July 2024-June 2025
This year, Alvernia University’s O’Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship took significant strides toward long-term financial sustainability. We expanded our capacity and impact while remaining dedicated to our O’Pake mission and the guiding mission of Alvernia. Through the unwavering commitment of our staff, faculty, students and community partners, we continue to foster growth and innovation within the university and across the regions we serve.
As with each annual report, we choose a theme. This year’s theme, Expanding & Monetizing to Sustain, reflects our intentional focus on creating a self-sustaining future. Central to this effort is our monetization strategy. We have outlined our vision to generate $2 million in annual recurring revenue. To that end, we have already established new revenue streams aligned with our mission and capabilities. With the successful acquisition of significant funding from partner companies, we are not only building financial resilience but also reinforcing the confidence our partners place in the transformational O’Pake model. This support directly fuels the expansion of programs that empower entrepreneurs, strengthen small businesses and create local economic opportunities, while enhancing our distinctive student experiential learning model.
A cornerstone of our progress has been the expansion of strategic partnerships. By deepening collaboration with organizations across the region, we have amplified our impact through innovative financial literacy initiatives, enhanced business technical assistance services, expanded academic support within the university and broadened entrepreneurial mentorship opportunities. To further exemplify our commitment to financial empowerment, we are exploring the creation of a micro-lending program to provide crucial access to capital for historically underserved entrepreneurs.
The road to long-term financial sustainability requires both creativity and collaboration. Through the execution of our strategic plan, we are well on our way to bringing a bright future to life for O’Pake. Our focus remains on delivering outstanding and distinctive student experiential learning.
Thank you for your continued support and belief in our mission.

Alvernia University’s O’Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship is preparing for its next evolution. After years of building a strong foundation, we are focused on financial sustainability, expanding our reach, enhancing our capabilities and deepening our impact. The question now is: With the foundation in place, where do we go from here?
With a clear path toward financial sustainability, our priorities include sharing the O’Pake model with new regions and institutions by documenting our success to inspire and guide others. We are also focused on securing resources that not only sustain but also grow our operations through missionaligned activities. Strengthening transformative partnerships remains a key objective, along with further enhancing student experiential learning and contributing to Alvernia University’s broader strategic goals. Above all, we are committed to creating meaningful impact in the communities we serve while supporting the university’s mission and vision.
A significant milestone on this journey is spreading the O’Pake model beyond Alvernia and Berks County. We are encouraged by the interest shown by both peer and aspirational institutions in having us document and share our approach.
The most sought-after aspects for replication include our student experiential learning and training model, the studentpowered technology transfer office serving both the university and the community, our hands-on venture investment division with strong state-level investment ties, and our in-demand student-powered marketing and communications division.
- Rodney S. Ridley Sr., Ph.D., RTTP
To support the spread of our model, we are creating comprehensive guides that outline both the CollegeTowne and O’Pake frameworks. These resources will serve as practical tools for universities, municipalities and organizations aiming to replicate our approach. At the same time, we are exploring opportunities to secure related intellectual property so we can eventually license the model. Institutions such as the University of Notre Dame and the University of Alabama have already expressed interest, further validating its impact and uniqueness.
We are committed to ensuring the O’Pake model continues to drive meaningful community and regional economic change. By connecting students directly to community and economic development projects, we fuel local growth while preparing the next generation of leaders. Strategic partnerships remain central to this work, strengthening university-municipality collaborations and positioning Alvernia as a catalytic force in regional development.
Looking ahead, we will continue to pursue opportunities that foster O’Pake’s sustainable growth and strengthen the communities we serve. By expanding our model, deepening partnerships and documenting our journey, we are poised to make a lasting impact. O’Pake’s future is bright, and we
The O’Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship fosters the development of entrepreneurial programs and economic growth in both the Reading community and in higher education.
The O’Pake Institute operates as a catalyst for regional community & economic development and a driving force for enhancing student experiential learning
Alvernia University has embraced the moral, ethical, and leadership development of its students since its founding in 1958, guided by its Franciscan heritage. In 2008, the university established the Center for Ethics and Leadership (CEL) to make ethics and leadership a defining aspect of an Alvernia education. CEL enhanced the university’s Franciscan identity, created collaborative opportunities for students and faculty, and partnered with the community to expand educational programming, positioning Alvernia as a leader in ethics and leadership education.
Following a generous gift from Senator Michael O’Pake, CEL was renamed The O’Pake Institute for Ethics, Leadership, and Public Service to honor his dedication to Alvernia and the community. In July 2019, under the leadership of President John R. Loyack, Alvernia embarked on a transformative journey to drive economic growth and revitalize the City of Reading and Berks County. Recognizing the Institute’s potential to be a catalyst for this vision, it was reimagined in October 2019 as the O’Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship.
Today, the O’Pake Institute is at the forefront of regional economic development, empowering students through experiential learning opportunities that directly support local businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits. By fostering innovative partnerships with government and community organizations, the Institute continues to create lasting impact across Reading and Berks County.
GLYNIS A. FITZGERALD, PH.D. President
Through the generosity of the individuals and businesses listed below, the O’Pake Institute is providing students with experiential learning opportunities while fostering economic development in the community by providing resources and services to entrepreneurs and businesses.
Collectively, these philanthropic leaders have contributed over $1.7 million to fully fund the O’Pake Institute’s operations, including work-study funding for the student Fellows, mentoring programs, the cultural coalition and early-stage funding for aspiring entrepreneurs. We sincerely apologize for any errors or omissions.
At the heart of O’Pake’s growth and expansion is the Innovation & Commercialization Subcommittee (ISC). Comprised of experienced professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors, the ISC plays a pivotal role in supporting our efforts to expand the O’Pake Model, mentor students, and forge strategic partnerships that fuel long-term sustainability.
The ISC’s guidance ensures we remain focused on empowering students through hands-on learning experiences. By providing mentorship and valuable industry insights, ISC members bridge the gap between academia and real-world application. This mentorship equips students with practical skills, enhances their entrepreneurial mindset, and prepares them to drive positive change in their communities.
A key aspect of the ISC’s work is evaluating investment opportunities, forming strategic alliances, and advising on ventures that align with O’Pake’s mission. In our efforts to scale the O’Pake Model further, we are also developing a comprehensive guide to provide a replicable framework for other universities and municipalities. With ISC support, this resource will serve as a catalyst for expanding our impact and fostering community-driven growth.
The future of O’Pake is bright, and the ISC’s dedication and leadership will continue to drive innovation, mentorship, and sustainable growth. Together, we are shaping a legacy of student success and regional revitalization.
It’s always a pleasure working with O’Pake students as they gain real world experience supporting startups. I’ve witnessed how their work with clients helps to guide key business decisions, which is proof of the real impact our students make on the community.

Since its inception, the O’Pake Institute has supported close to 700 clients, reaffirming its dedication to fostering entrepreneurship and driving regional economic growth.

The O’Pake Institute partnered with Folino Estate Winery to provide comprehensive strategic planning support. Our team, which included O’Pake staff, graduate assistants, undergraduate fellows, and high school interns, collaborated to deliver a tailored plan designed to help the winery identify opportunities for growth and expansion.
Folino Estate Winery was at a pivotal stage in its growth. The leadership team recognized the need to develop a clear capital funding strategy and a strong strategic direction to achieve ambitious goals. They faced the challenge of expanding their locations and transforming into a true destination resort, all while adding staff, streamlining operations, and maintaining positive cash flow. At the same time, it was essential to ensure that any plan for growth aligned with their mission and vision, while not disrupting day-to-day operations. The winery needed a comprehensive plan that brought these moving parts together into one cohesive strategy.
Insight:
Through this partnership, Folino Estate Winery gained fresh perspectives and technical assistance from a multi-level team of students and professionals. The collaborative process not only produced a strategic plan but also highlighted the value
of community engagement and workforce development, as students worked side by side with industry leaders on realworld business challenges.
The winery was highly impressed with both the plan and the students who contributed to its development. They offered the Graduate Assistant in Finance a CFO internship, with the intention of hiring upon graduation. Folino Estate has since put the strategic plan into action, using it as a roadmap to open a second and third location, with additional plans to expand nationally. This outcome demonstrates the impact of partnerships that connect businesses with student talent; delivering technical assistance while cultivating the next generation of leaders.
In 2025, the O’Pake Institute has been hard at work revamping its Empower & Elevate Professional Mentor Network to ensure meaningful and rewarding experiences for both mentors and mentees. This dynamic program is designed to strengthen connections between students and business professionals, community leaders, and industry experts while addressing the whole student, both personally and professionally, so they receive the support they need to thrive academically, professionally, and personally.
The program offers a comprehensive framework that includes goal setting, regular mentor-mentee meetings, and reflective practices. Mentors commit to meeting with their mentees at least once per month, providing guidance, encouragement, and professional insight. Mentees actively participate by setting goals, planning meetings, and reflecting on their progress. To maximize the impact of every relationship, mentor pairing is done in a thoughtful and intentional manner, ensuring alignment with each student’s career aspirations, passions, and interests. The 2025 program also introduces several key enhancements designed to strengthen the experience for everyone involved:
Mentor Breakfast Kickoff in the fall to launch the program and build connections from the start.
Quarterly check-ins to ensure mentor-mentee pairings are successful and requirements are being met.
Monthly mentor-mentee connections to foster consistent engagement and progress.
Mid-year progress reviews to evaluate goals and provide additional support as needed.
The O’Pake Institute’s unwavering commitment to student and client success is at the heart of this program. Mentorship is not just one element of what we do, it is the key driver in unlocking the potential of the next generation of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. By pairing O’Pake Graduate Assistants and Fellows with experienced mentors, we create opportunities for deeper learning, stronger relationships, and
lasting impact.
Through the Empower & Elevate Professional Mentor Network, we are not just enhancing student experiences; we are building a brighter future for our community, one mentormentee relationship at a time.
As part of the O’Pake Institute’s ongoing commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and experiential learning, we are actively building out the Professional Service Providers Network. This will be a collaborative ecosystem designed to connect entrepreneurs, small businesses, and student consultants with trusted experts across a range of professional fields. This growing network will serve as a critical resource hub, offering access to specialized guidance in areas such as legal services, accounting, intellectual property, marketing, human resources, finance, and technology.
In the coming year, we will focus on formalizing relationships with both regional and national service providers, ensuring that clients and students alike benefit from consistent, highquality expertise. Through structured partnerships, service providers will contribute to client projects, participate in educational workshops, and offer pro bono or reduced-rate services that enhance business success while creating rich learning opportunities for our Fellows.
Our strategy includes developing a vetted directory of providers, hosting networking and training events to deepen collaboration, and integrating these professionals more fully into our student-powered consulting model. By expanding this network, we aim to create a seamless support system that strengthens client outcomes, enriches student experiences, and reinforces the O’Pake Institute’s role as a hub for inclusive, community-focused economic development.
Grow the mentor network through increased participation, engagement, and recognition.
Formalize the service provider network to deliver consistent expert support.
Integrate both networks to strengthen client outcomes and student learning.

The O’Pake Community Development Department continues to advance its mission of fostering inclusive growth, strengthening community connections, and creating meaningful opportunities for individuals and small businesses across the regions we serve. This year, the department achieved significant milestones in its core focus areas of financial empowerment, culturally responsive programming, and strategic partnerships.
Through funding received from M&T Bank and MidPenn Bank, we successfully launched our Bilingual Financial Empowerment Program in February, engaging 30 participants. The program provided practical tools and guidance for managing personal and business
finances, and participants achieved measurable outcomes that strengthened their financial stability and growth potential. This initiative represents a significant step toward providing accessible, actionable financial education to our diverse community.
In addition to programmatic work, we have focused on partnership development, connecting with local organizations such as the Reading Firefighter’s Museum, Reading Recreation Center, and the Women’s Club of Reading (WCR). These engagements allow us to better understand existing programming and community needs while leveraging O’Pake’s resources, expertise, and networks to enhance their efforts. By collaborating with these organizations, we amplify impact, foster innovation, and ensure that community development initiatives are inclusive and sustainable.
Looking ahead, the Community Development Department remains committed to expanding culturally responsive programs, creating additional financial empowerment opportunities, and deepening strategic partnerships. Through these efforts, O’Pake continues to empower residents, strengthen local organizations, and contribute to a thriving and equitable regional community.
Over the past year, the Economic Development Department has focused on advancing strategic initiatives that align with the Alvernia Strategic Plan and the CollegeTowne Strategy, ensuring that economic growth efforts are closely connected to the long-term vision for innovation, education, and community development in all the regions we serve. By evaluating opportunities across multiple sectors, the department has prioritized initiatives that not only foster student experiential learning and sustainable growth but also strengthen the link between higher education, workforce development, and community needs.
A central focus has been on forging strategic municipal partnerships that leverage shared resources and align goals to
maximize impact, especially on our Fellows and Interns. These collaborations have supported Alvernia’s mission by expanding access to opportunities, streamlining program delivery, and positioning the regions we serve including Reading and Pottsville as hubs for both academic and economic innovation.
Looking ahead, the department will continue to deepen its role within the CollegeTowne Strategy, building stronger connections between the university, municipal leaders, community stakeholders and our students. Through this work, we remain committed to driving economic vitality, expanding opportunities, and advancing the entire community to be thriving regional centers for growth and innovation.

The Academic Services division of the O’Pake Institute for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship connects Alvernia University’s academic community with the Institute’s commitment to regional economic and community development. Grounded in the values of a liberal arts education and Alvernia’s Franciscan heritage, Academic Services facilitates student-faculty/staff partnerships that enhance scholarship, promote transformative experiential learning, and support community needs through collaborative non-traditional support.
During the 2024-2025 academic year, the O’Pake Institute facilitated academic service projects ranging from helping faculty develop professional websites to a large interdisciplinary project addressing food insecurity in the city of Reading. Three students presented their facultymentored research projects at the Berks Biomedical Innovation Collaborative’s Inaugural Bioscience in Berks Conference. Ten fellows, working alongside six faculty members, created Homegrown Health – an educational program designed to empower Reading residents to sustainably grow healthy food at home. During the design phase, fellows and faculty collaborated with community partners to identify gaps in current efforts to increase access to healthy food in Reading and began preliminary designs for a low-cost modular tower engineered to sustainably grow crops on a small scale in city residences.

In an era where agility, innovation, and workforce readiness are non-negotiable, the partnership between O’Pake and Graduate and Adult Education (GAE) at Alvernia University emerges as a strategic force, reshaping how professionals learn, grow, and lead. United under the Accelerate with AU brand identity, this collaboration delivers more than education—it catalyzes transformation for individuals, organizations, and communities alike.
At the heart of this collaboration is Accelerate AU, Alvernia University’s innovative platform offering non-credit certificate programs tailored for working professionals and non-traditional students. These programs are built with real-world impact in mind—designed to close critical skill gaps, align with workforce demands, and provide immediate pathways to employment or career advancement.
By partnering with O’Pake, a leading driver of accessible workforce development and entrepreneurial empowerment, Alvernia expands its reach and impact. O’Pake brings its deep community roots and practical experience in preparing learners for workforce entry or reinvention, while GAE delivers robust academic frameworks and industry-informed instruction. Together, they create a pipeline of opportunity for individuals who are eager to skill up and stand out.
Whether it’s a young adult exploring new career options, a mid-career professional pivoting to a high-demand industry, or a business seeking to future-proof its workforce, Accelerate AU programs meet learners where they are. O’Pake serves as a bridge— connecting students to high-value learning experiences that are both accessible and impactful.
These non-credit, career-focused certificates deliver the grit-to-growth model that defines Accelerate AU: students bring the determination, and the programs provide the tools, flexibility, and momentum they need to thrive. Nothing beats hands on integration and learning within the O’Pake entrepreneurial incubator model.
One of the defining pillars of the O’Pake-GAE partnership is a shared commitment to entrepreneurialism as a tool for both personal and regional economic development. Graduate students working with O’Pake are immersed in real-world innovation through collaborations that support tech transfer, new ventures, and community revitalization.
These experiences not only develop high-level competencies in innovation, leadership, and project execution, they generate tangible economic outcomes, fostering businesses, startups, and initiatives that ripple across the region.
Through Alvernia’s Employer Partnership Programs, local and regional businesses are empowered to invest in their teams through preferred pricing on Accelerate AU offerings. This initiative supports talent retention, internal upskilling, and innovation within companies, ensuring they remain competitive in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy.
The collaboration with O’Pake & GAE enhances this impact by providing customized programming and community-based outreach that aligns with the unique needs of both employers and the individuals they employ.
The O’Pake–GAE partnership is about more than education. It is about impact.
• For students, it is a lifeline for new careers and brighter futures.
• For employers, it is a solution to address employment needs and to serve as a catalyst for innovation.
• For communities, it is an engine of economic mobility and empowerment.
Together, O’Pake and GAE are not just responding to the demands of today’s workforce—they’re building the workforce of tomorrow, one certificate, one partnership, one dream at a time.
Accelerate with AU. Accelerate with purpose.
The partnership between the O’Pake Institute and the department of Graduate and Adult Education Initiatives, and our focus on strategic partnerships and building nontraditional revenue has been instrumental in driving leadership development and organizational growth for businesses across the region. Over the course of the year, this collaboration facilitated a series of impactful programs, underscoring the power of this alliance.
Together, we hosted multiple fall and spring Leadership Academies for more than 30 leaders from the Surgical Institute of Reading, with 10 participants subsequently enrolling in graduate degree programs at Alvernia University. These academies covered key areas such as organizational development, conflict resolution, team building and feedback mechanisms, alongside the use of DISC leadership personality style profiles to enhance personal leadership understanding. Additionally, the Giorgio Leadership Academy empowered over 250 mid-to senior-level managers, reinforcing leadership skills through targeted sessions.
Over 20 sessions were conducted using the Oz Principle to further enhance leadership, listening skills and feedback, while also advancing DEI initiatives. These programs emphasized communication, cultural awareness and fostering a cohesive organizational culture.
The alliance between O’Pake and strategic partnerships/ nontraditional revenue has significantly strengthened leadership across industries, serving as a model for collaborative success. These efforts not only contributed to organizational transformation but also generated $200,000 in nontraditional revenue for Alvernia, exemplifying the value of consultative services and innovative partnerships.
The Institutional Advancement (IA) team plays a pivotal role in securing resources by fostering a culture of philanthropy, engagement and collaboration. By building strategic partnerships and cultivating meaningful relationships, the
team helps advance Alvernia University’s Franciscan values and ensures a transformational educational experience for students and the broader community.
This past year, the IA team partnered closely with the O’Pake Institute for Community and Economic Development to enhance philanthropy efforts and support O’Pake initiatives. Together, they have successfully engaged graduate assistants in learning about university philanthropy and volunteerism through hands-on experience with annual funds, grants, class gifts, alumni relations, student engagement, special events and stewardship activities.
In addition to these efforts, the partnership has led to the development of new relationships and the strengthening of community ties across the region. This collaboration also supported the advancement of the Alvernia Women’s Council’s mission and the establishment of the O’Pake Alumni Affinity Group, creating lasting networks that support both student success and community engagement.
As Alvernia University’s Institutes of Excellence rooted in the Franciscan tradition, the Holleran Center for Community and Global Engagement and the O’Pake Institute enhance students’ college experience as well as the Greater Reading and Berks County communities. Together, the institutes of excellence nurture a new generation of leaders by fostering a lifelong commitment to service and social responsibility while supporting economic development in the region.
The Holleran Center plays a vital role in community engagement, allowing students to obtain service hours through community and on-campus volunteer opportunities. This year, the Holleran Center partnered with the O’Pake Institute to provide students in the Fellows Program with the opportunity to obtain hands-on learning experiences that emphasize both service and professional development. Through this partnership, two O’Pake Fellows were assigned to the Holleran Center, where they supported key initiatives around creative marketing and communications for the center.
The O’Pake Institute, a catalyst for regional economic and community development, has worked closely with the Holleran Center to align our community development and outreach activities. By ensuring collaboration across
departments, both centers have successfully avoided duplication of efforts and have broadened the scope of impact, particularly in serving the needs of students, local organizations and businesses. This partnership will continue to allow for streamlined community programming and a united approach to improving the quality of life in the surrounding community.
In addition to the experiential learning opportunities, the centers connect to provide and community service opportunities, offering Alvernia students chances to work with O’Pake clients on service projects. This integration of service and professional growth reinforces the university’s commitment to developing engaged citizens who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to society on graduation.
By blending economic development, community engagement and student service, the partnership between the Holleran Center and the O’Pake Institute exemplifies the power of collaboration in achieving shared goals of enhancing both campus and community vitality.
The partnership between the O’Pake Institute and the Office of Marketing and Communication (OMC) plays a vital role in shaping the O’Pake Institute’s voice and image, ensuring alignment with Alvernia University’s brand identity. This collaboration empowers the O’Pake Institute to communicate its mission and impact effectively, both internally and to the broader community. By adhering to the university’s brand standards, the OMC provides the O’Pake Institute with the tools and guidance necessary to craft a consistent and authentic narrative.
Through this partnership, the O’Pake Institute has developed its own distinct voice, which enhances its ability to promote strategic marketing services and highlight student-powered consulting initiatives. This unified approach amplifies the Institute’s presence across the region, positioning O’Pake as a trusted resource for entrepreneurs, small businesses and community organizations. The collaboration serves as a model for leveraging brand identity to strengthen community
engagement and economic development efforts while reinforcing Alvernia University’s mission and values.

This collaboration strengthens Pottsville’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, offering essential business services and resources to drive economic growth in Schuylkill County.
Through this partnership, businesses in Schuylkill County now have access to a wide range of services, including funding preparation, business model development, financial services, intellectual property management, market research and more. Bilingual
Empowerment Series represents a strategic initiative addressing critical gaps in accessible financial literacy resources for Berks County residents, businesses, and entrepreneurs. Conceptualized through the Cultural Coalition's community needs assessment, this comprehensive program secured funding through the Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit Program (NAP) and financial support from M&T Bank and Mid Penn Bank.
The curriculum encompasses 15 sessions delivered by through in-person, virtual, and self-paced formats from February through September, offering dual tracks in entrepreneurial finance and personal finance. Content ranges from foundational topics such as credit management to specialized business applications, including lending strategies and fraud prevention. O'Pake Fellows Program students contributed directly to curriculum development and presentation, gaining practical experience while building institutional capacity for sustained program delivery.
The bilingual delivery model directly addresses linguistic barriers to financial education access, expanding reach within Berks County's diverse entrepreneurial community. This initiative exemplifies strategic community engagement, translating identified needs into actionable programming that supports the region's economic development goals and establishes a replicable model for addressing systemic barriers to entrepreneurial success.
The EmpowerED High School Internship Program achieved significant growth during the 2024–2025 academic year, demonstrating strong regional demand for experiential learning opportunities in entrepreneurship and innovation. Program enrollment expanded fivefold, from 10 to 50 students, while school district participation doubled from seven to 14 districts across the region. This substantial scale increase reflects the program’s value proposition and effective partnership development with regional educational institutions. Program participants demonstrated exceptional achievement, exemplified by an intern advancing to the finals of the TecBRIDGE High School Business Pitch Competition. This recognition validates the quality of mentorship and skill development embedded within the EmpowerED curriculum and showcases students capability to compete at elevated levels.
Strategic collaboration with the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program expanded access to underserved populations, with five Summer Youth Program participants integrating into the EmpowerED Internship cohort. Additionally, the program hosted all 50 Summer Youth Program participants at College Towne for an immersive day of engagement, broadening exposure to entrepreneurial pathways and higher education opportunities. This partnership model demonstrates scalable approaches to youth workforce development and positions EmpowerED as a cornerstone initiative for cultivating the region’s next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
