2016 Alumy Creek Angus Bull Sale Welcome to our Annual on property Angus Bull Sale.

We feel this year’s draft of 41 two year old bulls contains some terrific outcross genetic bulls with both heavily muscled carcase bulls and an excellent selection of calving ease bulls.

The bulls are consistent right across the draft displaying plenty of natural muscle, thickness and easy finishing ability. The Sires of the bulls this year continue to be some of the best global genetics available. They offer significant genetic outcrosses for those breeders (like us) who are concerned at the narrowing of the Australian Angus genetic pool in recent years. They are all balanced EBV trait leaders within the Angus breed and will suit any Angus market.

Our aim is to produce short gestation length, easy calving Angus bulls that are long, heavy muscled and easy doing to sire calves that weigh on the scales because that is what our customers are paid on. We select to breed Angus cattle that can produce a profit under commercial conditions. We also expect our bulls to have a good temperament and be easy to work with and our clients always comment on this. Because we retain the sisters to the bulls we sell, the mature cow size of our cattle must be sustainable in our harsh grazing environment. We also apply stiff selection pressure for fertility and our heifers must calve as 2 year olds unassisted and must continue to go back in calf quickly to produce a calf each and every year. The cows that go in calf early and quickly have the oldest heaviest calf when it comes to weaning and kilos are what the industry still pays for.

We breed for balanced performance, knowing cattle with good EBV figures can also have great structure and temperament. We don’t select for single trait selection or just to add up the highest EBV numbers.

We use EBVs as a tool and not as our only selection mechanism for genetics. Our selection for growth and carcase produces cattle that can achieve extra performance kilos on grass in the paddock and with the potential to access flexible feedlot markets as the season may dictate.

Alumy Creek Angus—26th Annual Angus Bull Sale—catalogue

This year we have embraced the new technology and the sale bulls were all tested with the Zoetis HDi50K DNA genetic worth MVP predictions. The bulls have all been parentage verified. The bulls have outstanding MVPs which Zoetis reported as an ‘elite cohort of bulls with impressive results’. Many of the bulls delivered top 1-7% results for the multiple traits we have selected on for years- Calving Ease, Adjusted Daily Gain, Growth for 200D and 400D Wt, EMA, Carcase Wt and Retail Yield. These breed rankings are against all the genetic testing done on Angus cattle in Australia & NZ rather than against a single year drop cohort. Great to confirm that our bulls carry the genes to profitable performance even though our environment may not allow them to express their full potential. Our bulls are paddock raised, supplemented with Finlay Texas hay since weaning and presented in strong forward paddock condition, ready to go out and work well for you.

The 2016 sale draft includes bulls by the $235K growth and muscle sire Connealy Earnan, the feedlot performer EXAR Upshot, the all-rounder bull KC Haas GPS and the calving ease, carcase specialist Basin Excitement. Homebred sire Alumy Creek In Focus E04 and Alumy Creek Pioneer H17 were both used as AI backup walking sires.

We continue to be super impressed with the real world performance of the Connealy Earnan progeny. This year we are excited to offer 13 standout sons of Earnan. His progeny are commercially orientated thick and deep, easy finishing, long bodied cattle. They also have a good soft skin and a slick hair type (which links to easy keeping cattle) and quiet, tractable temperament.

They have great muscle expression with strong top lines and will add performance and shape to your calves as well as weighing the scales down when you sell. If you get paid on $ per kilo for your product check out his sons. We have also found the Earnan’s to be very easily born, moderate birth weight calves that just power away.

The 2yo Earnan daughters also have impressed with small easily born growth calves, nice shaped tight udders and rejoined back well. Connealy Earnan is currently a breed trait leader for all growth traits200D, 400D and 600D Wt, as well as Carcase Wt and Eye Muscle Area. Earnan is the sire of several standout commercial and stud sire potential sons including: Lots 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 12, 14, 17, 21, 24, 25, 27 and 36.

EXAR Upshot is a great all-rounder with calving ease, low birth weights, outstanding growth, muscle and yield. His progeny are a very consistent type, wellstructured and stylish with extra performance on grass or grain. His progeny also have an added softness and ease of finish coupled with a quiet temperament. His 2yo heifers did an excellent job with easily born good calves, great udders and joined back in calf early.

Upshot is currently a breed trait leader for milk, EMA and Retail Yield. EXAR Upshot is the sire of 13 bulls in this year’s sale with several outstanding commercial or stud sire potential sons on offer: Lots 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 22, 32 and 37.

Basin Excitement has been a very reliable sleep easy calving ease sire. His calves come early, are born easily and really grow fast. They are moderate sized, very structurally sound commercially focused cattle with great skin and hair type that finish easy and weigh heavy. He is already a trait leader for short Gestation Length, 200D and 400D growth weight and will be for Retail Yield as well. Basin Excitement sons offer excellent outcross genetics and will add extra value to your heifers calves with weight in your weaners and yearlings. His 2yo daughters are very structurally sound performers, weaned good calves and rejoined very well. His sons have great muscle shape and carcase performance, suitable for both heifers and cows. They are real peas in a pod, attractive calving ease sires and we just love them. Basin Excitement is the sire of 9 bulls in this year’s sale: Lots 2, 27, 28, 31, 34, 39 and 41.

KC Haas GPS is the calving ease, all round carcase sire who produced last year’s sale topper at Texas Angus. He is an outcross sire who is a trait leader for 8 traits including Calving Ease, Growth, Carcase Wt and Marbling. He is the sire of Lots 15 and 33, both out of 2yo heifers.

Alumy Creek In Focus E04 our homebred sire combines the calving ease and growth of breed icon Mytty In Focus with added carcase performance. He has produced some very attractive well-muscled sons, all with an exceptional quiet temperament. The very last of his sons sell as Lots 19 and 26. Alumy Creek Pioneer H17 is a homebred calving ease son of the popular SAV Pioneer producing attractive, well-muscled and moderate framed calving ease sons. He is the sire of: Lots 38 and 39.

Alumy Creek sired cattle have again performed well in the paddock, saleyards, weaner sales and Auctions Plus with top prices in 2016. We continue to receive great feedback on the paddock performance of our cattle across a variety of environments.

Sale details SALE DATE AND PRIOR INSPECTION TIME: The sale will commence at 1pm on Saturday, 4th June 2016. All weather undercover shelter is provided. The cattle can be inspected by appointment made with the agents or vendors, at ‘Coldawinda’ on Saturday the 21st May 2016 and also from 10am on the morning of the sale.

Lunch and refreshments will be available on sale day.

SELLING SYSTEM: Sale of animals will be conducted under normal auction terms and conditions. Please check with the Selling Agents to obtain a buyer’s number if you are considering making a purchase. Please supply your PIC to the Agents. Successful purchasers are requested to give written advice to the Selling Agents, regarding transport arrangements, at the conclusion of the sale. All animals are sold exclusive of GST. INSURANCE: Is available from the agents on the day.

We do recommend you take insurance out on your purchases.

DIRECTIONS: ‘Coldawinda’ is located 4kms south east of Tenterfield at 420 Scrub Road. When in Tenterfield, turn East off the New England Hwy at Clifton Street, on the Southern End of town (at the 50km speed limit sign). Travel one block then turn right at the T intersection onto Scrub Road and travel 4kms on bitumen to ‘Coldawinda’ on your Right.

HERD HEALTH: All sale bulls have been tested negative PI (Persistently Infected) and have been vaccinated annually against Pestivirus with Pestigard vaccine.

All sale bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1 (for Clostridial and Lepto), Vibrio and 3 Day Sickness vaccine. We recommend annual boosters. Johnes Disease: Alumy Creek Angus has tested negative and been part of the National Johnes Disease Market Assurance Program (JDMAP) for more than 20 years at MN3 level. We have elected to opt out of the JDMAP program pending the current review to the National Program. Our current herd status is MN1 Beef Only in the Beef Protected Area. Our bulls are eligible to enter all states without further testing except WA. (Crossing Papers required for Qld.) Cattle Tick: Alumy Creek Angus is located in a cattle tick free area. Bulls can be held and blooded if required by arrangement.

MANAGEMENT: Alumy Creek sale bulls are all quiet, well mannered cattle and are used to being handled on foot, with ATV Bikes and vehicles. They are used to being worked by dogs. All Alumy Creek sale bulls carry a freeze brand for easy identification in the paddock.

They are rigorously screened for temperament.

However this is no guarantee they will not misbehave under the pressure of sale day.

FERTILITY: All bulls have passed a physical examination and microscopic crush side semen test.

GUARANTEE: All bulls are sold with a 6 month guarantee as a calf getter valid for a period of 6 months from the date of sale. The vendor must receive a written notification together with a certificate from a registered veterinarian stating the nature of the infertility before the expiration of that period. Animals injured or lost as a result of accident, negligence or any disease, are not covered by this guarantee. Vendor liability relating to fertility claims will not exceed the purchase price of the animal and are limited to a credit equal to the purchase price less the salvage value which may be utilized to purchase a suitable replacement from a future Alumy Creek sale. Talk to us if you think you have a problem.

PARENTAGE VERIFICATION and DNA HDi50K TESTING: All bulls have been parentage verified and genomic HDi50K tested. The MVP gene test results were excellent and have been incorporated into Breedplan.

Many bulls were in the elite top of the breed result category. The DNA defect test status of all sale bulls for Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Fawn Calf Syndrome (CA) and Developmental Duplications (DD) is shown for each Lot. AM, NH, CA or DD (AMC, NHC, CAC or DDC) Carrier bulls are normal bulls and show no signs of the defect.

An affected calf has a 25% chance of being produced only if both the bull and the cow are carriers for the same defect. We do not promote carrier bull use in Angus/ derived herds if the genetic status of cows is not known, but they are suitable for cross breeding with other breeds without risk of affected calves. Talk to Lisa if you need more information.

HEALTH AND SAFETY OF VISITORS: Visitors enter the pens of their own risk. Dogs are strictly not permitted at the venue. Children under 16 are requested not to enter the sale pens. All the bulls are known to be of good temperament under normal conditions. However sale day is not ‘normal conditions’. If you enter the pens, take note of your surrounds and be conscious of your safety.

Do not crowd the bulls, or loiter in the pens. Please use common sense and be alert at all times. If you feel threatened whatsoever, please do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of yourself and others in the pen.

Do not be alarmed, but it is critical that visitors pay attention to the risks associated with cattle and the day.

CALVING EASE TRAITS Calving Ease (DIR): estimate of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their calves from 2 year old heifers to be born unassisted. Higher, more +ive, Calving Ease (DIR) EBVs are more favourable.

Calving Ease (DTRS): estimates of genetic differences among animals in the ability of their 2 year old daughters to calve without assistance. Higher, more +ive, Calving Ease (DTRS) EBVs are more favourable.

Gestation Length: estimate of genetic differences among animals in the number of days from the date of conception until the calf birth date. Lower, or more -ive, Gestation Length EBVs are generally more favourable.

Birth Wt: estimate of genetic differences between animals in kg of calf birth weight. Calf birth weight is the biggest contributing factor causing calving difficulty in heifers. While low Birth Wt EBVs are favoured for calving ease they are also often associated with lower growth potential. Small, or moderate, Birth Wt EBVs are more favourable.

FERTILITY TRAITS Days to Calving (DC): estimate of genetic differences among in female fertility, expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are predictions of an animal’s genetic merit, based on available performance data on the individual and its relatives.

EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as +ive or -ive differences from the breed base. As the breed base is set to a historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic change within the breed. The current breed averages are shown below. These averages provide a useful benchmark for comparing EBVs for animals.

UNDERSTANDING ACCURACIES The accuracy associated with an EBV gives an indication of its reliability, and the likely extent of its possible change as more information becomes available. As more data becomes available on animals (or its progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of its EBVs for particular traits will increase.

Accuracies are influenced by the heritability of traits and the genetic associations existing between them. For lowly heritable traits, more information is required to achieve a similar accuracy to that of highly heritable traits.

Accuracies are expressed as percentages. The higher the percentage, the greater the chance that the EBV is a close estimate of the animal’s true genetic merit, and the less likelihood that the EBV will change as more information becomes available.

TRAITS OBSERVED Indicates the traits that have been recorded for a particular animal and are contributing to the EBVs that have been calculated. These will appear directly below the table displaying the animals EBVs.

CARCASE TRAITS Carcase Wt: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in hot standard carcase weight at 750 days of age. Larger, more +ive, Carcase Weight EBVs are more favourable.

EMA: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in eye muscle area (cm2) at the 12/13th rib site on a 400kg carcase. Larger, more +ive, EMA EBVs are generally more favourable.

Rib Fat: estimate of the genetic differences among animals in fat depth (mm) at the 12/13th rib site, measures on a 400kg carcase. More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals.

Rump Fat: estimate of genetic differences among animals in fat depth at the P8 rump site on a standard 400kg carcase.

More positive (+ive), or more negative (-ive), Rib Fat EBVs may be more favourable, depending on your breeding goals.

IMF%: estimate of genetic differences among animals in percentage intra-muscular fat (marbling) in a 400kg carcase.

EFFICIENCY TRAITS Net Feed Intake (NFI): estimate of the genetic differences between animals in efficiency. NFI is measured either post weaning (NFI-P), in young bulls and heifers, fed at around 300 days of age, or in steers fed at around 560 days of age (NFI- F). Lower, more negative (–ive) NFI EBVs are more favourable.

TEMPERAMENT TRAITS Docility: estimate of genetic differences between animals in temperament. Docility EBVs are expressed as differences in the percentage of progeny that will be scored with acceptable temperament (ie. either "docile" or "restless"). Higher Docility EBVs are more favourable. $INDEX VALUES Angus Breeding: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow, joined in a typical commercial self-replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular production system or market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems. The index is particularly suited to commercial producers who sell progeny into different markets, or to seedstock producers supplying bulls to commercial clients who produce for a range of different production systems and market end points.

Domestic: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting the domestic supermarket trade, with progeny finished using either grass, grass supplemented by grain or grain finishing systems.

Heavy Grain: estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a commercial selfreplacing herd targeting pasture grown steers with a 200 day feedlot finishing period for the grain fed high quality, highly marbled markets.

Where the vendor reserves the right to bid at the auction in respect of a lot and instructs the auctioneer to make more than one bid on his behalf, the auctioneer shall, prior to submitting the lot for sale by auction, announce in a clear and precise manner the number of bids reserved by the vendor in respect to that lot.

A bidder shall be deemed to be a principal unless, prior to the bidding, he has given to the auctioneer copy of written authority to bid for or on behalf of a person.

The last price called by the auctioneer shall be the amount at which the lot has been sold.

A bid cannot be made or accepted after the fall of the hammer.

All lots will be at the purchaser’s risk immediately after the fall of the hammer and no responsibility will be incurred by the auctioneer or vendor for their safekeeping. No exceptions shall be taken to any of the lots on delivery the whole having been open for inspection by the purchaser prior to the sale and on no account will any allowance be made.

Every person on the auction premises before, during and after the sale shall be deemed to be there at his own risk and with notice of the conditions of the premises. Such person shall have no claim against the auctioneer or vendor in respect of any injury sustained or any accident, which may occur from any cause whatsoever.

All cattle will be sold GST exclusive. GST will be added to the purchase price.

A 2% Outside Agents Rebate is available to Licensed Agents introducing purchasers in writing 24 hours prior to sale and settling on their behalf within 7 days of invoice.
