5 years we will have players in each of those groups. The group guidelines are to establish criteria to best match players within each group. This will maximize player development, help set player goals and provide a progression within a developmental pathway.
